Good evening. This meeting of the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees is called to order. The presence of a quorum has been established. The meeting has been duly called and the notice of the meeting has been posted in the time and manner required. At this time, we have one public participant, Kim Ormsby, if I'm pronouncing that correctly. Um It's the schedule time on the agenda for public comment. The board wishes to hear your thoughts and concern. As per board policy, all speakers have submitted beforehand and we cannot make a comment. So, don't think we're being rude. That's part of the procedures. Hi, how are you? Good. How are you? >> I'm great. All right. I will not take up much of your time. Um good evening. My name is Kim Ormsby. I'm here tonight as both

a parent of Tyler ISD students as well as a classroom teacher in the district. Um and I would just like to briefly discuss educational technology. Um I recently finished reading a book that you may have seen in the news a lot lately. Um I brought a copy for each of you. Um it's called the digital delusion by Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath. Um if you've been on any of the Instagram social media algorithms, he's popped up quite a bit lately. >> [snorts] >> Um I am humbly asking um that you take the time to read it this summer. If you're not familiar with the book, Dr. Horvath calls into question whether our widespread classroom technology is truly improving our student learning. And without even reading, I think you and I can both assume that it's not.

Um I can stand here in confidence and tell you that technology is proving to be pretty detrimental to our students. Since I started teaching in 2013, I have witnessed firsthand the increase of technology in schools. Some good, some bad. I can attest that as of today, my students are struggling with attention, memory, and their problem-solving skills. I wish I had time to read everything that I highlighted and underlined in this book. My copy is very well loved. Um, but we would be here all night. So, here are just a few of my key takeaways, and I hope that you read it this summer um to see what you can take away as well. Our students do not multitask well. Their brains will not allow it. The devices that we are giving them increase their distraction,

and it fractures their attention. Focused attention is the gateway to learning. If children can't focus, they can't learn, and no software update will ever change that. Strong student-teacher relationships have a significantly larger impact on learning than almost any technology tool. Learning isn't just cognitive, it's a deeply human endeavor. By continuing to overutilize technology in our classrooms, we're losing this connection. And lastly, digital learning often makes the task much easier in the moment, but it reduces our long-term retention. Students are lacking the ability to transfer their knowledge into real words real world situations. Learning should be delivered deliberate and very effortful. So, members of the school board, Dr. Crawford, I'm asking you to please approach um future technology decisions with extreme caution, and I urge you to make evidence-based decisions. The data is all there. Um,

and I think it speaks very loudly. Um, I would like to leave you with just an excerpt from the book. Um, this is one of the pages that really really spoke to me, um and then I'll be done. Uh, this is from chapter four. Chapter four is basically debunking the myths addressing the technology apologist, if you will. It says, "Many schools have already poured immense time, effort, and money into ed tech. So, even when presented with clear evidence that learning is declining, they choose to stay the course. Going back feels daunting or even impossible. This is the sunk cost fallacy. It may be that the It may be the ultimate tech apology. The belief that we should continue investing in something simply because we've already invested so much certainly sounds reasonable. But past investment in

edtech doesn't justify present harm, especially when the cost is being paid by our students. We can't let the fear of admitting mistake prevent us from doing what's right. Yes, reversion may be awkward in the short term, but it will open ultimately open the door to better outcomes. What's done is done, but it doesn't mean that it must continue. In just the past 2 years, schools around the world have begun banning smartphones, which we have done, and I applaud us for that. Not long ago this seemed unthinkable. Phones felt too embedded. Critics warned that students and teachers both would rebel. They were wrong about phones, and I believe that they're equally wrong about edtech. It's time to lead the charge. The best time to push back against technology was 20 years ago, but the next best

time is now. Thank you very much. Thank you. Okay, next is what you've all been waiting for, the oath of office for school board trustees. Board secretary Gina Orr and current president Yvonne Atkins will proctor the oath of office to our new trustees. Ms. Orr? Thank you everybody for being here. Um we're going to start with Dr. Kendra Barche, if you will stand. Um and right if go Yes, please, in front of the microphone. Oh, that's fine. That's fine. Well, I sit in front. Madam President, I think that uh our current officers have done an excellent job over the past year, and I

would like to nominate you again as President, Yvonne Atkins. Second. All in favor? I. I. I. Anybody opposed? Okay. >> [clears throat] >> Hey. And now, the office of Vice President. Madam President, I would like to nominate Lindsey Harrison for Vice President. Second. All in favor? I. I. Anybody opposed? Motion carries. >> Thank you. All right. Ladies have it. And now, for the secretary. I nominate Ms. Gina Orr, the one who keeps us all in line. Second. All in favor. I. Anybody opposed? Welcome back again, Gina. We can't do this without you. And now we have consideration and action on reorgani- No, we did that. Personnel announcements. Yes, ma'am. Uh board policy allows for us to be quick in our hiring of principals except for in in administrators except for about six different positions. Tonight

we do have some uh principal announcements that have already been announced publicly, but per our agreement in front of the board, they will be here tonight to actually address the board uh as they come on to these new roles as either a uh well, I guess they're most of them are principals, then we have a one central office administrator that we'll be announcing tonight. So, up first we'll have at Bell Elementary School, Miss Tina Graham. >> [applause and cheering] >> Thank you, President Atkins, Board of Trustees, and Dr. Crawford for this opportunity. I'm honored to serve as the next principal of Bale Elementary. I want to begin by recognizing the strong foundation and positive momentum already present on this campus. The work of Tamara Johnson alongside student, staff, and community has set strong momentum. And

I am committed to building on that success as we continue to grow even stronger. I believe successful student outcomes are sustained through a strong campus culture. I am committed to fostering an environment where staff feel supported and valued, students feel safe and empowered, and families feel welcome as true partners in the work. I look forward to working alongside our teachers, families, and this board to ensure Bale Elementary continues to grow and deliver successful student outcomes. Thank you for your trust and your support. Thank you, Ms. Graham. [applause] Ms. Graham currently serves as an assistant principal at Woods, Andy Woods Elementary. She also served as Dean of Students there as well. Up next, coming over from Griffin Elementary to Bonner Elementary School, Mr. Steven Ladd. >> [applause] >> Ditto to everything Ms. Graham said. Um President

Atkins, members of the board, welcome new members, and Dr. Crawford, thank you again for entrusting me for this upcoming journey. Eight years ago, I stood here and started this journey with Griffin. It's been an honor. I know we've got some Griffin alum on the board right now. But I do look forward and am excited to continue working with the Bonner staff and the great work they have done over the last few years, the great work that Ms. Gomez has done, and as we continue to move forward with our connections with UT Health System and training up some baby doctors in the future. So, thanks again. I look forward to this next step. Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> [applause] >> Thanks. Tina Graham and Ladd, just want want y'all to know. >> [laughter] >> Handing

the baton or taking the baton from Ms. Gomez was Mr. Ladd, but going from Bonner Elementary to Douglas Elementary and replacing a legend there, a new legend going to Douglas, and that is Elizabeth Gomez. >> [applause] >> Hello, President Atkins, board members, and Dr. Crawford. I am extremely grateful for my time leading the Bonnerbees this past uh 3 years and super excited to continue my work um at Douglas Elementary. All right. >> [applause] >> Thank you, Ms. Gomez. Um replacing Mr. Ladd at Griffin Elementary School is Dr. Mayannine Smart. Um she's coming over from Chapel Hill where she was the bilingual ESL director, but she previously served at Griffin Elementary School as an assistant principal and a campus dean of students also at Griffin Elementary School as well. Dr. Smart. Okay, so good afternoon, President

Atkins, um members of the board, and Dr. At- I mean and um uh Dr. Crawford. I'm truly honored and excited to return to Griffin Elementary as principal. Having previously served Griffin as an assistant principal, I'm grateful for the opportunity to come back and continue supporting uh the students, staff, and the families of Griffin Elementary. I'm excited for the work ahead and committed to building um positive campus culture focused on growth, collaboration, and student success. Thank you for the opportunity um to once again serve the students at Tyler ISD. >> [applause] >> Thank you, Dr. Smart. Um as alluded earlier, we have going from Bell Elementary to Orr Elementary School, we have Ms. Tamara Johnson. >> [applause] >> Thank you, Board President Atkins, members of the board, and Superintendent Dr. Crawford. It is an honor to

stand before you this evening having served 7 years at Bell Elementary as uh principal and 2 years as assistant principal at Bell. However, I am equally excited, thankful, and blessed for the opportunity to serve the community of Orr Elementary School. So, get ready to hear THE ORR CUBS ROAR. >> [applause] >> YOU KNOW, ONE THING I WILL SAY whenever we approached Ms. Johnson about this opportunity, that the thing she said that was most profound was, "Wherever the district needs me to go." And sometimes it's like breaking somebody out of there like with TNT or dynamite to try to get them to go take on a challenge like she's going to have at Orr. But, thank you, Ms. Johnson, for accepting this role and and leading the Orr-mazing Cubs roaring all the way to Boulter and

then Tyler High. And then lastly, uh as far as principal assignments, we have Brittany Thompson coming to us from Mineola junior high? Middle school. Middle school. I don't know what y'all call it over there. Middle school to Caldwell Arts Academy. >> [applause] >> Formerly of Tyler ISD, also. That's right. >> Um President Atkins, school board members, Dr. Crawford, um in 2018, I was an assistant principal at Rice Elementary and I was part of the Tyler Principal Ready Program. And I always imagined myself being at this podium and I didn't know how I would get back, but I'm back and I'm back with my fine arts people and I could not be more pleased. So, I am so honored that you're once again entrusting me with our most precious precious assets, um our children, and I

I cannot wait to see the amazing things that they do. Um and I look forward to serving alongside all of you. So, thank you very much. Good. >> [applause] >> She'll fit in well over there. Previously assistant principal at Rice, Andy Woods, and master teacher at Andy Woods? >> Music teacher at Mu- Mu- and a music teacher at Bell. So, that's kind of her resume. Um central office, we do have a a new chief of student support replacing Dr. Julie Gilbreath. We certainly hate to see Dr. Gilbreath retire. But we can't work forever, Dr. Gilbreath. But Dr. Stephanie Cook comes to us chief of student support from Frisco ISD. Dr. Cook. Yes. Thank you so much. Thank you, President Adkins. Thank you, Board of Trustees. And thank Dr. Crawford for that introduction. I'm so grateful

to be here tonight and I'm honored to have been offered this opportunity to serve the community through this role. I've actually had a chance already to go around and meet so many people who have handled this transition so smoothly, Dr. Gilbreath being one of them and that tells me all I need to know about my new home and the way that we handle school business here. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and to supporting our campuses. So thank you again. Very good. Thank you. >> [applause] >> Dr. Cook's Dr. Cook's resume again, she's at Frisco ISD right now. She's the managing director of guidance and counseling since 2017. She serves as superintendent senior staff on the superintendent's cabinet. She has experience in director of guidance and counseling and college readiness in Irving

ISD, district lead counselor in Grapevine Colleyville ISD, behavior specialist in Birdville ISD and a special education teacher in Arlington ISD. We're glad to have the Cooks here. Her husband will also be joining us here as well later on. All right, that's that's it for his personnel announcements. Yeah, let's go a couple of action items, the Head Start and well, both of them are about Head Start. Do we need to discuss this? Um actually these are boiler boiler plate annual things that the the board considers and actually goes through. You've got the annual program self-assessment for the 25-26 school years as we wrap it up and the improvement plan for 26-27. Again, those are always federally required for school boards to consider be presented to. Then you also have the Head Start supplement supplement amendment, excuse

me. If you have any questions about those, certainly in-depth we can have Brandy Holland receive those or Dr. Groper or excuse me or Mr. Jones as well. I'm sorry. Okay. Not Mr. Jones, okay. Brandy Holland's back Brandy stand up wave to everybody. Thank you for putting everything together for this report. We know it's tedious work dealing with the feds at times, but thank you for that. Okay. [snorts] But they are action items. I move we approve items A and B. I'll second that. All in favor. I. I. By the poles, motion carries. And now we're going into executive session. I know you all are glad so you can slip on out. So we're going into executive session. The Tyler ISD Board of Trustees was previously called to order. The presence of a quorum has been

established. The meeting has been duly called and the notice of the meeting has been posted in the time and manner required. We do not have anyone for public participation. At this time as usual we're going to start with the pledge and prayer by Ms. Harrison. Please stand. Gracious and loving God, as we close the doors of these hallways and set down our books, we pause in gratitude for the year that has been. What a gift it has been to watch these young minds grow, to see curiosity spark, challenges overcome, and potential revealed in ways that never cease to humble us. We ask your blessing over every student as they step into the freedom of summer. May these weeks be filled with rest that truly restores, with laughter that heals, and with adventures that teach them

things no classroom ever could. Keep them safe, Lord, in the water, on the road, and every place their wondering hearts may lead them. Over our teachers, staff, and faculty, we pour out a special measure of gratitude. They've given not just their time, but their hearts. Grant them the deep rest they have so faithfully earned. Renew their spirit and their passions so that when the bells ring again in the fall, they return refreshed and ready. To the families who trust us with their most precious gifts, their children, may this season bring you closer together. May your tables be full, your homes be peaceful, and your memories be lasting. And when the summer fades and the new new school year dawns, may we all return, student, teachers, and community alike, with grateful hearts, ready to learn, ready

to serve, and ready to do it all again. Amen. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Honor the Texas flag, I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one indivisible. I got ahead of myself. Thank you, Ms. Harrison, for that um prayer and the pledges. There's no action coming out of executive session at this time. So, now the favorite part of the probably why all of you are here, special recognition. We got lunch tonight. Yes. Did she say 55? I think so. Okay. >> 55. I'm gone. Give them a few minutes to get it together. Good evening, board members and Dr. Crawford. We would like to begin the special

recognition part of the meeting by announcing our May district students of the month. The elementary student of the month is Mica Lee, a fifth grade student at Owens Elementary School. And the secondary student of the month is Mia Slicker, a junior at Tyler Legacy High School. At this time, please join me in watching a brief video about both of these outstanding students. >> [clears throat] >> The heart of our hometown beats strong [music] in Tyler ISD, where students are reaching goals, breaking barriers, [music] and shaping the future. Their journeys may look different, but together, [music] they are showing us that next is now. >> [music] >> Let's celebrate their achievements as we continue leading the way in Texas education. Let's close out this great school year by celebrating [music] our district elementary student of the

month. Hi, I'm Mica and I'm the district elementary [music] student of the month. Mica is a true definition of an outstanding Owens Eagle and an exceptional [music] role model for her peers. As a dedicated member of the student lighthouse [music] team, Mica eagerly takes on responsibility and leads by [music] example. Every morning, she tutors kindergarten students, showing the habits and character we strive to build in every student. It's very important cuz then [music] some students in kindergarten, they are like a little lower than some others, but then when we help those [music] that are like needing a little more help, we can like pursue them to like get an higher grades [music] like uh for first grade. Mica's leadership extends far beyond the walls of Owens Elementary. She faithfully serves at her [music] church, going

on mission trips and helping with Vacation Bible School. She also serves alongside her father in the kids praise program and youth [music] ministry. This summer, she will continue serving at a basketball camp in Boston, [music] once again investing her time and energy into encouraging young children. [music] Micah is a leader in and out of the classroom through her many roles on the lighthouse [music] team. Um she wears many hats at Owens. She helps tutor kindergarteners in the morning with reading. She has volunteered outside of class [music] with the lighthouse team to spread Christmas cheer at nursing homes. [music] And she is so willing to help anybody and everybody who needs help. >> [music] >> Now, let's turn our attention to the district secondary student of the month. Hi, I'm Mia Slicker and I'm the district

secondary student of the month. Mia is an exceptional student whose academic excellence [music] and leadership place her among the very best in Tyler ISD. Ranked 15th in her class and maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, she challenges [music] herself through a number of rigorous courses offered at Legacy. Her dedication to academic [music] achievement is reflected in her score of a five on the AP World History exam and her recognition through the National College Board Recognition Program. It's kind of nerdy, but I like history. I just like all the different like ways that especially like United States history, like [music] how it like became and different things that like are evolving and I don't know, I just think it's really interesting. Beyond the classroom, [music] Mia has distinguished herself through career and technical education accomplishments. >> [music]

>> She earned the NOCTI General Management certification, demonstrating advanced business knowledge and professional readiness well beyond the high school level. What truly sets Mia apart, however, is her leadership [music] and involvement within her school and community. She balances a demanding academic [music] schedule while actively participating in varsity soccer, student council as an executive officer, National Honor Society, [music] Young Life, and her youth group among many others. I have never seen a student so focused as she [music] is and she could have a 99 and still want to do extra credit to make sure she gets that 100. [music] But Mia, she's a quiet storm. She does her work, no questions asked, and she stays on task. Let's [music] honor these remarkable students as we celebrate the outstanding achievements happening throughout the district. Their success stories

remind us of the strength, dedication, [music] and spirit that define Tyler ISD. This recognition is proudly brought to you by CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System, partners [music] in supporting the bright future of our students and community. And at this time, [music] we'd like to invite the board to come forward. And at this time, please join us in welcoming Micah to the front to receive the Elementary Student of the Month Award. >> [applause] >> And now we would like to welcome Mia to the front to accept her secondary student of the month award. >> [applause] >> Our next recognition tonight honors the following Tyler Legacy High School students for advancing to the National Technology Student Association competition in music production. Up first is Saad Ali. >> [applause] >> Do you want to do both of

Coach Brotherton demonstrates a deep commitment to the overall well-being and success of our students. He consistently builds meaningful relationships by celebrating their achievements and supporting them far beyond the school day and showing up for them at extracurricular events. His presence reinforces a culture where students feel seen, valued, and supported. He maintains high

expectations while intentionally developing student leadership, and he creates opportunities for students to lead and serve others, such as empowering fourth graders to mentor kindergarten students as they learn to ride bikes. His influence extends far beyond physical education, contributing to a positive and connected campus culture. Come on down, coach. And our secondary district teacher of the month is Keith Shaw from Tyler Legacy High School, and here are a few comments from his principal. He is highly intentional in his work with students, designing lessons that build both skill and confidence while ensuing ensuring that all learners are supported and challenged. His passion for English content is evident in the way he brings literature and writing to life, making learning
