001[Music] hello this is Yolanda gree from around the clock we are at the ashin high school gymnasium we are here to celebrate make a wish we've done many of their events where they've given out wishes and we're here today to see how they're going to raise some funds to make those wishes come true we're here with dragon from the Harlem wizard dragon welcome to Ashlin thank you thank you Happ you be here have you ever been to ashin before nope this is my first time where are you from from Elizabeth New Jersey so a little bit different yeah a little bit just a little bit so what can we expect from the game today what can you expect from the game do you really want to know what you going to expect you want to
002expect you're here to expect a lot of craziness a lot of dance mov ferocious slam dunk that's T right there now we going to be throwing a lot of free stuff at the crowd we going to be entertaining the kids picking on the teachers dunking on the teachers making them cry like little babies we're going to do all that tonight great well we look forward to seeing it thank you for being here in Ashland and thank you for helping our make a wish make wishes come true great thanks dragon and good luck than you [Music] we have now one of our Ashland High Ashlin School faculty and your name is Danielle Rivera and Danielle uh what's your role uh I am one of the nurses at the high school wait are you related to the
003nurse who used to be here in the schools oh no I'm thinking wrong wrong name liit yes I'm showing Mye she was my nurse when I was in the Warren school so I know her well um so you're here to help make make raise funds for Make A Wish why did you decide to participate um I think make a wish Club is so important um we got to see one of The Wishes granted to one of our students last year and it was just um the most heartwarming experience to see The Joy on his face and yeah Miss shelds who runs the program works so hard and so do all the students so it's just really great to be here to help them Reach their goals we just chatted with dragon one of the Harlem
004Wizard and asked him what to expect so what are you expecting from tonight you know what I'm expecting um a lot of energy a lot of fun uh we're definitely going to win um so I know that that's going to have I'm not even worried about that right now um but yeah just a lot of fun and good time I think raising money for a really good cost you basketball experience I do I played for Ashley in High School um I won't say when it's a long time ago gradu I graduated in 99 yeah so uh former clocker I actually saw graduation really talk okay that sounds great well than for thank you good luck thank you very much [Music] we have moved to the other end of the lobby of the Ashland high school
005gymnasium this is where uh people who are have purchased tickets are checking in again the excitement as you're coming in the volume I mean I've been here when it's been loud but the volume and the excitement we have music going on in the gym we have people chatting and talking and of course all those wonderful sales items going on for Make A Wish uh we're about to go and chat with Lori tosy the chair of the Ashland school committee who is here helping out make a wish is one of the groups that she really supports and has always been a huge supporter as a member of the school committee so let's go chat with Lori we are now with Lori tosy Lori welcome and thanks for chatting with this make a wish is one of
006the groups that you have supported the whole time you've been on school committee tell us why it's so important to you oh my gosh well the best thing about it is that this group of students and all the other group of students for the past 10 years that have been members of this club have donated almost 10 wishes to kids to go on trips for free and then we take a group every year and we see how that works in action we go to Give Kids the World in Orlando with about kids and we serve them all week and honestly you'll need to answer your question to see the look on our teenagers faces when they see how it feels to give back to somebody and to help another person and to see how fortunate
007they are in their own lives um as someone who's involved in education and you have been too I mean that is something that you just can't learn in the classroom and we do a great job of learning in the classroom here in Ashland but there's nothing like um compassion between our teenagers and the hope is that they're going to carried into now one of the programs as you said is you take students down to Disney and we are a fairly affute Community but we know we have students who might not be able to do that does the make group offer scholarships or ability for students who maybe can't pay their way to go to Disney as well so that is an excellent question at school committee we ask that question every year for all of
008our trips um what we do have here at the school there is a fund that's called helping our own so um we don't really see where those donations go but the idea is that the people in the buildings who are managing those donations quietly behind the scenes they try to help with pop dresses and trips if need be books supplies so I couldn't tell you exactly like the amount of money that goes but I can tell you that it is a concern of ours as a school and as a district and we do want to make these opportunities available to all students um raise an Excell been in school now 10 years 11 years this is my are you in your fourth or your fifth this is my 14th year your 14th year okay yeah
009so you're a year ahead of me from me select for you School absolutely um I mean we've certainly seen a change in our community in regards to the need for pre-introduced lunch and things like that so it's nice to hear that there is those plant if someone maybe wants to donate to make a wish but also wants to help out that um help help our own fund how might they do that um I do know if you contact the adjustment counselor here at the high school Jennifer Shields um she can help you directly but I also know that if you read Mr Adams newsletters I think the one that I read just last week had a direct link to make um helping our own fund and some information about it um as a school Committee
010Member I do see almost if you recall like almost every meeting we are accepting donations to different types of things but usually there's always some that in for helping our own every meeting um and I I think we just find about different kind of ways something like this or newsletter or people just about school um it was started very [Music] generously so go to watch the game after help out I hope so we'll see we're do you know that we're expecting at Le 700 people tonight and maybe more so I might be a little L that is very cool but I don't know to go inside and see what it's all about I met some of the guys earlier there's so much fun and everyone's well the excitement is just palpable I mean I walked
