001[Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] thank you [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] good evening everybody welcome to greensburg high school for this exciting ihsaa high school basketball event you're joining us here live from greensburg community high school with an eiac match-up between the visiting connersville spartans and your own greensburg pirates i'm jason simpson joined tonight by josh lee josh i think we're in for a game here with the pirates and spartans it's going to be a tale of two different styles yeah you know greensburg's always trying to get it up and down under stacey meyer connorsville they've been you know under carrie brown for what 12 13 years now and and he's a slow it down grind it kind of guy kind of style and and we've seen it over
002the years that we've played you know sometimes you're gonna get uh games that are in the 60s which is pretty high in this in this matchup and other times you're going to get games in the 30s so it'll be interesting to see who controls that pace well before we get into tonight's game as you said the pirates are normally led by head coach stacey meyer stacy's in his 15th year here at greensburg with a 272 and 78 record his 20th year overall with a career record of 330 and 134 but tonight the pirates will be led by coach scott holdsworth as coach meyer is away dealing with the family health issue and we just want coach meyer and his family to know that all of our thoughts and prayers here at g-tv are with them
003during this trying time but josh as we get back to basketball the pirates come in with a five-on-one record the spartans come in at six and two and in the eiac conorsville has actually already played two games and they sit at two-and-oh atop the standings and tonight will actually be the pirates first conference game so this is going to go a long way i would say at the beginning of the season these two teams were tabbed as the two favorites and so not only is this for bragging rights of two sectional opponents this could really even though this will be the third game for connersville and only the first for the pirates this could decide the conference title tonight and and you know it it's kind of seemed to be that way and maybe not
004every year with conorsville and greensburg and you're going to sprinkle in batesville here and there even though the last couple years they've been a little down but it typically has been greensburg connorsville and again those contrasting styles make it interesting you know you get a cup somebody with two quick fouls lane you know pick up a couple early fouls conorsville gets up seven or eight points and they kind of take the air out of the basketball they're just really disciplined uh in what they do under coach brown so it's important for our pirates to get off to a really good start in the conference and uh and hopefully we can go one-and-oh well like we said conorsville comes in with a six and two record they got to that point they started out the season
005that with they started the season oh and one they lost at delta 43-32 then they won three games in a row defeating rushville 60-39 taking down winchester 46-44 in overtime and then picking up their second eiac victory by taking down the knights of south dearborn 69-38 they got their second loss of the season on december 19th when they traveled to richmond losing that contest to richmond 49-39 they then moved on to their next three games getting victories and no's they won at greenfield central 48-31 then they hosted both union county and mccutcheon winning those two games 61-29 and 50-28 respectfully that's how the team itself got to where it is josh why don't you tell us a little about a little bit about some of the players that we can expect to stand out tonight
006for the spartans you know it looks like to me just looking at some of their stats obviously they're a balanced team they're averaging 50 points a game or right around 50 points a game they have five guys that average in between five points and nine points and nobody over ten so again that's going to be again controlling that pace uh they've got billups a number 12 a junior guard he's averaging nine points a game they got a senior guard in graham who's averaging eight points a game and then again they've got a couple big guys that are around that six seven point mark uh mark on the year so anybody in this offense when they're only scoring 50 points a game can hurt you somebody breaks out for 12 14 points that could be the
007difference in the game so a really balanced approach from the spartans like it is year in and year out then our pirates come into tonight with a 5-1 record pirates actually started the season winning their first four games in a row first game wasn't played until december 5th traveled to trinity lutheran and came away with an 89-51 victory then they traveled to county rival south decatur winning 81-73 and then made the trip past south decatur down to jennings county where they defeated the panthers 73-63 pirates wrapped up bragging rights in the county on december 22nd when north decatur came to town besting the chargers 85-41 the pirates lone loss of the season came at home on december 29th against fishers the pirates fell that night 59-41 and then last week the day after new year's
008pirates traveled to columbus to take on the olympians of columbus east and they came away with a very nice 72-54 victory over a very solid columbus east team on their own home floor now we all know that lane sparks is the star the straw that stirs the drink of the pirates tell us a little bit about the statistics of the entire pirate roster yeah and you know you've been watching the games if you're watching us on gtv obviously you follow the pirates so they're primarily going to play five to six guys uh you know lane is leading the way with uh 30 points a game and i think the most impressive thing about that statistic josh he's not only averaging 30.2 points per game but you want to talk about efficiency he's doing it by
009shooting 70 percent from the field so to say that he is affecting the game in a very positive way might be the understatement of the century and and you know it's been a long long time since i've seen somebody that can just get anything that they want around the rim and and he's got a motor and a second jump that first jump yes he can jump off the ground but that second jump allows him to get extra chances by getting offensive rebounds and with that uh how high he can jump he can rise up and hit those 15 footers which you've seen for four years he doesn't miss many of those obviously with a 70 free throw shooting but he's not the only one i mean we have threats all around the court you know
010you have stanley and walters that can get stuff done inside a cummer as uh you know following drew his brother and just a really good shooter uh and dyer you know he's averaging seven points a game kai dyer so a really balanced approach outside of lane and you have addison coming in as a freshman that just he does a lot of really good things a lot gets a lot of hustle points so he's averaging four points a game so obviously we're led with lane but there's other guys that can hurt you as well oh for sure and i think what what i find so interesting about this is is lane comes in averaging 30 a game colin comes in averaging 16 but then you look at those two it's not just about scoring for them
011they're also two of our three leading rebounds colin comes in averaging 5.8 so basically six rebounds a game and lane comes in averaging 5.2 so lane's at 30 points 5.2 rebounds 5.3 assists and only turns the ball over about two and a half times a game so you know you you have that the magical assist the turnover ratio is above where you wanted as a coach you know they always say two to one and you know he he's exactly where you want him to be uh colin averaging almost three assists a game so those guys not only get it done on the offensive end for themselves with the ball in their hands but they're setting up their teammates they're doing a great job on the glass and just they just do a great job of
012leading this team and you know i haven't been able to come to a lot of games we're in a different time you know and i used to be able to come to every home game that they had and even some away games but what i've noticed when watching it on gtv or even on periscope as long as we can take care of the basketball we are really tough to beat and that's going to be of high importance against connersville because again if you start turning it over right away they're going to slow it down they're going to take the air out of the basketball and you're going to find yourself down 12 to 2 quickly and they're not even playing quick just turning it over so they're really sound fundamental fundamentally it's just going to
013be a really tough tough matchup if we turn the ball over like we have in a couple games this year and what we have to watch too is it's not only their tempo on offense but coach brown prides himself on defense and coaches around the state go to him for different drills to run and different things that he does in his scheme because he's so well known for the defense that his teams play and so not only do we have to be solid defensively because we know that connorsville is going to work for what they want but we also have to be patient ourselves offensively and not make those the the you know the behind-the-back passes or that flashy pass you know you've got to be solid and set up cuts and make deep cuts

016as sparks brings it across the timeline 1-4 high set here to begin dyer swings over to walters over to the right wing to dyer hit sparks at the top of key to dyer back in the corner up top to walters good patience being shown so far by the pirates like we talked about in the pregame sparks look to drive right cut off hits walters in the corner who's going to drive pulls up from about 12. no good kept alive by stanley but controlled by martin of the spartans that was still a really good possession you know they took 40 seconds off the clock got a pretty good look at it so you know pirates keep doing that good things are going to happen phillips brings it across hits graham back out to billups phillips swings
017to the corner to spark sparks for three no good kai dyer controls a rebound he's gonna race it up the floor looks to attack [Applause] dyer will be called for a charge and that's something that you definitely that goes to that those defensive principles of of coach i just had a brain coach brown thank you coach carrie brown good lord you don't normally do that on on live uh broadcast you're not supposed to do that but i digress but those are the fundamentals that coach brown has has taught and so that's something else that goes into the patience of your offense you have to know that they're going to be back there waiting and you know if you're going to jump to pass they are going to be waiting for that you got to stay
018on your feet to make passes as usual good patience being shown here by the spartans phillips controls on the left wing he swings outside to graham graham over to the right wing to sparks swung back over to graham two sparks high post controlled now by martin phillips surveys things he's gonna hit martin at the high post pirate faithful wanting to travel on that play not sure that i disagree i think he got away with two travels on that play you know it's gonna it's really gonna you have to determine greensburg they're gonna have to sit here and play good defensive possessions for more than 40 seconds at times and hopefully you get them to turn it over like that and that's exactly what you want if you can just stay stay solid and stay patient
019defensively you know most times you talk about that offensively but stay patient defensively you might get a turnover like that now as sparks will control for the pirates dyer takes it as we're going to see a set here going to run a little rocket action to lane sparks sparks is going to attack off that left wing kicks to walters in the corner quick catch and shoot three for dyer that's no good rebound controlled there by martin of the spartans that was good ball movement there and dyer got a good look at it he just got to knock that down phillips looking to enter it for the spartans kicks over to myers to graham martin tries to lob inside tipped away and stolen by sparks sparks pulls up from 15 in and out no good rebound
020controlled by billups who's going to bring it across for the spartans doesn't look to attack graham with a deep three his three-point attempt is no good lane controls the rebound he's looking to push the issue in transition don't know if it got tipped or what but lane controlled it laid it in 4-2 we're not going to complain because that was one for the good guys and i don't think that on that previous possession that's probably not a shot that coach brown wants graham to take a shot from just inside the volleyball line gives lane a an easy chance to go down there and get a little transition basket phillips into the corner to graham graham back out over to martin martin swings right to sparks sparks on the attack to graham myers out top swings
021to sparks back to myers over to phillips billups in the corner to graham graham's three-point attempt is good four minutes to go here in the first quarter pirates trail now three to two as sparks hits up the right wing to comer back to sparks over to the left to dyer sparks attacks from the right wing and one basket goes we're going to get an and one here that foul will be credited to number 32 of conorsville that's braxton myers his first teams first lane's free throw attempt is up and good 3 50 to go now pirates take the lead five to three so if you noticed on that drive they got colin cummer on one side and lane sparks going downhill with his right hand sparks for connorsville couldn't help off of colin cummer and
022just got lane in an easy one-on-one and he's going to convert that every single time corner three attempt by graham is good his second in a row conorsville retakes a lead six to five 320 to go here in the first half sparks in the corner to walters tipped away stolen by connorsville graham in for two connersville now leads eight to five sparks brings it across the timeline for the pirates into the corner to dyer fake three in attack by kai no good comer attacks off the left wing going to be a foul on the play it's going to be called on the floor good recognition there by colin to see that the left wing even though the ball had just been swung from there everything cleared out and he had that entire side of the
023floor to attack so he attacked one on one did a great job drawing that foul we're gonna have our first sub of the game now 44 gage brown of the spartans comes in kai looking things over dyer enters to walters out top back to sparks lane attacks his layup attempt is no good controlled there by myers of conorsville phillips brings it up for the spartans phillips surveys looks like now they're going to be intent on running graham off as many baseline screens as they can they found the hot hand so what are they going to do they're going to get their shooter open as a fellow shooter i do like that style of offense walters does a good job of on the ball defense there keeping myers out of the lane over to graham on
024the bait left baseline corner surveys things here we go he's going to back it back out they'll reset their offense phillips at the top gonna run graham off a couple more baseline screens dyer doing a nice job staying right on his shirt tail high post a little high low entry back out to graham graham's three-point attempt no good rebound there by dakota walters cummer brings it across skips across to sparks back across to dyer sparks from about 18. it's no good just a little short there by lane that's a shot he can normally hit love to see him take it phillips on the attack he gets inside that shot's going to be blocked away by lane sparks you know jason that previous uh possession you'd one thing you don't want when you're trying to chase
025graham is to guard for about a minute and a half and then just lose him off a simple inner and then replace back to himself that looks like a shot that he's going to be knocking down consistently they got caught ball watching the ball got entered into the post and it looked like we had a good good solid post defense there by walters but kai just got caught watching the ball a little bit and you have to just anytime you're guarding a shooter like that for for conorsville you've got to be aware all of the time more of where your man is i know it kind of goes against the norm where you say you always want to be aware of the ball and the man but if you're guarding the other team's best shooter
026and the guy they seem to be setting up you want to be sure that you don't lose track of him as graham misses a little little 10-footer there but conorsville controls the offensive rebound and in typical conorsville fashion here we talk patience they have an 8-5 lead with just under 40 seconds to go they're going to be satisfied here to get the last shot because they also control the possession at the end of the quarter and and you know to get that 8-5 lead graham got that layup that's what nice job there are pressuring by sparks he comes away with the steal his euro step is no good keeps it alive it's going to be out of bounds on sparks but one thing i was getting to is you have to stay away from live
027ball turnovers there are difference between dead ball turnover which that wasn't from lane but it went out of bounds made them inbound the basketball if you're going to give connorsville live ball turnover layups and they build that lead to 8 10 12 to 5. that's when they're really going to take the air out of the basketball 15 seconds to go here phillips controls for the spartans who have an 8-5 lead over our pirates a little 1-4 low action going to run a high ball screen for billups walters switches out on him three-point attempt no good that's the end of the first quarter there with the score connorsville eight pirates five josh just like we expected coming in very slow tempo and actually really good patience on both ends by both teams and and you know
028it's a testament i think to greensburg's patients because we're not i'm not saying we're not the most patient team but we don't play the most patient style of offense shots aren't falling but we're not letting taking shots not falling come back down on defense and giving up open looks yes graham does have all eight points he does have two open looks here that he's knocked down but we're still playing 45-50 seconds of really really good defense we're getting good looks that we consistently hit if we continue to do that we're gonna start knocking some of those down and when you get connersville in trouble is when you get that lead up to six eight points and make them hurry that's not something that they excel at that's exactly right and you know you said that
029graham has all eight points actually we should say that the score is gram eight sparks five and the pirates and spartans are tied at zero um and i think you know a lot of times it's not that the pirates are impatient i don't think it's that because they are very willing to run good offense and work for great shots but they know they're at their best when they can pick up the pace in transition and that can't happen in theory if if conorsville is running 45 50 seconds a clock each time you feel like that next possession is so valuable you almost throttle back yourself because you're fearful of turning the basketball over and that's where they can wear on you because they run 45 50 seconds off a clock and get a bucket then
030you go down and miss a quick one they run another 45 seconds off the clock you've just played two or two minutes of defense and 10 seconds of offense nice job there brendan stanley doing a great job of battling in the post he is able to draw a charge on martin martin got that chicken wing out there pushed off and that was out there where not even the guys in stripes could miss it and you know connorsville is trying to get that high-low action with their two big guys stanley and walters have done a great job battling inside and not giving them easy position walter's out top he's going to kick back to right wing to cummer comer surveys he's going to drive into lane nice attack there by colin cummer his first two of
031the game that makes the score eight to seven pirates still trailed by one but great patience and then another great attack there by cummer it was just a really good hesitation move he kind of lawled his defender to sleep taking one dribble and retreating and then attacking and scoring at the rim really good hesitation move phillips steps into a three his three-point attempt is no good but offensive rebounded on the play there first time into the game now by 42 james williams his rebound attempt is blocked out of bounds by brendan stanley connorsville will take it out of bounds under their own basket stolen on the play by sparks tipped away from behind turned over right back to the spartans you could hear not only the bench but the entire connersville crowd yelling at martin

034or anything that was a guy jumping into lane lane going through i can't even describe how bad that was jason coach holdsworth is a better man than i because he stayed very calm and subdued on the sideline he must be channeling some inner zen power that he's found nice high low look there by connorsville graham hits williams who hits his layup and then is fouled on the play there by walters he will go to the free throw line for the and one and try to give the spartans a four point lead here as they extend their lead to 10 to seven looking to make it 11-7 the best thing about gtv i can be the biggest homer in the uh in the world and i have to say those last two calls were just unquestionably
035bad just i mean williams completes the old-fashioned three-point play conorsville with the lead now 11-7 cummer attacks off the right wing kicks out top to dire over to walters to dyer swings left to comer colin with a nice attack that somehow is a foul which it was but yet the last one was called on the pirates i'm i'm very curious about this but i digress we need to move on that foul is going to be called on williams dyer will look to trigger it in for the pirates he enters over the top to cummer over to the wing to dyer dyer's three is up in and out no good kept alive on the play conorsville is going to come away with it i mean that was all the way in and out there's not much
036you can do if you're kai on that one that was a that was a good look and he'll knock those down yeah those are shots that he needs to take those are good looks on our offense kai's a good shooter you want him shooting those looks over to graham for the spartans on the wing over to bodwell up top he swings right to spark sparks out top the bodwell back to graham on the left wing sparks for three his three-point attempt is no good dyer controls the rebound for the pirates he's going to race it up the floor to sparks sparks looking to attack backs it back out to walters walters to dyer over to walters again he attacks lane has it on the left baseline swings out top to stanley over to dyer good

038could be a grinded out game and we have a grand total of 18 points between the two teams it's not been bad offense it's been good defense on both sides here phillips comes up top for the spartans showing their trademark patience tipped away and stolen there tipped away by sparks stolen by cummer cummer's going to attack another one we're going to put this as 1a as the worst charge i have seen called in high school basketball this year at no time does it say in the rules that a defensive player can be back pedaling and it's a charge again cummer did not lower his shoulder he beat his man to that spot his guy was he was guarding the guarding him just fell down i can't even talk these calls are so bad if i
039was sitting across the way from where i'm at right now i might be ejected yeah like you said thank goodness that this has greensburg in the name of the station because we are allowed to be homers but i don't even know if a non-homer would say those were good calls but back to basketball action here we can complain all night that's not going to make for an interesting broadcast conorsville controls has it he's going to attack the middle he kicks over to the left baseline that's number 30. caleb sparks from the short corner spartans extend their lead 13-7 as sparks looks to attack inside to stanley he's going to be fouled on the play that foul is going to be called on the floor pirates will control underneath 2 18 to go pirates trail 13-7
040and i know we only have seven points but we are getting good looks at the rim we're getting good open shots shots that we consistently hit um you know we just have to keep working for three his three-point attempt is no good rebound controlled there by sparks of the spartans as phillips brings it across for connersville over to graham on the right wing kicks it over to sparks of connorsville good job by laying there reading that back screen i i really like this action though the the patience but also this back screen action and the baseline runner that connorsville is is running now that just can't happen simple diagonal screen from out of bounds pirates are caught unaware they now trail 15 to 7 with 140 to go in the first half lane from about
041six feet in and out seems to be a lid on the basket right now pirates still trail 15 to 7 130 to go in the first half phillips controls he swings over to the left now back up top to graham over on the left wing to billups phillips is going to drive the left baseline kicks back out top controlled on the left wing there by martin now to myers back out top to phillips over to myers meyers looking in he's trying to feed it inside to martin kicks to the corner good extra pass there three second call gonna be made here again really good defense uh by greensburg and and you know they're not letting like you said the lid on the basket affect what they're doing on this end they have given up a

044five point deficit and eight point deficit at halftime plus we get the ball coming out to start the second half i think we're hopefully getting some easy layups we are staying patient defensively we're not gambling trying to make our own offense so they're doing really good things we're even getting really good looks that we consistently hit so you know i know coach holdsworth is going to say keep doing what you're doing stay solid defensively make them earn everything they get offensively and we get a couple baskets here go up four six eight points make them rush uh hopefully that lead goes up to 10 12. and i know it's it's kind of cliche a lot of coaches say you know the first three to four minutes of the second half are huge but especially in
045a game like this where it's played at such a slow pace you can take control of the game on your first three or four possessions as crazy as that sounds you know the pirates can can really tip this thing on its head or or find themselves in a deficit is going to be tough to come out of just in the first three or four minutes here yeah there's an obviously score line there's a big difference between 22 to 10 and and 15 to 15 but that's what you have to avoid that's what you have to avoid is able to avoid a turnover there is it's kicked into walters walters gets to the rim up and scores dakota walters for two that brings the pirates back to within 15 to 12. 7 30 to go here
046in the third quarter just started the second half got it kind of out of a scramble there but great job by dakota he put his chin on the rim and decided this is going to be my show on this possession fellas you just jump on go for the ride graham controls for the spartans over to billups standing on the pirate head out in front of his own bench going to bring it back towards the top crossover inside nice find nice find there by phillips he hits martin for two 17 to 12 now spartans lead your pirates walters with a nice curl he passes across the lane to stanley stanley's two is up and good nice assist there by dakota walters to brendan believe that's brendan's first two points of the game 17-14 now pirates still

049i've noticed in the first two and a half minutes is you're always going to get an aggressive mentality from lane sparks but you've had walters dyer and cummer all make plays in the first two and a half minutes of the second half and what's been nice about it they've all run into the help that connersville is always going to have and they've made that extra pass they found that skip across the floor found open shooters who were down and ready to shoot and good things have happened early here for the pirates yeah stanley hit that corner three but that all happened because colin cummer got in the paint everything that we've gotten this half has been because we've gotten the basketball into the paint which breaks down every defense it doesn't matter what defense you're

052far pirates have looked much better offensively to start now got to clean some things up defensively because you don't want to keep trading baskets with the spartans and and you know it's it has started by getting into the lane and kicking it out to shooters or getting stuff around the rim this put back that stanley got fouled on uh but like you're right you know as solid as the defense was the first 16 minutes they're getting what they want connorsville on the other end now so you clean that up a little bit you're talking about motion it's hard to get kids to slow down on motion you know you don't want an interchange you want a screen and it's okay to arrive late and be slow that's what you want out of that and kids

055maybe with your team that you haven't scored much in the first half you get some baskets down here and you kind of let up a little bit defensively well what happens is now that pace starts to pick up in your mind and because now you're starting to get get the feel-good juices flowing on the offensive end you want to get back down there sooner and get the job done forgetting that you've got to put the work end on both ends of the floor yeah it seemed to me that they were grinding and they knew stuff wasn't happening in the first half so they had to play really good defense but the last couple possessions it has picked up sparks looking to attack off the top he's going to get into the lane no good oh
056this is never good when you get stripes together the official under the basket wants to call a foul on connorsville which is the right call whereas the official out top of course makes the wrong call going to call the foul on sparks of greensburg not only did he get hit going into the lane you've got to protect the shooter that didn't happen i just as phillips controls here for connersville dribbles across to the left wing connors phil really being patient here and looking to get it inside you can see that's definitely a point of emphasis here in that second half high-low look inside foul is going to be called on 32 brendan stanley even though 44 of conorsville definitely had the arm bar you cannot extend that arm to gain an advantage while you've got

064called on 32 brendan stanley martin's going to go to the line to try to complete the old-fashioned three-point play try to extend this lead now conorsville leads 25-22 as martin will try to get it to a four-point lead for the spartans addison barnes pettit making his first seeing his first action of the night like you said in the pregame josh addison's been a freshman who's been called on here early in their season and he has a certain role and has really bought into that role and does a great job filling it doesn't try to do anything that's not his skill set just goes with the flow of the game and does what he can to be a positive influence on the on the team itself yeah he's going to play hard he's going to screen
065he's going to try to get hustle points which is about the exact opposite of what he did you know growing up he's always been a really good shooter a really good scorer but i do like how he's bought into that role pirates are gonna go for the last shot here now 12 seconds to go cummer gets it on the right left wing he attacks it's no good foul will be called on the play and you can see now to the players defense when the whistle blows they don't know what to expect because it hasn't been consistently called all night so now you've got kids who are guessing how they're supposed to play because there's been no precedent set by the guys who are supposed to control the game is that one of those things where

067now pirates trail 26 23. josh that that quarter in comparison to the first half was one that i would say was rugged yeah that was physical um and but it what was the 13 to 11 and it looked like at times 1980s nba where they were scoring 140 points a game because uh how slow the first half was but things are getting more physical they're gonna get even more physical you really have to keep your emotions in check i mean as physical and as aggressive as lane plays at times he can let that kind of take over if he's not getting it and things aren't following his way and they really haven't tonight but so far he's kept his emotions in check he really needs to do that last these last eight minutes because they're

076extend any sort of pressure in the half court connorsville just picks it apart they find the back cut they'll drive and attack your pressure and we don't rotate on the back side they find a guy in the middle of the lane or on the back side and they're getting easy looks off of it so pirates have to be very careful in what pressure that they apply here and conorsville they're not going to take any bad shots they haven't all night they don't under carrie brown typically take bad shots so you're going to have to get up into them you're going to have to force them out of their comfort zone of just kind of passing and cutting and standing so you got to get them in an uncomfortable situation and you got to finish it
