001food after noon fort river friends bienvenidos amigos de fort river viennese day february it brings me joy to know that we are connected again together as a community we're here today to celebrate the love there's so much love to celebrate before we dig in i also wanted to celebrate the lunar new year happy new year to everybody that celebrates everybody should take this opportunity to celebrate a new beginning this year lunar new year rings in the year of the ox and fun fact more than 20 percent of our world's population celebrates the lunar new year it's a time to honor friendship to honor new beginnings dig in celebrate that lunar new year i'm wearing red in honor of the lunar new year and read in honor of the love we also get to take a
002moment in february to celebrate black history we all know that black history is all of our history but we know that it hasn't always been recognized the way that it should so february is the time where we elevate those voices and make sure we celebrate all that there is to celebrate we should celebrate it every day so one of the ways we can choose love is by talking about historic racism current racism and celebrate what race really is so in talking about race is choosing love it acknowledges also that we have a lot of work to do to ensure that all people are treated fairly and have the same rights but the civil rights movement was all about and what the black lives matter movement is all about today so to kick off our celebration
003of love i wanted to share a poem by the inaugural national poet laureate amanda gorman she wrote a poem called talking gets us there it's normal to notice what makes us different because what makes us different is what makes each of us so special there's beauty in every type of face and in every type of freckle from the curl of your hair to the color of your skin no one is exactly the same not even twins but across time and place people have been treated unfairly just because of their race so heroes get into good trouble they have to struggle for a long while but when they win it's worth every mile people of color still experience racism today so it's up to all of us to say enough is enough to speak out with
004all our hearts and that starts at home starts with asking questions about race when we're taught about it together i know we can tackle racism but first we have to talk about it so honor the movement and help our world get to a better place for everyone talking about race asking questions about racism making space for people of color and choosing love for us all so at fort river we started using the term we choose love back in 2016. we started to do it because it was a troublesome time then still a trouble sometimes happening now and we used it to ground our community and connect and make sure we were taking care of one another we wanted to secure ourselves as a place that we allowed growing together and shared a sense of commitment
