001We welcome everybody here to our board meeting here tonight. We're going to start out with the pledge of allegiance followed by a prayer. >> I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Our father in heaven, we are indeed glad we're able to meet here together. There is board members and community members and leaders of the administration, the school district. We're grateful for the summer that we've had, the moisture that we've had, the heat, and all the safety that we each enjoy. We uh ask at this time as we uh know that there are struggles throughout throughout this world and the Middle East and in Europe, especially here in Texas. We ask you

002to please watch over these people that are suffering that need thy help, need thy hope and thy love. We ask you to please bless them and ask that we may be an assistance in any way that we can from the far distance. We ask that we meet here tonight that we may speak and do those things which would be pleasing unto thee. That we may make decisions that are right for this this school district. That we may do things that will help the kids in this district to to receive the best education possible. We say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. All right. Um, first of all, we like to welcome two guys here, Chris and Travis. New faces and different or one one same face but different position. Welcome to

003our new positions and look forward to working with you guys. Uh, we have future board meetings. the one here in July, we we cancelled that July 22nd due to not enough people able to come. Our next one will be August 12th and then August 26. There are a few revisions to the agenda all under HR. We move on to public recognition. We have some uh donations which we'll wait till the end to get those approved all at once. Got a recommendation to approve $1,465 donated by Rhett Mass for track record board for Northfield. Recommendation to approve a $500 donation from McKelp Seeds for youth football for Northfield. Recommendation to approve $100 donation from Charles and Sharon Sharon Sidell for youth football for Northfield. recommendation to approve uh $15,475 um for youth football for Northfield. And

004then I've got a list here. Got it. >> Yeah. >> Let me see. It's not here. All right. Hoffman Nursery. I'm not going to go through the amounts. We're just going to let name all the names. Hoffman's Nursery, Agra, Kim, Clearwater Systems, West Plains Mining, Robert and Robert Robin Shepard, Dyson Farms, Thorn Insurance, Stephen, Cassie Gman, Brian and Michelle Rice, Rice, sorry, Rod and Robin Merrick, Lindseay Culver, Lenny, Lenny and Donna Stout, John and Regina Davis, uh, Gulan Lawnmower Sales, Brett Mass, Danielle Whitetman, Brandy Greer, Cottage Creations, Don and Kayla Black, Machinery Girl Trucking, Tim Adams Insurance, Floor Egg, Todd Adams Insurance, Illuminate LLC, Tresco Brothers Escavating, David and Debbie Williams, Keith and Megan Laner, David Row, Chris and Carrie Schultz, Nicholas and Megan Crone, the Andersons, Wash Furniture, H H&K Record Service, Troy Exavating,

005Es and Sunb Dozing, Intrac Technologies, Columbia City Optometry, Hartland RMC, Shepard Chevrolet, and Kindle Group. That is a total of $15,475. We get a motion and second to approve all these donors. So, move >> second. Got a motion and second to approve these donations. All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any oppose? And just by that list, um obviously Northfield football, I think they've had some changes with youth programs and stuff and so equipment for football is very expensive and um just anything our community steps up to fill a need that needed to be taken care of. So, we greatly appreciate all those people that donated this to that program. >> I don't think we have any school recognition or staff. >> There's a couple Well, there's a couple things I just want to

006mention is just again just wanted to wish Mike the best of luck in his retirement. Uh it was a a sad day to see him leave, but he's got good things planned ahead for him and his family. And wanted to welcome Travis. It's nice to to have Travis in the office. Travis just got back from a a great vacation it looked like and so we're glad to have him on board with us now. So I really appreciate that. I want to give you also just a kind of recognition about uh summer school. We finished up summer school uh at the end of June uh a few days in July actually. And I don't think people understand what is all involved to make summer school go. And um it it runs like a normal school day.

007So you know we got buses going, we got people to feed, we got all all the things that are are happening on a regular school day are are happening uh the same in summer school. We had 162 students participate in summer school. Uh this year uh we had 16 kids in the summer a program. We had 26 elementary students in the uh summer read program. We had 50 secondary students getting caught up or getting earning extra credits through Edenum or Indiana online academy. And then the the one big thing I wanted to mention here is uh our minds and action students came back from their trip. And I don't know if any of you were following any of they have a a Facebook page. Uh and so it just kind of highlighted all the different

008things. We're not going to go through all of these um experiences, but they had a lot of cool experiences on on their on their trip and through their different breakdown level groups. And so if you ever get time, you know, take a look at at some of the things that that they've done from whitewater rafting to uh running uh side by sides and climbing climbing mountains and all kinds of cool stuff. Uh getting to visit uh caves and so forth. So uh just if you got a second sometime, take a look at that. But that's uh we had 70 kids participate in that. That's a pretty a pretty cool experience. So just kind of wanted to highlight that and recognize uh those individuals that were all involved in summer school. >> We get the opportunity

009to pass on our appreciation for the staffing of the things that travel. Where did the big trip go this year that >> they went out? They went out east and so they they visit uh I don't know where all these places are but uh the Shannondoa National Park, Laorray Ca Caverns, uh Cumberland Falls, Mammoth Cave, Appalachian Trails, Great Smoky National Park were some of the spots. I think there's others, but they went out on their trips. Well, it's I know there's been a lot of people that we didn't have it for a while and I think there's a lot of people that are grateful that it came back. So, it's been some good experiences for those kids. >> Yeah. And Mrs. Moore is a big part of that. Obviously, she has staff that helps her

010with that, but she is a big organizer of that program. So, >> very good. Anything else for that? >> That's all I got. >> All right. Public comment. Agenda items over. All right, we'll move on to agenda items. Um, let me get a motion, a second to approve our regular meeting uh minutes for June 10th. >> We'll second that. >> Motion, second to approve those minutes for June 10th. All in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? All right, passes. um approval of financial reports claims and payroll 23 and 24. >> Go ahead if you got some things you want to add. >> Yeah, I talked with Cheryl Strange this afternoon about these and she said that these are typical for a couple of June payrolls, a little higher maybe because we're paying the spring

011coaches. But otherwise consistent with expectations questions on any claims or anything guys like anything out of the ordinary. uh if I may a couple things on the claims I talked to the other sheriff about u the 35,000 and in and some for the scoreboards she indicated that was the final payment uh for those u of course we did um the June bond payments in June the semianual payments and uh also she indicated that Northfield and Southwood locker project that's in there for 132,000. She felt that was the last total. >> No, that that Sha payment there'll be some additional payments that will be remaining out of that for that. That's not >> So they're not done yet. >> They are. >> Okay. >> They're the punchlet. They're finishing up the punch list stuff and so

012that we've had issues with that before and so they're they're finishing up the punch list stuff but >> I get it done when you do a tour. >> Well, so I was going to talk about that I update a little bit but um yeah, I'll talk about that. >> I may have misunderstood that she understood that the job was done. >> We still have some payments. >> So the last payment will go when you verify it as >> Yeah, we'll probably want to make sure >> there'll probably still be a couple more payments because we've not been paying them until they getting their work done. So, they may still have a couple or at least for some that will be coming to. >> All right, there's no question on that. We'll get a motion second

013to approve second. >> Yeah. Motion and second to approve claims in favor 23 and 24. All in favor say I. >> Any oppos? Passes. Uh financial summary end of June balance. Uh yeah. So these uh from from what I can tell at this point u everything looks to be in line with expectations and balances are good compared to what I saw from last year. So far this year, Chris didn't tell me to say anything different to point anything out. So, >> and is he get is he getting you up to speed pretty quick or >> Oh, yeah. >> It's okay. >> He just didn't throw it off to you and said, "This is it. This is yours." >> He's only been with us for two days. >> Say it pretty quick. >> Fast forward. >>

014There it is. No, if I can speak to to that as well. I mean, everything is where we expected and anticipated to be and you can see that also in the cash flow. Um, and so, um, I just highlight a couple things in in the cash flow. Um, which is might have been my last cash flow, but anyway. Um I the only thing that I updated in the education uh fund was related to we uh we received calculations from the state related to the estimated ADM that we gave them back in March of what we thought we might be at come this fall. And so we gave them an ADM number of 2070. And so based off of the changes in legislation as far as any increases to dollar amounts for specific student types, uh

015that was all uh part of a new what they call worksheet, which is a a calculation model of what we can anticipate those dollars to look like based off that 270 number. And so I have entered that information in there for July through December. And obviously that number can change all dependent on what happens in October of what our actual number is. Uh and then the other thing that I did is I removed that curricular material dollar amount at that we usually got in December. I took that off because that is factored in as part of the APM calculation now. Uh and so that is represented through those July through March or July through December numbers. So >> how are the new projections affected by the changes? >> You mean the ADM projections? Well, >>

016dollar the margins narrow. >> Yeah. >> Yep. >> It's not as much of an increase for one and two, it's a lower ABN that we estimated >> just to be conservative. So hopefully that. Yeah. >> So that's why you would see a kind of if you compare July through December compared to what we had in January through June, you can see it's a a little bit similar. >> You change. >> Yeah. Yeah. But not much of a change in >> I mentioned last time the net growth is smaller than this. sports. >> Yeah. Yeah. And and another part of that that's really hard to determine yet is part of the curriculum material stuff that when they dumped it all into the education fund because that was a that was a a number that we when

017it was a separate fund was always decreasing and then it would have bumps that would add up by the time we got to refresh. uh our technology and then it would go way back down. >> And so >> you're gonna see you're probably Yeah. So you're gonna see you might see some changes with that because of that uh being all factored in now spread out through the 12 months versus how it was. It's on a separate fun. that could have an impact on that growth of that balance. >> Yeah, hopefully they'll look at the fun. >> Hope change. Hopefully, we'll keep our fingers crossed. And then for operations, there's nothing much that has changed that we've not discussed reflected that. So, Travis. >> Okay. Any other questions on financials? If not, we'll move on to

018HR. Under resignations, we have Bailey Trump, the teacher at Metro North Elementary. That was effective in piece of shaft shaw. Shaw, par professional at Southwood Elementary, effective immediately. Brett Evans, teacher at Northwood High School, effective 6:30. And Jessica Floric, par professional at Sharp Creek Elementary, effective immediately. Uh employment, Paty Armwood, pair professional, Southwood Elementary. It looks like that's affected the beginning of the school year. Desire Garrett, par professional, Sharp Creek Elementary, affected the the school year. Dustin Harland, custodian at Southwood High School, effective 77. Aiden Hosler, PE teacher at Southwood High School, effective 811. Joey Olinger, teacher at Whites High School, effective 7:25. Joe Glascock coming back. Sub. >> Yes. >> Northville High School. Uh, that's for next school year. and Carolyn Satderfield. PreK classroom instruction Southwood Elementary School year. Nita Lynette Maler Library H

019Sharp Creek Elementary. Cammy Frank, substitute for all all elementaryaries. And Kimberly Mc Miy a science teacher for Southwood High School effective all those are effective school year. Uh Cassandra Harold transferring from prek teacher to special ed teacher at Metro North effective in the school year. And then we got Southwood fall coaches all effective for this season high sorry and cross country coach Britney Blocker head cheer. Corin Hill, assistant chair. Caitlyn Griven, junior high cheer. Aiden Hustler, assistant football. Jordan Ber, Ted, girls golf. Doug Chennowith, assistant golf. Tom Pinnacle, head volleyball. Karen Tinkle, assistant volleyball. Bailey Wingut, assistant volleyball. Get a motion, a second to approve HR. So move second. Got a motion and second to approve all these HR report. All those in favor say I. I. >> Any opposed? All right. Passes. Move on

020to reports. Uh Matt's not here. He asked to be on. So he didn't forward any more information for that. So >> I don't have any reports. >> Okay. Do you have any reports for superintendent? >> Yes, I do. a few things I'd like to talk about. Uh first off, start with um the wagon uh construction update. So, we'll just kind of start with the the most recent uh drone footage uh from June as far as the progress of the project is concerned. This is [Music] So progress. ress is going well. Um, they've actually started work out of Metro North. If you if you haven't driven by there, maybe take the time to stop by there to see what they're they're working on there as far as the extension of the the gym cafeteria uh space.

021Things are on on uh time and on schedule. So, things are looking good even continues to do a good job. So, we've been happy uh with their efforts. Uh they are planning or I'm having them plan on being here at our next board meeting. And after that board meeting, uh we're going to take a tour and walk around and and look at that project. And I thought that would be a good time that we could check out the the locker room. >> That's up our next board meeting. >> Yep. The 12th. So that that's the day before school starts. And so it's probably the best time to do it. Those things those areas like the locker rooms and stuff will be occupied but if we try to do it later I don't know how clean

022or occupied they will be. So it might be a good time to to do that while we're out there at that time. That's what I was planning on doing. So uh and then just kind of want to mention uh a couple other things. Uh we won't have another board meeting except for that one on the 12th which is right before school starts. So I wanted to mention online registration. I'll be sending out information to parents and staff uh related to uh registration. So our online registration will begin on July 23rd and it will run through July 28th. We will also have an on-site registration held at our elementary buildings uh for one day. Uh and that will be on the final day of online registration. So July 28th uh from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm.

023Uh we'll have people available on site if someone needs some help. Otherwise, uh we'll have people available uh to call at each of the buildings uh between July 23rd and July 28th to hopefully um registration. Our first student day is July 28th. That's not for our students, traditional students, but for whites. So, whites will begin on July 28th. Our first staff day will be August 11th. Uh and then our first student day is August 13th. Any questions about registration? start time like on that 23rd. Is that like 8 o'clock in the morning or just when's that start and when does it end on the 28th? >> Uh I believe it will start probably 12:01 a.m. >> I didn't know. Yeah, it's that day. If somebody asks, >> but we will have people available uh at

0248 a.m. if they need help, if they want to get started that early. So um so yeah >> say that in person it's just on the 28th. >> Yeah there's just one day in person our method of registration I know that's registration as a whole don't think so not heard of any complaints or issues when it comes to that most people know what to do. Uh for newer families, they usually checked in and and worked with the building to get set up, but they still have to go online and register when the time comes. All right. Uh the other topic I want to touch quickly on is related to uh just some updates and new laws. There were 44 new or revised laws related to public education. Uh some of them will have I mean

025they all have some type of impact uh on uh us specifically but a couple that I wanted to address that we'll have to uh come back to because it's related to school policy uh is absences. So, um, the state has identified different categories, new categories of absences, and so those don't align with what we have in our policies. And so we need to bring those up to par because families will also see these new codes of absences when they, you know, get Skyward alerts or they check their students on Skyward. They they might see these different codes and may not know what they mean. So we have to have them defined as well in our policy. And so I know we did the handbook policies back in June, but these laws go in effect July

026one. We got updates on these policies like a week before that. And so we'll need to come back and revisit that. Um when it comes to absences and then the teacher appreciate appreciation grant policy that we have, we used to have to renew that annually. that goes away and that's a policy that we don't need to have how we have it. Uh and I don't know that we have to have a policy at all. They're supposed to give us more guidance when it comes to that. The teacher appreciation grant is going to be completely it's going to be done completely different than what it's been done in the past. We haven't had a lot of guidance on how that looks and how that will operate. But our current method and policy is no more. Uh,

027and so that that's another thing we'll have to either get rid of or leave behind. Those were the only ones that I have noticed at this point that really impact us from a policy standpoint. Uh, we'll have some things that we'll need to do on our end related to all these other policies or revisions related to training requirements, staff training requirements and uh, school accountability. School accountability is coming back. We haven't had it since CO essentially, but they're bringing back the A to F model schools. And so, uh there'll be a lot of information uh that will come with that. Tim may share some things down the road. Uh but we're still learning a lot about what that all entails. So, just want to mention that. And then finally, just kind of want to say

028it's a little different view today for me. Uh, and it's one that I just am very appreciative appreciative of. So, I want to just take this opportunity to thank uh my family, you guys as a school board, uh my former superintendent, Mike and and Sandra, and just the staff, just the MSD staff for all its support and and and me as I step into this new chapter. Uh so my plans going into this year are just to dedicate my first year uh in really deepening relationships and understandings as I take a look at uh what our u strategic plan priorities are and develop goals related to that. We we have goals. uh we've we've met and accomplished a lot of those goals and so kind of what those next steps might be uh as we

029align uh to our mission and vision. Uh just to uh reiterate what those strategic priorities are. Uh one was uh related to student achievement, the other was related to recruitment and retention. uh the third one was fiscal responsibility and the fourth one is related to facilities and technology and just creating safe environments. So, this first semester, I'm going to really focus on a period of learning and listening. Uh, get into the buildings, uh, in a little different role than I than I've previously been in. uh and get into the classrooms, get to the events, um and do some of those things, hear what people are saying, hear what people are interested in, and just kind of like I said, deepen those relationships and understandings of what's happening uh across the district. Um that will lead

030me into the second semester uh maybe leading into the summer or beginning of next year and aligning those uh thoughts and understandings into the priorities that we may want to look at setting uh as our strategic goals. So uh again I'm very excited about this opportunity. Um, I think there will always be room for growth and improvement, but I'm not looking to come in day one and make any drastic or sweeping changes as if things are broken. We do lots of wonderful things here in the district. We have many dedicated educators and staff are committed to creating meaningful learning experiences and minds and action was just, you know, one small snippet of those opportunities and experiences that we're we're providing our students. And like I said, we we can always get better and that's what

031we'll go into it as. Uh, I aim to lead with a simple yet hopefully powerful belief that while we can't always control our circumstances, we can always control our attitude and effort and we can always seek to get better every day. And that's that's the that's the the main focus. If we can get 1% better every day, I consider that a victory, a win for the day. And I will continue the montage that if we dream big and work hard, great things will follow. So the dream big, work hard won't go away with with Mike's departure. So anyway, just wanted to say that a little bit as we head into this and just really looking forward to this opportunity. So thank you. So, we appreciate that and we look forward to seeing what you have

032in store, what you you know, it's takes a lot of studying, looking, talking, and trying to figure out what the next step is. Always get better. Never be satisfied. That's always one of those things. We're always moving forward. We're making making progress. don't want to be stuck in the mud thinking that we're doing just a good job shooting for great. I think over the decades one of the things that's defined the superintendent's position good or bad or whatever has been accessibility. How accessible are they? I think back over the better superintendence from when I was younger through the education process then as a parent as a grandparent accessible because that's the beauty of the size of our school district. >> All right. Do you have anything? Correct. >> We do have some preliminary IRA scores.

033I know that. And AP scores. I'll tell you, they they'll knock you out of the park. Can't talk a lot about it now because they embargoed, but I'm sure Tim will be excited to share that information. >> Sounds good. We look forward to that report. We'll move on to new business. We have one item. We have a recommendation to rejoin the social media action lawsuit which Chris has had up there. I guess you want to >> Yeah, there's not a whole lot to talk. So, I went back and I looked. We we actually approved this back in August of and then I I believe it was February of this year when they started um getting more involved and then they were wanting us to do all of this work and management and we just didn't

034have the staff or personnel to devote that time to. um Josh has talked to them and and they are willing to do that work for us on our behalf and so that shouldn't create any additional um or hopefully much additional work related to things that they're going to need as part of this mitigation. There there were several school districts that are involved across Indiana. It's very similar to what we were just involved in with the with the jewel stuff that this is related to social media and the harmful effects that it has on students. And so, uh, the thought was that if if we're not having to do anything, uh, or spending extra time and and personnel on this that it wouldn't hurt to continue to be a part of it and see if there

035is anything that we get uh from it. At the end, I think the main goal is just to bring attention to some of the harmful effects that social media can have. Any questions or anything about that recommendation? Previously, they wanted us to case study certain students or just develop statistical information they can use. It was more statistical information, not individual student specific um but related to social media use. >> Is there a little bit of irony that sometimes we encourage social media >> in the classroom? >> Oh, we were just talking about the Minds and Action Facebook page. We live stream this through Facebook. >> It's a blessing and a curse that I mean that's unfortunately that's how everything is, >> you know, but it's the the bad guys that kind of take advantage of

036of that at your fingertips. >> Well, I'm not diminishing this is a real issue, >> but at the same time, I'm not too fond of lawyers. So, >> yeah. Any other questions on that? Got a motion to second to approve that. So moved. >> Second. >> We got a motion and second to approve that we rejoin the social media action suit. All those in favor say I. >> Any opposed. All right. Motion passes. Unfinished business. We don't have any any board policy any public comment. >> I have a question. >> Okay. >> What's happening with the road in From Southwood High School? >> Is that the highway or is that >> No, that's us. Um that's a good point. We are um we are widening the drive off of the highway. And so to do

037that, we have to work with the transportation department at the state level. And so Uh, I believe they have to be a part of it, which they're the ones that did all the cones and the paint. >> So, not a turn lane. >> No, it's not a turn lane per se. It's just widening widening that drive to make it a little >> Not adding a separate drive. Just widening the drive. >> And there will be lighting that will will be attached to that as well. make it a little bit easier accessible. >> We we have we had asked for that. We asked for it also at Southwood Elementary because they built a similar one there at the high school, but they wouldn't do it at the elementary. And so we we've done it a couple

038times and they've done their studies or whatever and they just deemed that it wasn't necessary. So >> there's a lot of traffic. >> Yeah. So hopefully the widening of the the drive will I just make it a little safer turning into that. >> Yeah. >> I'm surprised they didn't approve it because you have that incline there as you're going west. >> Do you know how they're are they making the mouth? I know now it's kind of like a 90 >> slightly. I mean they know how they were actually designed it because I >> I can I can look and see. I don't think that it's a straight 90 turn like it is now. >> Was able because you kind of essentially almost had their own term like as a graduate just come in terms especially

039come off one direction but I was curious how they designed >> it. No, our hope was that they would start it this week because I think they put the cones up and stuff. >> They got the cones and they kind of widen the >> our hope was that they were going to get started this week. >> Cones don't mean a whole lot anymore. >> All right. Any items for board members? If not, we are journed.
