014now i believe and our goal has always been to strengthen the employment skills recognized by this certification that's critical in providing a pipeline of skilled high school graduates for today's workforce we collectively are working to encourage students to meet the benchmarks that will assist them in their college or career goals to receive the governor's work ethic certification you are required to have a cumulative gpa of 2.0 or higher and meet all graduation requirements an attendance rate of 98 or higher and have four or fewer sign in and sign outs or times tardy to school one or fewer disciplinary referrals during the eligible school year complete a minimum of six hours of community service or volunteerism during the eligible school year and be in good standing for earning the governor's work ethic certification to qualify for
015the scholarship secondly the united fund is supported by many volunteers throughout the year and they are essential to the success of our work in the community this is also true for many of our non-profit community partners that receive funding from the united fund they could not survive without volunteers a volunteer is defined as a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task it's given of your time to add value to someone or something else everyone should consider giving other time to a worthy project or organization it's also good for the soul as well this year decatur county united fund scholarship winner was asked to complete a very special project a local farmer who had been diagnosed with cancer wanted a metal piece of art as a shrine for the
016shredding of his ashes the project took about 20 hours to complete and required welding and some metal work as well the farmer was pleased with it and thought it was perfect this is a perfect and a great example of giving of your time and talent the decatur county united fund board of directors and staff selected waylon case as our 500 scholarship recipient for the completion of the governor's work ethics certification and outstanding volunteer project congratulations waylon if you'd like to come up please thank you congratulations good morning i'm jody alexandra alexander this is sandra gabbard mixing up our names here for this award i'm speaking on behalf of the community action coalition and the greensburg prevention group the cac and gpg work to reduce alcohol tobacco and drug use in our community especially among our
