let me know give me the thumbs up okay we'll call to order the meeting this is the 30th of september 2021 work session and uh we'll go ahead and start with uh pledge to the flag which is in the left corner there i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay roll call we have all seven members spencer warden eric lisa stephen ryan christina simpson julie fees and on the zoom we've got mary schilling okay we'll uh that we're ready for the approval of the agenda does anyone have a motion we actually do not take action at sessions so there is no no okay so i sent out an email uh for
an agenda and item one was resolution 2021-11 regarding non-discrimination teaching the critical race theory uh the format of the work session we've got that that resolution up on the wall and i'd like to do is for each vet board member will sequentially offer any suggested edits to the resolution you can state them but i i would like uh after you state them you could go off and mark them up and if you have things you wish to add we have uh stickies here you want to add language to that to extension or if you think of stuff as you're sitting there and then we could have uh open discussion um well i think what i'd like to do and we'll see how this works out is get this where everyone's everyone's spoken state their point
and edits we have an open discussion with and that's going to be marked up and stickies on it and sherry's also capturing some notes that she hears and then someone in this case julie would take this offline and based on the inputs go ahead and put together the editing resolution that's a clarifying question from there so once julie does that what's the next step from there are we going to talk about that after our discussion or we can't i guess it depends uh you know it could be that we have it in the form that it's ready you know someone can take it offline and someone can put it in a form and then make those edits and send it out i would say probably tomorrow in the business or for saturday and then we
can review it some of the people can get back by an email saying hey yeah that was good or if this wasn't captured and then have it in a forum such that what's our legal requirement to have that for public it's on the agenda i think we're already putting it on the agenda so i don't think that actual document would be necessary okay yeah there is the topic that's out there the actual documentation doesn't start and then you would ideally get to a final version for the 7th of october's meeting would we be able to um after the edits are done would we be able to um converse over email in that way or is that something actually has to be done in the morning because as far as i understand it i'm pretty sure
that's something that we have to do in a board meeting to continue to say hey i think we need to add this or that didn't capture what i was saying or something like that um because then otherwise it's just done over email that's not really the side of things i just want to make sure we're doing everything right yeah let's let's see where we get to the end of the day and we'll go from there so with that um i would ask that when whoever's going to speak they will remove their masks so the video and sound can follow easier and we can understand more better with that is is there anyone who planned to go each board member go ahead and speak individually does anyone like to go first i i mean i'll go
just because mine's really short okay um i would just take the whole thing away based on the fact that we don't teach it if we wanted to say ban a book that was a textbook for a curriculum and it's a number poster it's a graduate program so if we wanted to find a book or find the book or whatever the textbook is and say we can't use this book that is one thing but there's so much of this that makes it harder for our teachers to teach in any capacity we've heard that a lot from that i and one i mean to replace the resolution 2020-09 that's a non-starter i think at least for me and um if we if we just took it all down and said we are not going to allow we
do not want this book this textbook for this curriculum taught in our schools that we don't do now anyway that's a completely different story i'd be fine with that but um for me i would change all of it so two nothing or the book that we think is the problem because it's not it's not something that we teach in our schools so okay thank you um i'll go ahead and go next we're done here sure um so i have some opening comments and then i also have some uh suggestions on the resolution that we're speaking about right now um so i'm just going to kind of read what i typed up earlier today these are just some of my thoughts on kind of where we're at right now as a school board um and what
i'd like to see um in the future as we work together um so in a time of history we're working together as a school board and navigating ideas and topics which should be focused on what is in the best interests of students and families we are now concerning ourselves with extreme and seemingly politically driven agenda items in my opinion the main focus of any individuals who are elected to serve on a school board should be connecting students and families to their schools and building much needed trust between the two parties there is no room to build trust when the topics being discussed create more divisiveness stemming from ideologies of those who are elected to serve we need to focus on how to bring people together not farther apart we need to focus on safe schools
for our students staff who feel supported by us and the administration team current involvement in the district's connection to partners in our community we also need to focus on coming together as a board to discuss our differences of opinion in a respectful way that highlights each individual's perspective while agreeing to disagree what is the point of addressing topics that we may feel are in the best interests of our students and families if in turn it creates a non-productive environment that inhibits the work our families have entrusted us to do i would like to advise all my fellow school board members to take a step back strive to be open-minded and focus on building ourselves up as a team in order to best serve our students and families how can we expect our students to come
together and accept each other if we who are elected to serve cannot do that amongst ourselves on the topic of critical race theory when forming an opinion about critical race theory it is incredibly important to do research based on non-political sources it's my understanding that this curriculum is not currently being taught in our schools and i am unsure why this has become such a main topic of conversations time instead of focusing our attention on the most pressure pressing issues at hand such as supporting our students mental and emotional well-being and how to support them through this pandemic regardless of anyone's personal viewpoints related to the implementation of critical race theory and the mass community our resolutions do not supersede state mandate or state law our time should be spent on topics that promote true change
and are unfortunately at times ineffective if not backed by the current direction received from the state if no true change is implemented and all we are doing is voting on whether we agree with the current decisions being made at the state level then what is the purpose behind addressing the topic at hand in the first place i am worried the current actions taken by certain school boards will lead to the creation of certain policies that tear apart the hard work our local tribes have dedicated time to such as the implementation of the sb13 curriculum in our schools being a cochlear tribal spouse another to three enroll profile tribal children is important to me that we bring light to certain strategies that affected those who came before us if this resolution passes i am fearful our
connections and partnerships with our local tribes will be negatively impacted and i cannot support that we have tribal children in our schools who deserve to feel supported welcomed and embraced by the established policies that distributed by anybody else so i'll go next um so unfortunately stole a lot of thunder from a lot of us i'm sorry i mean i have talking points i just you know and that was very well spoken i appreciate that um and i i do this resolution to me well with me in some aspects to me it's just was basically it didn't it didn't get in the details that i would like to see more or less um it just spoke about critical race theory which is a broad subject and there's a lot of tenses to it stuff like that
um and to me that that just also kind of lends into us slippery slope i mean we implement something like this it could have a lot of negative effects to staff and students and so forth in this community um it's it's too it's too broad to implement and and to ban um i mean it's not it's not defined let's put it that way it's it's just you know and and like eric said and you know it's we have to have a book or something that's concrete in there that you know to have out there to kind of um you know it's a lot of solidify and have some validity we don't teach it within this the school district um i know we've used it in the past for staff and so forth but it was
a mandate and so that's just what it was and um you know we have a resolution a little bit out there but that's with them on hundreds of thousands of other school districts they're doing the same thing because it's just the nature of things that we're going through these days and so forth and we just you know it's it's not like those those programs are you know basically you know shutting other kids doing other things it's just bringing the lights some things that we have to deal with you know in our society so and and banning crt i think it's just gonna tie our hands and actually go down this this road that we really don't need to and we could lose good teachers really good teachers it's not in a financial aspect but an
intellectual property you know if you go to other school districts that are not in crp so i just to me it's just it just seemed if we were to do something we need to redo this entirely and take out critical race theory and recall something else if there's an issue that we're finding okay thanks steve next we would like to speak i'll go ahead and go um uh so for me i didn't have any prepared remarks like christina she uh that was fantastic um uh i i i agree with everything that's been said so far um i think that if if there is i'd like to actually have a little more discussion dialogue when that comes up um because depending on what the issue actually is i i don't think this potentially if there is
an issue with what the issue is i'd like to understand that a little bit more but but i don't think this would actually address the issue at hand if depending on what that might be um from what i my perspective or my perception might might be what um what i perceive it could be um i don't think this address that i think what this does is it ties our hands in more ways it creates more problems than it does solutions and so i i don't i don't feel like we should pass a resolution of this resolution that at all now it's written was there any suggested edits or not uh no right now just take it off the cable julie or mary uh i can go ahead i've got some um prepared comments i'm um
thank you for all of your comments that have been made so far um one of the things that is near and dear to me is that we must treasure our children um i want to just make sure that there's not a racist ever effort to divide and conquer by race by calling it something else which could be some some of them because we're saying crt is not there but it's called lens of racism fighting uh structural or systemic racism racism and um one of the things that um in the ideology of crt as they're under different names equity and are racist culture responsive etc we do know that within the last year we have had uh training that has made uh some people very uncomfortable um that that's just a fact um furthermore um i
think this whole what do what do you want to call it whether you want to call it crt or not uh it's aimed at stirring up racial hatred resentment division and conflict um from that flows the premise that america who is actually among the least race and racist nation on earth is um and stating that it's systemically racist that that is just wrong so i have um and furthermore uh dividing children by the color of their skin and maybe we we haven't done that so far in the north bend school district but some of the training for um for some people that work in the district actually that has taken place and i have had i've talked to people and they're very uncomfortable about it and they were made to feel horrible so i don't
want to completely get rid of this resolution i'd like to maybe when we're ready to go through some items that people might feel more comfortable about changing but i don't want to discard it all together thank you all right thank you yeah mary pretty much said everything i was gonna say okay good job mary um and i really appreciate you too christina that was really great um that was very well ripped and very well spoken i really really truly appreciate that um i would like to anything that i would like to see would be the terminology taken out that is um divisive or maybe a hot button or something like they could have erased theory terminology but i don't want to remove anything that will leave room for um uh i'm tired guys um kind
of racial type of discrimination um i want to make sure that nobody is discriminated against i don't care what color you are or where you come from i want to make sure that all students and staff are um have no grounds for being the provisiveness at all so i would like to remove the terminology that is divisive and i get it um that was something that was brought forward to me from uh concerned citizens in our district and yeah this is my first rodeo i've never done india's before it was a little aggressive um but i'm not backing down from the idea that i don't want any discrimination towards anybody but also i think that is a person a person's issue and their own being um and i think they have to learn how to
address that in their in their own personal growth and yes we do need to look towards mentors um to get that information to grow we all grow we all fall down we're all you know fall short and and make mistakes and we all say stuff that like wow i know i regret that and i have said things that i've said to others when i was like you know what i want to apologize for that that's not who i want to be um so there has to be room for forgiveness there has to be room for grace um and mistakes and we grow we take the manure of life and turn it into fertilizer and grow so anyway i edit yes but taking that off the table completely no um finding some different terminology but absolutely
no discrimination on any means anywhere but also i don't want to allow room for elevation of one over another so um that has to be addressed as well okay thank you great comments from warren thank you for uh open and transparent uh feedback i guess uh it's been said that it's not in it's not in the curriculum and that's true it does not appear in the work then um i guess i do have a concern based on training that was delivered to the classified personnel back in november of 2020 where those seven items that are in there were were violated so i do do have some passion around that and that we want to remove the critical race theory part that is divisive you know i'm okay on that but the training that was delivered
uh did make people i would say to say it was uncomfortable for those people so yeah i would recommend making some edits to that okay that's that's all i have and i was speaking as a as a boardroom of course okay so now the the open discussion part so i essentially i hear a problem with four four that are saying four board members understand don't want it at all and i've heard three that would like to make some some edits to this yes listening to everybody and i think everybody had awesome things to find out julia i think you're absolutely on the right track there's not one person in this room that thinks that racism is a terrible thing this just doesn't address racism and as a whole this is this is right i think
i think i think that most of this when we start taking out like the critical race you break down a ton of this just gets kind of taken out we break down and we make a resolution that says we will not we are not going to allow racism of anything for any person of any color of any sex of any sexual orientation or religion this is this is not what we do in this in the north school district i think we're all going to jump in absolutely and i think that it could be it could be about three three paragraphs out of everything that's in there but i think that we understand we all agree that this is not something we want to see in our school district in any way in anything and we
tried to say that in one way back in 2020 in october when we passed 2020-09 equity in inclusion and equality are not gracious principles they're they they're applied for healthcare they're applied for school they're applied for law enforcement applied for a bunch if we can break this down to the basic tenets that we all agree with the racism sucks and we won't have anything to do with it this is a this is this goes through in a second the crt aspect of it makes it to the point where it's like this is fight over something we both technically kind of agree on we just don't agree with how it's being said and i think we can get there i think listening to what everybody had to say we can get there thank you i agree
um so i'm actually better at open discussion so i appreciate that thank you um i did look up the oregon department of education student every student belongs resolution template where it has certain aspects that were interesting to me um and it so this is open discussion and i pulled this off of the oregon school board or oregon department of education and i printed it off so for open discussion because i don't completely totally understand it um i'll just skip down to where it says whereas members of the district place whatever school board recognizes that race has long been a determining factor in how children experience school whether they have what they need to reach their full potential and whereas healing must begin with acknowledging passing current harms including describe locate state parks whatever um to
address critical inadequacies sorry i can't say that that exists across the u.s that schools will continue to perpetrate without proactive implementation of anti-racist policy and practice name any known issue locally or once you'd like to know in oregon and whereas you must proactively prevent these farms with strong mentors that ensure equality such as analyzing and adjusting um our current system policies plus and it just goes on so what does that mean i think it could mean a number of things and for a number of people depending on the population that you apply it to right so why does it say i mean specifically why does it say we have to recognize that race has been a determining factor on how it just seems like it's putting a focus on any individual particularly of race and
it doesn't even matter what race and zeroing in on that it seems like to me and my misunderstanding i i think what i think what i don't think you're misunderstanding or i think it's big enough in there that it makes a confusion but depending on the area in which you live right so say you live in a more urban area but this is north banks this is north america this is this is north bend so we don't necessarily have a large pocket we're a fairly homogeneous population i have a lot of white foods um but does that make us racist no not inherently no any no i didn't think it did it doesn't no it doesn't inherently make us racist there are pockets of population bases and it doesn't necessarily matter in this case but
say use the native american population right there approach or or how they might see the school system from their perspective it might look like we don't care to uh give uh appropriate time to the strife and the oppression that they had to feel in their own area this is their spot right this is their home not ours back then and that's how they feel and they should have every right to feel that way we should be culturally competent enough to say we understand is really what i what how i feel that is what they're trying to say is a cultural competency of understanding that this place wasn't inhabited by white folks initially they believed that this is still their area which we should understand and we give them grace to understand that we we know
that that's the case there's places i've been in conferences where there is a blessing from someone from the tribe because the land is initially native american land that's some cultural competency right then that's not saying we're racist we're saying we understand that there's a history here and we don't we're not living in an urban area but in urban areas you have pockets of the population that are primarily black that struggle both so socioeconomically educationally and a number of things that provide barriers to how they learn and that's that's where these templates are built such a vague manner you can use them to apply it in anyone there north vancouver mostly white fairly homogenous area doesn't mean that we're racist no but we should be culturally confident enough to understand what came with us a little
farther it says we affirm our equity policy are working to write an equity policy um and renew it commitment renew its commitment to anti-racism equity and access in education as a core value i was i'm trying to look up this is this is exhausting looking up the definitions of all these words and i found all of this information following the labyrinth of links to the oregon school board association and so i looked up equality in the equality literacy institute the 10 commitments for equity literate educators um says i will um understand the socio-political context of schooling i must be willing to see and understand the bigger this is so much information um i will not confuse equity with universal validation i will resist simple solution to complex problems i will work with and in service
to marginalized communities i will reject deficit ideology i will prioritize equity over peace um so what do you want about looking at this what is your own personal definition of equity i didn't know i've never heard the term equity will be like i'm okay not gonna lie my personal view of equity is all men are created equal and when i say the word men or man i mean the human population are all completely equal there's nobody above or beyond above or below anybody else um i don't care if you're the president you're still a freaking human being i don't care if you're the king of whatever country you're still a freaking human being y'all are we all equal okay we all never none of us make it out of life okay we all have bodies
we all live and breathe and we all die um well equal that's it that's my definition of equality so that doesn't line up to what i was reading here so that's why i had to look i'm like i don't know this definition that's a perfect definition of equality equity is different than quality and that's the thing that does get you know i don't think it's interesting equality is absolutely right everybody starts here right everybody's on this line equity adjusts for the people that are on either side like equality is the only adjustments there's no adjustments there's no equality no but they're different so we all have the same you can say we all have the same opportunities right but there are certain poor pockets of the population doesn't matter what color you are there are
certain pockets of the population that can't get to the same level as everybody else because there is an inequity in whatever part of their life they have finding that inequity and equaling it out brings them up to where everybody else is it does it depends on what it is it means and then fix it i mean give me an example well there's there's a very there's a famous picture and i and i don't have a dry erase board but there's i guess can i use something i use some paper okay so there's this there's this picture and christina i'm sorry you're for free yeah everybody's boxed that's what you can see over the fence everybody's boxes everybody got a box that doesn't mean you can see all the stuff that's gonna be able to fit
underneath the branch better than you like that's is that just because you have a box doesn't mean you still can see over the fence so there's a difference between a quality under the fence and you can't not if it's a not if it's a solid fence with with tight slats and it's all the way to the ground you can't see on the planet there's just no way around it the premise is that just because you have everything equal doesn't mean that it's actually helping anybody out so that's the difference in theory between equality and equity i get that part honestly that has never been an issue in my entire life until i became a school board member never heard of it never even had a problem with it if there's people in it if there's
people that are having struggles personal struggles or whatever struggles because of where they are what is it is it where they live is it who their family is is it the town how much food they have i mean i mean in this community we have a lot of systemic power and it's not necessarily racial it's social economics and we've got generations we've got a lot of kids are couch surfing between cars there's a lot of kids and i talked to someone about haste score and stuff like that which is kind of like you've got all these disparities against you as a child growing up you got you know parents footballs and views all the stuff and that kind of basically and not just individuals you're talking about a macro aspect living in this there's it's
statistical it's all exactly the same there's a chance that person is going to come out being just like this social economic group which is very unfortunate and we see that not just in you know white or black or asian or anything like that it's you're seeing in all different races in different parts of the world with different aspects and i think what it is is that you want to try to take those individuals you know how things go back and this kind of leds into the mask so getting the kids back to school to save some information it's it's a it's a great place for them to be rather than home when they have an abusive parent or this and that we've got to look out for the kids and this is and this is
where that equity comes in get kids you know and i know some kids said their home lives their a score was really bad but it turned out really well that's just one kid out of thousands and thousands of kids that had the same situation that didn't come out of disparity and that's where kind of this whole equality and equity comes into play with equity we're trying to raise these kids to give them that chance get them out of that thing and take that statistical aspect of it saying you're you're going to have now a broader spectrum of kids that are going to be more successful and build that up and that's what most of the stuff these programs that we're doing is helping those kids in disparate including problems you know like i said you've
got a lot of kids in this community they're just not doing well and they need the help they need someone to you know get them there and rather have kids in school and listen that doesn't matter so if i can say julia i'm with you i used to run a non-profit very sport with disabilities and and this whole you know equity quality inclusion and all these different things was you know it's tough to kind of try and understand where these different lines are and how do you make sure that you're giving everybody a fair chance but at the same time like you're saying not giving you know an unfair advantage you know um and then and then in the meantime while you're trying to be inclusive for one population you're throwing another population aside no
matter no matter what it is and so um the other side of that baseball picture is is the inclusion part so you have the you know the equality which is everybody gets the same size box right to stand on but you've got the shorter person you know the media person the tall person then you got you've got um i'm cheating here by looking at it you've got equity see i've got to even remind myself sometimes but then you got equity which is where you you change the size of the box so that way then everyone's the same height i i totally get that why why does it seem to focus on well hold on i want to get to the last time so so that no you're fine and then and then the the furthest
point that is ideal to get to is inclusion which is where you take the stinking fence down and then you have everybody who can stand at whatever level they happen to already be at whatever you know that that is that that you know everyone's creatively and that's inclusion where we say why do we even have a fence here get rid of the fence and and then everybody can be at that height that they are at and but then that way there's no barriers for them and so so that's the ultimate goal from my perspective um is is inclusion so we're including everybody and we're not having having barriers to it so can i give an example on something yeah so so one of the one of the examples is that we had one time was
um we were trying to do this meeting uh and and this was this was two years ago i think if i remember it was a previous board and and we're trying to have this meeting that's what we're trying to do to get everybody together and stuff and so one of the thoughts was okay well let's have a meeting at you know at this time of day uh you know at the middle school or something and so the question came up to make sure that we're inclusive to all populations is well what about those individuals who you know are single moms with you know three kids and they might want to attend that meeting but they can't because they don't have a babysitter or something like that how are we going to make sure that they
have the opportunity to still have their voices heard as opposed to only having their people's voices heard that are you know two parents you know that kind of thing so how do we make sure that we're being inclusive to everybody you know and making sure you get everybody at the table that needs to be at the table without giving somebody an unfair advantage so to me that was a good example of that so most of my concern comes from the fact that i have people from the community and people who have been through this training i'm just worried that um it's gonna transfer into the schools because they felt so belittled and and it was just so horrific for them that they went through that training so awful that they were like this is terrible
um and so following their language in the labyrinth even from the oregon school board association emails following those term words this is the stuff that comes up so i want to make sure that we protect our staff and our kids from any of this especially any um training because i haven't heard it was awful um and i feel bad for them so i don't know would it make sense and i'm just spitballing jimmy you can you can throw something um you're ready does it make sense because like you said you want to make sure that staff is represented in whatever it is that we want to make sure that these representatives do we say this isn't going to be ready october 7th and we put together a work group with representatives from staff current representative
some way to say we want to come up with an inclusive anti-racism approach but we want to do it together it means that we understand media i don't know if that's something we can do kevin but if if we have representation and we say this is the overall tenant this is what we want to say we don't want anybody to feel like they have been marginalized or that they've been the subject of any kind of racism how do we put this together so it makes sense for everyone and we do it in a meaningful way where we have the voices of the people we really want to protect absolutely you know i mean i don't know if that's something that we i know that we wanted to try to have something for october 7th but
this isn't something that we can just push down the road i mean we need to make sure that we're doing it right i don't know if that's something that we didn't consider as a board but i know we're not making decisions at this point like taking action actually i would feel more comfortable if we had more current voices at the table like i know we've gotten a lot of emails and whatnot but i would feel more comfortable having a committee form primarily of our parents of current students that we have in our school districts because i think that they need to be at the table when we're passing something that's this important that's this controversial um so that would be my primary focus was to have parent volunteers who can serve on that kind of
committee and vocalize their opinion on some of those things they've got great people that come in and do these kind of groups where they're like all right i'll give you some help the topics and they've gotten crap all over the room and all their stuff they do a great wonderful job and and and with that too i mean to the point of the training and everything else we can make sure that you know in in the writing or how we work things you know it's not not taught you know any anything you know that's marginalizing anything not taught in the school systems you know as trainings as you know whatever i mean in any shape or form within the district there is some interesting things in the english class i will admit there were like
eyebrow reasons in my opinion when i read them um i don't i can't recall specifically maybe i should have printed it out turning in but i have read a few of my son's english assignments and i was like what well maybe once once we and once we have this once we talk about it then then we can also have tiffany then you know work as a curriculum uh what's your title curriculum directory thank you um uh and and we can then kind of put this focus on it okay i mean i don't know what kind of checklist she has i mean she has to go through does this meet this criteria check does this meet this criteria check it doesn't mean i think as a school board we have the ability to take what she's
needing to implement and to review that and look it over and make sure that we agree on that before it's just you know well and have her just present on because right because we obviously we obviously all of us don't know right what what what checklist like you're saying she goes through to do that and so i mean you know i think that before we take that's the other thing too that we need to be careful when we we pay district members to do all that stuff and to be honest with you i'm pretty sure all of us in here have a full-time job and so you know maybe not jim um but um you know we need to you know we create those those policies and then we just say okay here's the policy
we need them and that's what the student stands for is to make sure that okay this is these are the rules of the road let's let's do it right to your point julian you talk about the english book that you may have been hiring at that point we need a representation from those teachers we heard explicitly from teachers because there's a ton of things just based on some of the language we're never going to be able to talk about and we need to make sure that we that we're listening to what our teachers have to say as well that's why this joint approach to this should hopefully iron this out smooth it out so that it is the best and most well-rounded thing that we put together to protect our families our kids and our
staff and then we go forward feeling good about what we've got out there hopefully trying to bring people together right instead of channeling right i feel like we're all agreeing on the foundational issues here like i feel like we're all agreeing absolutely i think that our perception and our lens that we're using is different but that's okay because we can still come together and talk about it and have a conversation about it and that's what we should be doing as a word is somehow trying to meet in the middle and figure out how to work out some of these things while having open conversations about it because i think we're all really agreeing i just i agree with everything you just said you know it's not like we're on opposite ends is that we need
to come together and try to give each other the benefit of the doubt and have the right mindset and write intentions behind what we're doing um and then doing it in a positive constructive way when you develop it right that's it yeah so like i said this is my first radio i have no idea what i'm doing but here i am here i am i i have been so impressed by your ability to do your homework and your ability to do your research like how well thought out you are and well versed like you want to educate yourself on what we're talking about the issues at hand and sometimes it might be a little but you're passionate and that's what matters like i do feel like you care about our students and care about the
families in our district and you are voted in you know and i think that you bring a lot to the table is just having an open conversation with it as a team because we're a team right we're supposed to be working together in that and then you have to say you're not the only one i spent weeks trying to get my brain wrapped around right i mean i swear to god i was listening to podcasts and watching youtube videos and reading this on the fly and doing everything because it's like it's it's deep it's it's a very very good i mean i swear not i should just take what i've learned and you know apply it to getting my master's degree that i feel like i was writing a thesis but that's the reason why
i feel like it's important to address as a school board for our to our parents that are concerned that have come to me absolutely okay we got you elected we have these concerns um so here i am um i was sorry i was going to see if mary had anything but do you have anything over here i definitely do and i'm in agreement with almost everything that everyone has said and i do want to work together as a team i just um want to reiterate that i don't want any group uh lifted up i mean when that happens i mean i do believe in a quality because then they're going to be other groups that feel like they're left out so however we want to get together and do this i don't know if you
want if you guys want to go ahead and go through this resolution and take out the parts that um were all in agreement can be removed tonight and then have something a little bit cleaner for um maybe the group that that we all want to get together and and talk this over with that's that sounds good i kind of cheer every now and then the chair's going to speak but i'm speaking as a warrant member um i i'm very much about quality opportunity in north bend school district we offer equal opportunity in education um when it gets into equity equity is around outcomes a lot you know i guess around it who makes that determination who makes that judgment who should get what for something special so where i'm at is in the north bay
school district i view our role as we have to have all students should reach their maximum attention that is that's one of our goals so i see that it is when students come in they have their individually assessed for where they're at and learning levels and based on that individual assessment that's done by the north bend school district they are placed in appropriate classes to get them to reach their maximum potential what i don't want to see is decisions made prejudging people based on race and ethnicity and equipment class or you're given whatever equity that items yeah absolutely yeah so i guess some of that you can work for a non-profit and some of that you know what's the role of the public school people is it a quality of opportunity educational opportunity and then
using these individual assessments i look at equity as trying to control outcomes perhaps somebody gets something more somebody gets something less that might be the role of a nonprofit that might be role charitable organizations i'm just throwing that out trying to contribute one thing i forgot to say at the beginning is i want to thank several award winners who said that controversial topics like this are best worked in work sessions where we can do that so that was a very good suggestion like that's a great way for us to know so um go ahead sorry thank you i would love to have the education maybe a presentation you know at a board meeting at some point to figure out because i don't know uh to what you're talking about jim um i i don't know
necessarily that process um you know of how we figure out that how the district figures out the inclusion side of things you know what i mean uh obviously we don't want to predetermine people just simply because of their race or because of you know gender or whatever it might be those those determinations should be made you know in an ethical way and everything else but but i don't know how that's necessarily made you know right now how it's already done i think i think what would be good is for us to first seek first understand you know before we before we make any conclusions on what needs to happen or doesn't need to happen because it might be done in a great way right now and it might be mandated by the state the way
it's supposed to be done or and we might need to revamp it and we might need to say you know i you know based on our conversation here that that doesn't really fit those definitions that we're all agreeing to and so i think maybe having a presentation on that so we can understand more of how this is happening as opposed to just kind of saying you know this is what we want to see because it might already be happening you know what i mean and there might be just a couple things that need to be tweaked or you know i i don't know so um that would be my suggestion and then and the other thing too i actually i've been a part of a lot of groups what eric was kind of talking about
where you have a professional come in that kind of does the idea boards and stuff and helps us to put all of our thoughts in a in a cohesive manner and and it might be a good idea a worthwhile idea for us to have essentially you know a meeting similar to this where we have somebody a facilitator here with with a few members of the staff and everything else to talk about this and to be able to help us articulate that you know and and put it up on a board so then you know let them do some of the initial they work and then we come back and we look at it and we say yeah that's what we're trying to say or no that's not what you know what we said and to
i mean let them put it together i mean they're the they're the professionals who've done that time and time and i agree with that and the thing is you know i've like said i've done my research and studying and i've even seen some people that have studied this doctors and very very serious they've had their you know doubts about it the k through 12 12 realms and that but then there's more there's more in-depth aspects to this and having someone that understands it fully would be beneficial for us to understand it if we're getting away from that if we're if we're walking away from crt we're saying we want to put just a a resolution around how we feel about racism in our school district crts we're just forgetting about it yeah and we say
with a strategic plan or somebody that facilitates those things this is the overall premise like and distinguish that first that first paragraph the district prepares discrimination or asked on the basic session certain parts of that say now expand on let's let's work on that as step from a staff perspective a parent perspective a student perspective um i don't even know that we're necessarily involved with it at that point like spencer said we come back and see what they came up with but we let them come up with what they think it means for them as the people that live and live and work in the community i think that's a great perspective i'm not discounting it however we all were elected as the school board and that seems outsourcing our um duties i don't think
that's proper i think things like this need to be on us um because it's our district and i don't want to outsource it i was just sorry just to clarify what i was saying somebody not to not to do it for us but to basically be without i think we can do it without i think we're capable that we can do it ourselves i don't think we need to bring anything because that seems like money to me like we have to pay somebody to do that am i wrong so spencer's presentation you're you're specifically requested is that from the curriculum director just go back to the presentation um to be honest with you i'm not sure who that would be um i i don't know who necessarily is the person of her who determine it
might be the curriculum director but i think i kind of talked about two different presentations there one was the curriculum thing to do with the english and she's talking about how the checklist that she mentioned you know how do we determine what curriculum to do and not to do and the other presentation we're talking about is how do we determine you know what what classes kids are in or are not in what special assistants they have or don't have uh those types of things and that might be more like the special ed director i would imagine would probably be part of that discussion um and maybe like the principles and things like that that would be my guess but yeah i think tiffany would be able to tell us what assessments are made from students
during the term then that's done teachers standardized testing that type of thing also another thing somebody uh mentioned essentially a curriculum committee that's a yeah idea i think that's worth a deep dive on being what's taught and worked in yeah school district it was a one of the public comments the last school board meeting was around that and having parents involved i think that's a great idea yeah there's some parents out there that want to think there's one that stepped forward and said hey is there a committee i want to be part of it if not let's get one started so she will definitely there's probably parents out there they would really appreciate that opportunity so back to mary's suggestion are we okay to go make some edits on this and remove the crt comments
i i would have no problem ending it but i don't think it's gonna be anywhere ready for this episode i mean i i okay are we editing it to then say that we want that like that group to go through it say what makes sense what they think should be added i think it would be editing it to what we in this in this room can agree on that that should be removed so and then from what i've i've heard if i'm wrong that's going to be probably everything starts everything that has crt well that would be starting with the title yeah so my next question is is this an amendment to the 2029 i'm almost thinking essentially this would this sentence this would be taken out it talks about critical races this sentence would
be revised to something the effect that uh district teacher administrator or other employees in the district shall require and make part of the course the following concepts in these seven months i know that there were some teachers that had some serious concerns about that method and i'll limit a lot of the things some of the one of the history teachers i know that there was an english teacher i don't necessarily think that but spoken at some point saying that that was commitments that's where i think that having at least some staff go this is where and give us some feedback as to why they think that they might limit what it is they're currently teaching based on history and english because there have been some terrible things that have happened in this church there is
and these seven i mean these seven things are essentially talk about discrimination and i don't think i don't remember which one it was that he was talking about yeah i don't uh so i don't think these seven things have a place in instruction in our classrooms or any trainings that we deliver to our staff i agree with that this is nothing that would go away yeah things are red any comments so the number two has credibility over there do we have a copy of the resolution 20209 we do let me give it to you oh thank you i got it okay thank you though who does not anybody know what happened so were there any comments on 20 2009 i just have comments on the resolution or working on it because i can't see the
board but i'm assuming you you have taken you've corrected the the title yeah and then it's oh and then we're saying it's so far it's okay until whereas critical race theory and we're taking out those whereases that refer to critical race theory yeah correct mary yes and then the therefore be it resolved um how has that one changed so far it hasn't been changed it's just been crossed off the therefore be it further be it resolved particularly theory is rejected and that part is crossed off and critical race theory is pressed off so that one mary could be this this sentence could be replaced therefore be resolved no more than school district teacher administrator or other employee of the school district shall require or make part of the course the following consonants and list those
okay so my question is on this so i mean there's some some general things we've crossed out here um you know i think um are we going to have a work group come together and talk about things because obviously this is just a starting point this isn't and we need to we do have to meet together you know like session to be able to i mean like we're doing here to continue to work through it we can't do that over email or anything like that um and so that night group will need to meet together at some point and then come together you know maybe we do at the next um work session you know or something like that to be able to discuss it again and because unfortunately we have to we we have
to do it in public session and they're going to continue to hammer this thing yeah that's underscore so um you know it would be nice to just be able to hammer things out and get it all done real quick but we definitely need to do that this is up forward so versus replace the resolution there was a reason why we had this it's not necessarily perfect and i understand that based on where we're at but the complete replacement of 2020 i think is i don't necessarily know if it's warranted you said there's a reason why you have that can can you tell me what that reason is we're being sued pretty significant lawsuit there was a couple it was multiple ones that is i think still can come back and bite us in the rear
at this point i don't think we're outside of it yet so yeah i could see a supplement to this being something that kind of clarifies some things but i don't know that we can just yard it out of people by the roots over the side i would agree with that how many of the board members were in that issue what do you mean this dude this voting on 2020-09 yeah four of us passed unanimously so i guess you know i look at 20 2009 and when i read it it's it's pretty strident and it reads to me like an activist document and i guess when you go down to one two three four five six seven eight eight whereas and i read uh the north bend school district is working to be a leader on
educational equity including critically analyzing our current system policies practices but we also recognize that the district has not had enough to combat racism or proactively teach anti-racism and then the next one below that i see where we're saying now therefore being resolved uh i guess the part of the sentence above them whereas estimate your combat races those are very that's a very striking statement right there and when i read down in the therefore below it says now therefore be resolved on this first day of october 2020 by the board of northern schools district condemns races and racial violence rights tennessee takes huge bigotry off horns inside outside of schools and community and stands steadfast in their commitment to foster an inclusive educational environment where every student staff member parent and community member is treated with
dignity and respect as well as our commitment to continue fighting for racial justice and civil rights for all i guess that last part finding the racial justice in human and civil rights call what does that mean for the school district to me it means that we're making sure that there's equality for all no matter the race matter no matter you know what it is it's just like making sure that it's equality after all we're in violent agreements so because i i'm totally supportive yeah and and and that's the way that i read it is is is in that way and then to combat racism you know is essentially to you know to make sure that racism is not something that is uh practiced or seen within our district as well so so that's that's good
the proposed resolution up there with respect to racism has there are several statements whereas racism has no place in american society especially not in the northern school district whereas we want that school district condemns racism and will not tolerate racism yeah those those two statements to me are are synonymous they're yeah they're very similar yeah so the part of what was put in there was to replace the proposed replacing that were those those comments right there those statements to me and it's just me the the comments you read on this one and the comments they're right there to me those are synonymous with each other and maybe it's maybe i'm misunderstanding something to me they're they're they're saying the same thing any other comments and i i have to you know agree with that i
mean it's very similar yeah there's certain words in there that you know seem you know stands out but nonetheless it's just a word changing something else synonymous then um would there be a problem eliminating or replacing resolution 09 uh yes because there again because of the lawsuit because this is something that we determined we needed to pass i don't think it needs to be in there because this is the direction that we're going this is the newest resolution towards our anti-racist aspect we've covered our basis with the thing we need to do leave it alone and move on with the thing that to eliminate um you know racist racism in our society that's a good point i was wondering what um what was the issue that this needed to be created and um has that
been addressed and is this contradicting at all uh like it seems like it was an issue of racism um and with i mean i've seen people of color and black listed in here specifically so um we could move past that and just put in no discrimination for anyone of any color am i wrong i mean am i misunderstanding and i would i would just say you know not um not moving past that um right okay but but um i i get what you're saying yeah we're obviously not moving past it but we're fine-tuning to make sure that you know this is not a misunderstood that we want we on you know racism at all levels right no matter what uh eliminating finish my thoughts um i would like to to just keep that on the
table keep number four on the table for now and then as we're hashing both of these out uh figure out at that time whether we need to keep that or incorporate part of that language into this new resolution 11. like i said earlier i just wanted to just do like an amendment just take this legacy one rewrite it new 2021-11 but just modify some of the verbage in here to reflect a broad respective muslim sort if it falls within the legal to be honest from my perspective i i think i think having a you know an anti-racist um you know document every year from a district heading is fantastic we continue to build on it continue to make sure that you know we stay safe we fine-tune it every year and so by keeping by
keeping this one and then adding you know having another one that says you know look we are we're we're making sure that we're we're on top of this this is something that is a board we want to stay on top of no matter what so i um i i hear you marion and um but to me i do think we need to just remove number four that's that's my perspective does that mean that we get to edit oh nine no uh uh we will know we wouldn't edit oh nine we would create a new we would create a new one yeah in addition to the amendment you wanted to amend this and just make it longer no i don't want to amend this this would stay where it is we keep 2020-09 and then we
would create a you know 2021 cash whatever we're on that's interesting um i need to think about that i don't want to scratch off replaces it yet i need to think about that okay i guess one thing on 2209 if you read the last uh number four from 2209 the district commits to dedicating time in school professional development culturally responsive training book studies for celebrations diversity on behalf of people of color critical conversations among staff and the students and establishing community partnerships for this work i guess what i want to be clear on is that the training that was delivered november 2020 is not delivered that so to me this i don't know if this enabled that training or set the stage for it but i don't want that to happen i agree and and
i think by with a new document we can make a statement of some something like that that says you know what your trainings are not and it's it it's it's it's in that one right if we don't replace this then how does this supersede this then if we take and remove the we don't want this type of training for any staff or even students at all period how does that supersede this if we don't get rid of this or at least edit or modify this in some type and that's a good question i don't know i um i don't know when it comes to the resolutions and updating resolution or something like that if we have to update it or if we have to um replace or if we have to you know what i
mean i i don't know the answer to your questions so hey we've been at it an hour and 15 do we want to go to a five-minute break to stretch our legs and sure we okay with doing that are we able to do that yeah cool i like recesses yes okay let's take uh 10 minutes come back at 7 25. terms um is it staring at you because it's staring at me and i don't like it yeah it's got two sides it really is i think it's the bulb on the top i know but it has some eyeballs right here we're back okay we're back we're back yes we are we saw barry she just left but so i'm sure she'll be back so i guess on the way forward for this from here i
heard two different approaches i heard something the board can do here or not right now the board can do and i heard a committee suggestion so what was here going in my my thoughts on it and i understand what julie is saying but i think we're we're would be remiss if we didn't have the input from our teachers at the very least based on some of their thoughts with working with the kids and i mean if we can get some parental involvement even if it's just a two of them just to say you know we want to work together with everybody how it affects the school district is on every level so if we had the input from them then we would have the most well-rounded approach that we could possibly have and we would
say that we took the time to get that input from those people like i didn't disagree with that i was disagreeing with outsourcing it for somebody for like the people that came to me i was like get your here and let's talk about it especially the teachers because they're the ones that teach you understand the students that you understand what's going on they're in the trenches you know so i i'm hearing a consensus then on on a committee and now in terms of the board representation representation on maybe i'm thinking but we can't have more than three so you have two options so you can do a board committee you can have as many as you want those are those will be those will be open to the public they will be publicly posted you
will have your committee members but anyone in the community can come and watch right so it's a very public process and we post it so you could have as many board members as you want in that process so a lot of districts do uh like they kind of outsource it they did not do the public comment public everything public it is a district's superintendent-led you know kind of like committee with board representation that you can't have more than your three like you can't have quorums you have up to three people um participate in that in uh you have up to three people two three four like all three board members to participate in that that kind of active process as a committee and it's more of a district committee not a board committee so those
are kind of two separate the board committee has to be you know it's like you have if you want to have another board and you can have as many again you can only have a three there and if you doubled a born committee you have to do kind of some allergies it has to be there has to be minutes taken there has to be it has to be open to the public we have to post to those benefits i think you get more meaningful input if it's not if it's one of the smaller closed ones with with three of us and some staff we have staff and some parents then you can have a dialogue conversation not feeling like someone might be able to hound me about decisions you know again you guys can choose
who you want um i've certainly gotten yeah i can have minimal impact on this it's like just kind of again being part of that process i like the idea of doing an application process put your name in and then we could decide as a board concerns is that how that works or like you can you could do that or you can again kind of assign a team like again that as long as there's no more than three of you kind of get together review that select your people you know select the people kind of in cooperation with the district and we kind of pull together um a comprehensive whatever that group you want so if you want to identify here kind of the positional people to parents to this whatever however you want to describe
that then we can work as a smaller team to develop that or you can do it again as a word in the word process the board committee you would probably need to put it as an agenda item and have this open session make your decision of who's going to be on it and again then sherry and i would help again kind of do some of the same things get you applicants get that you would do that all in a public session i personally would like the full board again i i i disagree with that i think i mean it should be a smaller committee to at least start to talk about these things and get it get hashed out and then it comes back to the word after that and then we we see what
everybody brought together you know is that smaller committee and then we talk about it as a word in a setting just like this so that means that a committee doesn't necessarily mean they bring some they bring something forward doesn't necessarily mean that that's going to be the resolution exactly yeah yeah yeah it's just and we'd be able to we'd be able to iron it out and get all their edges off and it's getting the input from those community members and staff members so so let's let's just talk about some numbers so i understand so how many how many parents i always got a number i i i think having probably two parents maybe two teachers and um my thoughts you know two parents through teachers and and maybe um uh i think to teachers but
then having like a like a you know principal or something like that you want to go to school yeah to administrative steps and also we need to include some of the people who have gone through the training we can't leave them out through the throw through the train that happened yeah okay we need to include so maybe we have maybe we have two classified staff to um to to uh teachers uh you know i mean i i think for some reason i feel like the classified in the certified like but i mean i've just opened the schedule well that's kind of part of the point isn't it right better okay i'm winning but because the teachers as i understand it the teachers have not gone through this only um admin and classified have gone through
this training well but are we are we are we talking about the trainer are we talking about trying to come up with it because they are um they have personal experience with it already is why i want to make sure that they're represented um because they've been there and they have that training so they have a they have a voice they they can be heard um so that they're acknowledged on that as far as that goes so i think a smaller group is better quite just for the dynamics of people talking like this here we've got a group uh nine yes but if you get much bigger than 10 it takes on a different there's a different dynamic yeah you may not get everyone's feet so yeah so is there two board members that want
to be on this all right yeah you said up to three correct julie mary okay is it um because i really like what christina had to say that i'd take some of her notes including a fourth person and a board member that's not necessarily including a fourth person it's not actually bringing notes yeah so i didn't hear who the third member was sorry steve ryan julie thieves and you mary okay and then we'll figure out how many um parents teachers and admin and such we want to add it correct i think we have to figure that out here in this meeting yeah i think we i think if you guys are okay i think the numbers of two two teachers two admin two parents is pretty i mean to keep the dynamic yeah because making
a schedule for everybody more than over two people is almost ridiculous to make schedules match i mean it's ridiculous so now because we talk about classified staff though so are you saying one because we you had two teachers two parents and and two administrators and two classes yeah and and two possible yeah so yeah that does make a very large so that's that's the that's the length that's yeah and we're pretty much more than enough so so now um yeah yeah we're doing that process so so the other yeah so the application process that we're going to do is just see who wants to who wants to participate in this and they just kind of thought is that something that comes from you if someone wants to write something of what you want what you
want to put out there to sort of send out to the community we'll help get it out or not if you want someone wants to create it you know you can create something i mean i would be pretty minimalistic co-chair do you want to do that you just want to put on an application could i send that via email do i just drop something and then send it we could formalize it make it look a little bit more legit and then get it out yeah okay just an application yeah yeah hopefully we'll get people to apply because i'd like am i able to send it so sorry it kind of confuses some of the different am i able to send it out to all the board members and they can all approve it before we
send it out to everybody else because i'd like input okay i don't i don't think so okay so what are some of the things that we need on applications when we have a draft of this we can send it out because there needs to be a little bit of like a disclaimer statement that what are you looking for what do you want people to do you're gonna need to hear a little bit i don't think you want to spend time necessarily today so someone can grab that we'll kind of write something up and then i'll send it out yeah but you can certainly what else do you want to include in that application okay well i mean i i guess the check mark whether or not you what which one of the things you fall
into whether or not you're a teacher admin yeah or parent so that they at least we know who those are advocates here but um the you said north korean only residents but if you say parent if they happen to have an idt and then you say what is that i mean i guess there's northern school districts okay yeah i'm in parents of an old north school district student or something yeah i would say yes i mean this is something you'd say or something yeah because if they do have that if you send it out to our normal distribution plan like that that is you mentioned two processes you mentioned one would be a one is a board committee and another is a district the one we're talking about is a district committee you're not necessarily
posting it it's not open to the public right it's okay it's a closed group too what do we want to name this committee officially i'm just thinking it's a funny task discrimination resolution committee yeah that sounds good right here and then and then the only other thing uh jim and i would say is we do need to have probably one of those uh if it's with that we need to have somebody who is actually facilitating that discussion because you get 11 people in that room yeah and it's kind of a free-for-all there has to there absolutely has to be an agenda and somebody who is you know marching marching through the agenda to make sure that you keep things within that time all voices are heard so so there needs to be a chairman there
has to be a chairman and if it's an administration if it's an administrative one would we have something from the administrative offices being the person who's doing that as opposed to because then we would be in cherry they're probably taking notes and everything else can i suggest like so you know i i'm not gonna put her on the spot but someone from the esd like they have a superintendent um that could come that's not part of north bend that could then right doesn't have anything right i don't think one will pay so it'll be free free i'll just have to ask okay um so i think that's a great idea with a cup of coffee right and again i'll have to i don't know that step very well so i'll have to sort of ask
um you know their their leadership team around who has some skill set in that area that could could facilitate to do this because it needs to be yeah are the this group's work and not certainly yeah so there would just be a facility that's truly their their job is to sort of make this an outcome and i think that whoever that is should probably be because you guys are the board members for that committee um i i would you guys would then just decide yes that that person's good or is that something that has to be affordable um no because this is really a district committee not a report so this is like again with some feedback i can kind of again roll out here here's here you can tell me what if you want
to see credentials if you want to see whatever you want to see if i like maybe get a couple options so you can small group can just choose yours yes or that they want to do it and i think that's kind of the same way so maybe we're asking the same person to facilitate is why do you want to do this which is sort of the same on this application why do you want to be part of the school so so is this a one time this is a one-time event we're gonna meet for two or three hours one evening um what uh that's hard i i i i don't want i don't know the last thing we need to do is brush something how long does it take you guys to do this i
think a couple months yeah and i think we did two two maybe maybe you can have two standing meetings for sure and then maybe more if needed if it's not you know revised and drafted so what's what's the deliverable is it's input from this committee to the board is that to look is it a list you want to create something or that's i guess that's drastic yeah it would be nice if they created a rough outline of what they believe would be the most uh beneficial non-discrimination resolution for north bend based on their experiences we could then bring that whatever that is because it's not going to be i don't think completely smooth and then we would only have to take a work session together to say we really like this part this part is
probably a wash move the things around figure out how we like it board up and then we put it on agenda i like i think the deliverable is probably the first meeting is just getting all the ideas out there the second one is then essentially creating a a proposal of a resolution i mean just kind of a draft but then we hopefully come back on that third meeting and then we at the board we read over it and say this this is this looks great or now let's tweak this what about this if we don't have any applicants can we recruit well i think i think once we once it does get sent down i i don't know why we can't say hey you know put your application in you know um i have a
question so if we're accepting like two from each category is it like uh first come first serve whoever sends their app in or they're calling in or and then will we take outside letters or just this little committee would you speak in the committee i don't think outside letters because that would be more voices yeah yeah yeah i think the point is to make that small group yeah and i don't know about first come first serve i don't think that's fair because no that's not way like keyboard warriors can they'd be like i don't know tickets it needs to be it needs to be fresh it needs to be represented right right yes we don't want it we don't want it in any one direction but we want a nice full body around it to
go around well-rounded everybody's got their opinions they're not all going to be the same and that's why it's going to be so darn good so i don't think the first come first because that could be bad for yeah anyway i think you hit on a great point i think you should be uh if you have two teachers you might have one i think you get a better a better deliverable it's one from this side from another perspective and that probably carries through the other parents the administrators you know and the classifieds that's how you're going to find the middle ground right there's some truth in each side of the argument right so we find the middle ground i think if we had the opportunity to look at who's choosing these people the three board members
make that determination as long as we do have one four and one again i mean you know it sounds bad to say it like that but i don't know any other language but um so that we can come to the middle ground because even look at what we all agree right but i think it's hilarious that we can't come up with the language well i think if you if you put in a little descriptor box like like you said why do you want to be on this you're going to be able to clean from the that description is to like yeah these two people would be great to have a conversation with them do like a sporting system it's like american lighting sure why not you know just come come in it works too i
don't know so it's something yes or no to like what do you believe in x yes or no are you like so you kind of can sit through like around some things um are you open to multiple ideas you want someone that at least can at least then the application says yes i'm open to multiple perspectives the other part is like what is your that you could get to it's an open-ended question around what is your feeling around non-discrimination what is your feeling about sure i mean just sort of like let them share and you'll probably be able to maybe a bit of where some people are leaning i don't know yeah i feel like in this day and age you're probably going to get some clear answers why why do you want to be
on this will you kind of hope to accomplish and the other one's like what are your feelings about this i mean maybe between the two things did you have something mary no i already i already said that thank you okay so we've got the deliverables so just restatement i think i heard is there's going to be two two meetings there'll be one where it's kind of a brainstorm where ideas are captured which i think we'd like to see the output for that and then the other one is a proposed draft any discrimination so those are the two deliverables and the two meetings is that correct good i feel like that's kind of where we were so just i don't want to get too much details but i guess i would like to understand the rough
timeline so there's an application process this is the first thing and then there's uh applicants are selected and then there's meeting one and being two we can probably ask applications we do by next week because we do want to move on this so well is that going to be is that going to be too soon considering we still have to get the application built like we then next week the application needs to be built and feedback given on nomination and then the week after that we get the application out then do we give them one or two weeks so application builds by next friday that we're doing like i mean that's what it feels like because we're going to we're going to need back to where they so christina so you're the application person one
more time you can say no not anymore let's do um so by next friday or thursday we can have the application ready to go and just pretty much make an announcement at our board meeting that is getting sent out and then i think we should provide at least a week a full week um to collect the applications back from people who are interested and then um what was the next one process i would say would happen during the third week in october so we have the first second and the third week that and then you're going to take that you're going to let everybody know and then it's going to be a scheduling frenzy of the last week watch over and figure out what everybody's going to be able to get together so you should
start in november by the sounds of it mm-hmm it's amazing how long it's gonna be i know right i mean is that kind of what happened to you guys did the it was anything you guys select the applicants by 21 october you know i think you could have a meeting the end one meeting at the end of october and one meeting uh the following week ideally yeah yeah and really yeah exactly well you have to make sure that you contact everyone who submitted applications saying hey so that may take a few days too um so i would even almost say that it seems uh applications selected by the 21st or 22nd of october and then contact is made that last week in october and then maybe you have the meeting the first week in november
first and second and then we should have a boardwork session before at the end of november the the work session there's a boardwork session the 21st is that right of november 18 18. so by that point maybe we could have this so we could talk about this in the 18th november what happened what was found where we're trying to come together and hopefully at that point be able to have a resolution that we can we had well again we'll have to just kind of be scheduled so we were doing like school improvement planning that we were talking about using that date that we can kind of do is sort of like we do extra meetings or moves other things um like in november school improvement plans that we're going to do with sharing we don't
have to do that necessarily at this time for another day or we had cooking i think getting this thing resolved so that we can move on to the other business that we have for the school districts so i think we have a rough timeline any other we have a deliverable a rough timeline any other things we need to talk about to creating this the sound of this one i'm just excited i think this is definitely a great idea can i just add one piece to this okay yeah well and now i just want to one reiterate i mean two people are listening to this group we're not doing any training this year so there is no training schedule that that and we will not do training in the future on this and i don't there
was i think there's some folks that maybe felt that way there was certainly no intent to make that happen like that if that happened it wasn't because it's intentional it is because these conversations about race sexism whatever the case any of these isms are really really uncomfortable they're really uncomfortable to address they're really uncomfortable to talk about it and i we can do this work and i'm gonna need some help to still do some work around this area today a group of kids surrounded a car brought one of our latinx female um where the police were called racial stories were given that's the stuff that's like yes we addressed the racism whatever might happen and that's all being investigated i also like the work that i was attempting to do and really what it was
about is there's that's really in your face racism yes let's address that the complaints which a lot of you haven't seen wasn't that clear it was more nuanced it was a clear retaliation against one of our black employees that wasn't seen as retaliation in the moment it was students that accused the district and were found guilty by an outside investigator of sexism racism but it's not the blatant in your face using the n word using like sexual discrimination it's more subtle and it's like and then our and our adults fail to recognize it so that's that's and i inherited that so that didn't really happen under the watch of me it didn't happen to the watch of discriminator but i was asked to come in around what do you do to stop that from happening
and it's not just a resolution and it's not policies because those were already existing this already says you can't do this it's illegal to do half these things but we wouldn't recognize the more subtle things that were happening and so that was really my intent around kind of a longer relationship trying to figure out how do you start to become war recognizing that hey yes these subtle things are in fact racism as well when you do certain things after event this may be seen as racial discrimination again an outside investigator said yes that's exactly what this is but we didn't recognize it at the time and so i'll need help around how do you do that like how do we get to that um without violating again i i appreciate this group i appreciate this
work i have no intention of making anyone feel that way like that was that if that's that's a byproduct of it wasn't intentional and again i think sometimes it's like we're trying to confront like why are kids doing surrounding a kid and use calling racial slurs i don't know why they're doing that and i'm trying to like dig a little deeper around like how do we how do we stop that how do we recognize that that's not okay but then it's the more subtle things that we're have that um when you do racist jokes and when everyone's laughing how do we put a stop to some that we understand that that actually is like there's people that don't find that funny this is really uncomfortable um and a place and a voice and a place
where you can bring those things up and so again that's i i love this work i love that we're gonna kind of put this together and come together as a team to do this and i'll need some help around hey if we're going to do training around this like what does that start to look like um and again i just need some guidance but i i want everyone to know and if there was some concern around superintendent because there's i watch social media i see some of this that social that kevin bogarton tyrant is gonna come and force this on folks i want to rest assured to this group to our parent community that that is not happening that won't happen it isn't happening it and if there's a reason around last year it wasn't
intentional that work is really not intended to be able to sit and get one time it's around an engaging conversation over time because you get it kind of past that really uncomfortable feeling to start to better understand sort of some of this and that's that was again the intent it wasn't around um i can live with all these things and i want you to rest assured that i i'm listening to you there is no contract we have no contract with anyone we will not have a contract with anyone i shared some information just recently about another event that we were looking at to kind of deal with um current investigation that information quickly got out we're i'm cancelling that conversation we have not signed anything we were just kind of having conversations but i'm already
getting threatened threats from the public um around that and so i'll just rest assured we're not doing any of that period and then we'll need to maybe get back we can do this but tell me then what we want to do and again i'll take your marching orders i i this is the group tell me what you want me to do i was initially doing the things that previous boards priors of this group wanted me to do and so again i i serve at the pleasure of this board and i will do what you want me to do i also need some direction of what do you want me to do to address some things that have happened here that are currently happening and i need to make sure well this is easy to address
when we have light racism that's happening in our spot we'll take care of that um and work through that but i also it's like there's a broader thing around making sure that we can recognize some of the more things that lead up to that so that's why i just wanted to weigh in a little bit and i'm excited about this one yeah thank you for sharing that i really appreciate that so on with respect to this topic is there anything else we have three minutes i think we can get the space mask well okay i do i do have one more question sorry do i have a couple minutes so the groups of people would that be like maybe parents slash grandparents or guardians because you know we we have those issues here in our
district and then what about uh just a couple of uh north end taxpayers that maybe um are interested from that perspective i i think since it's such a small my perspective since it's such a small group um we're grabbing two two people from the from there i think it needs to be people have kids in in the district um that's that's my perspective on that i think the parent aspect of it i mean you very well could be a grandparent because there are plenty of grandparents in our community that are raising their children who are guardians yeah i don't i don't see that as something that would need to be especially for them they would they would it's implied yeah okay thank you guardian guardian yeah well we have kind of a are the language
of views is like they're in a parental relationship with this a kid that lives with his grandparents they are in a parental relationship there then they are contacted do we need to reschedule the other agenda is that what we want to do yeah i mean we're going to be here for a while oh yeah we're going to be here forever yeah i think five weeks i think we reached it to 20 21 10 the local control face mask we'll do that in another work session tdd to be determined okay some reason you have a you have a special needs schedule for october 21st that would be anything before that would be you have to we'll have to just make sure that you're available on a we're doing thursdays another thursday you have a regular board
meeting on the 7 next week the week after that is the 14th so that's a possibility it's not currently and then just as a suggestion maybe some of the things that were potentially gonna happen in november maybe they could be moved up to the upcoming week if we have time never mind but you're gonna take on this yeah that's true that one might take well yeah again i don't wanna i don't again i usually do the november because it takes a little bit of time just for their teams to pull together okay so that the november was sort of the earliest we can do it later it's not it's okay we can find a time later cool cool that sounds good yeah no october i don't know that any of us really expected this to
happen when we walked in here today i did not i i have my hopes you know i think this was this was awesome like this is what it was this is what this is supposed to be exactly is exactly what it's supposed to be i'm so super excited that we got to hang out and do this tonight it's a lot of fun good progress and the fact that mary's been behind me the whole time has not bothered me at all i i appreciate all of you and all of your comments um being being a newbie i i really appreciate you um giving us some extra time to learn to learn a few things yeah it's a great format it works it's informal all right i think we're good good to adjourn the team's good emotional
i don't know you very end are you ready
