what level is my kid? Becky, you probably remember that you will pulled up power school and it say your child is a 3.2. They don't talk about that it's a scale score of 458. That doesn't mean anything in our kit, our teacher language. Um, so we normally talk about LED growth. We talk about it as the proficiency level. Something else to really that we try to focus on and that's part of our goal setting with with our language learners is having them exit out of the language um program. And you learned in the quiz that we took earlier that language development can take five to seven years. Um we really set a goal for oursel for them to exit in five years. And the reasoning behind that is because that test changes at sixth grade

and if I don't if we don't get them out at fifth grade, they're really have it's hard to get them out before until they go to nth grade. Um so we work really hard at developing and trying to get them out before they um to exit the program before fifth grade or at their at the latest of fifth grade. In 2022 and 2023, there was only one way for students to exit out of the WEDA, out of uh language services, and that was to get a 5.0 or higher on the WEDA assessment. So, that's why you only see one bar for 2022 and one bar for 2023. I do want to talk about 2023. That was the year that we had um in grades three, four, and five, our teachers did a program called Finish

Line. And that was also the last year that our students weren't that they didn't make the switch over to the different uh elementary model to the middle school model. So, our results that year were phenomenal. Um but we have a plan to get back there. Um, and it looks like it's not as good when you go to 2425, but that's because our exits then get split into two categories. So, in 2023, we had one category, 5.0 or higher. In 2024, the IDOE said, "Hey, we're going to offer you another way for our students to exit." So, we had students that exited with the 5.0 or higher. And then we had something called an early exit criteria. And that is a rubric that if for example um in third grade if they passed I read they've

gotten a certain score on iLearn they have a certain grade point average then we can exit them out. Um at the other schools it's if they have a grade if they're iLearn they pass iLearn English language arts they have a 2.5 or higher GPA. Um, and then we give them a they call it an an extra assessment. So, we give them either another reading or another speaking test or another listening test. If they pass that, then they can exit out. So, that's why you see two columns and starting in 2024. In 2024, we had our kids that exited with the 5.0. And then we had the additional what is that or 64 students that exited via the early exit rubric. Fantastic. Then we move up to 2025 and our results came in. I'm like, Michelle,

they're terrible. Our results are terrible. They're I I was panicking. These are awful results. What did we do wrong? I couldn't figure it out. And then it occurred to us. These kids that we exited out on the early rubric the year before would have been those kids that would have exited out on the 5.0 rubric moving forward. So, we should anticipate to see a little fewer kids exit out at the 5.0. I know because 64 of them exited out the year before. So hopefully it'll start leveling out now that we do have the two criteria and it'll be an easier way to do a comparison. So any questions on exits? Know that was a lot. All right, the last big slide that I gave you um for data is I just wanted you to have

a visual of what it looks like um for proficiency level. So 1.0 to 1.9 being our lowest proficiency level up to our highest proficiency level, which would be our 5.0 or 6 5.0 to 6.0 by grade level. And and and what I what's encouraging is when you watch this, you're actually seeing language learning happen. You're seeing this natural progression of where our lowest levels are, those kindergarten and first grade are 1.0's. And then as we go up the scale, those kindergarten, first grade, and second grade pies start shifting. We get fewer on the kindergarten and first. We're getting bigger sections of our second, third, and fourth. Um, and then you see here that big push of those 5.0's to 6.0's of where we're wanting them out. So, honestly, our language trend, it is going in

the direction that we want it to. So, where do we go from here? Oh, this is just real quick. Um, we had 1,556 students participate in WEDA. 63% had an overall growth. And then I talked to you a little bit about the scale score growth where we're comparing an apple to an apple. 79% of our students had a scale score growth. And then 121 students exited either with a 5.0 or via the rubric this year. So, where are we going looking ahead? Um, curriculum wise, we're so excited. Um well, first off, staffing update. Felinga Jackson is moving from our um TK teacher to an EL coach position, and she is going to become have some special projects that she's working on. One of which is she's going to become um alongside our new EL teacher

at Loganport Intermediate School. So, we're so excited to have Natalie Damer move into that position. Felinka is going to help coach her up um get her um just moving in the right direction. Other projects Blink is going to be working on is we have um Dr. Kavasos. It's Dr. Kavasos is a project through the Indiana Department of Education and we advocated really hard. We had two buildings picked to be able to participate in this science of reading for ELLs. And Brandy and I hopped on a Google meet with her and pled our case and we got our other two elementaryaries plus our intermediate school to be able to be a part of this program. So, we're going to have some real intense professional development next year for our EL program, and we just are so

excited about that on how to implement some progress monitoring and really digging into that data. Um, curriculum wise, we also, again, looking at those test scores, we know where our gaps are, right? We know where we need that support, and that is 5678. And so, we're real intentional. Next year we have for our 56 students um as an additional curriculum for them to participate in. And then at the 78 building we're adding linguistics to our English classes. And I think doc and you probably have heard a little bit about the linguistics and well Emily was here and talked about word flight and all of that. That's all going to be part of that 78 programming. Alongside of that we have some professional development where uh Dr. deal. Myself and Lindy are going to be working

with the junior high and the intermediate school on some professional development on differentiation and deep dives into that. We also have quarterly next year we're having quarterly alignment meetings with our EL teachers. This summer we've done some curriculum mapping and that was something that has come out is that they would really benefit from meeting quarterly together and saying where are we at with our curriculum? And finally, we have our next six teachers joining our EL cohort. That's uh we are partnered with IUK for that. So, that's where we're going next year. It's going to be a good year. Any questions? I tried to keep it to three minutes, Michelle. I didn't make it. I talked really fast. Jimmy does words, not numbers. Good job. So, do we have I know years ago we had problems

where kids would come in the seventh or eighth grade speaking no English and then you know when you say stuff about you need five years to do that. Are are we getting more where kids are coming in at kindergarten and so they get the whole time or or is it still kind of hit and miss? So if you look at that slide that has the pi circle that first pie circle that 1.0 0 to 1.9. The majority of that circle are going to be your new students that are coming. Um, sometimes you have students that go into their second year and their 1.0's, but it it rarely they norm at least get to a low two. So that pi circle there kind of gives you the distribution of where are our new students arriving at.

And if you look um is it that one? Yeah. the the the ones and the twos. Ninth grade and 11th grade seems to be the other two years where we are getting more newcomers than other grade levels. And you can kind of see that with where they fall. Interesting enough, a lot of our students that are coming in at the high school as 11th graders, they're not testing in as ones because they're coming with that they're coming with an a kelp language in their home lang in their L1, right? So they have that academic language in their home language and they they do relatively well um with their English just coming in using what they have um in their background knowledge. Well, if I remember correctly, if I had a student who had a weed

score, I could click on that and it g it broke it down into the reading, listening, speaking, and writing. So as a teacher, I can take a look. I might have a student who seems like he said he might speak English real well and then if I look at their scores I might realize that they may not really understand what they're hearing or they may not be able to write it. And so for the teachers this score was really important because you could click on these scores in the in the computer and take a look at where the students are individually. And something that's been added since you were in the classroom is this all all the grade levels K through 12 our classroom teachers including our high school teachers are an active participant in

creating those individualized learning plans. So during impact time at the high school, your you would meet with your impact class and you would talk about here's how you did on WEDA this last year. Here's how you did this year. Here's what you what what would what would you like to focus on for next year? So all of our teachers are having that conversation with their class with their students, which is not only great for the student, but it's also been great for the teachers. And every now and then P school will trip up and they won't have access to that what you're talking about. And I love getting emails from teachers saying, "Hey, I'm trying to get into ILP and I can't get in." I'm like, "Yes, that means they're in there and they're looking."

So, it's it's a good problem to have when sometimes we have those issues. So, if students come in in the 11th grade and then they graduate, I mean, where do they go? Where do they go for help after us? For language help? Well, we have the adult education school. So, even like if they graduate from us and they still need language development, they have the adult education school. And then also, so really cool, I had a family contact me. Um Susie Walmsley put this family in contact with me and said that their nephew was coming from Kansas and he was graduating from high school, but he needed more English. The student wants to go to high wants to go to college, but he just needs more English. So, the family came in two or three

times. I met with them and then we ended up working with IvyTech. IvyTech has a language class where he can enroll in some classes and now that student is going to join their summer cohort for language classes, hopefully join their fall cohort and getting some of his um you know his basic level classes so that he can then go to a college um in the following year. So there our community is great honestly with the different options and opportunities that they that have to support our language learners. Anything? Okay. Thank you. You're welcome. Have a great night. All right. Next item on our agenda is the board is going to hold the additional appropriation hearing on the pro proposed bond proceeds. We have had multiple public hearings in the past on this. Um so there

will be as in in the past an opportunity for the public to make comments about the additional appropriations of the bond proceeds. Uh the notice of this additional appropriation hearing was published as legally required. We'll now open the public hearing. We ask anyone to speak will state their name and address and limit your comments to the proposed additional appropriation of bond proceeds. Keep any comments to three minutes and avoid keep uh being repetitive if possible. Okay. Uh is anyone interested in speaking? All right. Consistency. Uh thank you to all that have participated this hearing. We will now close the hearing. and reopen the regular meeting. Uh, can I have a motion and a second to adopt the additional appropriation resolution? Make a motion to approve. Is there a second? All right. Any further discussion? All

those in favor signify by sign of I. I. All those opposed, same sign. The motion passes. Can I have a motion and a second to adopt the final bond resolution? I'll make a motion. Is there a second? Second. All right. Any further discussion? All those in favor signify by a sign of I. I. All those opposed, same sign. The motion passes. Okie dokie. Now we move on. Uh Okay. On the action items. Um, okay. Uh, first action items consideration. No, it's the same thing. Oh, here we are. Number six. I'm back. I'm back. I got I found six. All right. On the action items, do six. The public hearer and excitement just Yeah, I just I was so hoping for some activity there that's going to I can read ahead then. All right. Action item

six on the agenda. Uh consideration recommendation to approve change of location to the memor memorandum of understanding regarding re reunification. This will be the academy of the Lport Community School Corporation to the River of Life Christian Church. Motion to approve. Is there a second? Second. Any further discussion? All right. All those in favor signify by sign of I. I. All those opposed, same sign. The motion passes. Next is the consideration of recommendation to update policy number 7450. Do I have a motion to accept that? I'll make a motion. Is there a second? I'll second. Any further discussion? Just for clarification, we're changing monetary numbers from 10,000 to 5,000. Yep. Okay. Any further discussion? All those in favor signify by sign of I. I. All those opposed same sign. The motion passes. Moving on to the

first readings. Uh first first reading first first reading is considerate recommendation to approve the student parent handbooks for the school year of 2025 2026. Is there a motion to accept? Oh, I'm sorry. This is the first reading. Never mind. Take that back. I knew JD had the stack there. So, she's three off. Are there any questions for JD at this time? I love it. Huh? Going once. Going once. Yeah. JD, can you have some questions about the elementary handbook for me? But I don't want to put Mrs. Nicholson through that. So, can we take that weed test thing again? I was interested. You're like 0 for four on that for four. Thank you. All right, moving right along. The next the next item in our uh first readings is the consideration of recommendation to approve

the elementary teacher handbook. Any comments about that? Questions? These are both available. These are both available in the office as usual. JD, I did I did notice we were going from like 263 pages down to 118. Is that policy? I mean that's that's not just verbiage. That's that's that's changing things. Are we consolidating? Yeah. You want me to come up here or can I just talk for Yeah, if you're going to speak up. I'm happy to speak on behalf of all the elementaryaries. Um when we when we talk about the teacher handbook, it literally needed a good update. And so there were many changes to policies and truthfully that was the majority of where you're seeing a lot of the page numbers go away, which I am okay with because that's a lot to edit.

But that was just the update that it needed. I'm happy to give specifics if you'd like. Oh jeez. I could tell you how many hours were spent working on it and formatting. Hopefully it looks nice. The teacher one really it did. It was behind and it needed a lot of updates. Um but really the student parent handbook it was just changing dates. Um, we added in some IDE verbiage about retention with the third grade policies, but really that's it. And the anonymous reporting system, I think, was added to from Mrs. Hes. Um, and now it's fire code prevention was updated. That's really the bulk of it. That's all you're going to do for me. There's no Come on. I wanted a hard question. Don't talk to me. Okay. I I'll defer to JD. Yeah. Don't

don't phone a friend. No, don't. All right. So, now moving to department comments. Mr. Correct. Couple of items for your benefit. Uh, junior high project continues. Students out of the building for the summer. Uh, the crews have increased from the contractors. So, uh, which we would expect and appreciate. Mr. Storm certainly seen a kind of a transformation here and I think he's excited to see the the new counseling area which is uh being framed up currently and coming into shape looking really nice. So um he gave up some space in his own office to help make us make this a probably a better overall solution for that administration area right there. So looking forward to seeing that when once we kick it off next school year. Uh we're seeing duct work installed in the gymnasium.

So uh as we all know that that will bring some comfort to the gym. Mr. Storm's appreciative of that. I'm quite certain as are spectators. But u project goes well. Um Terzo started this morning. So that's about a three-week process on that floor in the cafeteria. So look forward when it's complete. Much like LS, it's the same sort of layout, color scheme, and whatnot. Um, that's it for the junior high. As far as next meeting, we've got uh I would have brought it this meeting, but it kind of fell off the radar, but we're going to bring to you a recommendation for a couple adjustments at Male. You might remember that from last month. So, we'll bring those to you next month as a recommendation for some improvements. Okay. With the legislative session behind us,

we're just continuing to to build our 2026 budget uh as 2025 continues to fly on by, but um we're working on that over the summer as we learn more about the different areas and some of the costs that u we learn from the legislative session that we'll have to consider. as well as health insurance. Next month will be uh we'll have that renewal at the trust level. So that'll help bring some more information and better estimates. Uh lastly, we've got uh certainly custodial and maintenance teams are are prepping the buildings for next school year already. So doing their part. Transportation serving summer school and prepping for school bus inspection for the state police. That'll be later this summer. Outside of questions from you, that's my report for tonight. Questions, comments? Is the junior high to

be done before students come back? We might have one section that uh currently is on the schedule for for August. That'll be the maker space area. We've worked with Mr. Storm on that. We saw that coming fairly maybe like a month or so ago. Uh there was some equipment there that's got some long lead times and uh so that section of the project uh we were comfortable uh moving that to into the August time frame. So we we'll have that area but outside of that we're on schedule to be ready to go for school. They were up there working Saturday when I was walking. Yeah. They've added additional staffing and then they've been willing to work some Saturdays where needed. Uh TCS was there. Yeah. Any questions, comments? All right. Thank you very much. Technology

report. I believe Mr. F's not here unless you're going to give a report. Sure. Big opportunity. Way down to the to say I didn't ask. All right. Next then is the curriculum report. Mrs. Rosie and Dr. Deal. Um so we've started working with curriculum teams um that began last week that continues this week updating curriculum maps um mapping out our new reading curriculum um in K to6 updating assessments etc. So that will continue for the next couple weeks and then um some of that will happen um later in July as well um as we're able to you know work through some of our programs. Um and then the other thing is um we have our registered apprenticeship through IUK. So um we're wrapping up I guess you would say sort of the first cycle of

that grant. So what that will do is um that will cover tuition for 10 of our paraprofessionals. We have about 16 right now who are taking course courses at IUK toward becoming a teacher. Um so we will get reimbursed with this round of grant money for what we paid in spring out of title 2. So, that money will go back into into title two, which is great because then we can use that for other things. And then we will actually apply again next month and that um cycle will cover next school year. It will cover um 10 of our paras and their coursework at IUK and then the rest will cover out of title two. But that that is really going to help take a lot of weight off title two so we can use

that for other items. questions, comments? No. Dr. Deal. All right. So, from secondary land, um, graduated senior Ashant Curry was able to compete at state for the high jump, and she finished the day with her personal best, uh, doing a jump, clearing a 5'4. And she's going to continue track and field at Trine University next year. So, that's exciting. Also wanted to give congratulations to coach Abby Lundy and the boys golfers for winning the sectional championship uh at Dykeman last Friday and then they are going to be going to regionals this Thursday at Sandy Pines Golf Course. And then just another shout out and thank you from the LHS administration and staff and students for um a great graduation and for acknowledging Matt's contribution to his tenure um throughout the throughout his high school. uh

principal ship and then with the junior high contractors are busy and we have been doing curriculum meetings as well. We've had two sessions with our English language arts team and we have another one that's going to be coming in July with a focus on linguistics adding linguistics to the curriculum. And then we're also meeting with math with math two days next month and we are meeting with the PCC staff tomorrow that is preparing for college and careers. That is part of one of the updates of the new graduation path that's required. And so next year we're going to be doing PCC at the junior high and also the high school for those incoming nth graders who have yet to have it. So we're going to be mapping that out. That's it. questions, comments? I do

not. I do not. Okay. Thank you. All right. Moving on to comments. Mrs. Starky, I would just say um on this Friday, we'll be halfway through summer school already. That's crazy. Insane. Um and then I I just want to piggyback off of Tammy did a great job sharing the information today, but you know that test that we testing window. So that's it's a good four to six weeks of our people's time. So that's February. Then it's I read in March and I learn in in April. And so that second semester is it's insane. And then at the high school you have AP and all of that kind of stuff. those mandatory tests. If you think about a third grade kid or a second grade kid who has to take WEDA and then take I read

and then take I learn language arts and I learn math and what if they have to retake we uh re retake pull I read again. It's in it's a it's an insane amount of testing for an eight and nine year old kid. It's ludicrous. But anyway, nobody's here to hear that but all of you who've heard it before. So thank you But I am going to I I was talking to Tammy and Brandy the other day about this. I I am going to send my two my two cents into the state to to say like what's the point of giving I learn language arts to third graders when they already have to take I read. So if you could at least take that away from them. I understand math but take a piece away because

it's it's it's it's ridiculous. So really there's not a lot of new teaching that happens in the second semester because of all the testing. So hopefully they find out they find someday something that's works better. But I'm not holding my breath. Um other than that, everybody's in the buildings cleaning and making things all polished up. Landis is at full boore up there. It's full um between beginner garden and summer school. So things are going well and I think the kids will take I read again after the following week. So we're pretty optimistic of of things that are going there. I think the summer feeding program is going very well. I talked to um Josh about that this morning. So we've got um Landis and the high schooler sites and then Columbia Elementary um is a

site. So I think that's it. First day of school August six. Wow. Any questions or comments, superintendent? No. All right. Moving on to our final opportunity for public comments. These can be anything that are on the agenda or off the agenda. You can also you could also put something in here if you want. All right. I'm just keep give me a chance. I like to talk a lot. You had to come here. supposed to pick on JD tonight, not this Mil description above my pay level. All right. Uh, next one. Board member comments. Mrs. Bird. Um, I just thought graduation was very nice. I I really appreciated the two ladies that read the names. Um, I thought they did a great job. And you know, if I was a parent who didn't speak well and

I would be afraid that my child's name wouldn't be read correctly and they just they nailed it. It was very nice and it kept it moving. Um so great great job. I just you know what she said the graduation. Also, the WEDA, I I I appreciate your presentation and and as a teacher, I like I said, as a former teacher, I remember when that first came out and we took that test and it meant nothing to me other than more kid time kids out of the classroom. And then as we started to learn what that was all about, it was really, really helpful. Really, really helpful. It's worth the time. Mr. H. I thought JD's presentation tonight was the best he's ever really Thank you. Appreciate that. Mrs. Eson, you did a great job, too.

And Tammy, nice job as well. But JD's was off the charts. We're taking notes. Um, we were able to go to to redevelopment commission and get more money approved for the career centers. Um I think it was close to 60,000 for a new greenhouse which will help the a pathway and the biology department. So this month we're getting I'm going to you haven't seen it yet but it'll be a horizontal band saw wherever the hell that is. Um we're going to we're going to like Tyson's work this way. We're going to request that for the welding department and machine trades. So, we're projecting a couple hundred thousand this year if all goes right. So, thank you. Yeah, we're able to help those casts with their egg department, too. We had a greenhouse also. So, it's

the year of greenhouse, big greenhouse year. That's graduation went well. There was some uh crowd heckling stuff that you is out of our control. I want a great operation. people that had a role did great, but there was some pockets of problems at graduation. I don't know what to do about that. I just looked at as pockets of pride. That's very nice. Unless you're sitting right there. Unless you're sitting. Unless they're sitting behind you're Brad, do you want to speak to this topic? Have anything? I'm doing it on the side. I tried to speak for Yeah. Anything else? I appreciate that. All right. Uh, I agree. Graduation was was uh went off well. I I uh appreciate the Ferris tribute. They've given us quite a bit of press and even some press to Mr. Jones.

Some special press there. And I think that uh didn't want it. Yeah. Yeah. I think Matt didn't want it. and but I but I do think that uh Josh has been is uh uh he's very heavy into school stuff which makes the Ferris Jimmy worth reading. So that's there. I thought I also mention that Mr. Hess is retiring from uh his business career and if anybody wants to from 11 to 2 at our store down here in Eastgate Plaza there'll be hot dogs with hamburgers on Friday to celebrate Mil's leaving. So, anybody wants to come by? The real The real party comes on Monday after I'm not invited to that, but all day. That's all. That's when they bring out the steaks and do all day thing instead of the hot dogs and the hamburger.

Thank you. So, we appreciate him there and he'll have more time now for the school board. We appreciate that. another committee. We're looking for any kind of project for him. So, anybody, you know, keeps you in the loop on that stuff. Okay, I think that's all we've got. Time for signatures. We are adjourned. [Music] Yeah, he is. That's what I heard. Forsake no mind.
