In round two, we face off against six seed, which is Lakeland High School. Lakeland ended their regular season with eight wins and four losses. Our number three seed, the Cyber Tigers, have only lost one match this year against Ky Valley. I'm your co-host, Jordan Troyer, and joining me today is >> Erica Swanson. >> Oh, yeah. And we're and we're going to be seeing a lot we're going to be seeing a lot of great uh playing tonight, actually. All right. So, why don't we talk about the players for tonight? Our players tonight on the varsity team are Jaden aka Blue J, a Izzy aka the
002pineapple queen, Kamura aka Bluey. Pogger s Deacon aka Dry Dirt, Eli aka Webbles, and our current starting player, Asher aka Library Boy. Getting right into this. Yep. Due to some technical difficulties, they have already started the match yet. And as you can tell, Asher has already taken has already taken a stock. And basically the reason we're wanting to take the stocks is because these battles tonight are in a 4v4 crew battle format, which is when players from opposing teams take turns fighting 1v one matches with the winner of a match carrying their remaining stocks, which are their lives actually, to face the next member of the opposing team. Coaches must disclose with one another in private the fighter for the first player on each team in the set. And after a player has lost a
003game, they will be eliminated from that set. And while I was explaining that a member from the enemy team actually managed to take a stock on Asher and build up his and build up Asher's percentage a bit more than we would like. Actually, the way Smash Bros. works, if you for those that don't know, is that the higher your percentage, the easier the easier it is for uh for the enemy team to launch you really far actually. So, you want to get that percentage up and hit a really big hit. >> Good to know, Jordan. Mhm. >> My question is, how do they decide on their characters? >> How do they decide on their characters? Well, there's a lot of stuff that goes into it. Could be a character you're nostalgic about since pretty much
004every character in Smash Bros. has appeared in a separate game before. Maybe they're a fan of their move set. Maybe they just think they look funny. >> Okay. >> Mhm. Could be a lot of stuff. But rest assured, all these all our players tonight have picked their favorite characters and they're planning on playing them. Well, >> okay. Can you explain the stocks again? >> Sure. The stocks are their lives. And when you get launched off of the stage and fall into what's known as the blast zone, you'll see a big colorful uh column. And that basically means that they lost a stock. Uh you have to lose all your stocks. Uh you have to make your opponent lose all of their stocks in order to win the fight. >> Mhm. So, as you can see,
005Asher is on his last stock. So, if he falls off one more time, which is right there, he's lost all three of his stocks, and he's got to move on to the next. And we have to move on to the next round. But since he managed to take a stock off of the Samus, >> uh, the Samus has to jump off because, well, they lost their stock, you know, you can't just get them all back. >> Okay. >> Mhm. All right. Yeah. And also, they cannot change their players. They cannot change their characters after they win or lose, you know. >> Okay. >> Mhm. Uh, so the Sam the Samus is going to stay a Samus and the other uh varsity cyber tigers are going to have to um are going to have to counterplay,
006pick a character that they think could win against them. >> Makes sense. >> Mhm. >> Right. And any stocks a player has lost must be relinquished at the beginning of the next game, which means they're jumping off. And after they do jump off, they have to taunt to let them know, hey, we're ready to go. So, it looks like Eli is coming up and he's playing Donkey Kong. This character was uh an enemy in the hit video game Donkey Kong. >> Mhm. He didn't appear purple in that game. So, Lakeland jumps off the stage and waiting for a taunt. Yep, there's a taunt. And now we're ready to begin. Okay, so I'm pretty Oh, so I'm pretty sure by now you've noticed is that Samus has a lot of projectiles, which are bullets and guns
007and stuff. Yeah. >> Yeah. That's >> aggressive. >> It is really aggressive. Yeah. Eli needs to pick his moves carefully. Almost fell off. >> Oh, there's a forward there. That's good. >> What's the biggest comeback you've ever seen? >> What's the biggest comeback? >> Okay, so um the a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the Cyber Tigers had only one player left and they would need to take seven stocks in order to win without losing three. The last player on their team managed to take seven stocks and didn't even lose one himself. >> He freaking took those guys down. >> Wow. >> It was crazy, I tell you. >> That's some good strategy. >> That is good strategy right there. Mhm. >> Yeah. Looks like the Samus is going to keep is
008going to keep her distance actually because Donkey Kong's arms are like tree trunks. They can do a lot of damage. >> Oo, that was a big hit. >> That was launching them all the way to the top blast zone. Yeah, all the stages have different blast zones and different platform layouts. Um, this stage right here was based on is based on Animal Crossing city folk for the Wii. Mhm. And it consists of a big stage, very long, very long in length, and two platforms that come in. Mhm. >> Oh my. >> Eli unfortunately lost a stock. Yep. It's not not not looking that good, unfortunately. There's a back air shielding. Ooh, dodge a neutral special. >> Whoa. >> Yeah, but Sam has shield shielded it. And shields only have a specific uh amount of health.
009It changes depending on the character. >> Yep. But when you destroy that shield, it leaves them vulnerable. So, you do have to use your shields wisely. >> Okay. So, each character has a different move with the the buttons. Yep. >> Explain to me those. >> Okay. Sure. So, when pressing the A button, those are known as your jab attacks. They're generally not that strong, and they and you can kind of just throw them out all willy-nilly trying to build up the damage. Now, things get special with the B button, which are known as their special moves. And every character has uh four, yeah, they have four specials. There's a neutral special where you just press the B button, a side special where you push the control stick to the side and press the B button.
010um an up B, which is self-explanatory. Control stick up and press the B button, and down B, which is the same as up B, but instead of pressing up, you press down. >> Okay. >> Yep. And um and you have to be able to know which uh you have to know which moves h are with which character. >> It's a lot to know. >> Yeah. Not just with your character, but with the opponent's character. Like Eli has to know who uh all the tricks that Samus can use and know how he can exploit it to his advantage and stuff, >> right? >> So he can play defense then. >> Yep. He's got to play his defense well. >> And speaking of defense, it looks like Lakeland uh counterpicked to Yoshi. Actually, they uh they picked
011a Yoshi. >> All right, so since Eli lost a stock just like before, he's got to jump off the stage once to lose the one stock. >> All righty. >> So, off he goes. Does a does a down be for some reason. Like there was no one below him, but oh well. They both taunt and they're ready to go. And he's immediately charging up that punch. >> Yep. >> Good hit. >> That was a pretty good hit. Actually, that dash attack. I call it the DK bowling ball cuz he like >> looked like a bowling ball. >> Yeah, cuz he looked like a bowling ball. Mhm. All right. Just just throwing out as many moves. >> Just doing as many moves as they can. vacuum. >> How does it look like behind the scene? My

Did they get pretty loud when they're playing? >> I would say so. Yeah. Uh, when Smash Bros. first started being a thing in the esports room, they had to they had to go in a different room entirely because um because a different team was having a hard time hearing themselves uh with the team chat. Yeah. But since but since those they have since quiet quieted down quite a bit. >> Mhm. Yeah. Looks like Donkey Kong tried to throw Yoshi into the stage and knock him off. >> Yeah. >> Oh, was that intentional? >> Yes, it was actually. He's trying to throw Yoshi right off the stage, like trying
013to take him out there himself because Donkey Kong has the ability uh to use what's known as a cargo throw. And what a cargo throw is is he basically puts the enemy on on his shoulders and literally carries him off, you know. Yep. Yep. That was not a cargo throw. That was just a back throw. And it ended up working. The Yoshi lost a stalk. Heck yeah, Eli. That's how we do it. >> Awesome. >> Mhm. That is really awesome. Oh, does an up special. Wow, look at that. Tries for plenty of aerials to try and catch the Yoshi out of air. And uh Oh. Oh. Ah. And while it does do a lot of damage, it doesn't do that well vertically. And Eli experienced that vertical that not good vertical uh length firsthand. So,
014the Yoshi ended up winning. Uh but Eli did take a stock. So, we're going to see who they counterpick to. >> Okay. Mhm. >> And there's strategic ways to pick your character based on that other opponent, right? >> Definitely. There are definitely different ways. And uh one thing uh one thing I'm pretty sure we neglected to actually talk about is the percentage mechanic. So whenever you do damage to your opponent, that makes their percentage rise. And the higher their percentage, the higher knockback your hits can do. >> Yep. So the strategy of the game is to just build up their percent and get a good hit in and send them off uh send them off into the blast zone and take a stock. Mhm. Yep. And it looks like, judging by the face cam, it
015looks like Deacon is coming out today. He's coming out. Does a bit of a headshake and he's going to be he's going to be ready. He's going to be playing Ice Climbers. >> He's ready to go. >> Mhm. Yeah. I was playing against Deacon a little earlier today and safe to say he destroyed me. He was uh going crazy, I tell you. >> He's on his game. >> He is on his game and he he better be. He better be. All righty. Go. >> So Yoshi's going to jump off. So we're on our third character and they're on their second character. >> Okay. >> Mhm. Think of it like uh six stalks to eight. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Six stalks to eight. So So let's see how Deacon can do it. I'm excited to see
016how he counter picks cuz he definitely cuz he was definitely chosen for a reason. I want to see like what what he has what he has in store for this Yoshi. All right. Yeah, but like I said earlier, trying to build up those percentages and stuff dodging a down throw and a forward air. Nice. >> Yeah, plenty plenty of moves. Right. Does a dash attack and up air. >> Oh, that was sweet. >> That was pretty sweet how Deacon managed to air dodge at the last second. Down throw. Oh, going to wait for the Yoshi to come down. And I guess that makes sense. Oh, and does an up air. That's awesome. Okay, shielding that. He's only at 58%. So, he might be a he'll probably be able to um he'll probably be able to
017um to take out the Yoshi without losing another stock. And speaking of stocks, that number at the top is our stocks. And as you can tell, it's a pretty funny number right now in terms of stocks. It's a Yeah, it's a pretty funny number. All right. Oh, he's doing what's known as a zero to death, which is basically a combo that takes someone from 0% to death. >> Oh, wow. >> They're very hard. >> Okay. >> Yep. So, Deacon is playing the ice climbers. And there are two different ice climbers. There's the main one and the co-main one. So, if the co-main dies, the main one can keep fighting on, but if the main one dies, then the co-main can uh then the co-main can't keep fighting. So since uh Deacon's co-main was able to
018was killed, the main can keep on fighting, you know. Um Oh, >> looks like he forwarded him. That is that is a stock in Deacon's favor. He tied it up. Yep. So now our stocks are six to six. >> Okay. >> Mhm. >> Alrighty. That is pretty good. >> It was. >> Yep. 020considering the fact that uh considering the fact that the zero to death are really hard to do. Mhm. >> Oh, grabbed him. Grabbed him. >> Yeah, >> that was impressive. >> That was Yep. He c like Nest caught Deacon's co-main on fire, but the main just jumped over it and hit him anyways before he was able to punish. Oh, thrown out plenty of aerials, I tell you. >> He's on his game tonight. >> Oh, yes, he is. >> Yeah, both of these players are actually on the game. Does a forward smash and Deacon answers with his own forward smash, but that uh the hammers aren't big enough. >> Oh, trying to go for a spike does not work, but he air dodges to the ledge. does a dash attack and an up air. Oh boy.
021Oh, does another air dodge because Nessa's air dodge does cover quite a bit of distance. And for those of you who don't know, uh an air dodge is basically when you press the shield button in the air. It basically leaves you uh invincible for a short period of time. And if you move a direction when you press the shield button, then that's what's known as a directional air dodge. Nest did that right there, but Deacon was able to capitalize it since it does have a lot of lag. It does make you invincible, but at the cost but at the cost of making it so it's hard to stay invincible, I guess. Has a lot of lag, as what's known. All right, looks like the co-main managed to survive Nessa's onslaught, I tell you. Oh, yeah.

Oh, boy. >> This seems very strategic when you have you practice that during the week. all of these moves and different characters. >> Yeah, you can practice it during the week and you can even practice it at home. >> Mhm. >> All right. So, yeah, Nest using Nest using his recovery, which if you don't know, it's basically where you take his thunder and you Oh. Oh, charging up an up smash and does it one more time for good measure, even though Deacon wasn't even on the stage. >> Oh, boy. Oh, and he grabs Deacon again. Tries for an forward air, but misses. That's good. Oh, does it again. Oh, okay. Look at that. Quite a
023good showing from Deacon. And as you can tell by the stalks, we are now quite a bit ahead, actually. Five stalks to our enemies three. Is that one of the mistakes they can make? >>
024Yeah. Yeah. If you're talking about like outside of the game, the player you the character you choose is definitely a can definitely be a be a problem if you're talking about inside the game. Well, like that directional air dodge move I mentioned earlier. Yeah. If you don't grab the ledge with that, it can leave you very vulnerable off stage and make it really hard to get back to the stage. >> Yeah, I saw that. >> There have been times I've lost dogs specifically cuz I didn't uh directional air dodge the right way. >> Mhm. Faulty air dodges are definitely a problem. I will say >> those get tricky. >> Yep. And by the looks of things, they picked they picked a new character. So, it looks like it's going to be Kirby. Okay. >> Kirby
025is going to be going against the Ice Climbers today. >> All right. What are your thoughts on Kirby? >> Kirby is a pretty interesting character. Very floaty. Very floaty. So, I doubt So, I don't know if uh it would be easy for Deacon to do his zero to death on Kirby because he would probably fly away. Um, he's got plenty of jumps and plenty of hard-hitting moves. And but his most notable move is his neutral special, which basically sucks uh sucks his enemies up and he gets their powers from it. >> Oh, >> I know. >> How do you prevent that? Uh mostly just uh mostly just keep a uh keep your distance from Kirby. >> Mhm. >> Yep. Keep your distance from Kirby. Keep your distance from Kirby and he will not suck you
026up. Mhm. But Kirby has ways to deal with that with his up special, which has projectiles that come out. Mhm. >> Oh, what was that? Was that intentional? >> Uh, probably. Well, honestly, I'm not I'm not the I'm not that sure in terms of uh in terms of like how they do it considering I haven't really been part of the varsity team myself. I don't really know their thought process. >> Okay.

Maybe he'll do that when I do that and then I can punish him off of it. And sometimes our opponents do also live stream their matches. So, I have seen Jaden like like analyzing their performance in past uh streams they've done as well. >> Oh, that's smart. >> Ah, yeah. It is it is very smart and very uh technical to do. So, >> yeah. And it looks like Jaden is actually sent

So, in the arena, oh, in the arena, it looks like Jaden has stepped into the ring and he's play picking his main character, Isabelle. And fun fact, Jaden was on one of the uh official Smash Ultimate rankings. He's one of the top 100 best Isabelle players in the entire world. >> Wow. >> I know.
031It's pretty crazy. He was like, >> he was like 86th or something on the list. It is crazy. >> Wow. >> This guy, he is crazy. >> Mhm. And what's even more crazy is the fact that Isabelle is a pretty low tier in this game, but Jaden just plays it her in a way >> that just that just makes her a really good player. And one thing you're going to see Jaden doing a lot is placing down landmines. >> Yeah. >> What do these do? >> The landmines um well, if you step on them, they send you up. And Jaden is really good at comboing you. It's really good at comboing you if you step on them. Mhm. Yeah. So, there's a landmine right there. Kirby's got to make sure to stay back. Oh, yep.
032What Jaden's doing right there is what's known as the pocket ability. So, he can basically take any character's projectiles and throw it right back at them, which means he's got to react to all of Kirby's projectiles in order to uh throw them himself. >> He's really got to be on top of it. >> Mhm. Oo, >> look at that. Yep. That's another way Jaden takes advantage of Isabelle. Isabelle has a really good recovery, so she can go all the way around the stage. >> I saw that. That was neat. >> Mhm. And you probably also saw that it zoomed out the camera, making it presumably harder for Kirby to even see that the landmine was there. >> Mhm. >> Doing plenty of damage. The last game situation. Oh, and he manages to take manages to
033take a stock off of Jaden, but he's >> the Kirby's at a really high percent. And he's a really light character. I mean, you can tell by the way he's jumping around. He don't weigh much. >> Oh. Oh. >> And he sucked up Jaden and got his powers. Now, luckily, the power is just a is just Jaden's pocket ability. And Jaden doesn't have that many really good projectiles. So, I doubt Kirby will be able to use it that much, but Jaden is going to have to be sparing with his slingshot. >> Oh, >> but he isn't sparing with his dome signs. Look at that. >> That was big. >> Sending Kirby to the top. And you're right, that was pretty big cuz that means the Cyber Tigers have won their first round. Wow, >> that's

The hitboxes are really big. >> Yeah, Izzy's playing a really interesting character known as Pyramithra, also known as Pithra or Myra. Yep. And basically what their special thing is is that Izzy can transform between two different characters with entirely different move sets. >> Very fast. >>
