001I know. I was telling you for a couple years. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome in to the second annual Battle of the Badges here at the Hopkin High School Athletic Center. Tom Nappy alongside Brian and I don't want to get your last name wrong, so say your name for me. >> Brian Sci like that. >> All right. Well, it's uh glad you're here uh with us, Brian. Uh broadcast this great event. It's raising money for the Michael Liznau Respit Center, a great cause, and I believe it's also going towards a marathon runner. And uh they're moments away from getting started here. There is uh like 16 different uh police and fire departments here today. Uh Hopkin has a couple police and fire teams. Ashlin's in there. You got Milford and uh many other

002great local departments. It should be a lot of fun here today. >> Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. As you mentioned, Hington has two both police and fire. We got Franklin representing at least two fire teams. NATIC has two police teams. So, 18 teams in total. Um pretty sellout crowd over here. Just driving in around 9:25, 9:30, 30 minutes before kickoff. It was tough to get a parking spot. So, which is a great sign for a great fun. >> A lot out there for sure. Yeah. >> Yeah. So, there's a good amount of uh people in attendance. The stands are just about nearly filled, I would say. And uh if you're in town, feel free to come on down. It's open to the public. They got some great raffles going on as well. I see

003uh I think it's a Larrett Blunt jersey over there. So, that's a old school uh Patriots raffle item. And uh they got many other great things they're raffling off all to raise money for a great cause. And uh you know, last year was a very fun tournament. a lot of close matches and it should be a lot of fun here today. And right now that's the uh Ashlin PD I believe uh giving a nice wave to John who's down on the floor. And right now let's set it down to the floor for the opening announcements. Thank you. >> All right, folks. So, I'd like to welcome you all and thank you very much for coming to the second annual Battle of the Badges Dodge tournament to support the Michael Residence Center here in Compton, Massachusetts.

004So, why don't you give everybody give yourselves a nice round of applause for coming in out here on a Sunday morning. Thank you all very much for coming out and supporting your local departments as well, too. Well, first I'd like to introduce the directors of the Michael Lisnau Resman Center, Sharon Lisnau and Mary McQueen. >> Well, hi everyone. Welcome to our second annual Battle of the Badges. We are so thrilled to see all of you. We have 16 teams competing tonight for today and all for a wonderful cause. The respit center named after my son Michael has opened in Hopington for 28 years and the the the support we have especially from our personal towns first responders is absolutely amazing. They are there whenever we need them and there are times we really need them.

005Um we have we take care of of fragile children with disabilities and adults with disabilities. We have such respect for the work you all do and we are so grateful that you all have come out to support us. What your participation in this does today is every dime we raise today goes to pay for services for people who cannot afford them. In our daycare center, the birth to three program, families cannot afford the care that they need. And because of events like this, especially events like this, we can accept people into the program and not even ask can you afford to pay for it. So, as much as you all want to win today, know that being here makes the most tremendous difference you can make to so many families. So, we thank you from

006the bottom of our hearts. Everybody, play hard, have so much fun, and thank you. Thank you for participating. Now I Wendy Susa who has been with us for not been with us we've been a team for 28 years and without Wendy this tournament would not be coming on on today um she has done so much but here she is just few words from Wendy thanks >> hey everybody thank you so much for coming out um I know especially our fire and police team speaking um from the life of the police officer. You guys have very little personal time. So, the fact that you guys were able to spend some of that personal time here with us is huge. It means so much. So, thank you. Thank you for putting up with me with all of

007my nagging emails, some of you with any of my nagging phone calls. I truly appreciate it. Um this really was a an act of love putting this together. We started in November. We had Danny Hartwell from Nated Fire. We have Chara Rossi from Ashlin PD. We've got Connor Sales and Johnny Krauss both from Hawkington Fire. We've got Connor O'Brien from the Respit Center. My husband Mario Souza from Ashlin Peavey. Um we've got Allison Mandela um who's an athletic director coming to help us out with the brackets. So this definitely was a labor of love for all of us meeting once a month to put this together to plan on how we can really get you guys out here. Um, and so I really want you guys to play hard for the audience. I want you

008to make a lot of noise. Native PD says that they're going to win again. I don't know if that's the case. What do you guys think? Um, I do want to in I want to call up all of our first responders that have run for us in the past. We've had quite a few people that have run for the marathon for us. So, any first responders that have run the marathon for us, can you please come up here? So, I know, let's see, Steve Sinco, uh, Mario Souza, come on up. We've got Johnny. I don't know, but so these guys have all donated their fundraised for us throughout the years and still donate their time with us because once you meet us, you fall in love with us. And that's um I do want to

009introduce who this event is going for this year for his marathon. Lieutenant Johnny Krauss, who is amazing. Um he's been a friend of mine since the moment I met him. We just that was it. We were friends and I was not letting him go. And sorry Johnny, you're with me forever. Um, but Johnny has done an amazing job heading up uh this tournament and also getting on the phone with all of you guys putting in so much work. And so I know Johnny wanted to say a little something to you guys. >> I didn't want to say anything, but I gave Conor a lot of crap last year speech. So I figured I'd come out. Uh, so you said we've known each other for a few years now. It started actually April 13th, 2019 when

010I worked a detail at the restit uh restit barbecue for all the runners. For those that have been there, you know what I'm talking about. For those that haven't, you smile and cry at the same time. So Connor, thank you for helping me set up. Wendy, thank you for helping me set up. And to all you the teams, the spectators, thank you. This goes a long way for me. Um I guess to do the national anthem. But I just want to say ducks fly together and if you don't win me, you don't win at all. >> So now I will introduce Shannon Jack. She is a former Hington dispatcher as well as a Nashville recording artist. Oh, say can you see what we at The twilight lasting stripes and bright stars through the fight. We

011watch me. And the rock is bursting in through the night. Oh, sing does that star spangle for the land of the free and hope. All right, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce our referees for today, Connor, Noah, and Trevor. Before we start, Connor is going to go over the rules, the official rules. I bet you didn't know Dodge well had official rules, but it does. Here we go. All right, everybody. Just want to thank you all for being here again. Uh, real quick, some of the rules are pretty standard dodgeball rules. As you remember from PE class, uh, objective is to eliminate all opposing players by hitting them with a live ball or catching them. Each team is going to start with six players. Um, if there is a team, both teams has

012seven and you want to field seven, that's fine. One team has six and the other has five. It's up for you guys to decide whether you want to play six on five or one of the teams with six will have to take one off and then play five on five. >> Um, additional players will start on the sidelines court and equipment. Uh, game will be played on this Friday court as we have here. Going to be eight dodge balls for the game. have volunteers on each side trying to keep those balls in play. All players will start on their respective end lines. When the whistle blows to start the game, come retrieve the ball in the middle. You have to go tag up on your end line. From where you can throw a ball, a

013live ball is any ball that you throw and has not yet hit the floor, wall, or ceiling or any other ball. If you get hit by a live ball, you are out. elbow and below. No head shot. Catching. A player catches a live ball thrown by an opponent. The thrower is out and a player from the sidelines comes and joins the play. Blocking. Players can use a ball to block another throw. In the instance where a ball is either deflected or blocked or caught by another teammate saying, "I get hit, but my teammate catches the ball before it hits the floor. I am not out." The person who the ball is out. You can in theory save one of your teammates. >> To win the game when all players on one side are eliminated. >>

014In order to win, a player has to beat the cake. You cannot win with a catch. >> Going to have a 5minut time limit on the game. Last year they went up a lot quicker than that. Additional rules. Players must stay within the boundaries of the court. You might get one warning if you step out. It's going to happen. We may see it. We may not. We're going to do our best. I said to Mario, kind of like when you're driving your car, you stay between your lines on your side. If you go over to the other side, you're going to get a shot. >> Penalties. Players are out. They step out of bounds. kick a ball or stall. We're holding the ball longer than 10 seconds. Again, that's something there's going to be eight

015balls going back and forth. Get the ball, pick it up, throw it. Uh we'll have pool play. So, we have four pools, A, B, C, and D. Little bit of round robin play. Top two seeds from each pool will get entered into the bracket. Bracket closes. It'll be single elimination from there until we get to the championship game, which will be the to right. If you have any questions, concerns, you come and ask me. I'm probably going to tell you that. >> Let's play some dodgeball. >> All right. Now that we've got the official rules out of the way, up first we're going to have the Planeville Baller Club versus Milford Fire. Come on down. All right, there are the rules. Great explanation of the rules and we are ready to get started. And the

016first team's up. It's going to be Planeville Fire against uh my hometown Milford Fire. So, uh this should be a a great match here today. And I believe uh the the Milford Fire team, they went pretty far last year. I want to say they got to the semifinals if I recall correctly. And uh I believe it was NIC who ended up uh winning the first uh ever uh Battle of the Badges dodgeball tournament. >> So was that Nitic Fire or NIC police won the first one? >> I want to say it was Nic Fire. I'm going to >> I'm going to have to verify that, >> but we'll verify it. I want to say it's NIC fire. Let's set it back down to the floor. >> AR fingers. All right, looks like we're going to

017have a change of the matchup as uh one of the teams didn't have enough. >> So, I players >> So, we're going to have uh they're changing up the matchup due to one of the teams not being here yet. So, it looks like it's Ashlin Fire >> in the dark blue. And who do you have in the green over there? >> That is a good question. I'm trying to see the front of the shirts there. >> And it looks like Mend. So, we got uh Ashlin and Mend. And we are ready to get started. >> Interesting. Mend only has five players. So, basic dodgeball rules of six versus six to start it off. Mend only with five. We're in the green. I'm going to give Connor some credit. So, we have three refs, Connor, Noah,

018and Trevor. I didn't realize there were that many rules in in dodgeball, but he had he had a long list over there. My my key takeaway, it's a fiveminute time limit. So, >> the most I know about dodgeball is from the dodgeball movie. >> Of course, I I already wrote down my five keys of uh six keys. Five keys. >> Here we go. We're underway. >> And it looks like uh both teams uh each got a couple of balls there. And here we go. Balls are flying over here. >> Couple misses to start. It looks like uh someone on Ashlin is out or they might have two out. They got >> three out I think actually. >> Wow. So that's a huge start for men and fire. They came in with a disadvantage. One man

019short, but they are up right now. It is five on three. >> Make that threeon three. Now all of a sudden >> just like that in the blink of an eye could change. Actually, it's four on three. Mend has a slight lead over here. >> Oh, big hit there. Now there's two. Ashlin's down to two. >> So, it's three on two right now. >> Oh, there's another elimination. Two on two. Right. >> Balls are flying right now. Start with eight balls. >> Who will take it? Ashlin Fire or will it be Mend Fire? Two on two right now. And don't forget if someone catches the ball that brings a teammate back. I >> was going to say we have not had I don't know if that's officially called the catch. >> Oh, look at that

020trickery. >> Here we go. Look at that. >> He throws a ball up in the air, creates the diversion, and bam. >> You know, you didn't see that in the movie. Maybe the sequel's coming. >> All right. >> OH, THAT'S IT. ASHTON TAKES IT. >> So Ashlin was down early, kept on fighting. Was a two to one advantage. Ashlin wins the first first matchup against Mend. So >> that was a great start for Ashlin. And mend they were hanging in there strong. They came in a man short and things were looking good at first, but then Ashlin turned it right around and was able to get the victory. For everyone, if you didn't hear, it's a double elimination. So, if you are with the mendon team, they still have at least one more match to

021go. Double elimination until we get outside of the pool uh first round over here. So, >> yeah. So, they don't have the bracket uh listed out, but I believe they go to the losers bracket. So, they'll play another team that lost and one of those teams will be eliminated. >> Makes sense. >> Next, we're going to kick it over to the police department. Dodge Squad versus Young Guns. That's Ashlin versus Nic. >> So, we got Ashlin versus Nic. Ashlin Police coming up and they'll take on NIC. And uh I want to send a big thank you to our crew helping us out today. Hey, we got Mike Ter Roan, Dave McCarthy, John Ritz, and they were kind enough to come in on this Sunday morning and help us out. So, we are very grateful to

022have our great crew here today. Tom Nappy, Brian Satt, happy to be with you on the call. And we are into the second matchup. Ashland Police and NIC Police. So, we had a six versus five and now it looks like we have an eight versus eight game going on. Ton of players on this game. The police teams both came out to it with a big group of big group of teams over here. >> I want to say the seven on the Ashlin side. >> Seven. Okay. >> So, let's see. We got three seven on seven right now. >> And we got one elimination on Nic. >> Oh, big hit there. And remember, the head shots do not count. So, if it's a head shot, it will not count. Two out on Ashlin. >> Oh, and

023they're saying that that was a head shot. I thought it hit him in the left shoulder. Oh, that was a head shot. >> He's in. >> I'll tell you, the Nic Police, they got some uh strong arms. >> They do. >> They might They might have some former pitchers on the Nic side. I >> was going to say pitchers, third baseman. Oh, >> there's another elimination. Nic is up big and we have a NIC elimination. So right now it is five on three. >> What a love. I know. And I'm from Ashland. So I see our our Ashlin police chief. She is the the coach right now. So any head shot, she's basically telling telling our team to stay in there. >> Two out. Ashlin's down one. >> The only advice from the movie is

024you got to get angry. >> You got to get mad. He needs to catch one. Oh, it just off his fingers. stands and going to take it. >> Wow. >> So, Asha Police goes to the losers bracket. >> And uh some of the towns we ought to mention do have two uh teams. Franklin Fire has two teams. Hopinson Police and the NICT Police and Hopkins and Fire all have two teams. So, >> just to uh >> hopefully not confuse anyone. Just wanted to >> make the people aware there are two teams for some of these great departments. >> So, Tom, I know you said Nic won last year. Wasn't sure if it's fire or police, but if it is police and that was the defending champs, I think now we know why they're the defending

025champs. They were >> besides having strong arms, they seem to know their their stuff over here. >> They certainly do. >> Did their research. >> All right. So, We have the >> Ash Kickers. >> Okay. >> And NIC Fire. So, it's Ashland and Nic. And I want to say this is an Ashlin Police group. Maybe Mike could confirm for us if this is uh Ashlin police or fire. Or actually, Mike's not here right now, but we'll have confirm. In any case, we know it's Ashlin, that's for sure. >> And I'm not going to say their team name too much because I don't want to say something by accident. >> And I >> Oh, there's an elimination >> leg shot over there. Ashlin down to three. So, a huge advantage for NIC. >> And that was

026the first catch over there. >> They've got six in there. And look at that. Another another catch. So they got their full team in there. Ashlin's in big trouble in this one. >> Oh, some good dodging over here. And she she needs to catch one to try to bring someone back for Ashlin. >> Oh, and that's going to do it. Nicer takes it. >> All right, that was quick. Less than a minute, I think. >> Yeah, it certainly was. I think Nic must have some kind of dodgeball. Um, >> they must have ate their waties this morning. >> Something like that. >> They clearly have have been studying the movie, studying the game. >> Besides having strong arms, they just kind of have a good flow going on right now. >> So, who do we

027got coming over here? It's kind of tough to see. >> This is Whand Fire. We got Wayland Fire and uh looks like Franklin Fire. Yep. Oh, no. All right, they're just walking. Okay, that is their team. So, Wayland Fire and Franklin Fire and we are ready to get the fourth matchup of the day started. >> So, some teams come in here, they coordinate their outfits. Franklin, I think they just really play dodgeball. They got four or five different color shirts going on. >> Well, you know, it creates uh confusion. It's a good thing. >> Totally does. Yeah. You don't know what color shirt you're supposed to throw at. >> Good lead shot over there. >> There's one elimination on Franklin. >> Oh, good defense. >> Oh, look at that. A strong throw from up front,

028but he just misses. Another elimination on the Franklin side. So, let's see. We got four on uh NIC and four on Franklin or four on Wayland rather, excuse me. >> And of course, >> oh, they brought someone from just got knocked out. They brought one back, but in the meantime, someone else got eliminated on Wayland, so it's back to now they're down to three. >> You know, these balls are not very heavy. They're spongy, but they come fast, though. >> They certainly do. >> Oh, big elimination to the upper shoulder. >> So, they're Whan down to two. >> We got a four. >> Look at that. Franklin's just kind of hanging back. back. See, they're staying near that back line and just and that's kind of a smart uh technique because obviously you got more

029time to get out of the way. There's they're down to one on Wayland. >> Franklin uh >> Oh, he's staying alive. >> Franklin trying to take this in dominant fashion, but it AIN'T OVER YET. >> OH, THERE IT IS. >> OH, DOUBLE SHOT. >> OH, BOY. >> We're not going to say where that hit him, but uh >> he's trying to dive out of the way and didn't work out that time. So Franklin Fire going to take it >> and they're going to move right along to the next group. >> You know the basic rules of dodgeball. You got to dodge, dip, dive, duck, and of course dodge. He tried everything over there to stay alive. >> And then of course from the legendary patches of Hulahan. >> Of course I I keep on hearing

030they're making a sequel from that movie. I'm I'm not sure. I I didn't love that the sequel to Happy Gilmore. I'm a big Space Balls guy that's coming out. I think dodgeball 2 could do could do well. We'll have to see. >> Now, I I know from last year this team is very good that's coming out. The Mighty Ducks. >> So, uh be on the lookout for the Mighty Ducks. They had a great run last year. >> And I think uh Johnny Krauss, who's actually running the Boston Marathon, uh is on this team. He had a little uh speech earlier on. Very nice emotional speech. But, you know, we had two teams that didn't have the best uniforms. I think this could be our best uniform. >> Yes. Both of these teams have very nice.

031This is Franklin Fire looks like on the right side. >> Okay, Franklin Fire in red. We got the Mighty Ducks in white and on the left side. >> And we even got names on the back. So >> names, numbers. >> They are for real. They are >> They are serious coming in with the names on the back. They're ready to go. >> We got some of the black eye going on over here. >> And it looks like that straight. There's an elimination on the Franklin side. Two eliminations. >> Oh, we have a catch over there. Someone's coming in. Number 96. That might be the captain up. Maybe he got eliminated. >> Mighty Ducks hanging at full strength. Oh, no. They got two out. Four out on the Franklin side. They're down to actually they're down

032to just two now. >> Actually down to one. One guy >> as I was saying two. So it got eliminated. >> You just That's how fast it goes. >> Yeah. So, they need a catch over here. He's got to do whatever he can to catch a ball. >> Yeah, he's going to hang behind that back line, but it's not going to pan out that time. And the Mighty Ducks take the win. >> Well, Tom, I think you said you've seen this team before. >> Pretty solid. That's a That's a team that, you know, >> I believe Mighty Ducks is actually a Hopkin team. >> I I think you're right. Yep. >> So, the Mighty Ducks of Hopkin advancing on and well, actually, it's a two loss elimination. So, Franklin Fire will still hang around. They'll

033go to the losers bracket >> because ducks stay together or ducks fight together. >> Were you a big Mighty Ducks guy watching the other movies? >> Absolutely. >> Loved all three. I didn't get into the um the the Disney Plus series that they had when they brought Alio Estz back. I didn't see that. >> Well, I know the movies. I don't know the >> movies are great. The first one is >> actually I liked all three of them, >> but the first one was great. It's a classic. >> Well, we'll see who the Bash brothers will be here today. Mhm. >> All right, let's see who we got coming out here. Hopinson's on the left side. This is Hopkinson Police on the left side, I believe. >> Y and again, we have uh it's tough

034to tell. On the right side, we have literally six different shirts. >> Fully loaded is the name of the team of from Hopkin in the black shirts. on the right side. >> We'll have to uh get a confirmation on that one unless you were able to hear the announcement. >> I did not hear it. What I just noticed is one of our head refs, Connor, has a wrench in his hand cuz he knows if you could dodge a wrench, he could dodge anything. >> A couple misses to start. both. Oh, there's an elimination >> on the right side. >> So, I think some of the strategies is keep the ball fast, keep it low so you can't catch it. A lot of sidearm throwing over here. There's an elimination. Elimination. >> Oh, there's elimination. >>

035Here we go. Another one. Three back to back. So if again if it bounces on the floor and hits a person, you're not out. >> That is correct. >> Just so one of our refs just got hit, so hopefully he's okay. >> Well, look at this. The team on the right side coming back. It's twoon two now. And now it's twoon one. >> Twoon one. We need a catch or just a quick elimination. >> This might be one of our longer games. >> Look at this. >> Oh, eliminated. >> Oh, that'll do it. Minor on the left leg over there. >> All right. So, we'll try to get a confirmation on what the team on the right is. They didn't have anything on their shirts that would uh Oh, looks like was that Ash? >>

036Nope. That's right. Oh, that's a >> Fairfield University. Nope, that's not there. That's where he obviously >> I don't think it was Fairfield University. >> No, I don't think it's Fairfield University in Connecticut. In any case, >> we're moving on to the next match. >> Yep. >> You're right. They keep these games going over here. >> Oh, yeah. They move. >> All right. So, we got Deon's Flyer coming out. >> All right. We're waiting for Devon's Fire to uh make their entrance. I'm not sure if they're going to have some music or Quick shout out to our uh Are those unicorns or our our mascots? >> I believe so. Yes. To bring a little luck to uh the teams here today. >> They were doing some pretty cool pregame activities going on. I was impressed.

037They're they're there must be a little bit warm in there, but they're they're doing their job, entertaining the fans, entertaining the refs. >> Absolutely. >> And I just want to say we are honored to cover this event and support uh these great departments, these great local fire and police departments. And this is just such a fun event to be at and to uh have for you here live on HCAM and WACA TV in Ashlin. So we got Devon's fire and I want to say this is Franklin on the right. Okay, >> this is one of the Franklin departments. So this is Franklin Fire on the right. Devon's on the left. >> We had our first actual collision over there. >> I think Franklin has at least two fire teams. >> Oh, look at that. A

038couple of good dodges there. Both teams still at full strength for the moment. >> Oh, there's an elimination on Franklin, I believe. Oh, no. He's still in. >> He's still in. >> So, I think if >> Oh, that's elimination. >> Elimination. Two out on Devon's. So Franklin, they got five left and Deon's four. >> And what we have not seen is a lot of catch and bring your teammate in. We've seen some catches when they're but not a uh Oh. >> Oh, big elimination there. >> So if the ball hits the other person's ball, even if he's holding it, they're not out. So that's as a defense mechanism. >> Oh, that was off a bounce. So he's still in there. So there's still uh they still got four in there. The key to this game

039is making sure no one actually throws throws their arm out. >> Yes. I mean, you're going to be playing multiple matches. Yep. You got You got to save that frame, >> but you don't want to save it too much. >> Exactly. >> Two out on Oh, they're down to one. >> Oh, that was elimination. All right, we have three on one right now. >> Oh, three on two. >> Oh, look at that. >> He's still in >> throw there. Oh, he's got it. >> He's got a gun. I wouldn't want him throwing those balls at me, I'll tell you that. >> No fear over here. All right. >> Miss there. Good dodge. That throw a little high. Twoon one. >> OH, LOOK AT THAT. >> There's some strategy there. Both players coming at the same

040time. And >> it's part of the 5Ds. You might be ducking or diving or dodging, but you got to look out for that other one. >> That's what they call the multi-throw. >> The multi-throw, baby. I just invented that, too. >> I like it. It's We're We're It's trending right now. >> Are you a lefty or a righty, Tom? >> I'm a righty. >> You're a righty as well. Okay. >> I'm left footed, though. >> Are you really? >> I am. >> All right. That's interesting. >> All right. Who do we got here? This is the Mighty Ducks, I believe. >> That's interesting. >> Look at that. Goldberg. >> The goalie. >> I I believe they're using all Mighty Ducks names if I'm not mistaken. >> Goldberg. The goalie. So, it's Mighty Ducks and then

041uh we got a hero. >> That's a first. Did we see green yet? >> We did. I believe we did. Okay. I >> maybe that was the first say >> is it Ashlin? >> No, it wasn't Ashlin. Was that uh was that Ne? >> It might be Mend. >> Was it Mend? Okay. >> Well, I got to confirm here. We're going to try to get a glimpse of the front of the shirts. Actually, the back uh might have it, too. Looks like they all got the same name on the back. So, that's likely the name of the department. We got the We got the music going on over here. Movie the departed. >> Oh, big elimination from the Mighty Ducks. >> He's safe. >> Two out on the right side. It's It is Mend on

042the right side. >> It is Mend. Okay. Ooh, what a shot. >> Mend fire department. >> The down to one. >> Down to one. >> Trying to make quick work out of Mend. >> So to me, if I'm mending, I you just want to try and catch the ball. >> Oo, a miss there. Good dodging. Oh, >> look at this guy. >> Staying in there, standing strong. >> Oh, good catch. >> Oh, on the left. out and the Mighty Ducks take it. >> All right, so I'm going to go on a limb right now. If I'm going to put any fun money on this, the Mighty Ducks have to be the favorite. They're just >> Oh, yeah. >> They're solid. >> I mean, besides having the best uniforms and obviously one of the key folks

043running the marathon in um Johnny Cross, they just are a team that knows this dodgeball game very well. I heard they were up very late last night watching the replay, watching the movie. I mean, versus squad. >> All right, we got the Dodge Squad. They're out of Hopkin, I believe. >> Okay, >> and then we have the National PD. Okay, >> so this is Hopkins International. A little cross town rivalry. So, it was Natic Police that won it last year. I just confirmed it. >> Got it. Okay. >> So, the Native Police trying to defend their title. They've had a strong standing so far and they won their first matchup. They took on Ashlin Police earlier. >> So, I think if Ashland Police here, if they lose this game, they're eliminated. So, this is a

044mustwin for Ashland. And I see their coach. Our uh Ashlin commissioner is out there doing her job right now. >> So here we go. We are underway. Hopkins and Ashlin. >> We have a black shirt >> on the left, Ashlin on the right. >> Black shirt versus black shirt over here. >> Couple uh or one down on. >> Now it's two down again. You could say one thing and two seconds later, right? It's that fast. >> So, it looks like we have Nope. Four in for >> four on three. Now it's four on two. Four on one. >> She's in cuz that was a head shot. That was a head shot, right? >> A head shot ref. >> And so they still got three. Yeah, >> there must have been a catch in the meantime.

045>> Four on three over here. >> Or did they say a head shot brings one back? >> No. No. She She just wasn't eliminated. >> Well, now she is. >> Now she is. Four on two. >> Hopkins trying to hang in there with Ashlin. >> Four on one. >> All right. >> Oh, she's going to need to make a catch. >> Oh, almost caught it. >> Oh, no. >> Actually, maybe laying down might be the good strategy, >> RIGHT? SHE'S DONE. >> OH, SHE CAUGHT ONE. SOMEONE'S IN. >> ONE BACK. Someone should come in right now, right? Yeah. >> Yes. >> Yep. Here we go. I >> think Ashon two. >> Yeah. Ashley got a little bit too relaxed over there. >> Oh, back to threeon one. >> Wow. >> Look at that. She's dodging

046them very well. Just, you know, little moves to the side and getting out of the way there. And we'll see if she could uh catch one and bring someone back. still hang. >> Look at that. Hanging tough. >> She's hanging tough. I love it. >> I'd say she's she's the MVP so far. >> IMPRESSIVE. >> OH, SHE GOT THE OTHER ONE OUT. WE HAVE A TWOON ONE. >> We got to get a name over here. I think her number is Oh, IS SHE OUT? NO, that was a head shot. That's a head shot. >> Oh, it's waved off. >> Oh, no. >> Oh, we hope she's okay. And of course, they're not going for the head shots, but sometimes it's, you know, >> she was ducking. She um that was not intentional, >> but the

047crowd's into this right now. She's not giving up. >> Yeah, they're still in there. >> We got to get >> I believe uh they could substitute if uh >> they wanted to, but she does not want to. >> She does not want to. She's going to stay in there and she's going to try to take the >> So, I think what happened is you could tell it's a head shot. Her glasses broke. It hit her right in the face. So that's what happened. So now she's going in with eye. >> It looks like we are going to get a sub. >> Standing over for number 41. Yeah, definitely. >> That was a great effort. >> Whatever happens, I think if there's a uh MVP award, >> absolutely. >> Or mo MDP, most dodgeable player. >>

048But I think it it hit her glasses and hopefully her left eye is okay. So we have a twoonone Ashlin vers Huffington. This game might go to the time limit right now. >> Two on one. Here we go. >> All right, so we got 26 for Hopping. No numbers on Ashland. >> I feel like the Rocky theme should be playing right. >> I agree. >> OH, AND IT WENT off and he's out. So Ashlin will take it. But a great effort by the dodge squad and tremendous effort by uh number 41 there. And we'll try to get her name. But that was phenomenal how long she was able to >> hang around. And >> I'd have to say of the most competitive match we just witnessed the rival game over there. Again, we're going to

049try and see maybe if we can get number 41 who now is I see her. She does not have her glasses on. >> But what an effort. >> Oh, tremendous. >> Stayed in there. >> She I mean she literally was all the D's, the dodging, the dipping, >> all the fundamentals. Dodge, dip, dive, duck, and dodge. >> So, we got Native Fire and I want to say Whand, but I'll have to confirm that. >> All right, up next, can we please get >> Hold on one second. Milford fired. He did not show up today, correct? So, Aggressive Overhaul will win that match. >> All right. Now, we are now up to Boys in Company versus Franklin Fire G2. T Boys in Company. >> So, Ashlin Fire and Franklin Fire. We have our uh the Franklin

050Fire over here coming in with their red little hockey jersey kind of theme. >> They got they have a big Ash on the left, Franklin on the right. Red versus blue over here. >> Those are very nice jerseys that Franklin has, I must say. >> Definitely going to earn their sweat right now. So they are going to go just six on six even though Franklin has a seventh player. >> Now it's six on six. >> Yep. >> Yeah. So they try to keep it even. >> Yep. >> So far no eliminations yet. Oh, Ashlin just got the first one on Franklin. That's number 21. >> And Ashlin just got one player eliminated. Two players eliminated. Three players eliminated. Five on two right now. Five on one right now. >> Oh, Tony Ri get kicked out

051of that one. >> All right, Ashton has one player left. He needs a catch over here. He >> He's the guy you want. He's the guy you want to save here. Curtis can dance. Ah, >> Curtis is done. >> He almost he just missed it with the ball just a little bit. >> All right. So, that is the Franklin Fire with a quick elimination over Ashlin. >> So, we're looking for a couple fire departments at missing miss and Milford. >> All right. Okay. >> I know NIC has a few teams. So, yeah. Please >> trying to see who the announcement is. We have the pink and that might be another Ashlin team >> coming out. Ash. >> Uh, that is the Is that the Ash Kickers? >> Yes, >> that's the Hopkins. >> Oh, that's

052Hop Fire. Hopping fire. Okay. So, they're totally confusing us with the Ash part. So, that's Hington Fire on the left. >> Yeah. Yeah. You would think Ash would be, but it doesn't happen here in Hopkin like that. You know, the other team is the Seated Hall Ducks. So, >> that's what it is. Okay. >> So, out there, I just know a couple people. I well one I know Lieutenant Bill Krauss out there >> and not we're still not sure who's on the right right now because there's no names on those jerseys >> trying to figure that out. >> Some some teams got spirits. They uh go get their shirts made. >> And here we go. We have now this is a six on five game. >> Yep. >> Nope. Nope. Not elimination. They have to

053be able to get the balls go back. So no elimination. Oh, that's a Oh, two catches over there. >> Two people got >> hurry. >> All right, so we have a five on three over here. That's Hopping Fire. Oh, that's a drop over there. So, Tom, we just found out Ash Fire is actually a Hopping team. >> Ah, >> yeah. Well, so the Ash Kickers >> Ash Kickers is a Hoppingington team. Yes. And they just got eliminated. So, >> you were confusing Tom and I with the Ash. It's not an Ashton. Mike helped us. That's a Hopping team. So, we just got eliminated. >> Well, right now, as we get into the next match, we're going to bring Wendy Souza on air who uh is uh the host of uh this great Battle of the

054Badges dodgeball tournament. >> All right. >> Wendy, how are you? >> I'm wonderful. How are you? Oh, I'm doing tremendous. Uh, so a great tournament going on out there. Uh, always a fun event and, uh, the the many departments you have participating really seem to enjoy it. Uh, first off, tell us what this is all about here today. >> So, this is all um providing um funding for the respit center, the Michael Respit Center in Hopington. And the respit center provides services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. And the Boston Marathon is our absolute biggest fundraiser. And we've had so many first responders that have run the marathon for us. Last year, we decided how fun would it be to see you guys all pelt each other with balls. And there's always the rivalry

055between fire and police. So, we thought this would be just such a fun event. And so, last year was our first year starting it. This year, uh, Lieutenant Johnny Krauss from Hopington Fire wanted to run for us. And so this is going to benefit his Boston Marathon running. And um he's his goal is to get 15,000 this year. Uh which is an amazing goal and it's going to help and provide so many services for children especially in our child program that need this. And um Johnny's been working since November with me on this and planning it and bugging teens. And it's it's really tricky to get these fired and police teams together because they're so busy and they're so all over the place. And I can say this because my husband is a police officer.

056So there's nothing wrong with me saying this. >> Absolutely. Now I understand uh when you first started this tournament last year, you had so many departments calling that it it was kind of mind-blowing. you had uh you had way more uh departments wanting to participate than uh you would have thought. >> Yeah, we were really shocked last year. Same thing this year. We've had um a few other departments that we didn't have last year. Mend fires a new addition, which is phenomenal. Planeville Fire is a new addition. That's phenomenal. Um we've got 16 teams this year, which is great. Um we're hoping next year to double that. We would love to get more especially police teams. Um it's really hard to get police officers because I mean their bread and butter is their overtime and

057their details. So any personal time for them is very sacred. Um so we're really thankful for the groups that have come out but we're hoping next year to get even bigger. >> Absolutely. And uh so how many uh calls did you get this year? I'd imagine obviously you got these uh 16 calls but I'd imagine there was more departments that wanted to participate as well. you know, there were quite a few others. And then um it was a really hard decision because it's on the same day as the St. Patty's Day parade in Boston. So, we're not going to make that mistake next year because they had already committed with their friends going to that. And you know, >> right, >> you know what that means? That's a full day. >> Yeah. >> Well, uh

058it's a great event. Everybody's having a real good time out there and uh you guys do a tremendous job. So, uh, congratulations on another, uh, very successful Godfall tournament. >> Thank you. >> Uh, we'll we'll see. Uh, who who do you think's going to, uh, take the title this year. >> Well, I'm a little biased with Ashlin PD because that's, you know, where my husband works. So, so we'll see. That's what I'm hoping for. >> All right. Well, they're hanging tough, so we shall see. Wendy, thank you so much for talking with us. >> Thank you. >> All right. That's Wendy Suzu Sharon. >> All right. Thank you, >> Wendy Suzu who's uh running this event, this great event, and uh just doing a tremendous job. What a tremendous event this is. And we're certainly

059happy to uh have a little chat with Wendy who did a great job uh planning this whole thing. And uh Brian, I don't know if you heard, but next year there could be 32 teams. >> Really? >> That's right. >> Pretty much double. So >> wouldn't that be something? I mean because they get an overwhelming amount of uh departments wanting to participate and you know as Wendy mentioned uh one thing uh that kind of affected it a little bit is the same day as the St. Patty's Day parade. So that kind of affected it. So uh next year they'll try not to uh overlap uh with the St. Patty's Day parade, but still a great turnout and uh certainly a great event. And we are through another matchup. And was that Milford who just took

060that win? Or we'll try to get a confirmation. >> I think next show I'll have to definitely bring binoculars to get a good view of of the jerseys. >> Wow. So So there's, you know, I mean there might be 18 teams, 16. They double it. That would be incredible. Um, you mentioned last year they we were at the Hopington Middle School. This year we're at the high school. So just size-wise, I can't imagine this being in the middle school. Well, I mean, you know, they they uh did a great job and uh but they got a bigger turnout than they expected. So, >> which is great, >> which is tremendous. I mean, a lot of people just want to come and support these uh great local fire police departments. So, uh they moved it to

061the high school. It's certainly uh worked out spacewise. And >> you know, this event I think it's just going to keep growing. I mean all the departments love it, the people love it and uh it's just uh and it's for a great cause most importantly >> for a great cause and I think the more they it's just the second annual the more they have this bigger crowds more funding and just it's all around awareness >> and and fun too. I mean you know these are competitive games >> but it's for a good cause and um >> but they want to win. Listen, there's a trophy on the line. It's all about talking trash. >> Oh yeah. Yeah, you want the ultimate bragging right. >> You want to win over here >> right now. You got

062the Franklin Mighty Ducks against Mend. >> So, uh, we'll see who's going to take this one. Both teams, uh, hanging strong for now. It's four on three, three left on the Mend side. So, the Mighty Ducks, they uh, they beat Mend earlier. So mend they're trying to hang on to avoid elimination. >> Four on two now. >> You know the good news we have not hit that five minute. Oh if he catches it he's in. >> Oh someone's in now. Someone should be going in on the left side. That was a catch. >> Oh maybe they're not aware. Well if it was a catch off a bounce that doesn't meet count. >> Yeah. >> So it might have been off a bounce. But in any case, doesn't matter because going to take it. >> My

063second favorite jersey over here on the left side. So, >> oh, and our uh unicorn dinosaurs are getting into it. >> The hockey jerseys. >> I mean, it's a it's a little bit Montreal Canadian. >> I was going to say I didn't want to say that. It looked like the Montreal Canadians. >> Now, I'm a Chicago guy sports-wise, so that doesn't bother me, but I know being a Boston Bruins. >> But I still like it, though. >> Yes. That's a beautiful >> beautiful jersey. >> So the Okay, so that's a mixed team. Uh police and fire, the Mighty Ducks. >> So it says uh on the bottom of the logo, it says Franklin on top and then police and fire. >> Okay. All right. >> So it's the Franklin Police and Fire Mighty Ducks. >>

064Interesting. >> And right now we got Ashlin PD coming out. >> And again, >> and it's going to be Milford on the right. >> Oh, Milford. So that's okay. Your eyes are better than mine or your ears are better. All right, so we do have a six on six. >> We have our Ashlin police commissioner over there with the coaching. So Ashlin verse Milford, I want to say this is Milford police. We have a another guest who's going to be joining us. All right. We are with Sharon Liznau. Sharon, how are you? >> I'm good. How are you? >> Very good. Uh so, uh you uh you run the uh Michael Liznau Respit Center. >> I do. uh talk about what the uh can you talk about what the respit center does and some of

065the services they provide? >> Absolutely. >> Oh, >> there we go. We're on camera here in the back. Thank you. >> Sorry, you were watching the game, everybody. >> Yeah, that's right. We're too into the game. We We forgot there's a camera over here, but uh so if you could just uh tell us real about what the respit center does, that'd be great. Well, the Resbit Center is 28 years old and we provide services for children and adults with disabilities. We run a day program. We run an infant toddler daycare center that every dime we raise here today will go towards children coming to that program for no fee. Um, and we have four group homes and we just opened a um greenhouse program in Hollist. So, things are going really well. Really, really well.

066That's excellent. And this is just uh such a great event and uh all the departments love it. Uh and what a great turnout we have here today. >> I know. I just looked down and the stands are full, which is really nice to see. But the really nice part of this is all the first responders who come and they play and they play and they have fun and they challenge each other to say the least. And it's just a really nice event. And every every thing we raise just goes towards our families and that's wonderful. >> Absolutely. And the rest the Michael lives now respit center does great work. Uh and uh I believe uh you have a good amount of events coming up as well and uh opportunities for people to help out with

067the uh Michael now respit center. Can you talk about uh some of the ways that people could help out uh with the respit center? >> Well, we always love volunteers. I mean we we thrive on volunteers. Um, so that's that's a huge part, but just it just seems like since we've been in Hopington, um, the community and people just they come, they somebody gives us firewood all the time, somebody people just are good to us and we're so fortunate and so blessed to be in that position. And when we opened 28 years ago and it's named after my son, Michael, and Michael was born um, 16 weeks premature and weighed just about a pound when he was born. and he was the first person with disabilities I ever really met and knew. And when I

068look back now and I see this and I see all the young people out here who now work for the respit center, when we opened there were three of us. There was Mary, the other director, and a volunteer. And I see there our next generation. And as I'm in my late 60s now, it's kind of nice to see all these young people here who are carrying on the legacy of the respit center, but also the legacy of my son, Michael, and just he was he was a remarkable little boy. He passed when he was 10 years old. Um, and he was actually the first child with his level of disabilities ever in the Dover Shervin school system. And that that I mean it was 30 it was 30 some years ago. He'd be 40 now.

069And it's just really cool to see the growth in everything that's happened over those years. The way all of all of our guys are now in the public schools. It's just really nice. And an event like this shows me how much there is um in support but in just the joy of the respit center. >> Well, you guys do tremendous work. >> Thank you. >> And uh I know uh this event certainly a keeper. Uh >> yes, >> all the departments enjoy it. We enjoy covering it. So, uh, thank you for all the great work you do. >> Thank you for covering it. Thank you. Absolutely. We appreciate you all. >> It's our pleasure. Thank you so much for joining us today. >> Nice to see you. Thank you. >> All right. There you >>

070have it. Sharon Liznow from the Michael Liznau Respit Center. Thanks again so much for joining us. And uh oh, it looks like uh oh, we had a bit of an injury out there. So, we hope he's okay. It looks like a bit of an injury down on the floor. And we certainly uh don't want to see anyone get hurt. So, we uh certainly hope he's okay. and he'll he's getting a nice applause as he's uh helped off the floor by some of his teammates and we give him our best wishes. >> So, I kind of missed what happened, but again, hopefully that's an Ashlin firefighter. So, hopefully he is okay. >> Yeah, looks like a knee injury. So, uh hopefully he'll be okay and uh certainly don't want to see that. >> Yeah. So Tom,

071I actually have uh a special guest as well. We have Chief Rossy from Ashlin Police Department that I'm going to go ahead and have a quick conversation with. >> Absolutely. So let's uh we'll get Chief Rossi in here. >> Definitely. >> All right. Want to welcome Chief Rossy over here to the broadcast. Chief, how how's everything going so far? >> Good. Um, we did lose one round, but we won a round. So, >> I see. Now, how So, how many teams just from Ashland? I think I saw three teams or >> There's two. So, police and fire. >> So, just one of each. Okay, gotcha. And I just saw actually someone from the Ashland Fire Department just got hurt, so hopefully he's doing okay. >> Let's hope he's okay. >> Yeah. Now, what has been

072I see you're on the sidelines coaching. Um, very vocal. What are uh you want to share any of your tips or any things that strategies that you're encouraging your uh Ashlin fire team, Ashlin police team? Um >> so we can call it encouraging. >> Okay. >> I can't say threatening. >> Yes. Yes. Yeah. No jobs on the line or anything like that. Yeah. >> Um this is just the the greatest time for the greatest people, the greatest cause. Um this is the second year. Um I'm part of the planning team. Um, so this is very important to me and my crew has just really taken this on as as something that they love, they look forward to. So >> yeah. And so I think we have about so 18 teams about six 15 or 16

073towns. I just heard from from Wendy the goal next year is to maybe double that, 30 to 32 teams. Um, so what are your just thoughts of just knowing all the all the towns, the fire police departments kind of coming together for this great fundraiser just as the police chief of action? How does that what does that mean to you exactly just getting all these communities together for something like this? >> I think it says a lot about the character of the people that we have in public safety in this area. Um, I know that Sharon talked a little bit about it um in her opening speech, but there's such a small amount of personal time that we have and for them to be willing to give up a Sunday morning uh to come out

074and volunteer their time to take part in this. Um, it just tells me and hopefully, you know, the community see what giving and and loving people they have in their public safety departments. Yeah, I I totally agree. Um, now I have not been to the new um police station, fire station in Ashland. You know, uh, my kids are one kid left in the high school. You want to just maybe share a little bit about the new facility? I think it's three or four years old at this point. >> Yeah, I think three years we've been in. Um, it's amazing. Um, everything that we need to get our jobs done. We have the space. we have um you know just the top-notch um facility for the top-notch people we have working there. So um no I'm

075I'm really happy that the men and women are really happy to be there. Um the space we were in before >> was not it was not conducive to doing the type of professional job that our citizens expect. Great >> now. I think we've raised the expectations have been raised with the building and I think we've risen to the occasion very nicely. >> Yeah. No, I I totally agree. Um any expectations on the Ashlin Police Department in this tournament this year? Are you expecting them to kind of make a run or what what are your thoughts right now? >> I think we're 50/50 right now. Anything can happen. Yeah. So, >> and what happened last year? Like how did they do last year? Do you do you remember? >> Um not that well. >> Not that

076well. So, so, so far they're already >> we have a year of experience and we we we're already doing better than we did last year. So, >> was one of the strategy were they were they instructed to watch the movie, the dodgeball movie? >> Um, that that was part of roll call for a few weeks. Yeah. >> Okay. Y >> and is there any like you got the dodge, the dip, the duck, the dive, the dodge as well. Any What's what's the main D the strategy for the team for for success? >> Um, don't get hit, but hit other people. >> Hit other people. >> Yeah. And don't get injured. >> Don't get injured. Oh, no. Yeah. >> I always say it's about fun, getting a good workout, but no injuries. So, as best we

077can, >> that's why I'm not playing. >> Are are you going to try and make a debut next year? You're going to stick with the coaching on the sidelines? >> I think coaching is in my future, >> which to me could be more stressful because you're kind of you're you're the one that's kind of giving the strategy. >> Manage the whole thing. >> Yeah. Well, listen, I just want to thank you for all of your contributions to the town, your involvement with um with your team as well, and just having you as part of the community. Again, uh I'm in Ashlin. I have three kids as well. So, just just love the um the presence that the fire department that the police department has in our community. And I've had a couple calls at our

078house. We had a carbon monoxide once and just you make the phone call, the fire department, the police department came and it just it makes you proud of just to be a resident of Ashland and uh >> walkers the clockers as well. So, >> um, but anyway, I know your team is going out there again. Want to thank you again and yeah, I appreciate Enjoy the afternoon. Enjoy the fundraiser. All right. >> Okay. Thank you again. Appreciate it. >> I'll take that. Thank you. >> That was Commissioner Rosie over there. Rosie, I'm sorry. And Ashlin Fire, I think, is I can't tell if that's Hington or Ashen right now. That's actually NIC. All right, we have a five on five going on over here. Welcome back, Tom. So, oh, we had Oh, we have a

079first catch over here. Little reflection catch. Still trying to figure out who's on the left side. >> See Nic on the right. And on the left, >> I want to say it's Milford. >> I think it is Milford. >> I think someone got hit on Milford. I don't think he's going out right now. Nope. I think one of our volunteers saw him. >> So, we got four on three and did he get hit? >> Yes, he did. Four on two >> again. You stay a number. All of a sudden, someone gets eliminated, >> right? >> All right. Two on two. >> Oh, >> still two on two. >> I thought he hit him, but >> we got to get a replay of that. Great dodge. >> That's our dodge of the day. >> Dodge of

080the day. >> Twoon one. Oh, we just got hit. We jinxed them. >> Who is gonna take it? Oneonone. Niclford. Here we go. >> Yeah. >> Conor the ref. He's not just refing. He's working on the crowd as well. Trying to get everyone going over here. Side on throw. >> Oh, both of them still in there. >> Yeah, I can tell their arms getting beat. Oh, wait. WAS THAT A DOUBLE ELIMINATION? HOLD UP. HOLD UP. >> NO, he's calling a >> sudden death over here. HERE WE GO. >> Conor's been waiting >> 65 minutes to do a sudden death. Now, are they going to blindfold them or >> our first sudden death of the day? >> I know. So, I'm not sure what sudden death is, but >> Well, we'll figure it out as we

081go. >> They both uh it's like a fresh start. >> Okay. Okay. >> And it's oneonone and uh you try to collect as many uh balls as you can from the middle and >> just try to get that elimination to win it. Look at that. The diversion >> Oh, HE DROPPED IT. >> It went off his fingertips. Nearly caught and Milford takes it. >> You know what? If you have a lot of butter on those fingers, you got to be careful. Just you're going to drop the ball. So, >> good competitive match. I like it. >> Absolutely. That was a great match. >> And just like in hockey hockey playoffs, nice little handshake. >> Exciting time over here at this part of March. You got we start off with dodgeball. You got the NCAA men's

082women's tournament. You got the hockey going on. >> Well, and of course you got the MIAA stadium. >> You got the MA. Yeah, I heard. Um, >> was it Medfield or Medfield girls basketball? Congratulations to them and >> solid team in in the Tri Valley. >> I was covering that for uh TVL Sports Net, a show which you could catch on WACA TV and HCAB and uh several other local stations in the Tri Valley League towns. >> So, were you at the finals game when they were >> I was. Yeah. Uh Medfield TV borrowed me for the day and I actually had the call on that game. So, it was a lot of fun uh broadcasting the action in that uh state championship game over at the Sagas Arena. And >> and and who do

083they play? >> Uh Medfield. Uh they played St. Mary's out of Lynn. So, uh and took home their third straight state title. So, that's just unbelievable. Three straight state titles for that Medfield girls basketball team. >> So, over here on the left side, we have our MVP or NDP most dodgeball player, 41, has her glasses back on. hands down had one of the best runs of the tournament. >> And I I just they're called the Young Guns. >> Young Guns. Okay, >> so we got the Young Guns going up against Nic Police. >> So Nic Police, I think they're the defending champs, right? >> Uh yes, they are. >> Nic one of them. >> Wow. All of a sudden Nic Police just stepping up their game. I don't think they have anyone eliminated. So yeah,

084six on three. So NIC is uh in a very strong position right now. Look at this. Going in for the kill >> and a good dodge on the young gun side. >> Oh, hanging in there. And then there's two quick eliminations. >> All right, so 41's got to do some good coaching over here. >> So unfortunately that's it. >> Hopefully we can get a couple big catches here. >> Yeah, unfortunately number eight. Oh, there's >> Did they bring Okay, she's back in there. I thought I thought they were going to substitute for a bow, but >> they're just >> So, that's what you want to do. If you're the last one standing, hang near that back line. >> So, you uh >> And now she's knocked out of the way. But there it is. >>

085That was going to be tough. It was literally six on one over there. She did the best she could, but You want to try to avoid getting yourself in that position, but sometimes it's unavoidable >> at that point. You just got to keep your eyes open, maybe try and make a catch, get another player in to help you out. >> All right, so who do we got here? >> 15 minutes intermission. >> All right, we're going to have a a bit of a break, uh, intermission. So, uh, it's been a great event so far. We got the big matches coming up. >> Okay. >> I I think we're getting down to what, the uh, Elite Eight or something like that. So, we're going to go and we're going to try to get a grasp on

086where the brackets at. So, we'll step aside and we'll be back in a few minutes. You are watching 2026 2nd annual Battle of the Badges benefiting the Michael Liznau Resbit Center. We are live on HCAM and WACA TV in Ashlin. folks. We're going to keep on going. >> I've got the results from the round ramen matches that were played. Can I get your attention, please? From group A, advancing. >> Advancing, we've got Franklin Fire and Planeville. From group B, advancing is Eden Hall Ducks and Franklin Fire G2. And from group C, we've got Devon's Fire and Nated Fire advancing. Also advancing is going to be Young Guns and Dodge Squad from Police Department. >> All right, so if you heard your team name, you will be advancing for a chance >> to move up to

087the semifinals and the finals. Starting with our first teams, we've got Planeville Ballers Club versus Franklin Fire G2. On deck, Devon's Fire versus Native Fire. So, if we could please get to the court. Planeville Ballers Club versus Franklin Fire. All right, welcome back to the 2026 second annual battle of the badges to benefit the Michael Liznau rest pit center. We are ready to continue on. Tom Nappy, Brian Sad on the call and Brian, it's been a very fun event so far and we are getting down to the final stages of this battle of the badges. Yeah, we just, you know, during that long intermission, we had a chance to uh connect with the coordinators, actually have the website right now. Very organized, just the more and more, I mean, this is only the second um

088event over here. We're already excited about next year's events. Going to be bigger and better. So, we have Planville, Planville Baylor Club going against Franklin Fire. >> Planeville, I'm sorry, versus Franklin Fire. And here we go. Whoa. >> All right, we are underway. Hey, they got the intense music on and >> we are a go. >> It's all fun and games until we get to the uh >> so we had the group stage before the break. So essentially there was uh three groups of four. Everyone played uh the three teams in their groups and now we're at the elimination stage. So this is the bracket stage. So one loss elimination. Planeville Ballers Franklin Fire doing battle right now. Laneville on the left. Franklin on the right. >> Two quick eliminations over there. >> So we

089have is this five on four it looks like. Okay. >> Five on four. Five uh on the right on Franklin, four on Planeville. Good block up front there. >> And look at look at those strong throws. >> They are. >> And wow, some good dodging up front. I believe the uh back of the jersey said uh Von Vogs or Von Boss. Oh, that's a shot to the left leg over there. >> Oh, Laneville down to two. >> Oh, >> DOWN TO ONE. THERE IT IS. >> WHOA, that was quick. >> Franklin taking the win. And uh they got nice jerseys and they have some nice dodgeball skills. >> They do. And all of a sudden they they saw blood or they saw the opportunity and it was just bang bang boom and they move on.

090And now we got Devon's Fire up against Nic Fire. So Franklin Fire they So they were the fifth seed going against the fourth seed. So now Franklin Fire G2 I think it means like team two. They advance to actually play uh fire one. So, we're going to have uh a Franklin vers Franklin matchup coming up next round. But right now, we got Deans, who is the third seed, up against NIC, who's the six seed. Devons on the left, NIC on the right. Winner moves on to take on the Edenhole Ducks out of >> Imagine being in the uh Franklin Fire um building tomorrow with these two teams. The amount of >> One team's gonna have serious bragging rights. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And one team's going to not be so happy. >> No, no, no. It's

091going to be interesting. >> But before we get that, we got to check out who get who advances to play the uh Eden Hall Ducks. We got Devon's fire and nic fire. And here we go. So, this is a five on five match. 5v5, not six. >> Some great background tunes. >> That's That's what you need. You need the intense music for the elimination. >> 100%. >> It's all about the music. both. All right. So, uh Devons has lost one. So, it's five on four. They've lost two. Five on three. They've lost three. Five on two. Very quick eliminations. Clearly, you want to be on the right side. Both first round. Um right side one. oop. >> Oh, the Deon still hanging strong with two, >> but uh >> Nic still with all five in

092there. >> This is going to be tough for Devon. If they pull this off, it'd be one of the biggest comebacks. >> Nic is just Oh. >> Oh, that's a good block. Another block. >> They're using the ball as a defensive mechanism and offensive mechanism. Oh, that's >> a catch. brings one back. >> Here we go. >> And uh Nate has lost one. So it's four on three. Now it's three on three. >> Three on two now. >> Yep. Back to two on two. >> Oh, two on two. Two on one. Deon, here we go. We were talking about the comeback. >> Deons was just down to their final one, but they were able to come back. >> You don't want to get Oh, >> oh no. It hit off a bounce, so that does

093not count. So, still one on two over here. >> They need a catch. Nic needs a catch over here. >> Oh, look at that dodge. >> Oh, he's he's dipping right now. >> That's a candidate for dodge of the day. >> Oh, there it is. Demons comes back >> to win it. >> What a comeback. They were down to one person. >> One player. >> That was unbelievable. battle. >> You know, it's kind of like in poker, >> you know, chip in a chair. One player in a ball found a way to uh to advance >> the semiinal. >> Yes, we're going to the semifinals now. >> Our first game in the semiinal number. >> Here we go. Franklin vers Franklin. So, which Franklin will survive? >> I feel it's a lot of pressure on

094you and I right now because they're going to go back and watch this replay over and over and analyze so that whatever happens next year, but >> Franklin vers Franklin, >> this is like the ultimate match for Franklin. You don't want to be the side of the firehouse that doesn't have the bragging rights. >> Franklin Fire one verse Franklin Fire G2. And it's interesting, one Franklin team came prepared with their jerseys. The other iss we're just going to wear whatever we can. We're here to win. Doesn't matter. >> So the Franklin G2 team, they're on the left. It's police and fire. So that's a mixed >> Okay. Oh, interesting. >> Team and then Franklin Fire is on the right >> and we have let's see 36 on six over here. So, the nice hockey jerseys

095on the left and uh the other Franklin Fire Group on the right. Who will take it? Both of these teams have been very strong today. >> I'm moving back. >> Oh, look at that. Some contact. >> Yeah. >> Oh, it's getting physical. >> I'm making a lot of money that Franklin's going to win. That's That's all I'm going to say. My money is on Franklin. Here we go. No eliminations yet. Still no eliminations. Oh, there's one on >> Yeah, we got one on the right. >> On the right. >> So, six on five. >> Let's see. Is that six on four? Six on four now. >> Six on. >> Now, six on five. So, one guy's in the back. >> Okay. >> Oh, and he just dropped it. >> Now it's six on four. >>

096Now six on four. Nope. >> Now it's five on four. >> That's a bounce. >> Now it's five on three. >> He got hit twice. That's a nice lefty throw. >> It's all fun and games until a dodgeball is in your hand. >> So, Franklin Fire won. They're the one seed and they're uh down to three. Down to two. >> I think that's it. >> Are they down to one? They're down to one. >> Down to one. Okay. All right. So, listen. De did it last time. They are down to one. >> We could have a upset alert here. >> If I'm this guy right now, I just focus on catching the ball. You need some help with the teammate. That's how Deon came back. Oh, he's in trouble. Oh, got just dodged. Did he

097get hit? He did. He did. >> He was honest about that. >> Franklin Fire G2 advances. >> And Franklin G2 just knocked off the number one seed. Franklin Fire number one. So, the fifth seed just knocked off the first seed. >> Yeah. Big upset. So, now we got the two seed Eden Hall Ducks and Devon's Fire coming up. >> Yep. And the winner of this goes to the championship against Franklin Fire G2. >> As I said, we love the jerseys on Franklin Fire G2. So, they might get not only the title, but the Oh, we have uh >> Speaking of nice jersey. >> Yeah. And they played each other earlier. >> The Eden Hall Ducks at a Hopkins tint. >> Yeah. Were they so they must have been in the group stage together as well.

098And again, Johnny Cross, who's running the Boston Marathon today, one of the uh key individuals kind of hosting this event. >> So, they were not in the group stage together. So, I don't I don't think these two teams have played each other. >> I I meant um I meant the Eden Ducks versus Franklin G uh Franklin Fire G2 when they played. >> That's right. Those two were in the >> They Yeah. So, yes, >> could be a repeat of the first or second match of the night, >> but we got to get there first. So, let's see what happens. >> That's right. A long way to go. Eden Hall on the left out of Hopkin. Devin's on the right. >> Who is going to take it? Five on five. >> That's two quick eliminations right

099there. >> Oh, there's an elimination on the left. >> That's a >> four on four now. >> Or four on >> four on three. >> Three on three. >> Oh, did he get hit? No. It went off the ball. >> Yep. >> Oh, that's elimination. Here we go. >> Elimination. Hopkins has a three on two. Three on one. >> All right, here we go. >> Eating all ducks trying to go for the win. >> Remember, Devin actually had one player last round that somehow made it. Can they do it again? >> I'll tell I'll tell you, they got a strong player out there. There's elimination. Twoon one. >> Oh, there it is. There we go. One-on-one. >> Who's going to take it? >> There's a good dodge. There's a throw. >> No. Oh, they were

100on the ground. He had an opportunity there. >> OH, HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY. >> OH, NO. HE DID IT AGAIN. >> DEONS FIRE taking the win. >> Backto back. One guy, one player left. >> They had a threeon one and came all the way back. Oh my goodness. You cannot leave the dev team. >> What a match indeed. >> And great effort by both teams. >> Yeah, >> huge upset. Deans comes back, gets the win, they advance to the championship. So it'll be third seated Deans against fifth seated Franklin Fire G2. >> So you know, sometimes having a buy in the first round doesn't help. Too much rust, I guess. >> Yeah. >> So, we're gonna move. >> All right. We're gonna go to the police bracket now. >> Here we go. >> So, we're

101gonna have a police champion, a fire champion, and then an ultimate champion. >> So, we got the police semifinals coming up. This is Ashlin Police >> versus the uh NIC Young Guns. >> Where are you finding it on the website, Brian? That one I couldn't find. I I just ended up taking a picture of it cuz I couldn't get there. Yeah. >> So, this is the finals. >> Finals for the police. Yeah. >> All right. So, Young Guns and the Dodge Squad out of Ashlin. >> And of course, Ashlin has our uh police commissioner. >> Young Guns out of Nic. So, here we go. >> Oh, one out on Nic. Nic's on the right. Ashlin on the left. >> We got Nic in the blue. Ashlin in black. >> Actually, everybody's still in there. Foron

102or do they have one out? >> Oh, they're doing six on six. So, it is still six on six. >> No one's out yet. >> No one's out right now. >> Oh, is that our first? Nope. No elimination. >> No, he uh knocked that away with the ball. >> Oh, that's a catch. He's out. Oh, >> Ashlin has a couple out. So, it's six on four. >> Got to be careful going for those balls if you >> Oh, no. They got five in there. I'm getting confused. So, it's six on five. >> I thought he was out. >> Seven on five. Seven on. Seven on seven. That's where the confusion is. Now it's six on five. Has one out. All right. There's another out. Oh, two out. So, uh, Ashlin down to two. Five, six

103on two now. >> Uh, Ashley's in trouble. >> And Nic comes across. >> That's it. >> The young guns from Nic. >> Nic takes it. >> That's right. They're the defending champions, the Native Police. >> That's right. >> And they they already have their name on that beautiful trophy. Will they put it on again? We shall find out. >> There's only one name on that trophy. Last year, as you said, the NITC uh police uh department over there, they're looking for back-to-back champions. >> The odds of these many teams, these many talents to have a back-to-back champion. A >> lot of pressure. But before we get there, we got to see who they're going to be fighting against. >> Franklin Fire G2 up against Devons in the Fire Championship. >> So, this they'll get the

104firefighter title in this one. And then uh you'll have the ultimate championship where it'll be the winner of this match against the NIC police. >> The question is does n does just say I'm going to go with one person because when they have one person they're deadly like they just their game rise is like >> yeah I think it's been a couple times today they've been down to their uh >> person and uh hung in there >> and they were down 3-1 2-1. >> So Deon's on the left, Franklin on the right. So Deon has >> beautiful hockey jerseys. >> Yep. Now Deon only has five players. Let's see how much Franklin comes out with. >> I think for Devon their strategy is less is more. And here we go. So we're going to go

1055v5. Oh, we got the music going. Oh, look at that. They survived the >> first in fire. First incoming fire. Both teams still have everybody in there. Still five on five. >> Oh, that's a catch. >> So, one eliminated from Devons. That's two eliminated from Devons. >> Oh, they're in trouble. >> Three eliminated. All right, we have a five on two. >> Down to one. >> Here we go. >> Can Deans do it again? One guy, one player. >> No, I'm sorry. There's two. They got two. They got two. Now they got >> Now he's Now he's not one. And another one. Franklin Fire takes it. >> Yep. >> So, we'll have Franklin Fire >> versus the Young Guns of Nicattle. >> Nic going for back-to-back champions. I'll give Deon, you know, a big >>

106round of applause. They had in the um semis, they were down to one guy for two matches. It's just tough eventually. Uh it's tough to kind of come back from that, but uh great turnout though from >> Deans. >> We first like to recognize the winners of our department here >> and we're going to set it down on the floor right now. >> Peter Shay helping out. >> So for the police department winners and champions, we've got Young Guns from Come on up here, young guys. I know he's >> going to be an investigation on this going to be an IIA. All right. A nice round of applause for N. And could we please give Rand Flag J2 up here doing accept their trophy? All right, guys. We're going to take a quick five minutes

107before we get to the final final >> which is going to be versus Franklin Fire. Who's going to win? Stick around to see five minutes. >> All right. So, they're going to take a little break and then we're going to have the championship. Franklin Fire up against NICT Police. Can the NIC police defend their title? We'll find out in a few minutes. It should be fun. Brian. >> Yeah, it should be fun. You got NITC in the blue. They they're representing the baseball uniform. You got Franklin in the red. Little hockey, but uh these are two teams that have their individual police fire trophies, but as you said, it's all about the big one. >> Absolutely. >> Talking the name on that plaque over there. Nic going for back toback. Franklin trying to be uh

108the first uh first team that's not NIT to get their name on that large trophy. So exciting. Come back in about 3 four minutes. >> All right. And uh for now, we'll let you enjoy the scenery, including uh the mascot fight going on. You had tuned in to the 2026 Battle of the Badges live on Ham and WACA TV. All right, welcome back into the Hopkins High School Athletic Center. We are just about ready for the ultimate championship match. We got Franklin Police and Fire on the left and it'll be Nic Police trying to defend their title on the right. And uh what a day it's been, Brian. It's been a lot of fun. Some great dodgeball matches out there today and uh just a fun allaround uh morning and afternoon here at Hopinson. >>

109Yeah, great. You know, it's a beautiful day out. We got St. Patty's Day. We got the prey going on in the city, but you know, a lot of sports happening today with uh college hockey, college basketball, but it starts with this incredible fundraiser over here. Second uh Dodgeball tournament. you know, as you had the interview earlier, I think they're hoping to maybe double the amount of teams, which will be absolutely incredible. Um, so a lot of uh great awareness, a lot of fundraising going on, a lot of fun, but it's going to come down to two two teams over here that have their individual police fire trophies. It's all around that big trophy over there. Nix's going for back-to-back champions. And uh you you got two of the teams out there with I'd say some

110of the nicest jerseys we've seen today. >> So here we go. We are ready for the championship match. Franklin police and fire against NIC police. Who will take the second annual battle of the badges title? We'll find out now. >> And what's interesting, Dodgeball 66. We have a seven on seven match to start this. >> No holds bar. Here we go. And we got first out. >> One out. >> One down on Franklin. >> Seven on six. >> Oh, six on six. >> No, he was he not out. >> Oh, did he get out of the way? Must have got out of the way. >> I thought he got hit on the arm, but you know, maybe he got out of the way. >> He might have got it with the ball. >> Oh, you're

111right. >> I think he blocked it. >> Yep. >> We got very good officiating, so they're not going to miss much. >> Got Connor, No, and Trevor. It's not easy officiating. It's such a high pace. Up. up. >> That's two out on three out on Franklin. >> They're down to three. Yeah. >> So, it is six on three. >> Six on three. >> Nic they are looking to defend that second title. Looking strong right now, but there's an elimination. Five on three. Oh, good uh block there. Four on three. Oh, no. Still five. Sometimes they got to track down those balls. They get away >> and they run out of the uh the square there for a bit. >> Yep. >> Oh, there's an elimination on Nic. >> So, this is the first time Nate

112is going to have to uh they've been down right now. They they've been pretty dominant. >> They're down four. Yeah. Four on three. >> Four on two. Someone else got eliminated. I feel you blink and someone gets eliminated. >> See Franklin hanging by that back line. back in. Uhoh, >> there it is. THAT'S A HUGE CATCH. HE GOT TWO OF THEM. >> HE GOT TWO OF THEM. UH-OH. >> We have Nic is down to two players. We have a four on three. No, four on two, I think. >> Franklin looking to take the upset. >> Three on two. I thought they get an extra guy. Oh. Oh, no. >> Yeah, it's three on two. >> Three on one. >> Can Na come back? They have one player in. >> Oh, it bounced. It was off

113a bounce. So, she's still in there. She's going to have to catch one. >> Some good dodging. >> Careful. >> She clearly read the patches of Hulahham training manual. >> Oh, that's an elimination. Twoon one. >> Franklin tried to catch it. Dropped the ball. >> One player. Nic Franklin. Two players. >> Oh, look at that. So, she's blocked. >> Yeah, she's got two balls in the hand. So, that's two extra defensive. >> Oh. Oh. >> OH, HERE WE GO. WE HAVE A ONE-ON-ONE. >> Here we go. >> IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS. >> You know, catching is not going to help the other team right now. So, here we go. >> Nic on the right, Franklin on the left. >> OH, NO. >> IT'S FRANKLIN. >> What a battle though. That's how it should

114come down to the championship. Oh, gets the win for Franklin. What a match. >> Came down to one-on-one. Franklin able to take it. And uh let's send it to uh the floor for the championship announcement. >> Two out of three. >> Oh, two out of three. >> Two out of three. Okay. >> Oh, did not know that. So, here we go. >> Well, we're glad someone knows the rules up there. Thank you, Dave. >> I was Thank you, Dave. I was wondering why they were setting up the balls, but okay. >> All right. Okay. So, it's not over yet. >> No. And that was a great I thought that was a great competitive game. >> It was. And this is going to be >> All right. >> Just as competitive. Here we go. Best of

115three. >> I like that. You know, best of three. >> Yeah, you got to do it for this championship. This is a great championship. Oh, one out on NITC. >> Yep. >> So, Franklin wins. It's over. If Nate wins, we go to the third and final match. One out on each team. >> So now we have Now we have six on six. >> Yeah. Six on five. >> Six on five. >> Nope. >> Oh. Six on four. >> The guy in Nit was trying to catch the ball from his own teammate and got eliminated. >> Nic police. >> Oh, another NIC player out. >> This is uh five on three. >> Five on three. Yep. Ball bounced. >> Oh, there's an elimination on Franklin. Four on three. >> Oh, she and she dropped it. So,

116we have a three on two. Three on two. >> OH, TWO ON TWO. >> OH, she's out. >> We one. Here we go. Oneonone. Let's do it. Let's get the crowd going. OH, THAT JUST MISSED. >> I thought I almost hit him. Just missed. >> Blocked. >> OH, YEAH. NO, >> HE JUMPED OVER IT. >> WOW. >> OH, THAT'S IT. >> THERE IT IS. >> WOW. >> HERE WE GO. >> WE ARE GOING TO A FINAL MATCH. >> Back to back. We had one player each. Now it's it's Here we go. best two out of three. Franklin won the first one, Nic the second one. >> So, uh, whoever wins this match, they take the ultimate title >> and it'll be the 2026 Battle of the Badgers champion. >> I'm just hoping we get another

117one one v one to end it. >> It's very possible, I would say. Yeah, >> kind of seems to be the theme of this. >> It should be. >> And you can tell if you just look at the players, they're sweating. They're into this. It's all fun and games until the trophy is on the line. And here we go. >> Well, from what I understand, both of these departments built dodgeball training facilities. >> And if they are if they didn't, then they're doing it next for next year. >> Oh, there's an out on NIC. >> Six uh seven on six. >> Seven six. >> So Franklin has Oh. >> Oh, another out. >> Yeah. Seven on five. No, no, no. I'm sorry. We have someone on Franklin now. >> Six on five now. >> Six

118on five. >> Six now. Five on five. >> Nope. Five on four. >> First time NIC has had the advantage. Oh. >> Oh, there's another That was a double elimination. >> Down to two. Down to one. >> Down to one. HERE WE GO. >> NIC TITLE. AND THEY GOT IT. >> WOW. NIC police defend their title and they win the battle of the badges for the second year in a row. >> This is why NIC is the defending champs. They were down to one player in that first game. >> That was a quick That was a quick championship match. >> What a match. >> They just went bang bang bang and >> congratulations to the young guns of NIT. >> Back-to-back champions. >> Unbelievable. And uh lot so many close matches here today. >> To

119me though, it will come down. My biggest memory was number 41. I think was that on Ashlin or was that Devon or Ashlin in the black shirt earlier in the pool games and you know she was by herself for about two minutes. Got hit in the head. Broke her glasses. Stayed in the game. >> Oh yeah. >> Yeah. I'd say she's uh an MVP today for sure. >> Yeah, definitely. But, uh, Nic Police, they win their second title in a row. And, uh, let's set it down to the floor for the championship announcement. >> A big thank you to everybody that came out here today. Thank you everybody once again for coming out to the second annual Battle of the Badgers dodgeball tournament >> in support of the Michael Wrestman Center and Johnny Krauss running
