001All right. We welcome everybody here to our board meeting tonight. We're going to start out with the pledge of allegiance followed by a prayer. >> I alian to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Heavenly Father, we thank you this evening for the multitude of things that you've done for us. The many blessings that you've poured into our lives and talents and abilities that you've given us tonight with grateful hearts. Lord, we want to say thank you for the opportunity for the ability to serve and the community in which we serve and students and staff and everything else, Father, that we are able to to have an influence in tonight. God, we ask that you

002would be in this meeting, that you would give us understanding and wisdom, that we would operate according to what you would have for us, the best for our school and our community and our staff. Father, we pray that you would just bless this meeting and that all that we do would honor you and magnify you. And we pray it in Jesus name. Amen. Thank you, Jeff. Future board meetings, our next one's not until May 26th. Then we have June 9th and July 14th. All here at this building at 6 o'clock. There were a few items of revision to agenda under donations and I think >> HR uh public recognition. We have several donations again. So we'll get a motion in a second at the end of that. Uh we got a recommendation to approve $50

003from Nelson Dyson for Northville Baseball. Recommendation to approve $1,000 from Chase Vineyard for Southwood youth football. Recommendation to approve $1,000 from Thorn Insurance for Southwood youth football. Recommendation to approve $2,000 from Bingo Charity Wash Elks Lodge 471 for Southwood youth football. recommendation to approve thousand donation from Donald and Beverly Raal for Southwood youth football. Recommendation to approve $500 from Ed and Carla Cha for Southwood youth football. I guess that is it. We get a motion and second to approve all these generous donations. So move second. >> Got a motion and second to approve these donations. All in favor say I. I. Any opposed? And again, we are always grateful for all these donations that help these programs to move forward every year. School recognition. >> Yeah, just to have one on here from uh one

004of our building principles, uh Mrs. Amber Lewis at Southwood. Would like to recognize the Southwood High School track team. They re received an exemplary behavior report from uh Mr. Alan Wright, one of the starters at the Eastbrook Track Invitational on April 17th. Throughout the meet, the athletes from Southwood were very respectful towards the meet officials. They were always ready when it came time for them to participate in their event. They also encouraged their teammates and also their opponents before, during, and after each race. Their good sportsmanship was on display through the meet. Uh I believe their administration, coaches, and community should be proud of the way they carried themselves from the start of the meet until the last event was finished. for these reasons, I would like to nominate them for at least employee award.

005So, that's nice to hear uh from somebody outside uh of the the district uh recognizing the efforts and the hard work um by some of our student athletes and coaches. The only other thing I'll mention is I was able to attend both Southwoods prom a couple weeks ago and then Northfield's prom last weekend. Uh very nicely done. uh just want to uh thank the prom sponsors that participate in that. I know parents also play a role in that as far as the afterp prom is concerned. That was a little past my bedtime so I didn't go to any after but u going there and just seeing that the time and effort that they put into to provide a good experience for our students uh is nice and you know I see a lot of the

006same faces there when I go to Southfield Prom and go to North Oak Prom which is interesting. Everybody has different dresses on and so I can't imagine that the money that's being spent for some of that stuff. But anyway, I just wanted to thank them for their efforts regardless to prom. I'll ask M since Mr. Snider's here if there's anything he has on his end. >> Not really. Everything was going good. >> Okay. >> Just have some new teachers here. >> We'll get to that in a little bit. >> That prom's over though. >> Yes. I I I move that schools should move that start time up so that after prom doesn't go so late as a parent. >> Well, that's all voluntary. >> You know, you got to be like high on caffeine or

007something. Stay away till 2:00. Anyway, it was very enjoyable. I appreciate those kids and you're all good kids up in the program. All right, public comment, agenda items only. If not, we will move on to our agenda items. Uh, can I get a motion, second to approve our regular meeting minutes on April 14th? >> So move. >> Second. >> No. Motion, second to approve those meeting minutes. All in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? uh financial reports, claims, and payroll number 19. All right, payroll number 19 uh is back to normal after we paid some coaches and some of those other ECA uh stipens last payroll. So, it's more in line with what you're used to seeing. And then claims again uh there I don't know three or four different expenses related to our

008Southwood project uh come out of that uh bond that we did. So everything else pretty well normal questions. >> What's that intersect for the Chromebooks? like 25. >> Yeah. Well, it's there's like $9,000 and I just Yeah. 25 Chromebooks. So, we did we buy more or did we what? Do you know what that is? I think those are licenses for those. I think I'm not pos from time to time. we've had to buy Chromebooks for um the students that maybe don't have a device that use our bridge program. And so the Chromebooks are a little bit of a cheaper device than what we would offer our traditional students and so sometimes we have to replace those. >> Yeah. So the the description is 25 Chromebooks with Google Chrome license. So I assume that's what they

009purchased was this. >> Anybody else have any questions on claims or payroll? Motion second to approve that. >> I'll move to approve. >> Second. >> Got a motion, a second to approve claims of payroll number 19. All in favor say I. Any opposed? financial summary. >> That's really all I have. Um we'll get to talk about some other numbers in a little bit. >> Okay, if that's all with that financial report, we move on to HR. Got one resignation. Taylor Zimmerman, social studies teacher at Northfield High School and that's effective at the end of this school year. underneath. Ruth Ays, English teacher, Northco High School, effective 810. Lisa Hobs, English teacher, North High School, effective 810. Brian Paul, assistant football coach, Southwood High School, coaching, that's effective immediately. Shelby Hawkins, substitute teacher for all schools,

010effective 12. Gloria Warner, English teacher. North High School effective 810. Brian Milikin, assist of football, Southwood High School. That's effective immediately. Tracy Kennedy, s summer secretary, Northfield High School, effective 62. Amanda Watson, summer secretary, Northville High School, effective 61. That's Yeah, I think that's South Amber. So that's for South Desiree Garrett, assistant chair, North Hill High School. That's effective immediately. And Rick Willoughby, assistant football for Southwood High School and that's effective immediately. We have one transfer and that's at Northfield. Ryan Soft is transferring from English to social studies and that's effective 810. A motion and a second to approve our HR report. >> Second. >> Got a motion and a second to approve our HR. All in favor say I. >> Are there any opposed? >> All right. We congratulate a few sitting here. >>

011Can uh Mr. Snider, if you mind, uh >> I don't know if Mr. Snyder told you, but we have 10 questions for each of you. I was going to say that before you already approved him, but we already approved you. So, I guess we can't ask these questions. So, I as >> Can we use notes? >> So, I guess I just asked Mr. Snder to introduce these these ladies that will be joining our family here at >> Yeah, be happy to and explain kind of where their positions will be. So, first of all, Brian Sco taught English. He was on the interview committee that helped me interview. And then Taylor Zimmerman going back to Ohio with family. So, he's not leaving of being upset with anything. It's just where him and his wife's from and

012they have some family issues and they just want to be closer to home, which I know we all get that. So, Brian Syncro has a social studies license, too. And he said with Taylor leaving, I'd be interested. So that's why we have three English teachers here. So >> Ryan's not leaving. He's just going to the social studies department. So then Tammy Schaefer I inherited because sixth grade is coming to Northville next year. So with Tammy Schaefer's retirement, um Ruth Bears is going to take that sixth grade language arts job. So I really just had two. See, one in sixth grade would have been Joel's, but since sixth grade's coming to Northfield next year, then I hired that one. So, and then Lisa Hobbs is going to be basically um going for Denise Ster's retirement. So,

013she'll have a lot of juniors, upper classmen. Um and then Gloria will be doing a couple classes of seventh grade and some ninth grade um just to replace Ryan Synra. So, that's how that's all going to work out. So, we are happy to have all of them. We're so lucky because I've had English jobs posted in the past and it's hard to find licensed 5 through 12 English teachers. Nobody's on any emergency licenses here and they've all been teaching 10 or more years. So, >> so where are you all from? >> Peru. >> I'm also from Peru. >> Okay. >> Manchester. >> So, we're stealing the surrounding. >> Is that what's that? >> We're stealing. Yes, >> that's all right. >> They applied. So, >> yeah. >> So, we had a good round of uh

014interviews. We can keep up. >> Welcome. >> Hope you can work with my sister. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Got a little connection. >> Everybody talks. They know I do. That's good. >> Yeah, especially when it comes in. >> Yeah, we welcome you and hope that you can be a good influence on those or kids. >> It's always a hard subject to teach. >> So, excellent. Well, you want to let them go if they want to or >> you're free to stay or you're free to go. That's totally up to you guys. We appreciate you coming tonight and being a part of this. It's always good to put a name with a face. So, thank you guys. >> Thank you. >> It's a good exit time if you don't want to stick around. >> You're welcome

015to join us. >> Thank you. >> See you later. >> Well, it's good to see you. >> All right, we'll move on to report. Uh, Hartland. Yes. U, we had one resignation. And I don't know whether I messaged a while back. Pete Dupont. He's a teacher well supervisor of student services. We hired his replacement Jared Heiden. His brother works over here. So it's going to be a good thing. And Pete works with all the counselors around trying to recruit and stuff like that. Pete's a good guy and tough shoes to fill. uh they had teachers appreciation grant and they had a rubric to divvy it up and three teachers got it and they all they got a $3,500 stipen so it worked out nice for them. Uh they got their approval for the Perkins grant.

016That's something we get every year. It was 109,000 and last year it was 116,000. So, it's going to take a little more out of us possibly, but that funds a lot of things through there. Uh, donations. Alro Steel donated four 4x8 sheets of sheet metal to practice for the collision for cars and stuff like that and stuff to weld. Sick, which I don't know. sensor group and they're located in South Carolina and they sent $13,000 worth of sensors donated for the kids to work on different things. So that's pretty amazing that it comes from down there. Uh Mr. Duncan offered a vehicle, a 2013 Chevy Cruz, McDougall, a 2011 Dodge Dakota. And those may be fix up to give to kids in the future depending if they can get around or whatever. And Austin Pep

017and Brock, a roof contractor, donated $1,000 to the schools. So, they get a lot of good donations. and I'll send around the list of people that were there for the open house for the students for their career day. >> And they will have their open house their construction on May 14th at 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. if you want to go look at that. And senior certificate honor program is May 18th at 7 p.m. >> that time. >> I know. like those sensors. What class would these do? >> I'll have to get that. There's a computer class. >> That's what I wonder. >> I just >> That's what it is. >> That's a lot of money. >> Yeah. >> Anything else? >> That's it. >> Superintendent. >> Yeah. Just uh sharing a few things. Uh obviously

018it's hiring season, so we have a lot of that taking place. uh just planning for next year already when it comes to some of those staff uh hires and transitions. Uh we're also starting to take a look at our our handbooks uh and current policies that may be affected by any laws that have changed or go into effect July 1. And so we'll probably bring to you next May at well our only board meeting in May the first readings of those. Obviously, the big one is is working and finalizing what that cell phone policy will look like. Um, wanted to mention uh just something I thought that was really a cool event. Uh, Laura Langy Bartles uh went to uh Wash County had a community baby shower. I believe it was last weekend. And so

019she attended that and had a booth there uh to share information about just uh early education as you know parents start thinking about that even as early as once they start having kids. And so she was able to attend that. I just wanted to kind of show you some pictures because I thought it was really neat and she really enjoyed her time. U she was even able to make a nice little AI coloring book. uh for families that came there that shows a polar bear and a night uh play playfully playing in there. And uh they had some giveaways and so created a little giveaway package of reading materials uh in and animal dolls. And then u the other thing that I thought was really nice was uh some of the materials that she was

020able to hand out. And so just information about early learning opportunities that we provide at MSD as well as some learning tips that came from some of our MSD experts. And I'm not going to go through all of those, but you have, you know, principles and teachers and counselors uh from our earliest grade levels just giving them some advice to families on on um starting that learning process early. So, so I just wanted to share that. And then lastly, uh again, since we only have one meeting in May, that will butt up pretty close to graduation. So, just as a reminder, graduation will be on May 31st. Uh Northfield is at 1:30, Southwood is at 4:00 and then Whites will be at 6:30. So, if you don't have that on your calendars, I'll keep sending

021out reminders. That's all I have from a superintendent report. >> All right, great. >> Yeah. Uh, first we have groupies that follow us on Facebook Live and uh, one of them was Cheryl Staer who wanted to comment on the 25 Chromebooks. She says those were to replace uh, the Chromebooks that were lost at the corn family fire. Joanna Corn employee had >> Oh, that is correct. Because she had some Chromebooks that are used for to other things and it got caught in that and rather than wait for the insurance and all of that stuff to spill through. They needed a Chromebook sooner and so that was that purchase. >> So, we want to thank Cheryl Ster at home for >> she was listening attention listening. I don't know if we can get like a gold

022star or something on the thing, but so thank you, Cheryl. And then Matt brings up Pete and that's a huge huge loss. Great guy. Everybody knows him. Well respected and that's difficult in our world because schools compete, programs compete, and Pete was somebody that everybody could appreciate and trust. Just he was just a great face for our hard strong character, very nice and just known as that, right? So it really really makes I would never say it to his face, but it's got it's going to be hard to replace it with a good uh so now to my report. Uh we uh brought to the board uh reading curriculum four actually more than four weeks ago. Uh we put them out for public preview. We do have one member of the community that I think

023most of you are familiar with who does take the time to read through the materials. And I would argue she might read them closer than sometimes we do ourselves. And so, uh, she gave good feedback. It was all supportive. Um, I think as we're saying that her main concern, she read some things that included readings that were critical or made you question things about America or about Thanksgiving and she just wanted to make sure that our teachers presented a balanced outlook and maintain that patriotic experience. And I assure her that I know talking to Jay and Amber that that is not going to be a problem. And so I think it's worth saying that that is our community and our culture. We're proud of our country. That doesn't mean we do it blindly, but we

024do appreciate it. And so yeah. Uh and so she looked over all that stuff and gave us good feedback. Um and so I will be presenting. I see here on the agenda only one aspect of that got through, but we've presented all of those. So, we'll do into literature, the art of public speaking, and then there's a novels list, too, that's on the back of my sheet. And so, just remember, we have a long list of already approved novels. These are just newer novels that teachers wanted to update or change. And so, we just add those to that list. It's not like we're redo the list every um Yeah. So, I guess this would be a good time if you have any questions about that or the process. Uh I I told Jay's teachers uh

025that they're getting hired at the right time because we're starting new curriculum. Uh and one of them said she was familiar with this. This was the same one that Peru had chosen. Glory Gloria said this and so um so that other schools around this ch it's on the ID approved list and all. So then I also pointed out we have uh we have an explosion of dual credit offerings with our retirees. We don't always bring in teachers that have same master level credential that can teach dual credit. Um Jay actually brought in one that is going to get close to offering that >> we'll do it here. >> She has to get into that. So that means we'll be offering IU dual credit at Northfield. Probably not this year. So this year's group's going to

026kind of have to take the AP route. Next year they'll have the choices. Uh, but all three of those there are at Southwood. Actually, Payton's at both, North and South. >> Uh, but Jessica Jones calculus, of course, at Northfield, Jessica Brewbaker. No, Hannah, thank you. Hannah Brewaker is already doing dual credit calculus, but when Rob Cole retired, it took us a while to build that up. Jessica's doing that. And you can see Kim Mc is moving to chemistry. So, usually their courses are free through IU. Um, IU has its own set of grants that they cover that. We as a district try to help cover books and other incidental fees to encourage people to do that because we really like it when you can offer those great credit options. Really thankful for those teachers and

027I expect next year to have probably another two or three on a really good fortunate fortunate for Jada. Lisa has two masters, but IUK said she needs one more. It was a master's in secondary ed and a master's in library sciences or something. They wanted her to have a master's in. It's like are you kidding me? So we submitted it and they said well she does AP here takes and she she said she'd be willing to do that. So we'll get her. We just very fortunate. So any questions about the dual credits and >> our AP testing numbers will be strong too. >> We'll still be very strong. So, just to speak to that a little bit, like the a the IU English, IU English we give to our seniors. Uh our juniors, our advanced

028juniors will take the AP English. And so, we try to blend it as much as we can. Um IU gets real picky. They don't want dual credit and AP at the same time, but sometimes we sneak that in. Um but we try to give kids the options as much as we can. So this should not reduce that APR is what I hear you asking. >> Yes, that's kind of what I was asking. I guess indirectly >> not the intent. It's always difficult. We let kids choose some of those courses and so some kids might choose one way, but we do our best to encourage them to do what's best all not just for the and Kevin like must have read my academic update because that's what's next. Uh, sometimes I tell you we're testing and

029I just thought you would like to see the list. All of those tests will be administered at some building or another over the next four weeks. So t the testing when you get the results for that is a that's a million dollar question because like the I learn biology we have found that if we give that early enough we can tell kids if you score whatever on this test we'll give it to you as a final exam grade right to give kids kind of reason to buy Yeah, >> but that's only if you get the grades back in time. So, we're hoping within two weeks >> that the way in within two weeks. >> Great idea. >> But like AP, you won't AP we won't get those first till July, but the I learn the

030one statements they're telling us two weeks and so that's what we're trying to and so far it's been that way. Cool. And with the new accountability model, these will obviously impact how that looks moving forward the school districts across the state. So yeah. Yeah. like that's only if you get screwed back. So, uh and then at the bottom of that then was that list of extra so later on we do that even though it's not that's what I'll ask for your approve on. >> Thank you. All right, we will move into new business. We have a recommendation to approve big bid packages for Southwood Elementary and Southwood Junior High School that we received. Does everybody have a chance to look at those? Any questions or anything on those bid packages? >> Brian or Neil? I

031don't know if there's anything that you want to Is there anything that you want to >> I I can kind of give a rough Yeah, I can say a couple notes. >> Okay. >> So, I appreciate it. Thank you guys for having me. with YAM. I've met most of you. Um GMP, which is what we're looking at, our executive summary is our guaranteed maximum price for Southwood. I'll just say we're really pleased with how things came in. We're about 1 to 3% variance from the last budgeting did. So, we had a lot of good involvement from potential biders. We've got our our list finalized down and those are the numbers you see here. So, um good participation and pleased with the numbers. Again, I I think we came in at 16 point what were we

03216.6 on elementary and 19.8 on the high school. So, we're 364 overall. Um got to sit down with uh Kevin and and Dr. and Scott last week and go through some of this and it looks like we're going to recommend um the alternates that you see there. So if you peel those alternates out, got a lot of good value from those ad alternates um that that are also being recommended to be incorporated in the project. So again, happy with the numbers. Thanks for having us. We're we're pleased with everything that came in and and thanks for the partnership and extending to the Southwood projects. Brian, thanks to your team. So I guess I'll close with that. I can answer any questions on this if anybody's got >> Thanks, Neil. Yep. >> I should have asked

033the other day. I didn't think of a bunch of things, but you always have to have a question. >> He always has tough ones. >> Not a tough one. We were concerned about that subsurface drainage holding area. Is that incorporated into the Fox bid then? >> It is. Okay. >> Yeah. >> Along with demolition. Correct. So the CTE existing is in the earthwork demolition package and then that underwater storage storm water retention is also included. It changed up a little bit. It went I forget exactly what the final product is. It was the chamber system. Is it still >> I have to look up exactly what we >> it's there. It operates >> correct and it's got the green field site over the top. We're going to protect those barricades. We won't drive on it,

034but um yeah, that's incorporated. Kevin, >> since we may approve the tonight, hopefully the alternate of the wastewater treatment plant replacement line. I didn't know if that had an outlet into that system somehow in that direction and we avoid obviously putting that water into waste water treat. But I didn't know how that >> I don't think so. I think there's drainage in the new parking area that's picking up and then the storm drainage from the roofs on the new CTE and what we're doing on the um kind of the gym expansion. I think that that is independent going to the wastewater treatment and I didn't get an answer on sizing for that but I'm still chasing that there. You know, I'd like to just so the board knows as a whole that Brian and Neil

035have been excellent to work with. I feel they listen to us, which is a very important thing. Been happy with what building is looking like. I mean, Jay was bragging the other night at Dennis that I think when it's done, it's going to be a nice piece of property. stuff out there that's people are going to like to use and it's going to pull together pretty good >> and they don't just listen up at the beginning. They listen through the whole process and problem solve and figure things out as we did. It's been good. They've been good to work. That's a testament to your team as well. You guys have been excellent. We appreciate owners that are engaged and stepped in and problem solving help us out. So appreciate you guys involved and board. >>

036All right. >> Yeah. So I guess I would just make the recommendation based off of the uh bid package of uh that we received to approve the uh Southwood Elementary project and Southwood High School. I did have one question. Steelers back >> those come next week. >> Yeah. So on the 5th we've got elementary steel and then on six the very next day at 2 o'clock here we'll have the roofing for the high school. That was the one caveat I was Yeah. Those are coming in next week. >> Okay. You're confident we're going to get some. >> So I I am confident we're going to get some competitive bids in more than one. And we do have old numbers in your those packages now. And we it's not overly conservative, but we see those numbers

037driving down. And when we reconcile, you guys um seeing some of that some of those dollars come back. So, yep. >> I'll make the motion to approve recommendation for the bid packages. >> Second. >> A motion and second to approve the bid packages for Southwood Elementary and Southwood Junior High School. All in favor say I. Hi. >> Any oppose? Motion passes. All right. Sure. Mr. Drake, we got a recommendation to approve the intro literature from HM for grades 6 through 12 ELA. And that will also include the online speaking and those discuss the things that were just accept. Got a motion to accept the uh literature for HMH and for grades 6 through 12 ELA. All in favor say I. Any opposed? And last is a field trip recommendation to approve out of state field

038trip for Northfield AP physics, AP chemistry, and calculus students to Cedar Point physics, science, and math day, Thursday, May 14th. So motion second to approve the field trip for Northfield. All in favor say I. Any opposition business board policy public comment items for board members. If there's nothing else, we will adjourn.
