Oh, I see. I see a light. Light. Y says we're cool. >> Okay. All right. I'll call the meeting to order. We have a quorum and we'll do a pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> It's regarding that. You let us know. >> All right. Um, person wishing to address the board. Mary, >> I was going to try and wing this, but I decided I better bring it down. >> First of all, we really want to thank all of you for coming to our neighborhood meetings. And I know Mrs. Wright, you would have. You've had some pretty major things going on in your life. So, really, thank

you guys. That is really nice to be able to have the two-way conversations. Um, please keep the communication lines open with us. Um, still none of us think the athletic complex belongs in our backyards for so many reasons and not just because we decided to live there because of the privacy. There are many other reasons we feel it does not belong there. And we challenge all of you to come up with a solution with the possibility of expansion that makes sense long into the future. >> Thank you, Mary. I appreciate it. All right. Uh any changes to the agenda? Scott? >> Yes. H could you add on consent agenda V II uh approve the contract for Sean Gley, assistant softball coach? >> Yep. Absolutely. Any other changes or amendments to the agenda? >> I don't

think so. >> Okay. Then I just need a motion to approve the agenda as amended. >> Second, Dan and then Nikki. Uh any discussion? All those in favor? I post name. Motion carries. All right, Mr. Johnson. >> All right, we're already to March. Our February school attendance was a little over 92% which is pretty low. We had lots of flu and other things going around. Our absence list got smaller as the month went on. So hopefully we'll pass most of that. Um last Friday was end of the third quarter already, so we're starting our fourth quarter of the school year today. Um, last night we had a Coleian Skate City fundraiser. So, we had lots of kids at Skate City last night. That was kind of fun to see the kids there. Some were learning

to skate and some were pretty good. So, it's interesting seeing some of the good athletes that couldn't stand up very much. So, it's kind of good to see them struggle a little bit. Um, softball's getting ready to go. Sounds like we have an assistant coach. That's great. Uh, track practice started today. I think we had 73 students are signed up for track right now. So, wow. >> Lots of people for track. Um, girls basketball team qualify for the state tournament. This pep rally will be Wednesday at 2:30 and they're going to send them off Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Um, let's see. Elementary is participating in the heart challenge. They have their kickoff today at 2:30. Students are excited to learn hands only CPR and raise money for the heart association. Think they just want the

prizes, but they're excited about it. Um, I attended the Eastern South Dakota Perkins Consortium meeting today at Southeast Technical College. Um, SEC talked about some of their programs. They have lots of cool equipment programs now. So, that's kind of neat to see. Um, got some business leaders that were there talking about what they're looking for in future employees. and um showed off some of the technology they're using in building and trades and construction and some 3D stuff and 4D stuff and it's really neat to see how they can be building while still looking through a camera doing things and making sure things are level and so it's pretty cool. Um talked about some things schools are doing across the region that were kind of exciting and interesting. Some schools have really large CT areas. So,

I don't know if we have that right now, but Hamlet's building a house and their whole house is inside. So, and it wasn't a small house either. So, that was kind of cool to see. Uh eighth grade students are doing the flower babies unit right now. So, it's fun watching the eighth graders learn how to carry babies around while they're getting lunch and going from class to class and finding babysitters and things. So, it's going pretty well so far. >> Some resourceful ones. I even brought a stroller. >> Yeah. strollers in the hallways. >> Amazing to see the genetics of some kids. >> Some have figured out. Um, last week we celebrated American Education Week. Students read in the gym on Friday and it's always good to see the high school and elementary students reading

together in the gym. That went great. Uh, the week before that was FFA week. They participated in some games at the end of the day on Wednesday and then the pancake feed on Wednesday. So, we've had two straight weeks of dress up days. So, I'm glad those are over as we get into March. Um, parent teacher conferences are held in February on a beautiful day. Had a decent number of people show up. Elementary had about 98% attendance. Middle schools a little over 50% and high schools about 34 35%. So, decent showing for how nice it was. Um, let's see. March. Third grade is presenting their living wax museum on Wednesday and they're doing that from 1 to 2 because we have a pep rally that day now. Uh screening and registration for extra kindergarten students

in the Coleman School District will be held Wednesday, March 18th at the school. And what else do we have? Still talking with some teachers and Mr. chairman about a compass membership and determining what how often we use some of their trainings and things, but it's something we're probably looking at strongly and want to make sure student or teachers will use it and we use it for the tech department too. And that is maybe close to all that's going on in the school in March. >> Do we do field trips to Southeast? Like I know they'll take like students to SDSU. Do they do that to >> I don't know if they do. We had had Lake Area Tech come and talk to us and I'd be willing to take them. I think if on a

certain day I think they have some career days or something like that, but I think >> some ice. >> I know we've attended like scrubs camp at Mitchell Tech. I mean, there's been other ones. I don't know. >> Yeah, I know. Friday they have girls in science and I don't think we've ever brought a group or Coleman I don't think has ever taken a group there. There's about 1,500 middle school girls on campus that day. >> Yeah. >> It's not in our building anymore. >> Well, they talked about it a few years ago. They may have signed up. I think >> Yeah, I think someone should one specific year there wasn't much interest in whatever eighth grade class that was, but >> yeah. And I think it opened up a lot of eyes and there's

a lot of cool programs and >> Yeah. It's always this week. It's always spring break week, the Friday. >> And then what does the smarter balance system start? Is that April or is that the end of this month? >> So end of March to like first week in May is the window. Most of the teachers have signed up for their times kind of mid to late April when most people are testing. >> Do we have any pre preliminary numbers on kindergarten? >> 24 25 the latest number and we'll know more after the streaming >> streaming next week and then we still get some after that too >> usually. >> Yeah, we're at 22 for a while and then we've >> 24 25 now. >> And our senior class is pretty small, isn't it? >> Yeah.

>> 18. put the 73 students out for track count. The girls basketball team that's not technically >> Yeah, those were signed up. They went 73 today, but that's with girls basketball. It looked like a lot were in there, but not quite 73. >> Any other questions for Mr. Johnson? >> All right. Thank you very much. On the way, >> um have a health insurance meeting in here on on Wednesday. I've been starting to talk about business manager training for Tiffany and just looking at budget stuff. So, that's where I'm at. Any projections on health insurance that they have or they're usually pretty tight lipped until this meeting. So, yeah. >> Any other questions for Lan? All right. Thank you. board to report. >> I did the plaque meeting. Okay. >> Um getting down to the

end of those. >> We are getting down to the end. We actually cancelled um the April one because it fell on Easter Monday and we really don't have a whole lot to talk about. Um Mr. S got rid of most of the print items that he had. Um, the Sykes came in and kind of went through that and took what was relevant and got rid of a bunch of outdated stuff that he said and quote was older than our sites. So, wasn't of any value. So, we declared that surplus at no value. Um, one sticking point was the sick leave days that they have. um and not being able to carry those over. Well, when you leave one job and go to a new job with a new employer, you don't generally get to take

your sick leave days with you. So, um they're kind of talking about how how they can work with that because there's really nothing in policy or in their contracts >> that has anything to do with siftly. and Marus, who currently does the Medicaid reimbursements, would stay on to continue to do the Medicaid reimbursements and she would have a space still at Madison for maybe 10 hours a week, but I think he's already talked to the superintendent about that. We're talking about that and since you brought it up now I know at the sped conference just the it was just last week I know Don our um sped director um talked to and I can't even think of the sped advantage maybe there's a program that kind of does that which planner is going to do

I know she talked to the vendors at that so we're we're exploring to see what our options are and also I I think it's been rare that we've collected did more than $2,500 in a year. So, we are looking at different options as far as Medicaid reimbursement. >> And I made a I told Joel at the day of our meeting, the superintendent from Madison, I said it's something we would look into. I think she just wanted to know how much interest there was. So, >> yeah. And that was our next meeting will be May 4th, but that's winding down pretty gracefully. And then just a couple um points and just to piggyback off your conversation u Mr. Johnson about the Perkins meeting that you went to. Did that have anything about the Perkins grants that

were just awarded? Did that tie in with that at all? >> A little bit. Um, I just I would encourage I don't know if we applied for that grant, but I would encourage us to apply for that grant next year because it did go out to several small schools. It wasn't just the big districts. >> Smaller ones, the big ones. >> Yeah. I mean, and it was $10,000 to $50,000. >> Um, I mean, I think we could do a lot even with $10,000. Um, and I mean it's I mean I think that if it I mean it's a lot of extra work to write a grant. I know that. And I think that any of us sitting here would be happy to help with pieces of that that we could do. I mean we're we're

here for more than just a once a month meeting. And then from the last meeting we talked about the big pal Little Pal senior project. And what's funny is the next day I went back to work and I sat through some PD and one of the comments in that professional development was you must Maslo before you can bloom. Um Maslo's hierarchy of needs is you know meeting those basic needs your food your safety and then at the top of that is your connection your belonging and your relationships. And then when you get to Bloom's taxonomy that's how you learn. just for anybody who doesn't know it's starting with like basic recall and going up to the top which is where you create and synthesize and things like that. So I mean it just goes again

to the point where you have to have those relationships and those connections to be successful in education. So then going back to that big pal little pal I hope that we can keep that or something like that going. >> Um >> pretty sure we will. We found talked to some parents. They're like, "Oh yeah, this second or third grader is struggling with some things and we didn't even realize it, but they're like they talked about this big brother big pal thing and like they came home and they're like this is so cool and I got to hang out with someone and so yeah, there's I think success stories all the time and I think Mrs. Tamman's want to keep it going. So >> yeah, >> or or other ideas. I mean, you know, the buddy

bench at recess. I don't know if that's anything that we do or anything that we can do just to have help have help those kids have connections. >> You know, the earlier the better so they can carry those forward. >> That's that's all I have and that just happened to come up. >> Perfect. Thank you. Um I think the only thing that um I know Scott you and I had talked about people have had some questions about what is the next step kind of with the the athletic complex and I know um there have been some talks about annexation and we've reached out to our school attorney and I think he's talked to the city attorney and they work with ISG because they handle all the permitting and annexing or any of that that needs

to be done. Um, I know the city meets next week, I believe, >> I think on the 16th, >> and I think their attorney um was looking into it. So, we should have more information at our next meeting about what like the next steps would be or where we're at with that. Um, if I stole your thunder and you were going to talk about that, you can still touch on that later. But, um, and thank you guys for inviting us to meet with you because I do agree that meeting one-on-one is a lot better when you can have a conversation. So, we appreciate that and uh do intend to keep the lines of communication open. So, appreciate it, Scott. >> All right. Uh first thing I have is we did school just purchased a new

lift. So, now we have a scissor lift that will actually go everywhere we need to. >> Um I will look and once we get it's supposed to show up tomorrow. I'll see as far as the old one if we keep it. see what it's worth as far as if we would get rid of that. Uh the old gym lights have been replaced last week. Uh half of the units that were in there have been converted to LED systems, so I think we're going to take those and then put in the the old old shop part. Um replace some lighting in there, do some updates in there. Um I know we've talked a little bit about policies. I reached out to a group of superintendents how they've done it. One school said they did the two

policies a month forever, but they never got through all of them. Madison, um, correct me if I'm wrong. I know we talked about a little bit, Jen, they had they have three board members, which they have a seven board, um, >> member, but they had formed a committee with the superintendent, business manager. You're probably off the hook. We'll see how soon it start. um a couple board members and they went through like a section at a time and then they compared it to ASBSD's and if there were policies that had not changed based on ASBSD's recommendations they noted that they've reviewed them and then updated the date if there one there were ones that had significant amounts of change then they would do the first and second reading but it they were happy with doing

it that way so it doesn't just you know you're constantly ly doing it. Seemed like that was a a good way to do it. So, I um I don't know who would like to look at that. >> We used to do that when Tracy was here. Do the first reading and then have a second reading and then just keep doing that. >> I I get that, but we probably have, >> right? >> It would take us 10 years to get through. I mean, >> yeah, >> I don't think we ever got through all of them when we started them before. >> No. >> So, anyway, and if we get rid of plaque, maybe that would open up. we could do some kind of a policy committee or something like that, >> you know. Um I

do have >> I'm not volunteering even I'd be happy to >> a nice big binder of it, you know what I mean? And they're kind of broke down and and honestly, like I started pulling through and I I don't even know which ones they were, but there's a lot that are they're one paragraph, >> you know, there's stuff that hasn't >> I personally think that's the most efficient. Um, you know, nothing says we can't start looking at them before the next meeting. If if there's people that want to do that, um, there again, it would be me and business manager, two board members. So, think about that. Um, I did last week reach out to I'm going to screw up her first name. Her last name was Chantos with Sage Consulting. That's who helped us

with our last >> I don't know. It was a like mother daughter and there was others. >> She just got back to me today. They no longer do that, but she put me in touch with uh Eric at Pasque. >> Uh and so I'm kind of waiting to hear what services they offer. So I'm going to I'm going to get some more information on uh I kind of looked at their website and they help public entities with goal setting and that sort of stuff. Is there a reason we wouldn't go with ASBSD >> or do they not do that anymore? >> Um, I can look into that too. I just know that we went with that Sage last time and that's who I had checked with and >> um >> I think was it price

or something? >> I don't know. I don't remember. I don't remember anything. >> The price I for some reason I think it's around 2,000 but don't quote. >> I think it's worth it. Oh >> yeah. I mean they sure >> Yeah. I I think the the service that they offer as far as looking through things and making sure that you're not missing something is worth it. So there again, I will look into ASBSD and >> get information there. Um we're looking at doing looking at doing summer school again. However, with we've funded that with state and federal REAT money in the past. We have approximately $12,000 in state reap money that would have to be used before the end of June. So, we're looking at doing summer school the last week and a half of

June and then probably two days into July. Um, I don't have the exact dates and I would have to visit more with teachers to make sure that that works. But we would be able to fund three4s of it through state reap and then is that right? State. >> That's correct. >> And then the other four through federal. So, um it would get moved up a couple weeks, but just the way we would have to do the funding, um we would be able to offer it just because we have those >> feel like we get out so early that the end of June is still almost >> six weeks after we get out. So, it's like, you know, >> I mean, I'm always, you know, trying to have a break and I >> Yep. >> And

people are always going certain places. So, um March 18th I have my superintendent meeting. Um also I'm going to just visit with staff to try to get some dates for negotiations. I know things aren't finalized till April, but our next meeting is April 13th. So just uh you know talk to them Abby about getting some dates in April. Uh, and then the last thing with the girls playing at 12:45 on Thursday, um, we thought it would be hard to have any sort of school that day just cuz they were leaving. That was part of the reason that I decided not to have school. As of right now, my suggestion would be if we don't miss any more days, um, we've missed two days, have the teachers make up those two days. We're looking at new

reading curriculum, whatever. However, if we were to have another snow day or two, I would probably want to bring the students back that Monday and Tuesday and then the teachers make up some of those other days would be my I and who knows? I mean, we could get five days. If you talk about it, it we're going to get lots of snow in April. Like, you have to talk about it. >> I see what you're doing there. >> I'm not superstitious. I'm just a little stious. Anyway, those are my thoughts on that and a lot can change and um we have some flexibility and the staff I know it's been 3 years but we had a really bad winter and you gave them flexibility as far as making up days before school got out and

I know they appreciated that a lot. So, um for what that's worth, I think that's all I have. Are there any questions on anything? >> Questions for Scott? All right. Thank you. Next would be the consent agenda. So, approval of the previous minute meeting minutes, approval of bills reports, um approval of Tiffany Rolman's contract for business manager. Accept retirement of Amy Heammer and Cheryl Nelson. That's that's a sad one um for both of them. And then accept the contract for Sean Giggley as assistant girls softball coach. If anybody wants to pull anything for discussion, otherwise I just need a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented. >> They did. Cheryl and Amy both submitted letters to myself and the board. Um I read through them. I get a little choked up on them now.

So I don't know if but I have them here if you want to look at them. Okay. That might do the most justice. But I would on behalf of and I think you guys would say this the same thing like thank them for their >> absolutely >> lots of years of dedication to the district. So >> yeah, >> thank you for that. >> I'll make a motion. >> Second. >> All those in favor? I >> oppose name. Motion carries. Sean, you don't have very big shoes to fill. So, at least there's that. No, no, they were mine. I can say that. All right. >> Uh, next is approval of additional bills. I think there were some >> there the two two-page um document is there were referees from the month of February. You got the

first two pages and I had to reopen it because we had that change of that Friday game from Sou Falls to us. So, we had to hire some more. So, that's why there was a third page. So, you had twice that. And then the other single page is the bills that came in today. Any questions? If not, I just need a motion to approve the additional bills. Have a motion. >> Second. >> All those in favor? I >> oppose nay. Motion carries. Approval of school buses for after prom. >> We do that. I mean, nice thing to have. We do it every year. And the reason we do it is because it's tech after prom is not a school thing. So, I mean, um, >> we're the lucky drivers. >> I've done it how many

years in a row and I get tired of beating those guys at games and stuff. >> Do I have to not vote on that since my kid's a senior? >> No, you you wouldn't have to. >> Okay. Um but there again it's just one of those things that years ago we asked about it and they said the board needs to be aware that you are doing it and um you know the the senior class always pays the drivers and stuff. We provide the bus and fuel. So anyhow >> I just need a motion to approve the school bus use for the after prom on April 10th. >> All those in favor I >> Yes. Good. >> Um oppose. Nay. >> Sorry. >> That's okay. Motion carries. All right. So then the next item is um

executive session for SDCL 12521 for administrator evaluation and 12522 for student matter. A motion for that. >> I'll make a motion. Second. >> All those in favor? I nay. 627. Thank you guys very much for Okay. Um to clear us out of executive session 7:35. I need to go back to my agenda here. Wait a second. Should have done this. Okay. I got it. Okay. Item 11, consider offering contracts to administrators. Thank you, Dan. >> I would ask for a motion to offer Mr. Johnson a one-year contract. >> Motion. >> All those in favor? I >> oppos? Nay. >> Motion carries. And Mr. Mr. Hemmer is in the middle of a multi-year contract, so we don't have to make any changes there. Um, Tiffany has a new contract, so we will approve that um after

we do negotiations. >> Yep. So, her contract was in the packet. >> Yes. That is approved, but the we'll put the um salary on the Did we already approve that? >> We did. We discussed that. >> Her contract is done um for one year. and then Julie's we will finalize after negotiations. Okay. Um the next item is adjournment. Our next regular meeting is scheduled for April 13th. >> My gosh. >> Junior High. I was going to say, are we in track? >> Is there something that night? Baltic >> Baltic >> at three. Um, could we do the 15th? Wednesday, April 15th. >> Yep. >> That would be good for me, too. >> I track on Tuesday, so it'll have to be Wednesday. >> Okay. So, the next regular meeting will be April 15th, which is

a Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. in the library. I just need a motion to adjourn. >> I'll make a motion. >> Second. >> Okay. Hold on. I got to write this one. All in favor? by PSN. Thank you very much.
