Okay, >> we'll call the Tuesday, May 12th, 2026 meeting to order. We could rise for the pledge, and my new friend Max is going to lead us. >> All right, >> let's do this. >> All right, go ahead. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it singers one nation under all indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> All right. Uh roll call. Mrs. Lavallet >> Hman >> here. Nelson >> Here >> Mrs. >> here is our superintendent Dr. Brooks. >> Okay. And are there any public comments pertaining to any agenda items? There are none. >> Okay. We'll move to the recognition of students and staff. And Mr. Pel, you're up. >> You Max talk about you. Want to come stand next to me?

All right. So, this is my buddy Max, and we're here tonight to recognize Max because the Indiana Department of Education partnered with the National Math Stars to recognize exceptional math talent across the state. >> My buddy Max here, >> I'm really good at math. >> You're a great math. Max is in the top 2% of Indiana third graders, >> and he didn't apply for this. They looked at his island checkpoint scores, and they found him. Um, Max, I knew on day one that Max was probably unlike any other kid I'd ever met. >> He is so smart and he is super kind and energetic and friendly as you all know. Um, and last year in December, I talked to Mr. Beam, our middle school math teacher, and I m middle school principal, and I was

like, "Mr. Beam, we need to get Max upstairs for some math." And so Max, since last spring has been going upstairs to Mrs. Fischer's class and taking math eight. He took it last spring and then he started over this fall. Finished math eight. He's got a great grade in that class. And um >> he goes up there every day with Mrs. Trevette and she's been learning math eight right along. >> What's the thing? >> What was my grade like in letters? >> Oh, I can't tell you before another week and a half. But you're doing good. Okay. All right. And then next year, Max is going to be heading over to the high school and he's going to take algebra 1 with Mr. Vanabundy. And we actually got to go meet Mr. Vandabunty today. So

I'm very excited >> after lunch. >> Max, how old are you? >> Nine. >> Max, >> actually Well, just just for reference, Max's um NWA math math growth score is at 246. >> Um that is considered the low end of high average for high school seniors. I'm literally at 12 grade level. You are the chart actually. That's crazy. It's awesome. The chart actually stops at 263. So he is >> over there to the max >> max. >> So Max, Dr. Brooks actually has something for you. >> Max. >> Okay. First we have a medal. Okay. >> It's a national mad star. I'm gonna put this panel around you. Okay, you get that. Also, the school board wanted to give you this star >> says Max Cannon National Math Star nominee 2026 top 2% of third

grade math students. Well, Max, can we get a picture of you with the school board? >> Yes. >> Huh? A gabble? >> Yeah. We're going to come over by you. >> It looks like a little fancy hammer. >> It is. >> Yeah. National store and also it's like oh dang cool little >> big we're gonna look at this is lavallet in the back >> smile >> 10 tall Nice. >> Very good. >> No more. >> And uh >> yeah, we really appreciate you coming back. >> Yeah. Uh we have uh members from the Heburn Education Foundation here tonight. I want to introduce some Tom Carroll, uh Sue Fransman, Joela Dup Prey, um Janice Ellison, Veronica Mccay, and Lynn Fasel are representing the education foundation tonight. We have, you know, every year about this time we

give out grants that um, you know, are for our teachers and our kids. And so tonight kind of culminates and >> we wanted to kind of share a little bit here about each of these grants. So when I call your name, come on up. We have a certificate for you and if you can just say one brief thing about your grant. If you don't want to, I might be able to say. So, let's start with Dana Gails. Dana, kindergarten teacher. Um, she wrote a grant called Kindergarten Read Aloud. >> I read to my children every day and one of the most critical things we can do for our kids as growing up to help their reading skills. and my library was outdated and I applied for a grant to update my library. So, I am

so thrilled. Thank you. >> You've only been here for a couple WEEKS all together. Thank you. >> All right, we've got Caitlyn Proper also from the FCCLA National Convention. If uh somebody doesn't know what FCCLE is, I know Caitlyn will talk about that. >> Thank you. >> It's actually a relatively new program for the school. >> Yeah. Right. Yeah. >> So, uh this is our fourth year, I believe, for FCCLA and this is the third year we've made it to nationals. Um so, this grant was written to help with the cost of nationals. Usually, every year, um it's in a different part of the country. So this year it's in BC and we have two national um qualifiers and then we have another student who is evaluating other students there um and modeling for one

of our designers um and so it's very expensive to go between hotel costs and flights and meal and all of that. So the grant was to help kind of like alleviate some of that cost. >> And who do you have here tonight from FCC? So, two of the three um participants were able to come. The other one's at the softball game playing so she couldn't come. Um but this is Cass Potter. she is um in the fashion design competition and so she designed created a pattern and then made a garment entirely from scratch and has a whole like um >> thank you fashion label for it. It's really cool. Um and then Lily is going to be our evaluator and then she's also going to model. >> Great. Thank you. Neil Strubal, athletic trainer, received

a grant for functional movement screening kits. >> So, the functional movement screening kits are some boards in balance boards to use in class with exercise science students and athletic training to help watch and how athletes move to pick up any limitations or where they're not flexible. we can try and prevent injuries and then with the exercise science they can learn for career. >> How many exercise science students are we gonna have next year? >> Um I got another one added. So I think I'm about 21 between first years and second years. >> That program has grown quite a bit since you started. So >> yes and they are all Hebrin except for three boom rope. That's great. Stephanie Locket, middle school esports equipment. Something we've needed since day one. >> So, thanks for taking this

on. >> So, um, esports is relatively um, a new and rising thing. It is actually a club that is ran through the state of Indiana. Um, and it's video games for the kids. It gives um students who don't normally have an opportunity to join extracurriculars to be able to join. We play different schools throughout the entire state of Indiana. Um we play at the club level right now. High school is playing at the varsity level. Students are earning college scholarships based upon esports now. So um it's really important that we get this off the ground and going in the middle school. Christy Stevens for photography and videography equipment. >> Thank you. >> Um, basically one of the major changes coming down um, our students have been doing a lot of photography but also creating videos

and things like that. They usually do that from their phones and they're not allowed to do that anymore um, during the school day. So, this will give them an opportunity to still um, improve those skills. We'll use it with media club. And then I'm also excited that we have exploratory courses coming next year and I'm going to get to teach photography in that respect too. >> We have Abby Gave and Brandy Parks. They wrote a grant together for the UFly assessment plan. >> Okay. Um for a number of years we've been teaching you in kindergarten first or second grade and it's based on science of reading which has been adopted throughout Indiana and it's um it helps students learn to read and spell and write and one thing that's been challenging is for us to

um identify which students need which areas sizes and so this um project green AI up to come up with this tool that allows you to scan the students assessments and it will help make your smaller for you. That way we can make sure that the right students are doing the right targeted >> Steve Wenacher for his bamboo lab 3D printer. I think we all know that Mr. Wacher >> Mr. Wenacher loves the 3D printing. >> So just a little bit. Yeah, actually I'm currently exc one printer. We currently have three. The printer will be 10 times faster than those three. Plus, this printer will be able to do four colors and expand up to 16 different colorations. So, the kids uh go on to this program called Tinkercad and they create their own 3D designs.

Our current printers cannot print them adequately. This will allow that. >> Last but not least, Stephanie Hovan and Michelle Hall. They wrote a grant for individual health care plans. And I'm gonna help you with this. Thank you. >> I'm not um they, you know, if you've ever been in the elementary to see an the office in the elementary just for um the number of students that come in. It is it it is a busy office and um you know there's a lot of planning that goes into the health every single day for students. So, this software system is going to help them with time, but it's also going to individualize these plans that have to be very detailed for some of our kids that have some different medical needs. And um so it's, you know,

it'll streamline a lot of processes, but it'll help keep our kids safe. So, we really appreciate that. Thank you for writing this gives me more time to get better students for Thank you. One thing I want to say about this group, this group behind the scenes, they're working tirelessly and I I'm not kidding. They are working so hard to raise money for this. You know, Hein Schools Education Foundation started in 2016. Dr. Blank, who was one of our school board members, gave $30,000, basically kept all the money that he had from being on our school board and helped start this foundation. The foundation is just blossoming under the leadership of this group. dad too. >> Was that it just um you know the daddy daughter dance all of the all of the things that go

into all the the the inind donations from people that we're receiving is amazing. So, you know, I'm able to just kind of help them. I'm not really on the board, but I help. And um it's they've been so great to work with. And you know, if you you ever think about anything that you want to donate, the Hebrin Schools Education Foundation does this. This is what they do and more. This is just one thing. Um, these grants. So, um, I can't thank you all enough. And I know not everybody can be here tonight. Thank you for all the work you've done. Colle >> I need the shirt on >> because I always like >> maybe I am Turn >> on the chair. >> Then he wouldn't be in the picture. Don't let her fall. >>

All right, everyone. >> Just got five. Hope everyone's smiling. >> Thank you. Thanks for that. Everybody's in there. >> Yeah, >> everybody's eyes are open. >> Well, that's another story. the only one lasting. >> All right. Thank you. >> Sure. >> Okay. >> Uh we'll go back to the uh agenda here. So, additions or deletions to the agenda. Mrs. Lavallet, everything good? Consent agenda. You want to break that out, Jeff? >> Uh consent agenda. We have the minutes from the regular board meeting. We have the claims from April. Also, the revenue report and the personnel report, which personnel report has quite a bit on it. We do have one person here tonight that will introduce. >> Okay. >> All right. So, I'll entertain a motion to accept the consent agenda as submitted and recommended by

Dr. Brooks. I >> make a motion to accept. >> I'll second. Any discussion? All those in favor signify by by saying I. I. >> Opposed. Motion passes. >> This time I would like to introduce someone. Um actually Allison, would you like to introduce? >> It would be my pleasure. >> It is my pleasure to introduce you to Meredith Dames. She is be our Native High School athletic director. Would you like to tell the board just a little bit about yourself? I can. Um, my name is D. I grew up in North Grammy High School, went to IU University Bloomington for four years, got my undergrad there, and then I also went to Bel University. Got my masters there in athletic administration. I've been working at high schools around the area, kind of making my way

up, and now I've been offered a great job as the athletic director there. So, we're excited to bring some good ideas here and get started here. >> Congrats. >> Congratulations. >> Okay. Uh the agenda, uh new business. >> Yeah. Uh new we have some overnight field trips. We've got a cross country team that uh would like to go to a camp in Bloomington. a cross country camp in the summer and then our also our wrestling team has been taking a um they've been going to a wrestling team camp at Turkey Run in October. >> Okay. Uh entertain a motion to uh accept the overnight field trips for the cross country team and the wrestling team. >> I'll make a motion to accept the overnight field trips. >> I'll second that motion. >> Okay, there's a

motion and a second. Is there any other discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I opposed. Same sign. Motion passes. >> Next is donations. We've got many donations here for groups. We've got some donations for our baseball team, softball team, basketball, um track, and the FCCLA. So, we'd like to approve these donations as well. >> Okay. I'll entertain a motion to approve the donations as made to the baseball, softball, basketball, track, and FCCLA. >> I'll make it. >> I'll make the motion to accept the donation. >> I'll second. >> Okay. Is there any further discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. Opposed. Motion passes. Next item is the recommendation for unlicensed assisted personnel support. This is for a bit of a pay bump for people that we have

that can help assist students on field trips or in other activities that may have certain health concerns that we are unable to send a nurse to. And so there there's some training that they would go through, but this would be a pay bump of $2 per hour while they are at this function, whatever it is. And it would also help us keep a licensed nurse here on campus for the majority of the time for of the other students that are on campus that day. >> Okay. uh entertain a motion to accept the unlicensed assisted assistive personnel support. >> I'll make a motion to accept the unlicensed assistive personnel support. >> I'll second that motion. >> Any further discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. Opposed. Motion passes. >> Next item of

new business is a recommendation to make an alteration to some of our substitute bus driver pay. If you have seen our bus driver fleet, they're not getting any younger and it becomes very difficult to find subd drivers. It's very hard to find a driver these days. So, um we do have some drivers that are retiring and willing to help sub. This recommendation is to keep these drivers at their current rate when they sub. Some of them are higher than our current sub rate of $16 an hour and um we would like to have them continue to help us. There are some parameters around this. They would have to sub at least 10 times per year to continue that rate, but I do think that the drivers that we currently have that are looking to retire

are um willing to help us if we had a more competitive rate. Entertain a motion to accept the substitute bus driver pay for retired or resigned bus drivers only. >> Motion to approve the substitute bus driver pay. >> A second. >> Any other discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion passes. Lastly, it's kind of hard to think about this, but we're uh I'm making a recommendation for the 2027 2028 school calendar. There are a lot of people that want to plan graduations and and their lives around this even two years out. So, our calendar has typically gone with the rest of portality just simply because of all the shared services that we have. This calendar is very similar to other South County schools and um I'm making a

recommendation for this 2027 2028 school year calendar which that year the first day of school would be August 11th and the last day of school is before Memorial Day which would be May 24th. >> Okay. Entertain a motion to accept the 2728 school calendar. >> I'll make a motion to accept the 2027 2028 school calendar. >> I'll second that motion. >> Any further discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. Opposed. Motion passes. >> Administrators, you're up. >> So, you know, I always like to start with our Hawks Pride. So, four students were recognized in the month of April and we have already recognized four students this month in May. And just for fun, because I wanted to know for myself, I added up all the students we've positively recognized this year

and the total is 95 students and two teachers for this school year. So, um I hope that the students and their parents have appreciated this and enjoyed it as much as I have. Um talking to the kids and recognizing them. And my favorite thing to do is call the parents because of course when they hear from me they always think that it's something negative but when I can say it's positive um and make their day telling them something good their kids that it makes my day. So that was exciting. On Wednesday, April 29th, we have our spring choir concert with the middle school and we are looking forward to hopefully welcoming 17 freshmen to join our high school choir because we need it. So I hope they all join. Uh spring testing is well underway.

So many have taken the biology I learn test and juniors and seniors have done their AP exams in biology, literature, statistics, US history and calculus. And we actually have our last AP exam tomorrow in its language. Last week we recognized teachers for teacher appreciation week and I just want to extend my thank you to all of you for the wonderful pesto's lunch on Monday. That was very kind and appreciated. Our school musical, School of Rock, took place over the weekend and it was a great production. If you didn't see it, it was super fun. And Jacob Lampre played Jack Black like to a tea. It was amazing. >> Yeah, it was so good. >> So, so proud of those kids and just coming, you know, seeing them in their elements and involving the elementary and

middle school kids. It was great. Um, we're getting down to the wire. Senior academic awards, finals, and graduation are the last big things we have happening at the high school and then will be summer. And last but not least, I just want to welcome Meredith and tell her how happy we are to have her on board and on our team. >> Oh, hi Mr. Beam. >> Oh, thank you. >> You're welcome. >> Uh tomorrow night, we have our final middle school band concert uh starting at 7 o' Eastern Le. Uh our again our middle school choir joined the high school choir a couple weeks ago uh for their performance. It was great to hear uh the many talented singers we have and the music program in the middle school. Uh I learn testing wrapped up

last week. We have NWA testing this week. Um bunch of culminating activities here going on in the middle school with the wax museum in sixth grade seventh grade and Shark Tank for eighth grade. So it's good to see um some different things going on besides the normal uh school days that we have. um and different activities. And eighth grade awards for us is two weeks from tonight at 5:30 on the front lawn or the middle school gym depending on the weather. And sixth and seventh graders have their last day awards on the last or their academic awards on the last day of school. And welcome. >> Thank you. >> All right, we are in our second round of iid for the year. Uh it's the first summer administration. um third graders and a few second

graders have their second opportunity right now. And so Mrs. Droo has been working really hard with those kiddos since March. Um and we're anxiously anticipating their scores within the next few days um hopefully get us back uh over 95%. Um I learn scores won't be out until summer, but um our iLearn science scores came in a few percentage points higher than last year. Uh so Mr. Winmaker who got the 3D printer has been working very hard with our fourth graders on those standards. Uh wanted to reach out and and thank Carrie McKay um who is officially officially retiring after the school year. She retired three years ago, but she's been coming back temporarily for us. Um her smile and positivity are going to be really hard to replace. Um if you ever need a pickme

up, just go talk to Krie McCay because her smile is infectious. Um, and then I wanted to take the opportunity to say something positive about the person sitting to my left. So, Mrs. Mrs. Whit, as you all know, uh, is very quick to share positivity about other people, and I would like to share some about her. >> Um, I am very careful with the things that I ask Mrs. Wit to do because I know that if I ask Mrs. Wit to do something, she's going to put 1 million% into everything that she does. Um, and she's going to have sleepless nights and early mornings and Sundays when her car is in that parking lot and nobody else is here where she is going to put everything she has into what she does. And this goes

beyond just things that I ask her to do. She does this for each one of her students. If you wanted to know anything about any one of her students, she could diagnose where they struggle, where they succeed, um, and how she is going to better serve them better than any diagnostician I have ever met. >> Thank you. >> And she was able to put together with the help of Mrs. Height a phenomenal touch a truck event. >> It was amazing. It was >> one of Max's lines. >> It was. and the dedication that she put into that touch a truck was very evident. She is persistent. Um the receptionist at Family Express knows her very well and but they came through for us and ended up distributing 500 cookies and bottles of water to our

students. >> Uh we had 16 trucks. >> Yes, >> 16 trucks. And we got through with the weather last Tuesday. It wasn't bad, >> but the kids just had a blast. And even our fifth graders who are definitely too full for school right now uh were talking about how exciting it was and fun to see all these cool trucks. Everything from monster truck golf carts to cement mixers. We had a custom semi there. The town key brought a front loader. All sort our secretary rode her tractor in for work that day. >> 40 minutes on the road. >> So it was that was huge. was great. >> The fire department provided some fire equipment um as well as some firefighters to demonstrate it for the kids. It was just a great day and I think

it's a great testament um not only to the work that Mrs. Whit puts into special events um and Mrs. Hike as well, but also to the work she does every day for every >> that's it. Comments that >> Oh, okay. Yeah, looks like Mrs. Gells dipped out. So, uh, Mrs. Gells, um, who's a kindergarten teacher, right? Been here a little while. Uh, left a comment here and I'll just read it what she says. She says, "The members of of Pepsi would like to thank everyone for making teacher appreciation so fun and special. It was very appreciated." So, that was Dana Gells. Okay. Superintendent. Um, one person on the personnel report that was not here that I'd like to mention and that we will have at a future meeting is Jerry Bechal. Jerry Beal has announced

his retirement. he has uh put a lot of time into Heburn students here and um you know we all know Jerry and we know some of the background with with him and know his ups and downs but just you know can't thank him enough for all the years he's g and um I know at the June probably the June or July meeting we'll have him come in and recognize him so he's here quite a while and just have enjoyed talking with him on his long career here. So like to you know that I thought teacher appreciation week was phenomenal. Heard a lot of great comments from that. The pestos was was great. The coffee truck was was a great day. So, um just overall a positive week and hopefully we can get graduation off. Um

we won't have any issues this year. Hopefully, >> you weren't here for it last year. >> Keep it cool in there, right? Yeah. So, >> but um excited for the future here at Hebrin. Very excited about um the hiring of Meredith. I've had a lot of uh a lot of people say a lot of positive things that you wouldn't know so >> when I mention your name. >> So, um thank you for accepting the position. >> That's that's it for my end. I've done a lot of talking >> and I got a long drive. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Any board comments? >> Go ahead. I've got a few things done, but you go first. >> Yep. Just wanted to say to the administrators, another year down, way to go. >> It's been a great year.

It's been quiet for us. >> So, thank you. And if we don't see you, enjoy your summer. So, >> so few things. I'll start with told Mr. Bean when we walked in here that I've talked to some of the former students I run into at work. I think everybody's excited the buzz with golf. So, >> awesome. We're super excited for that. There's a lot of people, even fans reached out to you. They're already buzzing about golf here. >> Um, did you say Jacob was Jack Black? >> I watched play twice. My wife's here three times because our niece was in it. Enjoyed it. I mean, that dude was absolutely phenomenal. Like, I was like stalking him in the hallway just to give him a high five, tell him how good he was. Then we went

home and watched uh the school of rock which I've never watched and my nieces were in amazing the play guy took my nieces up super sports but I have a super appreciation for the arts now through my nieces. So >> elementary school, middle school, high school plays, they've all been great. So Meredith, uh welcome. I'm a softball coach. We're excited to have you. Um I think I've been coaching nine or ten years. Another our head coach Craig's been here a little bit longer and uh there's already buzz about you. So we're very I've only been kicked out of one game. We're pretty we maintenance. You know, you don't hear a lot out of us unless I know every once in a while $25 course. I took it last year. Every once in a while you

got to defend your players and get kicked out. >> Stay off social media about these umpires too. >> That that was five years ago five years ago. He tonight we're we're best friends. >> You know those those cameras that catch the plays, right? So >> I had to wrote an apology about that. That was five years ago. So very uh happy to have you aboard. One more thing, Mrs. Whit, you get acknowledgement here and there. um you helped one of my daughters who was struggling in reading. She's 24 now and she had an IEP. We were worried about her um you know passing I read. She works in upper level management now for Home Depot and presented to some executives today. PowerPoint, speech, everything. So the little girl that struggled and you took her in

and helped her out when whatever grade she was in, you know, she checked in with me today. Let me know how good she did. So thank youelcome. you know, 15, 16, 17 years ago, whatever it was. So, >> I'm not retiring, guys. Okay. >> I just thought of that. >> I thought of that and jotted it down when Mr. Ple brought it up. So, your your impact has been for many years and we'll continue. Thank you. >> It's all I got. >> I can back that also. >> You guys got anything? >> No. Seems like this year just flew by. Seems like we were just hiring Alison couple months ago. So, but here we are. So, but with that we'll move to adjourn.
