[Music] Hello. Welcome to Calling All Kids. I'm your storyteller, Jennifer Temple. Welcome to all my friends that are home watching with us today. I have two very special guests with me here in the studio. Let's find out who they are. Who's our first guest in the beautiful pink dress? >> Emma. >> This is Emma. Good. And who's sitting next to Emma? >> My name is Connor. >> Hi, Connor. Emma and Connor, I'm so happy you're here today. And you look amazing in your costumes. Are these your Halloween costumes? >> Yeah. >> Yes. And Emma, who are you going to be? >> Glenda. You're a beautiful Glinda. And I think I can guess who Connor is. Connor, do you want to tell us who you are? >> Spider-Man. Well, you look great. And I bet our
friends at home are trying to figure out who they want to be for Halloween. Well, guess what, Emma and Connor? You are dressed up and ready for our Halloween stories that we're going to read today. So, let's get started. Our first book is called Behind the Mask. Does that mask look a little scary? >> No. >> Looks a little scary to me, too. >> not too scary for you, Emma. Well, let's find out >> about this mask and if it's scary to the characters in the story. Let's find out what it's all about. Behind the Mask. So, I'm going to put on my glasses. >> And here we go. >> Behind the Mask by Yang Su Choi. He's the author, the one who wrote the book and he also did the pictures. Are you ready?
Let's find out what's going on. >> I'm so good at making them. >> You're good at making masks. >> No. How? No. How How did you make it? Oh, I just Oh, how did the author make it and the illustrator? He must be an artist. I think that's how he did such a great job. >> We have artists in kindergarten. >> That's right. All right, let's find out what's happening in the story behind the mask. Kamine looked out the window into the wide night sky. In two days, it would be Halloween and the glowing pumpkin on his windowsill would light the way for all the wandering spirits. But he still hadn't decided what he wanted to be for Halloween. His mother had said he might find some interesting things for a costume among his grandfather's
belongings. Beim wasn't so sure about that. So, you two are lucky that you already know what who you're going to be for Halloween. Gee's mother brought two boxes from the basement. I'll leave these in your room so you can look through them in the morning, she said. And please be careful. Some of grandfather's things are very valuable. They're family treasures. Guine knew that his grandfather had been a famous dancer in Korea. Still, he wished his mother hadn't left the boxes in his room. I wonder why he didn't want the boxes in his room. Should we keep reading and find out? Heing got into bed and pulled the blanket over his head so he wouldn't have to look at grandfather's boxes. He wondered why they made him so uncomfortable. And then he remembered something. He thought
and thought. It was a memory of the last time he had seen his grandfather in Korea. Grandfather was old and didn't always recognize Keem. Sometimes he called him by his uncle's name. But Kahheem didn't mind. He liked to sit and talk to him. Gheem speaking English, grandfather answering in Korean. But mostly grandfather just smiled at him and that made Kaheim feel good until one night when Kahheem couldn't sleep. So he's at grandfather's house in Korea, which is a country way far away from the United States. So he couldn't sleep and he went walking down the hall and look, he peeked in a little hole. A light shone from grandfather's window. Kahheem got up and peeked through a hole in a rice paper door. Grandfather sat on the floor with his back to Kaheen. So grandfather
didn't see Kaheim first. He was bent over a box. Kaheen was happy to see that his grandfather was awake too and opened the door and went in. grandfather turned around, but he looked gruesome. Look at this. Is his grandfather. Does he look kind of scary to you? Looks a little scary to me, too. Keing was terrified and never told anyone about that night. After that, he didn't want to be alone with his grandfather. And now grandfather was dead. So, his grandfather was very old and then died. In the bright light of the morning, grandfather's boxes didn't seem so menacing. "I will only look at the pictures," Kaheen told himself as he opened the smaller box labeled grandfather's photos. The top layer were mostly pictures of Kahheem and grandfather. Kahheem as a baby in his grandfather's
arms. Kahheem as a toddler in the park with grandfather. And Kahheem with his aunts and uncles and cousins he hardly knew. But then there were some interesting pictures had never seen before. And he looked closely and there was his grandfather dancing. He was wearing face masks and special costumes. He was in a crowd and dancing. Kaheen had never seen these photographs before. So, do you think that mask that the grandfather was wearing were one of the masks that he wore when he danced? Do you think? Let's find out. Is this the mask he saw when he thought his grandfather was kind of scarylook? Let's find out about that. Gheem's curiosity grew. He looked at the other box which was labeled tall. "What is tall?" he wondered. Cautiously, he lifted the lid. There, neatly folded, were
traditional clothes like those worn by the dancers in grandfather's photos. Beneath the costumes were the masks. Some were smiling, some were frowning. Some were very fierce looking, but none seemed very frightening to to Kamine. Now, they looked like fun. So, you know what he did? He started to try them on. Would you do that if you got a big box with masks on in there and you could put them on? Very fun. >> Then he saw the mask that had frightened him that scary night back in Korea. He ran to find his mother. What does tall mean? Kamine asked. Oh, did you see your grandfather's tall? Tall means mask in Korean, she said. Now it all makes sense to me. Grandfather had been wearing a mask that night. So you were right, Connor. He was
wearing a mask that night because he was angry. >> He does. Does that He does kind of look angry, right? >> Or like a monster. I think so, too. brows are like like this. Like a bad person is like >> that's how right when our eyebrows kind of furrow in. It makes you look like you're angry or mad. You're right. I love how you noticed that. Uh-oh. Let's see what's happening now at school. At school the next day, everyone was talking about Halloween. Jimmy is going to be an alligator and I'll be a witch, said Emma. Guess what, Emma? You have the same name as a character in the book. What are you going to be, Kaheen? I will be my grandpa, he said. You mean you're going to dress up as an old man?
Yes, said Camine. That won't be much fun. You'll be too slow to follow us for trick-or-treating. The kids laughed at him, but Camine didn't mind. Going as an old man is not very scary, they teased. But Kamine knew better. Do you think they're going to be surprised when they see him? Is he going to look like an old man? >> Uh, >> let's see. >> Oh my. >> Kamine hurried home that afternoon because today was the day for trick-or-treating. So, what day is it? >> Halloween. >> 31. >> Yes. >> 40th. >> That's right. October 31st. >> It looks so much like a like a kid grandpa. >> It does look like his grandpa, doesn't it? >> It looks so silly. >> It does look silly. You think he's going to scare his friends? Let's
find out. Here we go. Kamine lifted the mask his grandfather had worn that scary night out of the box. He looked into its face and felt as if his grandfather was speaking to him. Then he put it on and tied the back black cloth attached to its rim at the back of his head. He looked in the mirror and saw his grandpa as a mask dancer. He moved around the room dancing as if his grandpa was doing in his photographs. So he's picturing it. He's his grandpa dancing around. Then he put on grandfather's dance clothes. They were a bit big, but that didn't matter. His costume was complete. Want to see what he looks like completely? Here he is. Let's see what his friends say. Kim mean called goodbye to his mother. Come home before
dark, she answered, and he slipped out of the house before she could see what he was wearing. When he got to the street, he heard whispers and footsteps behind him. What are you? cried a friend. I'm a masked dancer, answered Camine. Children in disguises surrounded him. Show us your dance, they said. Kamine started dancing. The children watched in awe. Do you know what that means if you're watching in awe? They were like, "Wow, he's really good. Do you think he's doing the same moves that his grandfather did?" >> Yeah, I think so. >> Yes. Do you see him right here? Uh, he's with the >> Do you want to trick or treat with us? The tuna asked. Here's the tuna. >> That's kind of a fun costume. The mask dancer nodded. He didn't tell his
friends that it was really him. They don't know that it's Kamine. So, they went from house to house singing their song. Trick or treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. Do you say that when you go out? >> Yeah. But it's No, >> I hope you don't. Do you say the b the last part? Smell my feet. It's the baddest part. >> But but at the ending, it's like a party where parts. Smell my feet. Give me something >> good to eat. >> If I don't >> Oh, no. Something else go after that. I don't know what goes after that. I hope you say thank you when someone gives you a treat. Do you think I >> Oh my goodness. I haven't heard that part before. >> That's silly. >> But my
feet give me something good to eat. If I don't, I don't care. I will put down your >> Oh my goodness. That is a silly part, isn't it? Let's see if they say that at the end. Let's see here. >> So, they sing trick or treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. The mass dancer danced. The children circled around him. And they filled their pockets with treats. Yummy treats. Let's see what happens now. >> Oh no, what happened here? It had suddenly turned from dust to dark. It was time to go home. Kamine didn't know how it happened, but he tripped on the hem of his coat and fell face first down on the floor. The mask hit the ground with a thud. Quickly, he took off the mask. The nose was
scratched, but he was okay. The mask had protected him. It's Kamine, the children shouted. He's the mass dancer. Yes, but now I have to go, he cried. He knew that his mother would be very angry with him. And what would grandfather have thought? Why do you think she he thinks mom is going to be angry with him? >> Because because she opened the box and she didn't and he she didn't want him to get go trick-ortreating. >> Okay. Well, she didn't mind that he went trick-or-treating, but remember she said to be careful with the treasures in the box. So, you were right about opening the box, Emma. Yes. But when he fell down, he scratched and and ruined it. Marked the mask. So, he's worried that mom's going to be upset that he ruined grandfather's
mask. Let's see what happens. Kamine's mother was waiting for him. Is that what you wore? Grandfather's dance clothes and his mask? She looked surprised then pleased until she saw the scratches on grandfather's mask. Camine's heart. >> Green hand. >> What? Honey, >> what's that green? >> Oh, just a minute. You're going to see. I love how you noticed that big green hand. Let's find out what that Did you notice that too, Connor? Let's see. >> That kind of looks scary. >> Camil's heart was beating fast. His face was as pale as the mask as he started to tell his mother what had happened and how he tripped and fell. Then the doorbell rang. Ding dong. Do you think What do you think that is? The green hand. There's a witch at the door. Do you
think? Oh, let's see. It looks like it might. Do you think it belongs to this person? Let's find out. Kamine opened the door and there stood all the children he had gone trick-or-treating with. So, it was one of his friends coming to the door. Something fell off fell out of your mask when you took it off, they said. The dragon handed so it was the dragon's finger. Good job. Close. The dragon handed Camine a piece of folded paper. Camine opened it. What does it say? The children asked. I don't know because it's written in Korean. Is this how you write your letters when you're in school? >> No. But if you're in Korea, that's how the kindergarten students would write. And all the students write like that. I don't know what it says. It's written
in Korean, said Kamine. He handed the paper to his mom and she translated it into English and it said, "Kamine, behind the mask, my spirit remains. I want you to have it. Time will pass and the mask will get old, but I will be with you always. Love, Grandpa." >> So, do you think is his mom upset that the mask got scratched? No. And Grandpa wanted him to have it and knew that things would happen to it. Is it? >> It's a letter from your grandpa, the children exclaimed. A smile lit up Kamine's face. Why don't you show your friends your grandfather's other tall? Remember, tall means masks in Korean. >> And his photographs >> that was like a pink head. >> Yes, these are the other masks that the grandfather wore when he was
dancing. They So the children went into his room and they tried on the masks and looked at the pictures and soon everyone was dancing wearing the masks. Later that night, Kamine and his mother hung grandfather's masks on the wall above his bed. I am happy that you wanted to be your grandfather today, said his mother. And don't worry about the mask. Grandpa would be happy that you found it. In his heart, Camine knew that was true. And do you want to see what it looks like in hanging above his bed? >> That looks like his dad above his bed. >> I'm glad that he's not scared anymore of it. Right. Because that might be a little scary if you don't know the story behind the mask. Did you like that story? >> Yeah. >> Behind
behind the mask. Very fun. >> Um um I know why they called it behind the mask. >> Why is that? because um he was behind the mask and the children didn't know it was him. >> Absolutely. And >> where what are those things? >> Do you want to see what these are? So, this is our next book called Here They Come. And what do you think? They kind of look like gremlins or little monsters. What do you think? >> They kind of look like little green trolls. >> Or green trolls. I kind of like that. And look at their teeth. I wonder if they're going to celebrate Halloween. Should we see? I think so. But >> yeah, >> sometimes I get a little scared. >> Okay. I don't think you'll get scared. These are kind
of fun fun silly creatures when you look inside. And there's a big surprise at the end. Are you ready? It's called Here They Come by David Castello. He's the author and the illustrator of this book. And it's always important to mention. Andrew, can I tell you something exciting? Do you see this here? This is David Castello, the actual author that wrote the book. He signed it. He used his autograph. We were talking about autographs, weren't we, Connor? And he signed a book. >> Yes. A little pumpkin or jacko'lantern. Love it. >> It's like pumpkin season. So, I know why they put it like it was close to pumpkin season. So, that's >> the water. >> That's right. >> That is >> That's a funny page. >> So, let's look at these and see what they
what they're called, Emma, that you were looking at. Here comes our chance for a Halloween fright. For this is the place every Halloween night where the scariest creatures are known to appear. And that's why the party is here every year. Where the path in the woods takes a bend in a turn round a circle of stones where a fire can burn and light up the scene. What's this? >> Look at this. Light up the scene by the old hollow tree. It's an excellent place for a party to be. Yep. They're getting ready for a party in the middle of the woods. Do you think there's real? Now, here's an up close picture. >> One like this. >> Yes. Look at them. Are they excited for the party? >> Yeah. Looks like it. >> But one
is like going like >> Yes. Look at all the different ones that are here. It looks like they're a family of these gremlins. Let's find out what happens next as they get ready for the party. Mom says, "You children are in for a treat. A good scare can knock you right flat on your feet and make your eyes pop and your heartbeat like thunder. She says that it's fun, but we do have to wonder. She says that a scare lets you know you're alive. Now listen, the guests are about to arrive. Let's see who else is coming to this party. Oh my goodness. Here comes the warlocks. Here come the ghosts. Here come the witches greeting the hosts. Then it's a scarecrow with corn for the cookout along with an owl who will keep a
keen lookout. He's going to watch for everyone arriving. Here comes some Listening to these funny creatures. Listen to their names. Here comes some hopping hobgoblins. Hobnobbling. >> No, I heard the um goblin. >> Have you heard that before? >> And with pumpkins for carving and apples for bobbing. Have you ever bobbed for apples? Put them in the water and bob trying to get them out with your teeth and not your hands. >> No, >> you'll have to try that sometime. >> I don't want >> werewolves arrive and ghouls and a bat. Then, oh my goodness, look at this one. The old hornabye. He's mostly a hat. Look at this. He's just a hat with two little feet. That's kind of funny. A walking bush enters and meets with a sprite. A bush. That would be
an interesting costume to be a bush. Then here comes a thing that goes bump in the night. Gwenlins come wobbling followed by trolls. An ogre comes scrolling with cinnamon rolls. Do you like to eat a cinnamon roll? I wonder if anyone's going to give you that when you go trick trick or treating. >> Did you Did you like see the like soda? He was like, >> "Yeah, they are silly, aren't they? Let's find out who the scary creatures are going to be. A couple of phantoms appear from thin air. They must come from someplace, but we don't know where. What's that? A marsh monster. Straight from the source. What's in his basket? Marshmallows, of course. >> Here comes musicians playing and singing. We even have music and singing here. Now this party is really swinging.
Look at all the fun things happening. >> And that kind of look like a >> kind of looks like a troll, do you think? With lots of makeup on. >> This This is so funny. >> He's a funny character. >> It kind of looks like a bird. >> It does. Oh, you very creative. >> And this is the ogre over there. And look at the scarecrow roasting his marshmallows. >> Oh, this is a funny one. >> That is all right. Let's take a seat and see what happens next. >> Oh, that's the warlock. A warlock is a man witch. Oh no, here's the pants and the fat. Let's see. Everyone's jumping to join in the dance. Hatless old corn bees. Nothing but pants. He lost his hat. Just his pants. Get your corn roasted or
just eat it raw. But you have to watch out if you're made of straw. What will happen if you're straw and you're near a fire? If you're made of straw, >> it'll break. >> Break. Could it burn with the fire? >> So, the poor scarecrow has to be careful. >> I already know about bottles. >> Are we ready? Now, the great ghost storyteller delivers a tale. He's going to tell a ghost story here, Emma, to give anyone listening the shivers until we're scared silly. And then comes the call. Are you ready? Here's the surprise. Here we go. Sitting up. Ready? The trick-or-treaters dressed up. See how they're all peeking out and looking at them passing? >> Yeah. Like, >> is that kind of silly? >> Um, this one and this one like scared. >> Yes. This is kind of backwards, don't you think, a little backwards? >> This one is like looking at these two. >> Yes. All right, let's >> How are they like um Is he like looking at the >> I don't think he can see them over there. They're kind of just walking through trying to go to the next house to get candy. >> I think they're like >> You ready? Here. Let's
see what happens next. I think that's backwards cuz usually the humans are scared of all those other creatures, aren't we? And now the creatures are scared of the humans. >> Oops. There we go. Do the trick-or-treaters go away? >> Yeah. But >> do you think the creatures are ready to come out? >> I see half of someone. >> Oh, yep. They're just leaving. Good. Good eye over there. So, they're like, I think they're gone. We can come out. So, they're going to tiptoe out. And what do they say? That was a fun scare. Our mother was right. cuz she said you were going to have a big scare at the end of the night. See you next year on Halloween night. >> I was going to say night. >> Wow. Do you think when we're

Are you ready to do a poem with me? So, we're going to make a big circle. Can you make a big circle? We're going to pretend that is a pumpkin. Ready? And we're gonna say pumpkin, pumpkin, round and fat, turn into a jacko'lantern. Just like that. How do you make a jacko'lantern out of a pumpkin? What do you do, Emma? >> Um, we >> Can I see if Emma? 032you know how to make a jacko'lantern out of your pumpkin? Do you want Condra to help us out? >> I know how to make one. >> How do you make it? >> You like put one tooth here and not one tooth here. >> So, do you carve it using a special pumpkin carver? >> You carve it. >> Yeah, >> cuz carve it means like you carve in something and that means like you cutting something. >> That's right. >> You can like put little bigger holes by. >> So, let's do that again. Are we ready? And we're going to pretend we're carving. So, pumpkin pumpkin round and fat turn into a jacko'lantern. Just like that. When you carve out your eyes, your nose, and your mouth. >> Yeah.
