001come to order here welcome everybody it's time for the uh educational meeting um hello mr bogey here mrs gepher here mr gussetti here mrs matthews one nation under god indivisible with liberties and justice for all first item on the agenda is the minutes uh do i have mr crusade and uh i recall that last meeting there was a little bit of a frenzy as uh mr brown you were wondering about transportation to new york city and whether that would work and not work and where you're going to get to go so i think there's an update that we have we do so at this time i'd like to have the omun students and coach come up and say a few words on behalf of the board of education first i want to thank caleb for

002his leadership and his dedication to this program but for you uh none of this would be possible and second a heartfelt congratulations on your accomplishments we are so proud of you and way to represent the bobcats so thank you [Applause] all right well much like class they're not going to come up until i call them up so first off thank you i mean to just granby heights in general um in particular i've been trying to get to her office and i think she i bothered her a whole lot in like two months leading up to this trip um a special thank you to beth because i was in her room a lot when it came to um money and finance and she was great and always helped me and we would not be up here

003without the support from rob and sean and andy and beth they were incredible but this club is 100 ran other than the really boring paperwork that i do so i want to let our leaders of the actual club tell you what they do and what happened in new york because um this is a hundred percent them and not me so do i actually need to call names or all right tyler's up hi i'm the secretary general for our uh gregory heights model u.n here um yeah so basically our club uh we're a model um if you don't know we basically simulate what happens at the actual u.n and we debate some real life topics and some fantastical topics that really are there to hone our you know communication skills collaboration and debate um and yeah

004we took those we hung them here and we took them to new york and carter can tell you more about his achievements in the community hello my name is carter black um i serve as the chief of staff the grammy heights model united nations club and at nismond we did quite a few things actually we um we received an award for research and preparation it was the highest award it was um research and preparation with distinction and um for that we were extremely excited because it is the highest honor for resistance and liberation we also received another award for committee participation and our achievements thereof um a lot of us four of us out of nine were given the opportunity to speak before the entire conference a conference of 2500 students and for our committees

005and representing our school just one last thing mr evans always says it's like student-led which a lot of it is but i would just like to make it clear without him we would not be here and also i just want to thank everyone for supporting us because even though it was probably the most tired and craziest five days of my life it was one of the best so just thank you and thank you mr evans um one last thing because i don't think they hike themselves up enough and then we'll set us aside for um what looks like a lot of awesome presentations from students um you know we went competed against schools from across the country we were part of the minority for being from america we met people from every continent but antarctica

006the schools they went up against are not gravity heights okay um and i say that mostly because we're better than them but they're not grandview heights because we competed against literally one of the schools was called the college prep of world affairs right we competed against the international school of panama i don't know if the whole country just attends or what but the fact is we compete against probably mostly private schools that have the money to attend tests we compete against schools that that are high schoolers essentially major in modeling they take this course as an actual class probably all four years in high school and grand view heights is truly a small place to dream big i mean we took a school that graduates 80 students a year that doesn't even have school buses

007and went to new york for the first time and literally these nine students came home as world champs that doesn't happen anywhere else that happens because of andy's leadership because of rob and sean and because beth lets me bother her truly i mean these nine are remarkable but the leadership that you guys provide um it wouldn't be possible without all of you so thank you one last time okay we'd like to get a picture yeah is your winners thank you haley thank you congratulations [Applause] you may have noticed there are a few world problems out there to solve the work has just begun yeah i'd say real quick in college i was diplomacy and foreign affairs major and i never even have heard of model un and so like i am so excited that this

008opportunity exists in grandview and i was just so thrilled to hear your success um we're really proud of you guys any other achievements to outstanding that outstanding right i think next we have up a presentation from steve jobs so just to set the stage uh president bode the board passed a contract for a k-12 athletic complex master plan for the footprint north of grandview heights high school so that includes the track football field stadium home and away concession stands baseball field restrooms out buildings parking etc and so steve and amy turks are this are with perkins will they're the same two lead architects that facilitated our master planning programming design development for the current building that we're in as well as granby heights high school we're honored to have them as partners in this next

009project and so this presentation is directly related to that steve here i can't hear you can you hear me yes i can good but is that you talking in just a second ago yes okay well amy is on um vacation in spring break but i've about sometimes called her my work life because i spent so much time with her and it seems like you just made her my wife by giving her my last name [Laughter] anyway [Music] yeah cory's coming in he's coming in great so he's not with me but but uh cory is coming in cory is a uh architect uh hopefully he's coming in here he's an architect in our office who actually did quite a bit of work on the building you're sitting so he knows he knows that building very well

010uh corey are you with us yeah i am now okay great once you uh put your video on just for a moment anyway so that the board can you'll have to give me a sec here okay so you can go ahead no worries i'll keep running ahead and done but uh yeah but corey's like i said corey is a talented architect in our um chicago office he spent a lot of time working on the middle school high school project there so we're delighted that he is helping amy and i on the athletic complex master plan i'm going to share my screen with you chris i can't do that quite yet seems it's disabled for me let me see if i can fix that okay thank you i'll uh just talk a little bit while chris

011is doing that um the i've got just a very brief uh presentation for you today we're just getting started on the project we met uh there last week there we go let's see here now make a few adjustments on my end can you all see that okay yes okay great uh we met there last week to do a a tour of the campus and uh i'll talk about that in just a moment but so we're really just just getting started uh on on the project let's see here uh there's the lovely field i took that photograph just as the trees were starting to turn and a few some of the leaves had dropped off last fall when we were looking at the project then but obviously the team was out on the field playing um

012this is the uh the schedule for the project and let me run you through some important dates and uh tell you a little bit about the process so three dates at the bottom those are board of veggies what we've got planned anyway right now for board of education presentations and reviews the 13th of course is today and as noted if you look at the overall um schedule there you'll you're seeing that we're really at the early stages of it we've got another scheduled for june 22nd and then um in august when we will have hopefully a final master plan to be able to share with the board the uh the 22nd of june is a critical date we should have by then a number of master plan options developed and some maybe preliminary pricing at

013that meeting as well so those are board of education dates and if of course if there are other dates when when the board would like to hear from us more than happy to accommodate accommodate that the seventh uh april 7th last just last week we were then uh we we had a meeting there at the school and then uh us architects along with the entire consultant team really all the engineers mechanical electrical structural plumbing were present landscape architects for present so the entire team went over and the first piece of the process that you're seeing there on the screen is just a sort of do the site tour review all the existing documentation for sort of their kick kind of kicking the tigers if you will looking at all the physical conditions of the athletic

014complex uh from sight to paving to fencing to the stadium to the colburn building to the concessions area the the north upper field backs backstops dugouts all of it and what we're in the process of doing right now here on this line item is pulling together a report of the existing conditions and as we're working through the master plan that's an important data point to be able to share with the board and uh the community at some point possibly uh what you know what our findings are and the as you'll see uh here that next item is concordat is putting some pricing information based on those maintenance items that the that the tour and assessment is uncovering so we're in the process right now of putting that report together all the disciplines should have content

015to us perkins or will by the end of this week we will be then turning that over to doug addis whom you all know and patrick condren from um concourse concord addis to put some numbers uh too and again that's a really important data point because it's always it's always important to be able to share the amount of capital that will be needed just to fix what you have as a data point sometimes when we get into a master plan or quite often actually it's sometimes tempting to look at any master plan option as well it costs this much to implement that option as opposed to doing nothing and the do nothing scheme if you will always has a price tag attached to it which is the number that we're trying to determine right now

016i will be determining with with doug and patrick's help uh the the real estate the property the buildings and structures that you have on that site require as you know maintenance and and work just to keep them running so we're taking a hard look at that and we'll have that as a data point uh moving forward the next three dates that just got circled are the dates of the master planning workshops which are happening in two in may and then one later in in june we're going to start if any of you maybe participated uh or are familiar with the programming process we did for the middle school high school project there it's not unlike that it's different in that the that the um the scope is quite different obviously um but starting with big

017picture we're gonna be in the first meeting talking about what are the overall goals and vision for that the school has for that property and then working our way into once we have that information we have the assessments um and one of the things that we want to be focusing on at that first workshop as well as what what does the school see as the needs for the property and then starting to work our way into what might some possible options be in those first and second i'm sorry second and third workshops after that second one we'll be presenting and during the second one we're presenting some options gaining some feedback and then fine-tuning and refining those and then handing off those options to again concord address to put some numbers too so that we

018can come back to the third workshop uh with i think i've got yeah so you're seeing there where uh concordia is putting some numbers to those um but coming back to that third workshop on the 29th of june with some refined options and numbers attached to those so that the workshop committee can make some informed decisions one of the things that you're seeing up at the top of the screen i don't have these highlighted or circled in red but on this line here working with every one of these workshops there's a plan to have a session with the community just to keep them abreast of the process so the first one we'll be reviewing uh we would be we will be reviewing it this first for our first workshop as well the results of the

019assessment so if we would plan to do that do the same thing with the community the plan is to record those and have those available to community members that may not be able to make it on those specific evenings but again just to keep the community abreast of the process and then the work that's happening let them have a chance to have some input so we will be working through those specific agendas the community engagement agendas with the core team which i should probably have noted at the very beginning of my apologies there's a core team meetings that are scheduled throughout the process uh eric and maybe liz and andy certainly were involved in the core team for the high school middle school project others will be added brad will be added for sure obviously

020for this project but touch points are scheduled uh with that team uh to help help guide and and manage the process let's see so i think that sort of covers really the schedule the goal is to with that blue star right at the very end here at the bottom right hand corner is to have a master plan deliverable prepared and done basically right around the time that school starts a little bit after that um so late august to have that ready if something happens along the process where we need to change a date or a deadline would certainly be in touch with andy and we'll work through that we don't anticipate that right now but sometimes you know that can happen in these processes all right i mentioned that we are in the process of

021putting the assessment report together this is just you know a visual that have you appreciate that it's that it's in progress and uh you know we're starting to lay out all the consultants have been given the the page layouts and they're preparing their own sections for this um but so you can see they're the first kind of one of the first buildings on the site as you're working your way into it right right the main entry date is the concessions building those photographs i'm actually in the process of writing the assessment and um recommendations for concord addis in terms of you know um you know what needs to happen to that particular building for instance the roof should be replaced on that building and some tuck pointing should happen so we're not trying we're not

022looking at this from the standpoint of uh we're looking at what would it take to again keep it maintain these buildings this is not um looking trying to look at uh should it should just go away wholesale once we get into the master plan process in the workshops those conversations will start to happen okay so we want to put numbers some numbers on and attach them to each of the structures on the site so that we understand what the condition of those structures are what the cost might be to maintain and keep those running out into the future so that again that's a data point to work its way into the decision process but the master plan process with that that's the end of uh what i've got for you this evening i'm happy to

023take any questions that you might have or comments make sure i understand the master planning workshops is that core team um that includes community members right it's a large group it's a pretty large group we'll say but but then those community meetings are literally open to anybody in the community yeah go ahead andy so for the workshops we're we're targeting coaches and a myriad of booster group organizations to include i think gfya soccer track all of the users of that field baseball so coaches and boosters so it will be parents coaches um as you mentioned the community meetings will be open today so essence the community the user groups will be finding at the same time potentially like this is not it's gonna be a working process where it's not all of a sudden there

024will be a master unveil correct correct okay is there anyone from the city on that core group um so i think we included greta yeah or p-liz i can't remember whether they have uh confirmed their participation i just wondered if they want someone like mike patterson steve i have a question uh you've done these before um i like to begin with the end in mind just um can you briefly describe what we'll get at the end of the process you know we say what is that here great question eric our proposal outlines a list of deliverables for you so i don't have that proposal right right in front of me but it'll include a site plan will include all the analysis uh synopsis of the process and outcomes of the process but most importantly it'll

025include we anticipate as i mentioned at that second workshop having a series of options uh to evaluate giving that information to concord as bringing back refined options and numbers attached to the third workshop and our hope is that after at the third workshop that you know a direction is is selected or a recommendation is being made by the workshop committee so that that can go to the board and the board obviously the board obviously makes the final decision on what the master plan will look like but the report itself will have process information it will have all the graphics that you might anticipate with a master plan so site plan existing conditions uh if there is an option it's possible that there might be more than one option or an option that's got a sub-option

026or a variable to it that the board can decide upon later it'll all be depicted graphically we also anticipate sort of uh you know sort of a bird's-eye sort of view down onto the athletic complex to give the board and the community a sense of um sort of the three-dimensional quality and aspects of where the master plan lands so for instance if there is a new i'm not suggesting there will be but if there's a new locker room building on the site you know that'll be depicted um in a master plan type fashion right we're not being hired to design the buildings per se but certainly if there is a new building you know we'll give it some form on the site and i'll look you know a location on the site um so all

027of that you know as you would expect at the i think as you might expect at the end of a massive plan will be part and parcel of the master plan process they'll also have cost attached to it and if there is a phasing in strategy in other words do this before you do that that would be articulated in the master plan as well so that the board elects to implement a portion of the master plan that you know you're putting you're you know you're putting money toward a good effort that's not going to be undone at some later date when you implement let's say a second phase of the master plan so if there is a phased-in strategy that ultimately develops as a part of the process that'll get along that will get articulated

028in the master plan as well so does that help yeah no thanks that's really helpful i think you know maybe underlying um that you know it's the master plan product it's not a funding strategy you know there are things that we have to do after that so when we vote in august that will not be you know deciding on a timeline approving contracts it's not um right do this to get funding for it it's um the overall plan for the site exactly it's the overall plan it's the strategy for the site it's not a kind of you know complete architectural design that you can take and give to a contractor and bid right it's it's it's it's the it's the master class for lack of better words and it just and because we've been very

029focused on this site i just want to make sure that um you know we're having this in the context of all of our uh athletic and other needs so if we recognize as part of the process that for instance the tennis courts that we use now are the tennis courts that we'll continue to use we don't need tennis courts um you know that would have that so it's not you know all that planning but it's thinking in context of all of the school district yeah i think that's a great point eric and um you know andy and i have had conversations about a softball for instance you know that's remote from your current campus and by all accounts uh it's a very very nice field so whether or not you i mean i think it'll

030be a part of the conversation whether or not ultimately you all decide you would like to see it happen there uh in the athletic complex that's to be determined but to definitely see all this all the sports that could be on that site we should be talking about golf for instance not going to be on that site right because it's because of me because of the nature of the sport but tennis could be potentially depending on you know how the site ultimately gets configured any other questions for steve all right i think that's good great time yeah yeah absolutely it's been enjoyable being with you all this evening and look forward to the process ahead of us tell your better half we missed her i will do that i i tell you she will get

031a big big kick out of us thanks so much thank you thank you steve i know chris is doing his thing i'll say that the next thing on the list we have is recognition of guests and here in the public this is the time where we invite people to come up and they have comments that they'd like to make and we welcome that part of participation with a board meeting is there anyone who'd like to come up come on and just remind you that feel free we have up to five minutes we will listen to you and appreciate what you're saying we'll not engage in debate but if you do have something that needs any follow-up we'd be happy to meet with you individually welcome oh i'm sorry one other thing please state your name

032and your address okay hi my name is amber cherys and i live at 1284 hollywood avenue my name is gwen quimby and i live on 1075 mulberry road and we're juniors in high school and we're student leaders of the bobcat anti-racism collective we are grateful to be in a school that offers clubs like bark and we want to share our support for continuing honesty and education marc is a group composed of student leaders that actively try to combat racism and raise awareness of past or ongoing issues mainly concerning race and we have hosted billionaires general meetings have provided resources to combat racism and more it is valuable to learn about the past in order to correct and acknowledge our previous mistakes ignoring issues such as racism does not make it go away there are house

033bills being proposed across the country including ohio to limit honesty and education and the discussion of divisive concepts we're glad that our school does its best to promote diversity and valuable discussions even about hard things at times which helps us grow as critical thinkers we hope this continues because it unites our district and community thank you so much thank you for coming anybody else would like to speak now great um uh on the agenda next we have kyle mann uh for a food services update we had some really good participation and comments last time i appreciate you being able to listen to all that come back to us and uh um present your knowledge not a problem and i uh thank you for allowing me to stop by and uh give you an update on

034our uh operations right now just bearcasters air casters so as um last month there was some community interest and apparent interest in kind of like the status and trajectory of the food service operation um so i thought i'd come and give you an update uh give you a little history of how we battled through copenhagen and what we did there but uh also talk about some of the initiatives we were working with then why is this not funny there we go so basically saying there was interest and i would like to let you know what was going on we're working on and uh kind of where we're standing right now in food service operation and um so pre-pandemic we're working on many initiatives and one of the uh questions that uh mrs kepler had last

035week was we had an additional ten thousand dollars that was allocated or allowed for uh funding uh at the board gaining was shortly before he got down for copen at that time what that allowed us to do was extend the hours that were two of our current employees gonna bring up to four and a half hours of employees of work every day and allow us to add to our additional um person at stevenson home venture so we increased the hours at both the high school to middle school and at the end of the venture so that's what that ten thousand yes very much so and uh they've been a great help so we'll kind of we're replacing one correctly we'll get to that um so some of the things that we were working on pre-pandemic

036we did foodie fridays where once a month we were sampling fruits and vegetables at uh both the middle school and the elementary school this was with the pto involvement so they were we would prep food and we would kind of help them and they would pass it out to the kids and as we always tried to do something a little bit different um and also we started there a number of the programs we were working on is the ohio days program which was all about maybe everything on the menu for that day is either produced or processed in the states the state of ohio we also were having romeo's visa delivered uh at least i think it was once a month to all three locations um so something that we have we partnered with them

037um local and also scratch made that was that we could serve there we were operating self-service salad bars at all three locations uh they were pretty bountiful um in full operation and then we were also able to expand some of the entrees so like steven said we were able to add a hummus entree and enhance some of the other the hot entries that we were doing there middle school we started doing smoothies every day and a few other wraps and sandwiches that we did there in high school uh allowed us to really bulk up the salad working some wraps some parfaits and some other options that was what we did i had and then we were able to increase our fresh fruit and vegetable options because we had the labor and still to process the

038product that we weren't able to do before so the current state of the actions fruity friday i'd actually even this is i kind of wrote this as things were changing because as things are constantly changing um after spring break we went back to full regular south service at stevenson and the middle school school wasn't much of a change because the students were already coming through the serving line but stevenson was a huge shift so there's some logistical stuff that we're still working on uh stephen said because the young ones are still acclimating but we were able to have students come to the serving lines we're able to really increase the variety and the options that we could do so one of the things we actually did start doing is we reissued foodie friday that was

039at stevenson and that was through pto and we're working with that we actually sampled kiwis on uh april 8th um say for kiwis and we are doing smokies next friday so we're doing a fruit and vegetable we tried to pair it back a little bit because i i was getting a little crazy and i was actually prepping things for some stuff and making stuff a little bit more elaborate working with raw ingredients right now to keep it simple so it's there but growing there um the ohio days we kind of paused because of supply chain um really the challenges with ohiones is finding a center of the plate option that is produced in the core processing state and with the supply chain i was never guaranteed that i would get certain products so a good

040conscience i couldn't say hey we're going to have an ohio hamburger and then i find that my hand came from michigan so it was kind of and i didn't want to put that out there and start doing that so that was why we kind of posted that um romeo's a little pause on that um mainly because the usda had mandated that uh every student is afforded and fresh a free breakfast and lunch every school day they are completely choose so with the increased volume that we were seeing um romeo's would have struggled to keep up with the demand because it was already kind of a challenge with when students were paying for it and then also with the way that we you're serving especially the students including pizzas the size of pizza into a bag

041delivered to the gym it's not quite optimal so kind of you know a little bit um so we were we and we have been operating salad bars at both the middle school and the high school uh high school is very bountiful it's very popular and i'll show you some pictures about that uh as we go through here uh the cell phone's been a little the limit is a little bit more limited it's at the middle school mainly because of real estate just because there's just some little space that we have in that circuit area of course that's all going to change once they move into this building so we've been doing what we can and we also kind of heard about some of the options um because we had great cups and stuff and it's

042because of coincidences and you know things that we pushed and put in place to make the line go a little bit faster and things like that so there's uh some splices we put in there but we were operating it um at the height and stephen saying we just couldn't do it it just wasn't possible but one of the things that we are doing this evening started actually this week and thanks to some parent volunteers they've been helping us get it up and running we've been starting the fresh fruit and vegetable garden so started this past monday um students have uh today we think we did like three different fruits vegetable vegetables so they had uh grape tomatoes uh multiple bell peppers and cucumbers um and then had some fresh pineapple and some legislative oranges and

043this is available to all students so it's another logistical challenge once the kids get in there get their lunch and figure out how to get into the bar so um even packers you want to decide to really just come to the sewing line and we decided to move into a freshman progression barnes salad bar um because in the past we had they picked up their salad and then and these students have one and some sides were able to go get it but really the ones the students that packed didn't get to take advantage of it so it was only really the students coming to the line so we thought we'd try to include all the students giving the opportunity to come up there and we're finding out they're taking the same things that they were

044putting out there now languages so it's uh maybe they're not getting their sunflower seeds in their bacon beds but you know they're getting some fresh food and vegetables they're able to really try some different things and it's been very popular so it's going very well um we uh we expanded on drinks before currently right now of course we're doing about six different types of entrees at the end of high school because we have the space and we have the capability to be able to offer it um the middle school we do do three to five depending on what we have uh left over what we've met we've made and also the space and timing because yet again you're limited on your space on the serving line so you can't have like three different hot options

045and two different cold have very small space where you can serve from so of course that will all change once we're in the new space um and then uh the time when i wrote this we were still kind of bagging and transporting meals from students reading the cafeteria and reading in the gym so we packaged all the meals and dropped the location so they're eating so kind of limited to so we kept it to three entrees hoping to change that um that's there um and one of the other things that parents were concerned about was the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables um so we had been offering fresh fruits and vegetables it might be something quite exotic it's apples oranges bananas grapes you know hand fruits uh vegetables basically baby carrots celery bell peppers

046a few different things here and there it was very limited in stevenson because the process we couldn't get too many things will bring back and because we were packaging everything my labor was more on putting things together than processing things hey we did it together um so it was just kind of different but that's all changed now because now we're able to offer fresh fruit and specials on supply and disturbance we choose from that of course we've expanded at uh you know the high school has a bountiful amount of fruits and vegetables here and we do as much as we can backstory as well so it's coming along so as i look into the future and as we move along here postcode um you know and into next year and even into when we built

047you know combine the buildings foodie fridays as i said we are starting back up um i haven't got any contact with the middle school pg to see if they're interested in that that would be something i would be happy to hear from them or uh you know if we can get that word out there ohio days definitely starting back in august we're going to be starting back and there's actually a new farm to school coordinator that i've worked with before in the health department with those people so we're looking to probably bring in more fresh grown products if we can and a lot of different producers so we'll see we can bring back on the holidays so that's definitely coming back romeo's i'm still happy on bringing back romeo's just because pizza's pizza and one

048of the things with in the new kitchen we're going to have the capability of making our pizzas from scratch so if we can repeat or do better than what they're doing and fresher or not have to worry about delivery we can do it so that's kind of what happens salad bars of course we're going to try to bulk out as much as possible and the addition of the fresh fruit vegetable like i talked about at stevenson so that's kind of already the plan um expanding the opportunities of entrees we've been able to do it at the high school when we move the middle school over here we'll definitely be able to do it there as well so those students will have three to four hot options you know three or four different cold options including

049the salad bar and other things like that and then also trying to expand the variety of sides that we're able to offer to students so not only just fresh fruit vegetables but some items that are minimally processed so like i call composed salads so they have like a slop or like you know something like that so you know some of those concepts and we would really love to go i'll pursue scratchman suits we were able to we've been able to figure out the best timing and we'd do a monday a week at the high school during a block day so we didn't have time to get a process um but it's always kind of like a week right now and i'd like to do that to every day and then it's only high school so

050i'd like to expand that to the middle school at least as well i'm not sure how much soup will go over stevenson that's not tomato or chicken noodle but we'll see what would be getting it down there um so with these initiatives i threw down a couple future entree ideas that we're looking at uh i've talked to my staff about these ideas that i come with that apparently i was in a very international mindset when i wrote this down but we were actually talking about doing it like a chicken tikka masala with some white rice but you can also do the chickpeas so you have the vegetarian option there i've been really wanting to make some chicken enchiladas but those are labor intensive uh but it's pretty good and then with our equipment in a

051bag we're able to actually make some you know authentic braised beef and carnitas um and depending on the street taco style and this a lot of this is also contingent on some other factors like to be able to students of the line faster with a an entree that when you're combining ingredients um if the waiver of the usda waiver does not continue i imagine volume will drop so that is something that we will definitely be able to do is a little bit more labor intensive or customizable entrees so think chipotle yeah what do you mean my volume will draw our volume will drop because right now all students are entitled to freebies correct volume is a couple different options here um stir fries that can be vegetarian or different types of meats same with a

052fried rice and chicken fried rice pork fried rice there's different ways you can do that looking at some meat sandwiches i would like to try to do some other international stuff to stevenson but with the uh like checking simpler palette down there so it's like starting with the sweet sour chicken instead of jumping to being able to general sows or you know spicy tangerine orange stick or something like that um and then something that we had done in the past at stevenson um was a homosexual meal um where the students would pick up the homeless people and they go to the salad bar pick up their vegetables where they can now they could go to freshwater vegetables and get vegetables to eat that hummus or we can actually package the vegetables with it but we

053are slow walking some entree additions to stevens and letting them get used to the process of being going through the line first before we throw more options to you know bottleneck the line they see because students get uh promises by analysis when there's into the line there and there's so many options you got to kind of limit and you know walk it through there so this is something i definitely want to start off at the beginning of next year but i'm hoping to introduce sometime this year um so you can at least see it um but a homosexual meal at the um at stevenson and definitely the middle school as well because that's a very easy bill to do and then some kind of yogurt meal the students in where it would be like yogurt

054granola string cheese and some on grams so the vegetarian option is still cold that's just another option and it's easy for us my sap to produce it's easy but it fits for out so it's just a simple easy addition option and a low-hanging fruit all right so those are the entrees so i just want to show you some pictures of what we're doing here this is our fruit and vegetable side and also kind of our breakfast items at the high school currently and i think once the middle school moves over to the new location we'll be able to repeat the same kind of process because we're able to have more space a lot more variety than option all right it off so here is uh we've actually with actually added variety this is a crazy

055salad um that we kind of came up with to try to use up some of the great tomatoes that we had that weren't gonna make it too long so uh another thing this is a asian squash it's kind of hard to see but it's another like a fresh like slaw with uh asian dressing and some ramen noodle in there that's a nice vegetable side uh this is our salad bar that we have at the high school you can see it's you know quite bountiful in 15 minutes after this picture was taken you can see the students actually end up so it's uh it's being well used so it's a challenge to maintain but uh we really like to see that they're utilizing it so sometimes with having a fresh produce you end up with some

056extra so these are actually great tomatoes that we had a bunch extra that we roasted can't roast cinnamon froze and then they turned and turned into a creamy roasted tomato soup made on the plate today with a grilled cheese sandwich that was actually today's lunch in high school no i didn't i didn't eat dinner yet it was really short but it was it's creative use of uh the product naturally i could say it's listen uh she she did the soup but she's only makes the soup beer and just her idea to roast me before i keep the tomatoes so it was uh i let her roll with some of her ideas and it always works out well um so there's another secret we made is this is a broccoli cheddar so just some of those

057scratch soups that we've made there so um i want to talk about challenges that i'm kind of currently facing of course when it comes to making things from scratch or doing anything more processes it takes more time so what i was looking to doing and this is kind of i've been in landing as i've seen the year go on and seeing our operation in the new building at the time it takes to really produce all the food and to make anything and then thinking about future enhancements it really benefit our um our staffing level to have two current employees have their hours increase to be able to make do more options like make the soup every day because right now we have to figure out what's the right day we can do this on but

058if we get that extra time we can make sure that's done every day um okay that's more enhanced entrees um we can you know help process more fruits and vegetables so if we get more fruits and pressures next door and stuff like that work on having smoothies more options often and we're different so basically increasing the options that we can do also making more complicated electricity combined um this can be done as soon as tomorrow we can start increasing the program you know the enhancing program um if we're able to at that time and we're also currently interviewing for a to our position at stevenson this is one that i told about is still kind of in flux um so we had some employees shuffle around and we're currently entering headline today at another interest

059so uh looking to get that fully staffed over there we're going to be able to introduce some things um so the usda waiver i spoke about this past year actually past two years usda has allowed uh us to offer like i said a breakfast and lunch to every student every day um and then they reimburse would give us a federal reimbursement for that right now um coming up for next school year i'm doubtful it's going to pass again um congress has already missed their best opportunity getting it passed because it would have been on the ongoing spending bill that passed about two months ago that i think is good through october um it was on that bill and it was used as an argument chip to get the world to pass they dropped it so

060um the school conservative sni school nutrition association so lobbying congregation had passed but the best opportunity in the past has already passed by so we'll see what happens um it benefits many districts but it's just something that the way that affects us has been a blessing occurs because we've been able to see our participation increase but um it's limited us on what we can do because of making so many kids through you know we have the time to make that many entries for that many students so we can do something that's a little bit more complicated if we're eating less kids without making as much of that one does the federal reimbursement come by serving certain foods or working with certain vendors um you have well yes and no there's a process for the vendors

061that you have to find we purchase most of our food through gfs but that's because we're part of a buying consortium and our government commodity our food that we get from the government is processed through gordon food service so that's what we purchased through them so like we buy chicken from tyson um we've gotten together with other school districts and sent truckloads of raw chicken to tyson so every time i buy a case of you know chicken patties from tyson i get nine dollars off of my case for the commodity dollars that's sent out there so that's why we purchase a lot through gfs um because the government has given us um commodity product and then there's also things you can get where they call government commodities so sometimes it'll be some frozen vegetables or

062sometimes there's uh fruit sometimes it's an entree but you only pay 2.95 cents for a case of a 30-pound case of peas or something like that so this is why you purchase through those um those vendors um if you are purchasing from other vendors of course there's good processes that you have to go through um to do all that and then what we can serve there are nutritionals that we have to follow there are quantities you have to follow when it comes to protein you can offer you know fruits and vegetables have to proportion a certain way for when it comes to a meal right now within a little flexible because of the waiver everything's free but when it comes to when you're going through a meal especially with the state the state is looking

063at your meal process um for a fruit for example it's a half cup portion and k through eight can only are only entitled to one half cup of fruit with their meal high school gets a full cup so they get two fruits uh so it just depends on the kind of grain level so and then how much you can portion and there's some restrictions and there's uh like any grain that we use should be a whole grain rich so 51 whole grain rich which we try to do as much as possible and you know everything's low fat low you know low saline as much as possible some of that depends on it on producers because there are um products that are approved through usda and then also when it comes to snacks for all card

064games you're really restricted on what you can purchase because you have to follow um there's caloric restrictions there's nutritional restrictions um like you really can't offer candy you know something that's not zero nutritional value but if the first ingredient is a component it's like fruit vegetable you know grain or what have you you can generally serve it um or if they're like loaded with nothing fat and something so i think the chips are baked or reduced fat you know just like that so yes and that's being kind of yeah no that makes sense and you know so much about this and i'm just worrying so help me understand sure like when you talk about like i saw you have a yogurt option yeah the yogurts that i saw get sent home were like the daniels

065or something that i consider to have high sugar which yogurt's a tricky one right like it has a lot of sugar in it so is that okay to serve according to the government restrictions you have to follow oh yes yeah that's the aggregation just to encourage you to start that is there an ideal world that exists that you can block that system and just order your own food yeah you just don't participate in the national school lunch program which that's basically you run a restaurant in school it's basically what it is yeah you don't get any federal help you don't get any reimbursement you don't get any food you don't get anything from the government we had to pay for it all and so it's literally ready to rest on the school so i just

066think based on the feedback that what we heard last meeting there's it's unclear about that piece of it and i i have um spoken to through those parents like they've reached out outside of the meeting and uh they're actually some of the ones that do the parent volunteers they're helping out so i've been talking to them and enlightening them and i'm probably gonna sit down with a group of them um just to try to inform them about the national school lunch program how it all works and why we can't necessarily bring stuff in and we wouldn't kind of discourage from bettering the second one and do this slash in-house as possible and you know those ideas um so i'm fully willing to talk to anybody about it that wants to hear about it yeah i've

067got way too much information i just love to send it out there educating so that's yeah and i don't want to like get in the way of where you're going through presentation but since katie brought up that piece of it is that true for you know i know with free and reduced price lunch and there's the standard meal but for those things like if are you allowed to offer side foods that aren't that don't necessarily abide by the federal [Music] so no matter what it doesn't matter so even like the ice cream that we serve is there's certain ice creams we can't serve so even if you're not trying to seek reimbursement for any for for like the avocados it doesn't matter by virtue of uh participating in the program whatsoever you still have to

068advise yes yeah because if you're participating in the program the state will come and review and look at what you're surveying and that happens every it was three it's been up to three or five years actually for review next year um so that's one of the things that they do look at but like i said if you're not on the program they're not coming they're not looking at anything but then of course you know students that are free don't get that benefit you don't get any money back from the government you know there's factors yeah so uh we try to push the envelope as much as we can you know when we come to the old car to give the students what we offer but if you're offering healthy you know scratch-made stuff and charging

069appropriately they're not gonna push you down on it because it means their parameters so um so basically the unknown here on this finish up here sorry sorry i don't know it's fine um but we may need to look at staffing depending on how again once we see if the waiver passes because especially if we're moving this building once we move this building is going free there's gonna be a lot of kids to be eating so there might be some more hands that need to help serve it or help backfill it or you know just have to be out there dark surface time so that's what i mean so that's kind of where we are right now you mentioned two employees moving to six hours do you have two employees that are due that walked move

070to six hours i'm pretty sure they do um i'm pretty sure and uh in i had recently had to replace a four-hour person and the challenge of finding that person um i would rather maintain the ones that i do have and work with the ones that we do have and the ones that are interested in the ones that really put the passion in already so it's an hour if the waiver doesn't get renewed are you do i understand it correctly that you're kind of facing two potential challenges one would be the volume of kids who would still want to participate because they'd have to pay yeah but then with all these extra fruits and vegetables that we want to serve the costs of the meal go up it will not it shouldn't um because what

071we're getting reversed federally now is about what we would charge um for a meal so it's going to be it's me the taxpayer pocket and then instead of the parent's pocket right now so it's about the same level of like revenue that we bring in but uh it's you know when it comes to the cost of the meal we might have to look at doing a slight cost increase but right now i think we're doing pretty good um maybe we might have a little consistency so it works out but think it's also up to me to make sure that we'll purchase things things correctly processing things correctly not having a bunch of extra waste you know so it's other things that parents have looked at but that comes with any kind of food service you

072know high volume low volume you need something you want or support or much tougher to die in your in your cooler so it's a challenge as someone's working food service for years i hate waste so all about that speaking of food waste yes in some way um if i'm to understand you correctly essentially between august and december we will be back to where we were before we pandemic yes and one of the questions i know that i had asked you previously food waste composting things like that so since we have a new kitchen are we i understand supply chain and i see the styrofoam and i'm like oh god that hurts this is uh it's something i've been interested in a long time uh i actually had a conversation with swayco about some possible grant

073money that might be available um to help this income posting i've also talked to a few other districts that might do it but um they suggested working with goes zero um who are the people that supply the dumpsters down at the city building um where kids that compost and other companies that collect compost that's where it goes so what i was looking at talking to go zero about just give because right now we do store the compost and elicit dries down there you know when we get it filled so we're going above and beyond but that is something that i've been looking at we have um the majority of our packaging is compostable um and if we can get that grant money from swayco i'd like to look into a proposable bag so then it'd

074be easier for the custodians to basically take a bag and put it into the composting compostable utensils anything you can do that can it'll hopefully minimize the amount of times that the trash has to be picked up you know and make that a little bit smaller but also be able to help the environment help is sustainable it's just always been something i've been interested in and we've been making steps and it's busy things happen and you know but yes i would like to minimize weights and do that oh no that was um i'm glad to hear that answer um and then the other thing do you have with everything you had said rather than if i'm understanding you correct rather than hiring a new person you're extending hours so it's it's basically a little little

075tetra somehow it's working to do everything that you want to do do you need to hire more well right now i'm currently looking for that to our position at state design um but that is kind of up in the air like it was it's like the waiver um i think in the midst in the hours we can definitely increase and we can you know have the options that we want to be able to do with our volume the way it was pretty pandemic uh we might definitely guarantee we'll see some increase because of the environment we did for the high school i know it was because it was free but i imagine there's more kids that are enjoying it because of the environments so we will see some of that but the only thing i

076would look at possibly adding more labor will be another you know two to three hour position here at the high school to help float between the serving lines it would be a direct service uh because the people i have in house i know they know what they're doing i know that they're passionate about it and especially when it comes to cooking you get something cooked earlier but this flavor is marinating mary it's better get it done and try to do something right away so a better utilization for labor and have this process better can we do anything more to support your initiative these changes but uh no that's i mean support that way other than um you know just give me that capability if you have to do it and you can make it down

077fine i know with kids at stevenson i know that students in altogether has a host of issues that don't present themselves the same way at the middle school in high school um and one to a degree this is at larson also but the length of time to eat i think is a constraint yes um so you know do you see there being limitations to what we can do given the time that it takes to get kids through the line get their food sit down and eat before it's time to either go to school go to recess um and do you have any suggestions to remedy um well one thing we did make a change to stevenson that didn't help increase the speed of the line is we put biometric scanners instead of doing pin hats

078um so that helped the kids get to the lineup a bit faster i'm actually looking to do that the two locations as well and they don't need to do that though right now right now that would be an extra challenge um there and then just slowly adding in the entrees that's why i haven't thrown a bunch at them and adding the size because it's taking a little bit of tackling through the process can you think about it half of stevenson like had never had a normal one exactly before just right yeah yeah and uh one of the grades only did three quarters of a year or two yeah so it's the new panniers so it's been challenging they've uh tell you those third graders picked up pretty good but the other ones we're getting there

079but we've only had a couple of meltdowns so it's not too bad and when you were talking about student students and all i thought was about what what the and i mean seemingly there's been a little bit of trouble filling this position at stevenson so we're dealing with a little bit of workforce issues too with finding people with these jobs kind of um it took a while to find the right person we did bring in a person they just turned out to be the wrong fit for the four-hour position uh we're finding we found a big person there and then we've actually had one person that was interested and i interviewed today for the two-hour position and because the two-hour position is a very challenging one to fill because it's a day but we've had

080some good potential candidates and i've been working with uh christina brandon as well about you know finding candidates and actually i suggested to her that it might be something that other departments will benefit from this maybe to look at senior centers because you have people that are on social security for a few hours and if they're capable we'll take them yeah so just different options we've looked at but it's uh it has been challenging to put it that way i understand like the challenges obviously and seeing what you have planned looks like there are healthier options that are you know planned for for the future and i think that's wonderful but i do you know the practical side of me recognizes there is a balance with cost and our constraints because every budget is a

081list of competing demands and if you give more money one place it means you're potentially not funding something else somewhere else so you know definition of a budget is an allocation of scarce resources and that's what we have to do and then also you know molly touched on the food waste it's um you know kids can be finicky and so i the things that you were outlining look like you know it's a good way to find a healthy thing that a kid might eat because in an ideal world we have our kids come in and eat like the healthiest thing out there but i'll tell you one of my kids going to leave three quarters on the plate and it's going to go in the trash so unfortunately that's why like when the parents go

082they look at their neighbors and see things there are some things i perceive is a little bit more unhealthy um but so we've got to get kids to eat sometimes it's nice that they will i have this option of that still sometimes you have to do some of the things but i will say one of the things about the food service department um if things run the way that they should and we are able to see the kids discovering here we might substitute this to sustain whatever cost so that's not my goal um that we would actually make because we bring in revenue right so we would be able to cover our own costs i have to ask is it part of the usda program that we have to offer chocolate milk or like you

083have to offer they uh two different fat contents of milk so if we did straight back i'll have to double check to make sure that the flavor isn't combined isn't incorporating that but um we offered this because they didn't flavor what we offer is skin yeah so there's zero fat in that and then we do the one percent white so i'd have to double check to make sure that this is still true but we could have our skin light and one percent white and still be compliant but i don't double check yeah yeah and i don't want to suggest like juices because that's the same thing but i will tell you if you look at the sugar in the nutritionals of the chocolate milk a steam chocolate open one percent weight is actually more sugar

084than one percent i'd say my pediatrician always used to tell us i mean i'm sure that you could find very few points but um she used to always say when kids were little that would be better to have them drink chocolate than than juice or no yeah well that's why i like if i do i'll offer alternatives to a milk like sometimes we do soy milk it has to be nutritionally comparable so i can't get water you know so that's just one of those one of those things rules written by bureaucrats it's fun here you need to talk to the usda [Music] and i think we're very interested in options i really appreciate that you prioritized you know you had a primary ask and you were very upfront about that so i really appreciate that

085i think you know someone when we get into the discussion of um you know self-sustaining or not and what's the cost and how much you know you get from the federal government versus how much you charge um parents um just to work with beth and again i think you know we're open to options okay you know i like um i think there are like emily said well it's all legending right um and so um i wouldn't presuppose like okay here's a strict limitation i think we'd be interested in hearing options yeah in fact you know molly and i said on the finance committee so i'm sure you know that's i think it would be great if we could start looking into like what would be the cost and if you assume that you know that

086there's not federal funds to offset it what is the cost of increasing two employees to six hours and i also although i am a vegetarian and my children eat primarily vegetarian also and i really like to see that you have some options and ideas for that because that's a challenge very challenging yes um i don't know if i'll able to go straight vegan but i definitely try to get a little vegetarian so and those international foods are a great spot for vegetarian entrees so i liked the cultural yes the world that's where they would pull from it's hard to find a good american meat potato uh vegetarian monsters challenging thank you thank you and we have rob brown to talk to us about experiential learning well first try cow i just wanna mess up good

087evening everyone thank you for allowing us to present tonight um we're gonna present on experiential learning so last month we had we saw some amazing examples from the middle school about what they're doing with experiential learning and so tonight we're gonna talk a little bit about what the high school does and what that looks like um you know the the first thing we discovered when talking about experiential learning is although it's a focal point it's something that we're going to continue to grow and develop it's it's deceptively complex to define and so i feel like we're in a pretty good spot with the definition and that is experiential learning enhances learning by providing authentic opportunities and reflection the reflection piece is very important it has a life and application beyond school class assignments or grades

088so really just having that real world authentic learning experience where kids have voice of choice it's not a passive process that happens to the learner rather an active process that invites them engages them to shape the learning um so that can look a lot of different ways um it's it's not just hands-on there's a lot of misconceptions with experiential learning it's not just hands-on it's not just science projects not just field trips but it can be hands-on the learning by doing instruction in which the skills are applied to real situations shadowing any time we give kids voice of choice internships mentorships labs focusing on the process so some places occurring i i put uh there's there's a lot of event picture in there the trip that the students look to france um robotics um theater

089performing arts those are all pretty easy examples to define but in the center there i put in the classroom because where experiential learning also occurs in the classroom and just a few examples of that um i watched an erosion lab in geology where you know they weren't being told about erosion they had tubs of sand and mulch it was a mess but kids were actually seeing the erosion and measuring it on their own and then seeing that and being a part of that learning group work student-led discussions in government they designed a board game that demonstrates how bills turn into law you know that that's experiential learning um they build kites and geometry to demonstrate shapes and just sort of figure things out calculus they go out to the community and find the volume of

090random objects students in english 12 study the work of various philosophers and small groups then they spend time looking for applications to ethical choices in their normal everyday lives then as a reflection piece they report back to class about the extent in which those philosophies felt relevant or applicable to modern life those are just some examples of how it's occurring in the classroom um what what it is not is just that the passive like i mentioned earlier the passive sitting and receiving information i'm calling you there is a space fat in school there's a place for it but there should be a balance of experiential learning and so right now you might be thinking to yourself well instead of just hearing about it you know it'd be great if we had an opportunity to be

091involved then you're in luck because we have some students here that are going to take you through a very short um activity and it doesn't have the typical record we're not going to give you like a physics project it's not a high school project per se but um it is an activity that will sort of take you through the experiential learning process and so i'd like to invite them up at this time and they'll introduce themselves and take you through activity hi um yeah we'll start off by introducing ourselves i'm sophia hill and i'm a senior at the school uh i'm a freshman i'm roland campbell and i'm also a freshman so what we're gonna have you do tonight it's gonna look really random at first but i promise it does have a purpose mr

092brown is going to hand out the facts to you and basically what you're going to do is you're going to have two minutes using just the materials in the back to create a structure that represents how your brain works and i will set the timer right now yeah and i just started the timer and we might come around and take a look while you're doing this you'll feel intimidated laughs there it goes so i don't know how [Music] no right so i have some questions for you all yes you should the first one is does anyone want to describe the process of building this chaos seeing a lot of cooperation with the tiny animals frustration with the time limits uh are there any volunteers to show what you can make i'll show what i made

093um so i made a brain obviously um and like it's like the right lobe and the left flow so the right lobe is like more creative and the left lobe [Music] [Laughter] it the messages are being delivered to the brain of the unicorns unicorns sort of central scientists i started with um an animal because that's like my favorite thing and then the process climbs the thought process climbs and then i have like a conductor like it's getting better and then there's a lot of fluff in here because that's when they get like off track because they'd probably ask for something and they can't wait back to an animal again so they start and then at the same spot means i don't make much progress see i was like where i was trying to get a

094cortex somehow and have all the neurons go around i didn't even bother with this molar family now i need the formation of my brain circuits and that was not two minutes i'm just gonna say that that was going from my brain when i'm dreaming so it's just kind of random with the pegasus [Music] we're not recording this or anything aren't we yeah so you know i i think i took maybe a little different approach i i took it as a more bigger picture and some in in the way in which my mind works and and so i i thought of it more along the lines of you know sometimes i try and dream big and think big picture and be aspirational and so um this represented metaphorically that i think sometimes my brain uh takes

095gambles and so i thought of this as like gambling and um i took this lego as being half built and i think of my three sons as me trying to build their future and my role in them and my brain constantly thinking about them in their future and worrying about them uh this is a leopard or a cheetah and my brain sometimes works too fast i can't slow it down and the ball is a metaphor representing sometimes my thoughts are bouncing all over my head so mine is just supposed to represent i feel like i have a lot of things on my mind all the time and i'll start to do one thing and then i'll something happens and it distracts me and then i go another round and then andy comes in um i

096feel like some of you already answered this one but what did you learn about yourself and this could be through building or just your thought process understandable my pressure situation is gonna be scary i am very liberal you need to join the finances [Music] um it was interesting how we're all chatting group how quiet we all got like there was a task and there was a deadline and we were all like personally that's when i noticed that i was like myself except we were very very quiet engaged you might be the teacher would you say that all right lastly do you think that this would have had the same learning experience if we had told you what to do check uh so this would be an example of just one way uh if you want

097to show bonnie and be in the classroom i might be like hands-on way but uh it can be used outside the classroom too uh it's a good way for a student to i think you should like fall controlling and i haven't had one right into yeah i just want to piggyback off what she said because i totally think that really was a takeaway in that there isn't just one answer but none of them are wrong and so i think that is really important and for us to embrace that and that sometimes process is as important as outcome nice job well just to close really quick i did notice that some of you were concerned about the timer just the whole point of that to add really quick was just that some people do work better

098under the pressure of the timer and anyway i just thought it was important to add that maybe this wasn't your thing if maybe this isn't your preferred method of learning and that's totally fine like that's great um we're not here to encourage experiential learning to dominate our schools we kind of what mr brown said we want it to be balanced with other methods of learning because i think we can agree as students that we all learn differently and i'm sure you guys as adults could agree you guys learn differently too and that's all we have so thank you for listening [Applause] and so that was i mean it was a little bit silly because using pipeliners and we don't typically do that you don't necessarily have girlboard applications but as they took you through the

099process you could see that you had a defined set of materials and defined time limit you had problems but you were in charge of your learning and like mr kopp said it's uh it's the process so without um sort of saying we were doing this um you know some of our other our big goals for the high school visible thinking routines making thinking visible making your process visible you were doing that that's also an example of some of the things we did we saw we got to see your thought process through this depth of knowledge you know we we move through the four levels of depth of knowledge a lot of ways using question stems and so um you know the first level is sort of recall if you think of jeopardy and the fourth

100level would be like shark tank you know it's it's where you're really thinking strategically and so if you look at some of the reflective questions they asked um you know what does anyone want to show what they made that's pretty much a recall question but if you talk about you know if you ask what did you learn about yourself you really have to kind of synthesize some knowledge to be able to answer that so that's a little higher level better knowledge question so um are there any questions we tried to make this brief um if you're still playing and i'm proud of them for volunteering and for doing this and they were excited they did a great job and also like i think it's you know when you get out into the so-called level um

101just that we're always going to be forced to be around people who are different than us you know you can't choose the people you work with all the time and you can't choose the task that you have to do in your job all the time so this kind of stuff just seems to be so it just helps kids to learn to be adaptable and and to change their approach in various situations too because like yeah this is a little nerve-racking for me but doing these kinds of things i think is important no matter if it's nerve-racking or not it is it teaches kids how to think now and that's the bigger skill set that will never ever be you can't test that so these students that now get to work through this when they go

102out into your real world they know i need a timer i needed this i've been so much intrinsic learning that's happening every that was a two-minute activity and i guarantee all seven of us picked up three or four things maybe about ourselves and right in each other yeah just right now so our kids are doing that they're they're prepared for whatever life is gonna happen and that that's the check that that's all we need to do that's the big part of the learning the reflection piece is really the most important part of this process really cool thanks guys thank you mr brown great job [Applause] don't know if if i can i will direct someone else too i guess the only thing i was um would you have any update on now that we've had

103over a month under the new [Music] called the new covet protocol of just outcomes and the reactions and experiences of the students so um maybe i'll i'll answer it the following way and i think this answers your question when we first began my sense was we were about 50 50 50 masks 50 not wearing masks i would say to you if you were to audit today informally k-12 it's significantly reduced i don't know i i don't i'll say 75 15 you know or 80 20 not 75 15 80 20. um in other words it has significantly decreased the percentages wearing mass i say 20 wearing them it might be 15. you get the idea um i think one of the other things i'll say that for me was eye opening that i don't know if

104this is the if i'm answering your question i went to the cakewalk this weekend and it was packed um and that was the first time i mean like i've been to an ohio state game and a basketball game and a football game and you know but but that was a packed venue uh area but but in a relatively condensed area and there weren't there wasn't a lot of mask wearing and so for for me i share that with you only to say that was one of the the first times i was like wow um this people have really turned the page um and that was a two by four to the head um so i guess to answer your question also uh you know culminating this week stevenson elementary is no longer eating in both

105the gymnasium and the cafeteria they're all in the cafeteria uh same with larson we're we're a lot more focused into traditional heating which does bring about efficiencies does bring about um kyle's ability to differentiate the menu also it lessens the burden on our custodians in terms of setup breakdown [Music] and all the logistics associated with that so i will tell you and maybe in some i don't hear much about masks like at all like adam haven't heard anything about it in i don't know three weeks so the kind of tension that was there was building up for a while then has changed at this point now we do see students staff members wearing masks i had a staff meeting yesterday and there were two or three staff members wearing masks you know i think there

106were two or three students i think wearing masks so and my sense is both are being respectful to each other's choices and i think there have been continued in some cases i've seen from the reports kind of week by week um yeah and i looked today it was fine yeah okay thank you yeah and sorry for the 75 15. so i do want to begin by um so some of these things are on my superintendent reports others aren't i want to i see dr clint gage is sitting in the back and congratulate him on his new opportunity with the educational service center um it is a program specialist um and i know they recruited him and i know enough about the position through my conversations with clint that um i i know my sense is

107that he's very excited and i think it will be he will be very successful and i just wanted to thank you for your service to granville heights the students the staff but also congratulate you on this next step and wish you all the very best [Applause] i want to also for those of you that don't know and there could be some of you that don't know this but our treasurer beth collier um has been named the school business official of the year by ohio association of school business officials and i i think she received her award on monday so congratulations to beth paul i want to thank god uh for her leadership with the cape walk i thought it was a hugely successful event and different this year than in previous we were in a

108different venue and you know a different place in a different location and senior tag is alive and well i see [Music] so thank you god and and also thank you to all of the many many parent volunteers some of which are present here the staff the students for a hugely successful event great job um i also just wanted to mention that we many of us were able to take a tour before this board meeting of the high school the renovated high school and i can't tell you how excited i am about the progress that's being made but also you know i'm not one of those that on blueprints can see spaces and really get a sense of what it's going to be like and and while i always knew it was going to be nice

109i have to tell you even as someone who has been so inseparable from all of the programming design development you know renderings virtual tours it's going to be way more spectacular than i even knew and uh the students deserve that the staff deserve that this community deserves that and i am so excited and um i also think that in a biased way we really got it right in that we're maintaining the historic exterior architectural greatness that is that building in an iconic way but you can be standing in one of those classrooms and i'm just telling you you feel like you're standing in one of these brand new classrooms and that is remarkable um and it doesn't matter if we're we're talking about like the science rooms are going from the dark ages to state

110of the art and the square footage is back spectacular and the form and function is going to not only help teachers teach today but into the future and how students are into the future the the natural light windows the media center the theater the gymnasium the collaboration spaces the cad spaces i mean it is going to be spectacular so uh jay not to steal your thunder but you know uh because i know you're presenting but but keep up the great work and um i'm just so honored to be a small part of such an amazing project i'm so excited for the students and staff and community to see this you know three year long construction project culminate winter break of next year um so i hope you felt that way on your tour as well

111sorry i got a little hijacked with excitement uh kindergarten screening has begun and i did want to mention that our kindergarten numbers as of today i think are ag 88 88 registered kindergartners so future thing projected that we'll have i think 94. so um you know that gives us a little wiggle room and i'll be keeping the board you'll be glad to know my phone uh up to date on a weekly basis with those registered students and staffing concerns or needs so we're monitoring that a big congratulations to first robotics team 128 the bot cats on second place won the judges in creative pit design awards at the buckeye regional competition way to go in next board meeting we have an equally exciting [Music] opportunity for you which will keep some of it on the

112down low but i'll just say this um the team 128 is going to be at the board meeting it's going to be great the time capsule at the high school has been installed um and that was a really fun event we were able to write on on the wall and um and and so that that's exciting um superintendent's coffee i know this is all exciting for everybody here the superintendent optional coffee is this friday uh at 8 30 just outside the central office there and so please come join me it will include a tour of our renovated high school which is going to be awesome and you'll get to get a first-hand view of of what it is that i'm outlining um and also and lastly grandview heights marvel cliff education foundation will celebrate its

11330th anniversary in 2022 with a growing and grandview community event friday april 29th 2022 at 6 30 p.m to 10 p.m at the lawn at grand view center located at 1525 grand view avenue on the corner of goodale boulevard and grandview avenue and you can purchase tickets online i think there's seventy five dollars per person and so it is a much more casual event than historically what the they have done and i think the official term for the dress dress is snappy casually i texted that to my wife and she said what's that he said well i'm wearing khakis in a collared shirt i don't know that's all that's all the help i can give her that's it that's all i have okay all right uh jay welcome and we're going to hear a construction

114progress yeah uh good evening and thanks again for letting us be here to speak to you about what we do and all the cool things that are going on across the way there specifically across the commons here is the high school gym and the weight room renovation which is starting to take place and it's really exciting it's very very dirty and messy right now because it's a lot of demolition going on and it's really already starting to open up you'll see the weight room specifically but uh the big divider that was across the center here that used to be an existing gym that's been taken and taken out as well that really opens up the ceiling space as well like andy mentioned we've had a lot of a lot of accomplishments this month as well

115we've had a couple of really really good months and so as we walk the second floor classrooms are ahead of schedule they're painted the ceiling so the grid system that you see up in the ceiling that's all installed the permanent light fixtures are on and burning up on the second floor so making really good progress there and i would say that the core area the media center the the gym the auditorium and performing arts center the multi-purpose one those are i would say on schedule they're progressing um well they're not quite as far along there but that's where our focus is kind of moving in there and during spring break we took advantage of the students not being here so this is all fed from one electrical service the whole building the middle middle school

116and high school as well so we did shut down throughout that week so central office thanks for accommodating that if you were here but we transferred the power solar now on one one one system um ongoing work we talked about uh the core areas as well we're also starting glass and glazing so like what i call fixed storefront which is the glass and the aluminum framing that you see behind you that's already starting as well on the second floor so again more of those finishes are coming along very nicely upcoming april 30th we'll be studying the new rooftop units so all of the all of the hvac equipment that you know pushes air throughout the entire building those will all be set on april 30s which is great and then we are on track to

117start those up uh memorial day which is a little bit ahead of schedule as well we're heading preparations for the site work and for things to happen over the summer so as we start to make this one one building the things that we've temporarily set up to separate the middle school operation from the high school operations we're really working hard to plan those so that while we're not being disrupted to the school here we'll take those down beds for the site concrete asphalt landscaping fencing the outdoor luring those are due to us this is the 14th tomorrow yes all right my day's next up there so a lot of activity a lot of thinking ahead and overall uh progressing really nicely so one one just um drill down detail specific to the site plan is

118that they phased the site plan so um there was a there was a point in time um that the entire site plan was going to be done at the same time but in essence what they're going to do now um which i which makes all the sense in the world is um so and if i get this a little wrong please correct me but the parking lots east and west of the high school forward is going to be phase one of the site plan and completed starting this uh done first it'll be done with the high school renovation so that it won't wait until the building is done that will be done when so when we move in winter break of next school year from those portions of the site plan will be done which

119and then after that which are grave phase two of the site plan will begin which will include um you know the leveling of the current the ilms larson middle school as well as the kindergarten auxiliary and all of the coordination with fairview and field playground etc any questions um during that site time we'll access from fairview to the new middle school and now be affected by that definition significantly so um access from therapy like coming from third this way to the middle school yes that will be complete access throughout the class yeah so that's a really good that's a great question and i should have mentioned that when i talked about the phasing so also it is inked done the kindergarten auxiliary building actually is coming down this summer the large parking lot will be

120built and completed before school starts next year that also is newish news and that's a win and it's a win because our staff will have full access to the large parking lot that will be completed at the start of next year and so that's a win will we have access to first at the start of the school year or would that be true no currently do not well right if at the start so the larson the edison marshall building will act the same until the switch over so from first to that parking lot that drop-off parking lot will maintain accessible through throughout while that building yeah there may be some some opportunities we take advantage of while there's no school going on with that but as far as functionality for the school itself nothing will

121change until winter break the move over and then when we start to take down the larson building and then after winter break so january january 2023 yeah january 23 yes this building will be mostly access to via oakland yes well in in the first half of therapy so we're gonna yeah exactly okay so the the lock that you will not have access to will be oakland lots in front of this building right because we'll take them that will all come offline but you'll also have back the open lot in front of the high school in high school on oakland third sounds like there's probably gonna i don't know if you cross that bridge yet but like come up with a whole new drop-off plans yeah we'll definitely play along with this i'm just not going

122to sean and i love this yeah and chris dice helps us with you know maps and we coordinate that with the city and of course the pedestrian plan as well like yeah from a core team i just add for the other board members that we've had a lot of discussion on the budget as a whole and uh the number of change orders uh conversation uh around um uh the architect's role and all that talked with some legal advice and uh i'd be leaving tomorrow in the core team meeting we'll be talking with represent a high representative of their architectural team so um are pursuing nothing to report yet as an outcome or anything but um very much again that's some kind of finance i believe as well just track the overall cost there's always a

123little bit of overlap between the core and finance yes there is yeah i guess that's information for coming hopefully soon all right um so it was a very quick meeting as told that august will be longer but what you see in front of us are in this packet is just really quick um changes a lot of them are connected to language changes that need to be made um but nothing that really got anyone's attention um i asked a lot of questions for longer it was interesting so as i understand in the attachment you can see the specifics of the policies that we're asking the board to recommend [Music] and there were a few that didn't get recommended that are just in reference to district managed transportation which we don't possess sounds straightforward any questions thank

124you how about a teaching and learning committee uh we met as well we discussed a few things uh centered around some requirements for the training for our district and some of the math changes those are the major things that we have discussed as well as in my principle any questions thank you uh move on to business and finance and the treasurer presentation okay yes what you were like world treasurer i think it was intergalactic [Music] okay so i have a brief treasures report i've lost my voice over the last few days and today i'm finally able to talk with him i'm going to keep it brief here um so general fund we um the highlight here is we got our final tax settlement the first half of 2022 and we were about 290 000 over

125our budget so our our actual revenue is about almost almost two percent over what [Music] the homestead rollback the grandview yard money um comes in after that settlement the graveyard money came in at the very beginning of april so you'll see that in my next month's financial reports updates so looking at our general fund expenditures 75 of the way through the year and we have spent about 73.5 of budgets so we're right on track just a little bit under there our investments in our general fund have a yield to maturity of about 1.21 so we are starting to see interest rates creep back up just a tiny bit um our investment advisor from meter was at our last finance committee meeting and kind of talked about the process of you know what's going on in

126that whole environment right now and kind of the process of what we do that he and i work together to just strategically invest our funds that are in excess of what we need for immediate use um permanent improvement fund again the final settlement came in so our fund balance is about 1.4 million our unencumbered balance about 920 000 so the one item that was added here under current needs is the athletic master planning we're planning on paying for that out of our pi fund construction fund the the march interest earnings were about 20 000 project to date is about one million seven hundred twenty thousand and i i looked up today the the remaining maturities that are our staggered investments um are about a hundred and ten thousand dollars that we expect on those we

127have some money in our liquid star ohio account so a little bit of interest on there but just kind of ballpark another about another 100 000 a little over is what we expect um soft costs about 73 construction costs about 71 uh spent and our fund balance is about 17.6 million um and then i've updated our funding sources and then any questions any questions for that remember when that construction fund number was 55 million that's a lot of progress it's gonna be about a million dollars lower tomorrow too okay the next construction girl all right thank you beth uh we then have for approval you know right here meeting here i forget i do want to change your finance committee report you want me uh as that said we started off our meeting and hearing

128about from um scott gruber for major investments about the strategy for investing um so that was really interesting to hear but um the probably one of the major things we discussed is later on the agenda it's the kids club fees and the increase for that and really that i mean there's two main things there is that one we need to cover across the program i mean you know you've got to charge enough to cover the cost um but two you know then looking at what's the acceptable fee looking at other similar programs in the area we were pretty far away was being charged so i i feel confident and i think molly would say the same that where things landed was a nice balance of being able to cover the program and increase while as

129on the percentage spaces is fairly large it's not dollar wise and it's still a good deal compared to other similar programs in the area so you know they still offer swing where if you have whatever day that you're coming like if you have three days you can pick and choose the days and if you're not there you're not getting it's like you're still very flexible the more easy gardeners spoke anymore i'm like why would you send your kid any place other than kids like good programs for the summer things like that and there's um she also mentioned that no matter she has to be prepared for programming no matter who shows up that day it could be 10 kids it could be 12 kids could be 15. they need to have people on staff that

130need to have products things like that so we needed to make the jobs a little bit more competitive because um getting people to work is difficult and when you compare the pay to other similar jobs surrounding you you need to be competitive in that respect um and it seems like they do offer a variety of extra experiences during the summer too we're voting on like a yoga instructor yeah so but um so it has the full support of the finance committee the increase in the kids club fees you know otherwise i think aside from construction budget which we already touched on we always talk about the property value appeals and it's all fine and good but the negative thing that happened was house bill 126 was passed and so we won't be talking a whole

131lot about that at future meetings because they basically currently our ability to do much of what we've previously done which is really really important but that is the reality so we can no longer really by and large i mean there's there are some restrictions placed where you could but they they've restricted it so much has to be what is it's like a certain percentage and greater than 500 000 and you have to give the property under like 30 days notice and we can't do the side deals like we've been doing where we agree to drop a challenge if you know we they just pay us money so anyway it's too bad so yes yeah one other thing that i'll point out that is on the agenda tonight the two transfers that we make each april

132of grand view yard tiff money to our debt service fund to help pay the bonds so each april we take money from the general fund transfer it into a set-aside kind of a holding account and then also at that same time we take out the amount needed for the current year out of that holding account and into the debt service fund to make the actual payments this year so you'll see those two transfer recommendations those amounts correspond to that original millage model that we had from the time that the bond was passed that baker tilly helped us develop so it matches exactly to what that plan was there was one other thing i forgot to say that we touched on too there'll just be more information coming on this but i know you've all heard

133about it we're still in talks about this aep substation that's going to be built in marble cliff and the resulting loss in tax revenue for marblecliff and the increase that we will see because of how utility property is taxed and trying to come to some sort of an agreement with marvel cliff perhaps to to help them adjust to the loss they'll see so but that is not finalized yet so and that will be um one of i think my bigger takeaway is that's nine even though marvel click has voted on it it's not something that's coming right to us like this is like the increase in texture right now years away you know probably seniors at least at least 2025 right 2026. just to keep even though it looked on paper it looks like there's

134going to be new income coming there is just and it is diminishing it starts off large and then you know over what is it like 30 years or so it does it depreciates another suspension where they depreciate the property and then when it comes down to it it's far but over the course of many years it's definitely a big increase to us i think the other timing thing around that is uh i know marvel clef has asked for our consideration for um some revenue uh and i i know they would like an answer but at the same time you know there's there's no real rush on that there's nothing that's like a certain date we have to decide if we wanted to take our time and think about it um you know it's kind of

135a self-imposed deadline for us i did have one question um and maybe this is for bathtub maybe it's for the committee but i was a little confused by the summer club or kids club summer fees just that flex fee so it kind of supposes a five to seven week but i don't know how that related to other weeks [Music] so the flex fee is if a family chooses um to not attend for the whole summer but chooses somewhere between five and seven weeks instead of the eight week programs so if they want to just come for five weeks they pay an extra fee to have that flexibility because again we need to have staff for that whole summer and we talked about that program having a lot of flexibility in terms of part-time also in

136terms of flexible schedule so you know families are taking you know a couple weeks for vacation or they want to keep their kids at home for a few weeks they can still utilize kids club but they will pay that 90 one-time flex fee so if it's less than five weeks is that just not an option correct correct that's that i think i refer to it as like swing time and the other thing from other airy area programs it's eight weeks and that's it like you could go on you pay for the whole day and that's the more like i said the morning the gardener talked him like we've had an amazingly accommodating program do i have a motion for items 11 c through 13. so moved oh i'm sorry i did well i can ask

137some questions are there any questions or comments um yes i i did want to ask a little bit about how joe's not here tonight but this uh landscaping agreement i know that you have said that it's going to actually get cost savings is that correct do you know do you have any sort of figure to take to that yeah in or around 40 000 a year and so this is this is just for 2022 at this point and we can read about it yes [Music] have 12 is personnel long list of items headlined by engaged great opportunity is there a [Music] motion for personnel items 12 through 14. this is for the kids club program nice i'd like to sign up for it you should i'll go with you we'll have to charge you a

138flex speaker yeah it's literally a flexpay [Music] and then uh we have item 13 co-curricular activities for volunteers second and discussion [Music] how trees feel in the spring [Music] that's a death [Music] um i would like to discuss with a little bit with my fellow board members house bill 616. please go ahead um there are a lot of things in the bill um i sent the link to the four by their four members um there's uh is anyone not with everyone able to kind of gloss over it it's basically um there's a lot of things concerning um things that are being taught they have i'm trying to pull up a screenshot real quick um let me just okay here i have concern while i'm digging around in my phone i have concerns with how this

139house bill will affect us as a local governing body that overstretch to me on it's telling us things we can teach things we cannot teach divisive content things like that um grandview board specifically has passed resolutions and we have policies that are in conflict with this house bill one of them being the resolution that we passed last february i believe it was the 10th we have an anti-racist resolution we have a very strong anti-harassment and discrimination based on race gender sexuality and the policies that we have unanimously voted on are in direct conflict with this house bill so to me i'm having pause as a board member with the items and how we have governed and led our school district i wonder if our resolutions because the the house bill is in reference to like

140curriculum and content that's taught whereas the resolutions that we've passed are in reference to like hiring the resolutions it needs to confront systemic racist and proactively teach anti-resolution to achieve this goal so it's it is curricular it is curricula it is curricular nature it also talks about hiring it also talks about diversity which is in direct conflict with this bill um let me pull up something else it's my main pause that i'm having as a marion bringing it as a board is it's that bill fights with a lot of things that we have worked very hard curricularly culturally as a community to build there's a lot of conflict and to me this house bill is taking away our role a lot of our our role in our i would say power leadership and i am

141i having some pause on this and this is me personally and i'm wondering if my other board members are having the same cause that i'm having with it what are your thoughts where we kind of and it hasn't it's been introduced it hasn't been assigned a committee right now but to me i'm like where's everybody else do we need time it's certainly concerning and i think it will have to be discussed in this past for sure yeah well does this board or do we work with any lobbying groups that advocate against that would advocate against the spill on our behalf or so it's always beating i haven't heard them say anything and i don't know where they would fall on something like this my general sense is and it's been a while since uh you

142know the last meeting i attended i think about this topic was like two months ago which is an eternity um on this topic but my general sense was they were against it and lobbying against it um and as much as um it would diminish academic license of districts and teachers okay yeah so where i'm at right now with them being very candid like one of the section right here says teach teach use or provide any student any curricular instruction material or assignment to promote or endorse the divisive or inherent racist concepts like the overreach it's taking away a lot of our educational freedom like that we that's our purview we're the board of education our two goals we set policy we're not our two goals our two jobs are we set policy and we hire

143the superintendent and treasurer i kind of personally i would like to write a letter speaking out against the overreach right now as it stands um i i i know osb8 has a rhyme song i know osb8 has it and i know it's early i i'm having some problems with this i i felt like now i haven't read the bill in detail and i do plan to but from what i looked at it looked um fairly vague right now because like that language you just used is pretty subjective but it gives a bunch of authority to the state board of education to define these terms a little bit more and so that's where you would really see how it's going to play out because i could see taking that verbiage and being like you know we're

144fine because you can you can kind of shape that language however like mentally in a lot of different ways um but it would be up to the state board to sort of pass you know more administrative rules around it i certainly don't like the bell and tell you the cynic and means that you know that if um that if the legislature wants to pass this bill it's it's a big deal i mean we know how control is in the legislature right now there's an interesting part of it that says with respect to a student in any grades 4 through 12 teachings provide curriculum or instruction materials on sexual orientation gender identity in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for the student that goes right like that goes right against their discrimination

145policy like we have no matter what we can't discriminate against like gender genders right like things right there's that stuff um what i'm proposing i would like to write a bill that's not what i'm talking about i would like to write a letter and bring it back to the board over the next month and um i want to say i don't know if we would do a bow to see where we're at um reach out to osba get their guidance um oea has come out against it the human rights coalition has come out against it later because there's a lot of this but i want to see where the board members are i would like us to cohesively be honest because to me this is the overreach of this bill for what we do above

146and beyond some of the topics has bothersome tuning because this is it directly conflicts with a lot of our policies i fell in like a weird middle space because i 100 disagree with that bill and i i don't want to see a pass and i don't support it and i as an individual would be happy to write a letter against it on the other hand i feel like in the boundaries of our district this is not presently an issue and i hesitate to take a full board action for fear of some people misconstruing it to think that it is an issue do you know what i mean like basically creating a controversy that doesn't exist um because i fear that there might be some community members that would see us you know take a stance

147against a build that you know on the surface people would say is about making sure you don't teach gender identity issues and be like see the school district wants to teach you know they have a liberal agenda which you know it's like no that's ridiculous i mean we're nothing needs to change in this district and it's a very open and wonderful district i worry that by virtue of taking a board wide stance it would sort of make people's minds start thinking things that are you know and create like i said i'm re-keeping myself down to just create a controversy that isn't um but i say that while also like disliking this bill and wanting it to not go anywhere but that's just that's where i am my thoughts no i appreciate it i i i

148agree with where you're at but i to me i think not speaking out on it right now says that i'm okay with that happening that that's my own purview like there's a person clearly i i don't like the bill but as a board member i'm like there's there's these things in the bill that if i i feel if we don't stand up and say we are against that means that we are in support it's like the silence of not saying anything am i supporting this and i i personally fear for our students that are reading this bill like bart came and spoke again tonight is our inaction speaking louder than action i mean it's a fair question i i'm not clear on the timeline so is now the time to bring it up which to

149your point is is it early and i'm gonna really we're in a long road if and when this gets passed i'd like to learn more about what osba is doing so we can be cohesive and part of assuming that they're against it we can learn more of that then from that we can also use language to use um i you know commend and agree to your thinking i just want to be strategic in the how and i don't know if it's now and where i'm at right now is i'm saying i would like to write a letter and bring it back next month i'm not i i maybe i wasn't good i'm not asking for us to vote that we need to take a stance i personally would like to come back and reconvene and

150then maybe we can talk about writing a letter being more informed things like that but i want to put it out there right now get the get the ball going get the discussion going once that's five with how we feel on that if is that clear and how i'm coming across i think so i think well first of all i really appreciate you bringing it up and following it um and sending the information that you did um it's concerning to me as well that you know that this is my state and this is what people might be voting on you know see what it is but clearly you know it has passed in are very similar very similar not the same but similar um so it's not just some off-the-wall thing i too you know

151i think we've struggled to find that balance on one hand you know you know is this something that's our business you know our role as a school board or not i think this one um that directly gets that curriculum and and and as i understand it has penalized for teachers [Music] based on and criminal i mean i think you know including loss of license so you know it's it's not just something that's out there that's like you know here's an opinion or whatever i think this gets to um you know our governance and i and i really like your question about how does this relate to the policies that we already have which seemed to be in contradiction but again i haven't studied bill um you know in depth either i so i i appreciate

152the idea of putting the topic out there this time taking the sun we have a few weeks before the next meeting you know we can get more information from you i guess i'm a little open to figuring out what the next step is and man i will say i'm not sure it's a matter of creating a controversy you know i think it's there you know the topic is out there is being pushed and um you know it's i don't think our action would be starting anything um for better or worse you know it's there and it's being pushed in the legislature right now and you know our state has made a decision on this so um you know he's here to talk about it yeah and just one last point i just think um to

153educate our community if their guns did to speak out i mean i think us as a group of doing something is impactful but what we've learned is the more voices the more noise um and to encourage them to go and testify against or write a letter to their representative i mean i don't know seems passive but that's where you really need to mobilize your community i mean we think about that as locally elected officials people write us people come to our meetings that it changes our minds it is this this is very early on i'm not i'm not even denying that as part of me being proactive is we can as individuals absolutely we can call our state legislators tomorrow let's get out this i i don't want to see the sign i want to

154admit like and that's where i'm at personally but as a board let's take our time let's make through this and let's work through this decision absolutely but there's i think about like how the process has come to us and then going up and i don't think that's passive at all writing letters going there i think there's a protest this weekend but there's into eric's point it's not and why bring it this isn't something we can shake off like i think about our students reading this bill going is this going to happen in our school and then my heart personally went yeah and it's not what we have created like we weren't the strongest anti-harassment policy you know anti-research probably this is this is our work so on that note i'm gonna because i'm starting to

155leave my board half behind and get the personal one so i'm gonna wrap that one up hopefully we can know if it you know if it doesn't hopefully gets its first reading and it dies and then that's it yeah that's that's right meantime we can all email yeah unfortunately like i said i'm going to be sending here our legislators are on their side districts i know um you know i'd be all for encouraging folks to connect with their legislators i guess and we can talk about this online i know we were at the end but to you know what impact is it gonna make i by us just doing it i think if we're if we wanna mobilize and do something big and have the blessing of the community to do so that gets people's

156attention if this passes and it's out of our control you know that's a bigger problem um so i think we understand how much traction it is and then we can develop a campaign of how we want to go about it i think individually if you want to do something by all means you know but um you know if we were to as a i think if we were to as a board write a letter that would be the first one in our tenure that we've wrote and it would be a unique stance for all of us to stand up and say we are yeah and to me would be noteworthy but i'm going to wrap it up as i said i would thank you molly appreciate it too i really like the idea of um

157you know for a topic that would be a community address to bring it up one meeting and then yeah at that time you know me in the minutes and you know all that so i think that's good practice i appreciate that is there anything else that we had before the board uh motion to adjourn second seconded uh
