[music] Okay, good evening everyone. I'm going to go ahead and call the December 8th, 2025 board of education meeting to order. >> So, uh, can everyone stand for pledge of allegiance? I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [clears throat] >> Just going to go out on a limb and say we need another flag. [laughter] Okay. Uh, roll call. >> Mrs. Dweiler >> here. >> Mr. Hulie >> here. >> Mr. McCartney >> present. >> Mr. Vot >> here. >> Mrs. Walker >> here. Thank you. Let's take a moment for silent prayer and meditation. Thank you. May I have a motion to approve the December 8th agenda for the Jonathan Auto Regular Board
meeting? >> Second. >> Mrs. Deweiler. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hulie. >> Yes. Mr. McCartney. Yes, >> Mr. Bo. >> Yes, >> Mrs. Walker. >> Yes. >> Motion passes. >> We have a motion to approve the minutes from the November 11th, 2025 regular meeting and the November 20th, 2025 special meeting. >> So move. >> Second. >> Roll call. >> Mr. Hulie. >> Yes. >> Mr. Mrs. Dweiler. >> Yes. >> Mr. McCartney. >> Yes. >> Mr. Vot. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Walker. >> Yes. >> Motion passes. >> Thank you. Now it's time for the superintendent's report. >> Thank you, Mrs. Walker. Well, I wanted to start this evening by congratulating the board on the passage of the bond. What exciting news. It's been a a long month. Uh just, you know, waiting for the results. I know
Mr. Ingles sent out the board of elections uh certification last week. So, we're really excited to get started with planning and I want to assure the board that we are already doing initial planning. I also wanted to congratulate Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Debtweiler um on being reelected as school board members. >> Oh yeah. >> I [laughter] I guess you know with the how loud the bond was and how close it was and the conversations around that the Union County letter that went out and then running unopposed uh it slipped Mark and I's mind last November. So we are glad to have you back. >> Well, I'm glad to be back. >> We were considering remaking on it. Didn't congratulate us. [laughter] Right. >> Thank you. So, I've been communicating with our leadership team and the
board on what, you know, the next three years are going to look like. We have a full administrative meeting this this Wednesday that we're going to dive deep into the weeds about what some of these phases can look like. Um, so everyone in the community, the board, the staff, our families know what the district configurations and the buildings buildings are going to look like in the next three years. But what the next two to three years of phasing looks like, we just don't have that answer yet. We're working through it. What I can reassure the board on is we're not going to wait until 2028 and make all the changes at once. We're going to put little transitions and phases in place so that we don't have such huge changes um in 2028 when that
new junior high building is built. Um we'll be intentional. We're going to be strategic and make minor transitions each year and I will keep the board um up to speed on what some of those things look like. I want to give just a couple simple examples. Uh, you know, little little changes might not mean a lot, but in the long scheme of things, they make a big difference. So, this past summer, all the board knows that we put those new traffic flow patterns in place at the high school. It was it was um an overwhelming task because there were so many different ideas and suggestions. We had Rderman for safety and security. We had engineers with uh Steve Hammond and Paul. Uh it was Mr. Clark, Mr. Rule, Mr. Hayes, myself, Mr. Lester, and um
we completely changed the direction of the traffic flow. But what we did was, if you remember, added that two-lane access road that goes all the way to the back of the property where the tennis courts are. What that does now is once that junior high is sitting where it potentially will be sitting, our families and students and staff, they're already trained to follow that traffic flow in a direction that is maneuvering around where that junior high building is going to go. So, you know, doing that and opening a new building and sending a a 6 through 12 campus there all at once, those are hard changes, but little phases like that are going to make it easier for our families. Another initiative that I'm working on with Mr. Walter and Mr. Lester, and the board
might not be aware of this yet, but our [clears throat] uh bus garage, buses can only uh enter and exit on 42 south of Kanan. We're going to have a roundabout construction, if if the board is aware, here in the next year, roundabout construction, the four classrooms here at Kanan, and if you can imagine the construction congestion over the next couple years. So, what we're looking at is uh best cost for an access road where buses can enter 42 or exit 42, come around the far side of the parking and enter or exit onto Price Hillyards. So, parents and families, we might be able to do drop off pickup and buses either way, Hillyard's Price or 42, but we're going to have options with how this looks to eliminate the amount of congestion. So, just
those types of phases are things that we have in place. Um, it's my goal, and I shared this last month, is not to use general funds for short-term solutions like the modular classrooms, especially next year. We're really going to be squeezing some of these buildings for extra space. And I want to thank Mr. Walter for being so intentional on some of the planning that he has here at Cany Kane and preparing for some fourth graders. If we can if we can make it work and face some fourth grade classes here and get the construction started on the four classrooms as soon as possible um then we might be able to make it uh through the next couple years without modular classrooms. So I want to thank Mr. Walter. Now everyone might ask me now, okay,
so what does that mean? What does it look like? We still need our architects, our engineers, and our construction manager to to be able to help us put together a timeline so we can communicate communicate that with our families and our students and our staff. So, here in the next month or two, we really hope to be pressing the new firms that we're going to be hiring to help us with the timeline so we can be communicating with their families so they have a year of preparing for what it's going to look like here at Kanan. Um, what you have in front of you there, Mr. Lester, if you don't mind, just you know, maybe give a statement on what you're how you're tracking the the firms that are coming that are coming in. >>
Yeah, so this is just a list of everyone that's reached out so far. They haven't submitted RFQS or anything like that. It's just a list of people that have either reached out to us or we talked to at the capital conference or someone has connections with. So these are just people that have reached out some general information um and we'll add to the list as we get more people to reach out. So Mr. Lester has been doing an excellent job tracking that we'll keep the board informed. you have uh access to this form um on a link through your email. So you can keep an eye on that over the next week as firms continue to trickle in. [clears throat] So I'm grateful that Mr. Rule is here. He always does a great job recognizing
our student athletes. And we have Ally Hayes here is going to be recognized as well too. Mr. rule. I shared with the board earlier this morning that we have some fall athletes that have other obligations or practices or lifting or offseason uh practices or games. Mr. Rule will touch on that, but I'm glad that we at least have one senior athlete with us. And then Mr. Walter and Mr. Jester put together this beautiful video that the board will see after athletics. And what's so powerful about this video is not just the, you know, the action steps and the intentional work they have at Kanan, but it aligns exactly to our future ready work. So, I think the board will just really appreciate some of these student interviews that they're sharing our their passions and their
interest. Um, right now it's Kanan students, which is a district-wide future ready initiative. Um, one last piece before I hand it back uh to you, Mrs. Walker, and then over to Mrs. uh Mr. rule. Uh last board meeting, there was a motion on the table for the treasurer and the superintendent to explore uh legal options with regards to the property notice that went out on November 3rd, the day before the election. And I just wanted to report back that uh there will be no recommendation for legal action at this time. >> Mr. R. Thank you for having us here tonight. Um, as Dr. Miller was saying, um, it's tough this time of year, you guys. It's tough this time of year to get, um, all of them here. Um, I'll just recognize volleyball start, but
just talking about our groups in general. Um, our coach tonight has practice going on um, with some of the younger kids in that age. And then our other two volleyball girls that we want to recognize are both at club practice right now. and uh and Allie's on her way to club practice. So, I told her I would get her recognized and then get her on the road field to get there. Um and the cross country is in the in the same predicament. So, we've got one um to recognize. I'm going to start by talking a little bit about volleyball. We had three kids on the volleyball team this year that received all Ohio recognition. Our first one is Payton Hannah who's a junior. Um Payton received honorable mention all Ohio. She was honorable mention all
central district and also second team all conference. Also receiving all Ohio awards was Cali Kylie Trout. Kylie was 13 all Ohio. She was a all region selection which is through the AVCA. She was second team all central district and then she was first team all conference as well. Um volleyball had a great season. Um in addition to that though they received much other honors for a lot of their kids but these are the three kids that received all state honors. Um now we'll talk about Ally for a minute. Um, I don't want to embarrass her here in front of everybody, but I do want you guys to understand, um, sometimes when someone comes along and you can look back at the numbers and look back at at what they did, uh, while being here at
Jonathan Alder, it really kind of makes you stop for a minute and say, you know, wow, someone was much better sometimes than I realize when I'm just watching them out there on the court. um exceptional when you go back to look at all these numbers, the accolades received um and even for me, you know, after games just being able to say, "Hey, so proud of you giving you a medal. Congratulations. You did a great job tonight." Um is is never really getting to say to somebody like, "Hey, here's really how great of a player we're talking about that's going to graduate um and will be in the record books for Jonathan Alder history forever." So, a little bit about Alli Hayes. She was first team all Ohio which this is the third team third time
she's received all Ohio honors. She was also one time third team and also one time honorable mention all Ohio. She was the um American volleyball coaches association all region. She was the central district volleyball player of the year. She was first team all central district. She was the central buckeye conference player of the year. She was first team all central buckeye conference. And in addition to that, this is the third time in her career that she's been all district and the third time in her career that she's been first team all league. Um both of those again just not getting all district but being first team all district being um three times first team all league. Um in addition to that, what a lot of people don't know um so in our last game that
we lost um which was the regional finals and I know a tough tough loss for all of them. Um Ally broke the all-time kills record that night um for John Fowler history. Um the record holder before that was Ava, her [laughter] sister. So I'm sure a fight when she got home, but um nonetheless, she finishes with 1,297 total kills in her career. Um in addition to that, she also had 162 aces in her career serving, which is second all time on her career list. She recorded her 1,000th kill in her career versus Bell Fountain um on September 5th, which was the second second or third week of the season. It was very very early in the year to get your 1,000th kill. Um she also had 35 kills in a game, which sets the all-time
record for most kills in a game ever. Um and did that versus Kenton Ridge, which is probably the best one of the best opponents on our schedule. So, not not breaking a record against somebody that's not very good, but breaking a record against a really good opponent. Um, she finishes with 438, um, which is the record for the most kills in a single season all time in Jonathan Alder history. Um, the team was 24 and3 this year. They were Central Buckeye Conference champions. They were district champions and they regional runner up. um to go back to sell this going back to my coaching days. Um I remember there was a time um where there was a kid that um was like on the verge to break the three-point record. And I was an assistant at
the time and some someone had come down to our bench and said, "Hey, so and so needs one more three to break the record. Will you let coach know?" And I said, "Sure, absolutely." So I handed coach the uh the note to let him know, "Hey, so and so needs one more three." And he said, "Well, that's great. He'll do it when it matters." meaning this opponent's not very good, but they'll break it when it means something. Um, I bring that story up because I feel like a lot of these records for Ally are against opponents that are really good. Like our schedule, we played Wat, we played Hartley. Um, our league is really, really tough. Um, so when you look at these numbers, not only has she achieved these, um, but she's achieved them
against really quality competition. um and was a was a was an incredible leader on our team this year. Um so I'm really glad she could be here because like I said, sometimes players come and go and you don't get an opportunity to recognize them. Um we just want to say to Ally, congratulations on a great career. Wish she had more years left to continue playing for us. Um but she'll be one of those that goes up on the wall um as first team all Ohio and one of the best we've ever had. So congratulations [applause] You can stay right there. I'm going to have you go this way so we don't have any drama. >> Thank you. >> I'll let you I'll let you handle this. You want it? >> Right in the middle. Perfect.
All right. Congratulations. >> Thank you. [laughter] >> Okay. Um the other kids I've got to talk about I'll go through very quickly since they are able to be here. But boys and girls cross country again had another um incredible year. I'll first talk about girls cross country. Um we had two kids getting all Ohio recognition. Um Addison Ranley um who is a senior this year qualified for the state meet which earns um the state level recognition. In addition to that she was all region finishing eighth in that meet. Um in the district meet she was fourth. She was first team all CBC and also academic all Ohio. Um recently, um Addie came to me too as well and said that she's going to uh um so just a great place for her to be able
to run and go to the division one level and do that as well. Um the other one is Ella Lucer. She was a senior on our girls cross country team, qualified for the state meet as well. Um she ended up being second team all Ohio as she finished 45th in the state meet. Um she was all region um with a fifth place finish in the district meet. She was third in the CBC. Um she was the runner of the year. Um she was also first team all CBC and academic all Ohio. And Ella is going to um Eastern Michigan University. So we've got two senior cross country runners that are um going to be in the MAC and and be able to compete at the next level which is pretty cool. Um team awards. Um
the team finished in the regional meet um in sixth place. that did not qualify for the state this year as a team. Um, you got to be in the top five. So, they just narrowly missed the state tournament. In addition to that, in the district meet, they were third. Um, and in the CBC, they won their sixth straight CBC championship. Um, which obviously they've got some great senior leadership there um with those two kids that helped make that happen. Um, lastly, our boys cross country team did qualify for the state tournament as a team. um in the state tournament. This is the third year in a row for them to make it. Uh they finished 23rd in the state tournament. That team was compiled by Lincoln Wilson, Brandon Engel, Mark Good and Odell, Jake Good,
Calvin Batty, and Noah Thompson. Um you can see what grades they're in there. We've got four seniors um in that group, but a decent number of kids coming back as well. Um also in the regional meet, those guys were fourth. on the district meeting, they were fourth and then the CBC, they won their sixth straight um CBC championship. So again, another great year by both boys and girls cross country. Last thing I want to mention about those, if you look down at the bottom, he regional postseason awards. I don't want to go through every one of them, but I do want to say that Lincoln um finished 17th in the state meet um which qualifies him also for first team all Ohio. Um and he is going to the University of Finley. Um, so again,
another kid with a great opportunity at the next level and just just a hard worker that has fun and enjoys the sport. These kids all are in the weight room right now and practicing and working out. So that's that's why them and coach Kreps aren't able to be here tonight, but wanted to again just get an opportunity to recognize them and say congratulations. Um, lastly, football all Ohio will come out tomorrow. Um, so we don't know. I really feel like we're going to have um I think we'll have at least one first team all Ohio high football player. Um we had a kid that was Central District player of the year, so I feel like he's probably going to be a firstteamer. Um but football's not out yet. So those that's the only one that
we have that's not posted. So >> thank you, Mr. Ro. >> Yeah, thank you guys. We appreciate that. >> Thank you. >> All right. here and chat with you guys a little bit about some things that are going on in Kanan. Dr. Miller asked if I would put together a presentation and the one requirement was to keep the length down. Mr. Rule typically takes up the most. [laughter] >> Hey Rob, I'm pretty sure you said that following him last time we were here. >> [laughter] >> Um want to take a minute to talk a little bit about our um Kan Middle School clubs this year. So So last year was the first time that we had clubs at Kan Middle School. When you think of middle school um fifth and sixth grade typically don't have
the extracurricular activities that you would see at the junior high or high school. That's the part that I've always kind of I know I don't love that you don't have that opportunity. And also there's also the um the transportation confines of having clubs because not all students can participate in clubs that are after school. Um if they've got to ride the bus home and don't have a ride back, it's tough for them to get here. So So we kind of brainstor about that and end up having a couple champions within the the teacher team that that came together and said, "How can we how can we build this where all kids have an opportunity um and make it a meaningful experience and how do we pair that with some of our other district goals?" Um,
and Future Ready was the one that we we chose to kind of link into to have our clubs and our future ready um, component to our our district. Um, so I'm going to show a video of of some of our students and let them share a little bit about what clubs are and what they mean to them. And then we'll finish up after. [music] The reason why I chose to be in student council is because um really I just wanted to help make this school a better place and help get like people that are like struggling with things and get their words heard and get them out there so that we can fix those issues and really just to help people all together. My club is an interior design and what I'm most excited about
is we get to redecorate the conference room. [music] I enjoy in interior design club that we're redoing the conference room and how we'll get to help paint the walls and how we get to help make it colorful and make it a better place for meetings and Mr. while doing all the [music] [music] student council members have an opportunity to uh work on their career um connection [music] skills by working on their leadership skills. They've had an opportunity this year to help coordinate um and promote the um local food drive. Um they also will have an opportunity to um tour the city building and speak with our mayor um so they can get um a little bit more um indepth um help with learning about um city government. I'm in student council and we [music] made
posters for kindness day and it just helped people to express their kindness to others and I really enjoyed that because it was nice to see kindness around the school. In fitness club we develop many good skills and different workouts to be able to be better at fitness or whatever. So we are going to fit fitness friendship fitness to be able to learn more skills and be able to be a better person in the gym. So as one of the leaders of the fitness club at Kane Middle School um over the course of the semester we [music] lead the kids in various workouts and relay games and circuit type of workouts. And at the end of each semester that culminates in a field trip to Friendship Fitness which is a gym over in Dublin. And that's
a really cool opportunity for the kids because they get to hear from the owner. Um his name's Jeff Benick and he talks to the kids about um his role in the military because [music] he was a sentinel at our guard at the two of the unknown soldiers. So he kind of talks to the kids about that experience and it's really great because he discusses like his fitness journey and the role of fitness in the military and his career. Um he also gives them a chance to ask questions about starting a business. He kind of goes through the process of, you know, starting up your own business and the, you know, the different steps that are involved there. Um, they also take the kids through a workout. They get to see, you know, [music] the aspect
of what does a physical trainer do, what does a personal trainer do, or an exercise coach. Um later in the afternoon, one of the [music] coaches at the gym is going to come and speak to the kids about his role as a registered dietician, and he'll kind of talk to them about the role of healthy eating and, you know, that career path and what kind of education goes into um [music] pursuing a degree in becoming an expert in nutrition and diet. In fitness club, I've really enjoyed being active and being able to move my body and work out. It's good for my body. >> [music] [music] >> I'm in the stickers and stationary club and um every semester [music] we go to a different like place and this year we're going to the think big
space and we're going to go like see some things be made for us and we got to pick some things that they're going to pre-made for us. [music] >> Hi, I'm Mrs. Bazali and I am part of the sticker and stationery club here at Kanu. [music] In our group, kids get to use digital platforms like Canva to design t-shirts and tote bags and different projects to express themselves. And then we get to go to the think big space and produce those. But this kind of ties into [music] our students that have, you know, creative outlets, how they can turn that into either a drafting job or an entrepreneurial job creating their own products. Um, and we're really excited to see the things that they [music] can produce. >> Stickers and stationary. I really enjoy um
designing things on Chromebooks. Whatever comes out of your mind, you can just design it on a Chromebook and print it. [music] >> [music] >> In cosmetology club, we get to go to tolls for our field trip. We get to get our hair, our nails, and makeup done. And in high school, we get an opportunity to go and do that during tolls. at hospital. Cosmetology is helping young girls get engaged within the field of being an aesthetician, a nail technician, and a cosmetologist who focuses on hair. We have got the awesome opportunity to bring in people from um Columbus locally who own businesses in the in the region of of cosmetology or or being an esthetician. They've gotten some real life examples. Um the girls have gotten to see the trajectory of what does a career
look like? Where do I start? where can I go? And overall, we've just gotten to be creative and um the girls have really loved it. [music] I'm in cosmetology club and recently we had a guest speaker come in and she was like talking about her business and like what she does for like a living and she was telling us about her journey to get to where she is and I really liked um like when she came in she would answer all of our questions and it was really helpful like letting us know more information about cosmetology. The reason why I picked this club is cuz I want to do this in the future for my job. [music] So opportunity to see about five different clubs. We actually have 19 clubs this year. So, um, we've
got a variety of of what you saw here on top of you saw a glimpse of drone club, which is a new fun addition for students um, which have been racing through the hallways, which is which is always a joy to walk by and see. Um, anywhere from um, French club to really just anything that students were interested in. It started out with uh, they gave us feedback as last year's fifth graders and last year's fourth graders of things that they're interested in. not necessarily kinds of clubs, but what kinds of um activities, what kinds of um um events do they like to do? And that that built out about 60 different clubs they selected or they they had to choose from. And from there, um cuz again, you can't really have a club of
two. Um so we went from 60 and got down to about 19, which is our total amount we have this year, which is up from 17 we had last year. Um, and then there are some clubs that are um, uh, the art games club and you think like how does that connect to future ready? Um, I should have brought the poster, but we've got our future ready posters that are out there that are not necessarily what are the careers, but what are the the the soft skills that students need to work on. So, even though you hear yard games, it's the the collaboration, the teamwork and the competition that goes along with a yards club that really translates into um, employable skills and abilities for students to go out to to get a job at
the next level. So, um, clubs have been fun. It's it's a chance for students to be a part of something here during the day. Happens about every, um, every third week on Friday. We have an hourong, um, window at the end of the day in which they they meet with their clubs. They'll have a club first semester, then they'll have a second club their second semester. So, a chance to be a part of two different clubs um, be a part of of a group, a combination of fifth and sixth graders together are in one club. So, they can be around students that have like interests. Um, and then chance to see how does that connect to to future opportunities for them. So, it's been a fun adventure. That's kind of close. Any questions you guys
have? >> How How are they operated again? You said every third Friday. Is that right? >> Yeah, every third Friday we we we um have our last hour of the day. Um, we we have set up set up for our club time. Um, so that's where every teacher um in the building covers a a club that they were interested in. So, we kind of get the feedback from students and they say, "Here's the things we want to do." And then our staff's fantastic and they say, "Hey, I'll take this one. Hey, I'll I'll pair it with you and take that one." Um, I mean, I want to say 40 kids do volleyball club. So, we've got two clubs during that. >> What's the participation um amount? Does everybody have to join a club? >> Every
kid gets a club. >> Okay. >> So, every every student gets a club. Um, that's something that we we believe in. We believe that every student be part of the club. There wasn't a single student that that couldn't figure out a club that they wanted to be in. In fact, the question is, can I be in like four or five clubs? [laughter] >> They can be in two clubs. >> We we want the continuity for the semester so that they can it can culminate in either a a trip or a full day club. Um so each semester will finish up. So December 19th, we will have a full club day. So we will um like right before break we will we will have the entire day where some students are going to we about friendship
fitness we've got some others that are about to go to Hamlin Stain um our craft club will go to Hammer and Stain and do a craft with them to learn about that. So so it kind of ends in a a pretty big event um our survivor club like a TV survivor um they're going to go to one of our the US um ninja challenge >> off of order. They're going to go up there and the owner is going to give them kind of a a rundown of what the the facility is, but then they're going to set up a survivor challenge for them during that time. So, >> so cool. >> To answer your question, yes, they all get clubs and then they all participate and they all um have really enjoyed their time. >>
Do board members get to audit clubs. [laughter] >> You want to do the survivor challenge? >> Yes. >> What's your feedback been like? >> Feedback has been um fantastic. So I think anytime there's new um new activities, new events like staff like wait a second so we're going to do what you want us to to oversee these clubs and different it was hey it's really been cool to see students uh kind of in their element or it's fun to see them in the classroom but they're a completely different student when they're when they're engaged in this activity. So the feedback from staff has been outstanding and the feedback from students I get back and it's >> hey one one student say hey should we do clubs every day which good education um but feedback from
from everyone across the board has been pretty pretty solid and honestly the the >> the community members that have come in have been um provided some pretty good feedback on um from the cosmetology um speakers that come in and say hey this has been outstanding. It's been fun to fun to see students at this age because typically they're a little bit older, right? >> But it's a chance to get students higher levels of careers before they even start thinking about what they're going to do next. >> Yeah. Do you have a list? You can email us easily. >> A list of clubs. >> Yeah, >> absolutely. >> I'm just curious. >> So if they do two clubs, are they doing one every six weeks? >> Two club. It's one first semester and one second. >>
Oh, okay. All right. And then sometimes we have um like there's right now we don't have yearbook club but yearbooks will be a second half of the year club. Um so interior designs first semester in your club second seme >> um the biggest challenge is like the the push to say hey dream big. So it's uh okay you guys want to do what? Um make sure you're a sign there like hey we can do this but can can like we actually do a project. >> Sure like let's the conference room could be spruced up a little bit. So it's just >> okay >> I think the biggest challenge is not shutting down the big dreams that students have and say let's figure out a way to do it. Now Dr. Miller's probably tired of passing
on requisitions that I send out from way [clears throat] just to prove it. It's going to be [laughter] a great but it's just that um trying to get all the resources and trying to get the the speakers probably our our biggest uh the fiveyear goal is to get a heavy connection to um the the community to have speakers come in. >> The more we can get our our community members to come in and share with our clubs that the bigger impact it has for their next steps in their education. >> That's great. Great job. Great. I think it's pretty incredible to get the kids involved at this early age to, you know, doing it during the school day gives them an incentive to want to do it and then certainly will encourage them to continue
to stay involved in extracurricular activities and that sense of belonging they get from clubs is pretty incredible. So, I I love it. Thank you. >> Thank you, Mr. Walter. Two two comments. Let me speak to the board. um not as a superintendent but as a father. Alex is in a club and I'm telling you he is just so interested in when it's the day for the club to, you know, entertain him and we'll we'll talk to him about, you know, do you have homework? Is there something you need to do in math? He's like, "Yeah, but I've got uh clubs in two weeks from now, Dad." But he just wants to talk about that. So, it's just very motivating and uh I guess he's very passionate about it. So, I thank you. And then, Mr.
Hulie, uh did you hear that number that uh Mr. Walter said on the volleyball the girls 40? >> Um do you have a girls basketball club? >> Not not as of yet, but if they say it won't basketball a week ago. >> Now, that maybe answers our question of where our numbers are. [laughter] >> They're in the volleyball >> girls basketball club. >> Thank you, Mr. Walter. >> Yeah. >> Thank you, >> Rob. what can we do to to support you? Like I'm thinking like at the end of their experience in the club, do they get anything that identifies them as a member of a club, a t-shirt or anything that they anything we can do to like go out in the community and solicit like support where the kids could get like a tangible
reward at the end of it? >> Let me uh let me think about that. That's a great certificate while we have our award ceremony. And I think that'd be a great uh opportunity for them to be acknowledged for you guys through the semester of of that particular club. Um we've not gotten to that point yet, but I think that's a good one to add to our our next meeting when we come together. We can talk about that piece and also I think the uh the continued push to that into the fifth year, this is our second year to have that strong connection of the the outside in the community to have them be a part of it. So those are two great things to add to our >> Yeah, I think something distinctive like to
their club. I mean, the certificates are great, but I mean, it would be something distinctive to what they're involved in. That's even better. So, it would just be my my end goal to get something out of their investment in it. Absolutely. >> Do they do tolls? They do tolls tours at Kanan from Kanan, right? >> Or is that junior high? I was going to say it'd be cool if you made a connection from during the tolls tour for make sure that each of those kids goes to a tolls program that connects. But >> we've had to Rob has had to like a cosmetology thing are visiting them on the 19th as well. So the club goes to tolls um for their their end of semester trip but they don't actually come here. Also want to
shout out Mr. Jennifer, obviously I did not create the video that was [laughter] huge for the putting that together. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Um public comments. None. All right. Moving on to um section seven, the treasurer's report. >> A motion for the >> Yes. Can I have a motion to approve the November 2025 financial reports as presented? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Okay, Mr. England. >> So, um, [clears throat] we're right on track with our forecast. Uh, so we're 41% of the way through the fiscal year and we spent 41% of the budget. So, right on target there. Overall, our cash balance is running about um just here under 200,000 under what what I'm expecting. not too concerned about that. We're just waiting on timing of some receipts. Um, so overall, we're still
in a very strong state. Um, one thing that I've been working on quite a bit is talking to our our investment advisors, our bond underwriters, and our bond council to [snorts] prepare for the selling of notes for this month. So, we're preparing to sell $50 million worth of notes um for the end of by the end of this calendar year [snorts] um in order for us to invest those and not have to pay back the IRS on extra interest earned. So, we're in the process of getting ready to go price and go out to market on those. Um and also just working out the schedule for selling the bonds in the spring. So, we're targeting a March sale um in the month of March to sell our bonds, but in the meantime, um you know,
getting all the reductions in a row um to allow that to happen. And we're also are in the midst of our procurement process, which Dr. Miller, Mr. Leer touched on. We have a request for qualifications for architects due non Monday. Um and then we'll go in and select the firms we wish to interview. um so we can have a recommendation to the board on uh our January meeting and we issued our request for qualifications for construction manager firms yesterday. So that was published in the dispatch yesterday. Um and we're looking forward to see which firms are interested in um in you know bidding on the project and getting going on this tight timeline that we have if we wanted to be open um in three years. So answer any questions if there's any from the
board. Good. >> Okay. Mrs. Dweiler, >> yes. >> Mr. Hulie, >> yes. >> Mr. McCartney, >> yes. >> Mr. Vot, >> yes. >> Mrs. Walker, >> yes. >> Motion passes. >> Okay. Thank you for that report. Um, may I have a motion to accept the following grants and donations? uh 1,000 to cover 10 girls in the 2526 rocks program and [snorts] uh $11 cyber grant donation to Plane City Elementary. So move >> second. >> I just want to thank um Ally Allen at Monroe for applying for the scholarship to cover the 10 girls and rocks. And um Becky, can you I know we talked about it and I know here's what I know that it's a rocks means ruling our experiences and that it's an evidence-based program to help improve the confidence level of girls.
>> Yes. building confidence and just their self worth and just giving them experiences to that they might not otherwise have outside of um they might not be able to do it after school kind of thing. So it's something that they're able to do during the day and get this experience. They usually do it like during the lunch break a lot about how to um engage in social conversations, build friendships. um really kind of future ready types of skills that we're that they're learning as part of this learning of our experiences. They do go further into even some other how to um how to handle yourself handle yourself for our older girls and um like the junior high high school level which we're not doing in high school where they even do some self-defense um and
they practice some self-defense moves for when they're out on their own um to be able to defend themselves and stand up for themselves um when they're out in the public. So, I guess it covers a whole gamut of different skills, but um just helping them become young ladies who can handle themselves in a conversation or out in public with others around. >> Great. >> You're welcome to visit anytime. It's really pretty fun to watch. >> Where where are they going to go? >> I'm sorry. >> What did you say the last? So Ali Allen at Monroe and then Katie Rupia is running a club at the junior high. >> Okay. >> So I think she's also applying for the grant to see if she can do this. >> Okay, that's great. Thank you. Does anybody
else have any comments, questions? Okay, roll call. >> Mr. Hulie, >> yes. >> Mr. McCartney, >> yes. >> Mr. Ro, >> yes. >> Mrs. Walker, >> yes. >> Mrs. Dweiler, >> yes. >> Motion passes. May I have a motion to approve the amended appropriations and certificate of estimated resources as presented? >> So moved. [snorts] >> Second. >> Okay. Any questions, comments? Okay. Roll call. >> Mr. McCartney? >> Yes. >> Mr. Hulie? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Dweiler? >> Yes. >> Mr. Votto? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Walker? >> Yes. >> Motion passes. May I have a motion to approve the creation of fund 004-9026 to account for bond proceeds and expenditures. Second, >> this seems pretty self-explanatory. Creating a fund in accordance with a higher revised code to record the proceeds and expenses associated with the bond
issue. [snorts] Uh does anybody have any other comments, questions? Okay. Roll call. >> Mr. McCartney. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hulie. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Deweiler. >> Yes. >> Mr. Vot. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Walker. >> Yes. >> Motion passes. >> Great. Okay. Moving on to section 8. Um, policy committee update. This is a first reading and I'm going to give a summary. So, I know this is board members favorite time of the year. I love it. The policy update. >> So, I'm going to try to make it as exciting as possible. All right. >> Good luck. >> See if you can make it as exciting as Rob. >> I don't I can't I [laughter] can't compete with that. >> All right, Tyler, I need your help with this one. I need a slideshow [laughter] this.
Okay. First is um first of all, all of the policy updates. Um Bruce, as you know, Bruce and I sit on this committee and when we meet with Niola, um we are constantly asking for updates that are legally required um and best practice, but not all of the updates um necessarily are required. and we push back on those because we're still trying to kind of whittle down the policies as opposed to just creating new policies for the sake of policy. We already do a lot of the things that they're suggested policies are for. So anyway, the stuff we're bringing to you is stuff that both and I um have had the opportunity to review and think they're good recommendations. So >> quite a few resended too. Yes. >> I mean that's helpful to clean out
stuff. >> Yes. as a first reading. If you have any questions about any of this, please, you know, we can Bruce or I can go over it with you in detail in between now and next meeting, too. Um, >> don't overpromise, >> especially Bruce. [laughter] >> Uh, if you want any further question, >> leave it to the lawyer. >> Okay. So, first pol policy 2266, non-discrimination on the basis of sex. Um, this update uh changes the definition of fondling. it's now called criminal sexual contact [snorts] and uh removes sexual orientation/gender identity from the definition of sex. Um per the United States Department of Education letter and court rulings. Um policies 2430.02 and 2431 are both um revised based on House Bill 96. this uh policies would if you're if you are a student in another
district and you were being bullied, they could then apply to participate in either extracurriculars or activities in our district. Um, House Bill 96 limits that to home educated students only. So, if somebody lives in the London, for example, and um they're um homeschooled and they're participating in an athletic event at London, but they're being bullied because of their homeschool status, they can request here at Alder to participate in that same sport at Alder. But the um House bill said this doesn't apply to all students. It only applies to homeschool students. >> Gosh, does that make sense? >> It's very specific. >> Yeah. Okay. >> But it used to apply to all students. >> It used to. Yeah. So, um they just they just went in and actually that what with House Bill 96 was give
the exact intent of the the bill that was preceded it. It just didn't spell it out specifically enough. So, kids were using it to sort of get workarounds. Anyway, and it also added a provision for ice hockey that um in your policies, which is awesome, but somebody somebody in the house was big hockey cuz they got hockey added specifically that you can go for. >> Yeah, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. So if a homeschool student is getting bullied in their home district in participating in inter extracurriculars and athletics, they can ask the superintendent to come play here or participate here. Uh 3130 assignment and transfer. [snorts] This one is also revised. It applies to assignment of teachers based on the students best interest. Um seniority and contract status cannot be a primary factor. and
um collective bargaining agreements can't override this. Um policy 5130 referring to withdrawal from school um the requirement to notify the Bureau of Register of Motor Vehicles um when students under 18 withdraw has been uh removed. So as a district we don't have to do that anymore. Policy 5136 personal communications. Uh this was revised slightly. Um, we already had a great policy. So, this one says that in case of emergencies, they are still allowed to have access to their phones. Um, okay. Then attendance policy 5200. Um, truency intervention plans were eliminated. Districts create districts have to create one absence intervention team. Parents are automatically notified after absences reach more than 5% of the state minimum hours. Habitual truency complaints required are required unless family shows progress. Uh it includes also an update for excused absences allowing
eight hours for driver's ed. >> Happy to hear that Mr. Carter. >> Yeah. And um again also no longer a required report of truency to the registration register of motor vehicles. Um policy 5223 release time for religious instruction. This has been revised. Uh now uh the the schools must allow at least one period per week excused. two periods per week for K through eight and up to two units per week equivalent for high school. So, one to two, there's a limit max, two periods. [snorts] Um, students may bring outside program materials into school. And this doesn't really change anything for JA. It's just a policy revision. Policy 5410, promotion, acceleration, placement, and retention. it. Uh the automatic retention for students missing more than 10% of the year has been removed, but uh the policy still
requires retention if failing more than two classes unless a principal or teacher decides otherwise. Okay. Policy 6109 um is acceptance of payment by credit card which authorizes districts to accept credit card payments and sets requirements. Policy 6152, student fees, fines, charges. Um, it's a technical correction allowing for credit card payments. Policy 6830, audit. House Bill 96 requires the board or a committee to count funds at treasurer's term end. >> I do want to follow up on that one. Um, I did reach out to our legal counsel and they said that our monthly bank reconciliations that I provide every month counts towards um, satisfying that requirement. So, >> well, that's nice to hear, isn't it? >> It is. So, you guys don't have to sit and count millions of dollars, which I don't have sitting in
the office. >> Great. Okay. [snorts] Um, policy 7540.02, digital content and accessibility. This updates um the policy [snorts] updates to comply with the Department of Justice's ADA Title 2 rule, which um Mr. Jester has already been doing. Thank you. Policy 7541, electronic data disaster recovery plan. This is deleted. The content was then merged into policy which is the continuity of organizational operations and it's been updated to reflect house bill 96 cyber security program requirements which is uh the same for 8305 information security. It's been revised to um be in compliance with House Bill 96 cyber security program policy 8400 school safety. Uh now that policy must include 988 crisis lifeline information and it includes updates for suicide self harm threats and emergency plans must allow student cell phone use during active threat emergencies. Policy 8462,
student abuse and neglect. Um, House Bill 96 removes a mandate that child sex abuse training must or be delivered by law enforcement and prosecutors. Districts now can develop their own curriculum with agencies and experts. Policy 8640, transportation for non routine trips. The new rule allows students to eat and drink on buses during trips if a chaperone is present. >> What? >> Right. Policy 9270 um equivalent education outside school programs or outside schools participation in activities. House Bill 96 says home educated students may join JOTC without enrollment and only home educated students not other district transfers may participate in athletics after harassment bullying. I explain that here. Okay. Um >> this is basically a summary of >> yeah the non-discrimination policy updates um the key changes were um >> condensing maybe. >> Yes. And the technical
update is correcting the outdated office for civil rights contact information. So, we had multiple policies that referred to the Office of Civil Rights. Um. >> Mhm. And so what they did was they took three three new replacement policy or they took three pol okay I'm sorry three new policies 1422 3122 4122 [snorts] they combine non-discrimination equal employment opportunity and anti-harassment rules into one comprehensive policy for all staff groups. As a result, six existing policies are being deleted because they're now redundant. >> Okay. Um, that's about it. So, I'm wondering like I was looking at the transportation policies and I was wondering like we have all these um trips coming up on the agenda with like vans and coaches, assistant coaches driving. Do they get all this policy update language to know that hey, you're supposed
to do a pre-trip check, you know, that kind of stuff. We'll we'll send next month um any policy changes that are transportation related over to Misty and she we reviews those with anyone that um can drive a van or bus. >> Okay. >> They should be doing pre-check treat, >> right? But if they're just an assistant coach, like do they know that I'm driving this van, I have to check every time I'm leaving like check, you know, whatever. Not a bus driver. So, the van drivers don't need the B. They just need a regular driver's license. Is that right? >> Right. >> Yeah. They should be doing pre-checks anyway, though, >> right? But I mean, do you do that? I don't, you know, I'm just wondering if they know this is like something that they
>> MD does a good job having meetings and reviewing uh requirements and um trainings >> with anybody that's driving a vehicle, a district vehicle. And then I was also wondering do staff get the relevant updates on these like there was something about um supervising online posting student content like being supervised by like do do relevant staff members get updates for stuff like that like hey this is the policy that >> one every staff member has access to the changes that are being recommended with the link that Mr. gesture sends out on multiple occasions. So that's one. If they want to go after it to to take a look, they can and ask questions. >> Anything that's related to, let's say, something that would be under the direction of a of a principal, I would send
those to those principles separately and say, "Hey, make sure that you're, you know, you're advised with this change." And Mrs. Quick does a great job. anything that impacts teachers. I mean, she's overseeing all of it, but communicates any legal requirements. >> Gotcha. Okay. Thank you. >> Just one more question. I didn't think there was excused and unexcused absences anymore. I thought it was all just an absence. >> Mrs. Quick has really dove deep into this. There's still excused and unexcused, but remember chronic absenteeism incorporates all of those. But then the unexcused absences are what play into individual truency. So if it's unexcused, you can there's a threshold and then those absences would be the ones that are truency officer would be following up with families. Um the excused absences do not come into play when
it comes to official truency. Does that make sense? What's no longer separated out is the medical absences. Medical absences are are now part of excused absences which play into chronic absenteeism >> which do play into it. >> It's really confusing. >> That sucks. >> Well, because like I'm just thinking at the at the orthodontist. >> They're like, "Do you need a >> doctor's note? >> Do you need a doctor's note?" I'm like, "No, there's no point because we don't it doesn't matter, right? Or should I turn it in?" You should turn them in because after 10 medical absences without a doctor's note, then we have to start requiring them. So, if you just turn them in, it does matter. >> This is all work we're going to be doing. We're going to be sending out
lots of proactive communication to families. >> Send it to the board, too. >> It is very [laughter] It is very confusing. >> I'm literally >> We're going to be going through this in our full administrative meeting on Wednesday, too, with all of our building leaders. But that remember that while we're changing our policy full implementation from the state is is August of 2026 but we're going to do like more of a softer roll out um starting we have a meeting with our secretaries in January and then we'll start softly rolling this out to a lot. Okay. Um, again, if you have any other questions, we'll call Bruce. Um, moving on, can I get a motion to approve the employment and personnel consent items as presented in 9.01 resignations? 9.02 employment. And that's it. >> So
moved. >> Second. >> Okay. Does anybody have any questions or concerns or comments? >> No, they're all very good. >> We can field a full freshman soccer team and a JB team and a varsity team. I >> think we will. >> The boys addition to that means And I think like you know there's some other growing programs as well. You know what I mean? Wrestling is really you see the team picture from this weekend on social media. It's there's good numbers. So I think there's others that will need some additional you know as they're growing the same way. But yes I think to answer your question is yes I think boys soccer will continue. Not only is it continuing to to grow, Mr. Julie, they're they're having outstanding seasons under this new coach, and we
want to provide the support as long as they're continuing to develop our young men and women. And when they ask for a little bit more help to continue elevating the program, I want to support them. That's why the recommendations on the table. Great. Okay, roll call. >> Mr. McCartney, >> I have a question. >> Sorry, we're still >> So, for the space night coordinator, the two positions, are they getting a is that the are they getting the equivalent pay of a of a uh >> Assistant coach that >> I can I can tell you right now. Um, I'll tell you exactly what G would be, but um, I might have Mrs. Buyers or Mr. Walter speak about the amount of, uh, weeks and months and hours that go into this very special event for hundreds
of families. I did uh, talk to Nicole Loren about this. I was hesitant at first, but we have numerous uh staff members that are staying after and being paid an hour hourly rate to make sure this event goes off the way that we want it to. And it's more of a district savings to have these two positions, which we want to continue offering to our families than maybe the hourly rate for what it really takes to put this together. So, let me let me pull up [clears throat] what that would be. Did I explain that? Okay, Emily, >> that was great. So, just to just to clarify, so for this this event, which is now going to be bigger and it continues to grow. We had 1500 participants last year and that was up from
the 500 the year before. So, we're anticipating that to continue to grow. We actually start planning like a week or two after the event. So, it takes us an entire year to plan all of the events, coordinate all of the visitors and community members that come in and help us run stations. Um, so it's not just like a few things here and there. We have 54 stations that we planned for year ourselves for last year. But we also want to make sure with that we're covering the age range of preschool to to adult. So it's not just for specific but people. We want to make sure we're covering all of our community members within and surroundings. >> Okay. Roll call. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hulie. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Deweiler. >> Yes. >> Mot. >>
Yes. >> Mrs. Walker. >> Yes. >> Motion passes. >> Okay. Moving on to new business. May I have a motion to approve the trips as presented? That's a harmonier quarterfinals trip to Indianapolis, the softball uh trip to Panama City, and the baseball trip to um Memphis. So, move Second. >> Okay. >> How do they get there? Do we rent? They go on the school buses or >> uh baseball, they're taking two school vans and renting two school vans. Softball, it's the parents that take in all of the athletes. Uh it will be for the international championship high school acapella group, the harmonineers in their second year. They'll they'll take a school bus, but they're not spending the night. They're coming back same day. You said championship. >> I think that's what it is. >> Yeah.
>> Quarterfinals, >> right? But I >> mean, it's a competition. It might be competition. >> Okay. >> International competition of high school. >> Yeah. >> That's not what I You might be right. >> I want to go to that. >> I am going to it cuz Matty's involved. >> I was going to say it's heavy in it. >> Yeah. It's awesome. >> Fun. Okay. >> Think fits perfect. >> Yes. I love it. >> So, you should know, is it competition or championship? >> Anyway, >> uh I I think it's competition, but I'm not sure. >> Okay. >> Well, maybe you can report back to us. >> I I'll let you know next next month. >> All right. Um any other comments? Okay. Roll call. >> Mr. Vot, >> yes. >> Mr. McCartney, >> yes. >>
Mr. Hulley, >> yes. >> Mr. Stweiler, >> yes. >> Mrs. Walker, >> yes. >> Motion passes. >> Okay. Um, section 10.02, we need to name a president prom for the 2026 organizational meeting. That'll be the January regular board meeting. Um would not you >> I move son Walker. >> Yeah. Second. >> That's fine. >> It's just [laughter] right. Just the beginning. >> Call the meeting to order. That's the whole purpose. >> That's it. >> Great. Okay. >> Thanks. >> All right. Roll call. >> Mrs. Deweiler. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hulley. >> Yes. >> Mr. McCartney. >> Yes. Mr. O. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Walker. >> Sure. [laughter] >> Thank you. >> And uh the next regular board meeting is January 13th back to Tuesday. Thank you everybody for coming in on a Monday. And um
that's it. Can I get a motion to adjurnn? >> I'm sorry. The next meeting is at 5:00 p.m. at the high school. Go >> ahead. Second. >> Sorry. What's the motion? >> I move. >> Okay. Thank you. A second >> me. >> Okay. Thanks. All right. Mr. Stweiler, >> yes. >> Mr. Hulie, >> yes. >> Mr. McCartney, >> champion. Yes. Championship. Got it. Mr. Roto, >> thank you for looking that up. >> Mrs. Walker, >> yes. All right, we're injured.
