Moved and seconded on the question. All in favor? >> I. >> Motion passes. >> Vice President Wilson, I'd like to add something to no business. >> Yes. Go ahead. Um, I just I just want to name a few things that I think we've accomplished as a district in particular, the staff, uh, the teachers, the principal, and a lot of the leadership under Dr. Caracus. I'm going to just mention three things. Our math scores have been

011the best this district has ever had in the past 12 years, ever since the Common Core was implemented. I'd like to tell I I don't see Bonnie but also uh our special ed children. We've managed to house around Oh, I didn't see you. About 15 students. And for people that don't understand, when we outplace, it's about $150,000 per student between tuition and busing. So, we've had this cost avoidance and we're going to continue to grow the special ed program. Again, our staff and the leadership of Dr. Caracus has been part of this this move and this shift. And then lastly, it's a simple but but a very impactful one at my 119year-old building. Somebody cracked the code and we finally have air conditioning again due to some of the leadership decisions that were made. And

012similar to how when we're at work and we have smart goals, you exceed and meet them or supersede them and you're compensated based on those goals. And the numbers are the numbers at the end of the day. So, I actually just want to clarify that when we set these goals for our district and for the leadership team, including Dr. Caracus, we set these goals to be in the best interest of our children, of our staff, and our community taxpaying members. That's my job. That's our job. Right? As trustees, we represent and serve this community. And I believe our community deserves a transparent process when it comes to measuring against these goals. So, I'd like to propose a motion to approve a 5-year extension of superintendent employment agreement with the board of education and the council

013preparing the necessary contract to reflect the negotiated terms approved by the board. But in order for that motion to go forward, I'd have to get a second. Do I have a second from anybody on this vote? >> Come on, guys. My motion does not pass but >> having no second the motion does not carry. >> It needs to be seconded. I yield and the silence is >> so we'll move on to the next agenda. >> Yes, sir. >> No, no, no, no, no, no, no. >> All right. What's next? >> No, no. We keep order. >> Oh, comments. >> We collected the comment cards prior to we made >> we made an announcement um five minutes before the meeting that all common cards I definitely made the announcement. >> Only those cards that were passed

014in before the meeting started will be allowed to speak pursuant to our policy. >> Only those cards that were turned in before the meeting started will be allowed to speak pursuant to our policy. No, the motion was not on the minutes. It was made by a trustee. The motion did not carry. We will not be entertaining that motion. >> We do not discuss personnel matters in public session. It was told >> mythend >> we are not discussing personnel matters in public. I'm going to ask you to sit down so we can continue the meeting. Thank you. Thomas Darling. >> You can hear me now. Okay, >> good evening to the board, the superintendent, and everyone in attendance. Uh, for those who don't know me, I'm Thomas Dowling, and today I address you as a parent

015of our district, a proud parent of our district. I want to express my deep appreciation to this board. The trajectory of Valley Stream 24 uh has a direct reflection of our leadership and dedication to our children. This board has successfully built a culture of excellence and as a parent I want to stand beside you and protect that momentum. When we look at the data from the last three years, it's clear that the superintendent is yielding extraordinary results across every single student subset. Under the collective guidance, our math proficiency is up to 72%, the highest it's been since Next Generation and Common Core Assessments began. Our students with disabilities have nearly doubled their performance index scores in ELA and math, jumping from 42.9% to over 71. Because of the positive culture you have fostered, cross chronic

016absenteeism has sharply declined across the board, including a massive 30% drop of our English language learners. We have successfully brought back 813 special education students to our district, expanding opportunities right here at home while maintaining a perfect fiscal stress score for two consecutive years. Because of this relentless innovation, Valley Stream 24 is now one of only 175 districts nationwide to be accepted into the prestigious League of Innovation Innovative Schools. Our neighborhood districts Our neighborhood districts see the success happening here in Valley Stream 24. And we want to secure our future and ensure strategic plans you created fully realized. We must provide our leadership with resources, continuity, and stability that they need to stay focused entirely on our children. I know how carefully you protect our taxpayers, our students, and our educators. However, looking at past

017year regional data, our superintendent was given a temporary contract and which is highly unusual for a leader performing at this elite level. If we want to finalize the incredible work we have started, we cannot be on short-term year-to-year adjustments. I strongly recommend on behalf of myself and the parents I represent that we offer the superintendent a stable multi-year contract that will bring us all the way through 2030. This ensures our winning leadership stays intact to fully execute and complete vision 23 uh 2030's framework. Thank you for your time, your leadership, and your continued partnership. And thank you for your courage, Trusty Matthew. Thank you, Aisha Darby. Okay, good evening. My name is Aisha Darby and I am a resident of Valley Stream and a parent in this community. And thank you for the opportunity to

018speak tonight. I'm here to voice my strong support for Dr. Caracus in the direct in in the direction district 24 is heading under his leadership. When we talk about strong schools, we often point to tests, test scores, or budgets, and those matter. But what holds all of this together is leadership that is steady, present, and willing to listen. This is what we have in our current superintendent. Under Dr. Caracus District 24 has made real measurable progress. We have seen gains in academic achievement, stronger student support systems, a genuine commitment to innovation, a responsible financial stewardship. These are not abstract talking points. They are the foundation of They are the foundation our children stand on every single day that walk into Brooklyn Avenue, Carbonero, and Buck. Vision 2030 is a long-term promise to this community and

019a long-term promise. Promises require stability to keep it. You cannot build a decade of progress on a revolving door. Continued success depends on consistent leadership and a board that supports the people doing the work. I also speak to something more personal because leadership is not only what happens in board packets and presentations. It is how a superintendent treats families he serves. Dr. Kraus has an open door and he means it. I have emailed him, received thoughtful responses. I have called with questions and concerns and been met with respect, not bureaucracy. He is flexible. He listens. He follows through. For a parent, that responsiveness is not a small thing. It tells us that our voices reach the top and that the person leading our district actually wants to hear from us. That kind of accessibility builds

020trust and trust is exactly what a school community needs to keep moving forward together. So my ask tonight is simple. Let us keep the momentum. Let us give Dr. Crocus the stable, supportive environment he needs to finish the work that vision 2030 began. Let us be a board and a community that backs leadership that has earned our confidence. I have confidence in Dr. Caracus. I support our current superintendent up. >> I'm sorry. Your time is right now. >> Thank you for your time. Bina Cassim. >> Good evening everyone. My name is Bina Casim and I am parents for Nathan and Dylan Casim. Dylan was a student here last year, graduated under Dr. Karaka's um leadership and Dr. Komas. Um, I'm here tonight to express my support for renewing our superintendent contract. Strong leadership is essential

021for success of our schools and over the past few years, Dr. Caracus has demonstrated a commitment to our students, teachers, and community. Under his leadership, District 24 has made significant progress in areas such as academic achievements, student programs, fiscal responsibilities, school safety, and community engagement. Effective leadership should be measured by vision, integrity, responsibility, and results. Dr. Caracus has shown a willingness to listen, work collaboratively, and make decisions focused on what is best for students. My eldest graduated before he came. We passed through a few different superintendent. And a lot of you might not like what I'm going to say, but our last one love his dogs more than he loved our children. during a pandemic. So when we were talking about superintendent, I want to say thank you. I'm very I'm not happy at this

022m point. I'm very upset that we cannot give him the opportunity to serve us and to show our children and community what he could do for us. He came here, he listened. And the first time he came, I met him at Brooklyn Avenue. We had a barbecue and I told him I said this is what we need as a district. I was actually on the board for the program that they hired for what we need in our superintendent and this is what we said we needed and this is who we got. We are happy. We love you and we love everything that you are doing for our children right now. Both of my boys are excelling. My eldest is going to graduate south next year. Dylan is at South in seventh grade and he is

023doing wonderful. And I must say your science program, all your technology, everything that you're giving to this district. You're working so hard that we as parents and residents of Valley Stream, we need to acknowledge that. We need to know that he we need him to know that we support him and that is what we should do here tonight. And thank you whoever don't agree with me. Well, so be it. I'm a taxpaying resident of Valley Stream and we support you. We put the board here to work for us as a resident of Valley Stream and you know what? We put you here. I'm sorry your time is up. Thank you. R. Craig Watson. Good evening everyone. Uh, first I'm going to say I'm a little bit shaken and that is unusual. My voice is trembling

024right now because I really am upset. Three years ago we were on the state eds list of schools in need of improvement. Not good. I understand that the data they used was skewed to come to that uh result. However, perception was still there. That was three years ago. It's changed. It's changed since then. Three years ago, I met Dr. Caracus. The first meeting, I am sure after that meeting, he didn't want to see my face anymore because I brought a list of things to talk about. And it it got so bad that the person next to me, I realized there were people behind me waiting to speak to him and he said, "You know what? I want to talk to you a little bit more." And he did. Most of the things on that list

025has been addressed. And I'm not going to repeat some of the things that other people have said because he's addressed many of those things from air conditioning, state test scores, MAT growth, everything has improved. I'm a data guy. I look at the numbers and not just for my ch children. I look at it for the district and it has improved three years. Beyond that, he is available and present. Truly available and present. Not fake or pretend available and present. We can approach him. He listens. Uh with his leadership, we've seen the changes. So again, I am not going to repeat what other people have said, but um you know, beyond his availability and making that administrative parent connection, I I've seen that he's fostered professional learning. He's just coordinated so many things for the district.

026Um he I I speak to parents. I see the caliber of caliber of people we have here in Valley Stream. I see the intelligence and the potential of our young children if given the right opportunities starting with education. And it's apparent that Dr. Caracus sees this too and wants to continue to move our district in the right direction. He obviously cares about the community and sees the potential greatness in our students. So, let's keep someone like this here so that we can continue this forward momentum and keep everything going. We don't need someone else who wants to come in and pad their pension and do everything else. We need someone who's truly present and is willing to keep the momentum going. And we have great principles in the building. And I think that this leadership

027team has been doing an excellent job. And again, I really am a little upset right now. So I'm I I I jumped around because I don't understand what this is all about. Thank you, >> Liz Snider. Hello everyone. I am a mom of three boys. Um, I am not an educator, so I'm just here as a parent. um probably like most of you here. Um I am a little surprised at you know what I just heard. Um I do want to thank our superintendent, our principal, our administration, everyone here, our board of education because I think we just had a fabulous year and I think everything has been going really well. Um I currently have one son at Carbonero. I have two at South who are previously at Carbonero. We moved here during COVID when

028things were a little crazy. Um, and my youngest I've seen has really benefited from all the improvement improvements that I've seen in our district. He's much happier now that we have the air conditioning in the building. Um, he's receiving, from what I see compared to the co years, a very strong education in core subjects. He's reading really well. He's having spelling, which they did not have during COVID. There's a lot of things that I'm very pleased about in our district. We have Spanish. We didn't have the Spanish program when I first came here. Um, we also have robotics. We have a more robust challenge program, which I hear not even a lot of the other districts have. We also have a new drama club. We have this right here that's going to be happening tomorrow.

029Um, so I just want to recognize everything that our superintendent and our administration and our board have done. Um, it feels to me like as a parent that there's just a lot of improvements. Um, also the other thing is that he knows my children. Like he knows my children's names. He says hi to my son. He engages with him. Um, that's something as a parent that I like to see. I like to see with the teachers. I like to see them engaging with my kids and talking to them. They're little humans. They're real people. So that to me is a very personal level. And that's something that I really value. I value the personal relationship that a superintendent has with our kids. Um, and it's important because my uh my middle son apparently told me

030that he was actually part of the selection process. I guess they went to the kids and they had a little meeting with the kids about who the superintendants were and like they got to read one question to them. They're very excited about that. and his was about the school lunch and our superintendent apparently responded and said that he was going to make changes to the school lunch and he did and he followed through with that and that really made an impression on my son. So again, I'm just speaking as a parent but in my experience um this has been our superintendent has been great and my kids know him and love him and I'm a little surprised at all of this myself. So thank you very much for Emmanuel Longo. Oh, thank you. I didn't

031even start yet. Um, look, it it tonight there's so much to talk about. Um, first of all, clap it off to the teachers who are sticking around for their tenure, right? That's that's impressive. Thank you. the new teachers joining us as well. And I know we have some that are retiring. Um so welcome to the community, the new ones. Excited to have you a part of this family. Um I'm I'm blown away by multiple aspects here. First of all, the community. Uh you know, you should clap it up for yourselves for being here, being present, um representing uh our community, and at the same time talking about uh Dr. Caracus and all the special things that he's done. Let the data speak for itself. I'm not coming to talk about that. I'm coming to talk

032about the person. His engagement is second to none. The fact that the the gentleman will send you a message asking you why weren't you invited to that particular event that you hosted your school is an example of what he wants to be a part of. He's constantly challenging the status quo. How could we be better? And in this community, that is something that we need in a leader. The every day showing up to these meetings and all of you that are standing up there have seen me when there's only five people sitting in here. He stands up for us and represents us and listens to what we need and delivers on those results. And it's not just with me, it's with every parent that he has that engagement with. If we express any concerns or

033hear any parent concerns and we tell them there's a person you could reach out to, it's always been Dr. Caracus. We have amazing administrators, but sometimes they feel like they want to hear from a higher power. And he's shown nothing but empathy, professionalism, and everything that he's done. I can't believe that there's doubts when there's nothing but results. So, I'm really interested to hear when this goes up for vote and what the decision is and then ultimately what the decision is after that because what you have it is a man that is dedicated to this community. I see him about during off hours in my community. Okay, that is that's not making it up. I've enjoyed a meal next to him at a restaurant and that's because he's present and wants to be a part

034of the change and the growth to this Valley Stream District 24 community. So, I hope that when you reflect and you think about the decisions that you're making, you think about how the community stood up today asking for this gentleman to continue to be a part of it and deliver on everything that he set out to do. Thank you, Dr. Caracus. Dwayne Davidson. >> Good evening everyone. My name is Dr. Robin Davson. I reside in Valley Stream and I am a proud parent of the Brooklyn Avenue School. I'm writing to express my support for Dr. Crocus as a parent and as a co-president of the Brooklyn Avenue School because of the meaningful changes he has brought to our school district. What has stood out the most is the changes that that the changes have not

035remained ideas on paper. They have been translated into action resulted into real change for our students, our family and our communities. One example many have shared is the class of 2030 spaces at Brooklyn Avenue. This initiative demonstrates the innovative thinking that Dr. Caracus has brought to our school communities. Another significant accomplishment is bringing the 61 special education program to our community. For many many families, this means their children can receive the services that their children need according to their IEPs. But this also gives our family access to be and give our children access to be closer to home and doesn't don't have to travel miles away to get what they need. Dr. Caracus is also the first superintendent who has delivered on a promise that many believe should be a basic expectation, air conditioning. As

036taxpayers, our students should have spaces and access to comfortable learning environments. While this work is still being implemented, doc Dr. Caracus has uh committed to follow through and we are looking forward to the completion of this project. When Dr. Caracus also first joined the district, many parents and community members raised concerns about the diversity of workplace and whether it reflected the rich diversity of our student population. As a parent and community member, I wanted to know whether there was a genuine commitment of hiring uh educators and leaders who look like our brilliant students from our Hispanic and East Asian students to African-American students to our Caucasian students. Dr. Caracus listened and he and now we are seeing that diversity reflected in each and every one of our schools. leaders. Clap it up for that. Leadership

037is not just measured by promises alone, but the willingness to listen and respond. And the responses have come in many ways. Our monthly updates that we received, not just email, but video from Dr. Caracus. Our enrichment activity activities that we see across our school communities. Um the connection with children. I someone just spoke about the direct connection and my twins come home and they know Dr. Caracus by by name. While there is always more work to do, we know that and the pro but the progress that has been made and his leadership is evident and I have my children are in fourth grade and I'm seeing this evident now. Thank you. Daniela a yellow. Hi, this is Daniela and I'm Olivia and we are here today to talk about the good things our superintendent has

038done for us. We are soon to be graduates, but we still care that incoming students have his wonderful leadership and we want to support our superintendent who has supported and shown gratitude to all of VS24. >> Dr. Carac has put in a second lunch option for people who can't or don't eat meat and pork. We wrote a letter to him in fourth grade and we and he took the time to read it off his own busy day. Also, Dr. Crocus gets along very well with families. We've gotten feedback from other families that he is a nice man. We think so, too. >> I also believe that Dr. Caracus is an amazing superintendent. He does so much and still tries his best to attend everything he can. He attends concerts, contests, and any other school event

039which makes students feel supported and cared about. Dr. Caracus also knows many students and we personally have seen him approach students including us and he remembers their name easily and we believe that he deserves to be here. >> To con to conclude, we believe that Dr. Dr. Kuracus is an amazing superintendent. Jana, right? Good evening everyone. Um I am I've been in Valley Stream for about my child been be Brooklyn Avenue for about five years and you know I have been in different school districts and I've never met a superintendent. I've never seen him but I know Dr. Caracus. I've known him for the last three years. He's been a part of my children's lives and he's been very attentive to them. My daughter is one of the people who mentioned the school lunches cuz

040she has allergies like crazy and he has been very attentive to that. It's it's weird to me that you know the the precedent that's being set is you hire someone at a certain level, you ask them to change something, they change it and now there's no repercussions. There's no follow through on our part which seems very off. It seems very strange as someone who runs businesses. is not a really excellent way to run something. If the person is doing a great job is not to keep them stuck in a position that they cannot continue to grow and do the things that they've been doing for our students. Now, my child is going to be in the system. It's third and fifth grade at this point. We're going to be with someone for the next I'm

041not even sure how many years. And my personal presence is that Dr. Crock is there to ensure that as they transition to different schools that the same kind of of community that he has built continues to grow and it continues to proceed to every single one. I've seen students who are coming into this into the district who can use this kind of support. As someone coming from New York City, I know the difference. I've been to New York City schools. I have no idea who the board is. I had no idea who the superintendent is. But to have someone who's actually there for students is incredibly needed and has been a very pleasure having you here. And I definitely want to see this continue for next few years. Thank you. >> Okay, that's it. Let's

042We'll move on to the superintendence report this time. >> Good evening everyone. Thank you for coming. I know the Knicks are playing tonight. Uh and you're here with us on an important night where we're honoring tenure. Um I did want to start by uh acknowledging President Herrera who was not here today. Well, President Herrera did ask for a statement to be played. >> No. >> Sorry. >> No, not that. >> Okay. She could not be here tonight. Uh and she does express her gratitude to the community. Uh there was a statement that she put out that she because she couldn't be here, her daughter is uh an Eagle Scout and is getting recognized. Um and as a result, she wanted to voice um her appreciation to the community. Um what I can share with our

043district is that we are innovating. We are making the connection. Uh and part of data which is really really critical is that uh we talk about district achievement uh and it's something that we're all very proud of. Uh I received correspondence from the better outcomes research regarding our district's student achievement for the past three school years particularly with economically disadvantaged students. Economically disadvantaged students are a subgroup of students who historically underperform their peers in achievement measures and our district was highlighted for its great results uh in this important subgroup. Uh our principles were interviewed uh and now uh districts across the country uh will learn from Valley Stream 24 and the impact we are making uh on students that are historically underserved. Uh and it's a testament to the work that is happening here at

044Valley Stream 24. Uh the PTA barbecues are a wonderful event that happened. Thank you to the Carbonero PTA for the first uh barbecue that took place. Uh and we do have Brooklyn Avenue having its barbecue coming up tomorrow. And then Buck School will host uh its barbecue as well. Uh so thank you. The partnership is incredible with our parents and our associations. Uh so we truly truly do appreciate that. Uh I heard air conditioning. We are very excited that Carbon Arrow School's air conditioning project has been completed. Uh and we have uh Brooklyn Avenue School almost complete as well. Being that Brooklyn Avenue School is an older building. Uh there is a speestous abatement that goes with that. Uh, and we are very close to completion at Brooklyn Avenue 2, which is an incredible investment

045uh, for our staff, for our students. Uh, and when the weather gets warmer there, you know, there's no data that may showcase uh, what impact that has, but as a former teacher myself, I know how difficult uh, it is to sit in a classroom and teach uh, young learners who are sweating and cannot focus. And so, this investment uh, is is supportive of our educators and our students. Uh just some upcoming important dates and events. Uh again, June 11th, we have a barbecue at Brooklyn Avenue School. Our first ever inaugural drama club performance uh is happening tomorrow night. That is at 700 p.m. June 12th, we have a half day for students. That is uh an 11:30 a.m. dismissal. June 15th, 16th, and 17th, I know we have some sixth graders here. Uh we are

046very proud to honor them with our graduations. June 15th is our Buck graduation. 16th is Brooklyn Avenue School. The 17th is Carbonero School. Uh June 19th is no school because that is Junth. Uh and then June 26th is the last day of school and dismissal then is going to be at 9:30 a.m. Um we're very proud of all the accomplishments uh for the district. We do have some recognitions uh that we want to uh acknowledge. Uh the New York State School Boards Association uh does acknowledge uh school board members for a certificate of recognition uh for attending professional learning sessions. Uh each year they receive different levels. Uh if trustees have received a level before, they um you know these are given to the trustees that are continuing uh in their professional learning. Uh and

047so the New York State School Boards Association uh would like to congratulate uh Trustee Clark for earning a level one board achievement award under the New York State School Board Association's board excellence recognition program which is a certificate of recognition. Okay. Um, we also have from the New York State School Boards Assoc Association a level three board mastery award. Uh, this again is for board excellence recognition. With this comes a certificate for a free one-day event. Uh it excludes the convention or convention related events which happen to be the most expensive. Uh certificate of recognition. Um and a padfolio that comes with it as well. So a nice kit. This is honored to vice president Wilson. Congratulations. Okay. Um, >> yes. Yes. Okay. Um we are honoring our three trustees who um have served on

048on our board of education up until this school year. Uh and so the first uh is in recognition of now legislator Nunes who served on our board for over three years of dedicated service to Valley Stream School District 24. Um I know there were some words of of uh support for her that were given in our December meeting, but we are formally honoring her uh at this business meeting. Uh she has gone above and beyond for the students uh and the district community. uh she has put students first, always making decisions with kids and staff in mind. Uh and supported what you know has been an incredible vision of vision 2030. Uh so in honor of trustee Nunes who could or legislator Nunes, former trustee Nunes uh who could not be here tonight, uh we

049do have her chief of staff who will acknowledge and and receive uh the award tonight. So congratulations to legislator Nunes. Okay, next up is President Herrera, who as I shared could not be here tonight. Um Melissa Herrera has dedicated over six years uh of service to the board of education. Uh as I shared about legislator Nunees, she has put students first in every decision that she has made. Uh super a superintendent's job is uh 247. uh being a board president this year, she received calls from me late at night on weekends and never once did she not pick up the call. Uh she is a mother of, you know, beautiful children. Uh and yet she still made time uh to speak with me and ensure that district operations were always successful. Um she has advocated

050fiercely for students with disabilities uh to ensure that our 813 program was successful in the district. Uh an incredible asset to Valley Stream 24, an incredible asset to a superintendent who you know that board uh superintendent relationship is so critical and having a president uh that you can collaborate with uh was just an incredible experience this year with her. Uh, and so we honor, she knows she's not here, but please join me in honoring Melissa Herrera for her six years of dedicated service on the board of education presented today, June 10th, 2026, on behalf of Valley Stream School District 24. I'll say everything you supposed to speak. >> Um, so now we get to Armando Hernandez. Um, I didn't prepare anything. Um, I expected Melissa to do it, but she uh did not show up

051today. So, now it's on me. So, um, when Armando first came to the house to talk, uh, to someone about maybe running for the board, he actually came for my wife. Um, and then when she turned him down, she said, "Uh, why don't you speak to Marcus? Um, he's got a big mouth and he might do it." Um, and so it's because of him, uh, that I'm here, uh, doing something that I love and enjoy. Um, Arando has always put the school board first. He's been a wealth of knowledge and experience and professionalism. Um, and he will be sorely missed. So, I just want to thank Armando for everything. Thank you, Arando. Okay, next up we are honoring our staff tonight, which is what we are here for, which is an incredible uh opportunity every

052June uh to really uh reflect reflect on the experiences, the lives that our staff, our educators touch each and every day. Uh some of our staff who have been here for over 30 years that I've had the privilege to work with uh for the past three years. Uh that impact goes a long way. Uh our teachers touch lives for you know decades to come. I know that our students will remember our educators who are retiring. Uh so this next portion is to honor uh our retirees who have dedicated service uh to Valley Stream 24. And for this section, I'm going to call up Dr. Kio who will assist in the coordination of speeches that will come from our building principles and administrators. >> Good evening. Thank you, Dr. Crocus. Thank you, members of the board

053of education. Tonight we're very lucky to have three different groups of educators at different points in their career and there's a lot to celebrate. Many of them have loved ones that are with us tonight. So tonight we really get to celebrate three very different groups of individuals who are really dedicated to the advancement of children learning and to the Valley community. Um first I invite Dr. Komas Vice President Wilson, members of the board of education, Dr. Crocus, teachers, and community members. I am priv privileged tonight to speak on behalf of Mrs. Tony Herwig as she advances into retirement. Mrs. Herwig is a wonderful educator, colleague, and a friend who has dedicated her life's work to the students and families of the Valley Stream 24 school district. Tony began her teaching career in the Valley Stream

05424 school district in 1995 at the William Elbuk School under the principal ship of Miss Diana Peron. Throughout her career, Tony demonstrated professionalism, uh, compassion, and excellence in everything she did. Her impact extend extended far beyond the walls of her classroom touching decades of students, families, and colleagues who have been fortunate enough to be with her in the classroom and work alongside of her. This includes myself. A very lucky day happened for BAS in 2009 when Tony joined the staff at Brooklyn MU school and I was lucky enough to be the principal at the time. What neither of us knew then was that we would spend the next 17 years together working alongside one another in service to the children and the families of the Brooklyn Avenue school as she continued her service to the

055amazing Valley Stream 24 school district. It's been a joy to watch Tony interact with her students, whether greet them greeting them at the start of the day, celebrating their success or helping them navigate challenges as she possessed a love a loving ability to make every child feel like a member of her classroom family. Students naturally gravitated toward her because they knew she genuinely cared. Her smile, patience, and kindness became the most important and significant things that each student began their day with. The stories and memories of Tony are countless. One thing is certain, she deeply admired. She is deeply admired. The lessons she taught and the relationships she built have left incredible memories upon our school community. Long after tonight's celebration and soon, the last day of this school year, her influence will continue to

056be reflected in the lives of those she inspired. On a personal note, it is very difficult to give this speech. Uh, after working with Mrs. heart rate for 17 years. It is hard to imagine Brooklyn Ammy and Valley Stream 24 without Tony. Together, we celebrated count countless student successes, navigated challenges, welcomed new Brooklyn ammy families, and created memories that we will carry forever. I think it's fair to say that all of Brooklyn am school have the same sentiment. Tony, I will miss our conversations. I will miss your wisdom. I will miss your calm presence. I will miss your unwavering focus on what's best for students. Most of all, I will miss knowing that you were just a few steps away on the first floor in your classroom and in that classroom with someone who truly

057deeply cared about students, families, and our Brooklyn Avenue school community. There's something I was this there was something I will always remember throughout the years, whether we spoke about students, classrooms, or the work ahead, Tony. Tony would inevitably find her way back to a simple phrase, I love being a teacher. These were words that she expressed to me earlier this week. I love being a teacher. At first glance, those words may seem simple, yet they reveal something and everything you need to know about Tony. After all the years, after all the lessons, after all the innovations, and after all the successes, she never lost sight of the reason she entered into education in the first place. As she said so perfectly, she loved being a teacher. She loved her students. She loved watching children low

058love, excuse me, grow and learn and discover their potential. In a profession where it could sometimes become difficult to maintain this enthusiasm years and years, Tony carried that passion with her every single day. It was evident in the way she spoke about her students, the way she prepared her lessons, and the way she approached each new school year with excitement, excellent pedigogy, and kindness. Those five words, I love being a teacher, may be the perfect summary of so of Tony's successful career. They speak not only to what she did, they speak to who she is. And I believe that person is one of many, I'm excuse me, I believe that passion is one of the many reasons why she's made such profound impact on generations of students and families at BIS. Tony, thank you for

059your friendship. Thank you for your dedication. Thank you for your laughter. Thank you for your countless contributions to the Valley Stream 24 community and our families. It has been an honor to work alongside you and to have served as your principal. You have enriched the lives of many people, including my own. As you retire, never forget how much you have loved and appreciated. Never forget the relationships you have built, the students you have inspired, and the colleagues that have become that have become part of your family forever. This is included in your legacy. Tonight we Tonight we also celebrate the people who have been part of Tony's journey. Her mother Judy shares tremendous pride as she watches her daughter conclude an extraordinary career in education and her father Donald is undoubtedly watching us from the

060best seats in the house tonight. The seats high above us all. I am certain he is smiling as he watches the remarkable woman his daughter has become and the incredible difference that she has made in the lives of many children. His example of a life dedicated to public service was certainly shared with you, Tony. Tony has a has other incredible accomplishments that extend far beyond the walls of the Brooklyn School in the Valley Stream 24 community. Together with her husband, Frank, she created a beautiful family and a life filled with love and purpose. Her son Ethan and our daughter Jesse have every reason to be proud of their mom. The compassion and kindness and determination and commitment that Tony has shared with thousands of students over the years are the very same qualities she shares

061with her family and students every day. And while Tony may be retiring from Valley Stream 24, I'm happy to report that her husband Frank and I have already made plans for the jet ski excursion on the Hudson River with the Herwig family. Pictures will follow today. Uh tonight, her sister Allison undoubtedly joins in this pride as well. Throughout life's journeys, our siblings have unique perspective as they witness both the quiet moments as well as the milestones. Allison has the privilege of watching Tony uh be the exceptional educator, wife, mother, colleague, sister, and friend that we celebrate tonight. With great honor, I stand before the board of education, vice president um Marcus, uh the members of the excuse me, Mr. Wilson, members of the board of education, our superintendent, Dr. Caracus, the entire Valley Stream 24

062family. when I say thank you Tony for sharing this chapter of your life. Congratulations on your retirement, your career legacy and a welldeserved retirement. Thank you. >> Thank you. Yeah, you got a speech. Yes. >> To say something. >> Okay. >> So, I was just told that I have to say something on TV microphone. So, you can probably hear me out there, right? >> Okay. Perfect. So, thank you very much. Thank you for 31 wonderful years. Um, thank you. You knew I had to throw that, right? So, uh, that's it. I just want to thank you all very much. It's It's hard. Um, have been crying and laughing. Um, but you'll all see why. And to those of you starting, it's going to fly by. So, enjoy every minute of it. Um, and that's it.

063I didn't really know I HAD MR. AONO. I never like following Scott, but Tony, congratulations. Good evening, everyone. Uh, it's both my honor and my privilege uh to speak today to celebrate a remarkable career of Margaret Utton and her 27 years of dedicated service to our school community. For the past 14 years, I have had the pleasure of serving as Margaret's building principal. During that time, I came to appreciate not only her exceptional abilities as a teacher, but also an extraordinary person that she is. Margaret has always been a compassionate, caring, and open-minded educator who places children at the center of every decision she makes. Kindergarten is often a child's first experience with the school. And for countless students and families, Margaret was the welcoming face that helped make that transition positive and memorable. Her

064classroom was a place and still is a place where children feel safe, valued, encouraged, and absolutely loved. She understood that teaching young children is about much more than letters, numbers, and academic skills. It's about nurturing confidence, curiosity, kindness, and a lifelong love of learning. Quite often you would see and hear Margaret sometimes when I would walk by I would see this. And when I first started, I often wonder like, what is she doing in there? And you see the kids doing this too. And it was always kiss your brain, right? and and that's the message that she sent kids. Uh and um it's a lasting one. Throughout my years working alongside Margaret, I often sought out her opinion on matters involving children, families, and education and life in general. Her insight was always thoughtful, balanced,

065and grounded in genuine care for others. Quite often, I seek her advice as my children started to grow. She possess she possesses a unique ability uh to see situations from multiple perspectives uh and always offering her wisdom. Margaret's impact extended far beyond her classroom walls as a PTA teacher delegate. She served as an important bridge between school and home, fostering relationships that strengthened our work tirelessly to ensure that the families felt connected, informed, and welcomed. Over the years, Margaret became much more than a teacher. She became a staple of our community, and you hear it when people see her or talk about her. Her presence brought comfort, stability, and positivity to everyone around her. She influenced generations of students, supported countless families, and mentored colleagues through her example of professionalism, kindness, and dedication. As Margaret

066begins this well-earned retirement, we know that her legacy will remain in the halls of the building in the hearts of the many lives she has touched. While we are excited for the adventures and opportunities and relaxations that lie ahead for her, there is no question she'll be greatly missed. While Margaret has devoted so much of herself to the children and families of the Robert W. Carbonero School, the center of her world has always been her own family. In 1984, yes, Danny, I'm going to put you to the test, right? She married her husband, Danny, beginning a partnership that has now spanned over more um more than four decades. Together they built a beautiful family, a life grounded in love, commitment, and unwavering support. Margaret and Danny raised two wonderful children. Their son Graham and his

067wife Laura have blessed the family with two grandchildren, Millie and Wit. Their daughter Kelsey and her husband Christian have added even more joy with their daughters, Violet and Oilia. Anyone who knows Margaret knows how proudly and lovingly she speaks of her family. They are always without question amongst her greatest accomplishment and greatest joy. The values that made Margaret such an extraordinary presence in her classroom, patience, kindness, compassion, wisdom, and endless capacity to nurture others did not begin at school. They were shaped by the love and guidance of her parents, William Stivitz, whose memory she continues to honor and mother Phyllis Stitz. Margaret, thank you for 27 years of service, your unwavering commitment to children, your partnership with families, your leadership among colleagues, your friendship to so many of us. And if everyone has earned the

068time, the gift of time, it is you. On behalf of the students, the families, the staff, the community members who have been fortunate enough to know and work with you, congratulations on a truly outstanding career. We wish you happiness, health, and fulfillment in your next chapter of life. Congratulations, Margaret. We love you, DEAR. I'm going to say thank 27 years. God bless you all. I'd like to invite up Mr. Delasio. Good evening to the board of education, Dr. Crocus, friends and families of Valley Stream 24. I have the priv privilege of speaking on behalf of two of our wonderful educators who will be retiring this year. I am beyond lucky that my path led me to this moment where I have the privilege of standing here and sharing a few words about an educator whose

069heart is bigger than this room. Mrs. Maria Evangelista, here we go. Maria. Although Maria has enjoyed a successful career in education, her heart and her greatest love has always been and always will be her family. Marie and I have had many conversations about instruction and our kindergarten program as a whole. And those conversations were always professional, student- centered, and filled with passion and care that you would expect from a seasoned educator. However, when she spoke about her three wonderful daughters and her amazing husband, who has fed William Albbuk's school a thousand times over, nothing but pure love radiated from her. That love and devotion she has for her own family clearly translated into her classroom. It showed in the way she not only taught her students but cared for them, nurtured them, and protected them.

070While Maria may not be the tallest person in the room, when it came to advocating for her students, she stood 10 feet tall. Maria, we will miss the laughs we shared. We will miss the tears we've shed. And yes, we'll miss the many times you notoriously tripped and fallen in the hallway and blamed someone else far too many times to count. We'll miss the fact that you could arrive at school at 8:10 wearing one pair of shoes and then by 9:00 a.m. she's wearing a different pair of shoes. It was her magic trick. Most of all, we'll miss your tenacity, your dedication, and your example of what it truly means to be an educator. Someone who puts every child first no matter what. Although small in stature, Maria's presence filled our hallways and touched the

071lives of everyone around her. Maria, to put it simply, we will miss you. On behalf of the entire William Buck School community, I wish you a retirement filled with love, laughter, and countless memories with the people who have always motivated you to be your best, your family. Congratulations on a very welldeserved retirement. We love you, Maria Evangelista. And for my next one, wonderful colleague, educator, amazing person, supportive, positive, optimistic. These are but a few words that describe Lette Lucifer, an educator whose career has spanned more than 30 years. Lette's positive outlook on life never ceased to amaze me. Whether it's taking on the daily demands of our profession or taking on the demands of just being an amazing mother to her wonderful son, let's Lette's energy never faltered. That same spirit is how Lette supported

072and educated the hundreds of students who had the privilege of being in her classroom. She approached each child with contagious positivity, immensed encouragement, and a genuine belief in their potential. No matter the challenge a student faced, Lzette was there. She understood that being a great educator meant more than teaching lessons and me building relationships, instilling confidence, and ensuring that every child felt valued, seen, supported, and capable. For over three decades, Lette has been a source of strength, kindness, and encouragement for her students, her colleagues, and the families of Valley Stream 24. Her ability to see the best in others, her superpower, and her and help them recognize it in themselves, is a gift that has left a lasting impression on us all. Lette, your positivity and compassion will deeply be missed by everyone at William

073Elbuk School and Valley Stream 24. The impact you have had last generations of students and colleagues. They will continue to resonate for years to come. On behalf of the entire William Albuck School community and Valley 24, thank you for your support of our children and the countless lives you have touched. We wish you nothing but happiness, good health, and many wonderful memories in your well-deserved retirement. And most of all, enjoy that new puppy of yours. Congratulations to Lzette Lucifer on her deserved, welldeserved retirement. a little bit. Not only I also It's just such a legacy and I'm really really carry along the way as well. Thank you so much and Hope to see you again. Thank you. The the individuals we honored are are truly master educators. Uh and we bid them farewell with such

074deep deep appreciation. This evening, we're also proud to recognize members of our staff who will be awarded tenure. Tenure represents an important milestone in an educator's career and reflects the commitment, professionalism, and contributions these individuals have made to our students and to our schools. To begin, I invite Dr. Komas back to the podium. It is my pleas uh pleasure and princip uh privilege. I'm also the principal to recognize and celebrate Miss Brooke Martins who was tenured in the Valley Stream 24 school district this evening. Brooke is an Brooke is an outstanding educator whose dedication and warmth and commitment to students are evident in all that she does since joining our district, she has made a meaningful impact not only in her classroom but throughout our school community. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she has served our community throughout the ENL after school enrichment

077program as a Spanish club teacher and through her willingness to support students during lunch duty and throughout the school day. We are happy to have Janet's greatest supporters here with us, her husband Francisco and her daughters Ana and her son William. Janet, we look forward to celebrating more successes with you in the future ahead. Congratulations and have a wonderful and bright career. Thank you, Janet. Now I invite back to the podium Mr. Delasio. >> Okay. Hey, good evening everyone. Once again, I have the honor of celebrating the tenure of a teacher who seamlessly blends exceptional musical talent with a natural gift for teaching children, Mrs. Joanna Milanise. During the time I've had the pleasure of working

078alongside Mrs. Milanise, I've witnessed her students flourish under her guidance. She does more than teach music. She creates a space where students are encouraged to express themselves through the musical arts. At this past spring con uh chorus concert, the emotion conveyed by her students was palpable. The pride they felt was undeniable. On that stage, they were not simply singing in a chorus. They were performing as musicians. You did that work. Whether serving on the event planning committee or or leading efforts such as Winter Wonderland, whenever we need to elevate the level of excitement and engagement, we turn to Mrs. Melanise. And she never hesitates and she never says no. This is who she is. A selfless educator who consistently goes above above and beyond to ensure that the students, staff, and families of William Albuk

079School and Valley Stream 24 receive her very best. She's an educator who never settles and leads her students who follow her with pride and enthusiasm. Mrs. Melanise, as you are joined by your wonderful family and girls, it's probably way past your bedtime. I want to express how extremely proud I am of you and the educator that you became. I am in awe of the way your students respond to your musical leadership and I am excited to see the heights we will reach with you as part of the Valley Street 2014. Congratulations on receiving ten this evening. I have one more honor to bestow this evening. Access and connection are essential to creating a school community where every student feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to succeed. Mrs. Vivian Ramirez has embraced this responsibility with exceptional care,

080dedication, ensuring that our English language learners feel a genuine sense of belonging. Like we say, we all belong at Buck. Through her support, she helps students take pride in their language, their culture, and their identity while fostering the confidence needed to thrive academically and socially. She celebrates the unique backgrounds of her students and honors their experiences with compassion, respect, and kindness, making a lasting impact on their lives each and every day. To put it simply again, you see them. Mrs. Ramirez's work exemplifies the core values of William Elbuk School and Valleyream 24. She is a passion. She is passionate about learning and inspires that same passion in her students. She recognizes the importance of celebrating diversity and culture, helping to create an environment where differences are embraced as strengths. Through her advocacy and genuine care

081for others, she helps make our school a place where all students can flourish and shine. Vivian, beyond your professional contributions, you you bring warmth and positivity that make William Elbuk School a better place for everyone. We are fortunate to have you and your wonderful family again very late boys very late as part of the William Albbuck School family in Valley 24. Your impact is felt every day and I look forward to seeing the countless ways you will continue to inspire and support our students for years to come. Congratulations to you on receiving tenure this evening. And lastly, uh it's my pleasure to introduce the newest members of our team. So, we've recognized uh three different groups at different uh steps of their career and um we are excited to welcome uh those that are new

082to the team. So, I'll invite the the five uh members newest members of our staff to join me up here for a brief introduction. Uh Mr. Colobby Nilson, Miss Paige Nunan, Miss Betty Ramdani, Miss Ashley Rodriguez, and Mr. Michael Thomas. One of our most important responsibilities is selecting educators who will work with our children each day. Through a rigorous process that included interviews, demonstration lessons, and reference checks, these candidates distinguish themselves in different ways. Miss Ashley Rodriguez stood out for her warmth, professionalism, and commitment to building meaningful relationships with students and families. As a bilingual educator, she brings an additional level of connection and support to the communities we serve. Miss Betty Ramdani brings more than a decade of outstanding classroom experience and was consistently de described by colleagues and supervisors as an instructional leader

083and mentor to others. Mr. Kobe Nelson impressed us with his ability to build immediate connections with students. During his demonstration lesson, kindergarten students were engaged, excited, and eager to learn from the moment he began teaching. Miss Paige Nunan demonstrated exceptional instructional expertise and literacy knowledge. One of her references described her as the kind of teacher who inspires children to grow up and become teachers themselves. And Mr. Michael Thomas stood out for his strong literacy background, his reflective approach to teaching, and his genuine passion for learning. References consistently described him as exceptionally bright, hardworking, and deeply committed to students. Together, these five educators bring a r a diverse range of experiences, talents, and perspectives to our schools. As we continue advancing our vision 2030 work, we are excited to welcome educators who will help us build

084engaging learning experiences, foster meaningful relationships, and prepare our students for the future. It's my pleasure to welcome Mr. Kobe Nilson, Miss Paige Nunan, Miss Betty Ramdani, Miss Ashley Rodriguez, and Mr. Michael Thomas. Uh if we can give one more round of applause for all our award recipients and retirees, tenure recipients and new teachers. Uh that concludes the superintendent's report tonight. >> At this time, I'd entertain a m motion to go back into executive session. >> Motion to go back into executive session with the superintendent to trustees and attorney for personnel and other legal matters. >> Second. Sec moved and seconded on the question. All in favor? >> I that concludes the meeting. We'll take a brief. Yes, we have cake and refreshments in the back, please. Or is it in the back? >> It's in

085the hallway. Um, thanks everyone for coming. Marcus, 10-minute break. 10 minute break. >> Yes.
