next item on the agenda reports and presentations first one is student advisory Council presentation High School folks so if you can just introduce yourselves as you come up to the mic hi I'm Vanessa Thompson um so first we just have an update with winter sports they're wrapping up so the boys wrestling team just won their dual state champions um for division three and we have the boys hollison Ashlin hockey team is uh the combo team is sitting in 21st right now so they're due to make playoffs for division three and then girls and boys basketball um are due to have their final games um this Friday vers hopkington and then we have spring Sports registration just opened and those close in March and then we also have a lot of seniors making their decisions for
their Futures whether it be like a gap year or trades in military and we have a few kids already who um I think over I think over two dozen who have just committed to their colleges so um pretty exciting and then we have the finals uh for regular decisions were just made um so those applications had to be in by January 15th so also lots of kids waiting on to hear what they got back so hi I'm Sonia mudu Swami um first the NHS um talent show is coming up in March and it's always been a great opportunity for sh students to Showcase their talents as well as raise money for the club um we also have clocker Idol or had clock ridle in December um with a current senior winning first place um it
the club raised thousands of money for the emergency fund um also the a make a wish host did um jump for joy in the beginning of this month and um many families as well as children enjoyed the event which was great for the club um starting from last week we we've had sophomore seminars um talking about um Club career tests as well as Career Development um and since recommendations came out we had um we have class meetings with freshman sophomores and juniors um discussing course selections for the upcoming year thank you have a check do you have anything to add yeah so as she said uh cor selections are just getting started um and there have been class meetings with the sophomores Juniors and freshman is tomorrow and so it's just a really transition point
between now and and next year um February break's coming up so we're all looking forward to that get a nice a nice break um and also sats are coming up soon uh in March so that's kind of what what the upper class men are thinking right now I think that's pretty much it anybody have any questions for thank you we'll jump into Mr zilly first yeah sorry Aon this won't take long uh Pete there you go thanks coach can you uh just uh present to the school committee um the the purpose of the overnight visit yes so we have a couple uh tournaments coming up it's something we've done for uh about 10 years now uh the state tournament is coming up uh a week from Saturday and it's a Friday Saturday tournament uh we
usually get out Saturday night or Friday night rather um pretty late at the at the uh at the uh gym so it's like it's in Foxboro the first one uh we get out probably 11: p.m um that Friday night and the next morning weigh-ins are at 8 AM uh so just to kind of save time travel back and forth and um you know and and in anticipation of potential you know problems with weather uh that's something we've done in the past and the following weekend is the all state tournament which again is uh you know a quick turnaround it's in methan and uh we get out about 11:00 p.m. again on Friday night and the in the uh checkin team checkin the next day is at 8 am on Saturday so so there may be
some questions thanks Pete um there may be some questions because this was a late add to our agenda sure on Monday and I'm not sure everybody's had a chance to look at it but um let me just ask some general questions so you do you have two requests one for each tournament at this point is that Mark I'm sorry I can't see sorry yeah uh yeah so it's just the state tournament and the all state tournament okay so it's both y um any any questions that folks have kind of similar to what we do with a lot of the requests so um are you ensuring that uh we have the ability to identify any any students that student athletes that need assistance with with the cost or anything like that and making sure that we
have equity and the ability to do this I know on the on the Forum I think Kevin filled it out it said like $90 a student there's there's really no uh no fee to that so the the state tournament uh overnight stay is funded through our general our uh um sub account wrestling sub account which is done through fundraising the All State uh tournament overnight which requires less room stays is funded through the school and in the athletic department so um you know the the cost to the student athlete is just like concessions really during the day so um okay there's really no I know it said like $90 on that form but there's really no uh no extensive uh cost the kid awesome thank you anybody else and are the chaperons the coaches you
guys the coaches yeah so the first tournament we have the state tournament usually is a bunch more kids because there's more state qualifiers than all states so for the state tournament uh we'll be utilizing uh the Labor Training van to get us to Foxboro and you know in and around Foxboro during the weekend along with another coach that's driving so between myself Michael capanos who's the uh co-head wrestling coach and my father uh Nick ailly um were all you know all Corey and all through the arcs training all that stuff would be transporting through that that weekend and the following weekend it's just going to be me and um because there's going to be less kids so there's no need for a van or anything like that uh for the all state tournament in methu
great thank you okay have a motion uh I move to approve the wrestling out of overnight I'm sorry overnight travel request as that's both tournaments yeah both so the dates are they have they have two dates uh it's kind of kind of listed interesting so so the the first one the departure date is 221 returning 222 and then they have a 228 one and a 31 assuming those are both are covered in the okay all right thank you so Paul made a motion to you second okay all in favor thanks Pete good luck great thank you guys appreciate it appreciate it take take it easy next item on the agenda is the middle school schedule update and student presentation yep it's on welcome guys thanks for coming we're glad to have students here all the
time thanks for having us please just um feel comfortable no stress and uh you know you just introduce yourself and tell us maybe what grade you're in all right love to hear from you my name is Cole Will and I'm the president of student council and I'm in eth grade I'm Grady Clark I'm in the eighth grade leaon and I'm in eighth grade I'm Phoebe Smith and I'm eighth grade I'm Angela PLO I'm in eighth grade you guys have a presentation for us me when to click could you click it so our number one goal as a student council is to improve the school School Community some sub goals that we have are to create a new reward system other than clocker cash and to have a fundraiser for the eth grade class to use
at ashon high school um we plan to to improve the school environment we plan to have a buddy system to help encourage seventh graders to become eighth grade leaders and to have small group discussions where eighth grade student leaders will run social emotional learning meetings so far this year we have held a toy drive where over two thou 1,000 toys were donated and we have organized spirit days for every Friday we have also also refereed and set up a unified bot tournament and helped at the sixth grade orientation things we plan to do Necessities drive we hope to hold the week of March 3rd a spring cleanup at AMS reimagine the end of the year activities and continue spirit days every Friday thank you for your time and we are excited to continue our work
and carry on our Legacy as a student council thank you for coming in it's great to have you thank you anybody have any questions for our Middle School student council uh were some of those like the cleanup is is that something that's offered to uh the larger student body that that they can do for some community service or or or uh can you explain a little bit more about some of those activities I think that we're just going to plan to clean up things like our gym our gym floors need a bit of cleaning because they're quite slippery and so I think that the student council is going to try to just go out there clean the floors and maybe find a few other things that need some improvement awesome I just want to applaud
all the things you guys are doing to really um hpe up school spirit I think that you've done a really good job of engaging and in making uh some fun activities for your fellow students I hope and encourage you all to continue to do that when you get up to the high school thank you we appreciate it all right um Grady Clark is our project 351 Ambassador this year so he had his training so he's just going to speak to that briefly as well awesome so yeah I'm grd Clark um so project 351 is a nonprofit organization that where there are 351 eighth graders one from every town across Massachusetts that get selected for it I participated in launch day on January 25th uh this this year obviously um and what we did is we
went to the JFK library and we participated in a service project where we made care packages and food packages for th for the those in need and just on January 25th we impacted 34 35,000 lives um what we plan to do for the rest there's a spring service initiative where we don't we don't all meet up it's all the uh ambassadors for eighth grade um do have a initiative in their towns and what will what we have it's called cradles to crayons and there will be boxes set up in the middle school where all students can donate uh clothes to help those in need and once the project is over I will bring all the clothes that were donated after sorting them to a 351 drop off where then it will be distributed to those
who need them across the country great job thank you I'm glad to see that we're participating in that program it's a great program we hear some from that when we go down to the our school committee conference in November every year we hear about this program it's great to hear about it happening here thanks thank you yeah thank you hello I'm too short for this okay oh my goodness hello my name is Jay Barbo I'm in eighth grade and I'm in the ashin uh drama club it's already up okay um thank you thank you for having us here today um so we're here to talk about a drama club uh drama club is a place where many kids can be themselves without being judged and so far we have done three shows with our director
Mr langmar we have done uh The Miraculous Journey of Edward tane Allison Wonderland and the secification of Romeo and Juliet um to lots of kids in drama club it's a place to be to be fre themselves and not really caring what other people think hi I'm Charlie and I'm a seventh grader in drama club to run in drama club it feels more like a family than friends you make strong connections with people you might not have ever talked to before normally the three different or three grades don't interact very much at drama club though everyone talks to each other regardless of age whenever a new person comes to drum Club they they are welcomed by everyone and we try to help them feel comfortable hi I'm Callen Donald and I am in the seventh grade
as the higher grades and drama club we always try to make the younger kids feel comfortable and able to be themselves joining a club with older grades can be scary especially when the older kids are cold and don't interact with you that's why we try to be inclusive and make sure everyone is having a good time some people find drama club to be their safe space in a place where they can just be themselves hi I'm Samantha and I'm an eighth grader in drama club our amazing Drama teacher Mr Lang Meer always reminds us of a simple motto no one is less Ensemble is more everyone in the show is crucial to the succcess of it we think that this m is exactly what drama club is about a chance to gain more confidence and
take on an exciting journey to put on a production without being left out or feeling less then it doesn't matter matter whether you have a main part or a tree in the background for a show to work everyone has to work together thank you um thank you so much for having us today and I hope you guys have a good rest of your day thank you for coming in before before you walk away let's just see if there question nice try nice try anybody have any questions for our drama club when's uh when's your next production um we are starting after February break um middle of May okay should I say what it is or no think it's still secret still secret you're hoping to have the show in the middle of May middle of
may all right aw we can't wait for the big announcement yeah yeah thank you for coming in and it's great to see you living our core values and trying to create a great space for everybody thank you great job guys students you're all set thank you thanks everybody for coming in thank you maybe the art Club could come in sometime thank you bye guys thank you so much would you like to introduce yourself you're way more entertaining than I'm gonna be Aon LEL principal of the Middle School um here to give an update on where we stand with a new uh middle school schedule for the 2526 school year let me pull that up there thank you it's okay so I I'll uh before Aaron begins I'll just give a sorry a brief overview uh
so everyone is is on the same page and and it's as you know one of the um directors I I'd given Aaron when she became principal was we really wanted to to take a hard look at the middle school schedule to make sure um that we're meeting the needs of all of our students uh and and you know creating Equitable opportunities for students as well uh and to see really where we could go uh to make uh that schedule and Aon has spent uh the better part of her first year um working with faculty and staff um and looking at um schedule I know she has done a presentation to the board during a budget meeting and this really is a is that same type of overview uh where you know where we are today
uh with the expectation at March April time frame uh to really have something cemented uh for for her to begin scheduling for next year um so I will then turn it over to Aaron so everything here has been shared with staff I I think it's pretty clear we want to make sure that that everyone no surprises no surprises here no no no no for anyone watching no no secret announcements no um so just to give go ahead Jim uh a background on what the current model is um we currently have a sixday schedule with seven blocks in a day um blocks are 45 minutes with the lunch block being a 60- minute class um the reason it's a six day rotation is that all blocks except for DB block which is Discovery meet during the
lunch block um we have a f minute Home Room a 9 Minute advisory two minutes of passing time so a a team on team teacher um core content teacher teaches four sections of their core content and then has Discovery um world language and unified Arts teach five um different sections of of all three grades um special education teachers um have their support block during Discovery a reading section and then they co- te uh or they have sub separate classes for their other blocks reading Title One and El teachers are scheduled kind of on an odd I say kind of on an as needed student basis because part of the limitation of the current schedule is they're locked into into certain blocks um and then teachers have two open blocks um a day one is a
prep block and one is either a Duty or meeting block um so scheduling concerns that were presented sort of to me and then also were discovered in my first um few months of of being the principal um really was the concern Jim had had brought up is are we meeting all students needs in in the most effective way um Discovery block came up um in in conversations from people and you'll see in this as both people who really love it and value it and people who feel as though it is really not being used effectively um I can say just from my viewpoint I do think it's an equity issue and how it's used by both teachers and students um some are giving direct instruction during it um some are not um some kids are
are doing authentic learning some are reading or doing homework um so the effectiveness of it for sure is not there every day and it is a 45 minute block every day in every kid schedule um the data uh we we for sure right now have gaps in that need to be addressed in and in our current model it's tough to make sure all students are getting what they need individually um particularly our reading um scores uh and then get getting the stem standards to students right now and the way that we're delivering it is not is not meeting our student needs um currently they get their stem standards through the UA wheel um and I can't even say all students get approximately 30 stem classes a year um to cover the sixth seventh and eighth
grade stem standards and don't test on them until end of eighth grade um our sped elel and Title One Services compliance is definitely a challenge that was apparent in July when I took over and spent a lot of the summer rescheduling a lot of students to make sure that when we were in compliance numbers wise um and really found that having one block a day essentially of support is is not optimal to meet student needs um and then the goal would be to look at when we create something new can we create intervention timer blocks where we're delivering um interventions to kids through the school day on an as needed basis um in that tier 2 model like through RT mtss to to to close a gap or to reinforce and then to let them
move on to something else um that's on this one so in addition to just the anecdotal and having teacher meetings um looking at data um we we have some growth we need to make um I already data from both last year and fall from this year shows our percentage of students that are three or more grades behind growing between Sixth and eth grade in both reading and math um we do I will say in a as a positive have excellent growth right now showing for our midyear I already Diagnostic in reading and math a really really strong growth um but it's it's still it still exists that there the Gap is growing and not getting smaller between Sixth and eth which is obviously not what we want to see I know Mike presented on um
the mcast accountability data back in October so some of that data obviously is a concern and we want to be able to address it um with a schedule change and then get gaps are increasing specifically for our students with disabilities our El students and our high needs students so looking to to fix that so so Aon just want to confirm uh I think think what you were saying you know that the number of students three more years behind uh is growing but I'm assuming we're not seeing a a a lack of growth or shift of of all students but we're seeing some that are making the right progress or a lot of progress and we're so it's that Gap you're talking about that we continually talk about we want to close the gaps we're actually
not just not closing them right now we're seeing that the Gap is widen part of the reason to address this yes yep so faculty and staff it was really important to me to to get as much input and Survey as I could um so I given faculty and staff several kind of scheduling surveys and have put out that this is the opportunity for voice and choice and people to be able to share their um their thoughts and feelings and in the participation has been has been really really strong I can say that so I do feel like when I'm getting results I'm getting it from from the majority um these were kind of the key takeaways from the initial survey back in the fall on what what faculty feels about the current schedule they are
really wanting to keep a rotation keep the team model they felt like the length of class the 45 minute is is about right but we're not opposed to something else um very mixed feeling ings on Discovery it is either love or I'm I could do without um there was you know initially a really strong ad advocacy for advisory um we'll talk about that in a second and some some changes that might happen with that um everyone agreed there's really no need for home room it's just an extra transition in the morning um they'd rather kids just go right to first block um and then I will say as a positive was in the even that initial survey there was a lot of openness to change as long as it's done in the right way so
so that was really great so in talking with faculty and staff and then looking and talking with other principles Middle School principles around the state um it became pretty clear that it's not necessarily I would say a schedule change that that is needed I think of schedule as like the day-to-day Logistics of a schedule not so much as um what what we're likely going to do um the blocks aren't an issue the times aren't an issue um it's really looking at ways that we can during the school day work on closing those gaps and providing some instruction to all students um to to meet those needs so in speaking again and looking at models of other schools who have gone through a change really looking at taking that Discovery block and adding a grade specific
core content um to try and and deliver that those those skills that we know students need so recommendations that I made um were that sixth grade um currently have one Ela class that we would give them two one block would be focused on reading and the other would be focused on writing seventh graders would get an engineering class which would pull the stem standards out of the UA out of the unified Arts wheel and have them delivered all in seventh grade and be able to work in some math um reinforcement in that class and then eighth grade Spanish would go on team um additionally the current way we run our unified Arts is in this pairing of classes and we call it a wheel um and it makes scheduling really inconsistent for teachers and kids
so a UA or a wellness teacher might have 16 sections of kids in a given semester and they might see kids on Monday and then not see them again until Thursday and then not see them again until Wednesday there's really no consistency in they'll see him two times in a rotation but what those two days are isn't consistent um so really trying to find a way for our unified artarts to be delivered in a in a consistent thorough way so that when they start a project on Monday they're still working on that project on Friday and they haven't had to spend significant class time what did we do last class and and really being able to keep those um those classes moving as well so this is what the core content would look like per
grade um sixth grade a reading math science social studies and then writing seventh grade grade the ELA Math Science Social Studies and engineering and then e8th grade ELA Math Science Social Studies and Spanish those would be their five core classes um students would still carry seven classes so that then opens up two blocks in their day for UA um Wellness blocks which right now they have um one block of UA wellness and one block of their World Language um eron question just you made it way you stated something on the last one you said Spanish is done on teams is that going to be delivered differently than the other stuff or or is that just so right now our our world language teachers are not on team because they teach all three grades and so
a a big disconnect is in those team meetings those grade level team meetings so eth grade for example the world language teachers are never a part of them um they very rarely get to connect with the other content teachers to hear how kids are doing in their classes and what supports are working for students so um with the changes we had discussed making to world language um e8th grade will take Spanish one um and they then those teachers that are teaching eighth grade Spanish will be a part of the red team and the blue team so they'll be able to have that team discussion and be able to support students in their world language class the same as their science teacher will be supporting them great yeah yep I wonder if you could actually give
a little more detail two questions one um so the writing and Engineering is not going to be part of not on team they will they will be yeah so the the can you explain a little more detail how um the other two blocks that a student has how they'll be used yeah I'm going to get to that to if you want to wait and then I can clarify if it's not clear when I get there just because it might make more sense once I once I get there um so how do we add core content teachers to each team without needing a bunch of new teachers um currently we have 2.5 teams per grade we have sixth grade two full team and then one team of two teachers one who teaches AA and social studies
and one who teaches math and science um and then seventh and eightth each have two full teams and then they have a split team um where five teachers have half seventh grade half eighth grade four teachers excuse me um full teams have approximately 90 students and the half teams have about 45 to 50 so right now when you take the 90 and you divide it by the four core classes that's about 22.5 students uh if we move to two teams with five teachers on each team um it would make class sizes about 23 per student um we're going to use luckily our current half team teachers to staff the new courses um Andor to fulfill retirement roles they might move within the building um to fill those roles but um but are able to retain
our teachers who are doing a fantastic job um and and help have them help us with this transition in in some curriculum instruction so it's great so how does it imp so hopefully this helps to answer the the UA um so how it would impact students is they would have their five core classes based on grade and then they're going to have two blocks open up in their schedule for their UA and wellness um again to try and deliver that consistency we looked at a lot of models probably almost eight models of how do we we'll have to go to a 7-Day rotation because we want all classes to meet during the lunch block now so how do we pair things and have Equity still well we don't because it's seven times in a rotation
and so we really settled on looking at having classes meet consistently per quarter instead of for a half a year two times a rotation or three times a rotation having a class meet from September to November every day um and then when we did the numbers out we were like this actually gives them a lot more class time um to to work our Wellness in those will meet every day for a full term in alternating terms so a student would have Wellness in term one and term three or in term two and term four and it would be their health and wellness right now they have approximately 60 Wellness classes a year they will have 90 um all other uas right now have about 30 classes a year they will have 45 um so it
will allow not only for the consistency of instruction from day to day but will allow for more class time per subject for students to have so student might have Mark you know Wellness in term one art in term two Wellness in term three drama in term four and then their other block they might have General music and they might have computers and they might they it would fill with the other four electives um right now we will keep um a World Language teacher to do an introductory to World language in sixth and seventh grade as part of that so they'll get a term of that um and that teacher will also teach the section of eighth grade French that will remain next year um what this will also do is allow ban and chorus to
meet every day all year long um it will allow support BLX to not be limited to just deblock or Discovery block throughout the day um and it'll allow our ability when we look at kids to group them based on need um so a part of our issue right now in reading for example is you have a student who requires reading Services who might only be need some comprehension work and be slightly behind grade level in the same section as a student who's working on decoding or or phonics and so it's very challenging for the student to be able to service both of those those kids in the same block and give them the level they need so our goal will be to two group students based on need and have the ability for them to
be able to move as needed throughout the year when they are ready to move on to maybe a different grouping or level yes ask question so in terms of the support block that you're talking about so would those be during the same blocks where the kids would have the unified arts or Bandon chorus so in other words if they need support they don't have access to the it's not that they're not going to have access they will still have access um they will have a block or uh instead of two they might have one block of UA wellness and one block of support and or when we look at our um our grids we don't have there are some students of of course who are going to need academic support every single day um but
really the special education department is working throughout this spring to identify when we look at academic support and what it should be doing which is working on students IEP goals executive functioning skills and things like that it should not be homework time it should not be that what are students truly needing so maybe they don't need it every day maybe they need it three times a rotation or five times rotation and we would have the ability then to pair them with another UA and get them into something not on an everyday basis but still get that that class that they are wanting to get into is is part of what you're looking at in terms of I don't know restructuring may be the wrong word but for support right looking at what can we do
different for those pushin supports as well too because some I would imagine I mean obviously depending upon the IEP and what it looks like but if some of that support can be delivered differently and what that might look like as and that obviously will not be appropriate for every kid I know but correct won be and we're and we're doing a lot this spring right now to evaluate students who are receiving reading services and really trying to level and group them out our reading specialist learn Noble has especially in the sixth grade when the two because they're going to have that and so there's ways that we can look within the schedule as well to say example sixth grade does the student get the writing and then their reading is their special ed reading instead
of so we're going to have a little flexibility with with with some of those additional core classes as well to look at what a student needs and how we can best meet those needs yeah how well integrated is is like band and stuff now with this schedule as opposed to band right now meets three times a rotation all year long chorus only meets in the second semester two or three times a rotation so are and I know currently they then lose a significant amount of opportunity in other areas they do yeah just help address yes yes that's the goal and and we know we're going to last slide will will hit on it we know we're going to run into Logistics of specific kids who have specific profiles who need and we're going to have
to look at those on a case-by Case basis to figure out what is best for those kids yeah so we we then got to the point of saying this is what we think and we put it out to faculty again what are we wanting for the dayto day um do we put out do you want seven blocks a day do you want six drop one five drop two what we I was open to anything um they very much felt like for the middle school age group that the 45 minute class is the appropriate length um you know the 60-minute lunch block for some subjects is long and and tough to get through so so adding in um you know making all block 60 Minutes every day see even with a drop was they were not
in favor of this was the overwhelming seven blocks a day adding a day to the rotation again so that each block meets during um during that lunch block which is a little longer um is what they were overwhelmingly wanting as a as a teaching staff um we are going to eliminate The Home Room um we did then have us another iteration of voting because the advisory was still kind of up in the air and what we wanted to do with that um and it is a transition that that there's a lot of movement and not everyone always makes it to where they need to be so to minimize that movement they're going to have advisory so have their break and snack snack time but they're going to have it as an extension of their second
block of each day so they'll be with one of their own teachers without teaching there will still be a bell to Signal this is now advisory class is over um but we'll allow time for the teacher to have conversations with the kids that they have in front of them every day that aren't about their content that are hopefully about something else um and it eliminates again another transition of movement and and and things like that um we added a minute to passing time between each class because if you've been in the Middle School two minutes is not long enough to get really anywhere so hopefully that will help with some of the the tardiness um and then you know I was said to them at our last meeting we will continuously review the day-to-day Logistics
and and we can re-evaluate changes as we as we need to and then this was the last slide I presented at the faculty meeting um there are still like I just said a lot of logistics that are not figured out yet and won't be until we actually start plugging students in and see where we have some issues we need to figure out um my goal will be to start running at least the back end of things by mid-march um and you know we're we're going to get to a point where someone says this doesn't work and we're going to figure out how it works um the the focus of every decision is what's best for kids so student centered decision making um departments have had and have had and are going to continue to have
a lot of discussion about what this is for opportunity and curriculum um and I was really clear that these new classes do not only impact the sixth grade reading seventh grade engineering because we are adding Reading Writing to six that impacts the following year seventh grade ELA and then the year after that eighth grade ELA and how is the stem class going to impact maybe eighth grade science and math over time so um people are coming with their ideas their questions and their concerns um regularly and we're talking things out um and I just have emphasized it's going to be a change for everyone it's not just these few few teachers that are taking on a new class um but I will say those that are have been fantastic about diving in going to PD
already to try and figure out the best way to make these changes happen so um and change is scary especially when it's good for us so other questions folks have for eron I don't have a question I just want to say I'm so impressed with how you've just been calm and methodical no you have like the outside like I mean I sit on the the site Council and you've been just very transparent and I I just commend you for doing this because it's going to add so much to what the kids are learning and I'll tell you my sixth grader was pretty psyched he's missing two blocks of vaa which is a good sign that you probably need it so uh I just I just want to thank you because this is a hard thing
to do in your very first year as principal so and you've done it really well thank you thank you and I will say I I the goal for the ELA will not necessarily be for them to feel like they have too totally separate I I'm just just to address that because it was a concern that came up um and the ELA teachers are are going to be really thoughtful about what does this look like and and are we using the text we're reading in the reading to do the writing or are we not connecting and so I think there's there's a lot of thought going into what it's going to look like for kids and I think the impact that that we hopefully see long term is is going to be great is what I
hope I'm excited about the seventh grade stud too that's great with eighth grade mcast and what even you know whatever it is it's great yeah consistency you have some pull no just uh mid March huh yeah I have I pass training on Friday yeah it's uh just going to be is it is it going to be hey we're starting it on whatever oh we're not starting the schedule this no no no meaning the scheduling for next year running the schedule running meaning like yeah running meaning literally running next year's like backend like plugging everyone in to tryig figuring out next year yes I'm sorry just to be clear we are not changing the schedule in March it says running the schedule in mid March yeah well running the schedule for us the terminology have at
the high school we would continuously we would be putting students in abach mentioned earlier students start to choose their SCH right Aaron at the high school they would be running the schedule for next year already this year I thought I was missing was like you've done a lot of work if this you're you're able to do this no definitely not staff Poli I'll just say I wanted to Echo you Marcy's comments and is I think you took what has been a challenge for a long time and it seems like you created a huge opportunity for our kids um and accomplished a lot of different things all of which are positive thank you I I uh congratulate you on that work and you know everybody who's involved in including your faculty members yes I'm sure there'll
be bumps things things that need to be figured out but it looks it looks like a lot of progress I'm sure we'll hear it from from Jim if there are but as as you look forward and maybe you won't know thoroughly until you get into the bones of what you're going to do next year if there's you foresee anything that we might need to look at that you can foresee us needing to help support you in this or things that are kind of close or or whatever are things from our that we should be thinking about from our lens is now that You' gotten to the point where you're going to look at implementation how you implement it um is there anything that we should be thinking about to to help help you in this
I can't think of anything off the top of my head I don't know if you can this your only opportunity for yeah I I will come back if I and um but I think we're at a point now where like I said until we really start plugging it in and then seeing it play out um which I have been clear is going to take a while too like it it's going to take us a year to see how things I anecdotally it'll be sooner than that but um but no I can't think of anything at the moment but Jim might have something no I would just say we we spent a lot of time just sitting down Mike Chris Aaron myself looking at the schedule looking at the individuals looking at the human capital that's
needed uh how are we going to reallocate um folks within the building do they have the skill set um you know I'm happy to hear you know and say that that we've got folks who are part of the half teams who are certified at different levels uh where we have retirements in different schools where they're able to they're really good teachers and we want to hold on to them uh where they're going to be able to transition to to a different school for us and and that's a great thing and and and and so we've added two positions if you will uh you know a health and wellness position uh as well as fulltime making band full-time or Another music person full-time um but it all came within the structure of of the folks that
we had through retirement through attrition uh through people leaving uh so we've been pretty cognizant about that again maybe in a year we might come back and say h uh the the uas we need additional support um but again we were fortunate with a um our world language things have sort of I was going to say don't say it don't say it settled in a little bit um since January 1 and uh having someone who can teach that French and continue uh and have that and and have part of it in the UA be an a an exploratory if you will or introduction in years to come as well so it's not just folks on the eighth grade level great the one thing that does occur to me is that um some of the the
elements that you talked about are really new to our curriculum structurally like the engineering program and traditionally we've we have voted to approve curriculum changes and we talked about the French okay yeah you will one thing in terms of kind of what comes back yeah so that was my only thought but I was like I don't know if you want to sell it's going to be standards based right whatever the standards are with in massachus but but if you if you go back and look at um goal number three in the midyear cycle Aaron will be coming back for the approval of the committee for the schedule change because we are changing uh the structure of some curriculum yes yeah and if fact my just quickly some of the the changes of what we're talking
about for the in curriculum instruction assessment are really exciting to and to togy back Erin's potential needs or wants or things with that that we might all want um you know it's something that Chris and I have been talking a lot about in terms of making sure that we are budgeting appropriately for the amount of uh professional work that's going to have to happen in this summer right uh particularly around curriculum development right so right now we know that we are going to be developing some programming for ELA specifically about this new writing track and and how are we going to be able to create a scope and sequence and and do we need to do some piloting of some materials for that and and also what's this stem class going to look like so
there's going to be some extensive work that has to be done in the summer around curriculum development um but we've we've budgeted appropriately to make sure that we're we're ready for those things and those are going to be the priorities for all of our our our work that that happens for for our staff this well you've had such an outpouring the past couple Summers of teachers that really wanted to dive into some of this so hopefully that will continue yeah but this again we prioritize things and this year this is this is going to be priority number one is making sure we're ready to go and we've already had these conversations um in our in our curriculum vertical meetings as well right so right so I just have a quick question for you to you
had mentioned and I and the reason I'm asking because I'm I'm guessing that um at the next aspack meeting parents may ask me about this so in terms of you mentioned that you know the special education um coordinators and teachers at the middle school are looking at at at how to and restructure is probably the wrong word but how the services are going to be delivered in this new model right and and based on how you've explained it I can see a lot of areas where there there's opportunity for differentiation or services to be delivered um but differently than they are now right like you said change is scary and so um can you just talk a little bit about what has that process looked like and have those teachers kind of dove in a
little bit are they do they see the vision for how the services will be delivered and be able to meet the needs of the student that they currently have on their case yes is the answer um so I've met with Heidi Mani at the mindes to be able to kind of have these conversations with Rising sixth grade parents during spring meet IEP meetings to say this the middle school is going through a schedule review we're not exactly sure what it's going to look like we're going to put these times of services in the grid for now but just be aware and I guess people have been really receptive um Kyra has been having the similar conversations and the Liaisons that the middle school have been having during meetings that have been going on um to
explain these are changes that are going to happen and then I think Brittney Hawkins and I have been working and going to the legal side of things to say we are we are we went there ahead of time saying we're making a schedule change at the time we went we said we're not sure if it's going to be block time changes or things how does that look and we got the reassurance that they will work with us to put out a letter to parents to explain changes in Service delivery and that we will have those conversations with indiv the hours on their grids may look different the thees are changing cor yeah and I think once I was able to explain that our goal especially for I say something like reading or support to be
grouping kids based on need it made everyone kind of say okay this does make more sense so that when I'm giving that instruction I have similar need in front of me versus just this wide array that is really hard to to to prepare for right yeah yeah yeah and I want to emphasize I think Aaron has done such a great job collaborating with with Britney as well as Christie right I mean I think looking at our L Services as well as our special education services at the middle school and actually all the schools trying to to revamp those uh had to be given a lot of consideration before the schedule was even built yeah so it's it's an ongoing conversation for sure and I met with it's all been part of the convers and I
I actually met with Chris and our El teachers today to talk about some of this and their grouping ideas for next year as well um so on the Forefront is is in I've always scheduled when I did the high school s you schedule students with the highest need first and that's how we will model that off this year as well well I just want to add to the Horus of compliments you guys have left no stone on turn and I'm very impressed I mean but with the recognition that there may be Stones you don't know about yet you'll we turn them over we pass absolutely absolutely but no you you've done a great job thank you for all your anybody who's implemented anything of any scale knows that you don't know what you don't know
yet that's right thanks Aon so Jim just question for you um just to confirm where we are in the plan so the half teams we initially funded with temporary funds uh at the outset at the outset with the plan to bring those into the operating budget I believe we're there we have we have we have I'd have to go back because we've moved folks around throughout um the three years of the SR funding uh but our goal was to bring some of the half team members at slowly at a time bring them into the operating budget yes and or funding through other revolving not just but it's sustainable 100% sustainable that's and again the attrition from retirements um as well as again if you looked at the total number of Faculty at the middle school
I would say we're probably reducing the total faculty number by three however um they're there's a retirement someone from the half team can go into that position so we didn't need that individual right or the schedule gets the efficiency where we would need one individual but we have a retirement and they can corre exactly all right why don't we uh move on the next thing so um Jim this was your your contract you know we went to Executive session um we realized after our discussions that the agenda only covered our strategy didn't cover talking with you um so I'm going to talk with you after this meeting rather than than sort address it um in the agenda item um Mid superintendent's midcycle review is the next item on the agenda and I will confess my
link wasn't working on this um Pi them on the wrong account and all um don't remember whe there was any backup material associated with this there was okay um typically what we would do I think at this point in time is we do a check-in with Jim right and it's sort of that mid year of look at the goals look at the um look at where things are are there things that people are concerned about are the things that we want to give Jim General feedback on where we want to efforts made you know from where we are to the end of the year focal points it's not a formalized valuation cycle check in um so because I haven't been able to look at the back backup I don't know whether um put out as
so this is the immediate opportunity just up that I don't know did you talk to Lori about that yeah no I mean it's it's sort of um we can do either or to me right it's sort of i i in the backup documents that that I linked for each goal I would highlight red areas that we've accomplished so far and and you know I got there's probably of the seven goals there are two that that are lagging in my opinion it doesn't mean they won't get accomplished just means you know we focused a lot on like for instance goal three was was the middle school schedule it's been a lot of work um and and I would say that will 100% be accomplished we're well on Target in terms of the check-ins for that so
let let me ask this in general terms and you cut me off if like this all barent because like said access document yeah um is there anything that we had set for a goal that you feel like we not on target to hit by The End by whatever the designated time frame was I I don't think so I think I mean Mike and I have had this conversation about goal four which was the uh learning walks and evaluations but but Mike is working with the aea currently looking at evaluations material uh so we can bring that forward to um the school committee at some point because that is part of theal documentation Andor we're looking at doing learning walks will begin and we'll have it accomplished by the end of the year typically this at
this time of year we would have had already one done maybe even two coming into March but but we'll get there I'm not worried about it that's the one that lagging Beyond but I'm not concern Mark just yeah just to make sure uh I think typically how we've done it is we've we've had it on the agenda so there's a check like hey hey what is the current status then we would individually check in with Jim if we had any anything and and kind of that it we might have if we feel there's something else to to report on have again on but is that that that that what we're thinking we're well my memory is that that usually the first time we talk about this and I don't remember that we did at our
last meeting um Lori sort of says something like you know we'll put this on the agenda for next time people think about um whether there's any feedback we want to provide to Jim and that can be sort personal inquiry um oneon-one and that's certainly fine or it can be a discussion at this this table um and the midcycle review doesn't have a deadline associated with it right so you know I think in In fairness to Jim certainly if there's any feedback or or or concerned about that sooner rather later because we're we're the mid year of the midpoint of the school year just passed a couple weeks back but we're certainly well past sort of the midpoint of the fiscal year things are cycle um so I don't I don't want to protract the discussion
or what have you but I guess let me let me ask this is there anything anybody wants to provide feedback or get more on anything more than what you I think the the updates you shared and kind of the the highlighting Where You Are with different things I think that was helpful to know just in terms of the progress and and and and how you're doing and I I think it I don't have any El okay I mean the only thing I'd say is if you think something gets off track as we're going just let us like 100% yep and I don't but I this was great I don't think we'll be I think we're going to be fine the one the one there there maybe a couple stumbles and and you know more Stones
think about more Stones well just know I mean there are a lot of highlights in these think about thei right um you know the statement of interest to the msba we're engaged in that process and we were were had talked about having a feasibility study of of we had one vendor and they couldn't get the work done in the amount of time we actually had asked them to get it done so we've got to go back and rethink about how we want to approach that but I'm also I had um emailed Michael and the select board say first of all I can't even submit anything unless the select board says we agree to allow you to submit something to the m even the SOI doesn't mean we're committing any money or anything it's just they
agree and then I have to bring it back here so the goal is still by Mar April to have something to be able to present to the MS we're on track for that um but in terms of having that the i w I don't want to call it a fusibility study because the last fusibility study was a million dollars this was just a give us an idea of what we have with pway and Warren and how structure this from a capital what does it look no one could meet our needs is that a fair assessment no that it's a fair assessment we have it back out um right yeah turn your mic on C sorry vendors started uh the we we put a new bid out vendors um actually had a more traction now um
com through I think at least 20 inquiries over the past couple of days for the past day um basically how the how it gets published uh uh essentially on the government's webbsite so yeah no I mean so we'll see so why I suggest this um let anybody else has other comments seems like people are feeling pretty good about where we're at um if anybody has any particular concerns or or just thinks more about it let's by the end of the week by Friday reach out to Jim you're you're around you're yep yep reach out to Jim and and just you know have a one on one if that leads to anything people want back on the agenda um let Lori know goes back I think we put it on there to kind of bracket make
sure hey this is the introduction and then kind of bound people to you know this is your opportunity for us and we remembered into it earlier this year last year was end of March right so as long as we're not the end of May when we're doing correct all right uh Paul you got the warrant approvals uh me Skip and come back no get it won't come up as a preview has between January 23rd 2025 and February 12th 2025 I Paul Kendall authorized my my signature tables an the amount of $792,500 369 volume expenses are $389,962 in Grand expens $703 thank you um all right uh superintendent report Jim anything else you uh yeah just a couple things one um you know alluded to the budget in terms of where we are um you know
we're still working through the numbers and really working through the 2425 numbers to see where we're Landing currently uh as we're know in February we've got four months to go uh in this fiscal year so we've got a pretty good idea with incumbrances and and to see where we're going to be land with our revolving Eon which is is important because that will help us then potentially offset some the deficit that we're working through right now and and you know we're just trying to clean that up and hopefully we'll have that together it looks like March 1st I think it is is the first uh tri board meeting Comm is that confirmed this that is confirmed as of today uh I I sent the invitation out uh and Yanda did get back to me because
I had asked about yeah the first that's Saturday I had asked about potentially coming before the select board for the msba for so SOI she said well that's a great thing to bring up on the first so I'm making the Assumption um that the first will be the date we have um and I also think you know it's it's um you know important to note uh that it's going to be a challenge this year for sure but I also I I hold out some hope that 2425 you know will relieve some of the pressure not like it did last year but certainly some impact and we'll we'll have a better handle on that uh in the next um big is next week as abash mentioned before think needed had a lot of sickness a lot
of flu running through the schools I talked to our nursing staff you know early in the in the fall late fall it was a stomach virus and this is truly a flu that with fever and Mike's dealing with at the house with his daughter uh it's it's just going through so um I think that's pretty much all I had Mike uh winter I ready Diagnostics are complete at this point uh the deadline was the 31st so those are all done we've already started the data analysis phase of that Aon you know alluded to the fact that we've seen some really nice growth um already in our Middle School data uh we spending a lot of February break kind of pouring over those numbers to see how we're doing throughout the whole District but preliminary data
shows some some nice growth from our our fall to winter uh for Math and Ela for I um you know obviously we use this data to to inform all of our instruction moving forward for the rest of the year you know small groups what are we doing how we incorporating more intervention strategies uh specifically at Warren and Mendes you know they're using this data for their data team meetings to drive all the conversations we're having about specific students uh report cards have been delivered for Ashton middle school and Ashton high school those were made public to the kids and parents last week um And in regards of report cards we've had a lot of recent discussion specifically at the elementary level about taking a deep dive and and a look into improving our report card
specifically how we are um providing the right information at the right time for our our parent community of our elementary students so those conversations have started now at the site Council level at at both Warren and mindes U but I wanted to give you the heads up that that's something that we're really going to be looking deep into right now is is whether or not we need to make some shifts in in our report cards um at evaluation update really quickly formative assessments have been uh delivered to all of our teachers who are in their first three years and um you know when it comes to talking about the goals you know one of the goals is involving this Ed education evaluation committee that we had I I I talked about the fact that we're
having some really rich discussion and um the conversation today set it around whether or not we actually think we're going to be able to finish this task ask by the end of June um and folks are thinking that because our conversation has been so rich and because this is such a huge topic that we we might need additional time uh so I thought I would just bring that up because we are talking about goals and I'm not sure if we will have a a finalized decision ready to be able to be brought forward to the Union uh by June instead what we're thinking right now is we may be trying to potentially pilot some changes with some certain individuals we talk about that for a year while we continue to to look at this but
I'll be able to update you more in the next coming months but um we're thinking that this is a really big task and we want to do it right and we we we know how important edal is um but we're we're we're wary right now of whether or not it's going to be complete in June uh and last thing I had a great meeting um uh the decisions of every return Coalition met on uh February 7th uh over at dolce de there were several folks from the community that were there representatives from the as fire department as police department uh several of our building administrators some of our teachers were there along with community members uh to discuss know the decisions that our students make on a regular basis and to look at data around
substance abuse around uh relationships uh it's really great to get so many folks in the room talk about what we can do to best serve the Youth of our community any questions I'm just curious you were talking a little bit about um you know like the data teams at at Warren and mes and those are newer at mindz so how can you just remind us where where are they in the process in terms of those data team meetings I know at Warren they're really robust and um you know they're running like a finely oiled machine they've been doing it a little bit longer where is menes in the process so so I think Mendes is probably in um that midphase where the not not like a well oil machine yet but we are we are
really going well and and I have to I have to praise Kate Kate Alman in in terms of having that continuity in how we were doing these meetings at Warren and now she's brought many of those strategies to Mendes you know one of the things that I'm really excited about is the incorporation of different people in the team so our for instance our El staff is taking the time to meet with our literacy staff first and then they're going over their data and then bringing it to the the team the teaching team for a greater look at to really specifically look at interventions that are happening for that population of student as you know those those are some of the students who have our highest need um and they've really focused this year solely on
on literacy and I think at Warren they're they're moving beyond just literacy to to math as well as social emotional uh data so we are at the beginning stages but I think that we're making great progress especially in the area of how we're looking at our Ela data yeah okay um thanks Mike and we have a series of policies that we have second reads on um let me just go through them one at a time and see if anybody had anything further uh first policy bdb school committee officers anybody want to make a motion to approve or not I I uh move to approve bdb school committee officers policy second discussion all in favor or nothing that passes uh policy bdfa School councils I make a motion to approve policy bdfa school council second second
okay thank you any further discussion favor I ask for nothing policy efd could probably put these in consent agenda uh efd School nutrition we go through and then do one you know yeah just keep way um efd School nutrition program charge policy I move to uh approve policy efd School nutrition program charge policy second you any further discussion said further any discussion all right all in favor I I I I unanimously for nothing L GBE personal use of technology I make a motion to approve policy G personal use of second any discussion call for the vote all in favor I I or nothing uh policy and D access to digital resources make a motion to approve policy J Tech Construction about that uh sorry motion to approve uh jnd access to digital resources second discussion
all in favor I I for nothing now J J and DB use of technology and instruction make a motion to approve keep the samey N DB use of technology and instruction as presented second right any discussion all for the vote I all in favor I jump in the gun all right all in favor or nothing and last and DC acceptable use resources I would make a motion to approve policy i j NC acceptable use of digital resources as second discussion call for the vote all in favor I I four I four nothing all right thank you uh consent agenda there motion to adopt the consent agenda so move second okay any disc well no discussion on consent all in favor I I passes for um reports of the committee members why we just go around
the table and start a a anything you want to add uh no I'm pretty much good okay thank you Chris do you have anything do not thank you suppose I'm going out of beyond the agenda by asking for that right Marcy you're a Committee Member I don't have any okay you know um I on Monday night was I think it was Monday night um was able to attend the car's um Team um panel that they did called The Bridges of understanding um the the title of it was bridges of understanding and lgbtq Plus panel on identity in allyship um it was a very I mean I'm always very impressed with everything that the car's team does I think they do a really wonderful job of um creating a very safe inclusive accepting space um for
our students for the community at large frankly because it's really open to anybody um and there were a number of community members um students there was um uh the executive director of out Metro West was part of the panel as well too and um faculty members uh it there was a it was a great showing of um the school Community to be there in support to both learn and uh I think be visible allies for the group and it was just very well done so I think it was a great program I was happy that I was able to pa uh I don't have really much of anything but I would uh just like to give a shout out to the high school counselors who put on a a college information Zoom session thought it
was yeah I I I thought it was uh informative well done uh yeah so that's all Happ um and I will share I went to the high school site Council on Monday afternoon um really deep discussion about the issue of the weighted grading um they had broken to couple different subcommittees um in the last month or so um one was sort of talking with um the guidance counselors and and sort of looking at it I think from the perspective of what what a potential change might mean and get some feedback there but they also had an opportunity to talk to the Needum schools in that group including um at least a couple students as I understand I was not a part of the meeting so I'm getting this right but they um they'd gotten feedback
from NM because NM had gone toed grading I think last four years or so three or four years um and you know they their their intentions and you going through it were sort of looking at stress relief it had a um suicide or two there students and were concerned about stress and thought you know changing the raing system relieve some of that um because of the pressure some kids might feel to try to achieve high GPA by taking more classes and um you know I think the overall sense I got was that needam reported that it it's really not been much of a change in anything good bad or and different um hasn't negatively impacted kids getting into college um but also the the ability to sense that it's made any material difference in terms
of stress level um they really don't have any sense that that has been successful or result of it um but admittedly I don't think they have a wasn't clear what kind they might be using to try to measure that um and also the the sense was that his weren't necessarily teaching less challenging courses because of the waiting going away since was the kids were aware enough that taking challenging courses was either personally rewarding or important for college decisions if that's so um you know so that was I think good feedback they have think a dialogue scheduled with Holliston and maybe one of their District I know Miss inur had talked with um principal in Milford and had a little bit of information but not like the full do they have an un so Milford I
think went the other way Milford went to a weighted grading system um and had been unweighted um and so there we had very limited feedback it was literally I think while we were in the meeting text or or some email um so I don't want to really report on that I think more important um they're they're going to try to do some more followup um and get some sort of more robust feedback from a couple other school districts that have this but I can say that I I think the sense is that there's a feeling that some people are ready to kind of bring the the discussion to a head um and whether that means a recommendation or no recommendation I'm not sure yet um but I think there's the sort of like okay so
where are we in this process type thing and um I did share with them they had asked sort of what would happen from here for the school committee's view you know that if there's a recommendation schoool commit is going to certainly look to understand why we believe this is going to be something better for kids um and look to have support for that um so I think I don't know whether they'll get to a point of a recommendation by the end of the school year but I will say that I think in the you'd asked me two months ago I would have said I think it's um unlikely and it seems that there's maybe more of a desire to sort of do something make a decision of we're not going to do something different or
what have you and that that could be coming to us you know later this spring you get a sense as to why maybe that sentiment has changed um would it potentially be related to any criminal pressures I don't think so I I not not that's identifiable to me and um you know there was one person who's kind of asking that question a little more directly um I happen to be friends with and I haven't had a chance to sort of just get a better read on at least thought process I I honestly have um no sense of how the group will come out on this um yeah I'm not saying which way are but just obviously we've gotten several emails so there's some you know group of people that are trying to cut it off
at the past if you will right um I don't I don't think that's connected I mean it's my God Instinct Paul and it wasn't um I acknowledge to them that heard from people um but I my sense is not that there're beinged understanding about how that Communications that come to us is somebody attended the last site council meeting asked about it briefly at the end that was sort of I think a day or two before the Needum exchange happen anyway and so that there was sort of influence it's outside the site Council that I think was pushing there um there seems to be a continuing robust discussion and if I were summarizing I would say I think staff members teachers who are in on the site Council seem to leaning if I'm reading it right
towards going to unweighted I think the students keep it um and I think there's a mixed bag among parents um and and I wouldn't try to speak for administration so like I said the overall desire to just share that with you so that you know that it might be coming in I I do want to say just for the Community I think it's very clear that if there were any recommendation it would not be to impact anybody who's in the building now be a change that would be for the incoming nth graders in the fall so they're starting kind of with whatever is going to be in place rather than trying to change something for kids who are even freshman this year um so they would continue under the existing system that's all I've got
so with that um is there motion to adjourn so move very second second I'm going to guess there's no discussion on this I'll just call for the vote all in favor I I I it's unanimous and we are adjourned thank you
