001I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We're going to go and start off with student recognitions. So, I'm going to ask Devin Barley to come up for the girls IHSA state wrestling finals and we'll go there. Uh so, before we hear from coach Johnson, our girls wrestling coach, I wanted to recognize the two athletes in they show what toughness and grit and resilience is, what they truly look like. They've earned their incredible achievements throughout this year and they have an unbreakable competitive spirit. So, I want to say how proud we are of these two ladies that are that are about to be recognized. They put girls wrestling on the map for
002Madison and we're just so proud of them. So, I want to introduce coach Johnson and let him say a few words about his athletes. >> [applause] >> Uh thank you guys for having us. Thank you guys for coming. Kind of been an annual thing since we started girls wrestling here. Great support from the top down through the administration and the community and that's what it kind of lets us keep doing this year after year after year. Um Devin hit it on the head. A couple of young ladies that really exemplify what it is to be a wrestler through hard work and grit and determination. Also, exemplify what I think anyway that it means to be a cub, community, compassion, caring for other people, things like that. First young lady I'll bring up, Maya Bullock. >>
003[applause] >> Uh Maya's a junior. She started her wrestling her freshman year when we actually opened up and had our first official team. It was still before the IHSA sanctioned wrestling, but she just kind of hit the ground running. I think a person that maybe a lot of people from the outside looking in wouldn't think is is a wrestler or or >> [laughter] >> and kind of beats all those preconceived notions about what we can be as people and then the way that other people look at us. Maya had a tremendous year. Sectional champ. Uh finished the year 30 and 8. All of those eight losses coming from other state level competitors in Indiana and Ohio. Um obviously, she's a three-time regional qualifier, but this year kind of pushed through um with just a little
004bit of believing in herself and that commitment to herself, not just to the sport, to become a state qualifier. Does all of this while saying yes to every activity that she can and holding a 4.498 GPA. >> [applause] >> First young lady, Macy Skinner. >> [applause] >> I know I'm sure everybody is used to hearing, especially when it comes to these student recognitions through the school, multi-sport athlete every year in high school, the face of the girls program since she stepped into high school. It's it's very odd coming to those last few times I get to kind of brag about everything she's done this year, why we're here. 37 and 2 record. Only loss coming to a four-time state champ in the state finals and then the other one coming to what I assume to
005be an eventual state champ in Ohio when their tournament concludes. All that while holding a 4.402 GPA. >> [applause] >> Her career accolades, four-time state qualifier, three-time state placer, three-time academic all-state, two official IHSA sectional titles, two IHSA regional titles. Um and has just been an absolute like blast. Such an honor to coach this young lady and watch her grow through all those things. So, thank you guys again for >> [applause] [applause] >> Now we have the Madison Junior High School presentation. So, I'll ask Jordan Warner to come up. Please. >> [snorts] >> All right, good afternoon everyone. Obviously, I've got Mr. Horvath and Mr. Fry here. They're going to help me out. We were told we have to keep this under 15 minutes because that's the record we're shooting as it's 14 minutes and
00630 seconds. So, we're going to try our best. First thing we've got is just celebrations, things that are happening. One of the most recent ones is I-Learn checkpoint. So, for us 6th and 8th grade ELA scores are above state average. Our ELA in those departments, too, are really a strong suit for us. So, we're definitely excited to see the growth of math as well. Fourth grade transition day. That's been a huge success and I'll show you that in just a moment. That will That again is going to be for us on March 4th. Cub Fest. So, we're kind of crossing the ditch and Cub Fest Day will also be our fourth grade transition day. The next one I'm going to skip for just a second cuz I'm going to go into a little detail about
007that. The other one is music production. Um our performing arts team is working very well together. I've never seen such collaboration with that as far as all Mrs. Bullock, Mr. Even Mr. Fagan in there, Mr. Bence and Mr. Navarro all working collectively together. Mrs. Gergis from the high school, Mr. Olrick, it's just it's amazing what they're able to do through that music production class as far as wiring and cables together, doing the recording through choir and band is is just something we're really excited about and we'll show some of that at Cub Fest this year. Um TBRI for us, too, is students being provided opportunities. We are doing a lot with nurture groups, modified incentives for identified behavior students with high needs. We have some students who have identified that are just really need a
008support. So, our first celebration is actually going to be taking place this Friday where we're taking a group of students who have just met some identified targets to McDonald's and then also Gymnastics World. So, we've got a group of 11 students that are going to be doing that this Friday that are kind of have been working through AAA for us. So, they've just a more identified goal. Including staff, we're doing scenarios during staff meeting. So, every single day we're every single time we have a staff meeting, Mr. Horvath really taking the lead on creating scenarios. So, we're all on the same common page or the same common place and language that we are using as far as how we're identifying student behaviors and how we're handling those through the TBRI matrix. We're doing again a
009lot with restorative circles with teachers. We had another one today where we've got a conflict with a teacher teacher and a said student where we bring them together and have a really good positive outcome and usually those have really good success for us as far as repairing that relationship piece. The next thing is our Bearded Food Pantry. So, if you've not seen that, that's a picture in the bottom right hand corner. That was all community donated. So, we took the food drive and basically we're providing a food for all of our families within the junior high. It's something that we send out a Google form, they fill it out and then they just show up at the school and our kids and our staff are picking those items for them. We have things in there
010as far as people donated homemade birthday cakes where you can like birthday cakes for students who would never get one that doesn't even require students to even have an oven. Like we've thought through the process of we have some people who live in campers, they don't have an oven or a stove. So, we make sure that we provide those items for them to have what they need. Some of that you can't see, too, is like items such as hygiene things. So, laundry detergent, soap and things like that that are also on there. So, that just constantly keeps getting restocked through community efforts. We've had some like Detillo's Food Services also like sometimes they have extra product, they'll donate that and deliver that to their food truck and then we'll provide that in our food pantry
011as well. The other thing that you'll see is the new outdoor seating options. So, that's going to get ready to roll. We've already got several of those donated through Mr. Fagan's space on the side of the building. We've got all new benches donated because the other ones through the Eagle Scout project were wooden and started to kind of fall apart. So, all those have been donated. Same thing with the red tables. We're going to start having like an outdoor seating lunch option for 7th and 8th grade students because we have a new recess model that we're trying with that. So, there will be some of that will be again displayed at Cub Fest, but those are the tables that were donated. So far, we've gotten three and our goal will be about 10. We've got
012two of them that will be designated a staff with umbrellas. So, staff can have a area [clears throat] outside to to eat during lunch. The next thing is we're having a new mascot. So, we're trying to merge that bear cub dynamic thing that everybody talks about. So, if you look, that's the design of our new one. So, we've got a full-size Ashley's worked together and with us to basically make that design. That's in production now, so it'll be a full-size. We will use that a lot through events. We made it junior high feel where you can see we've got Crocs with socks and the flat bill kind of thing. So, it's got a backpack. So, it's going to be really cool. We've talked about things through they'll be using What are those shoes called? What
013are the ones? The Crocs where you can put like the the Jibbitz and putting those to do some sales and things. We've got some cool ideas coming. The last thing that I'll talk about too is the student entry withdrawal information. That's been a huge success for us. If you open up that document that's linked there, this is some data that just goes through how we One of the things for us that was big was just the recruitment and retention piece. We always saw a lot of students in moving in between schools within the county. So, when you look at some of these numbers, the one that's going to that's hard for us to pull is entry data because that's not going to capture students who moved in over the summer. There's not a way within
014the Skyward reporting system for us to every single kid to start the year isn't is a new entry. So, I can't capture summer. But, I can kind of give you statistics. Usually, we lose a lot of students again in county. We only lost four to nearby schools. So, the withdrawal is all withdrawal including summer. So, that's all of our numbers. That's huge for us. So, we lost four to nearby schools just two of those buildings and I've listed those there. We lost 11 to a virtual or home school. One of those students was a fifth grader, so we don't have a fifth grade up virtual option just because we don't we don't have that option in our curriculum. So, we lost one there and then the other 13 moved away, moved outside of Madison. The
015entry was 23 students from August 8th. So, that's the day after August 7th is first day of school. So, August 8th we've gained 23. You can see eight were local move-ins inside Jefferson County. 10 move-ins from home school virtuals. They were home school virtuals chose to come back. And then five move-ins from outside of Madison. The other one you can see is our virtual number. So, we have eight students that are full-time virtual. The other are seven students that are on a hybrid schedule. So, we have some students that come and are in person for us for a few periods. Some that are take one period there in person. So, that's how many students we have within our virtual. You can see when I started there 3 years ago, we were our number was 694.
016As of today, we're at 755. When we started the school year, our uptick number is right around 760 770. Our seventh grade class, as you can see down below, is one of our lowest. It's it's at 186 and all the other numbers are trending or sorry, 179. All the other numbers are 193 197 the incoming I don't know what's going on with my voice. The incoming fourth grade group is right around 200 as well. So, we'll continue to see numbers grow for us, which is something that's really really exciting. Um The next one is just supporting growth of our students. Our student advisor or Nope, that's not me. That's you. So, the goals academic achievement and growth. Again, dedicated interventions for seventh and eighth. That first period for us is huge. So, that's where we
017identify students that are we've never had an intervention block. So, ELA and math had a have a dedicated intervention block for students that need support. That's also our Bear Necessities time. We're focusing on student behaviors. And then also any other it's more like a home room block for us. It's a shortened period. It also is a time we get some of those prerequisite electives out of the way so we can give some of our advanced level students more of an opportunity in the day to take some of those higher level electives. Like if they're taking Spanish or French, they'll be able to do music production or choir or band. The next one is MTSS meetings. Those are going really well for us. We've started including checkpoints in the grades with that. And then we're pulling
018students into those meetings. A lot of times you might have a student that's just failing multiple subjects. We'll pull that one student in with all those teachers and have a meeting and kind of put that two student and and put something in place where we're communicating with parents and then doing a check-in every month to see how things are progressing if their number of assignments are going down and whatnot. Next one is our other biggest area of growth is for us if you look at the A-F accountability report, special education for us is a huge one as far as what we're looking for student growth. So, we met together as far as coming up with a plan with the special education team to target students and really focus on the growth component. So, we're we've
019got some things in place with our screener, which is we're using as IXL. And we're talking about at least one grade level for um they must increase one grade level for 75% of our special education population. So, we're looking at the 100 point range. We have students that have already made that plus some, which is really exciting already. Students safe staff student and staff safety and well-being starting staff members with school safety and TBRI table top activities, which I talked about already. We're continuing our new digital hallway pass system, which has been huge for us. It prevents a lot of students. We had a always big issues with students in a seven period day. Every single period they're going to a new teacher needing a bathroom break. The pass system eliminates that from happening because
020all the things behind it. We also have students who are not supposed to be in the hallway with other students. We can put an encounter prevention in place where if one kid's in the hallway, it denies that other kid the the ability to go to that hallway. So, if we've got two kids who are not having conflict, we put them in the system, it denies that request. It allows us to to require if they want to see a principal or something, they can do that without having to raise their hand in class. It's a system that automatically comes to us and it really it really has been a game-changer for us. We've been doing that for about a year and a half now. AAA again is one that's a continued success. Um We are getting
021ready to take our next one at the end of February, beginning of March. We're going to go to the Fun Factory. So, our kids that have made the requirements to attend will go to the Fun Factory. They just have to go for the month of February meeting the criteria. The first one we did Dairy Queen, which is huge huge success. And then the last one we did a magician where a magician came in and then we had the concession stand open. So, those have been really good successes for us. Attendance, [clears throat] we've also hit student attendance rate of 95%. Um We do a lot with meetings where we bring kids in because most of it's just they don't have the information they need about how the excused absences work versus unexcused. Usually, it's just
022a no call no show. So, we really give them the educational piece. We pick up kids all the time if they need a ride. So, they know that they have communication that if they just missed the bus, they can get a hold of us and we'll make that arrangement to get them. Last thing is staff recruitment and retention. Again, the TBRI support for staff. David's done a really good job as far as meeting staff needs for through TBRI support. And he can talk about that. The other one is we've done a food truck. We've done free spirit wear. All drink carts, regulation fidget tools, snacks. We are constantly doing everything with through PTO has been a huge help with Susie as well. Just to Susie Glasgow does a great job with our PTO as far
023as coordinating special things for our staff. We again, our goal is to have at least one monthly celebration or gift to give our staff every single month. That's just a goal for us. And then the other one is and continue to decrease the amount of students leaving school to go to nearby schools. I mean, like I just showed you earlier, we are really really happy with the progress on that goal this year. >> [clears throat] >> I'm just going to be blunt. We're not going to get it done in 14 and a half minutes because we have so many great things to share at the junior high. So, and I don't speak as quickly as that. Um my brain does not work that fast. But, >> [laughter] >> we do have a lot of great
024things taking place at the junior high. So, all of what Jordan just kind of encompassed I'm going to kind of share how all that works and and how we've made that happen not just from the three of us, but it includes student groups and so forth. So, beginning with the student advisory group. Actually, Mr. Bullock who was just in here with her daughter with the wrestling, she kind of led that charge about 2 years ago. Kelly Massey got on board. Brenda Gallagher got on board. So, we have student groups that come together once a week. You can see that we've got multiple groups that come up there. It's anything from digital groups to presentations to social media. And that has led us into allowing us to have end of year events. We've got right now
025a big Valentine sucker hide. So, what's happening is staff and students are hiding suckers before school starts. There's a little tag on the card that has a name, write your grade level. You're in a box, you're in for a drawing. It's just a great way to keep kids in the hallways engaged trying to find suckers, but also get to class in time as well making sure that that we had that piece also. So, it's just a great student group. Fortunately, my son and daughter have been involved in it. So, I know the benefits of it. It's just been a great piece for that. We've had dances. We're going to have a dance again here in a couple of weeks. We have students taught lessons. So, our fifth and sixth graders get taught student lessons, social
026cues on on how to respect or what's responsibility, the time management as they begin to progress toward that seventh eighth grade. So, just a lot of benefits to having that piece in there as well. So, Jordan also talked a little bit about attendance. It has been a huge plus this year. And again, it doesn't come from us. That's led by counselors, SRO. We have every other week meetings with probation. We have those as well. So, there's a lot of accountability that comes into that. And using that word accountability, we know attendance is a big part of the accountability now for the school grade. So, we've really taken it on ourselves that we need to make sure we're getting that rate that we're supposed to be. So, we're out there conducting visits when we can. We're
027out there making phone calls when we see students are out for a couple days with no excuse. So, we were really trying to get out there quicker than we're used to just to make sure we show these families that, "Hey, it's important we've seen your kids not here a couple days." Um just that touch point for them. Um as well, it's really cut down on that chronic absenteeism. Those those probation meetings are going a lot faster um because we have less kids to talk about, which is great. TBRI is a big piece. Um so, Dr. Brown got us on this about probably about almost 2 and 1/2 3 years ago. It's one of the arrows that lined up um with with what we're doing here in Madison. It's been great and now we even have
028our own two coaches in the district. It's just to show the importance of TBRI. Um Michelle and I work very closely together um on what we do. So, recently my thing that I've done is um a survey to our staff as to what kind of fidget or hand busyness do they need to keep themselves regulated. So, in our staff meeting yesterday, we just talked about the number one um piece that really helps students engagement in in being attentive in school is making sure our teachers are regulated. So, we're trying to provide those resources and those tools. Um we also have Hoss Coffee on Fridays. Every Friday they can order what they'd like from Hoss. We have um it's going to be on the school on our accounts that they're going to get a free drink
029on March 4th. We know it's a big day, Cub Fest, fourth grade transition, eighth grade across the ditch. So, we're going to put it on our tab um that they get a free drink that day from The Attic. We work closely with them as well. So, that's an another big piece coming up. So, we really understand that we've got to provide that nurturing piece so they see that, "Hey, we've got your back. We know that these 2 months are long even though we seem to be never be in school." Um we know how the the winter semester can be a long 3 months and we've got to put in some fun in there and some relaxation to let them know that we're supporting them. Um Michelle meets with students as well. She's not only teaching
030Spanish any um at this point, but she's also meeting with students who our counselors feel need that extra touch point um just to speak with her and she's got that professionalism to work through groups and things. Um and then lastly, it just kind of goes through that piece of what um who's involved in TBRI and what's taking place. Jordan kind of already talked about the next AAA um that's taking place. We're looking forward to that um as well. And then the food bank was already kind of um discovered discovered and talked about. We've got 30 families at this point that are using it on a regular basis. Um so, that's just from late November till now. So, we expect that number to continue to grow. Um right now, it's pick up only, but we are
031kind of looking at can we do the delivery option if needed um in future years cuz we'd like to do that. We know that that picking up is not always accessible for families um to do that. So, our students lead that part, but for our staff, um we've talked about the tabletop pieces. The last one we did yesterday was you've got a student that's just not paying attention. They're getting out of their seat. So, what's that level one TBRI look like in your classroom? What's that level two TBRI? And then we just have group discussions from there. It's very brief. It's just that quick engagement, right? We talk about getting that that catcher at the beginning of a lesson. For our students, we want the same thing for our staff at the staff meetings. Just
032that quick little punch to get them make sure they're awake. And if we're not doing a TBRI, then we're doing a school safety scenario as well. And um we've had Mr. Mishino, who is uh hoping to become an administrator, and Officer Daily those um for the most part. So, they have that role. So, it's not always coming from us as well. Digital hall pass system was already talked about. It has been a great asset. Um I get passes often from kids that just want to talk about schedules or they don't want to talk to counselors. They just want to let some things out about what's going on or, "Hey, this is going to this is what's happening in this hallway." So, it has been a huge benefit for us cuz it keeps us in the
033loop as what's going on in the in the middle school world. Um discipline. So, this week 2 days to go um has been a a fairly good week, really um with that piece. And I will say that what I kudos to our staff yesterday is what they're doing so well is when they're filling out those referrals, they're telling us all these different practices they're trying and trying and trying to do to keep these kids in the classroom. Cuz we know the importance of kids need to be in the classroom as much as possible until it becomes a major distraction. Um so, they're really good about that piece. Um we're going through and finalizing our updated uh code of conduct and handbook for next year. So, we're working on that. We utilize that often to make
034sure we're being consistent um knowing that each case and scenario is different, but trying to be consistent amongst the three of us. Can't always communicate what the consequence is going to be. So, we try to utilize that as well. Um and then he already talked about a lot of restorative meetings. Um I've had a couple where they end up going well. And just to be up front, sometimes the restorative meetings don't go great. Um we and then at that point we have to find out who we're going to support um and how we're going to make that best fit so that student can hopefully go back to class, but not until all parties um are ready for that piece. And then my last part I already kind of discussed a little bit, just the appreciation
035TBRI. That's that's really important to me um that our teachers are feeling appreciated. Um so, that [clears throat] is something that we're going to continue to do. Um and again, we want to appreciate the the board and the administration here in the district that they've given us this TBRI piece. I had no idea what TBRI was 3 years ago, but it's really a lot of things that people are already doing, but now we've got another acronym in education, but it's meaningful and it's purposeful and you've got to make sure the staff and students see that. So, I kudos to what we're doing and and Michelle Stewart and Liddy Reardon, thank you for for all you've done. We're over 14 and 1/2 minutes, Brandon, so just >> [laughter] >> Hey, now that we've gone over, I
036can take 45 of my own minutes, right? >> [laughter] >> And also because um David jinxed us, I'm not really feeling well, so I might have to take off tomorrow. >> [laughter] >> Um Yeah, cuz Jordan's out tomorrow, too. So, David can handle it. Um so, every Wednesday um obviously we dismiss early and thanks to the board, uh you know, one of the things that well what we do is we meet with PLCs in our staff meet um every Wednesday in individual groups. Um you know, and it's really been in the year and a half now that we've been doing this, we're seeing some tremendous growth in not only what our student achievement is doing. I mean, we can link that back to what we were talking about, but also I mean, those just those
037strong discussions that our staff are having every Wednesday, you know, we jump from different tables um like and we'll sit and have listen to their conversations. And you know, I was at a table uh a couple weeks ago. Well, now, probably a month ago now with the snow. Um but um one group talking about now that they're back to the point where really where they started and now they're really seeing, "Oh, this is what we did last time and now they're making that connection. Now, this is how we changed it or this is what's been improvement." So, we're seeing a lot of improvements there. So, um and just the those strong discussions on what it's doing to help um build our student academics. So, um you know, they start with celebrations always about what's positive,
038what's working. Uh look at that student data from the prior week. You know, they're even looking at the the long haul when they're especially like if we're looking at math and uh English, they're looking at their checkpoint information and just kind of help guiding what their instruction's going to be like for the following week. So, um really strong discussions there. Um areas of focus, making sure that data is valuable and it's not just something that is done to put on the paper. They're utilizing it to say, "Hey, this didn't work or what didn't work?" And they're having those strong conversations with each other. Uh and it may not be the same exact thing, but they can at least see, "Hey, this is something I tried also and it's also helping improve." So, um So, in
039that Sorry, as we talk about that tier one instruction, so that's the everybody gets. Okay, so that's where that data is looking at, too. And then we move to that tier two, that intervention time where only a portion of students will get that um and how that's that data is helping guide them or moving them into groups so that they can say, "Okay, this is now what we need to focus on with this set of group um in that tier two." Um using that data point to help drive that. So, um You know, and then we've been um starting or like start at the beginning of the PLC, we give like, "Hey, this is the question we're going to ask." Or this is what we want to guide you with. And then at the end,
040sometimes we'll ask them a question just kind of our own check for understanding kind of say, "Hey, what are things working?" And these are two that we've used. Um name one thing that made you a better teacher today um after you completed your PLC. And then the student achievement, how are your actions improving student learning? Um what is the best practice? And then they can like we've had some discussion um also around those. So, um also our special ed just special education staff, um they float. So, they there are weeks that they meet specifically um in just a group um and sometimes with our district people, but what they'll do in our PLCs, they'll move into all different areas. So, like they might even do um social studies one week or there might be some
041there and then some will move to English and math. So, they kind of are jumping around there as well having those discussions in each one of those pods or different groups. So, um so that that where they're co-teaching and those partners that they're linking that connection as well. So, All right, there we go. I think that's all mine, right? Yep. All right, last one. So, I [clears throat] always get the privilege about kind of talking what's next. Uh this is where I get really excited. So, because there's always a next for us. Um we are always pushing the envelope. I will tell you probably what gives me the most joy is we do student tours all the time. Like I did another student tour today where we got another student that's the another student that's
042moving to the community. And when we do those tours, it's kind of a thing that when we're walking the space and we're going through rooms and classrooms they're like we don't we've never seen this and that's like okay let's keep going. So when you go through music production, when you go through e-sports, when you go through the classrooms they're like we've never seen anything like this before. And so that gives me joy and purpose to know let's keep pushing and moving that needle. So again the music production class uh the students in grades 5 through 8 have access to this class. Uh it's a five it's our our four and a half week rotations. So all of our students are getting every single fifth and sixth grader. Uh grades 7 through 8 will again our
043one semester course that all courses offered as an elective. We've already had the conversations with the high school about what's next as we've this is our first year for it so we'll have eighth graders that are moving on. You know if you've not been to the junior high you will see kids carrying guitars all the time. We have inside recess for 7th and 8th and we have kids like can I go grab my guitar and come down to the cafeteria and play. And these are kids that you have never like they brought guitars and like my dad said this guitar in the back and I've brought it to like we have guitar racks in there and these kids are passionate. My my my nephew that's a fifth grader who is like hey um this year
044I want to I want to I want a guitar. And so that was just something that you're we're seeing that. So again what's next culinary is the one that the students are pushing for with us obviously with the farm stout piece too. Uh so we're going to start working in collaboration with our health class um because we feel like we can do that naturally and organically. Uh the space is already kind of ready after child care relocation too so we've got some ideas for there but we also have an idea to start that even sooner uh based upon the location of where our health class is and then where that culinary space will be. Um again the expansion of the Bear Den Pantry we're going to keep pushing that envelope. Like we know that we're
045just not the only school that needs that support. Um so if we can continue to to offer that we actually had it accidentally get leaked out to some other schools that that requested that. We filled those orders for some other schools. We'd love to start you know we know that we have the space right now to make it work so if we could do something in the future to fulfill orders for other families we will gladly do so. We're just not there yet. Um we're getting ready to start a first period t-shirt design and printing class. One of the things that's important for me is is when we get new staff members and when we get students to our building I want to give them some gear. I want to give them a t-shirt to
046say welcome to the junior high because most of it if you're in eight or something like that the funds and we have spirit days you don't have that. So if I can give them a little sign of appreciation why not let the kids design those shirts and print those shirts. We're not printing big quantities of things but just enough for us to have a little bit in stock take some pride when we do have these groups that are six kids. You know we've got spell bowl why not print those shirts ourselves and just offer those. So we have a design again there will be certain level students during that first period class that we can make that happen. So we've got really cool ideas with that. Again the performing arts project uh Shawn wrote a
047grant already for um a pretty significant grant for us to really blow that that place up. Sorry bad word bad word choice there. SROs. So um just for us to really continue to offer something we do not offer. That performing arts thing is huge for us with so many kids participating. We are want that the the kids to see the investment um and we know that we've got a great community that can get behind us to support that project with good connections. And for me I don't want our people to ever feel stagnant and we want to continue to push the envelope and I think uh we've got a team right now that's really ready to do that. Um again e-sports for us just started it's the first time we're in the state competition level.
048Um so we're running five days a week every night there's an e-sports class that each night it's a different game. So that's up and running. Um again classes are evolving with particular focus. We're going to have them start doing scrolling announcements uh digital newsletters for families start producing some of that stuff within the classroom. Um when you walk in our screens that are not being used right now we've already got an idea where they're going to take over those and kids are going to put student birthdays lunch menus all that stuff why not let our e-sports classes do all that. Um again MTSS meetings increase focus on student data sheets and tier one screeners. Um so we'll dive deeper into progress monitor data for all those interventions to see how our students are performing but
049we've really been trying to pull students into those meetings instead of because when those kids come to the table and they see how much we all care they start to care too. So we've seen great progress when we've been able to pull the kids in. The last one again you saw the data fourth grade student retention. Um that's a big one for us. They they have the junior high scary so that day when they come over they leave there and they're like they're ready to come. You know so we we we really take pride in that fourth grade uh success as far as we did not have a lot of kids for the first time leaving because they were scared about coming to the junior high. Um so we've got really good plans in place
050as far as things that we're doing. Uh if you don't know this you probably seen on Facebook we've got $4,000 donated the other day to provide t-shirts for all eighth graders and fourth graders from the community uh to give those students shirts and things at Cub Fest to increase uh the Cub Fest involvement as well. So that's just some of the things that are on the horizon for us but that's probably not it. I can tell you we're going to keep keep moving the needle so. Uh last piece again is just I would sum this up because I know this for us it's student engagement it's discipline it's accountability as David and Brandon have already talked about. Um the most important thing is just valuing the people that work in our building. Valuing the students
051valuing our people uh and that's number one for us. And if we can continue to do that then we're just really excited about where we are right now and where we're going. We've just got a great staff behind us and you can feel the vibe when you come into the junior high. You know we're we're not the we say this we're not the armpit we're the heartbeat. >> [laughter] >> Ronnie knows you. So we just like to have fun with it but at the same point too you know it's it's we're we just want to keep to keep pushing that envelope so. Have fun it's you know if you're working at junior high setting you got to have a little fun with it you guys. >> [laughter] >> That's it for us. Thank you very
052much for that. Besides a lot of good information you could actually feel the excitement that you three all three spoke about so thank you because you can feel it. So moving on to the consent agenda. We'll start off with 26-101 approval of agenda for the February 11th 2026 regular meeting. 26-102 approval of minutes of the January 8th work session January 14th 2026 statutory Board of Finance and regular Board meeting. 26-103 approval of payment of claims. 26-104 approval of financial report. 26-105 approval of construction payments. Dr. Brown. I recommend the board approve with one motion and one vote the consent agenda items 26-101 through and including 26-108.1 as presented. Can I get a motion? I make a motion we approve 26-101 through 26-108.1. Can I get a second? I'll second. Any discussion? Vote signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. Dr. Brown. Right. I'd like to ask, first of all, our athletic director, Devin Briley. You've got a couple of important new hires. You'd like to introduce some new coaches to us. Thank you all. Um good
057evening. It's my pleasure to introduce our new head football coach, Patrick Morrison. Coach Morrison brings a wealth of knowledge and several years of coaching experience to our program and has spent the past year as an assistant within our program. He's passionate about developing young men both on and off the field and is excited to build on the foundation already in place as he leads our program forward. Please join me in welcoming Coach Morrison to the podium to say a few words. Thank you guys. Thank you, Dr. Brown and the school board, um Mr. Lawhead, Mr. Briley, Mr. Brookhollow, the interview committee for this opportunity. Uh in eighth grade I played football at Madison. I'd played basketball and decided to go out and give football a try. After that season I fell in love with football
058um and it was my dream to be the head football coach one day at Madison. Well, not everybody gets to live their dream a second time. So, I'm proudly and excited about this opportunity to be the head football coach here at Madison again. When I stepped away 7 years ago, wasn't fully ready to step away then. So, that that fire reignited in me a couple couple months ago and when the opportunity presented itself I was more than willing to go after it. Um Obviously, we have great players here and they're obviously even better young men. Planning to put together a great staff. Um and looking forward to making a positive difference in building a family atmosphere. So, and lastly, I'd like to thank my my family for being here this evening, Jessica, Collins, Tatum, and
059Asher. Although, if you look at my sons right now, I don't know if they knew I was applying for the soccer job or basketball job based on the balls that they brought this evening, but >> [laughter] >> but thank you guys very much. So, Congratulations. Now, it's my pleasure to introduce our new head softball coach, Kevin Briley. Coach Briley brings a wealth of knowledge and several years of coaching experience and has also spent the last year as an assistant in our softball program. Um he's has a strong passion for the game and is excited to continue the growth for the program while creating positive competitive experience for our student athletes. Please join me in welcoming Coach Briley to the podium to say a few words. All right. Thanks, Devin. First, I want to say thanks
060to Dr. Brown and the board for this opportunity. Um you know, I was lucky enough to be in the program last year and and and loved it here. So, I've I've coached uh many places in the area and I will tell you guys this this is a great place to coach. So, you guys should be very proud and I know you are. You have a great staff, a great administration. Your facilities are second to none. I brag on those all the time. I brag on the weight room. You know, I've been in University of Louisville football weight room and I said this is a mini UofL weight room. I mean, it's impressive. So, kudos to all of you and everybody that's had a hand in the facilities and giving these athletes, you know, first-class opportunities.
061So, um and and lastly, but probably more importantly, you guys have great students and we have great kids on the softball team. I I really enjoyed working with those girls last year and we've got a great group that are going to come out this year. Uh we'll have a call out meeting tomorrow and we're expecting probably 25, give or take a few. Those are great numbers. So, we're ready to get started and again, thank you so much. Thank you. >> [applause] >> Welcome, Coach Briley and Coach Morrison. Thank you. And uh to our athletic director, thanks for being here tonight and thank you for managing the last couple of weeks during all of that weather, all of the postponements and scheduling and practices. You did a super job. Very proud of you. I'd also like
062to introduce the director of safety and security, Mark True, who's here to introduce our new SRO. Mark. Thank you. First of all, I'd like to say, Dr. Brown, thank you and to the board, thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce a new member to our team. And I want to thank you guys for your commitment to safety. You know, um the number one deterrent of acts of violence, criminal activity, and and crime in our area is officer presence. And we're very fortunate throughout our school district to have SROs in every building. Uh and we're about to fill that position so that we do that in every single building that we have. But it's the number one deterrent. Having a physical person officer there who has badge, has a gun, has some experience, has
063the vehicle that our community can see when they go by. It's comforting as a parent to know that you guys take pride and that you're committed to that. So, thank you for that. I talk like talk a little bit about um the new member to our team. His name's Brian Hall. He is a graduate of Madison Consolidated High School. He went on to pursue his law enforcement interest at Vincennes University where he studied criminal law. He then moved on and pursued his law enforcement career with Scottsburg Police Department. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and he has spent 28 years with the police department. So, he brings with him a vast amount of training, knowledge, and experience and we're very excited to to bring him to our team. So, it's my pleasure to
064introduce to you guys and welcome you, Brian, Brian Hall. >> [applause] >> Thank you, Mark, and welcome to Officer Hall. No comments. We'll move on to action items. So, 26-109, recommendation for approval of the following resolutions. Uh first one, resolution to transfer appropriations 2025 education fund, resolution to transfer appropriations 25 2025 operations fund, resolution to transfer appropriations 2025 debt service fund, resolution to deposit or transfer interest to the 2026 education fund. Dr. Brown. Yes. Biannually on June 30th and December 31st, the finance department reviews the approved budget for necessary adjustments. These transfers do not increase the total approved appropriations budgeted for 2025. These transfers merely allow us to make appropriate adjustments to individual accounts. So, I'm recommending the board approve the resolutions as presented. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion. Can I
065get a second? I'll second. Any discussion? >> [snorts] >> Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-110, approval of resolution to transfer amounts from education fund to operations fund monthly. Dr. Brown. I recommend the board approve the resolution to transfer funds from the education fund to the operations fund monthly. We are recommending that 105,000 be transferred from the ed fund to the ops fund to reimburse the operations fund for expenses that are not allocated to student instruction and learning under 42-5 on a monthly basis for 2026 as needed. Asking for approval. Can I get a motion? I make a motion that we excuse me, approve 26-110. Can I get a second? I second. Any discussion? Okay. Vote signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-111, approval of 2027 impact aid section 7002 application.
066Dr. Brown. I recommend the board approve the 2027 impact aid section 7002 application. The impact aid program grants fund it grants funds to school districts containing federally owned land in an attempt to supplement the funds lost uh in property not being locally taxed. So, asking for approval of that application. Can I get a motion? I make a motion we approve 26-111. Can I get a second? I'll second. Any discussion? Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-112, approval of 2026-2027 Madison Junior High School course curriculum guide. Dr. Brown. I recommend the board approve the 2026-27 MJHS course curriculum guide as presented. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion. Can I get a second? I'll second. Any discussion? Okay. Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-113. Approval of 2026-2027 MCHS course
067curriculum guide, Dr. Brown. Yeah, I recommend the board approve the 2026-27 MCHS course curriculum guide as presented. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion to approve 26-113. Can I get a second? I second. Any discussion? Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-114. Approval of agreements, contracts. A, approval of lawn care contract. B, approval of agreement with Enviroscape, Dr. Brown. Yes, I'm recommending the board approve the lawn service agreement with Green Thumb Lawn Service in the amount of 49,920 for 26 weeks of lawn service. The locations are the administration building, >> [snorts] >> the high school, the junior high in Anderson. The duties will be mowing, spraying at the fence line, weed eating, blowing clippings off the walkways and roadways, and trash pick up off the grassy areas. So, asking for approval
068of that. And are you taking the second one now, too? >> That's I didn't know if you wanted to do both of them together. >> fine with me. >> Okay. >> And I'm also recommending the board approve the agreement in the total amount of $20,934.90 for Enviroscape. So, asking for approval of those two contracts. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion we approve 26-114. Can I get a second? I'll second. Any discussion? Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-115. Approval of Indiana online summer school courses, Dr. Brown. I recommend the board approve the Indiana online summer school courses. Our high school is using Indiana online to support students during the school year as well as the summer courses. The use of Indiana online provides flexibility for students to earn high school
069credits for courses that are not offered or do not fit within their schedules. Courses are delivered either asynchronously or on live or live via Zoom with a teacher four out of five days. This provides students with some flexibility to earn high school credits. So, asking for approval of the Indiana online summer school courses. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion. Can I get a second? I'll second. Any discussions on that? Okay. Signified by saying I. I. >> I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-116. Approval of resolution authorizing submission of waiver request, Dr. Brown. Yeah, I'm recommending the board approve the resolution that's authoring us authorizing us to submit a waiver request to the state. The proposed waiver would allow MCS to repurpose five student instructional days as professional development days for staff in order to
070support district instructional priorities and student needs for the 26-27 school year. Asking for approval. Can I get a motion? I'll make a motion to approve 26-116. Can I get a second? I second. Any discussion? Signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. 26-117. Approval of contract renewal for Okay. Wide area Yeah. Yeah. Wide area network WAN services with SCI data, Dr. Brown. I'm glad I don't have to say that. >> Yeah, I'm glad you don't [clears throat] either. >> [laughter] >> I recommend the board approve the contract renewal for the wide area network services with SCI data to provide a one Okay. JBPS connection between the high school and Deputy Elementary School. This renewal is slated for the E-rate fiscal year 2026. It secures a 36-month term at a significantly reduced rate. By transitioning from
071our current monthly rate of 2,206 2,266 dollars to the new quoted rate of 1,850 dollars our annual total amount, the district will realize a monthly savings of 416 dollars and 99 cents totaling 4,992 dollars annually and 14,976 dollars over the life of the three-year contract. Asking for approval. Can I get a motion? I make a motion we approve 26-117 based on what Dr. Brown gave us. >> [laughter] >> And a second. I'll second. Somehow for discussion I missed that when I reviewed how to properly say that. So, sorry about that. Okay, so signified by saying I. I. Any opposed? Passed. Uh we'll move on to reports. So, we'll start Yeah. Yeah. So, Miss Savannah Hall. Hi. Um there's a lot this month just because of all the, you know, pushbacks and stuff, but it's been
072just a phenomenal month for the students especially. Um so, to start off um congratulations to Juliana Davis for the all-time leading scorer setting the record at or 1,712 points for the season which is insane. She's phenomenal. Um and then also Juliana Davis and Miley McQuary were both named um IndyStar players of the week. Miley McQuary also had a triple-double against 4A East Central when they played them. And then congratulations to the girls basketball team for a fantastic season and for making it to sectional finals um unfortunately falling to Silver Creek. Um >> [clears throat] >> and then congratulations to the girls wrestling team, especially Maya Bullock and Maylie Skinner for a great state performance. Maylie Skinner became the girls the Madison [clears throat] girls wrestling first four state qualifier. She also became our second third
073state play or our second three-time state placer with 101 career goals or career wins. Maylie was also a three-time sectional and two-time regional champion. Congratulations to the boys wrestling team with a great regional this past weekend and then advancing to semi-state this weekend. I believe they're leaving Friday. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah, so congratulations to them and wish them good luck. The qualifiers are Drew Zaxwords. Okay. Close enough. >> [laughter] >> Seeger Rylston, Zane Skinner, Brendan Bence, and Garrett Ducer. Congratulations to the sectionals for the girls swim team. Um all sectional championships do qualify to state, so I believe they got eight of them possibly. And those students are Lily Detillo, Taylie or yeah, Taylie Johnson Ava Canada, Lily Canada um Alejandra Shooty and I believe that's them and they got a huge amount of school records
074for that um sectional. So, congratulations to all of those achievements. Um a good job to the corn the unified cornhole team for becoming the first ever first place team in the state of Indiana. This was their first year. This I believe was the first year of doing unified cornhole and they did a great job in representing Madison. >> [snorts] >> Moving on to ISMA. Um there were the saxophone quartet and clarinet soloists um represented Madison and are moving on to state on February 28th. And then congratulations to the choir ISMA students, Claire Miller, Chelsea Detillo, Susanna Bailey, and Gabrielle Vest. They all placed gold and they're moving on to state as well. Um a couple of upcoming events is the homecoming game tomorrow, so wish the homecoming court good luck. And then there's two shows
075coming up. There's Finding Nemo Jr. next weekend and then a couple weeks after is going to be Frozen March 6th to the 8th. Um good luck to the Farm Stop people that are going to head to Indy tomorrow to hopefully win some awards. We have the program itself nominated for award and then John Shooty, the program leader, also nominated. So, those are some upcoming [snorts] events and then, you know, thank you to the junior high people for showing up just cuz being in junior high like four years ago, it's insane to see the growth that the junior high has made. So, I love that. And then welcome to the new coaches and staff. Thank you, Savannah. Mike. >> can all just sit back and relax. >> sorry. Yeah, I know. >> [laughter] >> You did
076a great job. Um thank you for the junior high staff. I always enjoy getting updates from each one of the schools. Um our girls wrestling program and particularly the two gals that we recognized tonight when you think of what they accomplished um on the wrestling mats, um that's impressive enough, but then you throw the GPA into it and it just knocks it out of the park. Um and I'm always proud um to to recognize true student-athletes with the student being the first part of that. Winter weather. Um kudos to Dr. Brown and our staff. Um it was pretty easy to call the the the cancellation of school for the big storm. I mean, it happened over the weekend, so we got buried and it was was pretty simple. But I think a A bigger and
077more important call was when we were supposed to get the storm last week and it didn't happen until the afternoon and I can't imagine what it would have been like for uh bus drivers and employees trying to get back home. And while some people may not agree with some of the decisions we make, um I applaud Dr. Brown and her staff for always making student and employee safety priority one. Okay. I'm done. All right. Um I want to thank and the junior high staff, Jordan, Brandon, and David. Um you know, we always love to hear about what's going on. Um I love your enthusiasm. I love the stuff that you're doing, not um just the you know, the improvement of the data's and and that type of thing because that's always, you know, our our
078number one priority, but I love the things you're doing to to make it fun for the kids and making them want to be there cuz I think that's um a big thing, you know, if they're wanting to come to school and wanting to be there, then, you know, some of the other stuff is going to fall in place. So, kudos to you for that and and letting them have a good time. Um I really appreciate that. Um and welcome to the new employees. Um great to have you guys back back, Patrick, and and our new ones. Um Mr. Bradley and Mr. Hall. So, welcome and all the other people that we approved tonight also. Thank you, Jared. That's it? All right. Um at this point we start like beating the drum over and over, but
079uh on the topic of the girls wrestling, just you know, congrat- obviously Maili, Maila Maili and Maya awesome, but you know, Coach Johnson's created a culture there uh and the expectations. I'm going to choke up like I always do. He's set for his girls, you know, it's just phenomenal, you know, to see Sam's growth as a Madison alumni through the program and now giving back like, you know, he's been the torchbearer for the girls wrestling in the community and he's producing phenomenal girls like like everybody said, athletes and student athletes. So, congrats to Coach Johnson. And then same thing with like girls basketball, when we talk about out in the community when I'm talking to sports circles, everybody talks about Adam Dennis and the culture he's creating. We're just creating lots of positive interactions in
080our sports through our coaches. Just a dynamic coaching staff that we currently have. Um girls swimming, the obstacles they've had to overcome this year with not having a pool and still setting school records and winning sectional championships. Again, cultures are being created in all of our sports. I think that you're going to continue seeing like that rise, which leads me to I'm going to go on a ramble tonight, sorry. Uh yesterday I was at the state house meeting with representatives and senators. Today I was out at a community meeting with business leaders and vouchers and stuff are not going to go away and it's our job as a district to sell our district and to push what we have in the junior high, what you guys laid out there tonight, the music program, what you
081do for our students. All that is just phenomenal and that's what we need to be hanging from instead of like running our head into the walls wishing those things would go away, they're not. So, we have to get out there and be the be in the forefront pushing our programs, what we offer. Junior high is a key time in terms of getting a student into a school system. It's hard to move in high school. You don't want to move in high school. So, great job with what you guys are doing. I kind of roundabout into that. Just it was super cool to hear what you guys were saying tonight. We really appreciate it. Keep doing what you're doing innovative-wise at the junior high and then selling things like our farm stop. I was at the
082farm stop last week. Savannah and her people fixed me a lunch and it was phenomenal and we have to just keep pushing those things. So, culture, engagement, recruitment. Just as a district, we need to keep doing that. So, that's all I got. Thank you. We're going to have to change the order, though. By the time it [laughter] By the time it gets down here, we're sort of out of stuff and everything. So, great job again on the junior high presentation. Um like I said earlier, you could feel it. You know, it's not just coming out of your mouths. You could actually feel what's going on at the junior high. So, we really do appreciate that. Savannah, you're doing a great job. >> [laughter] >> Keep it up. I'm seeing you all over the place. You're
083very active. You do a great job saying what all is going on. So, very proud of you. So, keep that up. So, um going to kind of short just a little bit. So, the next work session will be Wednesday, March 5th, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. The next regular board meeting will be Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Brown. First of all, I'd like to start off with um a big thank you to our junior high. I appreciate the leadership uh the three of you bring on a daily basis. Also, um you have with you um one of your teachers who's also our association president and a counselor. And I know that I was watching them while you were speaking and they're very proud of you and what's going on at the junior high
