007we have a lot of things to celebrate a lot of students to celebrate and so U before we get to RB Chamberlain middle school and Samuel Bell Elementary School just a couple of announcements Board of Education hot off the presses night I really mean that right before I left for this meeting I received notification from the University of Rochester that one of our teachers Mrs Kelly lyans who is the teacher of our American sign language class at Twinsburg High School is a recipient of a 2025 singer family prize for excellence and secondary school teaching um she is going to receive $44,000 award and with that Twinsburg High School receives a $3,500 award and um she was uh Mrs lyman's was nominated by grace mumley who is a 2021 graduate of Twinsburg High School and uh
008Grace uh must have really been impressed with Mrs lyman's uh when she was a student in her American sign language class and nominated her former teacher and now uh Mrs lyman's is being honored in May um at the University of Rochester so congratulations to Mrs lyman's and thank you to grace M glumpy for reaching back to her Amma Mater and honoring one of her teachers who apparently had a very big impression upon her um formative years as a student at Twinsburg High School so absolutely delighted I called um Mrs lyman's on my way to the high school this evening and she is just so honored and so surprised and just very very happy tonight so walking on a cloud and I told her she certainly does deserve this honor so congratulations to Mrs lans's um
009we're going to celebrate somebody else who's made a significant contribution to our community and this evening it is my honor to uh introduce Grace Robbins Grace is is a senior at Twinsburg High School and Grace is here with her family this evening and we'll have Grace introduce her uh her parents and and family that is gathered tonight uh but Grace is a recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award which is the highest award you can receive if you are uh a part of the Girl Scouts and uh prior to the meeting started I asked Grace if she would take some time to introduce to us her service project it is an amazing service project and it is going to have repercussions for many babies um of our community and greater than our community moving forward
010so Mrs uh Crawford has a proclamation uh for Grace um but Grace if you could start please by just uh explaining your project what inspired you and then at the end don't forget to introduce your parents okay um so my project it it was education on Sid or infant death so I started out and I had seen this video online about this mom who had lost her baby because she was Co sleeping with her baby and the baby had slipped in between the wall and the bed and was upside down and ended up suffocating and passing away by um the wall between the wall and the bed and so this kind of really sparked my inspiration for it I am a senior so I am going off to college and I'm majoring in nursing so
011it was really kind of something that I wanted to touch on and something that was kind of always been prent in my life I've always been immersed into the medical side of it my mom works as a physical therapist and I've been to many different areas of just the medical field so it kind of inspired me and um I first started researching so the process for your Gold Award you have to go through training so it's like hours TR and then you have to do 25 hours of research before even putting your um request in with the Girl Scout committee to become an actual project and then they have to approve it and then you have to do 80 more hours of work in order in like the project area in order for them to
012um actually approve it at the end and so I did 25 hours of research I um it's a very individual thing so I created my own team like I asked members of the community to be my team I had to work with um an organization so I worked with aan children's hospital and um I did 80 hours of work I attended a lot of community baby showers which a lot of um parents or new caregivers go to if they're below a certain income threshold and they can get like free like information about like formulas and car seats and stuff like that so I was back children's hospital they would go to these um Community baby showers and they would give out free packing plays and car seats and then after the people had come and
013like signed up for it they would come over to me and I would give them like a safe sleep introduction of how to um set up their pack and play and how to safely put their baby to sleep and then so I went to three of those and then for my actual project I made these bags that had a flyer that was what the risks were and how to safely put your baby sleep on back I had a teddy bear with my logo on it and my logo said um sleep safe sleep sound put baby to sleep on back and it had a little cute thing in the middle and I had a teddy bear with a shirt that had that on it I had a sticker in it and then I also had a
014z to six month onesie that had um on the front had a baby space and said this side up and on back said this side down put baby on back I had 50 of those and I gave them out at both the baby showers or at the last baby shower and then the last part of it is sustainability so you have to be able to teach it to somebody else to organization so that they can give your information and retach your information so that it's a stopping point for you so I taught a business of babysitting class which is run by the Girl Scouts in Red Cross and I taught a bunch I taught like 11 or 12 year olds and they were so I have so many good things to say about them they
015were so attentive and everything and um I taught them everything but from how to set up a pack and pl how to put the baby to sleep in it and how to swaddle the baby and how to keep them at the safest at the safest place in their um sleeping area and so I taught them about that and then I gave out my uh bags to them so that they could or give it to somebody else and then I also gave them extra Flyers so that they could give the Flyers out and Rach the information to other people so everyone please give her another hand she's very amazing [Applause] parents you should be proud you've raised a well um respective young lady who's educated Innovative and so caring um that's just so amazing I love
016your story so if you want to step up here I will it is honoring Grace Caroline Robins girl Scott Gold Award recipient whereas the Twinsburg City School District takes pride in the students involvement in the community and whereas the Gold Award the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve is a national award which represents the difference Girl Scouts can make in their community Through learning leadership skills discovering new passions and watching how seamlessly small actions make big differences and whereas the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio encourage a Gold Award candidate to explore her community identify a need and choose and Implement a project to benefit the community and whereas Grace Robbins aior at Twinsburg High School chose to address the potentially devastating Community issue of Sid sudden infant death syndrome for her Girl Scout award
017project and whereas Grace Robbins worked with many Educators medical professionals and African Children's Hospital to educate new parents caregivers and younger teenagers about the risk associated with SIDS Grace created parent education in baby support backs that included a s educational flyer teddy bear and and a onesie with this side up on the front and this side down on the back as a reminder to parents on the safy on the safest sleep positions for young infants and whereas Grace robins's commitment to leadership service into our community is reflected in her steady persistent progress toward achieving this PR prestigious award her educational products will continue to be used to educate parents and caregivers on this issue of six now therefore be it resolved that we cord president of the Twinsburg Board of Education and Katherine and power
018superintendent of the Twinsburg City School District do hereby honor Grace Caroline Robbins on her achievement of obtaining the Gold Award [Applause] congrat uh so I have with here today my mom Brenda and my dad Jim and then I have both my parents Marilyn and [Applause] Don for all right well uh to continue with my comments I want to congratulate the Twinsburg schools foundation and any parent or family member students who were at the magic gives back show on Saturday what a fantastic show that was I'm still trying to figure out how those magic acts happened um but uh the great news about the event is that Twinsburg schools Foundation raised over $21,000 uh because of a a sold out um night and it was just a fantastic event those dollars are going to be used
019to support classroom teachers in their Innovative Grant applications Every Spring uh spring um staff members here are invited to submit Grant applications to the foundation and those dollars will be used to support Innovative programs here for our students so we sincerely thank um Dr Molly fagalii who is the trustees um chairperson as long as well as all the rest of the trustees of the um Twinsburg schools foundation for their continued dedication to our community and congratulations to them on such a successful event it was really quite something um also believe this or not it's time to start registering our kindergart students our incoming students and guess what year this is I can't I can't I okay graduating class of 2038 so there you go uh those would be our incoming kindergarten students for next school

039but mainly just updating a few words here and there mostly um I know some things that were in there such as like he or she we updated to employees to clarify that we are speaking of employees and some of these policies and um one thing that was dat as well is um policy 5512 on tobacco use and prevention basically if a a student suspected of using something um I'll use Vape for an example um it the policy titens who is able to basically um assess that and LPN um who's trained in that can be somebody who would be able to assess a student if they're suspected of use um another policy that needed a just a little more definition um was Transportation operations and um talks about school uses or using School vehicles um it
040mentioned buses but also that would include Vans if if a one of our drivers is qualified to drive a bus they definitely are qualified to drive a a van that's much smaller and it just um tightens up that language to just make it a little more clear um but not too many other changes it's just few bits of warding here and there nothing dramatic really that I can think of yeah P do you want to do the update Equity sure um the Twinsburg State School District Equity committee met last night um one of the charges this year was the creation of a calendar for each of the buildings where by month there is celebrations about the diversity that we're so proud of here in our community and last night conversation was about the month of
041March and on March 21st or actually the entire week before we leave for spring break but celebrating on the 21st of March is going to be lots of socks day socks lots of socks day celebr students with Down syndrome and so what we're asking everybody to do is to wear two different socks that day um and the reason why it's on March 21st 3:21 is that's the chromosome that is um uh uh prevalent in in students with Down syndrome and so March 21st we're going to ask everyone if they would please wear two different kind of socks make them crazy socks and then we're as also asking that if you do that please uh consider donating at least a dollar and with the dollar will be um forwarded to two different things one it'll be
042used to support our special Olympic students in the month uh month of May um um students with disabilities participate in Special Olympics over at nordonia high school and so this will um provide the funding for their t-shirts and some snacks for the children for that day and then uh the other part of those dollars will be sent to the Down Syndrome um Association of Greater Cleveland and so we look forward to a crazy socks day on March 21st and we thank the members of the tcsd equity steering committee for promoting this important um celebration of students um who have Down syndrome the other thing that we talked about at Great Lan for of Education was all of the information coming out of uh Columbus and Washington DC with respect to diversity equity and inclusion um
043there is a dear colleague letter that was written by the office of civil rights that was a long conversation last evening about about that and the impact on public schools across the country and especially here in Ohio um was the focus of our our discussion concerns about um the loss of of federal dollars um associated with um Equity movements in in schools and then the last thing I wanted to tell you is that last night we had a wonderful presentation by Twinsburg High School senior Millie wolf um Millie is a teen ambassador for um attorney general Yos office and she came to our group and she spoke eloquently about the work that she's doing about um trafficking in Ohio and across the country and the importance of that last tonight at the equity studing committee
044meeting is because in the month of April we are going to be focusing on um students who are homeless and so the tie and there are sometimes students who are traffick happen to be homeless as well and so we learned a lot as a committee last evening about all things to do with trafficking and Millie just did an amazing job um she is going to be presenting tomorrow uh afternoon to our district leadership team because it's a message everybody needs to hear so congratulations to her it was a very good meeting last night with lots of good information Shar that's awesome thank you you're welcome well that ends the committee reports um I'll turn it over to you for administrator report thank you so this evening Board of Education we have three administrative reports the
045first will be a strategic Plan update for quarter two in the areas of 21st century teaching and learning facilities and finance and um we have a a great movement underway here in our school district with regard to um the science of reading and as you know in January the entirety of our certificated staff was trained in modules regarding science of reading this evening Mrs Farthing and members of our staff are going to present an update to you with respect to um science of reading and other important topics related to 21st century teaching and learning as the first part of our our update good evening Mrs Farley thank you Mrs Powers good evening everyone see it seems like it's been a while since I've been here but it's so good evening um so uh this year
046we had two goals for 21st century teaching and learning and the first goal was related to AI artificial intelligence and as far as that work goes we have been meeting regularly there is still a lot of work to be done with AI and I don't think we'll ever be done with the work with AI and it's just a little it's a little bit scary what's out there so um our committee is actively at work for AI but our Focus this evening is going to be on the science of reading and that goal and what we have uh accomplished and worked towards so far I'm not going to read the goal to you but it's there so um as Mrs power said um this presentation was this part of the presentation was scheduled for January so
047at that point in time parents had just had their students on for three extra days and they're like what on Earth is going on it's time to go back to school um so during those three days we had our C certificated staff um assigned to complete modules um the modules on the science of reading uh were based between 7 and 22 hours so it depended on what role you have within the district as to what pathway you were assigned to work on uh this P this work has been started with the dyslexia modules at Wilcox and Bissell so we've been talking about this for a while um and these modules gave us the foundation that all of our District staff members can talk the same language and we all have the same foundation and we
048can uh have the same terminology um Dana I have a shout out to Dana Kennedy the curriculum department secretary she made this for us and it was um the science of reading Pathways where every teacher is a reading teacher uh so every teacher no matter what you teach um you have the ability to impact students in their literacy no matter what what it is related to everyone has that impact so the majority of the presentation is just going to be some pictures um our 7 to 12 Educators had most of them not our language arts teachers but most of our 7 to 12 Educators had about 7 and a half hours in their Pathways so while the teachers were done with their uh while they were done or how the schedule worked out we had
049facilitated professional development on writing and VOC vocabulary everyone was able to participate and what we did was um I did did Skip so our Focus was very strategic with writing and vocabulary because everyone can incorporate writing and vocabulary in their classroom so in this picture you'll see content Area Teachers collaborating and working together as well as ourc 12 Specialists so so that was one thing that I think really stood out to me about our professional development was our art music and PE teachers attended also and they that was K to 12 because their modules were a little shorter so they were able to be there and the collaboration and the communication that was had was really was fantastic and multiple staff members said that this was one of the best professional developments they had it
050felt like everyone was able to go back with an action like you know there was something that they could incorporate within their classroom the next day and that was our goal all along additionally Willcox and Bissell as you know and Dodge as the pathways were all different and Bissell and DOD Bissell and Willcox already started their dyslexia modules Dodge was kind of I don't want to say an anomaly but they were kind of out there because they had not done the dyslexia modules so they had a lot they had a lot of modules in a lot of time so we did not um have the ability to do a benchmark training with them at that point in time but were able to do a benchmark training with uh will Cox and Bissell and again the
051focus for them was on vocabulary and writing additionally we were able to have training for our instructional assistants they had a session on the science of reading and overview and how they can help when they're pushing into classrooms with the students how they could help as well so it was great it seem it does seem like it was a really long time ago and I don't know about you but Christmas seems like it was like a year ago but so this was not that long ago but it seems like it was a really long time ago um do you have any questions about our work the beautiful thing about it is that we're going to be able to take that learning and continue it and that I I explained to the staff members that we
052are not done like the science of reading you don't just check it off we're done so that is creation of the same terminology and um learning for all of us so that we we can go forward and we already are starting our planning for professional development for next school year so we can continue the learning and make sure we're all moving in the same direction so how often do they have to Reen you know you do not have to once you have completed the modules you do not have to complete them again so we will have our new staff members that join our district will be we will require that uh but we just want everyone to know that it's not a oneand done and I think that's the one thing about a lot of
053professional development they're like oh they're never going to talk about that again but this not in this situation so Mrs faring yes ma'am many of those people are my colleagues yes in the ESC that were helping here and they are still saying what a wonderful Workshop opportunity they had in Twinsburg thank you so that that's kudos to our staff and to our administrators and everyone that was part of that that's it's it's kind of a the model for what we're using to go out to other districts um the other comment is again as a district you are ahead of a lot of our neighboring districts who are just now starting to look at a book or a series um you guys are into it our staff is is working it and I'm very very proud
054to be a part of this District as a as a parent and and a member of the board and just a colleague in education because we are out there um further ahead than many of our neighboring areas so congratulations to all of the people all of our staff and everyone involved in this this is a lot of work and those modules I've been through all of them they're a lot of work so congratulations to everyone on the hard work that you guys have done and thank you for your support um I mean it's all about your support and thank you for supporting us you know Jen before you step down I just wanted to expound um the board saw the spreadsheets oh um that you created and that was just a boatload of work Mrs
055Farthing has such an extraordinary into detail and we are as far as we are in this community with respect to freckin because of your efforts and she will never take that as a compliment because she's all about the team and the collaboration but um there's a leader and really thank you for getting us through January's PD I know it has it was a boatload of work and your team is amazing and our administrators at the building levels helped out as well and and we we've got that checked off the list but it was all about your leadership so thank you thank you thank you thanks to the team so thank you and now I'd like to turn it over to Mr ree who's going to talk about careers which is also related to what Mrs
056Egan talked about and he has some student pres presenters also oh cool I guess there good evening again and I think one of the areas for growth in in public education has been career awareness and I hear hear people of my generation always saying I I didn't know that existed I didn't know you could do that for a living and um we talk about Equity I think this is a real Equity piece because uh some of our most disadvantaged students are not exposed to different careers and and I know even myself growing up my dad was a pipe fitter my mom was a teacher I looked at them to two of them come home at night and I said I think I'd rather be a teacher than a pipe fitter but I did had limited
057knowledge of what other options were out there so that's something we've really to expand on and are continuing to do that and I'm excited about where we're going with it as Mrs Eagan said next year with uh with looking at with the new funding available a Career Technical education course for our for our students um I'm I'm very excited about that Prospect and and helping with the development of that course but some of the things we do at RBC include our we have what we call our Veterans Day panel and we bring in uh different members of all the armed surface all armed Services as well as some of the safety forces and students sign up they ask questions they get to learn about careers in the in the armed forces and safety forces we
058bring in a cvcc panel and that students learn about the different careers and and Pathways that that you have at cvcc and some of the opportunities uh that cvcc has one of the things we've added this year that I'm very excited about is using AI virtual reality and you know to go to an advertising firm or to go see a marketing uh uh company um manufacturing it's it's it's costly it would take the whole day students would miss all of their classes but now with AI our students can put on the the virtual reality goggles and be transported to all kinds of different experiences and I really feel that's going to be an area that grows and and I'm looking forward to the product development in this area for students to be able to have
059like a real life experience in a in a way that's feasible for us without trying to put 30 kids on a bus and send them send them somewhere and within you know one 45 minute period our students could could go in this uh particular class they got a look at the restaurant industry um through through virtual reality and one of the neat things that we do is um Cleveland Clinic provides what they call their career rounds and each month they have a program where they explain different careers in the medical field and our students can sign up and go and uh through the uh interactive TV can watch and listen and ask questions of the people in the in Cleveland Clinic about the different careers and who I have here tonight is Victoria brand one
060of our seventh graders and she a attended one of our Cleveland Clinic career rounds so she's going to come up and tell you about that experience [Applause] Victoria uh good evening I hope you all are doing well I'm Victoria Brandt I'm honored to be here to talk about what I've learned from participating in the Cleveland Clinic Nikki presentation the reason I wanted to participate in the niku presentation is because my aunt works in the niku in Washington DC as a nurse practitioner I'm happy to say that she's here tonight to hear my presentation I've always had an interest in doing something in the medical field and I thought that the zoom presentation could teach me more but before the presentation officially started they had us Guess answers to questions relating to salaries what jobs do
061Etc also during the presentation they told us the job what jobs are part of the niku team that included a niku pediatrician assistant nurse manager neonatal nurse practitioner respiratory therapist and registered dietician after that they showed us what they do when a premature baby is born they showed us the steps like checking their heart rate starting positive pressure ventilation ppv repositioning the airway and suction which helps them by bringing the heart rate down then they increase it then they increase the pressure and the heart rate goes up sometimes the baby can breathe on their own and sometimes they need help with by a breathing tube after that the baby they bring the baby to the niku now most pregnancies last up to about 40 weeks but at Cleveland Clinic a baby was born at 23
062weeks crazy I know but that early birth made the top layer of the skin very fragile and at high risk of injury when the skin is fragile and not fully developed some heart rate monitors can burn the baby if that happens the Skin Care team helps if the burn comes from an IV plastic surgery has to come in and help a lot of people ask what is the most common reason for a ncku stay well breathing problems pre-term babies have a hard time breathing because of extra fluid in their lungs as you can see I really enjoyed being able to participate in this presentation and being able to learn more about the niku but that wraps up my presentation about the que clinic niku so thank you so much for listening awes thank you [Music]
063awesome thank you Victoria that was very impressive and um so that's a little bit about what we're doing at RBC to teach our students about what opportunities are out there for them beyond the walls of middle school and I'll turn it over to Mr Strickland thank you thank you awesome job Victoria that's a proud ant out there too just to the right to all right we really have some amazing kids and staff in Twinsburg City School District don't we um thank you members of the board to members of the community for joining us tonight I'm going to give you an update on our facilities um our goals are up there um one has to do with um balancing our budget throughout the school year um as all of you know uh the business department our
064budget um really uh kind of is both in general fund and permanent Improvement um so all through the year we are carefully balancing everything that we're doing um and then the uh back part of the facility's goal is around our tiger Legacy uh building project so we'll be talking a little bit about both this evening um just as a quick update we talked about this a couple of months ago um I just wanted to highlight that as part of that first goal um we are on track with everything um the only thing I would highlight is while we still are within that 80% um expenditure and budget threshold this winter has been expensive and we've seen a lot of fails in our systems um we've tried be very transparent about that uh between Roofing and
065HVAC um and I know as many of our residents will will attest to as well um the asphalt and concrete is taking a beating with the um salting and plowing that we've had to do in the freeze and Tha and the expansion we're seeing cracks in some of our uh parking lots and walkways that we have never seen before so I'm just um sort of Paving the way no pun intended um that in the spring it's going to be an expensive spring because uh we've had a really more traditional Ohio winter so um but diving into some exciting updates about tiger Legacy project um we uh through the levy process and the road show as we call it from the fall um educating the community and staff about the plan um we gathered a lot
066of feedback um during that process and then since um as many of you know um that Levy attempt failed by a few hundred votes um so we have gone back to our constituents and the voters and staff and gathered feedback and here are some highlights um that we feel that the new uh plan and the uh revisions that we've made um really address the highest level concerns that we heard uh from the community um the first one is traffic on Rena Road as you'll recall we did have a traffic study done by a local company um that was favorable for our um fall version of the project however um the new project you'll see does move uh the building potentially further up Renta road so it does create a little bit more distance um between
067our current campus and where the new building would be um Stadium relocation and impact on the surrounding neighborhood um we heard from our uh neighborhood friends in Ashdale and surrounding areas about not necessarily wanting the football stadium behind the high school and some traffic concerns there um so under the new plan as you'll see uh the stadium would be renovated right where it sits so it wouldn't relocate um environmental concerns on the Dodge campus this is something that we heard over and over but as we all know we can't really do a lot about um we the current Dodge campus um buts up to uh water treatment plant for the city of Twinsburg um the odors aren't always pleasant we can't do a lot about that however you'll see in the new uh project proposal
068um all athletic facilities are moved off of the Dodge campus so we felt that that answered that concern um that we heard over and over um adequate parking at the new prek through six building um that was something that we also consistently heard um when you've got that grade band you've got lots of classes doing lots of things often on the same nights and while we would uh try to control a lot of that through Master scheduling um the new campus proposal does provide for a lot more Park opportunities um than the prior proposal on RBC site and then uh the overall cost of the project perhaps one of the more meaningful changes in this version of the project is you'll see it's $10 million less the prior project proposal was 107 million this is
069$97 million and still addresses all of the major components um that the prior uh project proposal did so we did include some preliminary visuals here um we are talking about uh what is currently an entirely wooded lot um that is up closer to our Board of Education Office um addressed to Rena Road and this um would be secured through a land swap agreement with the city of Twinsburg um potentially for the Dodge property so they would get that we would get the woods and the potential building would go there as you can see now for folks to understand the building doesn't change much from our fall uh version of this project it still is prek through six it still has the houses um look to it where it's prek through kindergarten first and second your
070common areas and then third and fourth and fifth and sixth um one advantage um a few advantages to this site uh we can get traffic off of aena road by nearly a quarter mile um so that really benefits any potential backup of parent and car riders um as well as bus traffic and then um we talked about the more uh more potential parking just because the way it's situated it gives us more room um to offer more parking spots so and when we talk about um vacating the athletic um facilities off of the Dodge campus they have to go somewhere so what happens with RBC and the high school campus is that side the other side of Rena Road here um becomes our school and athletic campus so as you can see in front of
071um rbc's building uh the JV and Ninth Grade baseball field would move from behind the high school where it is now over in front of RBC um Hoon softball field would be totally renovated um the football stadium Tiger Stadium would be completely renovated that's bleachers track um Turf lights sound uh concession area locker rooms restrooms all it would be renovated right where it stands um we would renovate the boys uh practice football field and then ladyes soccer um instead of being behind Dodge would move over um right sort of front to back there on the practice football field and we've talked with um coach Garber and the soccer program they're excited about that because it puts them right next to locker room facilities and um again kind of keeps us all on this side of
072Rena road which is nice um so we don't have students uh crossing over a busy street and then behind the high school um boys varsity baseball's particularly excited about this um because we would relocate uh their field behind um the high school campus um we got we had to get tricky uh with the architect on this one because originally superintendent pow had caught that they had the diamond facing into the sun into the sunset so we can't have our batters doing that won't do very well well a lot of lowc scoring games so we flip that around and um if we need to maneuver um our roadway there we can and then we do have um potential to expand uh the parking um by the bus lot there um where kids currently practice for band
073and that so oh here we go okay so another um item that came up quite often um on our fall campaign was what will the Board of Education elect to do with Bissell and Wilcox when those properties are vacated in the new building and to answer that we put together some information um what you're seeing now in Folks at home or if you watch this online is an aerial view of bissell's property and we're pretty excited about the potential here because um we want to allow it to become sort of naturally reclaimed Green Space uh but in that we want to make some intentional Investments and improvements to it as well um picture if um different Parks you've been to that have nature stations or learning Pavilions or learning amphitheaters um picture that but on
074the property at Bissell you'll see a walking path carved through the woods um and you'll also notice that uh area neighborhoods already have walking access um to the playground at Bissell um so we would really build upon the natural foot footprint of Bissell but once the building goes away um we would allow a lot of native plants to sort of regrow themselves that happens naturally um but we've partnered with Cindy Kurt is a teacher at the high school and she has um all kinds of Connections in the nature Arena um this would be funded primarily through grants and area Partnerships um so this isn't built in as a big expense in the project um a lot of things that happen naturally um really aren't that expensive so uh and one more exciting feature about doing
075this at Bissell is that a lot of the wood and natural materials that will be taken from the new construction site can be repurposed right here at Bissell so when you talk about building an Amphitheater or a learning Pavilion they can repurpose the wood that moves from the other site right here um so that's kind of an exciting opportunity to where you're not just losing all of that natural veget ation so and what we envision here is um field trips for our Learners um really community of all ages um can participate and enjoy that facility and then we did not include um a slide yet on Willcox because we're working through some opportunities but as you all know um that building would also come down and we're looking at a couple of different options um
076one might be a fitness Court um that would also be partially Grant funded um that really the community of all ages could also enjoy that as well and lastly um just as part of the tiger Legacy update and for folks at home or if you view this online please take note of the community um educational uh advertisements that we have going on over the next few weeks I would encourage you all to attend one if you can particularly if you have questions or feedback um they will also be live streamed um but really if you can get out and physically attend we'd love to hear any feedback that you have um and that's that's all that I have does anybody have any questions no questions not really but the comments um it was just so
077exciting to hear um Mrs Kurt talk about um ideas for use of these properties and um and she was so worked up in jazzed up about to that you know spread on us and um and it is true this would be something that the whole Community can use and um and then it could be used for um between the schools for field trips and and learning sessions um what I do encourage um the public um because I know this last time we had um the campaign for the ly um there's of course Chatters and rumors on social media on what would happen to this land and oh they're going to sell to builders they're going to sell to developers mixed use that was never discussed right and um if if if you have questions I
078just really encourage you first of all to attend some of these sessions and if you can't attend you can always watch videos another time um call Mr Strickland the board members Miss Powers but um when you see the chatter it spreads like wildfire and most of the time there's little to no fact in that at all so don't depend on social media for your updates and for your you know questions to be answered unless you're on an official social media page like the you know blue r or the lovey committee page but I just really encourage you to ask questions of any of us or um somebody at the board because they'll provide you some factual information and we'll have factual information presented On The Board website too right and I did mean to add
079that everything right now um that's up to date for the tiger Legacy project is on our website if you navigate to the school district's page it's all informational it's all right there all of our new and improved things so thank you thank you so much thank you and I'll turn it over now um to the financial update with our Treasurer Mrs Julia rosn thank you good evening [Music] everyone um so our uh first quarter strategic plan um the first item on it was um for us to work on stabilizing further the district's budget and um in that review I have shared uh the savings that the district has uh occured as a reduction of result of the um expenditure reduction plan that we have implemented a year prior in May 2023 um besides that our
080goal is also at all times to help our budgets by going after additional funds wherever and whenever possible and whenever we see an opportunity and that's not only done by the administrative team but also our staff members and teachers go after opportunities and then in seeking additional funds uh and sources of revenues to improve their classrooms to improve students uh um opportunities uh enhancing learning activities and we then work together in uh spending those funds appropriately to what they have been assigned and also timely reporting back to where the funds have been received so some of those opportunities I have listed here are some grants or awards that will received by our staff members total of $1 from the Twinsburg School foundation for enhancement of learning activities and I have listed the names of our
081um staff members teachers uh Miss Jean Deo for Wilcox and bis BS Clinic uh uh Miss Kelly Lans uh for def culture experience Miss Laura small here helping students make sense of Middle School um and Miss Lauren Wilson power for power of the parkour uh project uh we also received $456 which um Teacher of the Year miss pikney went after um to help her creating a course dedicated to exploring black history um $7,500 was received from Martha holding Jennings Foundation by um Miss Carla H and Rebecca weer um for um join George Milbourne team teaching award so that was an award but it came with some funding um at Dodge and then $10,000 was a uh gar uh Grant Foundation um received by uh Mr uh Socrates and Miss Abigail Todd for the Brewing abilities
082at the high school Cafe um Mrs Powers would you like to step in and help me with describing any of these projects that we have seen in the buildings well absolutely so um you know we spoke earlier today about the U magic gives back and the foundation and uh the $14,000 uh um in award dollars uh from the grants that those staff members wrote last spring um really were Innovative practices and just so you know board every um spring uh Community Focus does um produce a show for us on twins School today which features our grant awards from the foundation and so they are working on that now and so you'll see that in the month months of April and May I believe so looking forward uh to learning a lot about what the teachers
083use those dollars for in their classrooms um and of course we all know of the fine work that Mrs pinky does with um her uh black voices and literature course at Twinsburg High School um Mrs house and Mrs Widner have been very busy at um Dodge I mentioned in the report about the equity stiring committee the calendar well that actually started as a seed planted by Mrs hos and Mrs Wier at Dodge and now it has blossomed into an effort across the district so they've been investing their monies into um um some awesome projects with respect to diversity inclusion um e and Equity over at the Dodge building and then of course um this one is really exciting at the high school and as a matter of fact Mr socres and Mrs Todd just submitted
084their second application to the gar Foundation I think within the last week maybe um and the Brewing abilities Cafe um helps our students with disabilities learn some vocational skills because what they do is they have a coffee cart and they sell coffee and pastries to the Twinsburg High School staff and that was funded through the gar foundation so students are learning vocational skills and our high school staff is getting a little tree u in in the same time so um so many different and unique ways that our staff has sought resource dollars to do these very cool projects with our students thank you for your help um so other opportunities that we went after um is a recent Grant submission by Mr Strickland um for $ 56,331 the funds have not yet been received I
085do want to underline that but uh we're hoping that we will have it and then at that time we'll report out on it um Mr stri would you like to share anything about your grand submission sure I do want to say too that um primarily uh Bor and residents um we do if I ever brag on anything that administrators do in Twinsburg City School District we are really aggressive with grant funding if we see it um we are all over it and superintendent power sends us opportunities at lots of odd hours of the night 3:00 a.m. on Saturday can we talk about this next week I'm like absolutely let's do it let's do it now let's talk about it now no I'm kidding um but superintendent powers and I have been investigating um and the
086board is aware of these Technologies as well um there are companies that sell wearable Panic alerts for staff um that can allow uh police and fire and administrators to be noticed uh notified in real time of an emergency in the building um so we're looking at those and then a really cool new ai ai technology that's uh built into your security cameras is weapons detection and it detects the shape of a weapon and it's constantly monitoring all of your cameras in the district um so the police have had this software through flock cameras um for years and now it's making its way into um smaller systems like ours um so even if um it's something if it's not a day that we do metal detection or something like that it can pick up on shapes
087on a camera feet um so we're hoping to pair these funds uh with funds from our last wave of security grant funding um so you could uh start seeing this kind of technology in our schools so thank you so much for your help with that um another uh opportunity we went after is Mr bandiera uh submitted for excess cost reimbursement of a special it's partial reimbursement tiny part but we still go after it um of um District special cost um for students who are placed into our district by um different orders such as court orders or Foster uh care so we don't have any funds received yet and that's a big um pocket that so many schools in Ohio go after and depending how many schools apply and how many students there where um the
088money will be um sent back to us probably at some point in late April or May and we will report out to that but I wanted to share that we do go after every opportunity that we possibly can um also um I don't think that we have um talked about um our school district uh joining different consortiums at different times so I have a slide here um which shows the savings that we are inuring um this was during 23 24 school year and I do realize it is kind of behind at this point in time however we are now in 2425 school year we don't close this year until July beginning of July next year so these reports do just recently came out from um Ohio school council so again the district has been partnered
089with the Ohio school council I don't think that we have presented such type of information before um and it shows like just little bit shy of $4,000 our savings close to $700,000 for that specific school year because we do get some reduced rates when we partner with um such uh um institutions such as the Ohio school council and when we have other opportunities we have other um partners for Consortium such as our ITC technology Center uh from kyoga Falls neonet uh when we purchase Chromebooks um uh laptops things like that we will share those with you but at this point in time we wanted to share this information with everyone um another opportunity is as you uh board know you do um as the treasurer and give me the task to invest the district funds
090and go after every single opportunity that is out there for us so keep track so uh for the last s months um including this January from last July I have in front of you the interest that we went after by investing our funds that we have in liquid monies and Investments um to maximize our Returns on those funds when uh we have them before they're being spent so that's about $714,000 at this point in time for the year so um our second goal for the finance strategic plan uh was to go after and find um inventory electronic inventory system to move away having the district um assets on spreadsheets and manually being tracked so we did we do have an Eis system for the district Capital assets we had launched it we had uploaded many
091and many spreadsheets as you can imagine we do have a lot of five school buildings and one Board office and all the school buses and the bus garage and it's every single chair and table and it's just a lot but um we are very happy to be where we are uh with the new system I would like to underline again it cost us nothing because we are using the state software for our payroll system and for our accounting software and basically this inventory system comes with that same package so it was out there and available for us so just we're just going basically after the opportunity to uh use it and implement it so um on the next two slides I just have a couple screenshots from for you from the system this is how
092the system looks we can um we have the ability to add different filters to it different sorting but everything is listed um in the system um as such and then this is a screen of where we are able to add uh large items individually um as we purchase more as the year goes by uh but then we're also as I mentioned we're able to and um it's more beneficial to upload many things if we have those spreadsheets for our assets created to meet the requirements of this system which then it will take it uh through an upload and the last Financial goal um for the second quarter um it is to um keep everybody informed uh regarding the T tiger Legacy project and financing um when time comes for it so I wanted to share
093here the amounts of the tiger Legacy project Mr Strickland has talked in detail about um what the plan is with it and we have here some numbers for everyone to share um it came down $10 million uh compared to the previous $107 million and that's um mostly because of the athletic fields are not um in need at this point in time to be moved um so $97 million 3.84 Mills for a 36-year term with with an estimated interest rate of 5% the estimated annual cost to the property owner is $135 per $100,000 of raised property value by Summit County and that's all I have at this point in time thank you so much for your attention any questions I don't have a question Julia but just quick comment um with estimated annual cost um 1
09435 worth stressing and you you have it on here that that's per year because I know sometimes people confuse that and think it's per month but that's actually the annual cost so on this slide we do have a per year amount because that's what the county provides MH however in our community presentations we we are sharing now and starting tomorrow the per month cost so it's a little bit easier for um our community members to understand then and compare it to their budget to their monthly budget because basically everything is paid basically monthly mostly so um we did that but here we do have a per year amount thank you yes thank you thanks great thank you so much okay and so um thank you for your attention about the Strategic plan just another thing
095Board of Education as you know at the last meeting you authorized a contract with Dr Lisa Regal to assist us in the rewrite of the Strategic plan um she met today virtually with members of the central Office Team and she will soon be connecting with you she would like to speak with you each individually about your aspirations for the district moving forward so expect that she will be sending an email to you uh soon to schedule those uh conversations with her thank you so that's moving along as well all right our next um presentation this evening is by our director of people services Mr Ryan bandier and Mrs um Davis heard a little bit about this during the policy subcommittee meeting last week um we've received some new direction from the Department with respect to
096our special ed M policies and procedures and this evening Mr Vanier is here to explain that to you evening thank you m Powers thank you board um as Mrs pow quickly shared on our special education model policies and procedures there's some new guidance from the Department of Education and Workforce regarding um what our district requirement is for this um so I'm going to really quick highlight this um there's there's lots and lots of documents that go along with this but I will um enter house to my office but I'll explain more of that as we go tonight um as you can see here um there was an an recent update to the um from the Ohio Department of Education at Workforce regarding the model policies and procedures um which really included changes to the operating
097standards for special education um these changes were made in um 2024 and as part of that um our new requirement is to um buy this March um seek board approval of that we're going to follow these model policies and procedures and kind of adopt the standards um that are written in the Ohio Operating standards for special education um in addition to this um renewal that we're or approval that we're going to be seeking here shortly there's also going to be um kind of an annual um approval that this is the policies and model um practices we're going to be following kind of year out so this be not the first time I probably talk with you there's going to be kind of an annual um annual re um Reas for this to be approved every
098year um some information about this so later on this evening um and as Mrs Davis heard last week um board policy um 2460 is our special education policy and N oops sorry Jen I lost it um but through that recent policy um there was a um and the policy subcommittee met and there's some um small revisions to this policy thank you um that talk about the special education um some of the very small um requirements are that we will serve all students um with disabilities from ages 3 to 21 years old um including students who may have been um suspended expelled or maybe retained in um for a grade so those are the little changes there and then um the other part of the policy that was changed is um the district has the option
099of selecting um to either adopt the model policies as adopted by the state of Ohio um Department of Education and Workforce or to create our own policy um I could tell you I don't know of anyone that's creating their own right now um I don't recommend it and I think our legal council would not recommend that but um but there is the option to go out and create your own policy um I'll get into that a little bit more a little bit more in um detail a little bit here um so with that the operating standards um for education of children with disabilities um was updated and has um there's a few different changes um typically this happens roughly every five years um changes May more occur more frequently when um there's big changes um
100to kind of our guiding law which is the individ ual disabilities Education Act or Ida um in the review process the department seeks out um lots of different feedback they have um work sessions they have um focus groups uh they have time to meet with um State different stakeholders including parents administrators teachers um trying to listen to everyone um lots of legal councils involved as well making sure that these changes are in line with any of the new federal regulations that um seem to change quite frequently as we move forward um there's a quick summary here there's lots of different changes um but there really was not a lot of substantive changes I'm May highlight some of these um in your packet you have today you'll see some of these changes as well um kind
101of summarized um but I'll May highlight just a couple of the big changes that were um from the operating standards um one of the big changes and when you change it in one place it comes across probably about 10 different other places because you you change it in one area and it affects multiple things but the biggest change um was there was a recent um law passed a couple years ago that um changed the ident the um definition of developmental delay um developmental delay was um previously almost just a preschool um identification category it was a category that was from ages 3 to 5 years old um and they changed that to um allow it to be for students 3 to 9 years old so saying that maybe a student has a delay in their
102communication or adaptive skills or um physical skills um that has now carried on to up to 9 years old and we're we've been doing that for the past year and a half now and we're still um kind of figuring out how that how that kind of looks and what the definition is of that development delay um but that was a big change um when you change it here obviously you're changing it in the transportation section and the related Services section so it's changed probably about 30 different times throughout the document as you as you would see um there's some quick revisions to um the role of a surrogate parent um as Mrs RN was talking about earlier um we do have a lot of students in the district or some students in the district who
103are under um foster care maybe a court placement and it's very important for us to use those surrogate parents um to help out making some those educational decisions for um some of those families um there's some timelines defined um there was always a um timeline in terms of you know what is a it was always um spelled out as a reasonable amount of time when a student moves into your District um to transfer a document to your District um now they've pretty much um laed out for us and told us that that's about 30 days is that reasonable amount of time to make sure that we're considering you know accepting a evaluation from another District or trans or um completing our own evaluation on a student um there were some title changes so vocational special
104educator or what they used to call vosis um they've taken away that language and they've changed it with um kind of a more vague definition but someone that possesses the proper credentials or skills and knowledge to provide vocational training um so there's a they don't want us to use the word vocational special Educators anymore um they've amended some language regarding preschool ratios and integrated classroom ratios um and then there was a full summary of this um Miss Marsha Spence our um special education um supervisor coordinator um she helped provide this at our curriculum and Technology meeting back in January but also in your packet at the very end you'll see kind of a full summary of the most recent changes for the operating standards um in addition to that I did it again I don't
105know why I don't know why I keep doing it's it's getting it's getting tired um um so as I mentioned the district is electing to um adopt the model policies we're not trying to write our own um we're trying to you know adopt the policies that were approved by the state and recommended for us um but in doing so also um this allows us to continue using all the forms that we're very our families are very familiar with our staff's very familiar with um this includes the IEP form the individualized education program form evaluation team report um prior end notices and and parent invitations just to name a few um I would be happy if we choose to adopt this policy and not have to create those forms from scratch so um but we would
106appreciate that um as you consider that this evening um and then a copy of um all these policies and procedures um our house in my office my office is at the Twinsburg High School um we would have those available to anyone who has any questions or um wants to see any of those policies or documents um and that's the end of my presentation kind of a quick summary of that um again you will see the first reading tonight of the board um the new board policy regarding this um and then we will have we'll be submitting that um with board approval to the end at the end of March um to the Department of Education and Workforce and here's my information if anyone has any question thanks for all the work thank you thanks Mr
107band here um Board of Education the last report here is actually very short but I wanted to introduce um the ex IIT that you would hopefully um authorize this evening under K9 and this is our fact sheet with respect to the teller Legacy project um remember that the the rules with respect to a a campaign for a bond issue is very restrictive what the school district can and can't do or say um but it does allow an opportunity for Boards of Education to authorize a fact sheet that provides um information about the the project that we can then uh share with our residents um families staff members Etc and so just to go over this a little bit um I believe um Mr Strickland mentioned this in his presentation but really the gist behind um
108this revised tiger Legacy project is that we listen to the community um in the last uh Bond Levy uh campaign um while um we weren't campaigning for or against the bond Mr Strickland and I and Mr sck um Mrs rosn were out practically every night of the week um sharing information factual information about the project and during those conversations with our resident staff members um Etc uh we gleaned a lot of information about uh what folks thought about the project um losing that Bond Levy by 431 votes wasn't a great amount of um um negativity about the project um given the presidential election but we did hear what folks had to say and so in this rewrite of the Legacy project we want to make sure that our community understands that we heard them and
109so uh Matt mentioned earlier and I'm not going to repeat what he read or what he presented but in the darker blue box at the top are um four important bullet points that we keep talking about things that we heard in uh our time uh talking about the initial Tire Legacy project and that in this particular revised version we have addressed these things and so um Matt introduced the community conversations that will be um starting this Thursday evening at the high school um I hope we have a lot of folks come out because we can give uh greater uh diligence to all of the changes that are now in this project and the reasons for the changes and how we arrived uh at these changes as well um what does the levy include this the
110important part of this uh bond issue is the construction of a new uh preschool through uh six Elementary School um Matt indicated it looks similar to the rendering of the initial Tire Legacy project but I want to remind our families listening and uh catching this on um the live stream that the design of the school does not happen until a school Community passes their bond issue and so this is a rendering and um should the uh bond issue pass in May quickly thereafter and probably much quicker than it would have been in the initial version of tiger Legacy because we're not moving anything to construct this building this is this is untouched land that this will be built on it'll have to of course you know be cleared um but the design process will begin
111even quicker than it would have under the initial uh uh uh plan and so we really do want as much input in the design of this building as we possibly can gather and we continue to listen we continue to hear what you uh the residents are saying and so um the construction of the prek 6 school and the design of that school is going to be built on what folks want it to look like and so please Community understand that um it's all about modernizing the learning environment for our students and making sure that they are learning in an environment and our staff is teaching in an environment that is supportive that is um very secure uh you know we visited a couple of elementary schools in the fall and summer of last uh calendar
112year and we have lots of ideas about security enhancements but sometimes you can't retrofit the buildings that we have so this will give us an opportunity to build new and to include security enhancements um that are important to keep our students and our staff safe and more than anything else the the big change to this project is this amazing partnership with the city of Twinsburg and the land swap agreement um that will provide this property for the new school and in turn the city of Twinsburg will then take own parip of the Dodge campus in its entirety and so this is an amazing partnership this collaboration is just Monumental and we uh both the city officials as well as the Board of Education District Administrative team is very um excited about forging this moving forward
113um and we believe that this will mean great things for not just the school district not just the city but for everybody and we look forward to sharing those um details moving forward uh we since this is focusing on the new elementary school and is that is the focus of the project is to build a new school but of course we're cognizant of the fact that our athletic facilities are in need of repair heard loud and clear that we weren't going to build a new um Tiger Stadium we weren't going to uh build uh athletic facilities across the street at the Dodge property but we must pay attention to the fact that we have highly competitive Sports here in our community our facilities need to meet the standards of our students our students ex you
114know perform exceedingly well in athletics we want to make sure that the facil will provide the environment that they can use to do that kind of great um effort and so uh we will be moving the facilities around as Matt indicated in his presentation this evening U details are also on this fact sheet you know the challenges are our buildings are not getting any younger they continue to age just like our homes you have to take care of things we have taken care of things but the buildings and our facilities continue to age the ofcc report was clear 66 um uh four of our five building um are are in the need of renovation and so we really need to pay attention to that things are not getting any cheaper rising cost imagine um you
115know what we paid for utilities a few years ago versus what we're paying for them today and so we have to be aware that the costs continue to rise and of course again the athletic facilities Tiger Stadium is a fantastic place but it is starting to fail us because the track again needs to be repaired here in the spring before um track season begins and our turf at the stadium um is um coming to the point that it's going to end its lifespan and when that happens we worry about students getting concussions we worry about students tripping on the turf there are a lot of things that can happen when you don't have um the right kind of turf on that field and so with this project that that Turf will be fully replaced um
116track would be fully replaced bleachers locker rooms weight room um you name it it'll be part of the project at a price of about 4 million so um those are important things that are part of this project that we want to make make clear to the community it is not a new stadium but it is a fully renovated stadium in the space that it currently resides Mrs rosnah mentioned the financial details but just for again uh for the sake of those listening this is a maximum term of 36 years at an estimated interest rate of 5% it is 3.84 Ms and it will cost the homeowner of a $100,000 home of a property value approximately $135 a year this QR code board um goes right to the tiger Legacy project page on the website we
117have updated the FAQs there um so anyone who was looking for updated information and as we move forward we'll continue to update that information um but with your approval this evening uh this fact sheet will be distributed to our families through my weekly update and then it'll be set for distribution at that point as well any questions no just comment um you were talking about the turf and yeah that that definitely is going to it's due and it's lifespan is pretty much over um soon and some of the things you mentioned whether we were to move forward with a a levy or not these are things that are still due to be they're they're just going to have to get done one way or another so um the turf the the track um and then
118you mentioned something about utilities cost going up um it's just exci and think about with the new building how we could be saving in upgrades and new um technology and things with with um our utilities but um but what regardless our you know our schools and the properties are in need of definitely much need Renovations thank you for your time thank Youk you um just real quick um I just got some EXC news first is regarding the um black history program one of my U one of our neighbors in nordon attended and said that the program was excellent um so nice to hear um regarding that and then um just got word that the lady Tigers uh won so they're moving on um 56 to 22 oh so awesome job nice all right now next
