Yes. At this time we're on item number three and audience comments. We'll move on to item number four. >> Yep. So, first uh for our building department presentation, we have Mr. Carter from operations going to give a quick rundown on school operations. So the last time we were here volleyball was finals. Congrats to them which was amazing. And then we had the cross country team which was phenomenal. So the girls got second place overall and then individually stage ed. So, congrats to both of them. And then if you guys look over there at the two posters, the last time I talked to you guys about the student advisory group, we just got together talk about kind of what we wanted with the new student union and supplies got us back those two posters and we

did have a meeting last Wednesday and advisory groups and our ideers There were some parts that we didn't like on the top one. We didn't necessarily like the snake couch in the middle. We thought it would kind of become a lay down spot for students uncomfortable. And then there were some issues with the second one. So our idea is to take kind of a mix of both of those illustrations and kind of make what we would like to call >> it's just a black and white drawing like >> yes we also Mr. Carter got pricing for carpet Uh so we're looking to do that. That would be done in the summer months though. So this uh supplies is doing another rendering with the combination of what the kids liked. Uh also not in the picture,

but that one single door there goes into like a private right now it's being used as an office psychologist. Uh so we're looking at some point to pivot that to become a student like quiet space. So if there's a group of students working on a project or just a student who wants a quiet space to read a book uh or listen to music, they can go into there. That's what the space is for. Yeah, I would say most our students with open campus privileges are juniors and seniors. So, it's trying to attract those kids back instead of taking off for 40 minutes, staying on campus and hanging out with your peers. Uh, obviously, it's right outside the main entrance and it's a walkway, so there will be that lead into the space. Uh but again

having those juniors and seniors set that expect. Right now the focus is more about um like a student centered like free space more so than instructional space. We do have other spaces in the school that have um you know after band and choir are done first and second period. Those are two large spaces that could be used by teachers uh for group activities. So we have other spaces in the building that are accessible for those options. So this is really just open space for kids to hang out again. every day with that privilege. So, November development days and Monday, November 24th, we'll be hosting that day here at Um what I typically do is put an all out in October for ideas, thoughts, what if all those kind of fun things get in the mem

try to build a miniature conference reling our tiger grant award and they're coming to us from experience management sorry both Emily and have over 20 years of service in the field both from an HR organizational development side and then also as educators on our board member side and they're coming to us to talk about all things AI and a broad session that keynote session will have all of our staff and not just instructional staff so it'll be good to set the tone of all the things. Um Emily and Stephen are also going to host two breakout sessions and what I left at your place um is the menu if you will as I've been calling it today. All the breakout sessions that we'll be hosting um we'll host 10 sessions at a time over three

different hours of the day. like a lunch break. Um and then in the afternoon will be working together for example that's all happening on Monday. Usually in the past we split that out over Monday and Tuesday but with holidays all the things. Um we're going to do all of that on Monday and then on Tuesday in the morning staff will be in their building that still works on a list of items we have for them. And then in the afternoon they'll be doing public school that are all required of all the things a lot. So very excited by how many of our staff members volunteer to facilitate sessions. said, "I don't exactly. I'm not an expert in this, but I'd like to get some people like these things." And I said, "Absolutely. That's great. Our

new teacher pickle ball get a broad community bringing which is pretty awesome. So, I just appreciate everybody's help. You're all welcome to come. It's going to be great. Yes, it's also adults and what to do with students, right? So, you'll see some of the teacher leader kind of things that you know what we doing with kids to teach them, you know, I don't want to say right correct ways to use it to use it if you will. And as we tiptoe into it a little bit more than what is Okay. Uh before I get to the agenda, I just want to talk about two items. Uh the first would be last week on Wednesday night, we had I held a parent listening session. Uh and so really this came out of some feedback from parents

about the way students were interacting with each others. Uh so it was framed out as positive peer interactions. They were provided the prompts in advance. There were free like discussion prompts. Um so turnout was good. Uh 18 plus parents were there. So that was uh much better especially when I think about some of our facility uh committee or facility open community events that we had. Um and really they in small groups they talked about those concepts and then there was a large group we uh debriefed on that and the administrative staff that was there. It was all the principles Dr. Donald, uh, Miss Christopher from Director of Student Services there. Uh, and we really left with some ideas on how we can do things better, uh, ideas on, you know, what some of our gaps

are and ways that we can, uh, better engage parents helping us with the work. So already today, uh, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, Mr. Dowy had grade level meetings with them, sort of reset the expectations for cafeteria, uh, made some changes there, and then some additional changes are coming as we go. I know PD day, he's going to have staff meet to talk about concepts of PBIS and professional points that kids earn. So, a lot of good things came out of that and I was uh again very happy with the parents that attended the feedback that we got and it was productive. So, um so you know I thank the community or the parents for that opportunity. The other item not on the agenda but worth talking about is um this the campus safety issue

that we had really Friday after school into today. Uh I just want to thank uh the administration for act being active and u proactive in that so we could respond working with local law enforcements here tonight. U but they had a significant presence on campus without being invasive uh but creating that um additional layer of security and uh support for us. Um the investigation on the school end is concluded and we definitely know that there there's no more than a typical risk uh as we get ready for school tomorrow. So um so that is good and again I just want to thank the police department for their response and navigating through that. Uh then that leads to the agenda item um agenda items. The one is the SIPA protection. So that's internet protection for students.

It's a requirement for rate funding funding that helps us buy technology uh services and products. Uh letter B is the SROU. And so again, Chief Graham and I work on that together back and forth making sure that the uh definitely is more clear in the expectation of services, responsibilities and protections for both the provider and the entities that uh the providers serve both here on PD and here on city school. So um looking forward to that that clarity. A lot of the uh language is already in action and then this is just formalizing that uh moving forward. Then we have personnel items for certified, classified and supplemental some sports. Well, some activities and sports happening this fall. Any questions? Do you want to share anything? How about the >> You don't have no pressure. Just

thank you for allocating resources administration. Yes. So I'll tee it up. Uh the first item curriculum material complaint. So in our board policy we have language about the process to submit a complaint against curriculum material curriculum or instruction material and I just want to thank the come up and present. Uh she followed the process. So she started with the teacher uh then she worked up to the principal and then it came to my office. She allowed time for curriculum review committee to meet digest her complaint review and then give me guidance on a decision. I rendered a decision provided it and then as the board policy states you're not satisfied with that decision. So that leads us up here to tonight. And so we welcome Thank you very much for taking policy to say instructional

materials. The board also recognizes And so I guess I guess the first question. So this is the second I believe it again. They feel that something's daughter. suffer. I I understand questions. Yes. So um in doing our research we found that the last time the book list will adopted back in 2012. So this book has been on that list for some time and as it was adoped for the seventh grade class at that time or 12th grade. Yes. So the question of how it moves around as I understand from the department is that people out of that department they one um for student engagement they found that it was reported that readers was a foraged at that age so they stuck with it just to see you know what others have we Um, should we

take a look at it? Is it time to add those kind of also horizontally and vertically align? So, for example, right now is also our sixth grade, right? thinking about different level of maturity. So I'm just my question comes from you know heavy at least intense and I think equal equal opportunity as well. other school that is also in Afghanistan. So I guess I guess this to me difficulty in trying to personal that was glad to see and then grateful for all of the times research articulate process because Saturday afternoon. So I went over to the mall and bought it 24 hours. I also looked at American Library Library Services. This book in particular actually won an award. Every year they list 10 books as the best books of the past year. Books that were

written in adult literature but very young. I checked another common perspective looking at sources that I used regardless of like my own feeling when I'm looking at what experts are saying the from the committee member library. I appreciate that it took me through this entire bec uncomfortable and there were some things to put in the syllabus and it really didn't just remember that the teacher told us that they topics and anything that I think to me honor what you making for your child. You know, as for the idea of not talking about child abuse or child sexual abuse. You're literally mandated by the state law in 2022 mandated kindergarten all the way. So the idea that we're not going to talk about it Correct. Just based on that alone, right? So changing personel is out

there. So yes through 12th grade they are the most novel based works. Um, and so that um I don't know that they can finish in an hour and a half, nor do I know that I want them to finish in an hour and so that will be their main task to review that and start making Michael January. The honors class. saying I want to be mindful the fact that you've got teachers prepared based on this decision break agree with all the points about process improvement I think from the appeals process may consider staying within the process laid out in the policy but knowing that there's a contin I do think exercise and if nothing else there's opportunities that are available for I think what we're trying to do is find a comfort level that's going

to be really difficult for I think the rape of the little girls are not literature watching World War II or shield them from everything. So I in the issue that we trust our educators. We do our research and then at some point we approve a curriculum that our teachers rely on and prepared to we have to be prepared to like stand by that constantly review it make sure we're right and then if it's not right for I creat system where our teachers are like short order and whoever wants to do assignment you let them know I don't know how they would I don't know how they would grade that I don't know how you would ask a teacher to to manage that type of so I I just ra that that concerns me a bit

if we fell into that kind of process where we tried to find something that really made every single family I just don't know a goal that we can reasonably reach. I see the process a lot of thought and I think a lot of respect I think on our you know on our staff sidec We do. Right. There's on the floor. Sorry, we've It is right now said policy already. We already have I will feel this personally. I feel like I have certain So that gives her >> I would agree. Although I think with the commitment but the commitment of Julie and her team to conduct this review and then I agree I think to make this decision at this point and we do have you know 13 years of teaching this book to kind of

fall back on, you know, evaluate. So, I I mean, I'm inclined to go ahead and put a motion on the best way to do that if it's just either appealed or denied, right? I don't think too much >> and and the department has already drafted what they feel is better communication one page specific specifically about this book in a letter format to reissue. I'll move that to sustain the appeal would be to overturn what our parent staff committee decided. We can deny the appeal to agree with the I just put it toain that decision. for what it kind of formal but I mean it would be one thing and it was approved for 12th 12th grade seems pretty pretty minimal in terms of themes and level of maturity. Do it again. to take a vote

on the app. And so the appeal if we're sustaining the appeal to sustain the appeal that would be Mrs. If you deny the appalense I didn't know. I didn't know where it was. The honors class is reading it. Second semester will be the general With great respect, I deny great respect for the work of the committee. business. Chris, I know at least personally I I've always had a concern about putting any type of significant finan on the ballot in May. I think it's not that often used amount of voters making a decision that impacts the entire community. So for what it's worth to me is I would personally have concerns about vote in May. Zero concerns obviously March is that timeline but zero concerns with a November or March if it's a general election but

anything special. >> Yeah. Just just to clarify, Ohio now has only two really two election cycles. November and spring. I say spring because Ohio does the game of typically it's in May but they want to be relevant with primary presidential elections that they move those earlier in the years that it's primary presidential primary election. So there's really only two two times. So that's spring and then I think there was for a le to be formed but and we have people in the wings we had discussions with people who were willing to put their time committee we even met once but they didn't want toward any So now we're kind of caught and I think the ask is to just do enough with this board so that the work doesn't get lost and the next board

can continue it should primary I agree. That's my >> scenario where this board or the January board could to your point of like who's the chicken, right? Like I get it that they wanted to signal support for a bond or something of that nature but set it out to for example uh timeline so that you would get your kind of like board support and then the committee. But I think the reality is we talked about this summer is that the amount or take right amount of money and the amount of work and information and education that would go into getting the community to understand what the ask is be able to be heard. I think at least at least what I expressed at the time was a concern that a four or five month time

frame was probably not enough time to do all of that heavy lifting no matter how good your committee is and we're seeing that we saw million I think it was like 30 million and they just got down before I there's a way to do it but with a longer a longer timeline if that's what a committee needs to see and I get the idea what you're saying is true wait timeline anyway expiration date. >> Yeah. So, [clears throat] I did talk with council about that and they said you can do them earlier but not too much earlier because they need to have uh the numbers for mill but um you know so going six months in advance they did They actually said they wouldn't they wouldn't do that. They wouldn't draft those resolutions for us.

Um going two months earlier than the cut off they said that could be. >> So then I guess alternatively so understood. So alternatively could the board then pass some sort of resolution short of an actual like bond approval that signal you know whatever whatever needs to be. But again, you know, whatever the committee needs to get like, hey, yeah, the board would love if somebody is realistically thinking me, I would say, yeah, that's definitely possible. did that uh they passed a like ceremonial resolution and then the next month they passed the formal first resolution then the third month they passed the second resolution that's required uh so really that is possible uh I would say that um this board has a decision point of this entire discussion that's being had if there's not a resolution

in December the first resolution This discussion can't even be had by the new board in January. If this board passes the first resolution in December, then it opens up this conversation much like we did in April and May. This uh past uh well this calendar year uh we passed the first resolution and then after some discussion the second one was not acted upon and so we weren't on the ballot. Um, so that's really if this board wants to position the new board for that discussion, this board would have to pass that first resolution in >> May. Potential May and then the new board. Yeah. Then the new board coming in January to say, "Hey, like this May concept just doesn't work for us, so we're not going to move forward." This doesn't that resolution December.

They can only be talking about my thought and certainly I know none of this is concept but to give everybody a chance to dive in and really get their arms about the work that's been done questions they may have. I hate to put that on team board members who beginning of January and then yeah, hey, what's your thought on $9 million two weeks later? That seems like an awful decision for what it's worth to to put and I also like I don't think you can move any faster than November and even that I think it's going to be fast when you think about the amount of the monumental task of convincing people in this current state of worldion. It's huge. I I hope we can, you know, I hope we can get there. We know

that our building something's got to be done. Something's got to get by. I don't want to speak for Mike, but I would like some guidance from the board tonight as far as what would be expected from my I don't think that you really don't think that I think that continues to have value. I certainly appreciate all the work and the time everybody put into it. you know, at least clear options and direction on how to choose one board, you know, that way. So, I don't I don't think for whatever I don't see any of that is wasted. It's just now the decision point is a whole bunch of things, some of which well's control, right? Watching what's happening with the state legisle and everything that's happening when it comes to how money can be raised

and taxed going forward. there's a lot and I just I really do think this is one of those things where you get kind of one chance to get it get it right but I don't I don't see any of the work you guys do is wasted and I hope you don't feel that way I hope for the day where we can questionally sessions that are members, but I'm wondering and what I'm curious who practice this type of school, school finance law, what in the world is that going to school districts, let alone because I just don't remember I don't remember an environment where people are actively seeking the tax base with zero alternative Thank you. Yeah, that's good. Yes. Yes. Yes. I don't know for those of you that's not meeting
