So, thank you again. Do you All right, at this time we will move on to our information items. We'll first start with our 3.01 blue ribbon facilities update with Mr. Roger Smith. Thank you, Madam President, Dr. Smith, members of the board. Uh the kitchen is nearing completion. We're hoping to have it fully functional for this summer um learning summer
learning academy uh this summer. So uh the orchestra room the finishes are going in and that'll be done here for long as well. Uh the hallways are over 95% complete throughout the building and we moving on to Fall Creek Valley. The main gym is being painted. The floor uh new bleachers and acoustical uh panels will be going up. Uh the front, we now have the metal panels in for the new front facade of the entrance. Uh most of the site work, especially in the athletic sides, are complete. Tennis courts, uh softball and baseball. uh new LECC exterior. Lot of curving sidewalks going in and hopefully in the next two weeks we'll see some asphalt going down. Again, some exterior work. Interiors moving along. Uh glass fronts going in the conference areas as well as the
ceilings and floors being completed. And again, more interior work going on. Great phase two. We now have a construction trailer on site and that'll really gear up in June. You can see a demolation shoot as well as some tuck pointing going on on the outside of the building. Uh we continue on with roof work and our HVAC work at Indian Creek, Harrison Hills, Scouse Test and Cresy. Thank you for those updates, Mr. Smith. Board, are there any questions regarding the blue ribbon updates? Sounds like everything's moving along great. And I believe we might have a board visit here soon to see the new construction at the LEC. So, thank you for that. All right. At this time, we'll move on to 3.02 update on bids for Forest Glenn. Mr. Roger Smith. Madame President, Dr. Smith.
Members of the board, uh we received bids on April 25th. There were 13 bid categories over 38 contractors bidding. Uh bids came in at or below estimated costs. A good competitive bids. the GMP contract for Gore Core and Garcia for Forest Glenn Elementary room edition and also playground edition is 7,876,553. The total project both soft and hard cost is uh around 10 million and we will be recommend recommending recommending uh the approval of the bids and uh GMP to core and Garcia. We do have Scott Hunt here with Ratio, the architect of the project and of course Core and Garcia uh being our CMC. They both partners uh also did the first phase of the renovation there at Forest Glenn. Thank you for that. Uh board questions, Miss Lawrence. Yes, Mr. Smith. As you know,
I have a daughter of course. So, we're very excited to see these updates happening. Um it for just for members of the public who don't understand why these um updates were necessary because we did just update remind me the year again that we completed our I don't mean to put you on the spot. I know it was a minute ago but we have updated the school. It's 21 21. Okay. So, in 2021, we did update Forest Glenn, uh, which, you know, obviously was part of our blue ribbon project to touch all of our schools. Can you help the public understand why these additional changes are necessary to support Forest Glenn? Forest Glenn has been growing. We added the preschool and kindergarten there uh after the renovation. So expanding uh classrooms uh because we have the
portables out there that give them the necessary space right now. So we are adding six classrooms, two offices and a main restroom uh for the building that will put them at a good capacity. And when will the renovations estimated completion date be? Uh just over a year. We we look for that classrooms to be completed and in place for the fall of 26 school year. Any other questions regarding the Forest Glenn plans and specifications? Excuse me. Okay. Thank you for that, Mr. Smith. Moving on to 3.03, the update on catering RFPs. Mr. Matt Miles. Thank you, Madam President, members of the board. Dr. Smith. Back in February, uh, this board gave approval to, uh, put out an RFP to seek new catering vendors for use here at, uh, at the new LEC as well as
this building, just other facilities throughout the district. We're happy uh, to report back tonight as information now and then for your approval later this evening that we accepted proposals from five vendors all here in sort of the greater Lawrence area. Uh you see those names in front of you and uh from Cur Heroes, Chick-fil-A, Fox Garden, Jugs Catering, and Kinsey's Italian Cafe. Uh once again, those will be our exclusive uh food food providers um for catering at our new LEC and we'll bring that back for approval later this evening. Thank you, Mr. Miles. Board, any questions regarding the catering RFP? done. So, are we to understand that all five of these will be our vendors? Correct. Okay. So, I love that. I love that. I love that. Especially um love the choices there. So, very
nice. Just want to make sure that I was understanding that correctly. Thank you very much. Thank you. Because hold on. In the past, we only had one. Correct. Currently, we have one. Okay. That's what And that one is still on the list because they do correct work. Okay. Perfect. Thank you. Miss Lawrence. Yes. So, Mr. Miles, could you please explain in what circumstance we would need to have someone come in and cater an event and how that would be applicable if, for example, the public were to use the space? Yeah, absolutely. Thank you for the question. Um we host a number of events um here at our our current LEC and and we're going to have a great facility at the new LEC there in a great location right on the fort on the fort.
There are times when we have internal events. It may be professional development. It may be an administrator meeting. Uh things with our own staff that these certainly would help us with, but we also host a number of out of other outside uh organizations here in the community or even across the state. Um, so there's opportunities for those uh folks to whether it's a breakfast, a lunch, those types of events and and happy to have greater greater uh variety for them to choose from. So not just to provide lunch and unlimited sauce. I mean, I would probably eat from these vendors uh on a regular basis, but no, that is not that not what this is for. Thank you to say one more thing, please. I think it and I just want to say there is
a a culture of excellence in Lawrence Township and one of the things I just want to applaud um I know Miss Blankenship you are always working tirelessly Superintendent Smith when people come to see us whether it is for an interview always treating people right and I think sometimes it's really easy to say you know food is such a frivolous expense and it really goes to show that we treat people right and when people give their time, we express gratitude by filling their bellies. And so just really am grateful that we're part of a district that takes such good care of the people that give their time and talents. And so um it may seem inconsequential to a lot of individuals, but it really does mean a lot to those of us that are working. Um
many times I I know there are interviews on Wednesday where it'll be provided. People don't realize people will be working here until nine o'clock at night and many of them are volunteers. So, thank you for the continued support. Um, something really small but really means such a so much to so many people. So, thank you. Mr. Miles is also an economic impact. We're trying to keep the money within Lawrence. We are exclusive hosts of many of the department of education. We also are host exclusively to the state principal leadership academy which brings hundreds of principles from around the state. We want to make sure they spend the money in Lawrence. So by having this exclusive agreement, it's a great way to pump up our own business in our township in our city. So that's the
goal behind this board. All right. Very good. Great questions, comments or any other questions or comments regarding RFPs? Okay. Thank you, Mr. Miles. We will move on now to 3.04 request for resolution authorization naming of Belzer Middle School Auditorium. Mr. Dr. Dan Kusnik. Good evening again, Madam President, Dr. Smith, members of the board. Well said. It's
for that first person experience. Um, now I'm going with Oh, yeah. Mrs. D. I um will Mr. Davyy will we be having a ceremony when we actually are able to have him present? Thank you, board. Um, when we do the dedication of the buildings, middle schools in October, we will do a special ceremony for Mr. Davey there and uh will be with the auditorium. I'm assuming that will so I don't have to ask this question again. I know we've already dedicated the high schools. We'll do the same thing for Yeah, absolutely. We will do the middle schools. Roger. If all falls right, October of 2025 this fall and then the high school. We're going to do I'll let Mr. Ken get to the next one because we'll do something special. That was Yeah, a great
segue for 3.05 05 request for resolution authorization naming of Lawrence North High School community room. Mr. Knik. Madame President, Dr. Smith, members of the board, I bring to you a request this evening for a board resolution authorizing the naming of the Lawrence North High School community room in honor of Dr. Steve Gagline. Dr. Steve Gagline served as a teacher at Lawrence Central High School and and dean of students, assistant athletic director, assistant principal, and principal at Lawrence North High School. The MSE of Lawrence Township Board of Education honors and recognizes Dr. Steven L. Gagline for a career dedicated to the service of the MSE of Lawrence Township and the community at large. Again, I present this information this evening. Thank you for that. And I'd like to make a note for those um watching online that Dr. Gagline is in our presence sitting very humbly in the front row. So this is an honor. Uh board, any questions or comments regarding this? Miss done. So I just
when will we have we'll do a special ceremony, Roger and Grant, once we have everything in place. Hopefully before our good man leaves us in in June. Uh we have a special retirement ceremony. So hope we can tie all that together, but it depends on how quickly we're able to put all the plaques and things. This is a simple one because the room is already done. We just need to make sure we get the placers ready to honor him. wants you to prove. I'm sorry for it. Once you prove it, just very welld deserved. Sorry of how awkward it is sitting here hearing people say nice things about you. But it's sort of sorry not sorry. It's the Dr. Gagline farewell tour. We will miss you. Um Dr. Maholland, just quick question. Does the Lawrence
Township School Foundation um get involved with this because I noticed it's the NSD Lawrence's general fund but um looking Is there any involvement? We we always with this this comes through the district. The foundation cannot be involved in this. This requires board action. Okay. And obviously district funds in order to do it. So this is through our board policies. Okay. Yeah. Question. Any other questions or comments? What a what a great Well, did you There's one point with Dr. Gagline. 37 years of service just to Lawrence Township schools. He left Butler University, came to North Central High School, and folks, he has never left. You talk about loyalty. Hello. Congratulations, Dr. Gagglon. Thank you. All right. If there are no other questions, at this time, we will move on to 3.06 with our f financial
update. Mr. Miles. Thank you, Madam President, members of the board. Dr. Smith. In front of you, you have our April 30, 2025 financials, starting with our transportation fund. Um, happy to present revenue in line with expectations as well as total expenditures. Um, and our ending cash balance and in the transportation fund is also within expectations for the general fund. Likewise, revenue uh in total exceeds expectations and projections uh and our expenditures slightly below uh yielding a higher than projected cash balance at the end of April. Just over $15 million. Thank you, Mr. Miles. Board, any questions or comments on our financial updates? Question done. I noticed that we are um on our actual year-to- date on transportation, we are over on supplies and materials. I'm wondering um what we believe to be the reason behind
that. So certainly my uh esteemed expert here in the operations field next to me also uh we've seen certainly price increases on our supplies as as anticipated. Um certainly um that's that's hitting us as well. We're feeling that. And I I guess the question is, you know, obviously we've all heard about the we know that there's negotiations going on now with China with tariffs and so on and so forth. Um but curious is to do we anticipate that we'll see this trajectory throughout the year and what does that mean budget implications um for future budgets? Sure. Um it's a great question. Uh obviously, you know, we're all watching the news. we're all subject to to what happens um as as sort of um you know tariffs and other things you know come into play. U
competition you know yes it does appear to be the trend. Um yes we've also you know put ourselves in a good position from a cash balance standpoint um both in our general fund uh operations transportation certainly but it's certainly something we're going to have to watch moving forward as well. um we will we will certainly consider that as we put our budget together for next year. Um also keeping in mind kind of our revenue forecasts as well. So we're certainly going to have some challenges uh up up in the future months. Um Mr. Smith um as you well know the board of education are experts. They visited transportation facility and see the wonderful facility we have. We have a supply room and generally speaking where do we buy our supplies from Mr. Smith? We buy
them. Are they made in America or do they come from overseas? They do come from overseas. We do both uh local supply companies and across the US. Uh also the increase there, we have the most drivers we've had today than we've had since 2014. So part of the increase is we have more drivers on the road, which is a good thing. That is excellent news. board. Any other questions or comments on the financial update? Okay. Well, now we'll move on to our board committee chair reports. I'll go ahead and start with Miss Dunn. Parks and Recreation. Lawrence Township had our international festival on Saturday. Um, and it was a lovely day. Very beautiful event. Uh, next parks meeting, board meeting is on Wednesday. 039right. Um, ISBA legislative updates, Miss Lawrence. Well, since we've wrapped up the legislative cycle, there aren't many updates to to be had. So, no update from me this evening. Yes. Thank you. I know everyone can use the rest. Yeah. All right. At this time, then I will move on to policy with Miss Tucket. All right, we have Niola has released policy revision package volume 37 number two. Uh this volume is one of two that we will see based on the last legislative session. It includes proposed revisions for 74 policies. Dr. Harshburgger, I have a new coffee and I'll bring snacks for this. I'm ready and oddly excited for it. The revisions recommended in this update are deemed necessary to comply with the changes in the law. both state and federal and the policy committee is
on track for the first reading at the June 9th work session. So I'm ready, sir. All right. Excellent. Thank you for that. So it will be busy this summer. All right. So we'll move on now to the Lawrence Township School Foundation. Dr. Mhalland. Okay. Well, Lawrence Township School Foundation just finished their Apples for Excellence that you may have seen, honor an educator. And then in May, there are two events coming up. Uh May 17th is the Prairie Dash. Come out and support the kids as they do their run. Um and on May 29th is the for the kids golf tournament. Very good. Thank you for the committee uh reports board. It's been I know a busy time. I did want to acknowledge uh one thing Dr. Smith uh with to go with the ISBA. Uh
we found out that through the Indiana School Board Association, our board is going to be honored or recognized next Tuesday uh for an EGA award. It's an exemplary governance award. And basically, the EGA program annually honors both school boards and board members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to continued improvement, professional learning, and student outcomes. So um our board will be recognized as a commendable board and I just want it for the 2024 year. So thank you board for your work um involvement. PD happens for all of us at all levels. So thank you for participating. Okay. At that point we will move on to our action items. Action item 4.01. Approval for the bids for Forest Glenn. Mr. Roger Smith. Madame President. Dr. Smith, members of the board, recommend a board approve the bid
and the GMP contract to Core and Garcia for the Forest Glenn Elementary as presumed. I'll entertain a motion to approve. So moved. Second. That's it, Miss. All right. Properly moved in Miss Pucket and seconded, Miss Lawrence. All right. All in favor? I I all opposed. All right, the eyes have it. Board, any questions or comments on the approval of the bids for forest plan? All right, at this time we'll move on to action item 4.02, approval on the catering RFPs. Mr. Matt Miles. Madame President, as shared earlier this evening, at this time I recommend that the board approve five bids from our local vendors in response to our catering RFP. All right, I'll entertain a motion for approval. So move. Second. Properly moved, Miss Lawrence, and seconded, Miss Dunn. All in favor? I. None opposed.
All right. The eyes have it. Any questions or comments on the catering RFPs? Okay. Madam President, I move that we treat action items 4.03 through 4.09 as an agenda. Okay. Do we have a second for the movie? Second. All right. properly moved. Uh, Miss Pucket, seconded, Miss Lawrence for the move to a consent agenda 4.03 through 4.09. All in favor? I. All opposed. All right. I move approval of the consent agenda. We have a second. Second. All right. Properly moved, Miss Pucket, and seconded, Dr. Mahaland for the approval of the consent agenda. All in favor? I I Any opposed? All right. The eyes have it for the consent agenda. And these items are also available to the public to view um on our consent agenda. It's items such as our personnel report, claims, service agreements,
field trips, fundraisers. So, it's available for viewing at this time. So, now at this time, I will move on to our board comments. Do I have a volunteer? and I will call Miss No comments. All right. Thank you, Miss Lawrence. Okay, Dr. Mahalins, I just added last week was teacher appreciation week and one of the highlights just as a mother. Um, we have the kids, they have to write a thank you card to all of their teachers and sometimes it takes a little nudging because you can have different personalities with our teachers and children. And this year they were ahead of schedule on writing out their thank you cards. And while that may not mean much to anyone that spoke volumes as a parent that they are quickly bringing to their hearts and minds the
impact of the teachers around them. And so thank you for our educators that it does not fall on deaf ears and hearts for thank you for all that you do for our children. So thank you. Well said. Yeah. Um, I was able to attend the ISBA president's virtual roundt with several other schoolboard presidents across the state. We were able to share some big wins from our our districts and it was um very encouraging to share some of the Lawrence excellence around, you know, around the state. So, that was a privilege and an honor. It's also helpful to talk to other districts and see what's impacting their students universally as ours and what unique um challenges and opportunities we have. So that was wonderful. Um I'll turn it over to Dr. Smith at this time. Thank
you, Madame President and members of the board. My comments will be short, but we have a lot that's going on, but we first just to put on the record send a special thank you to our Secretary of Education, Dr. Jenner who did visit uh ELC Mary Mary Castle um Miss Llland and Dan Kousnik and team they were there to see our teacher apprenticeship program which was outstanding and so we thank her for visiting taking time out she did recognize it in her statewide newsletter and the board needs to know about that also board uh you've been very busy last week the board of education participated in our retirement celebration thank you Carla Johnson and the HR team for putting on an outstanding evening celebration of our retirees. Reminding the board we only have one meeting
this month, but we are very busy. Our district celebration will take place on Friday, May 23rd. By correct, Carla, the board will be front and center as we will celebrate the true excellence in our district, our staff members. And then also board, don't forget front and center June 4th and 5th are our graduations. And that is a profunction of Lawrence Central and Lawrence North High School. You will be there to accept their recommendations for graduation and that is always truly a wonderful celebration. Board Saturday I traveled to Bloomington, Indiana. Excuse me. Friday had an opportunity to have time to celebrate my son but in the presence of many Lawrence Township graduates from Indiana University. And so normally a superintendent doesn't get to attend college graduation with their former students, but I did. I want everyone
to know they IU is well represented with bears and wild cats. Okay, well represented and I took several pictures with those that I was able to do. But I also enjoyed my son, okay? He's a bear. So thank you board for educating my young man as he is moving on to bigger and better things. And that's what it's all about is to watch those young people go to the other side. So education is very important and Lawrence Township provides a very good education for its students. So we made it through Indiana University in four years. So thank you to you and the previous boards. Keep it going. Thank you. Thank you Dr. Smith and thank you board cabinet everybody. Um just a reminder our next board well actually our next board meeting will be a
work session on Monday June 9th at 5:30 here. Um, at this time I will entertain a motion to adjurnn. So moved. Properly moved. Miss Lawrence and seconded Miss Dunn. All right, we are out. Thank you everyone. to get a bonus. I'm good. How are you? Had that with you. Thanks for luck, man. How are you? Yes. Thanks for what you're doing. Go get it.
