Rob Silva here at the Ashland Hall of Fame induction ceremony. We're about 15 minutes away from uh getting the event started. Going to talk to a few of the inductees for this in third inductee class and uh see who else is around the room today. Follow me. I said we're here at the Ashland Hall of Fame inductee ceremony. I found a couple uh members of the selection committee right here. It's Paul Capabiano and Pete Zilly. >> So tell us a little bit about the event and how you go about selecting people. >> Pete pretty much came up with this after we tried years and years ago, but he was determined, got it started. I think the first induction was 2018. The first year we did it was at the laborers's training which was a donated

uh venue and the last two times has been here at Lock and Tina. >> Pizza Killy, assistant football coach, wrestling coach. >> Not anymore. >> No. >> Volunteer. >> Retired wrestling coach. And u >> you're the inspiration behind the uh Hall of Fame. >> Like Paul said, we all kind of got together years ago. Well, we have a great committee that's put a lot of work in uh to make it to make it work and everyone has their own kind of piece to the puzzle to making tonight possible. And uh we have the the Hall of Fame's actually at the high school. It's in that athletic hallway where people can see like all the plaques of all the people been inducted over the years. Um but yeah, like like Paul said, it's it's a start

and we continue to build on it. We're excited about, you know, kind of where we're going. And and real quick, if somebody wanted to induct somebody into the Hall of Fame, nominate them. What What's the process real quick? >> Yeah, we need more nominations. We're always reaching out to the community for for more nominations. So, uh there's actually a nomination in within our program tonight. Uh one of the last couple pages there. Uh you can find it online on our athletic website at uh ashlandetall.wlewley.com. And uh the more nominations we get, the the better because uh you know, you have a bigger pool of of uh people to select from, all deserving. And you know, there's people that have been nominated years ago that haven't been selected yet, but they have the accolades to to

be in the Hall of Fame and there's it's just kind of a matter of time. You can only induct so many people here um with with the limited space and stuff like that. So, all right. Well, thank you. Looking forward to a good night. I'm with one of the inductees here, 2014 Ashlin High graduate Joe Burns, a star in uh football, baseball, and basketball. >> The real deal. Yeah, >> the real the real deal. Congratulations first of all. And uh what's it mean to be elected into the Ashley High School Hall of Fame? >> It it really means a lot to me to be honest with you. It's I was very surprised honestly when they came to me and said that I even had a shot to get in. Um just because it never you

know it felt like more of a team thing than anything when I was there. So I was surprised and very honored but um you know I think the the coaches during that time we all deserve a lot of the credit. >> So what are what are some of the highlights of your career in Ashland? Any any one thing stick out? Um, I mean, we won a TVL championship in baseball, which was, you know, huge. We went 4-6 the year before. Next year, you know, Matt Master came in, new coach, we went 16 and four, won the TVL championship. Um, we won the TVL basketball my senior year, which was really important for me. You know, I think basketball is my favorite sport. Loved it. That was a big turnaround for that program, too. And then

um you know in football when I I didn't play football until my sophomore year of high school when I started playing the team had you know I hadn't won a game in three years up until that point and uh so that first year was was really special and then having a winning season my senior year was incredible cuz >> yeah that was the uh the catalyst to turn the football program around >> and look at them right look at them now state championship and they you know they win every year now so And uh how are you still involved in sports today doing in any capacity? >> Yeah, so I I mean Coach McKay, we still coach the football team, you know, I do some things with him, you know, here and there when I

can. Um I went to TOPS, play football there, so I'm still, you know, reasonably involved in that program, you know, a few years out of that. But, um my wife's pregnant, so we'll be having my first my first kid. Um so then I think once that happens, I'll really be getting back into it. All right. Well, congratulations again. We wish you the best and thanks for taking a couple minutes with us. >> Absolutely. I appreciate it. All right. Thank you. >> I am with Nicole Jenjo, 2008 2009 softball MVP. Every single award that you can give out at the level her team also nominated and inducted into the Hall of Fame today. You were 62 and0 as a pitcher. That's just phenomenal. Went on to a nice career at BC. What does it mean to

be inducted into the Ashley Hall of Fame? >> I'm I'm so excited. I'm thrilled. And this is, I think, a dream come true for my family and this team. I wouldn't have wanted to do it without them. So, I'm really happy that they're getting inducted tonight as well. Um, yeah. And [music] even my brother was on the 2000 seat uh baseball championship team, so it's a nice night for Yeah, a nice night for [music] our family for sure. And uh what have you been doing sports-wise since you uh graduated out out of BC? I >> Yeah, I was coaching for a little bit collegiately and then I'm fully retired now living the corporate corporate life. Uh [music] yeah. >> Any occasional games? Yeah, pickup games. >> I did play slow pitch at my my company

for a while and then now everyone works remotely. But uh >> did you pinch or did you go >> No, no, I I I couldn't do that. There was too hard with the the the lob. But uh but yeah, I had fun. >> And what are some of the highlights from the your Ashlin High School career that you remember or one particular moment if anything? >> You know, it's so funny. I was catching up with some of the girls before this and the things that we would laugh about just like the bus rides, the different games. Obviously, winning two state championships is pretty special, but uh our fondest memory was just laughing on top of the [music] fire truck uh when we got back into town when we won. Um >> yeah, all good memories.

>> Well, thank you. Enjoy the night. Thanks for taking a couple minutes to talk with us. Congratulations. >> They're just wrapping up upstairs and we had a chance to have a bunch of welldeserved inductees to list Mrs. B. Barbara Bartholomew, Clem Balain, Ed Gilman, Jeff Delm, Joe Burns, Nicole Garento, the 2008 2009 softball teams [music] as well as the 2000 baseball team. And individually, we had a couple uh moments with Nicole Darento and Joe Burns. And both of the uh players inductees were [music] quick to point out they couldn't have done it without their teams and their coaches and very grateful and also their family. It was a really great event. So I hope you enjoy the show and [music] thanks for watching. Good night and go clockers.
