Good evening everyone and welcome to the Ashlin Middle School Gymnasium in Ashlin, Massachusetts for boys varsity wrestling brought to you by WACA TV. Tonight's Tri Valley League matchup features the Hawinson High School Hillers versus your Ashlin High School Clockers. I'm George Tubin and I'm fortunate to be joined tonight by longtime friend, former wrestling phenom, Mr. Brett Walker or also known as Mrs. Walker's husband. Amanda Walker's husband. Right. >> It's great to be Yes, that's true. In Ashlin, I'm much better known as Mrs. Walker's husband, but I'm thrilled to be here with you, George, and I appreciate WACA bringing this broadcast to Ash. >> Yeah, thanks, Brett. It's awesome to have you here, too. Um, as we come here now, you know, for wrestling this year, the Clarkers are four and three in duels this year,

while the Hillers seem to be one and one in duels. I think the Hillers have had entered a lot of tournaments. Um, and only had two DS so far. Um, >> 132 >> based on what Arbiter says. You know, Arub is kind of the place we all go to look at sports schedules and wins and losses and everything. Um, >> the other interesting thing that's happened this year is the Clockers now have a new wrestling coach, head coach, uh, Mike Pablo Biano took over this year from longtime coach um Pete Zukilli who's still here helping >> um but you know Mike Mike's not with the helm. >> So a lot of changes >> multigenerational head head wrestling coach here in national is he not >> believe his father was also wrestling legend here. >> Exactly.

>> So as as we get going tonight I know you've been following wrestling here in Ashland for some years. You've been a wrestler. What are some of your thoughts here? >> That this is a really exciting team engaged in a very exciting sport on a particularly exciting evening. And actually, before I go any further, >> uh George, were you going to talk about what makes this night in particular? >> Yes. >> A meaningful one. >> Yeah, absolutely. We're going to get get to that. >> All right. Very good. But before we get there, >> what we're going to see is some of the best athletes in Metro West matching up monoemano in a fascinating sport. Those that are familiar with wrestling might agree with me that high school wrestling is actually the most fun level

of wrestling to watch aside from, if you ask my son James, uh, professional wrestling, he would say. Uh but as far as watching collegiate wrestling or Olympic wrestling, >> to me often times it's not that exciting because these both of these athletes are so good. These ma nothing ever happens in the matches. The matches ended up becoming 3 to2 to three type matches. Whereas in high school, you're seeing some really exciting moves. You're seeing throws. Uh you're seeing reverses and you're just not seeing at the collegiate Olympic level because they're just too good. But here in high school, you find this disparity between those kids that are juniors and seniors and know all the moves. And kids that are freshman and sophomores don't get taught the moves there in real time on the mat. >>

And we'll be pointing that out as we go along tonight. I'm sure it's going to be very We're going to take a moment for the national anthem. You see by the dawn early light what's so Christ. Heat. Heat. Now, George, were you aware that we had such a loud crowd here. >> I had no idea. And I didn't know the national anthem was going to be played at that moment. Obviously, that kind of snuck up on us. We thought they were going to, for some reason, skip over it and then they jumped into it. So, so, so we're back. Um, captains are now um out in the center. and we'll see how the matches get underway. Brett, we were talking earlier at the, you know, at some high schools and colleges, uh, first match, you

know,, you know, the first weight class is kind of picked out of a hat, uh, selected at random and then you go from there. It seems like, you know, the way we've been doing it at Ashlin anyway, we started with the lower lowest weight class and work our way up. >> And that is the more traditional way. So, we're going to be starting with the 103s. Uh, I'm sorry, that weight class has shifted. Every few years, they shift the weight classes. So, we're at the 106s. Uh, the lowest weight class, 106. And here we find ourselves in the 106 weight class. And you're right, George, that's the traditional way of doing it, starting at the lowest one and working your way all the way to that heavyweight. >> But actually, before we go any further,

so have we identified who we got wrestling here yet? Do we HAVE >> Is this Is this Lucas Nams? >> I believe it is. >> I'm sorry. Please bear with us as we're trying to figure out who we got wrestling here for Ashley. So, our Ashlin wrestler got the the first taked down there. That's that's an award of three points. >> The idea being take a player take the opposing wrestler off of his feet and then you gain control over him. Then the Hopkin wrestler, they've got a a one-point escape. Fortunately, we got yet another taked down. So, that's additional three points. So for those keeping track at the score at home, that's 6 to8. >> We about 44 seconds left to go here in the first period. >> Lucas looks like he's doing a

good job staying >> sting fighting against that reversal of that escape. reversal played to Hopington here. >> And we got 5 seconds left. So, this is a time when you're either going to want to make a bold move, try and get that three-point or just rest and wait for the next period to start. And you saw you saw Ashlin going for the knee pick there, >> but it was something of a half-hearted effort. >> And Brett, for those listening, you know, for I mean, some people are familiar with wrestling, some are less familiar. The hop hopping player started on the bottom. That was the hopping player selection, >> right? And so at the at the end of the first period, one of the wrestlers will get to choose. Do you want to be on top

on bottom or um or do you want to decline? And the idea being if you're on bottom, you're trying to go for that onepoint escape. If you're on top, you're trying to go for the back points of the pin. U maintain the control. >> All right. So, what just happened there? This is going to be a one pen a one-point penalty on Ashlin. What he did was he started going into the full Nelson. We're all familiar with the half Nelson. Uh putting your arm under the elbow and then on top of the crown of the head there and trying to leverage their their elbow. That's a that's a very legit move. Full Nelson, however, is is a very dangerous move. And our referee correctly broke it up before anybody was hurt. Unfortunately, also means we

got a penalty of one point penalty against us. And I think there was an an escape on top of that. So the match is now at 63. >> All right. So it looks like we're going for the cradle right now. This called a far leg cradle. Um very effective, but it depends on you being able to hold your hands tighter than he can kick his legs. And as you saw, Hoffington kicked his legs a little bit harder than we were able to hold the >> Yeah, imagine you have a pretty good grip to go against leg strength. So, this is Lucas Nees. Uh, he's a freshman. >> This is his first year wrestling and he's got he's got a lead right now with 30 seconds remaining in the first the second period. Very promising wrestler

here. >> Yeah, he's got eight wins this uh so far on varsity this year, >> which is very impressive for a freshman >> to be sure. I'm guessing there's half the moves in the wrestling repertoire he's never even heard of. So, this just must be a heck of an athlete. >> Yeah, >> he's got great technique. >> But that also explains how he accidentally went into the full Nelson. He's just just not familiar enough yet. >> Now, what he's trying to do right now, he's trying to crank that elbow under us. Oh, >> and saved by the saved by the buzzer. >> Saved by the buzzer indeed. >> So, we entered the third period now and um Ashlin has had the choice and Ashen actually elected for neutral position. The advantage of neutral position is

that you can get yourself a three-point takedown if you're confident in doing so. Um, so that was interesting. He went into the head and arm, I'm sorry, he went into the uh the the tie up, head tie up, but then he shucked he he did a shuck move and went into a takedown on the lower body instead. >> What was somewhat novel about the way he did it, that he lets him up and goes for a double leg essentially. Um, what was novel about the way names did the shock there was that usually people will take a few breaths. They'll go into the tie up. I'm sorry, it's called the collar tie up. I said the head knob the call. You go into the collar tie up and you usually catch your breath, wait a

few seconds, then go into it, but he went into it immediately. I think we caught Hington off >> and they went out of a circle. So, there's a stoppage. 122 left here in the final period. Ashley nine. >> Hopping in five. >> Another take down. >> We got the take down. Yes. Another three points. >> And now he's going to let him up, it looks like. So, >> yeah. All right. So, that's going to be a one-point penalty. I'm sorry, a one point, not penalty, escape. But >> to be clear, it was an intentional escape means wants Hopkins to get up because she wants to get his next takedown for another three points, >> right? >> Yeah. The the uh the law of numbers. If he keeps getting takedowns while the other opponent gets escaped,

she's getting three while the other opponent's getting one every time. So, makes sense. >> Oh, and a good double leg there, resulting in yet another three-point takedown. Now, what we haven't seen Nees do up to this point, please refresh my memory if I'm wrong, but I don't think we've seen him get any back points yet. >> No, he's he's tried, as you mentioned, he's tried to crank him over a couple of times. I think he's looking for it here, but he just can't get the leverage, >> but Hopington's been on the defensive since the the the first whistle blew. >> 15 seconds left to go in the match. >> Ashlin up 15 to six. So at this point, all he has to do is stay off his own back for the next five seconds and

that will be a win for Ashland. >> And so it is. >> You got a couple points on that roll over with the final score. Ashlin 15 and Hopington six. I'm sorry, eight. But I'll tell you what I liked about that, George, is that this this Hopington wrestler, he kept fighting until the end. He knew that he wasn't going to win, but he kept fighting. He didn't give up. He didn't get lazy. Uh he he acted like a warrior, and I respect that. >> Yeah. >> So, next up, we got the 113 pound weight class. And this is one of Ashlin's captains. Actually, this is Cam Fel here. >> And he weighed in today at >> 116 and a half. >> Wrestling in the 113 class. So, what if they they gave him a little

bit there? >> Oh, no. I'm sorry. No, it is 116. That That's strange. >> So, Cam Fel comes from like many of these astronauts. He's a legacy. father was a very accomplished wrestler, but also actually an accomplished collegiate soccer player. And >> so Cam got got himself a three-point takedown, but then he threw on an extra two points for back exposure. look like he's going for uh he's pretending that he's going for a half-hearted um >> half Nelson there, but that's really distracting the hockey to play. What he's really looks like he's trying to do is put in the legs. He's trying to hook the legs right now, but distract the guy with the Oh, no. He really is going for the half. No, Ryan. Yeah, >> he's going for the half Nelson after all.

>> You're about halfway there. >> Halfway to the half. Nelson's I make a quarter >> a quarter I guess right >> right up there at the the edge of the mat >> trying to >> oh now he's reaching Hington just reached back that's one of the cardinal sins of wrestling when you're on bottom there's somebody on top of you never reach back because you set yourself up for a monster of a half Nelson at that point but I I don't think Cam had time to do it before the referee blew it up and brought them back into the center. >> Yeah, >> all right. We got an escape here by Hopping. He nearly just peeled off Cam's hands there. And and truth be told, >> Cam wasn't doing a whole lot with that, >> but

he certainly is from the neutral position. >> Whoa. >> Oh no, he's been stacked. >> That was >> But he rolled right out of it. >> Now that was an exciting 5 seconds, right? >> That was almost a fatal mistake by Cam there. >> So he was rolling into it was the problem there and Hawinson caught him on it. But then to Cam's credit, it might have just been superior strength. He rolled him right back into into his own stat >> based on that reversal. And um scores now Bashlin seven, Bucket and six in this match. >> So Cam chose the bottom position, evidently taking it for granted that he'd be able to escape. Now he hasn't technically escaped right now. This is one of those difficult situations. Hawinson's holding on to his Oh, and

now he has escaped and then brought it into a reverse. So, as opposed to getting the one point for escape, he's actually going to get two for the reverse. >> Now, he's going to see if he can hook something to get him on his back. >> He's got the half. He's got the half, but he's got to get more perpendicular at this point. Got all of the Ashlin team up on their feet over here, George. There's not a butt and a seat on the Ashlin side. >> Yeah, >> coaches are yelling out instructions. >> Now, see what I would do here. You see how he's planted his right leg? This is a time when you might want to transition to the far cradle. When someone plants their foot way out there like that to prevent

the half, Nelson, it opens up. You have >> now he's dragging him back in. He drags him back in. Oh, he's sunk that deep. He sunk it. You got it there. All right. >> Well, he got him like over towards the edge of the mat and Hopner player wisely was trying to get himself out out of out of bounds. >> Cam saw that one coming, dragged him back in, stuck him for the pin. Second period pin. >> Congratulations, Cam. So we now have a cumulative team score of nine to zero. Ashalt got a 120 weight class weight class here. I believe this is Dylan Duca. Is that correct? >> Oh, that's is that Dylan? >> I believe it is. >> I had the pleasure of coaching Dylan in baseball uh last year. When I took

a look at his body, I was thinking to myself, this guy's much more of a wrestler than a baseball player. >> Is Dylan a freshman? >> Yes. >> And another freshman for Ashlin. He's actually >> thus far anyway performing very well. >> Just >> But you look at the you look at the muscle on Dylan. >> Look at he's got him. Does he have enough leverage to get those shoulders? >> Well, and here's the thing. There's a minute and 10. Oh, and there's nothing. I was going to say >> he's got a minute and 10 left. He's not getting out of it. He'll he'll exhaust himself before >> before that clock runs. >> Brilliant. >> Now, look at the muscle composition on this kid as a freshman. Yeah, it's a Yeah, >> that three three

pins. >> That's two pins plus a plus a >> decision. Oh, is it three pins? >> So, that brings us to 150 Ashley. I apologize. It's three three. Yeah, >> I believe we're now at the 126 weight class with Braden Fields. >> Is that correct? >> No, I don't think Braden's wrestling. Braden is injured. >> Oh, that's right. Cuz he's supposed to be one of the captains, isn't he? >> So, is this Ryder? >> Ryder Lawson. >> Is that Ryder? Russian is another freshman. >> Another freshman here. >> He has four wins on the year. >> All right. So, for the first time all night, George Ashlin finds itself trailing on the individual match. Now, let's be clear. Oops. I guess that's going to be two back points there. >> Oh, good job rolling out

of that. >> He did roll out of it, but his arm still stuck the other way. >> He's going to get him. It's all right. Valiant effort by a tough freshman there. >> So that's going to bring our team score to 15-6 Ashlin. >> And scoring Brad for uh scoring for a pin versus a decision or or win on points. >> Right. And so we're looking at uh we're looking at five for the five for the pin and then we're looking for believe it's three for the technical on or the for the winning by points time. >> Of course I'm I'm going back to the '9s. So it could very well be those scores have changed since >> so this is Barbie. >> Oh, now here's yet another kid that's just so muscular, so strong.

>> Another kid you probably coached in baseball. >> Yeah, I did. That's right. I'd say about half this roster at some point. And if you put the two of us together, George, I think we probably coached everybody on this roster. >> I was going to say, yeah, I know I coached. He looks very different from when he played baseball for me, though. >> All right. This is some strange scrapping right here. And I wouldn't say any of those are actually moves. But now he's got a cross face on. And he's just it looks like he's trying to close up a cradle. >> Barley has 12 wins. uh varsity wrestling this year. Oh, he's got the cradle. >> He does. He does have the cradle. I'm not sure if he's but he's going to get his

back points there. >> Yeah. >> So, that'll put that'll put >> barely at five at seven to zero. >> Got him again. >> Oh, >> nice bridge though with the Hopkins. >> Yeah, that is an impressive bridge, isn't it? >> Uhoh. So, we're going to Hawington's going to get one point for uh escape there. Then he just went into a head and arm throw. Haunting goes into a head and arm throw. Shows Barley's Bobby Barley's back to the mat. >> Barley's up 11 to four with just over 30 seconds left here in the match. >> Oh, that looks like a pin. >> Nuts. It's amazing how the the flow in wrestling can change like on a dime. You can be >> up a 100 points and then you know it's one wrong move and you're

you're you're pinned. >> And I'll say that that was a good match by Bobby. >> He fought hard. He was aggressive. He never never slowed down. It was an impressive feat. The problem is, as you bring up, George, in wrestling, as long as there's three seconds left on the on the clock, you can still lose. And uh once someone sinks that head and arm throw on you, boy, that's a tough one cuz they got you locked in on your back already. It's awfully tough to get out of a good head and arm throw, which is what happened to Bobby. >> Yeah. >> Who do we have here? Oh, this is this is Dylan Hoshman. Uh, so this is yet another freshman. >> Wow. >> This bodess well for Oh, wow. Reach back. Got a dangerous

move there. And that's why you don't reach back. Um, but it comes down to, you know, he's a freshman, so these are the kinds of things that uh you have to get out of the system. But my understanding is Hashman has been wrestling for a few years with the middle school program. Coach Chimera, of course, about uh about seven, eight years ago brought in a a middle school wrestling program to Ashlin and has produced some excellent results through it. He follows them through high school, but he's introduced a passion for wrestling to a lot of Ashlin kids. And it's my understanding that Hosman here is is one such bid. >> Yeah. >> He's going to have to readjust that head gear. Yep. >> Hman, he has 17 varsity wins on the year, which is for

freshman. >> How do you even get in 17 matches this early season? >> He's got a problem with his head gear. He somehow seems to have more matches than anybody else in the team. >> Well, you know what it could be? You go to these tournaments and you lose your first two matches. That's it. You're done for the day. But you go to these tournaments and you win matches. You just keep wrestling and wrestling and wrestling until you make it to the championship. So, the ones that keep winning get more matches. And perhaps that's how he manages to accumulate 17 when others have fewer. Huh. >> That must be it. So, I'm going to take a little break here as um get a little time out for a headgear issue. >> And so, George, you

are the voice of Ashland at this point. Uh I've heard you announcing, of course, football and and announcing hockey and now you're out doing wrestling. So, which one is your preferred announcing? >> Well, I've also done uh girls hawk uh girls field hockey. >> Oh, I apologize. guys. I haven't heard you on that one yet. >> Soccer. So soccer. >> Coach Coach Molly Bennett out there though at uh with the women's field hockey team there. >> I I I'm a I'm a little biased. I um for whatever reason I love hockey. I love watching the game. It's such a fast non-stop game um that it becomes very exciting to watch. I mean I do I like all the sports. Um some of it might be now that my son is playing hockey. So that you

know that always becomes your favorite sport. Um, what about you? You seem to be at every sport there is. Um, >> well, I'm a big fan of every sport in which Ashlin of course participates. I would say that and my wife and I watch as many as the Ashlin basketball games as as we can, too. We haven't brought those ones up yet. Uh, we came awfully close. So, so yesterday, uh, we lost by five, but at one point we're within three points with like a minute left in the game. So, that the team's improving. Uh, but I'd say as far as watching Ashlin Ashlin High wrestling might be my favorite to watch right now. >> Wow, it's perfect. You're you're in the perfect spot. >> All right. Dylan seems to be in control here. Then

that was one of the most vicious wrist controls I've ever seen. I'm not even sure what that move would have been aside from that he turned his wrist around and leveraged that somehow. >> Now, what I'm sure that the coaches are going to discuss with Dylan is uh >> his habit of reaching backward, which we've now seen him do twice, both to to his peril. Now, we only have 5 seconds left at this point, George. Uh, so I I think this one's going to get blown up before any further problems. >> I think you're right. >> And we find ourselves going into the second period with a one-point discrepancy. Ashlin four, Huffington five. >> Needs to get get a point back and get a little bit extra here. But >> as somebody who's had uh

shoulder surgery, reaching back is also not good for you physiologically, let alone what it does for um >> your wrestling technique. >> Now look at this. Dylan's wrestling off his knees right there. That's that's a problem. And George, we talked about football and and stuff. You can't play anything athletic on your knees and wrestling is certainly chief among them. But what you can do is turn someone >> as Dylan just did. >> Yeah, they're dangerously close to the edge. >> Did we not get a Did we not get an escape from that? >> I I didn't see the points go up. Oh no, now he's got the pin. So ultimately, I suppose it doesn't matter because Hawkins gets a pin, but I think we got shorted on a on an escape there. >> I think

you're right. This is another one of those instances where the game turns on a on a second. Just one one wrong move, one wrong turn, >> and it's over. >> Congratulations to them. The Hopkins uh did a great job there. Yeah, that was good. So, we now find ourselves entering the 144 weight 144 pound weight class. Is this uh Dean? Is this Dean Lune here? >> I think it is Dean. Dean has six wins on the year. >> Hey, I was sharing with George before we went on the air that this is where we've really entered my favorite series of weight classes, these 140s and 150s. These are my favorite wrestlers to watch. These guys are big enough and strong enough that they'll do a lot of throws and they'll do a lot of exciting

moves, but at the same time they are fast enough that you see what kind of action we're seeing right now. >> Dylan is a junior. >> We got an arm bar in here. Hopington takes down Ashlin's uh Ashlin's Dean Leon and then gets an arm bar. But it seems we were saving any back exposure points there. And look, see this? See how Dean just jogs back and takes his position. That's a show of strength right there. Don't wander down with your head down. No, Dean Lun showing he's ready to go. >> Definitely definitely wants to bring it on. >> Breaking those wrists and turn around and get >> and then turns out he was ready to go. That's two points for Ashley. digging in. >> How common are broken fingers? Uh, Brad. >> Yeah, I'll

tell you that's You know what's far more common is the broken nose. a takedown where you go face first and you you bust your nose. >> Most wrestlers that I know that will wrestle through it. Just stuff uh we used to uh um take tampons, jam them up there if you were bleeding too bad. I'm not sure if they still have that practice anymore, but it was very much culturally acceptable in wrestling. That's how you did it. Um, what the referees are very careful about though is if there's exposed blood out there, they're not going to let you go for health reasons, >> right? >> Um, you get you can have a blood time try to clean that up and the referee will give you a certain amount of time to see if you can

stop the bleeding. >> Fortunately, we haven't seen any blood here yet in these matches. So, pretty pretty clean so far. >> Agree. But we've certainly seen we've certainly seen some tough tough competitors out there, huh? >> Yeah. with >> about 17 seconds left here in this period. >> Ashlin two, Hopkins three in this match. >> Competitive. They seem to be pretty evenly matched. But >> yeah, I agree. And you know what's else is interesting? As you look at these wrestlers, they're really similar body builds, which again is one of those things I really like about the 140 150 weight classes is that you're not finding disperate body builds going against each other. you're finding two people that really built the same and it's just a matter of who's who's more skilled. And here I'd say

you have a tough argument to say either one of these wrestlers is more skilled. They're both excellent wrestlers. There's a buzzer. >> Hoping will decide where to start. Now, George, what do you think of the motif we've got going on here with the whole gym being dock and just the one light shining down in the center of the map? >> Everybody loves this gym with with the one light and it's it's so um old school when it comes to wrestling. It's it's just has such a good vibe to it. >> It really does. It's it's >> unique. I've seen this nowhere else besides here. >> No. the whole entry too, you know, when they come in with Hell's Bells and, you know, the lights, all the lights go down and center light comes up. It's

and anybody who hasn't come to a wrestling match should really come here in person and see it at the middle school. >> Still, I mean, no points have um been awarded either way for the last maybe minute or so. >> And now, see here, we see Dean still he's hustling to his spot each time. He's showing Hopington that he's not he's showing his opponent that he's not tired. He wants this. >> That gets in your head. >> Yeah. A lot of psychology involved. >> Now they're they're in there's something of a loose tie up here. This is just a shoulder tie up. It seems neither one of them wants to commit to a collar tie up. Um really what they're trying to do here now. He's just messing with his head, but it looks like

they're trying to send each other up for perhaps an ankle pick. >> Well, it looks like he got halfway through either a knee or an ankle pick. Now, Brett, what would you do here in this situation? >> Uh, I'd actually at this point I would try to do a snap down. It's called >> Still a lot of time left and Ashlin's Dean Lun finds himself on his back. This is not going to go well. There was another >> Everything seemed to be going pretty evenly and all of a sudden I don't know where there's a pin. >> That That was a frustrating one for Ashland. Ljun was doing a good job out there. >> He had the moves. He had the energy. He had the strength, but uh just didn't have the luck today, it

would seem. So this is Max Gamboa. >> He's a senior and we now find ourselves in the 150 lb weight class. What with what we believe is Max Gumbbo wrestling senior. >> Yes. So on that last one Oh, sorry, George. >> I was going to say doesn't seem like Max had a lot of um matches this year. Once again, indicative of a lot of wins, huh? >> Yeah. >> Probably got some hardware from tournaments this year. >> Oh. All right. So, that was a that was a modified arm throw there by Hawkington. It's a very risky move. Uh it can pay dividends when you've got a very aggressive wrestler. You use the the the arm throw like that when you got a very aggressive guy in a tie-up who's pushing into you hard who really

wants a piece you can go into a modified arm throw an arm throw or a fireman carry. All are essentially the same movements. Get use their momentum to carry them right over your shoulders and put them down which is what happens here. >> Yeah. Look like a like a judo throw. >> Yes. About a minute left to go here in the first period. Hington up 300 in this match. >> Now see at this Oh, I'm sorry. >> No, I was going to say player really trying to get that half nail. >> Well, yeah. I think he's gone to a an armbar at this point. Now we got into an armbar stack. Um which worked unfortunately. Yeah. It almost looks like um Max tried to reverse his way out of it, but got caught in the

roll. >> Yeah. And it and it looked as though he knew what this was coming. You could see how tight he was trying to keep his arms to his body, but uh the Hopington wrestler managed to force his way in onto an arm bar. And once that arm bar gets thrown in, it's awfully difficult to get out of that thing. So that was the 150 weight class. We've now pushed into the 157 weight class. And do we know who our wrestler is yet? >> I think it's Aiden Barbosza. >> Oh, of course. >> All right. So, Hopington takes a single leg shot onto the left leg of Aiden Bosza. Uh, and he's sunk it, but look, he doesn't have control yet. So, the snore remains 000. He's simply got the leg and now he's got

to do something with it. Barbosa would be he should be throwing on a cross face right now. Just There you go. He's put on the cross face and Oh, it almost worked. >> The referee was mere moments from giving us our our nuke. No. >> Yeah, we got it now. >> And we've got we got the taked down. And see, that's the irony of it. Hopington did the single leg shot and and walked it in, but it ends up being Ashlin that gets three-point takedown. Barbosa really hit him hard with that cross. And now he's going for another cross face. Crossfacing again. Presumably, he's going to try to do a neuron stack of some sort. >> Yeah. >> And you can see at this weight class, too, the kids are muscular a little bit thicker.

>> Yes. >> They're a lot more strength involved. I mean, they're still still pretty quick, but now now we're starting to move into the strength category. >> It is. And it's a different form of wrestling, is it not? >> Yes. >> All right. So, Aiden's >> knocked off his head gear there uh with some with some very aggressive cross faces, but it's a legitimate move and he has put it to use >> and he seems to be alternating back and forth. He'll try to go near arm stack, then he'll try to go to a cross face. >> 15 seconds left. which I expect at this point Hopkins is just going to try to worm his way around and just try not to show his back to the mat. >> I think the time is going

to run out here before anything happens. >> He goes for a sit out. Looks like he was trying to out a sit out possibly a switch there. Hington uh he had the right idea but he didn't have proper wrist control on Aiden's left arm. >> That was the part he seemed to miss. I think Hington uh >> their decision where to start and they coaches chose top. >> Questionable choice there uh that you'd want to choose top on Aiden Bonosa. I'll bet you's out of this thing in 7 seconds. >> Let's see. >> Oh, well I was very wrong on that. What's fascinating here is we've got a we've got a 150 pound wrestler >> that just tried to put legs in. >> Legs are usually seen the leg moves are much more frequent in

the weight classes below 130. So Aiden didn't get the escape in seven seconds as I had predicted, but he did get the reverse in about 30 seconds. >> Yes. >> Which brings Ashlin to five. Ashlin's Aiden Barbosa to five points over Hawington's zero. Oh, that's one point. Escape Hington. >> Now it's 5-1. Let's let's see the strategy here on our >> Oh, so it was once again it was a single leg shot on Aiden's left leg once more. But Aiden managed to catch Hopington on by doing a sprawl, thrusting out his legs and his hips and landing on top of the back of the of the other wrestler to prevent him from locking in on the leg. >> It's called a sprawl move. >> Very effective, too. the reset back in the center of the

mat. >> You know what's one thing that's impressed me uh in so far in this meet Matt uh this meet George is and I hope I don't curse it by saying this but we haven't seen much stalling. We haven't seen much slow wrestling. We've seen a lot of energy lot of player wrestlers con Oh, look at that. So >> So we've got him taped down by Ashland and we got the back exposed. So that's going to be five points. He's going to get him over. >> He's pulling his other arm. Oh, he's got it. >> He's got it. >> Great job by Barbosza. >> A well wrestled match by both. And for the first time in a while, Ashland is the benefit of the quick pit. >> Nice job there by Aiden. Yeah, it seems

like Aiden's been wrestling forever. >> He showed it. He showed that he's been wrestling forever with his variety of moves >> and with his confidence on the mat. >> So, uh I guess we're in the 165B weight class now with Melino Islanders. Although I'm not seeing any stats on this. >> No. >> Apologies. We're gonna have to do a little bit of research and figure Oh, that's a head and arm throw. Holy head. Holy moly. >> So, that was a masterful throw by Hopington. What they failed, what the Hawking wrestler failed to do was land in a perpendicular position and Ashton just rolled right through it somehow and put Hoffington wrestler into his own head and arm hold. >> Brilliant move. >> Maybe that was the play all along. You know, maybe he was just

luring him into it. >> So Ashlin now finds itself in control a 3-0 lead. And by the way, for total team score at this point, Ashland trailing by nine, Hoffington 30, Ashlin 21. >> Out of bounds, they'll reset in the middle. Ashley chose Ashley chose top here. I believe this is Arthur Arthur uh >> Sierra. Arthur Syliera, sophomore and looks like going to top was a a good choice for him. back exposure that brings Ashlin to seven. >> And he's got an arm bar sunk. Arthur Syliera here. He has got an arm bar sunk on Hawkington. As we said in the last match, that's just so difficult to get out of. Oh, but he did rolled right through it. >> Wow. Now, George, have we seen a single match go the distance? >> No, we've

not. No. And I thought So, we have moved up to the 165 because he usually wrestles at 157, but he's wrestling at 165. >> Okay. So, I wonder if this situation where Ashlin didn't have anybody to enter. Uh so they took a they took another wrestler and moved him into a different weight class. >> Yeah. >> So they could get them all covered. This, of course, means somebody's wrestling at the disadvantage because he'll be five, six pounds, eight pounds smaller than his opponent. But when you're talking 160, it's not as it's not as significant a difference in in the broad scheme of things, >> right? Yeah. A few pounds at this weight's much different than a few pounds at 113. >> Correct. >> Yeah. >> Arthur looks to be pretty much in control here. Still

up 7 nothing. and >> trying to figure out a move to get him on his back. Uh, >> now it seems like he was going for wrist control there, which suggests that he was going to want to put in an onbar, but uh, it didn't come to fruition. He's kind of got his right leg >> stuffed in the back of his left leg, the crook of his left leg. So, it's going to be hard to move him. >> And so, Arthur here, he comes from a New England Gold Club, which actually he's shares that membership with a few of the other Ashlin wrestlers here, including Dylan Dylan there, and also Chase, who we're going to be seeing shortly. So, he sunk the armbar again. He's got the armbar. Trying to get that flip. I just

can't get the leverage. Now he's Oh, he's got it. But oh, >> I'm not sure if the cartwheel was a good idea there. >> What's that move called there? There used to be something called the Grammy roll, but uh I I I don't think that was it. >> Although that'll end of our second period. Still up seven to one here. Two minute two long minutes to go. Very long minutes for the wrestlers. >> Yeah, that's that's a really good point. We were talking about hockey earlier. cocky. Of course, you these these athletes are getting off the ice about every minute, whereas in wrestling, you're stuck on there for six minutes, friend. And it is an exhausting six minutes. And if you let up for even one second of it, you're on your back, >> Which

we've seen >> several times. >> You have to be in amazing shape. Every part of your body. It's not It's not just your legs, not just your arms, not just your shoulders, it's fingers. Everything has to be in good shape as a wrestler, >> right? What do they say? It's it's it's half physical and 90% mental. >> Yes, Yogi Vera, I hear you. >> Arthur leading 11 to one here with a minute 30 to go in the match. >> And so that means it's all wrapped up, right, George? He's got it in the bag then. >> One thing, one thing we've learned about wrestling is there's no such thing as in the bag, right? >> No. And and this truly is it ain't over until it's over kind of uh sport. >> Kind of like

many of the baseball teams we coach together, George, you know, where you're up by six runs going into the sixth inning. Oh, don't worry. Don't worry. >> Don't worry about it. >> Fine. We're up by six runs. What could happen? >> Let's Let's put an a kid who's never pitched before. Or what could happen? >> Right. Uh referee's having some conversation with the scorekeeper with the uh pop in and coach. Don't know what the nature of the concession is, but seems like they got things settled. Ashton will start on top >> again. The score 11 to one. Uh about a minute 25 seconds left to go here in this match. So, one thing I'll point out about Arthur Gillier here, as strong as he is and as gifted as he's been in many of the

things we've watched him do these last five minutes, >> he seems to be obsessed with the onbomb and maybe he in wrestling you often learn uh moves in pairs. So, like you go for one type of move and when that doesn't work, you quickly transition to another because the classic example is the the uh the half Nelson. When someone tries to uh oppose you on the half Nelson, they're usually exposing themselves to a cradle. Yeah. >> So, you switch back and forth and he's got to learn that for the on balls, too. Maybe go into a stack when he's denied the onar. >> What are we thinking here? 30 seconds to go. Herman pretty much has to get the pin. Yes, >> Harvard just has to, you know, not not get pinned. >> Yeah, but

you know what? Look at Hawkington. He's tired. He's not doing anything. He's just clutching that leg as tightly as he can. He just wants to avoid any further points against him. So, >> I don't think I can. >> I spoke too soon. No, I spoke too soon. >> Oh, and Arthur's able to roll out of it. Wow, that was close. >> I got to stop making predictions, Sean, cuz each time I do. All right. despite my bad my my best efforts to curse the team. Uh Ashen pulls it out >> and we finally have a match that made it made it, you know, the full six minutes. >> Our first one took us getting to 165 lb weight class. >> So this is uh so we now roll into our final four mat >> well

actually it might be our final three matches of the night with a fivepoint differential. Now, >> now pray, who do we have entering the mat now? >> I think everybody uh >> everybody in action knows this guy. >> Anybody that watches football anyway. >> Well, how about everybody in the state on account of Kevin Lumba was just named all state football player and uh I don't think we're going to see him on the mat very long. >> No, this this could be a very quick match. So, that was a that was an excellent head and arm throw by Kevin Uzalooma. Uh, so that's going to give him three points for the taked down. Then he got his additional back points. >> Uh, the ref got to blow this up. He's off the >> Yeah, play

was kicking himself out of bounds as fast as he could. >> Yeah. Ke also broke the alltime Ashlin rushing record for uh >> football as well. So, the kid's quite an athlete. >> Yeah. demonstrating to us this evening that it's not uh he's not a onetrick pony. He can do a heck of a lot more than dominate on the football field. >> Yeah, Kevin has 15 wins wrestling wins this year when he gets the pin. >> All right, so how many wins does he have now? >> This is 16. >> That mean 16. >> Congratulations, Kevin. Kevin made short work of that. now. So, now we've got Ezra Hatchet coming in. >> Uh, so I'm guessing he's actually wrestling up to 190 is my guess, >> which means >> Oh, wow. That was aggressive. All

right, so as soon as the whistle blew, Ezra went at him at the Hawington guy. Got himself a a single leg taked down. immediately rotated behind to take control and now finds himself 3-0. >> So fast. >> Now Brett, let's go back to your earlier comment about the speed at the 140 level. >> Yeah, that's true. >> Look at this. And wow. Oh, reversal. And another reversal. Now look, this is the second time this has happened to Ashland where we initiated the head and arm throw, which by the way may be the coolest and sexiest uh move in wrestling aside from possibly the sup play, but um no one really does that because you're responsible for returning your opponent to the mat safely. It's it's just too difficult to do. >> So the head and

arm throw becomes the de facto best most exciting oh move in wrestling actually pulled it off twice. And also there's a lot to be said for side mount because we've seen, you know, when when the two wrestles are perpendicular, they just keep rolling. And if you don't have that, like right now, he has some side mount control. He's in a much better position to get him flipped over on the back. So you you've illustrated a really important point, George, or at least described one, and that's thisund this 90 lb weight class is not typically where you would see any sort of fast shot on the lower body right off the blow of the whistle. Heck, you might not see a shot the entire match, let alone on the whistle blow. Uh Ezra's redefining that >>

and I think it's going to be to his benefit. >> Yeah, he really is super aggressive and when he's coming in there trying to get that arm in, >> it's almost looking like a punch to the face, but it's >> but he's just really trying to dig that arm in deep. >> Mhm. >> And if the I guess if the other wrestler happens hit in the face, he get in the face. So we find ourselves at the end of the first period with Ashland up six to one. >> Very active, very aggressive first period, you know, as you said, especially at this weight class. >> All right, so Ashlin gets the choice and to nobody's surprise, Ezra's going to choose neutral. Uh, so what do you think, George? He going to take another quick shot

or is he going to mix it up a bit here? >> Oh, he mixes it up, >> but he and he's not afraid to tie up. goes into the collar tie up. So maybe he's gonna try a head and arm throw as we've seen him do before. >> Guess who's only a sophomore? >> Oh jeez, >> that kid's going to be a terror by his senior year. >> Jeez. >> Oh no, now it's Hawington that's going to go for a half-hearted head and arm throw. >> Ezra shucked it off and then just went into uh his own gets the taked down. now up nine to one. >> Now things now things have slowed down a little bit. >> Yes. Yeah. Now now it's easy doesn't have a whole lot is going on. Yeah. >> This

might be one of those situations as we saw in one of the earlier matches this evening. George maybe just let him get up. Let him get up. Go get Go get some more takedown points. >> Get some more takedown points. >> All right. Uh so we just got called for something called clasping. Now, what you're not allowed to do is interlock your own hands around your opponent's waist. That's called clasping. Now, what you can do is you can grab his wrist uh with both of your hands right next to his. That's the way you get around it is you just grab his wrist with one hand, then you bring your other hand in and grab his wrist with the other, but you get the same control, but you cannot just grab your own hands around

the waist as Ezra just did. So, that's going to be a one-point penalty to Ashley. >> Now, the score is nine to three. catch it up. >> All right, Ezra goes for a shot. Hopkins's not fooled. He spraws on it. Unfortunately, just not strong enough. >> All right. Do you want to explain what just happened there? >> Wow. >> Got the leg shot under his legs, picked him up, knocked him down. Now he's going to get the pin. >> And that's a pin. >> And the Ashlin team is going absolutely nuts on the sideline. >> And justifiably so. That was one of the most exciting. That one's the most exciting move we've seen all night. Ezar goes in for the single leg shot. Hington's not fooled. He knows it's coming. He spraws out just as

he should, but it turns out Ezra was just too strong. Drove right through him as if it is a football play. Picks him up, puts him onto his back. All right, Chase Williams entering the mat now. Ashlin's heavyweight here. >> Chase Williams. Is he wrestling at 215? >> Oh, guess he's wrestling at 215. I suppose that's Chase there. Yeah, that's Chase Williams. >> That is Chase Williams. >> Now, Chase has been wrestling for some time. He's actually got a background in MMA, mixed martial arts, too, which as you can as you can recognize translates quite well into wrestling. >> Let's see if we can see some MMA moves here as the wrestling goes on. Ashlin now ahead 37 to 30 in this match. >> Now, Hawin was apparently afraid of the tie up there and

tried to go for some sort of knee pick. Chase. Oh, look. Oh, Chase almost got to the >> He saw it coming and sprawled out on top of him. He hasn't gained control yet, but but Chase, while not in control as far as getting points, Chase is in control of what's happening in this match at present. >> He's getting that looking to turn him over. But >> what Chase is doing really well right now is he's staying on his toes. And remember, we talked about this earlier. up. >> Hington gets uh gets the the taked down in the end, but Chase is doing a good job staying on his toes, which gives him a heck of a lot more strength. But now Hington's got an arm bar sunk in on Chase. >> Chase flipped himself

out of it, but the referee called a pin as he moved himself through the escape. I think as he was going through the escape, his >> opposite arm must have just glanced the mat. >> It feels as though he didn't get enough time to execute the move. I agree with you, George. He didn't He was not a dead fish there on the mat. He was >> He was fighting and uh he had a plan. >> Yeah. And I think he had a great escape there. I I question that call a little bit, although I never question referees or umpires. >> They got a tough job to be sure. Now, so we find ourselves uh Ashland Ashland faithful. We find ourselves in the lead of by one points 37 to 316 score going into the heavyweight

match here. I apologize. Earlier I said Chase is in the heavyweight. That was actually the 215 weight class. We're now in the heavyweight with Braden me wrestling for Ashley and looking like a stud out there. >> And me wrestles though at 196. And this weight class can go up to, you know, 60 lbs over that. >> But, you know, the the popular player looks like he has a few pounds on him, but not much. >> He does. And uh and Braden Braden looks awfully strong regardless of the the weight disparity. I think we've got equality here and strength. >> Both both teams up on their feet. This match is going to decide everything. Ashlin is up by one point. 3736 and obviously the outcome of this match is going to be the outcome of a

>> This is some intense wrestling going on. >> This is this is very intense. >> Two rival high schools with a one-point differential in the team score. Coming down to these heavyweights and these are not your old oldfashioned heavyweights of two fat kids rolling around. This is uh these are two very strong, large, powerful kids. >> Raamine is a senior. He's got five varsity wins this year. >> Just under a minute to go here in the first period. Ashlands have had one- nothing. >> Now, I must express to you a little bit of my concern. It looks like Braden's second wind there. Um, >> oh, he did a good job getting wrist control. Then he shucked the wrist and he went for a double leg, but it just didn't happen. He What he did get

though, somehow got behind Hopington and uh that's three points. >> Yeah, the Hopington wrestler does look like he's he's got 10 to 15 pounds on on me. So, it's going to be exhausting for me to try to move that weight around. But that's 10 to 15 Hopington pounds, which are soft pounds. >> For the Hopton listeners out there, uh, >> George apologizes. I do not. >> No. All right. Looks like we're going to get to the end of the first period here with Ashlin up 4 nothing. Can wrestlers at this >> weight class carry this intensity, Brett, for another four minutes? I mean, this is um >> Yeah, these kids have a lot of This is grueling. >> This is a lot of muscle, a lot of weight they're moving around. And I'm not just

talking about themselves, of course, but their opponent. They're moving moving a 200 something pound guy around for six minutes. Oh, now look how quick Brain Me was there with that that sit out. That's that move's called a sit out there and it was it was good. He didn't ultimately get his escape, but it was a well executed sit out. >> Me now will I think go out of bounds trying to get himself off the mat. Oh no, he's got he's got Huckington's leg. He wants TO STAY IN. OH >> YEAH. YEAH. Once >> I mean the referee had to blow it up there. They got too far out. But Braden was very close to getting an escape. >> One thing that's been impressing me, George, is the decisiveness of these Ashlin wrestlers. They're disciplined and

they know what they're going to do before they do it. See, like right there, Brad was actually so fast that he um he didn't wait for the whistle. That's going to be a caution, but that's not a penalty. I mean, a lot of credit to the Ashlin coaching staff, too, >> for preparing these kids. >> Yes. >> I coach Biano, coach Zili, who's been the wrestling program it seems like forever, and several other coaches. Yeah. looking against one minute left here in the second period. >> So Ashlin's up 4-0 right now, but that doesn't really mean anything as we've as we've seen this entire evening. >> Oh. Oh, >> Hockin ran out of gas. >> Hocket ran OUT OF GAS. >> OH, IT ALMOST GO FOR THE PIN. >> OH. OH. >> ALL RIGHT. SO,

UH, Braden me almost got the escape. Hington tried to pull him back unwisely and he didn't do it with sufficient force. Plus, it wasn't a move at all. And, uh, Braden took advantage of him. So, Braden not only got the reverse, but then got himself some back points. That's going to bring Braden scored a 10 over Hopington right now >> with 15 seconds remaining in the second period. >> Oh, and he's got him in the cradle, but just off off the mat. blew the whistle with 10 seconds left to go. >> Ashley Co just having a little rush. >> So, I'm guessing he's asking, "Hey, are we going to get any back points for the exposure there?" >> Right. >> And now, and now they're adjusting. >> No, four people says he put the points

on the board. Okay. So me, >> we apologize. We weren't we weren't able to figure out exactly what was happening there, but >> coach Gaviano was um disputing something. The referee gave him an ear. They had a discussion and the score remains 10-0 uh in favor of Ashlin's break lead. Reset for three seconds to finish up the second period here. Yeah. >> Okay. So, we're going to have Hoffington down. We're going to have Ashton top. Uh, we have everything to lose here because we're not really going to get any back points, but he could theoretically get an escape point. So, we have everything to lose. Oh, darn it. And that's what happens. >> Does he escape? >> That's what happens. The one point. Okay. So, we now find ourselves at entering the third period. 10

to one and cumulative team score. One-point difference with Ashlin in the lead. >> This match couldn't be more exciting. Coming down to the last two minutes with Ashlin up 10 to one. Hopkin and I think electing to take bottom position. >> Well, after the the the success on that last escape, I think I might do the same. >> Yeah, that's true. >> Although, that whistle seemed to have caught Hawin by surprise. >> Nope. >> Yeah, that's he put a he put an illegal headlock there. Yeah. >> On Ashland. >> That'll be a penalty point. Ashel now up 11 to one. >> Just a few seconds off the clock and we're talking reset in bottom position. >> 154 to go here. An exciting minute 54 seconds. >> I tell you, Ashlin, come out here. Come out

and watch some of these wrestling meets. Uh it's a very exciting opportunity. >> It's a lot of fun to be out here. Oh, great job there by me. >> He gets flipped but then reverses and keeps hopping her down. >> So, with a minute and a half left in really the entire meet, there's a minute and a half left until this meet is done. It just could not be closer. >> It couldn't. >> We're one we're one move by one good move by either of these wrestlers away from victory for Ashlin or victory for Hawington. >> Yeah. >> And I think to your point, Brett, what's happening here? These wrestlers are bigger. Uh they're expending a lot of energy and you can tell they're very tired at this point. I'm tired watching this. As am

I. Just the I mean just the effort that they're both putting into this. >> With less than a minute, we have Ashen Braden me on top and in control. But uh Hopkins has showed us time and again he can get out of this. >> Yeah. But he got out, but he was out of bounds when it happened. So, I don't think there's going to be any any points given or taken here. >> So, what I expect Braden to do now, I I think Braden is going to go for an ankle control. I I think he's been trying to hold them down and hasn't worked. I wonder if he starts reaching for Hington's ankle now to see if he can maintain control that way. >> Let's see. 45 seconds left to go here. >> Still a

long time in wrestling, right? >> It is. Meet up 11 to one. Well, maybe he should have gone for ankle control because Hawington just got the escape. And is that going to be a reverse? >> Might be reversed, but he's staying. He's He's keeping himself solid. >> 30 seconds remaining. >> If he stays off his back, he's got the match. >> Hopkins trying to >> And Braden takes control. 15 seconds to go. >> Two Warriors doing good battle here. >> 15 seconds and they're going to >> Hington is not giving up. Hington says, "I've got 7 seconds left. I can still get a pin. I can still win this." >> He's trying and now they're both out of bounds. Six. >> And they're both out of breath, too. >> They are. This is a grueling

match. >> Six seconds left. >> Absolutely grueling. >> Six seconds left to decide the winner of this Hillers versus Clockers Tournament. Hawkins starts on bottom again. And that looks like it's going to be a win for Ashland. >> Oh, and Ashlin takes it. That's the end of the match. Braden Mean wins the match 11 to one. Final score, Ashlin 41, Hopton 36. This was an excellent event. This was a lot of fun. We saw some extraordinary athletes, strong, fast, disciplined. >> We saw really good support by the sidelines. I I would say there's some pretty good coaching going on over here in Ashland. >> Yeah, a great match, great effort. Um surprised, you know, I haven't been out to see a Wesley match. We've seen a lot in previous years and we know that, you

know, Ashlin, you know, had some all state level wrestlers that have gone to, you know, college and um, you know, we had some younger wrestlers coming up. Some of the freshman were extremely impressive. Some of the underassman juniors, sophomores, um, you know, amazing effort by the Ashlin wrestling squad. >> It the number of >> really good >> run the raffle right before freshman that were out there. This is a harbinger of strong seasons to come. I think you're seeing the the uh you're seeing us continue to rise because listen, last season we had seven seven wins uh for me. So, this program is already strong and it's going to get even stronger. >> It is always with these young guys coming up. It's it's it's going to be fun to watch. >> So, with that

said, let's um we'll end our broadcast here tonight. Um, but I I did want to mention, you know, and I I you've heard it previously on the um the broadcast that tonight is the seventh annual Coaches versus Cancer um event sponsored by both Ashlin and Hopington high schools. Uh this event's been a cornerstone of the wrestling program over the last seven years. Has raised more than $30,000 over that amount of time. Uh the event really came to fruition in 2019 where some of the parents came to coach Peter Zilly and uh suggested that they do something for cancer and Zilly went over to the Hopman coaching staff and they got together and they proposed the idea and the communities came together to develop this coaches versus cancer um event and you know both communities have

been tremendously impacted by cancer so that you know they wanted to come together, do what they can to raise money for cancer awareness. And while these teams go against each other with intensity, and we've seen the intensity here tonight, you know, they're doing this program together, but they're out to win. Um they do fight together to win against a much larger opponent of cancer. So, if anybody um you wants to donate tonight, if you go to um uh to Ashlin Clocker's Club, any amount of money that's donated to Ashlin Clocker's Club tonight will go directly to the Coaches versus Cancer um or you could reach out um to Erin Williams or the coaching staff and they'll direct you on on how to donate. So again, >> thanks for all that information, George, and thanks for
