001to the repu for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all first thing on the agenda this evening is recognition which we love Mrs starky I am going to start with Olivia Gibson for this was the first year for um girls wrestling to be a sanctioned ihsaa Sport and Olivia was a state finalist actually ended up placing fifth in the state um very first year so we are so proud of her and wanted to recognize her here tonight come on up oh no wait sorry you're not that's not you come up yeah her dad not Dad they had a middle school wrestling all righty thank you thank you you want to say anything uh thank you guys for on the then I am going to ask Mrs Nicholson to
002come up up and introduce to you the fair viiew Applebee's teacher of the month yes so um Holly Miller is our Fair viiew um Applebee's teacher of the month and I just Katrina and I were talking um about this and we just really can't think of a more passionate um servant leader on our staff and so we are super excited we're going to highlight her and her programming and the things that she brings to Fairview a little bit later in our presentation but she truthfully is just somebody who cares um so much for our students and um she goes above and beyond for them so it was an easy decision so come on funny how things were oh yeah yeah yeah it is congratulations think we're going to take a picture we're going to make
003you famous as if you did enough things today didn't my eyes open I'm looking and I want to thank you oh and Tammy I'm because they know they know the story yep got some chairs now the three fastest people the room all right our first opportunity public comments at this time the public comments be made on anything that's on the agenda this evening you want to come to the podium and state your name and address going going gone all right next is on the agenda is our consent agenda and that this evening includes am minutes to January 13th 2025 executive session minutes of the January 13 2024 organizational school board meeting minutes to the January 13 2025 Board of Finance meeting uh minutes of the January 13 202 regular school board meeting minutes of the
004January 23rd 2025 executive session minutes of the January 24th 2025 special board meeting Personnel recommendations field trip requests donation requests Treasures report for December claims and the 2024 yearend budget trans first do I have a motion to accept all of this I'll make a motion is there a second second any further discussion all those in favor signify by sign of I I all those opposed same sign the motion passes all right next we get into some presentations we first have the youth Summit presentation with Mrs Karen combes you you have anything further I would just say this is a conversation that we sat down this summer um I think Mr Miller you were there and then Karen and myself maybe Andy Nichols and sat down with um some folks from kowas and uh from Lafayette
005and they had shared with us um the youth Summit that they had done over there and so we were very intrigued by this and I was like okay like let's work on this and plan and then Karen says I think we can pull it off yet this year and I'm like pull Okay so we have we did and so's gonna share some information with you what it is and and what went on it was a great great start yes I am using canva I'm getting out of my comfort zone here [Music] so the big purple okay so connecting um are you Summit we hosted this like Mrs starky said they came over the summer I think it was July talked to us about it and the four things I've there was tons of information so
006we we narrowed it down to kind of our best takeaways if you have questions feel free to chime in and ask first we're going to talk about the purpose of the summit the Gathering the data and the questions we ask and what the students thought of it student evaluation results and then our top takeaways so the purpose I think all of the research says um just what I have up here National and state data suggests that you struggle with depression anxiety stress and substance abuse um an estimated one in three children grade 7 through 12 um report experience pers persistent sadness hopelessness in Indiana one and seven have made a plan to die by Suicide which is staggering to me and and that in my career the amount that's changed it is so challenging to
007to wrap your head around that um so we decided to spend some intentional time speaking with our students of Logansport High School to learn more about how they're feeling about these specific issues so how did We Gather the data we met on November 14th the students were selected by counselor selected um we tried to keep it in check with our kind of data or our statistics across the board and we gathered approximately 45 LHS students from all backgrounds we ask them questions and discuss thoughts on key topics as far as mental health substance abuse stress and coping skills these are the questions that we asked and I'll kind of go through those um a little bit later because they they come up just what impact do you think social media is having on youth today
008what are the biggest stressors you face today what substances do you find um most high risk and what do you define as high risk what issues do you think youth are dealing with that schools need to be paying more attention to what school staff can do to help um and then we just did a quick tally question of raise your hand if you can identify one adult in the one adult school system or not that you feel connected to actually it was at school I apologize um what mental health issues do you feel like impact youth the most and then we ask them to describe that so if they said depression we wanted to know how they would describe it if they said anxiety how would you describe it um barriers that stop youth from
009asking for help for themselves and then we also ask about barriers what gets in the way of you asking for a for a friend to get help so you have a friend you know they're struggling why not reach out and ask someone for help a trusted adult um what do you like about living in C County and what do you think could be better um and then what resources do you know about in the community and then how you cope with stress in a good way and how you might cope with stress in a bad way so these were this was and I'm kind of jumping a little bit I apologize but the these are the student evaluation results um and this was kind of what they felt about the youth Summit in general and
010I thought it might just be easiest to show you a graph so um I learned new things from other students in today's event most agreed um I enjoyed participating in the event most agreed with that um I'm inspired to make a change from today's event mostly fives and fours some threes there and then I would be willing to participate in another event like this again most would um and then I believe positive change will come from my responses so they really want to know that we're hearing them that we're taking um this information and listening to them so a lot felt they were five and fours here but we did have some threes choos and ones just thinking maybe it wouldn't and then I there's quite a few I'm not going to go over all
011these but the biggest thing that I felt like the students got was they're all from different backgrounds and they didn't know each other very well they might know of them but they sat down and they really found that they're all struggling with the same issues right whether you're our all of our different populations diverse populations um or you're you're just a really good academic student right they all kind of struggle with the same things so I thought that was really interesting and I thought it was nice they were like there was no one else in my group I even knew and I was so nervous but they all just they all just enjoyed it and I think they really um got a lot out of it so just our top takeaways from the summit um
012first number one students are struggling with significant mental health challenges top concerns that were that were expressed from the students anxiety depression depression um and some additional topics that were mentioned but not as much as the anxiety and depression were ADHD grief stress and then body image was a big one just that comparison that happen to students um students report the following substances as high-risk Vape Weed and Alcohol were the major ones the good news I thought the good takeaway was 90% of the students um felt connected to a supportive adult so I think that speaks a lot to our LCS family and just trying to to work with students so um this is these were some of the things that they felt like anxiety and depression when they described them these are the words
013of the students anxiety fear of what's about to come overwhelming and controlling takes a hold of you and takes a toll on you isolate self pull back worry worry about everything it's exhausting um one student said she just sits in the parking lot after school and she's like just so it was so exhausting kind of that pressure to get through the day um depression as described by students no response from adults to deal with it or fix it no solution I thought this was really interesting too because I think as adults I can sometimes we might see that see depression as laziness right loss of motivation we we might see that as laziness and it might manifest itself in grades and academics as laziness when it's really depression um feels very tired at the end
014of the day and that was was the one um don't want to go to bed sadness you can't get out of the funk seasonal um so they had a lot I thought how they described it is what it really feels like I thought they did an excellent job um and then this was the question about Subs andate sub use so um weed and THC we group those together um that seemed to be a the most prominent one nicotine was up there um and Vapes kind of crosses over between the bottom one on the weed and THC if that makes sense because oftentimes they use a vape with the THC yeah um and alcohol has gotten gotten what I would say I was surprised that alcohol was slower um just a couple things too that I
015found really interesting what they perceived as high risk I kind of think of that more in terms of right what we've learned in school students perceived if you can get it it's high risk right so if I can get alcohol it's high risk for addiction if I can get weed or Vapes it's high risk for addiction the other part that they said too is if it's common place in in families right if I see my families do it and it's okay then it's it's common place that I might follow in that same track so those were I really I really liked what they said about the higher risk trusted adult this is what I went back to um they said 90% of the participants of the youth Summit could identify as a supportive School Adult
016um and they have an overwhelming desire to kind of build a trusting relationship with adults um and that they they want to be more viewed as adult um and students are kind of yearning for adults to pay attention to them and be more involved um additional information they enjoy living in a small town atmosphere like Logansport and the diversity and the cultures they feel a sense of community here but they're also the the disadvantage was they're looking for more to do for students their age so that was just a quick synopsis there's lots of information but if anyone has any questions I'm happy to Karen would you share what maybe what's the next step like what comes next yes what the next step that's a good question you're always wanting more you're always wanting more
017I [Laughter] know um well we haven't quite gotten there yet I don't think ex these results right we have another survey results to look at oh thank you Mr Miller yes we talked about we also have another survey that we did the inys survey and we do that during impact and we're in the process of gathering those results which kind of um go right around kind of gather around that same substance abuse to kind of triangulate the data so so we're working to look at that maybe seeing how for County can help with some of that they are helping right now with Catch My Breath quite a bit I think um our our Dean's office and Mr dupes have said they've had a lot of success with that um and I think they are going
018to have at our last meeting maybe an addictions person who would come in that that we could access to so we are looking at ways and I did forget to mention for County sponsored this so we were so grateful um they had a grant and they sponsored it for us and we were able to kind of have T-shirts and do a lot of different things with the kids so it was really fun we would like to expand it next year maybe to the county kind of as a county so include all of the County schools and get their feedback so that's kind of where we're going to for next year I think it's it was it's very cool because this is the first time we've ever really brought kids together and ask them these types
019of questions and so it was very and so you know like from this now Mrs hes is forming a a student safety group and so she's going to do the same thing and bring in student oh Chris is out there I'm sorry bring bring different K kids in um just as they did and to together how they feel about school and how they feel about safety at school and like do that from a kid's perspective and so I think it's you know I think it's it's it's a great thing because I we're now to the point where we we feel like we're able to do that and then take that input and wow it it will be very powerful and very useful yes yes yes it was excellent feed feedback there were things that of
020course the counselors we can work on and do a little bit better especially the question about why they don't reach out right why they don't reach out to help it was just it was really informative so I really just enjoyed hearing what the kids had to say we didn't it wasn't anyone from the school who asked the questions that was a big part of it it was all volunteers so we had volunteers come in and they ask the questions and the students were like I'm so glad it wasn't anyone from the school cu they wouldn't want to hurt our feelings or they'd be really sensitive if it I think if it was us but yeah so it went really well I was glad that we did it thank you Karen thank you sorry well Brad's
021hoing his way up to the front here I have uh forgotten to welcome Vicky bird hard new the school board member uh I just moved on you know you've been here forever so we're welcoming Vicky to here she brings a lot of interesting um she do a lot of things in her life that will make her a valuable asset to the school school board's always really great we have lots of variety of thoughts and uh work histories and that kind of thing so we're glad to have you here thank you glad to be here all right moving on and Brad we're glad to have you here uh next on the agenda is the Fairview Elementary presentation Mr starky we have Mrs Nicholson and Mrs cagnola here tonight so here we go ladies yes I know
022you've been waiting for this all year so good evening and thank you for the opportunity to present this evening we're super excited to share with you I'm Megan Nicholson and this is Katrina scagnoli my assistant principal and we are going to share with you on this first slide a couple of our MOS for this school year first of all I'll be there for you if you haven't caught on colleagues this is a friends themed presentation and also Creative Solutions so I'll be referring back to these motos throughout the presentation okay as you know we are a new team of Administrators this year as Mrs Chris hes retired from her very impressive tenure at Fairview last year and Katrina and I both had the honor to work very closely with Chris in the last few years
023and um it was very important to us moving forward as the new lead in the building to make sure that we continue to support her Legacy that she has created there and also that meant supporting the staff the students and families that have been so greatly impacted by her over the years so this evening we're excited to share with you how we've supported the morale in the building throughout this transition obviously our little Queen there moved on to a partial retirement and um we also will be of course highlighting our amazing El teacher Holly Miller that we we um celebrated earlier so first off we want uh to let you know that in order for our students to be successful we know that our staff has to be and feel supported so with that being
024said our mission over the summer was to make sure that we kept the overall climate and culture of Fairview as one of our primary focuses moving forward so Katrina and I made it a priority as we started the new school year um and that led us to choosing I'll be there for you as our motto for the year and it's just a little added bonus that we get to do like a bunch of friends themed fun things with our staff at various times throughout the school year so in August before we returned to school I personally met with several building leaders we're talking teachers and staff who have been at fair viiew for a while a long time and then some teachers who came over from Franklin and the resounding response when I asked them
025what they loved about fair viiew was that it's a family atmosphere so everyone's willing to help each other and we all work so well together despite any differences in opinion that we might have so maintaining that was a big priority for us we also put out a survey to the staff in July asking them for some valuable feedback um and it had different topics on it like classroom management um their understanding of our PBIS model that we have and then just support for behaviors in classroom among other things and then using that information we were able to make sure that our staff felt fully support reced on day one as soon as we returned in August so a transition in leadership can have a big effect on students too so um funny story students often
026tell us that they miss Mrs hes and actually on Friday I was called Mrs hes by a student and I made sure they knew how flattered I was by that statement and I know we one of the teachers sent her a video today of one of our kiddos who like got a mohawk and he was so excited so he sent a little video to Mrs H her know CU they had a really great relationship so I made sure um to tell all of the students who bring up Mrs hes to me that she will be here you just never know when and she does she comes and visits and they love that so uh Katrina and I have been in the classrooms we made an effort to go in as soon as we got back
027in August and by the end of September we had spent a lot of time um going through and reading to each class actually so we had been to every single classroom by the end of the month and um we read special books we did activities with the kids the book that I read There is called schools more than a building was actually written during covid times to remind students that um there's so much more to school than the academics that we do it's more than like floors and windows and doors it's a place where you're safe and loved and so we really established you know the safe people that they can go to at school and it was really it was really good and they enjoyed it and then um Katrina read kindness is my
028superpower and during her interactions she focused on techniques taught by the amazing Christina smackin if anybody is familiar with her okay making an effort to spend time with students despite our busy schedules is definitely a challenge for administrators but it's something that Katrina and I continue to make an effort to do on a regular basis and so we enjoy having lunches with the kids when we can um and playing games with them and Katrina has continued working with a group of our El students that she worked with last year um and she's been working with them on um prepping them for weda and just encouraging them in their development of their English language acquisition and I've enjoyed in inviting students to help me on the announcements especially during Hispanic Heritage Month they uh we invited
029students to read a fact with us and then they got to share a little bit about their Heritage as well so it was really great they really enjoyed that this year we've implemented some additional morale Builders to give that extra level of support to our staff as they have experienced this transition in leadership and one of those activities we're actually doing one right now today um is an underground spirit week so basically that's where the staff is having a Spirit Week a dress up week if you will and the kids don't know about it and so it gets progressively more obvious and the Antics become greater as the week goes on so there you can see our third grade team drinking out of questionable items for anything but a cup day so Beth John son's
030drinking out of a Croc just leave it to bed that checks out um there's a bag okay it's there's a bag but then today for our underground spirit week this week we had funny feet so when um Applebee's came to you know give Holly Miller her award she had two different boots on and so the Applebee's is very confused I do not have a gray boot on anymore but we have we have a good time did the kids notice yes and then the Applebees lady said something yeah they don't put it past us to do weird things though we'll see as the week goes on tomorrow's decades day so we've also invited the staff um at Halloween to go trick-or-treating through the office so during their prep period and on lunch they came to like
031different offices within the office and they got different treats and it was a lot of fun um and the students didn't trick-or treat obviously but we had a um like a book dress up day book character dress up at that time too then one of our staff members Christa Davis along with our Music Teacher John Higgins designed a school t-shirt that we sold to staff and students and families as a fundraiser for our student council so that's a great uniting thing that we did as well so our motto I'll be there for you couldn't be more important than during this transitional time period and finding ways to keep our colleagues encouraged and leaning on one another has been really essential for us so our job as Educators is challenging and being able to rely on
032our school family is vital to our success and then ultimately the success of our students so once once a month we have mornings with Meg and Katrina in the lounge where we just kind of have coffee and fellowship and just catch up together um visitors to our building really enjoy our trivia our throwback Thursday trivia that we have so basically I pick a you know Millennial trivia question that I ask over the announcements and the staff members play and they win a prize and they really love it but we won't ask you to answer any of these questions right now I promise so I think Reeds won two or three times we're always impressed yes Aaron Reed is a strong participant so that shows you you're doing something right now right between our staff Christmas
033party and carryin that we have silly staff games and our dress up days we are consistently providing opportunities to bring joy to our staff and we truly work as a team and we jump in wherever we're needed even if that means taking on extra responsibilities during flu season which we have done our staff is dedicated to continuing their education through various cours workk to help in all subject areas and at the end of the day we're here to support one another and to lift one another up the best that we can so that we can be the best we can be for our students no matter what of course we continue to encourage our students by recognizing their hard work with positive office referrals and we've recognized over 40 students so far this school year
034with those one of my all-time favorite moments is um seeing the look in the kiddo's eyes when they're adult that you're calling picks up and they can just hear the pride in their voice they just don't even know what to do and it's a really special thing so that's one of our favorite things and Mrs scagnoli and I have both cried a little bit in those moments because it is it's it's it gets you emotional and it's only takes a few minutes and it really establishes a good relationship with the kiddo and you in that moment too one of our most prized rituals at Fairview is our monthly Falcon flock and each month we get the opportunity to come together as a school Community we celebrate all the birthdays of all the students and staff
035that have been had that month we recognize their hard work and Positive Choices and we have some good oldfashioned fun so our Sr Danny Ferris was a really great sport I know he was elsewhere as well and he actually requested to be pied in the face at our December Falcon flock and the best part was that this was really conflicting for the kids because they didn't want to pie a police officer that was it just didn't seem right for them so at our August Falcon flock it was actually Olympics themed and our opening ceremony um all each class had a flag that they created for a different country and many of those countries actually represent the heritage of many students that we have in our building in September it was berries themed and the LHS
036dance team came over and taught our kiddos some sideline dances so that they can cheer on the berries and Felix is always a hit so the more often we can get him the better our November Falcon flock is probably the one that brings us the most pride and joy for the second year in a row with the help of different members of the community we've been able to provide a Thanksgiving meal for the families of five of our students um with this uh Thanksgiving dinner relay so five teams of students with one student from each grade level compete in a relay to collect different non-p perishable items that you would eat on Thanksgiving right like bucks mashed potatoes cans of green beans and um they use these tiny shopping carts so it's it's kind of
037funny um the winning team then gets one of each item and then they got a huge tenderloin that was donated by Tyson which is a really big deal and then this year um Martins donated some uh gift cards for us to be able to buy some of those other items as well so it really doesn't get much better than that as we move into talking more about some academic initiatives this year we want to think back on our other motto Creative Solutions and if there's anything that I've learned in my two and a half years as an administrator it's that I'm also apparently a very figurative firefighter so we put out a lot of fires and we have a lot of challenges that need Solutions and when Chris addressed the staff on the her last
038day with them last year she reminded us that at Fairview Elementary we do hard things and that's what sets us apart so as Katrina and I moved into these new positions we decided that we didn't want to just address the challenges we wanted to come up with Creative Solutions for those challenges as well so we've tried a lot of different new initiatives we've done tidbit Tuesdays um watchful Wednesdays which is where we give the opportunity for teachers to go watch their colleagues in the classroom and we provide coverage for them and with as with all new ideas some of them flourish and some you need to reflect upon um but one creative solution that has made a huge impact so far and that we're very proud of is our elel after school tutoring program with
039Holly Holly is someone who's incredibly invested in the success of our students as I mentioned earlier and she just naturally comes up with Creative Solutions to areas of need and then she makes it happen so she saw our newcomers and she recognized uh a need for them to have some more exposure Ure to language throughout their day and she came up with this creative solution to provide that for them so she took it upon herself with the help and encouragement of her husband Chris to design an after school program and she wrote a grant to help fund pieces of that most notably to fund the Safe Transportation of the students home after the program and the Cass County Community Foundation was generous enough to fund this grant for her and we've been Overjoyed with the
040progress that our students are making Holly's main focus was to allow these students more opportunities to speak up many times uh kids that are still acquiring the language listen amongst their predominantly English-speaking peers and they get a little um nervous when it comes to speaking um and they're learning in the process of listening but they need that opportunity to strengthen their speaking skills without the fear of misunderstanding or any kind of articulation error so Holly invites the students um their first through fourth graders and they get to stay after school three days a week for an hour to focus on the four weda domains of speaking listening reading and writing each Thursday the students put down their pencils and play games that are focused on parts of speech along with vocabulary of course she can't
041do all of this by herself so she graciously has asked for volunteers on Thursday afternoons Mrs hes was there Katrina and I have both helped out and a lot of our staff members um she's also um been blessed with her IA her instructional assistant Miss zulie who who joins her almost every afternoon and they've both created really great relationships with the kids the pure joy and confidence that these students are beginning to exude speaks volumes for the program and our staff members are just as excited to see the Transformations that are happening Mrs Miller also focuses on holidays and major events happening during out during the school year and in the fall students were encouraged to play traditional games like bobbing for apples and each child was given a sentence frame to help encourage their
042development of speaking by responding um to with their thoughts on this super silly activity like the game was fun the game was hard the game was cold and building confidence and creating those relationships has really allowed the students to bloom at this time during tutoring they often enjoy snacks that fuel their mind body and their creativity and during Christmas the students use their listening skills to follow step-by-step directions Mrs Miller focused on prepositions to help the students create these masterpieces and then they could enjoy them after they created them creating a safe Community where our El students particularly our newcomers have the opportunity to play while learning social norms is really important and learning to take turns encouraging one another and assisting where needed has created a bond that makes learning enjoyable for them so
043during the snowball activity that they did the kids had the opportunity to read and write encouraging notes to one another not only has Mrs Miller focused on the four domains um within the classroom but she invited community members to share their expertise with our students so we want to educate our future generation about all the possibilities that lie ahead for them in the future the fire department came and talked about fire safety safety and allowed the students to handle some of their gear they answered some questions that they had and they even brought two fire trucks for the students to explore Fairview is grateful for the Community Partnerships with the fire department the police station Realtors bakeries nurses dentists farmers and the C County Humane Society and applying those real world experiences and creating trust
044and building background knowledge is what's so valuable for our students and their families perhaps one of of their favorite activities so far was baking pies with Mrs Laura henkins of 316 Bakery they created their own pie crust and the filling for it and thanks to the help of our nutrition services director Josh Skinner the students were able to create and enjoy the sweet treat in the same day pretty impressive he came in in the clutch just saying it's just it's true as I mentioned earlier the majority of the funds that were provided by this grant are utilized to transport the students home from the program after tutoring and without the partnership with the Cass Area Transit and our driver Joe uh this program would not have been you guys know Joe yeah okay great this
045program would not have been possible for many of the students another great perk is that indot actually agreed to match 50% of the contracted Transportation cost so that's reimbursed to the CER Transit so it's helpful for them as well a we would be remiss if we didn't talk about the relationships that have been built through this program thanks to Mr and Mrs Miller these students feel safe loved and are excelling with their English language acquisition they donate hours of their time and resources to help generate a successful program Mr Miller even came to our grandparents in someone's special day to fill the shoes of many family members that were unable to attend and I just want to let you know this just happened today and he doesn't know about it but it's it's kindness week
046um this student in this picture right here actually wrote him this note and it says Mr Miller you are like a grandparent you will always be in my heart so he wrote that for you that just goes to show the relationship that's built and how meaningful it is so these students are not just students to our staff and to Mr Miller their family and so Holly's Vision has had a huge positive impact on the the life of students and staff alike so we can't thank her and Chris enough for that we would honestly continue on much longer highlighting the amazing things that are happening at Fairview but we also think it's important to recognize that we work with an exceptional community of Educators here in Logansport and we're blessed to have leadership here in L
047LCSC that put people first and about a month ago I lost my dad and the people that have come alongside me and um supported me at Fairview the people in this room right now and in our Corporation in general uh it's it's unmatched and there's truly something to be said for that um so that love and compassion trickles down to our kids and their families and uh it's really truly special what we have going on here in Logansport so Katrina and I would like to thank you for your time this evening and for supporting our staff our students and our families with your service on this board and we hope that we were able to convey to you tonight um the things that make Fairview special which are the people and the passion that we
048put into being what we need to be for our kids um as a special treat for you we've left you with some treats because we have to keep your morale up [Laughter] too so they've got cookies sorry we don't have enough for all of you any questions or comments from the board thank you [Applause] very before we move on to the action items anybody wants to leave can leave okay all right yeah we're going to swimming they just support so many different facets of this Corporation they have to go now to swim all right now moving on to some action items we've got this evening uh first is the consideration of recommendation to adopt the 2026 2027 school calendar I have a motion so MO is there a second second any discussion it's a great

053Department comments now the Business Report with Mr correct I think addition all I add is earlier in the agenda you approved the notice to proceed with respect to our campus needs and whatnot and projects over the next several months we will have agenda items uh for you to consider uh they'll help Define some scope some funding and locations and things that we're trying to get done uh again our campus uh while we have some new facilities we have some that are aging and still need some uh general maintenance and whatnot so uh we're simply trying to get ahead of that process and follow a a long-standing practice of uh trying to address these things proactively instead of reactively so uh just want to make the board aware of that the next several months we'll be
054busy with those kinds of things uh as the process the state of Indiana outlines is rather U lengthy so uh that's all I have for tonight outside of questions you may have for me like the project at the junior high is going well they're getting concrete blocks anyway in so the project is going well we're trying to get on the back side of the bathrooms there on the in the science wing and then those over the coming weeks will become available again to students and staff so we're looking forward to that uh and really starting next week uh really kind of kicks off a very busy time really for the rest of the school year and then Into Summer with the project as we get into some other areas that will enhance the build the
055building's needs to serve kids and staff fantastic any questions or comments all right thank you very much next is the technology Report with Mr fall uh just an update on the high school security project um we should be switching over the car readers um to the new system this week so we're going to stay busy on that and get new key fobs out to the staff so we can start using that new system so we're excited about that fantastic questions or comments thank you on to the curriculum gang this is Rosie and Dr deal hello um just one one item um so March 3rd the I read window opens um and I mentioned that because um Elementary literally starts preparing for that on the first day of school um and now with the new retention
056law um it's a lot bigger deal for us um and I just wanted to say looking at the data we do um a lot of formative assessment informal assessing skills assessments all kinds of things um and it it is everyone has to be Allin not just teachers but administrators instructional assistants everyone and I just wanted to commend our elementary people for everything that they do and getting ready for that because it's such a big thing and here we are it's on us and they'll take these last three weeks and daily they are still hitting every single student and working on all of those skills to get them ready so that's where we are third year third grade is a nervous recck she's a very non-anxiety person she is a nervous rag it's scary when you
057have to pass this tester you get held back and you're eight n years old stress all right in terms of secondary from the career center they are celebrating National CTE awareness month and they're recognizing one outstanding student from each of their programs and a new student is recognized daily on their Facebook page throughout February from the junior high they are finishing up weda testing which is for English language Learners and they have they have completely revamped their master schedule for next year to accommodate um some more remediation for Math and also look at the ways that we have quote unquote tracking um at the junior high and then they're also relocating two classrooms due to the building projects and then from the high school they received a grant to be a mentor school for reckon
0582.0 that's rural Early College network and that affects about 11,000 students across 20 districts and what that allows us to do is to break down barriers to make College more accessible for our students and so it allows for Teacher credentialing so that they can teach the Dual credit courses and that's a grant that they received over the course of five years so that's it questions comments no thank you very much next we move on to our superintendent's comments Mrs starky yeah um I'll start with Friday night I uh went to check in on our Culinary Arts students who um um were the Caterers at the Timbo Foundation um basically a prom for special needs students in cooko there were over 350 attendance it was students all the way up to adult special needs um and
059I I was so impressed by I mean our students were there and how our students got to be there to cater it was the cooko uh culinary arts class backed out the week prior and they contacted ours to see if they would be there and of course they were there um it's the biggest catering event that they've ever done it was wonderful and I will tell you you could be the most cold-hearted person and you could have walked in there and your heart would have melted it was just wonderful and I think what a great experience for our students to be able to interact and and serve it it was wonderful so I I had a vest on it had Felix on it and a girl came up to me and she said Felix the
060Cat That's the Logan sport berries and I said yes and she told me her name and said I went to school there I remember the barri bable which I'm like it was it was just wonderful it was absolutely wonderful um on a not so wonderful note the legislative session continues so um I feel like you know there are so many unknowns right now and and I I had my I've had two sit Downs so far this semester preschool and then um at the junior high last week and and teachers are very nervous and rightfully so and so I feel like you know uh one of the biggest parts of my job is to Prov IDE support and so you know my my main uh top or main conversation with teachers is just to let them
061know it's going to be okay no matter what happens we like we are here to take care of everybody and and it's going to be okay so but I also encourage them I encourage them always to talk to legislators but you know but I encourage them if you have questions or you hear things please share it with your principal and they will share it with me and I I can I will hopefully be able to get you those answers I know Saturday we have the third house session that the chamber ber office um at 9:00 but this Friday morning I will be hosting um Senator Donado and representative Manning right here in this room with the county superintendent and so they are kind enough to come and we've met with them earlier and so it's
062kind of nice to meet with the mid session um you know and so they can actually hear the actual factual of what's going on here and and how does the new Property Tax Bill impact Logan Sports schools or Pioneer so so um we're appreciative that they come here um and and share that with us um we are really trying to prepare for summer school you know we'll have a lot more information once I read is over um and and there are some unknowns for us for summer school because in November when we got our um sorry this is longer than normal but when we got our summer school reimbursement we only got uh reimbursed for 60% of the cost um for our students that were not in in third grade summer reading remediation or I
063read remediation if you will we didn't know that was going to happen that's the State's new move um they they will fully fund so they say all second and third graders doing summer school remediation all the rest will be left to we don't know what it'll look like because as they say that and they say that this will be 100% reimbursed the summer school pot didn't get any bigger so the summer school pot of money is staying the same but we are now required to offer remediation to all of these students and it's every public charter and private school across the state of Indiana so the pot of money didn't get bigger I'll let you all draw your own conclusions what we are up in the air with is what do we do about high
064school summer school and what are we going to offer so we're still really working on how how that's going to uh look um you know we want to of course offer everything we can but we have to make sure we can afford what we're going to offer and the struggling thing with summer school for high school is is that often times all those classes that we offer in the summer kids take for credit which lead to graduation so anyway we're still working on that and we're hopeful that uh boys and girls club will be funded again this summer um and that will help us offset some cost so we'll we'll see how that goes um so you know normally we've got everything figured out we know when our postings are going to go up and
065all of that but right now we don't um we are upon testing season we're almost done with weda we coming up on I read I learn sat I've asked I asked Brandy today during her goal meeting if she would put together information for me to share with our legislators also how much time out of the school year do we spend on testing it's astronomical I'll stop there because I would say a cuss word um which would not so anyway I will be sharing that information with them and then last Wednesday we had a professional development day for all step staff um and it was one of those days where I I wrote the waiver last spring so that we can have three full days where teachers are not required to do any e-learning and so
066last Wednesday um we had great professional development um we had uh prek through one staff at the Intermediate School in the cafeteria we had second through fourth grade at ivtech and then we had all fifth through 12th grade staff members at vibrant events um and let me tell you they did not have the parking to handle it we had cars parked everywhere but it was wonderful and um due do a lot of work from these two and Tammy McMahon and Chris I think even helped out there um we had some they wrote a grant for ISTA to help fund it which is how we could pay for uh to have it at vibrant event also um and to bring the speakers in and then we had some funding from um the Indiana youth Institute and
067so as we start down that path of conscious discipline it's important for our teachers and our staff members so we had instructional assistants nurses everybody was involved um to think about how how we are with our own feelings and emotions and how that interacts and how that portrays in our classroom and when we're dealing with our students and so it was very um it was a long eight hour day or it was six wasn't it it's it's a it's a lot in six hours quite honestly it it was it was great information and you could just see the wheels I went to the 5 through 12 um and you could just see the wheel spinning and you know it's it's kind of interesting too as you have conversations with I think sometimes coaches especially they
068think a lot about that relationship with their kids and students and so it it was it was just a great it was a great day and so they have done um their post survey information or done the post survey and then these guys are working on a plan of what that looks like as we Ru this out across the district and I when I was at Columbia Elementary uh Kelly's goal meeting last week or week before I can't even remember um talking about since they have started and what what they've seen and going over the last three years from I think it was like 528 major discipline referrals to the office um down to in the high 300s to was 129 so far this school year and then they break that down by grade level
069and you look at like in kindergarten let's say they had like 21 13 of those came from one student and so it's just like digging down and seeing like okay not only what are the behaviors but why are the behaviors and are we doing anything to trigger that or what can we do to help and so it's it's a completely different train of thought sometimes us taking a step back and looking at ourselves but um it was wonderful and so we look forward to more and I'll stop there all right sorry questions comments for Mrs starky all right now as your last opportunity for public comments Mr bage anything you're the only like public persons left so United Way also gave money oh United Way thank you sorry I did that all by myself so
070I not so bad I left one out their contribution was helpful yes all right now it's time for member comments Mrs bird well thank you for having me I look forward to uh learning over the next several months and working with everyone I wish mil was here he could tell you how hard it is to learn all this stuff already he gave me the rundown there you go all right Mrs gra um I just want to say thank you to Mrs Nicholson and gagol for your presentation truly enjoy that's one of the things I'm really enjoying about this is learning about the schools and I'm I'm looking forward to the uh we have visits scheduled so I'm really looking to those yeah thank you Mr cuppy I was going to recognize the donations but I
071just pulled them up there's a lot of them too many way too many to go it's been that while lately 8,000 some dollars wow you still get a tax right up right now anyway a lot of donations we appreciate them some are Anonymous which is great but that's all I think we we start live streaming or or Le streaming in July is it where it is and I've wondered about that with the donations that there are just a lot of there a lot of generous we kind of lump it into our consent agenda and I often wonder if when we get live broadcasting if it would make sense to you know offer people if you want to be anonymous that's fine but there's just so many people that reach out and give us you know
072big money little money any money and they all have a cause so it's somebody that's touched somebody there's students they're in touch with and stuff like that so I think we need to maybe rethink that before the when we start broadcast and then people have a choice if they want to keep it you know Anonymous that's fine but anyway um you know welcome it's second meeting one me first meeting um uh we're glad to have uh new people it keeps the board alive now you know it keeps Us Alive yeah it keeps Us Alive because who knows any minute so as older people we can pass away should have been checking for pulses before well you start getting older bed you'll see you'll start it's good to see some start getting injuries and stuff like
073that start doing stuff you shouldn't do skiing it's good to see some fresh the table there were a couple mugs I was getting tired of looking at I'm willing to tell them that the next time I see all right okay that's all I anything else from anybody else any Counterpoint to that all right tell you the same thing now now is the time for us to do signatures we are adjourned
