[Music] okay Josh Abrams here with a couple of our Boston marathon volunteers Paul Lisa I understand uh you're involved with uh setting up water bottles for the elite Runners can you tell us a little bit about what's involved there sure it's it's really interesting because each Elite Runner has their own bottle and we set them up for table the runners know exactly where their bottle is and which side of the road it's on and so after we set up it's just making sure that the right Runner takes the right bottle and it's it's a real fun stop to do we have to get here really early but then it's waiting till the runners get here sure sure now we're steer at uh Mile Three approximately right 5K it's a 5k okay 5K so uh So
Lisa uh what happens next right the runners come through here they get their water bottles what happens after that well it's interesting so the elite Runners have a stop every 5K so if you go down the marathon route there's going to be 10K um 15K so every 5K um there is a stop um so the runners know exactly as Paul said where the bottles are so now Paul how long have you been doing this I've been volunteering for 28 years I think this is my 28th year at the elite stop it's I started at a regular water stop um and I forget how many years it's been here but it's a lot okay so clearly you have a lot of experience with the marathon what is the craziest thing you've ever seen happen here nothing
that's really outstanding just at the the elite stop itself um historically that this goes way back I remember one of the wheelchair um Racers getting a flat tire and and this was actually before I was a volunteer helping them change a tire okay and Lisa you said right we're got a beautiful day here today uh what's the difference I guess what how how does the weather play a factor with the elite Runners with being able to grab their water bottles like is there any issue there yeah um no I mean it is a beautiful day it it makes it easy for them in the sense that um it it's easier it's not run it's not raining it's not you know um so the weather weather does definitely make a factor in it with the um
the rain and everything I actually ran Boston 2018 and the weather was atrocious it rained it I had snow on my car when I got up in the morning so it was just yeah so the the weather can definitely contribute to um to the the their race I guess you could say yeah now that's interesting perspective I didn't realize you would actually run the marathon before so I'm I must think that that informs how you perform your job here today as a volunteer yeah no it definitely does it definitely does um I've been volunteering for 21 years uh not so much here um like Paul I'm not sure how many years I've been doing it here but um it does definitely make a difference it also inspires you there's so many stories out there and
it just inspires you and to be part of the elite Runners and see them it's amazing because they're the ones that are running to win the race so it's just amazing absolutely so thank you for your time uh Paul really quick before I we wrap things up here uh anything I left out any any anecdotes or anything you can share with us it it's just a really fun spot to be able to be part of again as Lisa said have the elite runners go by know that you're supporting the people who are potentially going to be winning um and and seeing them come through here as a group it it happens real fast here um they're not strung out at this point so it's it's a real quick run through okay sounds great Paul Lisa
thank you for so much for your time here thank you for volunteering for the Boston Marathon
