okay this time i'd like to entertain a motion and return to regular session please i'll move it sell flow okay all in favor anyone opposed motion carries this time i'd like everyone to stand for the pledge followed by a moment of silence or carol copy a long time teacher who recently passed away mr lens would you like to for which please stands one nation indivisible with liberty okay this time i'd like a motion to end a second to approve the board meeting agenda please i'll move it bill second second by brian all in favor anyone opposed motion carries okay this time we have the budget update presentation sure good evening and thank you so we do have a prepared uh presentation for you to be on the screen we also provide the hard copy to
the board so just to run through the overall goal it's to provide the board and by proxy if you will anyone viewing this presentation with an overview of where we are at this point in the budget development process to an extent the the process really doesn't begin or end right from year to year however we do have to uh you know go over our revenue our numbers as far as i'm sorry revenue versus expenses and where that landed us based on the work that mr lenz and his team have have done throughout the past year and then more specifically and more recently following last week's budget workshop so our goals um they've remained unchanged from year to year and in some some regards the the concept overall of being unchanged will be a sub theme
in this presentation i'm sure so uh going on to the next slide givens and variables um just want to start out and maybe dial in a little more our our business office is incredible uh mr lens and the team on the second floor of thompson street are exceptionally good at what they do and how they do it they are part of continuing to develop the vision for this school district and essential to making that vision a reality because at the end of it all if the funding isn't there then some of the programs and initiatives that we look to do don't come to fruition so it's always dangerous when you try to name everyone but nancy heather jen debbie angela karen jessica all just do an unbelievable job in supporting this they are a true
power team so since the closing of schools in march among all the other impacts of the pandemic to daily life from the perspective of schools i do want to point out that expenses changed dramatically so sometimes you'll hear that schools have paid less for some services but it's also important to note that in some instances that is true but also expenses that we never anticipated having were created as a result of this pandemic so what we'll do now is we'll you know we'll talk about some of those givens and variables throughout this presentation expenses that are known expenses that are expected based on what might be the case in september and expenses that we just simply are predicting so going on to the next slide uh some of the variables that that do exist and
this is something we explained last week are the state and federal funding that the school district and the school district such as ours that relies very heavily on it that right now firm numbers are currently unavailable so that remains a variable the unexpected expenses for the next school year and reopening of what that looks like that that's going to be ever-changing again we're doing our best best you know job in predicting that some of the expenses that we're incurring right now will benefit us regardless of how restricted they are next year i'll get into that a little more in my you know my admin report but those are some things that are unknown and left to best guess and it's also important to note that if you want to put a dollar amount to what
we are estimating that we spent on just the kovi copied related ppe and safety equipment it's over six hundred thousand dollars so that doesn't count uh the overtime and some of the other staffing implications which add up to again significant numbers uh you know in our expense side of the equation but that's just encoding related epa ppe and safety so next slide mr lens i'll give you these here sure so as mr rydell just discussed with regards to variables the first line actually with regards to state and federal aid as he just referenced really has a large variable in that and i know i've talked about this again at the workshop as well is 2.7 million dollars of that funding is something that depends on what the federal government gives to the state so our
state aid this year hinges very significantly on the federal aid that flows to the state and so you know those talks continue now at the senate level the house has moved a package to the senate so we still wait and see what really the results are of that and right now the last i heard there was discussion about 350 billion dollars going to states and that's really the money that we're we're watching significantly because that's what determines if that 2.7 million dollars flows to us as part of the state budget so if we just run through you know kind of quickly certainly these are the large variables as far as our revenue in that at state and federal aid we do have fund balance currently the allocation that we allocated for fund balance is really
uh you know the board talked about different numbers and this is that this is a starting place and it just starts us with kind of the the lowest number that we've talked about and we certainly can increase the number as we as we work through the budget process based on you know some of what we heard from the board at the workshop interest and tuition uh are down a little bit and certainly that's just a reflection of what's going on in the banking industry as well as uh montague uh they are no longer you know we're no longer in a perceived relationship with them and so that's where their tuition decreased the tax levy uh the number that's represented there actually represents a 0.97 uh change on the levy uh i will point this out
again but our tax levy limit for this year is actually 2.34 based on the formula that the state came out with several years ago now but this represents a 0.97 change and then uh pilots we have it had a couple small solar pilots come on as well as just based on our pilot agreements with some of our larger pilots that increases based on time as well as assessment so that's where you see that change of a little over a hundred thousand dollars so all told as it stands based on those changes our revenue is up uh just a little bit over three hundred thousand dollars so if we go to the next slide we can talk about the expenses so again these are kind of lumping some things together of course to come up with
some you know general numbers but as you can see instruction of course one of the most critical things that we do because without that you know not doing what we're supposed to do as an organization so uh 45 million dollars is our instructional costs or anticipated instructional costs for this coming year and really that represents salaries and then there's the benefits that go along with that as well as you know for the rest of our staff and benefits are up mainly because of our retirement costs actually our health insurance is almost flat because of the performance that ou health has seen for this past year our debt service is down slightly uh that is a planned change and in fact i'll talk about that a little bit in my admin report and then general support
represents our administration costs as well as some of the other general items such as electric heating different things are represented there and then transportation is just a three percent increase and that's a contractual increase in interference transfers is really transfers that come from the general fund in order to support the federal fund as well as the c fund and you can see those are unchanged but what's important is that the total is 76 million 452 000 and that represents about a 700 000 difference from revenues so we certainly will continue to talk about you know how we're going to close that gap or difference but this slide really just represents the past several years of what the community has supported as far as the tax levy increase as i just referenced previously our translated limit
is 2.34 and the prior numbers included a 0.97 uh increase again you can see over the last few years what those numbers have that so as i said at the beginning there are there is a sub theme of unchanged in our in our message this evening so the current programs that we currently have in place in our the budget for this school year those are remaining in the budget specifically in regards to after school and summer programming and really a lot of that can be attributed to the board of education over the past few years has expanded each of those and that's going to benefit us this school year because the this upcoming school year because there is a great need to provide ancillary and additional opportunities and services for our students particularly the realms
of special education and intervention services there's also a high likelihood that the need for credit recovery will also it's a good secondary level high school high school level will be a requirement so that is in this budget it's not an area that we are exploring to to see cuts in and as well as the athletics program we don't know exactly what things will look like next year when it comes to our athletic programming this year we did have a relatively successful and ambitious pre-season conditioning program of which i'm very proud of so that would also be afforded to us in the upcoming budget and it is important to maintain and continue to grow our arts program so that that's also included here so in short the expanding the school day expanded school year concepts that
we have been speaking about over the past few years um it still remains in here mr lowe suggested yeah and i was just going to point out that some of the summer programming that mr rydel just referenced actually some of that will be supported by rollover grant funds so we had planned on some expenses this year you know zero hour pe and different things that certainly haven't haven't occurred just because of what we're dealing with around covet so we're able to utilize some of that funding to support some of that that bolstering that mr rydel just referred to with that mr lex um took a little bit of my thunder on the next slide which is uh there is a need to not only maintain but there is a need to expand and that's where
where some of the expenses that i mentioned before this year were reduced some of those expenses were coming from grant funding uh such as our zero hour pe and some of our after school programs we're looking to roll that money over uh mr family owned worked very hard on the title grants although mrs pagano we're looking to uh you know further expand those programs specifically our plan right now is with the uh grades k-8 our special education and our english language learners so that that's where maintain is probably an understatement also technology with that we're looking to maintain those those applicable line items in the in the budget they're again we're in a fortunate spot because of the unfortunate spot we were previously in which was ensuring that we got to a true one-to-one ratio
of which we were relatively far away that was an ambitious uh distance to go i applaud the i.t department and really all the work that went into that but now we are a true one-to-one school district which is a device for every student as well as a device for every teacher should we get in a position where we have to go all remote again we can do that pivot if need be however there is a need you know technology continues to evolve and continues to have clickability in the instructional realm and that's really where we have to continue to bolster what we offer our students that includes some of the interactive classroom equipment that we have and some of the other instructional pieces that go along with that such as the ipv document cameras etc
also our devices are going back and forth to school they're at home they're getting damaged they're getting lost etc and so unfortunately that that's a that's a reality so student device replacements are in there and then continued improvement of our infrastructure which is not only our bandwidth and expanding what we can do but also protecting our equipment and our you know personal identifiable information and other other essential confidential items the one thing that board was very steadfast a few years ago was the supply list from the buildings and particularly at the elementary level and those line items also remain unchanged so also the expansion that we did for the middle school high school classroom supplies the next slide please curriculum money curricular mapping money is being shifted from some of our previous initiatives and also
some of that's also being rolled into some grant funding but we are going to continue with the k-12 character education and mental health curriculum mapping of which i'm extremely proud of and i really think it's it's essential for our students and the overall growth of our school district as well as continuing on with math um it's a multi-year project and that there's work to be done i'm also very proud that the work that was done this year and really a lot of work that mr pantaleon has done is uh working on diversity equity and inclusion curriculum writing because just like character education mental health if we have that as part of our k-12 continuum it ensures that that we're really offering our students with the education that truly makes a difference in their potential for
success following their k-12 experience again similarly same themed clubs extracurriculars nothing is being removed at the same time nothing is also being added to to this in this regard so those you know stipends that we added for things like odyssey the mind though those are maintained the coaching positions that the board added over the past few years those are also being maintained in this budget so i go through all this potentially it's redundant however it is important to know you know how we get to the numbers that we get to i just don't want any surprises down the road if uh you know before season and clubs and extracurriculars were not changed that's right that's where it is right now and that's how we got to the numbers that we got to so a few
of the difference makers include retirees from our teaching staff also additional difference makers include which positions actually get filled or which positions get eliminated in our in our programs and so that that becomes a difference maker the continued growth of our programs over the past few years will lend itself well into what we need to do in the upcoming school year as well as the chromebook purchases that i i spoke about a few moments ago so mr lenzo if you want to take this or i can so as mr len said in the expense column versus the revenue column there's a there's a gap or a difference of 780 000 so ultimately that's the gap that needs to be filled with the continued work um you know in the various line items to close that
gap if we are to stay at the 1.2 million allocation of fund balance and the 0.97 for the tax levy so any any shift up or down from that 700 000 would affect one or both of those uh essential pieces of the budget process so timeline uh so here we are tonight our board meeting budget update and then we do have workshops and presentations uh upcoming as well as the budget hearing and ultimately culminating with the budget vote on may 18th obviously in years past we would want to go out to the community as often as possible and do presentations at this point you know that's really i will keep that in the to be determined column we still would like to and we believe we can do those things safely and physically distanced and
really get out there and have that opportunity so we'll we'll continue to explore that option but we are committed to full transparency and also for communication so we will continue to do budget presentations at board meetings we will also have presentations posted to our website that will simulate what we would have presented and we had an opportunity to meet with the various groups that we've enjoyed meeting with in the past so you know again it's it'll be our attempt to communicate to the greatest extent possible all the contents of the budget our programming and so that our public can make the most informed decision possible and like i said a moment ago the the budget vote is scheduled for tuesday may 18th polls will be open from 7am to 9pm and we don't have uh
firm guidance on what some of those what the modality will be how it will compare to uh years prior to last year and how compares to last year's modality forecasting the balance but nonetheless once we have more information we'll continue to push that that information out but if you have questions regarding voting locations or really i've come to learn almost anything you can ask mrs lopez and her email addresses on this page of the presentation um if you have any questions or comments or again questions on anything that we can help with mr lens and myself fully encourage that feel free to email us or call us at district office i'll close with how i begin just really thanking the board as well as uh mr lens and the great team that he works with
for the work that goes into that was put into where we are right now and at that point we'll take any questions or comments that the board thank you okay administering reports mr lens did you have anything additional so i was just going to touch on the fact that we actually had a boundary funding some of you may recall this that you approved refunding bonds um actually back in november and they were callable at this at this stage so that occurred today so i do have confirmation that we will receive a savings in total for the eight years that remains in the bonds of about 275 000 so what that amounts to this year is actually just under 34 000 and so that will again occur next year and so on so the schedule changes
a bit but it is a positive change kind of just like you would refinancing a mortgage so it's great for us and that we are saving the taxpayer of the community some money and moving forward and i really appreciate bpd bernard donegan our financial advisor because they of course do a lot of work behind the scenes to make all of that happen and then i'll just again touch on the prescription coverage is going to change july 1 through ou health so individuals will be receiving new cards and the real positive for the individual is is that you will still of course have your mail order but you will be able to go to any pharmacy for some of those maintenance drugs which i know you couldn't do in the past so that that will help
out individuals but just so people are aware and that's my report for this evening thank you mr lens mr pantaleon this past saturday our administrative team took part in a diversity job fair created by the lower hudson council of school personnel administrators and our collective team met and screened over 60 candidates across the day and throughout the tri-state area to fill high-anticipated needs the day was a tremendous success and i want to thank our administrators for all their efforts and i'm very excited to have the wonderful candidates that we met and take part in future interviews and potentially join our learning community also along with that we recently received information that the biden administration has announced that it'll require all states administered tests required by federal law despite the pandemic however we'll be able to
potentially shorten tests delay them and or apply for waivers to state level uh betsy rose has requested an executive order to suspend appr this year so we will keep the board updated on any new changes that are associated with the testing on wednesday february 24th i was very excited to organize and take part in a demonstration for the loom interactive playground and the louvre is a state-of-the-art audio visual system designed for active environments and one thing that we're really striving for has really done an amazing job during the pandemic and before we planned to after is really focused on student engagement and by the hard work of our teachers specifically our physical education staff on a remote wednesday we brought in over 50 students to take part in this a really demonstration and it's uh
was wonderful uh that are really the collaboration between the building administrators and so we're planning to based on positive feedback to install the lou and then also ask and as mr lens is probably giving me a look right now we'll be using uh rollover monies from our title grants to pay for that so we're excited to have these in our learning communities keep our students active and be used across all curricular areas i also just wanted to reach out and thank both of our elementary buildings and teachers for taking part in read across america i myself was asked to do a video a reading and i chose the foot book by dr seuss for mrs paul cena mrs pulsinelli and her students it was great to share with her class and also my three-year-old daughter
lilly at home and so she asked for me to buy for her so i did do that so um and this is really a really sentiment of the buildings and what they do despite the pandemic to keep up with tradition so great event by all thank you thank you mr pantalia mr right now thank you and the lou is lu correct correct mr pamela so maine the board members would like to check that out go on their website it's uh just really fantastic addition to what we have here so uh i guess i'll start off by saying how awesome it is to have fall sports starting which is another thing to say on march 2nd but nonetheless it was it was really just it was great uh being up on the high school campus uh
yesterday with mr morata and we we just saw our student athletes our football players in the gym in parking lots and and so forth or soccer players out in another parking lot playing and it was i just saw a smile i saw a lot of smiles and on the coaches on the students and and mr morata and myself it was it was just great it was uh just some i know i said it and all call out but some semblance of normalcy and i'm just really appreciative of the board of education for supporting that as as you're aware we do have a survey that's out there we have a great response over 650 families thus far have responded it's important to note that over 300 of those responses have more than one child and some
of them have three or four children etc so when you do the math we're very pleased with the response it is open through tomorrow we will put communication out reminding those that have not completed it to do so but it's giving us very valuable information to finalize our plans in order to do this transition and that's that's a topic i wanted to speak about for just a few moments this evening because some may not be aware of of how we got to where we are now and they may be questioning why why march 8th are we starting this and why not february 8th or why not april et cetera so here here's the the summary of the story in a nutshell basically in july and followed into august as school districts were required to submit
their reopening plans of which you can find on our website all the schools in orange county met with the commissioner of health dr gellman at that meeting we all were aware of what the new york state guidelines were she explained what the county guidelines were which can be more restrictive than the state in that meeting it was explicitly communicated to all schools which is why all schools followed it is that the students must be six feet from each other in the classroom and wear a mask so the state guidance differs a little bit on the mask wearing but certainly that's that's a reasonable directive the six foot distance between each six feet of distance between each student that does limit what happens inside of the school and what your occupancy can be in a classroom
because space is something you just can't change we've been very creative to expand some spaces but that was a very limiting factor and it caused us to change some of our plans so [Music] that will be in consideration as the board is aware our school district's district has been advocating for some revisions and some loosening of the restrictions on the quarantine protocols as well as the need to go to a physician to get cleared if you were a contact etc and there was a public comment made as well as a posting on facebook from dr gelman the health commissioner that in summer substance the key point was that orange county does not have any rules other than the mask rule that's more restrictive than new york state said another way orange county follows new york
state with the exception of masks that's a key concept and a key phrase which really opened up the door for the continued advocacy of our school district so what did we do we contacted the department of health for orange county to seek guidance and clarification and to give confirmation that our students still need to be 60 because the state guideline says they have to be six feet or have a physical barrier that's an entirely different scenario and an entirely different number of students that you can have in your classroom while also keeping them as safe as possible we followed that up when we got no confirmation from the county with communication to the state department of health at which point the state confirmed that our interpretation which i don't really look at as an interpretation
because i look at it as a straight read the or statement is there it's six feet or a physical barrier so we then went back to the county and shared with them what the state had confirmed to us at which point the epidemiologists from orange county of which i'm extremely grateful for all the work that both both of them have done and i'll probably say that maybe even though i know they'll never ever hear this in a board meeting but aaron ray cascaretti and jackie lawler two epidemiologists at orange county department of health are amazing they've been amazing for this entire process and i did receive written communication last thursday as i shared out with the board that quote our interpretation was correct and that the state guidelines do say that and that we can
move forward with uh with our plan as written and we just you know have to submit it and follow the protocol with that we did uh meet with our teachers on thursday as well as our reopening committee on friday and that's what allowed us to present where we work with our planning process and that's what yielded how friday evening came about where we announced that we are moving forward with this so i'm extremely proud of the work of our administrators who are here this evening because they have made this you know possible because we collectively have been working on this for much longer than the past few days we once once that statement was made we had many of these things in in our original plan for september but once that statement was made by
dr gellman we recognized that this was this was the statement we were looking for that the direction we were looking for and mr lens mr fan leon worked incredibly hard on a lot of infrastructure we began purchasing those the student barriers the partitions that will go on the desk and those are clear trifold polycarbonate barriers and there is a supply chain you know concerned with those so i am very happy that we begin our ordering process immediately and we will have 2 400 of those partitions in our school district because we're prepared for whatever the future may bring while we know we won't have 2 400 students in next week or even at the end of this transition on you know in late march we do have approximately 2400 students in this school district and
our goal is to get all those students back in back in our classrooms and in our schools and um you know this really comes down to a that advocacy that i do appreciate the board through that whole process has supported and it is making a difference because now this is a reality so some some may say which i don't know why they would ask this is why are we beginning next week i don't personally see that as a valid question we're beginning it next week because we can because we've been building this plan for several weeks now and the building principles that are sitting back there have been very instrumental because each one of their buildings is different and they've been very instrumental in making it so that we do have not the confidence but
the certainty to do that um so this is is not being reckless it's not being broke it's with the safety of mind but knowing that we want our students to get the best education possible and then i'll also say we couldn't do this without the teachers because they've done an incredible job from the beginning we have an incredibly demanding model which is a fully synchronous model because we fundamentally believe that that is the best model to provide the best instruction of all students whether they're in person or remote that is a big ask for the teachers and they have a big response and i think that most or all in our district would agree that they've responded resoundingly with incredible effort incredible work to provide the best education and that that's going to continue it's
going to continue to be fully synchronous and that is one of the many reasons why the wednesday is still remaining in play we'll look at this following spring break we'll look at um you know any alteration to that but it's my belief at this point that the wednesdays are essential it's not for some of the reasons that maybe some some folks say a lot of that reason is we provide interventions we provide services we provide small groups but we also provide time away from screens we do have still you know a large percentage of students that will be remote and you know certainly much less than half of our students and that number is declining today but nonetheless wednesday served a giant purpose but also serves a purpose for collaboration among our teachers and sharing
best practices because that synchronous model having two audiences that you're instructing synchronously at the same time is a very difficult task and i will tell you i am awe of our teachers and i i'm hoping that they get the accolades from their students and their parents for what they're doing so i went into that a little further than i had um originally intended but nonetheless i wanted to share the background with with the board directly as opposed to some of the communications that we share electronically that that's the timeline that took place and we are excited for what the next steps are because like i said seeing our kids back in our fall sports it it gives you an energy and it gives you optimism seeing more and more of our students in our classrooms
i honestly can't wait i can't wait to be in the kindergarten classroom on march 8th so thank you uh something that uh miss rydell you know failed to say and i know he said a lot was that you know out of the hundreds of hours that he spent on his of his own personal time and not only advocating for our students but something as a real true leader that he not only wanted to see our students back but all the students of the county so he reached out and really fielded calls from superintendents from districts from ulster county to our own county and as really as the pioneer and really leading the county and bringing students back to four days it's really just selfish i want to just say commending was really proud to be
part of this team of and really part of this glorious community for just being a great leader thank you thanks pioneer is much much too strong but we have great collaboration orange county uh something the board should know that the superintendents in this county are unparalleled um and it it's it's what it's what you do if you know if you have a best practice to share everyone is doing it we're sharing where we are it's not a competition it's we're we're all in this for all the same reason which is all of our students obviously we're in charge of running our districts but if uh when we began on our path of what we were advocating to get here um we received that uh like like mr pamela was saying we received that on thursday
afternoon we spent a few minutes happy about it and celebrating um but then it was this this is now time to close this up and how do we get there uh part of that was immediately communicating out with some of some of our colleagues that we've been sharing our progress back and forth but then we also had a county-wide superintendent's meeting on friday which was very fortunate because it gave an opportunity for all the schools to be on there and i shared our progress as well as what our next steps would be um and yeah i would not have said what nick just said but i will tell you it is it is pretty great to see um we'll always i'll take all the phone calls and and they'll always take our phone calls and
we appreciate that that's what collaboration truly is but it's awesome to see the other school districts websites i gotta tell you it was it's really great to see over the past two days um the number of schools that based on the shared collaboration are are they're not bringing their students in on that little little piece um just it's really awesome but it's a two-way street they share with us as much as we share with them consent agenda items these items include minutes from the february 9th 2021 meeting cpse meeting minutes annual review for 2122 hold on three two twenty one cse meeting minutes from two three two four two ten two eleven and two twelve twenty one and cse meeting minutes annual review for 2122 on 23 21 24 25 28 and 2 10 21
at this time i'd like a motion and a second to approve the consent agenda items as listed i'll move it second by brian all in favor anyone opposed motion carries item number six personnel employment items these items include leave of absence resignation instructional position number 190 special education teacher resignation vacancy number 2239 modified spring track coach resignation support staff substitute cleaner appointment vacancy number 2239 co-curricular middle school art club appointment vacancy number 2273 coaching assistant varsity boys and girls spring track appointment support staff vacancy number position number 526 lms plumbing appointment support staff probationary to permanent status position number 574 cleaner i'll entertain a motion a second to approve these items as listed uh number seven a is action items first reading of policies number three four two zero seven two one zero eight four
one one eight four five zero and eight four seven zero i'll entertain a motion to bring this item to the floor i'll move it second right click it brian second okay so there i i attended the policy committee meeting on tuesday march 2nd there wasn't tuesday night i mean it was i don't know what day was that week there are five parts these are the minutes for today there's five policies and these are the ones that we discussed number three four two zero was on nondiscrimination and anti-harassment in the district this was from the january policy pulse from erie one boces it was revised in light of changes to state and federal laws primarily related to title ix there are a couple of new sections including the overview particulars on its scope and application description
of exactly what constitutes discrimination and harassment places where this would apply including virtually and sections on confidentiality notification and training we retained the sections on finding that harassment did not occur and privacy rights from our existing policy in keeping with our practice and other policies we gave the titles rather than the names of the designated civil rights compliance officers as well as an address and phone number to reach them policy number seven two one zero on student evaluation promotion and placement mr pantalon have requested that we look at revising this policy we obtained policies from other districts to review and took some of their good ports it was decided to have listed specific criteria that would go into the decision-making process on student retention as well as making sure there was consultation with the superintendent
mr pantaleon rewarded this policy based on committee input number eight four one one on emergency school closings extraordinary condition danger student attendance this was discussed under our positive review ours was from 2007 and was dated it is not a required policy and was written by poor jervis and not erie one we decided we wanted to retain it and made some corrections such as not listing all legal holidays and not repeating specific educational law for the obtaining of waivers when a district is unable to meet the required number of school days the length of the school day was corrected to the now specific number of hours required and we specify the timing of the use of makeup vacation days relative to the secondary and primary grade levels policy number 8450 on home tutoring or hometown instruction
this too was from policy review we changed the term physician to licensed healthcare provider and clarified the provision of any alternative instruction policy number 8470 on home schooling this was also from policy review we decided to revamp the second paragraph into a list of the statements which pertain to our home school students we deleted the paragraph on page two relative to the 2008 nine school year we added intramurals to the statement on extracurricular activities or his slash her designee wherever the superintendent was mentioned and that there is no requirement that special education services be provided in a student's home were there any questions specific to any of those changes okay we'll put them on the next agenda for the second review and i need them let's see where do i know okay all in favor
of approving the first reading anyone opposed motion carries okay the next item on the agenda is board of education vacancies um we need to have a discussion about what we want to do here whether we want to fill the positions that currently exist which i think we said no to right i did reach out to legal regarding what we could do because there was some discussion about reduction in the number of people because actual positions on the board for the purpose of the public who may be watching or anyone else who's watching [Music] regardless of what the board decides to do there are five seats up for election at the next election um if the board decides to make reductions we need to present a petition from 500 registered voters in the school district and
place it on the um ballot in may if we want to change something going forward and then should that be adopted then terms of um office would change to a three it would be a different rotation than it currently is so um that being said we need to have discussion to decide how to understand with this signature what the current law says unless something changes yeah i i think we've gone through this discussion sorry um current law is what is written down before this pandemic hit because it's still that and i think we're gonna find out okay i will reach out on email right now i know because i don't know what the school i think you're reaching out for that i know us in the town is is less one point five percent that
we need signatures for so i think it's something that we need to find out how many stages just if it was 500 this is still good with 500 okay thank you anyone else you want to just deal with that first get an answer from legal on that and then proceed or isn't everybody feeling that they do want to go to i think everybody [Music] okay so we'll get an opinion from legal then on the number of signatures we need so just just for clarification i think there may be two different conversations going on here the discussion that we had previously was about what the board wanted to do following the two resignations and did you want to continue on pending the outcome of the election with the current number because we spoke about the different
options that the board has yes the discussion for this evening is specific to is there any change in the total number of this board for composition purposes so is it something that the board which is currently at nine despite the fact that there are seven based on your previous decision is there any discussion that you want to take that or have that would bring it down to seven or any other different number that's that's what i think is the essential piece for this evening we can go from seven we can go to seven or five or we can stay at nine i think i think this seven man award puts us in uh the category most schools are our sides i know what you know we've had nine members for years we had a much
larger student population years ago and i see most schools as debbie uh gave us a a list of the schools in our district and the size of the student population and uh seven-man boards were probably pretty much the norm for a student for students of our number and thank you kristen for compiling that to do this is followed correctly and and excuse me while you're at it i think our president has been talking to legal about what the how much signatures you also need to right i was told that there is something floating out there with this with uh the number of signatures for petitions they're working on something but nothing has changed so we have to go on 100 signatures for right it's currently 100 signatures unless something changes as a result of the
pandemic which would be nice since we're really not supposed to you're right there's legislation out there that would reduce it to 50 for small city school districts however it's legislation [Music] okay so at this time next items are board committee reports um does anybody have any other than what i gave from policy linda do you have anything from oxford or nismo actually i have a meeting tomorrow night with the oxford okay all right all right um health and wellness was there anything recently on that one no why would you have anything on i was on microphone [Music] he's bad you're not going on vacation next year so anyway no i'm very impressed with the meeting we had with um health and wellness the other day and um just getting our schools the way they are
and i just i want to thank everybody and everybody who joined the meeting it was very nice very good good crew out there and thank you mr riedel our superintendent for doing all this thank you you're welcome okay board member comments judy brian bill no i'm fine thank you i'm texting mike ready i just want to say thank you to all of the parents and guardians for getting those surveys done and asking all of the rest please do it as fast as you can all that information will help us to know where we need to be to be able to open up successfully and keep all our children and faculty and everybody that is in our educational community safe and i'm really excited about the fact that we are going to be going back to
four days a week and i i thank our administrators um here all of our principals and our teachers everybody that's put in so much effort to be able to get back to this point and i know our kids are all excited about it so thank you all and um we'll talk again next week for two weeks okay and i would just like to say i know mr rydell doesn't like to be the center of attention but that's too bad because i'm talking so um he echoed his sentiments about everyone's participation and working together as a team here we've got administrators in the audience i thank each and every one of you for your diligence we couldn't do it without his leadership and um it's just amazing to watch how things come together in this district
i've been around a long time i grew up here um i also listened to the choose committee meeting the other day and what a fantastic bunch of people we gotta work for us we really are lucky from clerical staff to cleaning staff to teachers to principals to administrators i can't say how thankful i am that we are where we are today and i can't wait to see the kids back in school so um thanks again mr riddle i will i'm speaking i think on behalf of the board i don't think i'm overstepping my boundaries but um thanks so much for all you do for our kids okay so at this time aubry dates to remember march 1st was yesterday fall sports began march 9th high school ptsa meeting 6 p.m it's a virtual meeting march
