001[Music] I [Music] oh [Music] H oh welcome to Around the Clock we are at the Ashlin Lions Christ tree sale and we are here speaking with Doc um introduce your full name Julian doctor from the as allance club and Julian first how long have you been a lion uh 17 years and how long have you been in Ashland uh since 1970 wow so almost 43 years wow but some of you may think that Julian doctor is familiar if you had kids that went through the Ashland Elementary Schools how long were you there what years did you work I was at the middle school for 10 years I that's where I started Mendes middle and then I went to the high school after that for 10 years and then Elementary level celing for 16 years so

00236 years total wow but now we're here to talk about Christmas trees so we're on the lot the new location where's the new location for the Ashlin Lions Christmas trees it's right here on front street where the farmers's market is usually is yeah and what kind of trees are for sale we have uh two t types of trees we have bossoms and frasers and what's the difference in the um frasers are have a little stronger needle and they hold the branches a little bit longer the bossoms have a nice fragrance and a softer Branch should we go take a look at each kind and show them sure oh this is a nice this is a nice fur this a Frasier this is a Frasier tree you can see the needles are are a little strong

003longer and they they stay on a little bit longer um but the frasers don't have as much of a fragrance as the blossoms so when you stick your nose in there people like some not quite the same scent yeah people like the blossoms a little bit better for the the scent but they prefer the frasers for the stronger branches and and needles let's go check out a Balsam right in back of us here this is a bossom you see the little bit softer needle and it has more of a fragrance than the frasers to we have all different sizes we range from 6 ft up to you see the Long Tall ones over there 12 ft High some of the tall ones and short ones we have some short ones on the front so any

004size tree you would want is available here for now so when did you start selling we started the day after Thanksgiving uh we fortunate we have the uh High School football players to help us unload the the trees off the truck they come from main our way up by the Canadian border and uh they're they're heavy coming off the truck so the football players help us do that they they take the trees off the the truck and bring them here to the lot and we also have the Boy Scouts that help um when they uh put them on the on the Sands they're all wrapped up with twine so we have to cut them open and spray out the branches and the boy scouts out with that so we're fortunate to have the football players

005and the scouts helping us out hi my name is Armen Enos and how long have you been a lion I've been a lion for about approximately seven years and why do you come and help sell Christmas trees uh was one of the uh first events that I uh volunteered to do as a lion and uh I love this time of year of Christmas spreading good cheer and uh I love and uh seeing the smiles on family's faces as they come and pick up their Christmas trees great one of the few Lots here on the uh this area and um everybody needs a tree wants a tree and you know bringing that Joy to the children and the families is great and then um you know I'm a little bit younger and we're always looking for

006younger alliance members so I here to help out as much as I can and lift the heavy trees and if anybody wants to join let us know so you had the football players here 8:00 in the morning how many of them were still celebrating from from the game the day before they were all here they're they're amazing young men they're really uh helpful and as they say um you know most of us are older and uh the trees get heavier every year so it really helps to uh to take them off the the truck the truck is stacked you know about 10 ft high with trees so they're really helpful to take them down and and bring them out here for us yeah so we do live coverage of the game and this year Ashland

007it was at home and they won 35 to zero so congratulations to our football team what a great way to end the season uh what else is there available here that we can go take a look at we have some wreaths we have different size wreaths let's go take a look okay we have two different sizes uh the smaller one's 18 in and we have the larger ones that are 22 in and uh where do the bows come from the um women Lions um make the bows the uh female members of our club have a bow making party and they make the bows for our wreaths and uh you can buy them with a bow or you can buy a plane or you can even buy the poe separately so buy the bow separately so

008yeah I always see those I always see those announcements and I can never make them oh I tried making one and in I couldn't do it so I come to the lot I pick a tree um is there someone around to help me pick the tree move the tree yeah we we have U members here that help you to carry it and we we give you a fresh cut on the bottom the fresh cut allows the water to be drawn up into the tree and um we offer U bailing which is like putting netting on the tree and then once it's bailed you also help put it on the car right so people don't have to worry on the car or into a pickup truck you tie them down the top of the cars we

009haven't lost one yet so uh they are tied down pretty well what's the furthest someone has come to get a Christmas tree here that you know of um I think farest I think uh shrewbury someone came from Shrewsbury once to buy a tree I know there's a on Saturday afternoon there was a couple here visiting their family from B they they live in Boston family still lives here I don't know if they came back on Sunday to get their tree but from so Boston as well which is a cool thing he might have come out Sunday I wasn't here Sunday but we we had a a first uh there was a young couple that is living in the apartments uh above uh the uh the um new building across from the town hall oh yeah

010and they have an apartment above there and they came and they picked out a tree and we said do you want us to tie it in your your car you said I'm carrying it so they carried it down to the apartments down across from the town hall so it's great that this is a Cas yeah Cash and Carry yeah so oh at 128 main you mean the new building oh nice oh that's fun that's funny what is the most interesting story or interesting interaction you've ever had while selling Christmas trees cuz you've been doing this a while um well one time there was a young not an older couple that came and uh I think the woman looked at every tree on the lot she had her husband pick it off the rack and twirl

011it and put it back and they walked around must have been there 2 hours and uh she finally settled on the first tree that she saw that's that's usually the case someone sees the tree and they go around looking for another one and they go back to the first one so firste what's the quickest you've ever seen someone pick a tree um that was a young couple across from the town hall the apartment ACR the town you saw one and that was a one and he carried it off yeah good what's the price range of trees and how how are the prices related to the size of the tree um I see Prices range from I think uh the price is $60 60 up to 80 roughly for the these size trees and the larger

012ones are more expensive they're um like 82 100 okay great well thank you doc Julian for taking a few minutes to speak with us the Lions when they sell their Christmas trees it all goes back to charity either things here in Ashland or to IR research so if you need a tree come on down to the Ashlin Lions Christmas tree lot
