We are so proud of Director Edwards and his team of arts and music instructors and staff who have built and continue to expand a robust fine arts program. Accepting this recognition on behalf of the music department is Mary Jim Ed. Smith, music teacher and music demonstration teacher. Justina Drake, HW Smith,

Kevin Borsy, Sammy award-winning educator and Seymour Bureau language music teacher and Holly McCoy McCoy Sammy award-winning educator, Hennega music director and [clears throat] NCSD marching band director. >> All right, >> thank you guys. Don't be red. >> You want these now? >> Okay. We have two proclamations. The first is National School Nurse Day. Whereas school nurses play a vital role in identifying health risks and connecting students to community resources, often serving as the only health care professional that students see consistently. And whereas school nurses are essential in advancing public health, and contributing to students academic achievement and success. And whereas school nurses help boost student attendance by promoting health, preventing illness, and managing chronic conditions.

And whereas students today are dealing with increasingly complex and potentially life-threatening health issues that require attention and care during the school day. And whereas families should be assured that their children will receive proper care and support while they are at school. And whereas every student has the right to have their physical and mental health needs safely supported within the school environment. Now therefore, the board of education and Pamela J. Odum, superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, do hereby celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of school nurses and health aids everywhere while they meet the needs of today's students by improving the the delivery of healthc care in our schools. We offer gratitude for the nation's school nurses by proclaiming May 6, 2026 as National School Nurse Day and commend its observance to all district employees.

>> Congratulations. >> You're my favorite. Thank you. >> Yes. National Teacher Appreciation Week. Whereas teachers are dedicated and highly respected professionals who deserve the support, resources, and empowerment needed to thrive in their roles and provide highquality, engaging, and innovative learning experiences that meet the needs of students. And whereas through their dedication and tireless efforts to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in college, careers, and life, teachers play a vital role in shaping our future. And whereas teachers foster students strengths, inspire them to pursue their interests, and provide the guidance and support they need to grow and succeed, preparing them for meaningful and productive lives. And whereas atu as as student populations continue to grow more diverse, teachers must commit to ongoing professional learning to effectively adapt and meet the changing needs

of students in our schools. And whereas every Syracuse resident can remember a teacher who made a lasting difference in their own life or in the life of someone they love. And we extend our sincere gratitude to those dedicated educators during teacher appreciation week and throughout the year. Now therefore, the board of education and Pamela J. ODM, superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, be it resolved that May 4th through 8th, 2026 be proclaimed teacher appreciation week, a time to recognize the teachers whose commitment makes a difference in the lives of the children in the city of Syracuse. Ishahan bunny and >> that's last. >> Okay. All right. All right. I'm sorry.

>> Hello, my name is Funny Blue Eyes. >> Can you Sorry. Can you speak closer to the mic or pull it a little closer to you? >> Sure. Hello, my name is Fanny Blise. Thank you. Hello, my name is Fani BL and I'm a senior at PSLA High School. I have been involved in with Girls Inc. at YWCA since my freshman year. First during the lunchtime program at PSLA, then at the afternoon program, and now as an employee through CNY work. Through the program, I have gained the leadership skill and I I've been empowered to achieve my goal and lead learning important skill that will help me become an an independent success young adult. I'll be attendance as soon as we go in the fall. My intent I remain to connect girls Inc. at YWCA.

Would like to say thank you to the second city school due for allowing girls inc WCA to be in PSLA because I might not have been committed if the staff did not come to my school for longtime programming. Thank you. Thank you. Okay, thank you. Dana Melendez. >> Hi. Um, I was not prepared to speak tonight, but since I'm here anyway, I'm going to read to you an email written in 2024, and I'm going to ask you to extrapolate what I'm reading to what's going on with our refugee students who are being kidnapped by ICE. So, I'm not going to make the connection. I'll let you make it. You're all smarter than me. Again, it's from 2024. So, when I refer to last spring, I'm talking about 2023. I start and end nearly every day

with communication and a huge family group chat. My family in Israel and Palestine is close-knit, and we keep each other in the loop on everyday happenings. I'm going fast cuz I have three minutes. My aunt Florence sends a Shabbat name at the crack of dawn every Friday. I have to cut and paste a ton of Hebrew in Google Translate. I was disgusted, disappointed, and deeply confused when the school district made absolutely no statement and offered no direct support when the genocide started in Gaza. On March 3rd of 2022, the social studies department sent out an email with resources to teach our students about Ukraine. And that same newsletter, there were resources for lessons around the Nazi Holocaust. We all wore blue and had Ukrainian flags in our hallways. Many schools hosted food drives. Galina is

from Ukraine. I taught my sixth graders the refugee unit for two years and assisted other teachers with teaching it in the following years. We worked hard to help our students express their empathy around tragedies involve involving refugees in Syria, Germany, and Cuba with the aid of that novel. We were very frank with the students about the atrocities that took place during those during those three periods in history in those three countries. Refugee is a wonderful book and I have always been wildly grateful that our district made use of it. So imagine how deeply disturbing and upsetting it was to find that a month into a heavily publicized genocide happening in Gaza in real time under our noses there was silence. It was ignored by our dev department and by our district. I was not myself

during the holiday break because of that and it was deeply hurtful to return to the building in the new year just to be met with more silence. We have students and families who are truly baffled and saddened that there have been no efforts to release a statement of support or offer or offer lessons around what's happening in Gaza. It is impossible to overestimate what it has felt like to have this fully disregarded in a public school district in a sanctuary city. It has literally affected my health and made me feel actively unsafe. I should not have to spend any of my lunch or prep periods icing my face and ensuring my eyes aren't red from weeping. This is not a political issue. There are no politics here. Ukraine was not a political issue for our

district. I can't imagine that any of our Russian students would have felt unsafe last spring. Teaching the refugee unit was not political either. If we believe that positive, supportive cultures are created by the actions of each of us and are essential to teaching and learning. If we if we believe that the diversity of our students and families is a strength of our district, if we truly believe those things, I should not see devastation and disbelief in the faces of my peers and students around the district. I should not see or hear the deep confusion expressed by our Middle Eastern students and families over the silence of the district that has pledged to support them. [clears throat] Thank you. You just say you'll defer the time to state the convention. >> All right. Right now we

have the president's report but uh she's not present. So we will defer our time to superintendent. >> You know I love extra time. [laughter] So thank you. um BP Rifford and congratulations on your new appointment. >> Thank you. >> Um so I would I always enjoy bragging about our students and so our students I got to see some great work in musicals. Congratulations to our students who put on performances the last few weeks. I went to see a fabulous show at PSLA, The Lightning Thief, and I told them that I was going to give them a shout out here and a shout out in the um next midweek minute. It was amazing. So, kudos to um our students and staff who put on the Lightning Thief at PSLA. It was a wonderful show. I heard

that the show was great. Alice in Wonderland. I wanted to go on Saturday, but the show had to be cancelled because I believe it was a power outage, but I did hear that that show was absolutely wonderful. And I did get to see Matilda at Ed Smith a couple of weeks ago, and our students are amazing actors and actresses, and the students behind the scenes are doing a great job putting these shows on. And if you haven't had an opportunity to go see our students perform in plays, please do so. I'm the shows, the sets, everything. Quality, quality, quality. Kudos to our music departments, our drama departments, and kudos to teachers at the elementary level who just take on an extra assignment. Uh the plays have been absolutely outstanding. This year, we've had some great

successful events. I want to shout out uh the CTE department. I got an opportunity last week to go to the change of champions event. The mayor was there and we were able to uh see many of those students receive awards and also our CTE staff receive awards. Um our CTE pathways are outstanding and we are getting the good news out there. Again, I would like to say congratulations to our special education department and the office of student support. On Saturday, they hosted the neurodeiversity fair. It was outstanding. I love the bubble man. Keep the bubble man coming cuz he does a great job in the gym. So, kudos to that department and our special education department as well. >> This is great. Buffalo Bills coach of the week. I'm going to pause for 10 seconds.

Buffalo Bills coach of the week. Congratulations to Syracuse East girls flag football coach Jeff Pettis who was named a Buffalo Bills high school flag football coach of the week in the Syracuse region. Congratulations to coach Pettis. uh coach's team competed its regular season with a record of 15-1 and will now compete in the playoffs. >> So, Pluto's Nope, I'm not done yet. Thank you for the extra time. Um, I'd like to give a shout out to to Congressman John Anion and uh Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens for their continued support. many of the events that I show up to in the district, Congressman uh Congressman Manion and uh Syracuse mayor, they are there at many of the events supporting our students. And I just want to give a kudos to them for basically showing up to

all the events and taking time out of their busy schedules to do so. Here's your opportunity. Get your pens and pencils ready because I'm going to say mark your calendars. We have some upcoming events for our students. On Thursday, May 14th, our Steam School students will be putting on their first performance in the Micron, gotta say it right, Micron Lincoln Auditorium. It's called The Spotlight Returns, A Legacy Renewed. So, be sure to go and support our Steam student our steam school students uh on this performance at this performance. On Thursday, May 21st, we will be we will be holding our annual Tony Awards at the Palace Theater at 5:30. Uh again, on Saturday, May 30th, our math department will hold another everybody counts event called The Greatest Hits at the Everson Museum. And our retiree

and years of service awards ceremon ceremony is going to be held on Tuesday, June 2nd at Le Moine College. These are wonderful events. So, if you have time in your schedule, please make sure you attend any of the events. That's my superintendent report. >> Thank you, superintendent. Thank you. Um, are there any items the commissioners wish to bring for discussion at this time? I encourage um anyone that has the time to uh attend the uh read across steam event that is have uh they hold annually where you get to go read in classroom. Commissioner Root was there as well as was the superintendent and um it was lovely to see you guys there and it's just so much fun to go in and and read to the kids. It's anytime we have an opportunity to

go into the classrooms. And of course, um, shout out to the to the social studies eighth graders at Roberts for presenting to us this week. They did an amazing job advocating for themselves and for the students that come after them. They were absolutely fantastic. >> I concur. It was I haven't read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom in uh 20 years. Kind of nice. >> Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Huh. >> Great book. Yeah. >> Um I just want to share that the um annual Central New York School Board Association dinner is May 20th and I've sort of kept something away quiet from you all commissioners, not on purpose. I just wanted to see how the outcome would be and I was allowed to nominate Tama as school board um person of the year and they gave her

that honor. So at the dinner on the 20th and she will be honored um along with possibly others that are in the Boseies. So, she's our first SCSD school board person um that will be honored and I want to thank Eileen for all her help, but I didn't say anything not to keep it from you, but because I just want to make sure everything was okay and and before we found um found out the results. So, and same thing with the superintendent. So, that um it's one thing to know that she's going to be honored with everything that we went through and she's been through um during her tenure as president. So, I'm really excited about that. So, >> Thank you, Eileene. >> All right. Uh, can I have a motion to approve the consent

agenda? I'm sorry. >> Oh, superintendent will introduce the res. >> Superintendent is going to introduce all of the resolutions and we shall vote thereafter. >> Absolutely.
