Welcome to the boardroom brief. I'm David Vincent, superintendent of Conro ISD and we have our board president, Misty Odinweller, and it's the first boardroom brief ever, >> as far as I'm aware, I believe. So, >> one of the things that you as the trustees wanted to make sure we did is [music] communicate information to our constituents and so they have clear understanding of what happened during the board meeting and give a a brief overview of those processes, discuss them a little bit and [music] then sometimes give a little bit of information about the why because that's really important when we're discussing what we're going to do. We actually adopted a mascot and some colors for [music] one of our new schools and that is the virtual school. We really as a board wanted to make
sure that we got an identity um for our virtual school. Okay. >> We settled on the [music] owl and navy and the blue last night as the identity for um the virtual school here in Conro ISD. >> Well, two things I want to mention and the big part about that is legislating [music] to get permanent funding, full day funding for for our online option for school. [music] And the second thing that I really think that was so at the heart when you guys mentioned as trustees is we want to make sure that these these kids have ownership our community is going to love it. So the second thing is that we talked about calendar and you know for those this is a universal if if a superintendent could avoid a couple of things that be
snow days and calendars because those are the two things that everybody has a lot of hot sports opinions about. OBS. >> When we talk about the calendar, I think that we had a great overview about what's going to happen. The public's going to get a lot of information. There's going to be online surveys. You're going to get a lot of input. We have a a committee that we have with this whole process. But can you talk a little bit about what the trustees have had for their vision and goal for what a calendar should look like and that what they want to present to the public? >> The most important thing that we need to understand is we need to understand our demographics for the district. >> [music] >> We need to understand what people
are looking for and asking for and we need to keep in mind the educational minutes and background of how it impacts when we have days off. Um, but we also need to understand there's the need for breaks and refresh [music] as well. Our district is growing demographically and becoming more diverse and more socioeconomically diverse. We're getting close to [music] to 50/50 now in our so ecodis ratings in our district. [music] So every time we shut down here, it affects [music] the whole community. It affects businesses. It [music] affects um commerce. It affects so much traffic. [music] It affects so much in Montgomery County. And so uh and when we close down our families that uh may not be on salary or acquire vacation days or any of those things, they're dramatically impacted. >> And so
that is a really big concern [music] outside of the educational instructional requirements and concerns. The I think the next most important one or one of the things that the board is looking at [music] as a whole is uh the well-being of our staff. We understand the mental resets, [music] the physical resets. It is extremely challenging to teach. Those are the challenges that we [music] face. Hearing the constituents that want to be able to take breaks and vacation and those that [music] physically and financially it impacts them dramatically when we close down. [music] >> The other two things I think it's important to mention is that because the dynamics of everything change so often is having a 2-year calendar was is not the option that we want to pursue at this time. Going to go back
and look at it annually. [music] And then when we talk about everything that we do that we actually have an option to [music] go even another month to review different things to make sure that we get everything right because we have a couple of meetings, we have a couple of surveys and getting it right. So look for these surveys, fill it out, give us good feedback because it matters. This is your calendar and we want to make sure we take care of you. Uh the other thing is is that uh we had a great opportunity. Our interim superintendent, [music] Dr. Ted Landry. Uh we have you you appoint we appointed him as deputy superintendent. >> Yes sir. We were I think that that was [music] a very proud moment for the board by uh moving
and having that opportunity to put him in as the interim superintendent. That [music] left us being able to save Ted Landry in Conro ISD where his heart was and where our heart was with him. [music] He did an extremely important great job for us as we were trying to bring [music] stability and calm in the district. We couldn't be more proud of the job he did [music] and thankful for that. And so last night we not only appointed him as the second in command as part of our dream team here. [music] Um but we were able to honor him officially and give him an award that our CTE [music] students here in Conro ISD made for him. It was amazing and it was a great opportunity to celebrate him. I'm glad you did. I'm glad
he's around because he's gonna help me a lot. So, the other thing is when we talk about all those different things, uh the way that it works, we're going to hear about teaching and learning and we're going to be looking at adopting some math instructional materials in the next year. And so, yes, we're going to be taking care of that. That it's a lot of information, but basically here's the process of, you know, we're going to be taking we we gave you a calendar for the selection process. We're going through actually a curriculum audit ourselves here to review that. So, I have prepared y'all that it might take a little bit longer than we had assumed at the very beginning, [music] but the whole process is to make sure that we have great materials for
our teachers and [music] excellent materials for our kids and uh a pathway and a runway and all of the things in between so that we can find success in the math classroom. Then we shifted to board policy. One of the things that has been a priority for the Conro ISD board is to make sure that we focus our attention towards certain things that are important that [music] reflect the values of the district, reflect the needs of the district, and we spent a great deal of time making sure that we take care of those kind of things. And so last night we had we you adopted some [music] and you introduced some. >> The the most important thing I want the constituents [music] and the community to know >> is that it is not a fast
process. It takes time and we work through it >> through those processes. I think that we had, you know, a a lot of really good discussion and dialogue. Uh it was uh great feedback, you know, and you know, my goal as superintendent is to make sure that we communicate this information that you guys have discussed. This is one way for us to be able to do this. Is there anything you'd like to to close with as far as the October board meeting or and now [music] and beyond? >> I think last night was a slam dunk and I'm so thankful to have you there for our first meeting last night. It was amazing and I'm appreciative of you. Thanks for the collaboration to make our first board meeting here together a success. And I look
forward to November.
