uh in the high school so all of our students have an opportunity to watch us today want to thank all the parents for taking time out um to come come enjoy our program I would like to start by congratulating all 54 of our award winners for their dedication and commitment to the activity please give these kids a big round of applause I would also like to thank all of our coaches teachers staff and administrators for their support of all of our extracurricular activities and a big thank you goes out to June rigney who organizes this program and is in charge of ordering all the jackets and patches June thank you very much I want to take a moment to explain how each letter jacket is earned first each student athlete must earn a varsity letter

in in their sport or extracurricular activity at on or after after your sophomore year every sport is a little bit different on how you can earn a varsity letter after earning your varsity letter you get size for a jacket in our office and this is at no cost to the student then the fall of your junior or senior year you receive your jacket as these student athletes are doing today we have been very fortunate to have First Federal banks sponsor our letter jackets and pay for them through their generosity our students have the opportunity to proudly wear their jackets with no cost to them or their family please give a big round of applause for First Federal Bank I want to now turn the program over to our sponsor president of First Federal Savings and

Loan Jim sailor and I think we have a guest speaker his wife Lyn Lynn today as well thank you guys thank you and good morning I am Jim Jim sailor from the class of 1976 I am the President of First Federal here in Greensburg and I'm here along with my wife Lynn we thank superintendent Tom Hunter principal Mike Myers and athletic director Stacy Meer for letting us sponsor this letter jacket program First Federal is celebrating its 141st year of being in business since 188 8 3 We Are The Last of The Almost 100% owned financial institutions here in Greensburg we are governed by a five member board of directors and four of us are Greensburg High grads director First Federal director Ross Davis Tom hunner and myself are high school classmates we all feel as

though we owe a lot of thanks to our coaches teachers family and friends for encouraging us we are all big Believers in the power of an encouraging word for the last 18 years while presenting these jackets I have told stories of my sports participation in the 1970s this time we decided to let my girlfriend and high school classmate give the program instead of me and with that I will turn the microphone over to my wife Lynn hi I'm Lyn spring Meer sailor and the one who has always edited Jim's presentations this time though with the Indiana Fever Caitlyn Clark Euphoria when he handed me his draft of this year's presentation I decided to shred his and write my story to share with you today I also decided I'd allow him to do a little bit

of editing for me before the start of my freshman year here in 1972 the federal government had just passed a civil rights law called Title 9 you probably have heard of it in history class in simple terms Title 9 gave all schools the go-ahead to have girls team sports before then hard to imagine we girls had no teams to be part of oh you could be in gymnastics Club here so Greensburg High School formed a volleyball team 40 girls signed up played three games two at North and one at South and a tennis team seven girls four matches total my friends on that first tennis team encouraged me to join them for my sophomore year so I had to learn how to play on summer break there were four tennis courts out here that summer

surrounded by Farm Fields I rode my bike to the courts with my wooden Racket and the bo boys tennis coach Mr George grol taught us to play boys and girls Mrs Patty hooer was our coach in this new experience of being a part of a real team we were so thankful she cared about us we learned how to win and we learned how to lose especially facing Columbus North our first meet I loved the game I loved my cool tennis outfits short dress most were Handmade by our mothers and My Adidas blue suede Court shoes with three of my best classmate friends I finished my senior year as a number two singles player and continued playing doubles with friends for many years girls basketball was added my senior year here and again I was encouraged

to try it by my buddies found out right away how physical the first practice was out of breath with the running and I couldn't handle it so I became a student manager there was one gy brand new and in the same season boys and girls had to share facilities to practice the girls could only practice two days a week in the new gym often 7even to9 in the evening not after school the other days they practiced at the Armory or German Elementary School German was the school in town for fifth and sixth grade students the building today houses senior apartments and is over 100 years old in the small gym in the basement when the girls practice layups they had to be extra careful to avoid banging into the solid brick walls a few feet

from the Baseline there may be a french fry or a piece of spaghetti squished because the court was also the kids lunchroom and the custodians may have missed a few food items Miss Trish Walters an elementary school school teacher was asked to be the coach with no experience she had not played basketball bless her heart she told the girls I'll do the best and we'll learn together at one of the practices my friend Nancy broke her ankle and Coach Walters took her immediately in her Volkswagen to the hospital where she called her parents why coach Walters didn't have access to a telephone in the school everything was locked locked up hard to believe but there were no cell phones in 1976 the first girls game nervousness and excitement against Brookville the Brookville team started the

game with a full court press and continued the entire game I remember sitting next to the other manager and Whispering oh my gosh aren't you glad we're managers and not playing the final score was 110 to10 the next day at school humiliated the girls endured the teasing Jim wasn't at the game but he had always heard it was a second half before we got the ball down on our end of the floor to take a shot I don't really know but that may be the worst loss in Indiana high school girls basketball history that first season there were nine games scheduled three with South dear North didn't have a team yet the best score at the last South game was an improvement 38 Greensburg 54 South decar still our team lost every game that season

the followup to the first girls basketball team no surprise Greensburg had a new coach high school math teacher Mr Bill winning Mr winning took over to move the program forward bringing his prior experience as the reserve boys basketball coach just two years later there were two seniors who had played in that painful first game Amy and Jan at the Brookville game this time Greensburg was leading at halftime Amy and Jan pulled coach winning aside and pleaded with him to let them press the rest of the game he said okay the final score 60 to 43 Redemption for the good gals my how far we we've come I would play I play pickle balm now mostly at Rebecca Park courts dedicated to the memory of Mr grol he would have been a great pickle ball player

had it been popular during his lifetime I credit my down the line shot to Mr G when I'm on the court I have flashbacks to High School tennis I realize how lucky I am to be the first generation to play tennis in high school because of Title 9 I don't take that for granted here I am 52 years later the grandmother of two grandsons playing a high school sport when I have the chance to get them out on the pickle ball court a couple of times a year there's teasing competitiveness and camaraderie as if age doesn't matter we have fun Greensburg high school students guess we need to turn this way Mr sailor and I from the the class of 1976 our wish for you is to enjoy your sports experience with your family and

friends I'll turn the thank you Mr sailor and First Federal for your continued support and thank you Mrs sailor for those memories um I know a couple of my sisters 78 and 80 were parts of those starter female squads uh in multiple Sports and when you think about Title 9 you think about the history uh and how many young ladies are sitting back here as well we thank you for trail relazing for gchs at this time we want to acknowledge this year's letter jacket uh winners and our letter jacket winners will be coming in front of the podium to shake hands with our um sponsors here along with Mr Hunter and Mr Meyer and so at this time uh students when I call your name please be moving forward the 2024 letter jacket winners Bryson
