done [Music] at uh this is our program we decided to kind of take on a big project this year uh we did some work with ceiling tiles hopefully they're going to go up around the school most of them will probably end up in the gym lobby over the summer they're supposed to change the titles out the ceiling that you go by two tops and two by two tiles we thought that was an ideal time to get back into something it's going to put earthworm up permanently around the school obviously in the visual arts i give students a lot of hands-on experiences i don't um just talk about early on you know i continue to try to give kids as many different experiences as possible we have some really great talent out there and a lot
of really nice students to work [Music] so we're really excited about music here at maplewood we have a lot of things going on junior high court senior high courts are both working on some songs and movement for our spring concert we have the junior high general music class playing guitars and having a lot of fun there so we're always trying to make music and make some opportunities for the kids we work with hands-on projects to build student skills in operating machinery cad drawing building a battlebots seventh and eighth grade students have experiences building stuff with simple machines and focus on just building skills operating equipment drawing products and then producing them incorporate some cnc router cnc laser engraver that kind of stuff into some of our projects and work with a variety of different materials
woods a little bit of metal i've introduced alumalite casting products this year to some of the classes basically we just keep moving forward getting more and more experiences in manufacturing multimedia is a course that maybe that has been expanding in the last few years due to cova demanded increase for live broadcasting and we get the tools in mhs to make this happen we switched gears in 2020 from pre-recording our newscast to going live every morning at the start of the school day we currently use two anchors and a sports caster every morning along with a handful of production sound and lighting crew to provide our students daily information on what's going on in mhs we also dabble in short film talk shows game shows and our class even won first place in the crawford county
suicide prevention video contest in 2021 in the same year we started a media club to teach students how to produce live sporting events here at people teachers and students work together to provide multi-camera live streams to our community our multimedia students will leave mhs with a great understanding of brush testing digital graphics and production [Music] journalism is a class an elective class here at maplewood consisting of 9th through 12th graders and we do some news reporting each week and we put our news articles on our website called [Music] woodshedword.weekly.com we also worked along with mr izard's media club and we help with the morning announcement we also are in charge of collecting all of the articles from our titusville newspaper maple newspaper we try to shine our spotlights here at maplewood in the hallways upfront
on our mhs news board here we have about 16 staff members who all write about a variety of different topics ranging from college readiness to nutritional facts to politics to community events and we are always looking for new topics and ideas introverted foods is kicking up our culinary skills where we start to do more difficult cooking recipes we also have competitions such as our cook-offs the chili cook-off pizza cook-off and then eventually we end with cupcake wars throughout the year we also do community labs where we cook for all the faculty teachers bus drivers and we also do make and shares where every kitchen will come up with a recipe and then we try out everybody's recipe during that class period my favorite part of intermittent foods is the creativity and more they can kind
of make it a more individual recipe where my other classes we all follow the same one this one allows for a little more creativity and freedom our band has a lot of successes and i'm really proud of the program um we have some really hard working kids our marching band has done fantastic and also we have a lot of individual students that have worked really really hard and had a lot of successes in local and regional and state festivals um we do have some challenges in time in the concert band that's grade 7 through 12 and not everybody's meeting my expectations or are not necessarily putting doing their part and so we're trying to work through that so that we can have a successful um concert together and learn everybody learning how to communicate and
participate band is kind of like a team sport we're all in it together one of the things that we pride ourselves here at maplewood is giving students the opportunity at some point grades 9 through 12 to attend a riparian zone restoration project a riparian buffer zone is an area of vegetation that grows along the waterway that could include trees shrubs and smaller plants like grasses and wild flowers and those those types of vegetation when we get to a riparian zone restoration project students put themselves into teams and they can do a variety of jobs they can plant trees they can install the live states which grow into shrubs and it gives them an opportunity to give back where for certain students sometimes it's hard to find that opportunity to maybe give back or promote some
of the things that they would like to share with the community so here at make wood high school we're a big believer in riparian zone restoration projects we believe in it from an environmental standpoint but we really believe in it for what it provides for our students [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] we get bigger turnout of the student body to participate in the fall winter and spring season sports athletics and a lot of the kids play the more than one sport it's highly encouraged to play more than one support and we try to take life lessons that apply to life after high school through the game that they're playing we've had a lot of success in our volvo programs both the girls and boys have won multiple state championships football retail here a couple
years back from 2019 uh the basketball team got the and put it our gold basketball program has gone to the district 10 finals two years in a row we sent many wrestlers to state championships as well [Music] this is another chance to grow and bubble as a person as well as by the sport itself [Music] here [Applause] we hope you enjoyed your virtual visit of maplewood high school we are very proud of our student body and what they have accomplished during their time here thank you for visiting [Music] thanks uh and mr mulford uh putting that together i'll make sure i put on the website uh board have any questions follow for uh principal wolfhard or comments i know we've gone out to maple in the past mapwoods um provided the best food [Music] you

davis yes mr d francesco yes mr johnston yes mr lynch yes mr goleski yes yes yes thank you personnel report i'd like to run a consent agenda items a b c d e f g and h uh as listed and as discussed second motion in a second any discussion if not all in favor of the emotions any objections no objections emotional approval new business policy approval recommended approval of following policies uh zero zero six meetings 119 current events and controversial issues 916 school volunteers do i have a motion behind the committee i make that recommendation some move for a second we hear about motion in the second discussion i had a couple questions um this is a current events policy does it apply to other classes or just current events i believe it's a general
district policy it covers the subject matter current events and controversial issues wherever they would be okay so i just didn't know what was applied to history and english and others just was a current event discussion or if it was for history as well so it's not just carnival it's a subject matter current events controversial that would be current things and i i did a little digging on this after the uh information that was brought to the board on monday the point being that other districts were not implementing similar type of policies and after reviewing some of the other districts policies they may not have one specific policy but most of the things that we're covering in this policy most districts are covering over multiple policies so we were brought a copy of policies that did
not contain some of this verbiage matter of fact some local local districts have frankly stricter policies so that argument is simply not true any further discussions i think that uh i think this this policy is it's micromanaging um it restricts us on what the definition of a divisive issue is and what a current event is it doesn't specifically address crt which is the point of it um you know our current policy it aligns with most policies statewide it says that you know we don't indoctrinate people here you know and more policy is not the answer it makes us feel good as a board like we're doing something but it doesn't change what's happening unless we focus on hiring and retaining good teachers and administrators and we just give them the time and tools to do
the jobs that we're paying them to do the new policy restricts divisive concepts definition to only concerning racism and sexism so other subjects aren't subject to this policy i think the more broad policy that we currently have in place that specifically says indoctrination is a process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically gives us the ability to adapt to actual current events and to other controversial issues better by having more broad policy rather than a micromanagement i just think this is a bad policy to make us feel good and doesn't really accomplish things in response to this being micromanaging line five says that nothing in this policy shall prohibit the introduction discussion or proper education use of a documented historical fact we are not preventing the teachers from talking
about anything what we are preventing is the teachers taking something that is currently going on and presenting it as fact that's all we're preventing we're not asking them to not talk about decisive things or you know we're not asking them to not talk about current events all we are saying is that they cannot present a controversial topic as fact because that would be their opinion that's all we're asking we're not suggesting that they cannot talk about these things we're not suggesting that this cannot be a classroom discussion we are simply suggesting that the teacher cannot present a controversial topic as fact that is all we are doing and i think that was covered in the old policy as well um you know i know that we all received the email a week ago where the
teachers had specific questions on how they're going to teach classes based on this policy i don't know if we've provided answers to those questions or not well you know i read over that i read over again last night or i'm sorry this morning the whole thing they keep bringing up eight and on number eight it says the united states government and society are founded on racist or sexist principles and i a few of us here took a note to defend the constitution in different ways but i feel like i have to defend the constitution again even though there's not terrorists or anything like that but why is it when a few people want to teach about the constitution they have to start right out with they were racist in the 1700s they weren't racist that
was culture and actually the people who wrote the constitution were probably in today's society considered liberals because they went against the king in the countries they come from and they wanted to fight or fought for the and wanted to start a country where they had freedoms freedom of religion freedom of speech great right to bear all that stuff but those questions that were sent to us i read over them and they discussed me in the fact that we have to start raid out but well we had slavery yes we did but we also fought in war several thousand people died and we abolished labor women were there was sense of society women couldn't vote what did we do women marched they made a statement we changed the laws they can vote well i'm not worried
about what got out of the government but i'm just saying we have evolved as a society to where we were to where we are the constitution was written the way it was written in that day we can't compare 2022 to 1776 and it seems like we have people in society that continually want to do that number eight does not prohibit anybody from teaching about slavery it doesn't prohibit anybody teaching about sexism it doesn't prohibit anybody from teaching the facts that happen throughout history as long as they're teaching facts i have no problem when people interject their opinions then i have a problem that's what this is supposed to do and i will say i'm embarrassed it took us eight months to and it still isn't what i want but we have things we got to
move on we have way bigger issues in education period to work on than this policy at this point so i'm ready to move on if we can't write a good policy by now so i'm done i'm ready to take the vote personally let's [Music] i just answer the questions teach it and teach the facts what is so hard about teaching the facts well i think we cover everything thank you uh i think that you know they asked specific questions here in the classroom they did and if our policy is creating these questions on what we're going to be teaching if we can't answer them specifically we're creating an issue it's not teach the facts the facts that are in the history book teach them so talk about them have different ideas have different opinions could
we have done this because we have done that that's how you teach i don't understand what's so hard about it it does not stop you anymore so we did we shared that with the board because we were you know it was asked to do so so all right please know that administration has gone around to the high school faculty and has specifically listened some of their concerns regarding policy 119 and and provided some guidance to them so we have one more high school to do and then we would all three uh in the last two weeks so okay well i was going to save this at the end of the meeting but i guess i have to read it now i firmly believe that the explanation and explanation is necessary this is to prove your
point uh mr brown in regard to the false accusation and narrative that the united states is basically a racist a racist nation history dispels the notion of racism by america as a whole completely as the timeline the timeline of our history will show let's start with year 1619 america that year did not exist it could be true that 1619 was the year celebs were brought to the new continent but there is no question that the british controlled this area at the time there was no united states of america at that time nicole hannah jones writer from the new york times was wrong in in aiming to refrain the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery at the very center of the united states on april 19 1775 the rebellion against the british began leading
to the beginning of a new nation on july 4th 1776 with the creation of declaration of independence 1789 is the year when when today's constitution was enacted given future generation a republic governed by the people the origin of this is important to keep in mind the original federal constitution neither contained an article nor a right to legalize slavery or to own slavery the united states constitution never had that in the constitution in other words the united states of america actually james madison introduced the ninth amendment on december 15 1791 i formerly believe that medicine tend to was to have the nine momentum was to give to all persons the enumerated rights contained in the bill of rights in crude slaves that some southern states had legalized the idea the original united states respond on celebrity
is entirely wrong historically it's also wrong to accuse the entire american population of big fundamental races individuals such as benjamin franklin alexander hamilton and john jay and james madison where against slavery from the beginning and james madison actually wrote a plan in 1825 for the actual abolition of slavery the move to above to abolish slavery by individuals grew most noticeable was the john brown group john brown is well made as many other americans helped to smash through what is known as the underground railroad brown added in the passing over this estimated 2500 slaves from richmond township that's what township pennsylvania all the way to canada in wisconsin on march 20 1854 is generally remembered as the founding defending of the republican party the purpose of this new party was to oppose the spread of slavery
into the western territories by 1860 the majority of the southern slave states were publicly threatening sensation if the republican won the presidency in november 1860 republican abraham lincoln was elected president six weeks later south carolina formally seceded from the union within six more weeks five other southern states had followed the south carolina league lead then the new party was given the opportunity to finally end slavery when april 1861 the confederate shore batteries opened fire on fort sumter in south carolina charleston harbor after the end of civil war the republicans led congress added to the bill of rights amendment 13 and 14. republicans in congress also passed legislation protecting the rights of blacks including civil rights and voting rights also the united states congress and state legislators approved the 19th amendment which became part of the
united states constitution on august 1920. given the right to vote to women the point that i'm making is that despite the problem of the nation we started with some southern states the federal congress and the executive intervening to make sure the requirement of the federal constitution was adhered to therefore the the theory that is going around today to try to should be disgusted discussed by our students as a current events to determine if this theory has in validity or over is actually a political manifesto and this will be a good training number one that our students hopefully will learn the history of the united states as it happened not as some people think they happen and that's very important and then they can discuss it what's going on right now is a current event and
let them determine what they believe that was going on yeah this policy all right and before the discussion we can go to a rule called to vote yep i just wanted to say and this this policy embraces freedom is what it does it does not take away a teacher's freedoms it protects these kids so that they can form an opinion based off facts not off opinions when we allow a teacher to just throw opinions in there on whatever they want then they're not getting the facts they the teacher is there to facilitate and to teach kids to think critically on the facts of history and that's what this is designed to do to protect that the reason it wasn't specifically the critical race theory is because there's multiple things going on right now you've got
critical race theory you've got systemic racism and you have intersexual racism and if you look into intersectional racism it is beyond disgusting it is literally a page out of the book of white supremacy and it is disgusting so we left it broad to cover a lot of different topics okay that's about roll call clips mr brooks no mr brown yes ms crawl yes miss davis yes mr d francesco yes mr johnston yes mr lynch yes mr volesky yes mr vogue yes here we go one motion-approved announcements the board met in executive session on march 7-10 for personal personnel negotiations and public litigation there are no registered speakers comments on non-agenda items are there any comments from the floor you've got two minutes if anyone has any comments pretending what we discuss or anything you have
too many you're not just an off off the cuff upstairs appreciate your name my name is dan you from cambridge springs thank you and uh first of all i'd just like to thank you as board for uh considering the inputs that have come from the community in regards to this issue then it has been a long time coming and and i know that there are other things of value for you to be considering in your position so it's it's it's much appreciated by the community as you well know there was petitions with in excess of 300 signatures requesting this there were town hall meetings there was signage placed across the community appealing to you for you to make this decision so i thank you from the bottom of my heart and from the community in
addition as uh mr defrancesco read from from his uh statement here you know what burned in my heart was that i hoped and i prayed that such things that luigi read were easily found in our sixth to eighth grade textbooks because because what you read was so basic and and and and so uh truly historic that none of our students should be uninformed as to those obvious uh aspects of american history and so it's with great honor as an american as a citizen of pen crest and as a patriot to thank you once again for implementing this policy thank you thank you anybody else all right i'm sorry i mean address for the record uh garth and it's uh cemetery road and i would just like to again say what dan said and just thank
you all for for your vote and i think that the district's population will be very thankful so it's a courtesy to our students what he did thank you thank you for running marks okay board members remarks i'm just going to keep mine short and sweet tonight uh student rep logan i wish you this day but he did a fantastic job because a little nervous we haven't seen that in a while hopefully we can start seeing more students come in and give us updates like that it's really something i look forward to personally uh business week next week on at shs i hope everything goes well i wish everybody the best of luck i think it's awesome that the kids get to experience that i got to start taking one maplewood a few years ago had
a wonderful time i mean it's really awesome the board members get to attend uh trying to make that happen uh justin hayes on the golden apple it's always great to see a pen crest teacher receiving that they all deserve it but it's nice to see it happen and thanks again for the presentation uh we need to see the building from the drilling footage that's you don't realize how massive these buildings are until you see that it's pretty cool and the kids doing the work with the planting trees and stuff that's really nice to see like that uh i guess the others just know so yeah and uh i want to wish everybody uh the best of luck in the next couple weeks all the past the passports the student passports are going was that next
week too uh uh 26th the 26th saturday doing that another phenomenal thing to get the kids involved in the community so best of luck to everybody on that and that's all i have yeah i wanted to thank maplewood also i thought it was very good presentation it's interesting to see what you guys are doing out there and uh keeping all of us updated and he's a good um well put together looking pretty good interesting with the kids doing the uh live broadcast broadcasting was that just mornings and stuff they do mornings they do some different things they do some skits they actually just got done filming their own short films so about five minute videos that they put together they write the scripts for this guy's giving us life skills and on like on hand
so they can try different careers out now to see what might spark their interest so i'm glad to see you know what you're doing out there that's pretty much all i really have to say real quick jeff i forgot to say happy to see you paddy's day too okay yeah fourth year that takes away from my time i don't i was strategically placed that was nice um thank you to everyone all of our retirees up here i wanted to see especially i'm john workmeister yes when um when i went back to school after i got laid off at u.s and um he was the first person i did student teaching under it was it was my experience in the classroom everybody really showed me you know the love of kids and how he got kid
involved in history and his work with national history day is something that we've been bragging about on this board for a long time he's a very punny individual he'll appreciate that if he hears about that um i've never heard anyone make more bad dad jokes and puns than john workmeister but um you know good luck in retirement i wish the best for him logan i got a text today from my son that said you had better be nice to logan he's very nervous and he's practiced reading his presentation five times so i'm glad that we all behaved ourselves i guess apparently we're very mean to student people that read here usually but my my youngest son was you know threatening me if i weren't nice to him so i'm glad that i'm not going to
get beat up when i get home um you know he's only the second freshman ever to speak in front of the board from secretary press so um now i know that previously we had representatives from all the schools i'd like to see if we try to get back to that get update from everybody again as as we come back out of covid i didn't mean to say that then i know i know you know i'm glad you know my pet peeve oh i just want more kids start showing up again you know speaking of which we should have more kids at our meetings coming up um maplewood cambridge boys and girls basketball teams they're making homemade playoff runs we've got six local wrestlers wrestling this weekend right now one from cambridge was eliminated one from
saggertown was eliminated we've got three from secret towns still in the championship round and one in the uh consolation round so good luck to all of them i've not checked to see how anyone's doing which i think is good restraint on my part as a board member i'm glad to see this policy debate come to an end i hope this is the end of it that we don't keep bringing up changes we want to make and keep tweaking it that this is this has been nine months and this is the baby that we that was born so we're gonna have to live with it um during this time personally i'd just like to say that people have misrepresented my staff people have lied about me and they've called me a socialist they questioned my love
of my country and my dedication to my country i believe that one of the things that i enjoy about serving on the school board and the way that we should act is that we can disagree on things without it being name-calling and lying about other people and that's the really the biggest disappoint of all this um the crt policy i'm glad that there's something in place that will satisfy people um i i don't believe this is the end of it but i hope it's the end of it and i'm glad that we're moving on we can focus on what we're supposed to be here for which isn't the school board it's it's the community and what's happening in the classrooms and what i've said all along is it's not really policy that matters it's how
we implement the policy that we hire good people we make sure that they do their job and the resources to do their job and i hope that we do going forward thank you i cut 15 seconds off saint patrick's remark i just would like to thank the representatives from the panther press um good job logan who really conceded he was nervous but i thought he represented himself very well um and thank you mr wolfhard for your presentation from maplewood it was interesting to see the growth i mean all the subjects were interesting to me but the media and the the way the kids are have come in the last couple years [Music] from the videos that we used to watch a couple years back it's it's pretty impressive um and i just want to thank
mr newman and the staff that worked with him um giving this new math curriculum figured out for us i think that it's long overdue and i'm looking forward to the progress it's going to be neat now for my friends just and i just want to mention too we didn't really talk about it tonight but over the last couple weeks there's been a conversation about the program coming up to address learning loss in the district and i'm just i'm looking forward to seeing that i appreciate the time and the energy that's going into that for students that are struggling due to that credit we're not supposed to say but you know i think it's important that the district has addressed that there's kids falling behind there's kids struggling and to meet those needs and to help
group those gaps i'm just grateful for that and the energy that being put there we always have to address the bumps in the road there's always going to be things that we have to deal with that are negative but i'm i'm really proud of headrests in the process and looking forward to seeing them thank you i'm mad it's nice to not go last um like most of my colleagues here i'd like to thank the representative from the press i i enjoy hearing from the kids i love seeing the presentations thoroughly impressed all the presentations that have been brought before us are just just absolutely impressive to think that those came out of a high school it's just very cool to see it's nice to know what's going on i don't get out to maplewood i
