001okay my name is Bill Yates I am um never mind we are waiting for Elizabeth Burrows walking down the hall and then she will start the meeting yes one of us takes control I mean it doesn't yeah [Music] Elizabeth I was going to intro introduce myself as um uh the pro tem temporary sorry everybody that's quite okay as Elizabeth sets up I would like to say how impressed I am on how well these middle schoolers pulled together uh okay I will call this meeting to order at uh 6 35 again I apologize for it okay um are there any changes to the agenda appearing then I will be on as everybody had a chance to review the minutes from the last two meetings for those being September 12th and October 10th yes and so I'll

002take a motion to approve the minutes of September 12th and October 10th up I'll take a motion to approve those two sets of minutes both secondary uh does anybody have any comments about those two sets of minutes I have one comment and that is that uh the first executive session from the October 10th reading was regarding uh legal matter uh okay um over here on our board is remote it's four of us we're just going like yeah okay so uh all those in favor Rebecca how do you vote hi and Davis how do you vote all right Bill how do you vote all right Nancy how do you vote hi I am an i uh okay um next we have public participation and announcements I think we have uh focused on learning a middle school

003presentation yes we are I am super excited and super proud of our eighth graders who are here today and some of our sixth creators who are online we have three presentations for you this evening first we're going to start with um Audrey McFarland who is here from the eighth grade sharing something from her social studies class then we're going to have um Lorraine wall and Isabelle McClay from sixth grade present one of their self projects with Ms Fox leading them in and then we're going to wrap it up with an eighth grade presentation of the farm and Wilderness recap excellent hi um I'm in the eighth grade um I did this Project's class um we did like some work in class where we were learning about the Lost colonists of Roanoke um and uh we

004looked at some information and then we tested like these little picture functions uh you picked a scenario about what you think happened to the colonists you're growing up uh I picked uh the one where Spain goes and kills the college students and it uh I rub these captions and typed them on the computer and then printed them and then I uh sketched out my drawings and then I went through and I covered in Black I remember and then I colored them in with markers and I had like they were like little comic book pieces nice so all of these nice little cages thank you we'll give it back so I have a question um what makes the Revenge of Spain plausible to you possibly in other words yeah it's just that I don't know it

005just makes sense to me because uh the Spanish and the English were having a war at this time and um uh the Spanish had a settlement in modern day Florida then the English one had loved it out and so I think that they were they were sure nice and how else did the War affect Roanoke we didn't learn much about the war specifically no no no how did the more affect Roanoke just they took all didn't it delay the return of the founder about well sort of the song The the guy who brought all the people over his name was Sean likes uh after some triathlete from just like setting everything up they went the Chandler went back to England for three years to get supplies and then he came back and found nobody there

006delicious challenge well done I I have a question are you going to be a graphic artist because it's really good so I don't know if you're thinking about it but if not you may want to look into it A Plus on the dialogue yeah it's excellent well done thank you while I get up the next presentation for Isabelle and Lorraine I'll have MS Fox introduce the project hello Melissa Fox 67 science at Windsor and our sixth graders have been learning about cells so we made an analogy comparing a cell to another complex system and Lorraine and Isabelle were kind enough to volunteer to share so take it away this is um okay uh so we did a cell is like a prison by Jason Beach Floyd wall Salas Cabo and Isabelle McClay the cell membrane

007or cell wall is like the fence the fence is in the prison is like a cell membrane because it surrounds and traps people in a prison the nucleus is like a warden it controls the prison like the nucleus controls the cells [Music] the cytoplasm is like the prison cells they are like the prison uh cytoplasm because it surrounds the present like the prison the cytoplasm surrounds organelles with a gel like liquid the mitochondria is like electricity is like electricity because electricity makes energy in the prism like how mitochondria makes it energy in the cell foreign [Applause] is like a storage closet a vacuole is like the storage closet because it holds stuff keeps things safe and stores things away the endoplasmic reticulum is like a cafeteria a cafeteria is like the ER because both have

008food because the cafeteria makes food and the ER makes proteins the Golgi apparatus is like the male room The Mailroom is like the Golgi app Pilates because both package things [Music] the ribosomes are like a grill in the prison the ribosomes are like a grill because they both make protein [Music] the colioplasts are like the chef the chloroplast is like the chef because the Chef makes food and so does the colonial Plus [Music] you think that's it thank you so much ladies who also worked on this project that was amazing science fun dude yes for someone who is not a uh a biologist in any sense so that was an analogy that made it make a lot of sense thanks that was really good you're welcome can anyone explain the difference between the cell membrane

009the cell wall what what was that what's the difference between a cell membrane and a cell wall is there was an ore there at one point um well the cell membrane is uh wait uh so the cell membrane is um I'm not really sure how to explain it Isabel do you want to try to explain it okay well the cell membrane oh is he did you I forgot what it does do you remember what it does because I don't oh no because like I forgot who it was I remember a few of them but that's just not one yeah same do you remember one of those things is just in a plant cell do you remember which one thank you I'm just guessing is it the nucleus oh the cell wall is around plant cells

010and then plant and animal cells both have cell membranes interesting we haven't compared plant animal cells yet no we have we're getting there no we haven't done we've done always more okay thank you ladies thank you very much foreign [Music] ERS who are going to share the farm and Wilderness recap come on up team that's good information before you start would you mind introducing yourselves um farm and Wilderness slideshow uh the people that helped it's time to put that back sorry Audrey or Amanda Riley me Isaac the first one who is not here Isabelle is the girl who is virtual Joshi over there Lily Lawrence who could not make it worse person thanks what we enjoyed and why future Generations would enjoy some of the reasons why we enjoyed going to Harmony Wilderness is because

011we got to detached from social life on the internet and we got to spend lots of time talking with different people we don't normally talk to many of many of the people that went said they enjoyed the time they spent there and would 100 go back in later years we believe it's important that every kid gets to experience this place um and all the different activities that it offers um it's a nice place to just Escape um everyday school and have some free time to just run around and enjoy yourself even at night plus there is a little bit of everything there if you're a woodsy person there's plenty of woods and we play games spend time in cabins and the lodge and make bonfires and everything else so uh why Middle School would like

012to continue to go we all had a blast at farming Wilderness and we think the continued and new middle schoolers would love it just as much as we did it was a great place to go for all kids whether you enjoyed the outdoors or not we can guarantee that you'll have fun some way or another whether it's the free time swimming the games we did there's just an experience for everyone that would for sure there's an experience that everyone would enjoy if they went here it's also important for kids our age to get off our phones every once in a while so usually almost the horse and I know some people weren't really looking forward to being away like for that long just two days wasn't really that long but so yeah in the end

013I think we can all agree that it was a great time it's also very important that we have different memories and more exciting memories than just sitting in the classroom and learning in escaping your comfort zone well a lot of the class was excited to go some of us were so going to farm and Wilderness within itself was kind of intimidating and some of us hadn't left home very much so being away overnight created a little nerve-wracking a lot of us also tend to have our phones on us like a lot or near us so we can get it home or locked in a room for two days could feel weird but he will bust just leaving and staying in open cabins in a place we had never been to isn't exactly in our comfort

014zone but a lot of the activities especially reforms at first the plan like something that wasn't in your comfort zone but something about the environment is very encouraging there was a few activities that some of us didn't necessarily want to do and would have regretted otherwise why our class would like to be able to go again when we went in the beginning of the year we all we all enjoyed it a lot and I know that if we could like if we had the chance to go again that we would definitely take that chance and once we uh once we got back everyone was raving about the experience and about how we would all love to go back again we also wished that we had gotten the chance to go last year and a lot

015of the students still talk about it this day this group included it was the beginning of the school year so we didn't have much stress but it was great to not have to care about school related things plus once we get into high school we will have more responsibilities and probably more stress so it would be a nice little Escape we all made memories that we will never forget there and it will always be a place of comfort [Music] oh yeah um do they still have sheep there or not they have pigs sheep goat Sunny bunnies I built all the fences there which I'm sure have been replaced because I built them probably before your parents were born thank you that's great that sounds like a it just sounds like a wonderful experience and I'm

016wondering if you would recommend that each class experience something like this because it just sounds so good yeah experience like when I was first hearing about it like a lot of the stuff they're talking about I was like kind of iffy about and I mean my mom was going up to Cape Cod that weekend do you like no you have to experience this and I'm really glad I did because I would regret it like another thing that makes it so amazing is just the teachers who put it together because like the our Middle School team is just amazing and Lord Lord Mr Lord wrote The Grace yeah first Lord went there too he was a director yeah he was sent there as a camper and then he was the director yeah what uh and maybe

017there's not consensus on this but what do you think are like the best activities yeah if you were blindfolded and he played a drum and we just had to go like this um thank you um was it just you guys it was awesome and the sixth graders left in the first time yeah so the actual Camp itself when we were staying these boys camp but there's a girls camp like I don't know a little bit about five minutes away it's really not like walking so there was another school staying at some of the other parts of the camp the part we were staying at was just went there yeah so did you interact with the other you know no okay so we only interacted with the people who were on staff there yeah it was

018very just mostly the people who took us to the animals right yeah we also had like a lack of flashlights so we just fell over a lot yeah that there's something for everyone yeah that's great it sounds like it's a great experience to take that I really like the way you emphasized out of your comfort zone because as you get older and you get more responsibility at some point in your life you're gonna have an opportunity to go someplace to travel okay and take that my opportunity was five months of museums by myself so at some point you'll have the opportunity to vote way outside your comfort zone and it's a great experience so yeah I think it's wonderful that the school was able to offer you this opportunity that you guys sound like you

019took full advantage of it I would like to say that I think the one thing that I heard repeated at least three times was about the phones being off the phones it was a technology and what I noticed and I think what all the adults noticed was the interactions the the eye contact the kindness and that bonding that you guys talked about that you brought back to school kind of made me realize was like how much I really use my phone yeah because the amount of times I like went to my back pocket to try to like that yeah yeah music on our phone and um like about the Blondie thing I mean like I I know I was like talking I was talking to one of the seventh graders who had like maybe talk

020to twice and I've known him forever so you made some mixed relationships yeah and afterwards I got his number and now we talked frequently because and I don't think any of us were excited about not having our phones yeah until we didn't or at least the majority of us and then we didn't have them and it was like yeah yeah not that it would have mattered because theorists of self-service yeah [Laughter] yeah yeah great job guys thank you so much students you are welcome to stay but you are also welcome to dismiss yourself [Music] ladies and gentlemen eighth graders this is still the public participation and announcements um thank you why am I thank you Corey I did not want to be the only one um oh no I'm an event planning so I'm thank

021you I'm the one plan in advance it's really nothing it's not that big of a deal I guess because we have dances every year but it's on October 27th just the third stage from seven to nine um yeah and pretty much just gonna be food and music and people a lot of people like is it is it for again just Windsor kids um they sent A Beautiful video invitation this morning I forgot about it I'm so happy I wasn't met Josh you had a question um oh well it's not that exciting it's a dance um from seven to nine so I'm just wondering is it is it pretty common for students to take part in uh organizing no I don't know I think this is the first year we're doing that yeah that's really cool

022and that's that's awesome that you were able to take part in that um I'm somebody who's done a lot of event planning and like getting early experience in it it is a really great skill to have and it uh it can be really nerve-wracking but it also yeah can be really fun especially when you get to the event and uh have a great time so and remember when you dance always go outside for all the Middle School couples to put on a few slow dances okay my issue with dancing is that my comfort Zone's really big I Can't Dance thank you are there any other amounts um yes I would like to make an announcement um next Wednesday at the Welcome Center there will be a community discussion on drug overdoses and what the community

023should know and that's going to be next Wednesday is that this coming Wednesday or next Wednesday I thought it was the next one okay from six to eight oh yeah six to eight awesome you just hear the kids departing for a second uh are there any other announcements [Music] I see we have Hudson hi welcome back glad to be here bye yeah um and okay is there any public participation this evening okay none uh the next item is Administration administrative report thank you are we going what's that Nancy never mind we're all set I'm sorry all right so for our report for this month we're talking a little bit about school updates um some online course online course activities and then the superintendent thanks and let's see if I can do this yeah there it

024goes okay that's good here all right so some things going on at the school in West Windsor Albert Bridge School want to share a little bit about how our station work is going and when we talk about station work instead of doing intervention work where we're doing a lot of pull out for like 504 and IEP plans for kids who need specific work we're really working to put them in the classroom so you'll see typically in during math Ela times for all the grades you'll see um Specialists come in to work with kids and either individual or small groups and they can be accessed by all kids so for example we have an interventionist who's an academic interventionist um and then we have a special educator who will push in for during these times and

025you might see them working with a kid who might be has a plan or during the rotation they may actually be working with the kid who's not on a plan but meeting next to where they are and trying to give them unique individualized experiences for working in a group of three where one of the kids might be on a specific plan this has been a work that we've been moving towards for quite some time a big component of that though is teaching the kids how to leave each other and so we have the role you have to ask two people before you ask me so you'll see in the picture on the left hand top left hand side that's one student who's at a different station coming to check with another student who already has

026identified as I have this skill down and so kids know to go ask him if that's a question that they might have so this is one kid from a different station coming to ask and then you'll see on the middle picture on top just kind of how the stations look so you'll see different independent groups moving around and kids doing a lot of leaving their own learning and working with each other but then you see two other adults in that room really working um pinpointing what the cube means that's a lot of what we're really trying to move towards in our stations approach um we're closing our community unit although we're really doing community all year long I'm gonna move to the Harvest unit so you'll see like if you go into the school stuff

027is everywhere including in the nurse's office so like our stocks there in the nurses office we're all all in all the time Nancy Jennifer Jennifer um what space is that uh stations in action is that a classroom what where is it so that is one of our so we have a large classroom that has a wall that kind of pulls out that separates right what's right now our first graders and second graders so this is actually first and second grade ELA time that you're looking at and so we've got our kids from both ages in the different classrooms working in stations and groups based on what they're working on including making sure that there's leaders around in different learning areas so kids can go on access without having to go into a totally different room

028thank you that looks great yeah it's really working out well and um so much of it has to do with the support and capacity of having an interventionist or a special educator embedded during the ELA teams and then combining the two grades that's great that's what we've been talking about I know so much excellent totally awesome yeah um a little update on later in the meeting um work what we're doing so morning meetings we do a full School morning meeting where myself or our other Lighthouse leader annalize Ennis leads morning meetings based on lesson plans from the leader in me and we're just walking through the big ideas and just taking Snippets out of there and doing group questions or modeling and practicing so we're doing a lot of work there we also adjusted our

029MRI a couple weeks ago which is the assessment parent survey and we're resending that again to get more participation for our staff in our community members a bus update just let you guys know after our last meeting able to problem solve Larry really worked hard with the bus company to try and figure out what we can do so that um our kids who come over to the btg program version to get after school program um don't have to send the bus before hour and a half or right in a van which takes um I mean quite a bit of resources from adults and so we figured that out that just picking the kids up a few minutes early to drop them off here and then the bus driver who drops them up here is actually

030from here so we've got that figured out which is really good um regarding after school and child care things so the last meeting that we're at for this group I was attending a select board meeting and during that time they talked about the possibility of creating kind of a community recreation program and the select board asked for more information and wants to move forward on that so that's where they are they're looking at kind of next step and towards creating a local Recreation program which may be able to support and how something similar to what we've done in the past for an after school we've kind of support the club and we're also working with resume Gap here and they've been to tour the space and look at the needs and they're working with me

031to get licensed on site at this point they're not confident it's going to be a this year thing though it may be able to be but we don't know that yet um for Bridging the Gap to be able to create a second site um and then the other component that we're still trying to go for is if the if the site license can we then have locals who are already working on it um to kind of take over what would be similar to what was the Adventure Club so those three things are still in action um nothing's resolved yet unfortunately for our community but lots and lots of energies we're going to try and figure out what to do to make something that's sustainable um sixth grade connections we are going to and I think

032it's also on another slide October 25th we're going to start coming over using the van for the last period of day or sixth graders you're gonna come over and join the passion courses that are going on here at Windsor and if I understand it's like a six week kind of group my guess is it's possible that the dance thing maybe was something that came out or something like that so we're um just looking to bring those sixth graders over to start making connections there um in addition we've got um we're working with the kindergarten teacher to actually do some work for The Kindergartners here coming over to our school to do some of the Outdoor Learning because they're really starting to dive into some of that so we're really looking at lots and lots of

033awesome connections um just like every other school in our district we've done the traditional drills um the first month we're supposed to go through a bus uh what's traditionally called the fire alarm and then an ALICE um process where we talked through what are some possible options so we don't actually go through a drill of it but they get dialogue going in their classrooms that are age appropriate about what might we do where might we go how much so for our school we use the idea of a bear because we do actually have Bears around um and so it made it a little less I think challenging for some of the kids um and it set the stage for having the same conversation um super awesome another thing with the van um sixth graders did

034have been working on a project um they these four kids chose to do math by um by the real world as I called it so they actually had to create so I gave them a recipe that just to work with ratios and then we're able to go and actually purchase stuff they had to figure all the math out they had asked for the money they had to know how much they're making to make six cakes for the entire school um and I didn't give them what 1K it was I gave them what like 25 cakes worth and 60 cakes were and they hadn't figured out um but just um their excitement about having I gave them three ways to choose to learn and they all could choose any way they want in all of the

035sixth graders chokes this way and um hopefully I'll be able to send you all a little cake soon but it's really an awesome experience and I love being back in class from that point and we've also been able to go up to the mountain a couple of times now to work with sunny outdoors and the organization just by far just an awesome collaborative group and curriculum is this Wednesday so stop by if you're interested Windsor yeah so I'm happy to go as well let Sergio lead us if you'd like to Sergio sure thanks hi everybody good evening I'll kick it off here for Windsor K-5 um we are super excited to have uh kicked off our uh bi-weekly assembly series based around leader and me that started uh a week and a half ago we

036have our next one this coming Friday uh and these are celebrations of our students um uh living the seven habits and uh creating our school Community together the first one had about 25 or so family members come which is really great after all these coven years to have families back in the building and helping us celebrate our kids doing what they do and leading our school so that was very cool we're looking forward to our next one again this coming Friday we have again kicked off our walk to school series we've got two different um uh ends of town that we meet at and our numbers keep growing each week which has been wonderful to see uh and uh and a great start to uh walk to school so wonderful uh leader in me uh

037continues to roll on we have uh this incredible Lighthouse team and action teams in place uh I wanted to share here a couple things in addition to some of the um I wouldn't say standard but some of the um you know more expected things that come along with leader and me like the classroom missions and the daily teaching of the seven habits and things that we have started the year with but now we're starting to see uh where some of that rubber meets the road for our students which is really cool so a couple examples uh from these past couple weeks and these are just from my walk throughs of the school during various times of the day but one is the leadership of morning meetings happening mostly in our three through five classes that

038are almost entirely student-led which is really really cool so students kicking off the day queuing up others for various tasks and jobs that are in the classroom and then leading the morning meeting much like you would expect a t we'll be back it's not a good part one is uh nope everybody's still there yeah yeah we're here it's all right uh staticky for a second um the second one is uh uh student leadership in response to a community issue um the community issue uh was a messy dining hall uh so we're back in the dining hall this year after a few coveted years of eating in classrooms and being in the dining hall or or our gym uh and uh we needed to do a little work to make sure our community space was clean

039so after a couple weeks of meals our floors were well our floors were a little messy with some of the stuff that you would expect to be on the floors after uh K-5 lunches so in our uh two three and four five uh classes they have uh gathered uh together discussed the problem and come up with a solution to have lunch leaders at each of these meals and these lunch leaders it's a rotating group of students who stay behind at the end of the meal and make sure that the dining hall looks acceptable and in good shape so that our maintenance team doesn't have to do undue work now the interesting thing about this has been um that be so if you were to take a snapshot of an average day before our student leaders

040taking over you would see you know a messy dining hall some to some degree and if you were to take a snapshot uh once some of our um uh dining hall leaders were in place before they started working I think what you would see is a significantly lower amount of mess and that's pretty cool because it shows our students taking ownership and understanding that it will be their peers cleaning up and that they all have agency and that they all have a part of taking care of a community space so very cool so lunch leaders there um let's see I'm talking fast here my apologies uh last leader of me thing is our MRA is set to go out here shortly we're working with Barb our coach and the leader of me folks to segment

041Windsor School into k568 and 912 and once we have that set sort of on the on the back end of the survey those MRA surveys will go out to the community last two things quickly here Starbase Vermont our fifth graders have now done two weeks with Starbase one virtual one in person up at the Rutland site doing steam projects and most specifically Rockets so that's been very cool I didn't get a chance to throw let me send those around for the next time very very cool my last K5 agenda item is in response to a question from our last Mountain board meeting bill I think it was your question on the amplifier systems in classrooms currently we have seven deployed these are the lightspeed systems these are in use every day by those classrooms that

042have them installed and so far the feedback is great people appreciate teachers certainly appreciate uh their voices uh being spared by the end of the day um and it also I think more importantly perhaps speaks to an Su goal of more udl practices in place so I think the amplifier system certainly speaks to something that is uh increases accessibility for all students in the classroom based on the feedback thus far this year for those systems courses you can imagine the rest of our classrooms want some too so we have a ask out there for some numbers in regard to outfitting the last five classrooms which would be one-third two-fourth and two-fifths for possible inclusion in next year's budget cycle that's all I've got I have a few questions the first one is really simple what

043does MRA stand for I will have to pull out the uh exact uh meaning you got it Christine go for it yeah measured results assessment and what does that mean well it means that um we gather data from our students our staff and our families around certain areas um culture engagement academics leadership and Leadership and we get those results back and we we look at the data and we set some goals around the data will you share data yeah absolutely can I ask you the questions they get shared um families to begin with but we can also download them and share them out yeah so that was the first thing the second thing Sergio was um can you let us know when those uh K5 assemblies are going to take place I can't possibly come

044this week but I'd love to attend one absolutely I'd be happy to put those out either bi-weekly so our next one is this coming Friday and then I'm happy to send out the the dates going forward thank you very much and my last question for you is uh what's going on with the fourth grade teacher who is for the fourth grade slot that hasn't been filled yeah so we have uh um [Music] strong of support staff members to rotate through and inventions to work with the group up there and uh so so far it's working um you know certainly in a perfect world um love to have another fourth grade position at this point in the year I think they are successfully running uh fourth grade up there and um I think they're they're making

045it work in in fine style I'm really proud of what the team has come up with up there and uh it's working thank you yeah um let's see I see your hand yeah uh yes Sergio you use another set of um if I heard it correctly initials like u d l or something like that towards the end yeah so this Universal Design for Learning um yes thank you so the sixth through eighth grade update I will not speak about farming wilderness um at the same time when we went uh when many of the middle school students went to pharmacologist we had another field trip happening at the same time with our East classroom they were able to go to the Tunbridge fair to have their field trip and I was not one of the chaperones

046but Ms Ahern is online if she would like to speak a little bit about some of the events that day but I know they had a great time and it was a really positive experience and I think they would like to go back again would you mind just for those of us who don't know what is the Ace Program is the ace classroom is a classroom of middle school and high school students in our school who are not within their um they're not I'm going to ask for an assist from my leader Katie I stand for academic creative excellence student students in the um Ace classrooms there's actually several classrooms two couple main classrooms we use um with two core teachers um may also have coursework within the middle school and high school it's not

047and so it's an individual individualized small group based on learning profiles um and we currently have 16 or 17 students identified and from all across the Su so it's not it's not just about just got any students it's students from Wethersfield and from Heartland as well and what what do you mean by uh based on learning profiles can a student choose this program we had um we've actually had some students um who have been part of the discussion that they needed something different a smaller group less um a lot of it actually has to do with small group size more individualized instruction um and we're finding that teams mostly students are identified through their IEP team have been part of that process but no we haven't self-identified totally yet but really working on students being

048present for those discussions um so that's it's more of an IEP team placement situation as at this point okay okay can students come in and out good well go ahead sorry no no can they um participate in um classes with their peers and uh it's kind of like this you know yeah [Music] it is very fluid um and for some students it's a short term or just they come for one or two of the classes during the day and have classes elsewhere so everybody every single student's program is very different um based on what they need and how many students are in there 16 16. and that's six through eight or six through fix it through I think 12. yeah and just to be clear there are three different PODS of students who move throughout

049the day so they're not typically all together um based on their schedules learning profiles and interests so um where previously it had been one larger classroom now it is split up that's why we're it's the case classrooms and we're not considered a program there's a whole other connotation for that that's why we're caught we're making sure that we're it's their classroom options okay sorry about that no my favorite part about it is the diversity of the age group the different schools that come together and the variety of plans that kids have to choose their own Hub stay in their own learning and make those plans with their team and their parents and and I love getting to know our students from Heartland Westfield and Albert Richie get to join us um for our leader in

050me update we have had our one of our monthly coaches meetings today with um Barbara lintner who's our consultant she checked in with our Middle School Lighthouse team today sharing some leader me curriculum some of the things that we're starting to see come to life on our third floor are the mission statements of the classrooms we're seeing the ace classroom lead the way in the mission statements which makes me really proud because they're role modeling for the rest of the Middle School floor and um we're working on that the MRA assessment that Christine just mentioned Albert Bridge has started it Barbara Lindner does not have our school's data ready to go yet because they're dividing our K-12 building into three separate pieces of data so three separate groups or accounts so we're still working on

051that she she told me not to stress about it even though I wanted to and we are focusing on in the Middle School weekly mostly right now on habits one five and seven which are being proactive um seeking to understand and doing some balancing life finding balance so those are the three Mr Pooler is working with the team and the students on and they also are leading the meetings and we're very lucky to have you both here at um lower AIDS and seventh grade meetings to help lead those and seeing them here at school board meetings I think the elementary students and the high school students are gonna have to jump in or they will take over so um and then what else as Jen mentioned the passion period is our seventh period we're going

052to be having on the bridge join with us shortly and then we're going to work to extend that to see if they can join us a little bit longer once we change to second quarter see if they can join us for two periods at the end of the day for our specials courses which include PE include art include tech ed some other courses six period incidence period so be here for the last two periods of the day and then we added to this slide just um just a quick little shot of our evacuation drill for the bus um the Alice drill that we did was as Jen said the discussion with the teachers and the students in the classroom discussing what with the information you have what would you choose to do and we did

053our debrief as a faculty meeting and pointed out all of like the red flags for us as a staff probably the number one red flag for us was speaker systems making sure you could hear it in certain applications of the building um I it's probably not as important as it is to me to everyone else but Mr Taft and the administrative team keep time on the fire drills and they were record time makes me very proud to evacuate 600 people's plus out of the building um and then you asked us to give an update on the newsletter this is our um administrative newsletter from Windsor and the number of people who are viewing it yeah for the month of September it shows it really shows that you put a lot of work into those those

054desires we followed the lead of our fearless leader Christine who started us all we're all using the same platform yeah across the issue and it does um give us analytics we can see how many people are are viewing the newsletter um which we think is important in information because communication is one of our goals just about to get you deep in the weeds what what platform are you using today it's more okay yeah it's simple to use awesome yeah yeah it's pretty linear that's my one complaint about it it's pretty linear but it it it um Blair's here he would say the systems talk to each other so when you see it in your email it looks like it's supposed to explain it that's incredibly important and it's it's great that you can easily pull

055those uh those metrics apps it's good to see how many people you're going to get yeah so thanks for sharing that yeah and it really grabs it speaks to everyone I mean you know parents they say that they can read it it's not they're trying to make it succinct lots of visuals yes but really convey what the kids are doing in our schools thank you Nancy I see that your hand has been raised and then Wendy yes yes um I'm going um and it's Colleen because I couldn't understand all with all the kids I wish I had were there but the farm to Wilderness to what days was it was that on a weekend or and did the whole who who's what part of the staff can go I think we went on October 15th

056and 16th it was a Thursday and Friday of that week and the whole sixth through eighth grade left on Thursday sorry September I think was September oh sorry I meant to say September September 15th and 16th um the whole Middle School went on Thursday the sixth graders had a day event and they went home with Ms Bourne and the sixth grade teachers at the end of the day on Thursday and the seventh and 8th graders stayed overnight and this is us going back after being away from this trip for two or three years so it was it was a welcome return and so it was and with the new Middle School having the new model of having the sixth grade included um I think the kids hinted at sometimes it out of your comfort zone

057and going is hard and it was hard for people of all ages so um I think we need a little bit more time to get this to um what it is have more sharing of students who can tell a little bit more about it for people to feel more comfortable and then you know as you said maybe a lot of people that enjoy going to it a lot of classes so I don't know I don't know about the overnight portion but um yeah so seventh and eighth grade were there for an overnight in six or even home that day and all the teachers went on that team and and okay yeah spent the night yeah Jen and I had our own cabinet yeah cat is full of gifts of course sounds like a lot of

058fun yeah um yeah um Wendy I see that your hand is raised I asked just a quick question about the passion period do we have any rough numbers of how many students are coming over during that time and our staff members coming with them are just students I'm coming so I'm your staff member that's coming with them and there's four of them foreign thank you I got it I I just want to comment on um what Sergio spoke to regarding the um I think it was two three four five and creating um the lunch leaders I I just think that's a pretty awesome process and I I would love it would be really powerful for for them to be able to pull that together and maybe even present that to us to kind of speak

059to as to what video You're Next month kind of like what they went to increase effort you know and there must have been discussion and conversation but they were able to come to a consensus and that's four different and the behavior changed based on the information that would be really powerful for not only for us but for the community yeah absolutely love it yeah I'm really looking forward to hearing further updates about what the students are coming up with within this Leader in Me initiative I mean the fact that there are these doors opening for students to use their agency and be proactive in their educational environments and make changes like that I mean that's that's huge you know I I'm looking forward to hearing what you know what the high school uh cohort is

060doing as well exciting said right it's going to look different across every yeah yeah right um but yeah it's it's so cool it seems like it's already been so impactful we're only in October so I'm I'm really psyched to hear this uh just be starting off so well yeah all right Kim uh Kate is at her brother's wedding I know so she's a much better place too yes she's not here she said what am I gonna do I said you're gonna go to your brother's wedding yeah it's all good um but Kim uh was nice enough to come and do a little presentation on um flexible Pathways and I know there were some questions about Middle School language options and I don't know if Kim is able to speak to that tonight or not but

061um if not Colleen and I have done a little digging and we can uh do you want do you want the slideshow that I put together uh do you want me to drop it in the chat or want to present we um we can do that right jack agenda stop presenting you can present him okay let me uh present just I haven't done this in a while it comes back just like riding a bike right sorry about that um my presenting yes okay um let's see if I can get this okay all right so um I like to just put this in here I know this isn't the first time I've shared with you an update but I told Kate I would just give an overview of stuff that we're doing and maybe I'll get

062lucky and Hudson will even want to share a little bit tonight if he's still there I can't see but if he is I'd love to have him chime in but this is just a reminder of all the different things that kind of falls under that um you know category of flexible Pathways when we talk about that we're talking about dual enrollment online learning um that expanded or Extended Learning and work based learning work based learning as you know it's that's a huge category itself it can be internship Co-op career exploration or job Shadows so uh just a refresher for those of you that might be new that um those are kind of the categories that we focus on the most here at the school an update of the since the last time I think I

063came to speak like over the summer and the school year so this year we changed cap Zone um and so Capstone this year instead of just being um a research paper with a product we've decided to switch so kids can do work based learning experience they have to do up to 20 hours of work based learning we told them that they could do it the summer before Capstone if they wanted to get it out of the ways or during Capstone um and so we're running it as a pie with this year I think we've got about eight to ten kids so they're doing it some that's kind of like a blended product so a lot of my work based learning time has sort of been focused on supporting some of those kids and trying to

064get them connected to people um we don't have as many elos uh this year and we did change the way the course registration happened last year um last in previous years there's been a course registration form and on a spot they're saying yeah I want to do a flexible pathway with them a chance for them to choose like one so that they could get put into their schedule the way it was done last year is there was like a schedule and kids had to circle what they wanted and there was no place for them to put it in so we had to rely on them sort of writing it in if they remembered so I think that had a little bit of an impact on it um just the way the schedule kind of panned

065out this year uh did hasn't lent itself um for kids very well I guess there's just um limited choices for them to take certain things and lots of like tight schedules for kids so live and learn I'm sure we'll be talking about it as the year goes on and and how to change that later um very quick question what does ELO stand for oh I'm so sorry Extended Learning opportunities thank you I don't have it so that I can see you guys and percent so just throw at me sure thing um we're I'm working on a career speaker series so you know where we would do work based learning and internships with our 11th and 12th graders primarily we're trying to do a lot of exposure for the 9th and 10th grade I'm trying to

066plan a speaker a week if I can get people I'm going to tell you that this year um I'm having a really difficult time getting businesses to commit to a lot of things I'm hearing the same thing from a lot of our Capstone kids that are doing the experiential I do think that the the workforce shortage and issues are putting a strain on employers some I mean some of my partners that we have are our Community Partners have people like hypertherm they have somebody that does that or Dartmouth has a Workforce Development so but the smaller ones where it's just them it's really even just a strain to ask them to give up anytime more so than I think usual so it's having you think a little bit effect on some of what we're doing

067in the community but I'm sure just like everything bouncing back from covid that will change too um one of the things I like to do after we do get um someone to come in to talk about their business what they do what programs they offer how kids can get involved you know even during High School entry level and then with some schooling kind of all the options as we like to plan some sort of a tour or a visit or a job shadow for a certain number of kids so I'm working to get those kids out of the building when they find something that they're interested in front of that career speaker series [Music] um last year since I last presented we bought some TVD monitors and we put them in the senior lounge or

068senior area and up in outside the Hub and we're doing a lot more to try to promote a lot of the Extended Learning opportunity programs that kind of come my way both here locally and internationally and community service opportunities I also go ahead if anyone reaches out to me and tell me that they're looking you know to hire or they have a job opening I'll post that as well because I think jobs can be a great way to actually do some career exploration and last year I was able to get a a burn Grant so that we could start to provide some scholarships with that money for kids that want to do some of these programs for example like Governor's Institute in the summer generally has the cost for most kids and I think a

069lot more kids could do it if we made some scholarship money available so I was able to get a grant so that kids could try to participate in the things that they're kind of getting knocked out of because of the cost so I think we're in pretty good shape seeing as like last spring was really the last first time in a while that we'd really been able to place kids in the community and place kids in internships and sort of get back to pre-pandemic Life as we know it in the work work based learning world so are there any questions before I go to the next slide yeah I have a just one other quick one could you mentioned hypertherm could you give an example of some of the other uh like local businesses or

070organizations that students have been uh been going to and working with uh yep actually I think that was just what my next slide was actually thank you perfect very cool yeah so these are ones that uh either people and or businesses that have done something with us I would say since [Music] um January February of last year um we have quite a few people and I know I'm probably forgetting some I was trying to go through all my lists as I was making there's a quite a few people locally uh other than hypertherm Red River I try to Target businesses that are large employers like Simon Pierce that have a variety of um openings you know that can get kids involved right away um and that would take a kid right out of high school

071but also has places for them if they were to go get some College and Career and of course I want kids just like all of you to stay in our area um so I try to focus on local but then again you know we do like to share things like Red River and other things that um where there might be potential for them to at least you know travel in New England even with hypertherm so these are some of the the folks that I've had either coming in for a speaker or I've done job Shadows or I've done tours or field trips and or uh specific people that are working on some elos with some of our students as well awesome yeah it's a really great diversity of different kinds of opportunities reflected here so

072so good to see you all right I've got a question too um and that is because we heard from Audrey earlier and because that was a class-wide project what what uh what actually happened to the the uh lost colonists of Roanoke I wondered whether you have any opportunities for students to gain access to the Center for cartoon studies uh with them before I was to say I haven't had a student interest in in that within the last six months but I do have a contact there and they've always been open and receptive when we've reached out to them and getting kids up there so yes the last time I think we had someone actually go there was before the pandemic but if someone expressed an interest I feel pretty confident that we could make that

073connection I wouldn't just using that as an example um how would a tuition for the classes there uh be taken care of or um or is it they Shadow a cartoonist I mean how what would that look like um I mean it doesn't have to be that program in particular but yeah well I would say for some of the classes just kind of like some of our the kids that take you know classes at River Valley and even some of the programs that the kids do um I promote a ton of programs and quite a few of them have a cost I mean I wish we could cover the cost for all of them but that's why I I um opted to try to get the grant the burn Grant so they could at least

074try to equitably help out some kids um I've started with a single 500 scholarship because that was kind of an average number for some of the workshops and courses that kids wanted to take when Makerspace was offering them or the Upper Valley some of the Upper Valley um uh like the Ava gallery and some of those they were all within that range but some of the more expensive ones unfortunately that's going to fall back on to the family um unless I can do some more grant writing and get a bigger agreement foreign what about the money the monies that the state offers for students for high school students um to take additional classes um that's they all students have access to uh two vouchers and we make sure that all students I regularly get in

075front of the kids and talk about all the options the graphic that I shared and at the end of the year I also do a survey with all of the kids and try to get my pulse on what kids are interested and what opportunities um and then I connect them the kids that are interested in doing enrollment with the information on how to set up your dual enrollment account how to register with CCV you know what's the timeline for the process so um that is something they can access that those are college level classes so that money is specific for participating programs with the dual enrollment Vermont system um most of our kids do uh CCV programs because they're online CCV is pull away does the most do enrollment of anywhere at least in our

076immediate area we have had some kids do them through Middlebury and stuff and it was real awkward and clumsy but um they all have access to that and we'll use them but a lot of kids until they're seniors when I'm not sure they're ready for uh to take a college class and I want to encourage them to try some other opportunities and make sure that they're ready so that they don't waste those opportunities um they're great I think for a senior that's thinking about going to college that wants to see what it's like if they're great for kids that know that they're going to college that want to get some extra college credits but they are college level courses so unfortunately they're not for that opportunity really isn't equitably accessible for everybody I would I

077would say in my personal opinion no I think that they're also available for classes in community college and that's CCD yes so some of these classes are Career Technical classes they're not necessarily in you know academic based classes I mean high level classes but they're for students who are interested who may want to be a carpenter who may want to be an electrician or a graphic artist so I think that it's something that should really be pushed for all kids and I I you know I don't think so you want to wait till students senior year I I keep on hearing of some students being able to graduate and I know that it's not every student but with an associate's degree before going in and so I'm just saying whatever opportunities we can make you

078know afford to our students it's yeah we want to go there yeah CCV um there's some really good computer networking Microsoft classes in those but for um votec type of classes they don't have anything no and the students aren't allowed to take every level classes they can only take the intro classes that like you would sign up as a freshman so some of the really good classes I they have prerequisites that our students wouldn't have met so they don't have access to the entire catalog unfortunately so I we trust me we do I share it with all of them they hear it four years in a row and I wish more would take advantage of it just because since we have a small staff they have limited we have limited things that we can offer

079just by how many teachers we have and um and being a small school um and this is my fifth year and I would say that [Music] um unless the student excels in their current classes in terms of rigor and expectations most have been challenged by the CCV classes not all and there's always surprises but I've also had accelerated students that have struggled so I think it depends on the class and we don't really have a way where they're like oh this is one that's a good one for a kid that might you know it's kind of going blind as well so but we do offer and encourage all students that are interested and I have had a few um actually I work closely with higher ability formerly Voc Rehab and I've had a couple of

080the Voc Rehab students that were working with higher ability actually take some of the career and college readiness courses and so those are ones that I would push quite a few of our kids that were um needing something different that we've had success with that class specifically and and an example because I I look at all of the Hartford enrollments because I do state reporting the simple fact that occasionally you get students who are fast tracked in other words they start taking biology as a freshman and then opportunities for them open up at Dartmouth or UVM but that really is the exception uh than the rule um they're they're occasionally is a student who finishes physics as a junior and then but to to take courses at Dartmouth or UVM and things like that this

081extra application that they have to do correct to show that they're capable of it yeah um and I think that's why I like to put as much emphasis on the Extended Learning opportunity and for those kids that um that might not be the right choice for um I'll do whatever I can and go to the ends of the Earth to find an appropriate opportunity or program that we can get them connected with whether it's uh Hands-On on-site you know Co-op internship whatever program or an Extended Learning opportunity sort of passion project so um I don't think that CCV is the only Avenue it's one and it works for some kids and it doesn't work for others and that's why we have this whole great big wheel of options for folks so um I tried to

082do what I can to get to know the kids so I can do my best and I work with you know Jessica Vivian at the school and others we have committee meetings to see if we can figure out what's going to be the right sort of pathway and choice for those kids and and expose them to as many options as we possibly can and like students who I I I love your example of want to go say become a carpenter or an electrician yeah and that's really a path to go to the low tech center and both Springfield and in the Hartford folk Tech Center uh does their own placement of of work right yeah exactly so with my career speakers I'm working to help kids hopefully expose them enough that they can make that

083decision for their Junior and soon senior year and you're correct when they get to one of our tech centers both are fabulous I work actually with um both of their work based learning coordinators regularly to help find things for some of our kids that like for example may have been interested in the medical field but didn't end up at the tech center but we still want to provide them with um access opportunities to connect in that area even if they don't end up in Hartford or electrician or um the trades so it can be an either or or both sort of thing uh I see that your hand is up and then uh Hudson I was just going to say um I always love the opportunity to say that I love Kim she really is

084a big part of how Bryce got kind of got on his path and just to kind of talk to what Bill said a little bit so Bryce had the opportunity to go as a Tech student to Springfield in his junior year because of his earnings of credits along the way he was a little accelerated so he was able to get with Kim and she helped him really take full advantage of as a senior fresh his fall semester of his senior year he was able to take advantage of those CCV courses and then even though he went away to the academy in his second semester he actually was able to take another course as a um it's a flex course where you do it at your own pace so he was able to do it quickly

085and get it done before he left so Kim was able to help get him pointed in the right direction with his advisor so he was able to also get that done even through a the early part of his spring semester so I can't say enough about Kim and all those opportunities and although Bryce had the criminal justice in the tech center in Springfield he actually is taking his course load at CCV in I.T because that's a big component of the of the law enforcement world that's going to be in the future so um he's kind of that that two-part person that he has a criminal justice Focus obviously being a police officer but he actually is taking his coursework with the computer I.T work um and Kim also arranged for him to do a Red

086River over the summer like six week internship type thing and they hooked him right up with a laptop it was a fabulous opportunity so all of those things come under that and umbrella so for kids that want it it's definitely out there and and they are hearing about it all the time so you know hopefully they'll continue to take advantage because it's really good for kids it gets them on a fast track I mean Bryce is just barely out of high school and he's already had two semesters of college so he's he's very very fortunate so we're thankful thank you Wendy no I've had a lot of opportunities with the flex Pathways um my first ELO I actually got I'm getting most of my heart credits for doing a podcast and then I'm entering with

087um Elizabeth Burroughs um uh we're working on possibly writing some legislator that could have an impact and I've been surveying kids and it's really been a great opportunity for me to have a say in my education and to get credit for doing things that I think are interesting so yeah I it's really a big it's a big impact on me when did you start um thinking about um doing classroom outside of the traditional classroom what would what are we talking Middle School are we going to high school the podcasting kind of started when I was in eighth grade so kind of over the summer like in between the 8th and 9th grade that was kind of like uh oh I could do this and get credit for it and that's what I think I think

088that we want to start really um talking to our students in the eighth grade I think I mean I think that we should start earlier but I really think we want to start getting them out there um yeah eighth grade I don't think I don't want to wait till um junior senior year because we kind of at that point we kind of know that there's that rush to like you know get out of school and do something with your life you know but eighth grade that's a great time to just explore what do I want to do yeah I agree I think I think starting to make those connections early on between the work that happens in the school setting in the classroom and and what's available out of the community put Hudson on the

089spot here again because you do so much but I mean you uh intern with Windsor on air too right and uh connect my connections through Lindsay rotary which is awesome scope thing kind of Bridges the Gap and we want to have opportunities for all these students and as as long as there's connections and there's doors as long as there's someone to help bridge those gaps there's always going to be opportunities Melissa that's in the closer thank you Kim that was very informative thank you I have just a couple more things one I completely agree about the eighth grade and Middle School um and I I believe that's even in our strategic plan and we've been talking about that for years and actually 2020 uh right before we went out on the pandemic we were working

090with careers click to do the eighth grade job shadow so that year we have we're working to try to back things up and start some of this career exploration in the eighth grade you know so much changed and my world in terms of career exploration and working with businesses since the pandemic and so many ways but I really do hope that we can get back to thinking about how to how to continue to back this up I I had had a lot of discussions about that and I'd like to revisit them and continue because I believe that you know even starting in ninth grade without any sort of career exploration programming before that really is putting kids at a disadvantage and even the state agrees and there's lots of studies behind that but I can

091share this PowerPoint because it does uh continue to go on about what who's doing what some currently if you wanted to know and how many online classes because Kate asked me to do that but I can stop here if if you guys have no more questions that was very informative thank you thank you very much Kim thanks great thanks Kim thank you that's really short I am prepared for I can I can oh thanks John um so I I'm just gonna go I'm going to highlight um a couple things from the report I gave with the SD meeting but um also some specific things for John Scott new when you get the presentation my other presentations linked if you want it um so there was a question from a Community member about the and it's

092not Turf I've learned it's the outdoor grass that's on the playground um on the State State Street side where the younger kids play um and there was concern that there might be some unsafe materials in in that outdoor carpet I guess we'll call it so I talked to Jim who uh did some digging we contracted with ulti playgrounds to install the x-grass in 2011. and we did get the material safety data sheet which is the MSD s and um in that report which is in the board portal you will see that that indicates the grass is saved there was a question if there are any comments going to have something or pfos um and there are not and we actually uh didn't rely on the material safety data sheet we we spoke to the company

093to to confirm it so thank you very much yes and also um uh does it have a light does it have a life expectancy I I don't know we did not ask that but we can't ask that um it I mean it seems to be in pretty decent shape when I'm out there but um I can ask about that well I think that's that type of covering is a really good solution for that level of use yeah if that was yeah I remember the old State Street School and what was out there well we had tar yeah and we can't travel and so that was it there's no way anyone was there was no grass gotcha and out there on the Bob Parker next to the building of Bob Green if we didn't have complete

094chaos they'd left us alone well we were happy to get the report that it's ready yeah but it would be interesting to know yeah the life expectations yeah Amy I see your hand thank you so the question of what was there before that um the grass carpet in the winter it was an ice rink which it wasn't level so you were sliding it you know it was at an angle and you never knew quite which way you were going to fall in the spring and in the fall before it would freeze it was a mud pit and when it was dry it was gravel and just this is pretty significantly better yes I think I'm the right age to have been a student at all of these various different iterations of this and this does

095seem like the best stuff it can be pretty precarious good to know um and just on that note just to update you we are on schedule for Radon and PCB testing spring of 24. um where Jim is really pushing uh for the for the testing to be done in the summer of 23 or summer of 24 because as you may have heard I mean when you when you do this test when school's in session and you get the news that you have to close classrooms it's pretty disruptive um and this has happened to some schools in the state I think that um the process is taking a lot longer than the state anticipated and the funding for mitigation will come through by that time yes so um so just just to let you know um

096that's still on track for that time um just a quick update on moving division forward you've heard a lot of exciting work going on in the supervised reunion this evening I just can't tell you how proud I am of this administrative team they are um invested and passionate about student agency and voice of choice and you can see the impact of that just um just in the kids when they come and talk to you so we had our first session with Mike Nicholson he was here October 6th he did a parent advisory Council group with a really he focused that group it was more information on the self-driven child and the impacts that has on mental health and motivation and student engagement and then we had a community session um where we really reviewed the

097Strategic plan with a group of people um and recognize that you know we are doing the work we are in track but there may be some things that have um that have changed since we wrote that plan we might need to tweak it a little bit so that was interesting and he'll be back in in December for the second round we my favorite part was the student group that he met with for an hour on Friday we fed him lunch and they did a little activity which was pretty interesting to watch Mike took them through you know different uh school you know occurrings like homework so what's the student perspective around homework and what do you think the staff perspective was around homework from the kids point of view he's going to compile all of

098that information and share it out with us um it'll be interesting to see what we learned and then the students joined us in the afternoon we had a PD session with staff and that was a self-selected PD session staff who were there wanted to be there and we really groups went through reasons why we we feel like student agency is important and so we'll also get that information from the group as well and what is the what's the date for the December December 5th I believe is the next one and you know we had a fair amount of people sign up there were some things that happened within the community and some people weren't able to make it but they did reach out and and we should have more people next time which is great

099I believe it's December December and we do have um Kim is on Kim is part of the planning team that Matt that meets with Mike Nicholson the leadership team um prior to the sessions to kind of help us figure out what we're going to do what's most important so there are a few staff members that are helping with that um the next one's at Wethersfield yep Wethersfield school and he'll repeat those four groups working with those four groups which is exciting um it all ties into what we're trying to do uh that just the last I just let you know we do have a vaccine clinic coming up on the um 23rd of October here at the school they're mobile units we had one at Wethersfield this weekend they did 80 shots um on on

100Saturday or Sunday do you need an appointment no just come um and I did hear from Elizabeth they do have the flu shot as well we weren't sure that we're going to get that yet so great that's here yeah we're very excited about that we kind of want every look um all three of our districts um this month and thanks to our nurses for helping um work through that and figure that out and schedule it and promote it um and just to let you know we are really working on our staff Wellness trying to make sure our staff feel appreciated well taken care of we know that teaching is a very stressful job it doesn't get easier it's harder but we have an incredible staff here and just want to support them and hear them

101and listen to them um and I just listed a few things we're trying to do to ensure that they are well we do have some great programs through beehive which is the Vermont Education Health Initiative a lot of people sign up and do these programs uh Colleen's the Moana show the report next at the next meeting on what the wellness team is doing and how behind plays into that we have our employee assistance program that staff can access we're doing stuff free lunch on Wednesdays which people really really appreciate um we're trying to give teachers more time that is one thing that they always say is is something they don't have enough of to do the job so Mondays and Fridays that collapse time is really Theirs to schedule um it's not enough but it's

102something and I am meeting um with a faculty support advisory Council and a support staff advisory Council monthly it's giving people a chance to talk about things what's what's going well what's not also that administrative team meets with Union leadership monthly and again it's it's a place to talk and collaborate and build trust um so we can really get a pulse on how things are going um again we have a wellness leadership team callings the spearhead administrator on that and they're planning Wellness activities for the staff and then we're trying to do check-in support partners with administrators staff as well so just um I wanted to keep you updated on on that um yes Davis um just one quick question going back to the um the vaccine clinics yes um who exactly is that open

103to is that anybody okay broader Community yeah okay just double checking that's great yeah and the last slide if not for that's just in case for the discussion discussion it's a discussion item later on and that is includes my report good evening I I just uh thank you I and I I just want to comment on one thing um and that is um that I um I'm hearing from the administrators how they're making things work in spite of the fact that they are to it on staff and um that can be tough I mean you know it's it's good to be able to pull together and but that can also lead to burnout yeah and I I just I I don't know what to say other than that there there needs to be some sort

104of plan I mean you can't it's good to be able to say staff you're doing great you're doing an awesome job but there needs to be some sort of plan to say it's not going to continue this way because it is a burnout um it's a setup for Burnout and I I mean I I know how teachers are under enough and it's not only our teachers we but they're under enough um stress and and trying to to just bring that passion every day um when you're called in and you know to you know I can fill in for this can fill in for that so I don't want to just beat the drum but I hope that at some point in these discussions that um you as a group can come up with there's we

105have a plan I mean we don't this is not how we want you to work for the rest of the year yeah you know yep when we think about their mental health and yeah and part of it um you know we'll talk about next week just little things like increasing our sub pay I mean some of it is a lack of substitute teachers um to be able to fill in when people are out and people are are really good about um you know when you're sick you have to stay home and people are really good about that in the past they want to come to work sick right right um it's true we all did it but we encourage them not to come now um so so some of it is unfilled positions you're absolutely

106right and we continue to advertise and and reach out and try to um fill those positions with fresh ads refresh ads I mean we're getting a you know here and there fights but not a lot um sort of mouth put it in these letters um offer flexible hours yeah we've been very flexible with our contracts especially um the support staff contracts but we can be flexible to make it work or a working mom a bus driver who then comes in and works as a support staff member um I will say one of our teachers that leads a lighthouse team in one of our schools reached out this weekend and they want to work on um partnering with community colleges for Early Childhood you know students and being able to earn credit for subbing in our

107schools while they're in their programs which um I I said absolutely you know if we can do that I mean just just things like that but Rebecca honestly it's it's all it's larger it's it's uh housing shortage it's a lack of work force in general um in in the state and it's affordable housing yeah those are the biggies and child care so one idea that I had and this may not be the place to bring it up but it is the topic is being able to um offer District or Windsor high school graduates uh tuition money to come for for students who are interested in going into education to come and have a parent a Daniel is in the Bridging the Gap and there's a young lady there who graduated from Windsor high school and

108she's working as a parent uh so I I think that's a contractual issue but those are the type of things that we could create to create opportunities for our students who are graduated but also create opportunities here that's similar to what the hospital did at some point they created this health program for it's not an LPN program but a program that would allow high school students to um within a six-month period um work in the hospital doing certain things and as you said maybe para responsibilities that if they were to take specific courses just like the hospital did for six months it's yeah I think we want to think out of the box there's no box right yes we work our part of the bill is called grow your own and uh how to do

109it healthcare workers and also teachers yeah and um so there's all kinds of Provisions for people who want to get right into the workforce you can't get right into the workforce who and who need tuition assistance or need you know whatever they need scaffolding all the way up and once they get into the workforce they're offered offered also continuing education I mean and you know we can do also like we'll do this for you but then you always like two years like you know that's the thing I think with the healthcare uh you owe two years I think with teaching you also of course yeah uh and you're good or you have to pay back um uh but that doesn't help the housing problems well it does in a way in that if we offer

110these opportunities for our students within the issue the reality is they have houses okay the fact is that yeah at 18. I was not granted I was a breaking agent I thought it was I wasn't really ready to go to college but I was made to go to college because I was told I just had to go to college but the reality is you know my my oldest son Bill he took a leap year and I would have enjoyed doing working someplace he said you know doing nothing but um in some countries offer some really wonderful you know I know Germany authors just really wonderful High School opportunities internships where you will go and live with a farmer or you know where housing is provide but straight into the workforce to do the work and

111then you're right bill at 18 it would be great to to experience what it feels like to work and develop that relationship with uh and the opportunity to take some online classes to earn some some some grant money from from us to when they decide to go to school to help pay for school I mean it's I hope it's gonna just mulling in my brain just we hired about five alumni this year and it has been fabulous having them and having the comfort of what they know about the school and the feelings they convey about their experience here um we've also had some students who are already reaching out about positions like you're talking about for next year after they graduate I'm thinking about how wonderful our staff is here whether it's our I.T staff

112whether it's our kitchen staff whether it's our custodians whether it's our teachers who are doing internships in the classroom I'm feeling like we need to put something together like a senior job fair here before they leave yes and it may not necessarily have to be I don't know how how we could do it without making it part of the contract I mean they if they for example if they come and work in the kitchen if they become a parent they would be part of that contract but still is there something else that we could offer them as a um a grant or a scholarship opportunity for coming to work within the our district or the Su in our whole Su there's amazing places to work in in many many different areas yes and Katie knows

113how to make those questions Katie I hope you're going to talk about master teacher as well okay so one of the things as as you're talking about this we have all staff have to meet in any of their title schools the HQ status um because of our Title One funds and special education and everything else so one of the things we've put in place which we could make accessible to students that are considering in their senior year coming aboard they could meet you by doing we a master teacher which the coursework there's over 100 courses it meets the requirements for title one for meeting HQ and the feedback from our support staff because they get to choose it's like I've been joking about it's like Choose Your Own Adventure um once they finish all of

114the training that they're required to do they get to choose their own PD and the feedback from last was it two weeks ago now Christine has been amazing um and that's something that's easily already put into place that fits into online learning students are current Windsor students could do that and then it opens up the door to all of the su-wide positions so it could then feel like you're talking about upon graduation can come and work for the district the before working for the district beforehand as a support staff member because of the HQ stuff is it is difficult that would be more of like internship and maybe some Grant funds and stipends for that but I that's so um because there's some of those pieces that we don't have a say in that aren't

115even contractual they're based on what the feds say we have to have for qualified staff Katie what does HQ stand for highly qualified um so our support all support staff that work in our Title One schools have to meet the highly qualified requirements and we have several different routes to that we're trying to have we have a lovely graphic on this which I'm not prepared to share right the second but it's um SAT scores already having 45 credits in college or this master teacher those are just three of the five off the top of my head I can think of um that uh support staff have to meet and right now they're supposed to meet it before they walk in the door we're catching up on that um and making sure that all staff will

116meet that requirement um as we're moving forward but that it kind of plays into a high school diploma no longer is the standard it's more than that the um but my understanding is that that how highly qualified peace is for staff that works with students yes anyone who is in working in classroom instructional students um it could and it can be interpreted different ways um not it would not mean um custodial staff or cafeteria staff anything like that even some of our intensive needs um although for special education that gets a little bit more interesting um but um the definition is is fairly Broad and it does eliminate a few of our staff positions that do work with children but not in an instructional capacity that makes sense so which schools in the district are

117titled on schools out of as I'm spending my work day working that data entries piece and then we really have to move on sorry that's quite all right that's a great discussion yeah that's it okay uh so there's a couple of the Early Childhood panel um I have applied for two grants and have not heard from that I heard back from either Grant so that is the status and uh as I was going through the agenda thinking about status updates I think we should have a section of our agenda be just for status updates so that they can read it yeah and maybe we could just put them at the top of the very top and just kind of thing think through them um uh so that's that and okay Middle School model parenting uh

118this came from a discussion that I had with Rebecca reisman um in which we were talking about uh uh we were talking about the Middle School model across the whole supervisory Union and maybe that is where the discussion should be but um we wondered whether it would whether we could close the circle of the Middle School model and all that you're trying to address and uh with this very special age group it is also a very special age group for parents who are constantly having to adjust to a constantly changing student we wondered whether uh whether it would be useful to have kind of a parent Port series that was kind of not outward but more of a circle like a facilitated Circle for parents to browse about and begins or or best practices and

119that that kind of coincides with what you're doing at the middle school level across the supervised group Circle there what do you think I love it I think more parent -e grade level parent groups um strengthen the voice for those students and at all parents are always looking for support sometimes they get right nothing happened in school today um but we could also um like one of the things we could do is and I'm not talking about having somebody stand in the front of the room I'm talking about having a circle a terrorist kind of thing but have somebody come and just pop through with parents ways that students are learning in school to cope because you know by the time you if your kid has gone through our contemporary system they've been given certain

120supports and I don't think that parents necessarily now that they are you know training wheels are starting to wobble um uh I don't think the parents are necessarily have a full understanding of what we've equipped them with what students with and uh how that could work with parents I think more transparency and what the expectations are in the kind of advocacy skills are we hoping middle schoolers are using who are the people they have hurtful resources right at their fingertips at school yeah how do we discuss common things like Middle School anxiety um adolescent body changes pure pure peer pressure what to do about the yelling I said the eye rolling hey audible eye rolling uh Middle School code for parents right right sounds great I really think it would be useful for our parents

121especially since you know they've been are supposed to be like assistant managers you know school and um but I think help with their own transition I think it's a great idea yeah likewise is it something that we should do here or across the because I've talked with Nikki buck and some other um I would do within the region and I'd also look at looking at um with Ross County Hospital in their map programs um um they do a lot of work with us already but I think they were great contributing collaborator in that and then they could also reach out to London so we can do some digging on the um status updates next month and and there may be Associated costs of bringing your facilitator maybe not but oh yeah I also I I

122work full disclosure I um a good friend who is a um child psychologist recommended somebody who actually this is what she does is facilitates this kind of parenting group for this age group and she's local and she's pretty local so we'll reach out and come back with middle school for dummies [Laughter] yeah right yeah it's not gonna I would what I Envision is not something sloppy and and again a person standing at the front of the room so you should have a title but it's likewise like that geez but there's so much to know there's so much difference between those those three age levels between the genders between they are very different beasts yeah and parents need to understand all of those things yes some of them are fun without any direction whatsoever yeah I

123think just having some support and some better resource out there you know wherever planets are coming from something that can be fairly you know responsive to uh to the questions of these would be great and I think it would also be educational because because like what happened what happened to my child yeah they just you know there's as need to set feel there are just so many changes that go on during that time real special time and that that's how my father always get a certain workers parents would drive up with their newly push them out the door and say Bill you do something with them and then they would work on the farm until they graduated from high school like four or five different middle schoolers Through the Ages and done that um okay

124so that is that what that is um uh this doesn't really fit in anywhere so I'm just gonna ask about it right here even though it's a p12 question um and it's probably for Sergio actually if you're still here he is oh there you are um we had talked [Music] um in our uh some social Equity Group that when we were sort of going through all the discussions about what we wanted the anti-racism policy to look like and I think it was Katie Ahern suggested at one point that one of our um I think she had seen it on another website there being a um place uh oh Ethan's also here yeah there being a place on the on the school website for people to um but word out anonymously about things that are happening

125in this school system or in the community that was received into one box okay Katie Katie I think it was in South Burlington or yeah um and it is actually one of our action items as part of the teacher leader which will be in our Su report next week on the slide so you're very prescient um that we're planning on on putting and working on a website or working on a page to be able to do that plus some other things so to be to be unveiled at a later date thank you uh okay that was um okay now we are very quickly as an update I'm going to address the Tiffany Riley agreement which if you've been following along at our last uh the October 10th meeting our board voted unanimously to let me

126sign an agreement um settling the matter with Tiffany Island it has not been followed with the courts so um but that was a public meeting or a public vote and so uh word on the street is that it's going to happen and I just wanted to um put it out there uh that um and we can talk about this as part of our next meeting for reels um but I just wanted to put it out there that uh maybe we should start thinking about um doing some of those restorative justice kind of community healing forums that we had talked about at the very beginning that we couldn't follow through with um because we were engaged stuff and so uh I just wanted to kind of bounce that idea off of all of you um and

127I can do some research into what what we want if you think it's a good idea well when we're thinking restorative justice um is that something that we would have even part of and [Music] um very I mean or you know where we actually I had I had spoken before with a woman named Lisa Ryan who looks in Russian she's a sort of Justice practitioner yeah or mediation practitioner absolutely yeah and she's already done some leg work on it but I mean we can't bring games with her until the ink is dry but I just wanted to kind of touch base with you all to see how are you feeling about it I think one point that came up in that initial discussion is uh in some way not possibly separate but to try to

128do that with the stir student body as well in some way yeah yeah that was one of the yeah yeah it's just following through with what we had already discussed okay yeah um and but having it you know having a couple um so I mean now that it's two years two years later so the student body is a totally different Studio student body than it was when it took place and the administration is a totally different Administration than when it when it took place but we still need to kind of go back and put things in their places and also um we were talking about trying to have a productive conversation the comes out of it right uh you know the community the community can take part in it yeah I think having after something

129that impactful uh and public I think having some sort of debrief at the very least would be would be helpful and I think there could be some some kind of community connections and learning from that too yeah I agree definitely definitely I mean seeing that all over social media was yeah yeah I think even an explanation of what happened like the outcome for the students would be very helpful I think so too thank you yeah because a lot of people are still alive I even have like a teacher asked me do you know what happened to her and I'm like uh yeah I just think that like just a kind of a debrief with it at least with the high school current high school student body yep would be really impactful thank you for that

130uh okay and I haven't heard from either Nancy or Amy thoughts I'm with you I agree excellent so as soon as I I mean of course I will let you all know when um I mean I think everybody will know that paperwork is completely filed in the courts um but uh and just for the record if you haven't read our minutes from our last meeting um all of the costs will be covered by our insurance and not by taxpayer dollars for the settlement um and okay yes um before well okay a support resolution um Christine would you mind putting it up on the screen I found the template for a resolution of support for our teachers and staff or what it's quite long um and we don't have to uh certainly don't have to adapt

131the whole thing um but I thought it would be a good idea to discuss this is to the one School Board Association no this is just a template um okay uh foreign as you can see it's a template and again it is quite long um I was just trying to make a bigger Scoops it is in the board portal can everybody see that okay all right um as you can see this one is three pages long um all right before we go into what to keep and not keep I think we should talk just briefly about whether we agree in principle uh whether this is a good idea but don't spend your time reading all of it right now okay right now whether you think it's a good idea in principle yes was that Amy

132I mean yeah I didn't realize my um microphone was on yes yes that's a good idea okay yeah yes I don't go ahead Amy I'm sorry this is Amy I think it is absolutely necessary thank you and uh we'll just go down the line built I'm not sure I I I'd have to read an example I have to process it against contractual language and just I'm not ready yet to make that even that kind of I think is a good idea I'm open at this point okay uh Davis um on principle fully supported I think I I it would also be able to add a little bit more to that time to digest all the language of it um I assume that if we move forward and get some readings and uh yeah I think

133so too and I think that process yeah and I've done again I don't know that we have to adopt the entire thing as it is written um because it's quite long um and some of it doesn't apply to our district uh Rebecca I I think it's uh I think it's a very good document I think it's [Music] um the entire document is very good right [Music] um and and it's it's focuses on students um on how do we support students focus is how do we support staff um which I I think is so important um so I I think that it's something that we should strongly consider and I would love to also get students input I my thing was that um in teachers I just wanted to make sure that uh it's not redundant

134with regards to our anti-racism policies right so we should look at those two things side by side there's a lot here too that I mean what I'm seeing in this doctor I'm not seeing anything that I find objectionable at all um does it also um mirrors evolution of the equity deprivation that's exactly right just for the sake of not adding something redundant yeah that we agree exactly um if there are things that appear almost forward for word or not like virtually the same meaning maybe we can parse some of that and make this a more focused document yeah yeah although because it's really good to just sort of have it repeated in some regards sometimes it's like oh I think they say that it takes something like five exposure I don't know if it's three

135or five they need to find that out but um before someone really gets um um is able to really understand something and so I in some regard I'm saying okay this is generator exactly you know okay here we go you know and but anyway yeah yeah I hear what you're saying yeah I mean certainly it could bolster some of the you know some of the equity initiatives that we are already working on so I don't know if it would necessarily be a bad thing to repeat the language I think it's more what I think we want to really look at what the intent of the document is yeah and if the intent is to have that bolstering effect then sure repeat it if we want it to be a slightly more narrow document that addresses

136more like a separate issue or an issue that we want to highlight slightly more it might be worth worth parsing that out but I think I think it'd be a conversation worth having yeah yeah it's like some some of it will be addressed in that form as well absolutely yep uh Nancy I see your hand yes uh it's very timely it's important it's it um it really says loudly and clearly how we stand and I think it's exactly what we're doing now and we're just saying this is what we want to continue to do and um just to stop any other any other ideas people may have as to what is right to teach uh so um uh let's just take a couple of minutes and talk through what we want from the document um

137do we I mean my to my mind it is uh it's my mind its purpose is to kind of voice support for our educators um and so uh I mean it also supports student learning and support I mean in terms of preparing students for a world that they're going to enter not it may be in Windsor but it may be in in Morocco it really supports student learning um so I I think it does both um I think that's what I was trying to say is I think this is what we're doing right now but what we're saying is we will continue to do this and our teachers are we we do support exactly what's been happening in our schools yep and as Christine said when the new education quality standards for act one which

138was the law passed in 2019 having to do with ethnic studies um when they are rolled out by the State Board of Education then uh they'll they'll already the law will support what what uh we've already been doing I mean a lot of what we've already been doing has been in advance of that act one education quality standards being rolled out so yeah can I just add I just feel like um to the part about processing it it's a lot it is and you you were all just talking about offering supportive programs for Middle School parents in this particular age and Christine's doing parent advisory groups and we just had our work with Mr Nichols and the parent advisory groups and I just feel like Angie would do his words of we have to go

139slow to go fast to process it because we're going to be doing our Equity audit on the curriculum and this is also talking about curriculum and I just feel like when you're asking for voice and then maybe in some ways maybe moving too slow or too fast we just have to kind of process it together and that's why that's why I asked today just for just whether we agree in principle that it's a good idea or or not thank you we couldn't we could agree that it's not the best uh way to express what do you think about that and kind of We could decide that there is something better a better way to do it um well as we go through this one thing that pops into mind you know if we're going to

140pass something and I think that this kind of has something to do with what Colleen's pointing out is one what are we trying to accomplish two is it measurable is there some way for us to measure what were announcing because if it's in a policy or an announcement can we measure that is that something in which we can quantify that yes this is what we're doing how we quantifying uh sort of reviewing this yeah quickly in the last five minutes there's a lot of pieces in here which is already in policy yeah well that's what I think we all agree that yeah um and that would you know again is three pages long we don't have to we certainly it wasn't my intention that we necessarily adopt the entire thing just parts that uh this

141is a template right it's not but my question at the beginning is this something is it measurable no because it's a it's just a resolution and as such you know is a resolution um I guess that's the question the amount of work that would have to go into this to make it something that represents our Collective thoughts about it right um is it worth doing I don't know I mean I I think some of the issues we've recently heard of um is this the best way to reply to that to just to show our support I don't know is there something else that could do it right I think this is a good template to then sort of look at and review I mean that's the that's the question yeah for tonight is whether this

142is a good way of uh expressing support for our teachers and our uh enter the student learning but um but also uh and both and yeah God please I would uh and I would just say I would I would hope that whatever however we plan to go about that mission to express to support our teachers I want to make sure that you're facilitating effective support for teachers and not merely expressing that was attention well that was what I was trying to say is um I think I think that documents like this can be a really great Catalyst to do more of that um and I think that we're all here aware of this yeah I'm not going to blow anyone's mind here but I just want to not risk having this be like a check

143box that it's like a reduced resolution and then kind of move on for but I think that if we can if we can leverage this into a broader discussion or or more openness on this board or in our Administration or in in the the school culture to responding you know being responsive when our teachers you know are facing facing issues um you know like this document addresses I think if this helps do that that's fantastic and I would want to look forward to that I think the question is what what is the is there additional policy is there are there are there additional measures that we can take here or that we can work with the administration uh you know together to make sure that there is some sort of cultural change and I'm not

144sure if this is the path and I I'm just what I would envision is a better path and I could be mistaken is an open dialogue with the teachers in the administrators in the single room to come up with a more concrete way for teachers to be able to feel secure to express their frustration a more concrete way to to emphasize to the entire educational Community what are the guidelines of respect around how you approach issues with your your child your the person that you're a guardian of issues with a teacher and issues with an administrator and those are laid out in policy but policy tends to be buried in some way I think in policy doesn't Supply the support in which teachers need so I think that's right I'm much more this might be

145this this friend we might be able to pull out a springboard but really um it's going to be much more to work and work while work to move forward into creating that scaffolding and from scaffolding comes a structure and some structure comes a a community that then can move forward with the desired outcome agreed on both very well said for both of you and I don't think they're conflicting at all I think they're they're actually dovetailing yeah thank you both um Nancy I see your hand you're muted oh I really think that this was is an important first step and I think Bill's talking about the second step and they they meld together but if if the community is clear about what we want on this end then we can move into what he's talking

146about which is it's totally important and relevant to both to this person as well as in there to be able to say that as a board we are willing to financially support this the question is as a board does that take it up to the essay board this may be something in which like the equity piece we started small within the district and then it spreads outward this may not be something in which we want to look at them the whole group move inward well but if if we're going to financially support this we cannot contractually we know this we can't I mean we we tried to give teachers money last year and we couldn't we couldn't remember that I I don't think I'm talking about financially supporting this through any contract or away I

147I think financially supporting is to be able to um find the expertise not necessarily within the district posted within but more likely outside the district to come in and help us accomplish this yes okay thank you so bill would you um say similar to what we did with the anti-racism yes we it was um several voices that participated in that that led over a period of time and brought someone in talked about what this would look like and and that group included teachers included all of parents Community okay I mean it it Frank what we've done within the issue in which we we've taken the uh the food and the maintenance and brought it into a distant life we did it with special ed because we were legally Bound for but I think when you

148think about building trust within a a community you really have to start a smaller community and then allow that to see what you can accomplish because the reality is each one of these towns these communities these schools are quite different and if you try to come up with a model that fits and I don't mean model it as in a final solution but to find a process to get there that fits every single School yeah I I have to say that um because I was on the anti-racism committee when it first started and it was we did have individuals from different communities and that was really very that was valuable because you had folks from Heartland from Wethersfield West Windsor who who all we were hearing the same thing and and all can feel like

149oh you know this is yeah we get it now and we were like all learning you know on the same level and and we did bring that out to the same larger Community but it was very valuable to do that to start small with a small group and they grow yeah it does outline curriculum in here and that is for addressing curriculum it has to be at the Su level yeah but pieces of it I mean I agree communities are different I mean it almost lends itself to the equity audit work we're going to be doing I know and we roll it out um in January yeah yeah I mean but I don't I think there's value in all the communities together I think there's value sometimes in this one group as well yeah and

150I'm not closed either one I just think you I feel we should explore both options clearly as in because as an Su Community within that there are very different other communities tomorrow let's stay on this uh if you all wouldn't mind giving it a thorough read between now and our next time our next meeting and being critical using critical eye and thinking about the other things that we're doing this doesn't exist in fact so that's wrong okay uh look at that I promise we look like we're starting to fade I am okay review of transitional skills U.S projects yeah it's a portal as well this is also something that I came out of a discussion but um Rebecca and I had um we had nice lunch and excellent talked about lots of stuff and so

151um I asked Christine and Larry to look at some of these um learning expectations is the large umbrella the habits of learning is one of the yes and how they how they are how they look across our whole system first Larry uh did a side by side of uh Windsor school or State Street school and French school and uh there was only one class down because I was bringing up to um to have uh just the grades inclusively confusing both schools so it's horse I don't think I can see all of it and yes sir here we come now Elizabeth he did this at um so it's k-6 and then 712 is just one sir yeah is that how you wanted it broken yeah um but it's not by individual grade level he combined case

152six yeah that's okay and then the total number of grades is included well the first question is is this something that you're interested in seeing um on a regular basis I thought was we could look at it kind of either every quarter or every six months but if it's not meaningful for you then for the rest of you know I I click into my data head with this so first I go and you know yeah what's the reliability measurement here is this a warm reference measurement is this [Music] that uh the same people will be giving the same subjectivity for our reporter so uh it's not like we're gonna have a new mix of people right um if we ask for the same data uh next quarter that was something my question is is it

153really data uh yes I wouldn't call it card data but I I think it gives a good snapshot of um if we took this and then looked at it a quarter from now we would definitely be able to compare the two sets and see whether there's progress can you clarify three what what are the inputs on this so the learning expectations um if you're in power school and you click on habits of learning there are different indicators under it teachers attach um The Learning expectations to assignments and support score students on them they are not um they're separate from the academic right in an assignment oh okay all right that makes sense yep that does Wendy I see your hand I'm just wondering if you can clarify which of these learning standards are they based

154on handed in physical Works assignments and which part of them are in the classroom um in the environment learning habits or is it a mixture of both for all of the categories I would say it's a mixture mixture of both depending on the teacher that could look different so so this is giving us a look correct me if I'm wrong it's giving us a look inside of our faculty's subjective take on student progress or student performance yeah I mean some of it's less subjective like how it's a learning might be turned to working on time yeah you know yes or no those things um what we've been talking about as a leadership team is um and wrestling with is these are not our portrait of a graduate core competencies right right which is really what

155we want to yeah and score our students on give them feedback on so um I did a Larry and I worked on a crosswalk to see how they align they align pretty closely most of them um I think there's one literacy is not really in our portrait of a graduate competency identified competencies but literacy is scored on the academic side of the report card so if that makes sense it maybe doesn't necessarily belong in the learning expectations um so that is one of the charges for the curriculum team this year and to work with teachers and um it's a job that will take some work over the summer if we change it up in PowerSchool but we do have two teachers working at the high school that are piloting scoring um the competencies instead of

156the learning expectations so but I think also it um you know I think it teaches voices yes and I think that's really important and it's just as important as we we're trying to get students voices to participate I I and I hear from the administrators and they do all different um but I don't hear the teacher's voices and so in this situation I I do yeah and I think that it's it's just I think it's just one way though that I want to hear teachers and I'd really like to see them up here like I see this new students but I I think it's it allows us to hear the teacher's voice because when a teacher sits down with a parent that talks about you know my kid and and how my child is doing

157in relationship and in what areas are they challenged um and this I don't know but can be a tool that it's that a teacher can use to help a parent understand a little bit about not only her child but also the school in general for sure I mean ideally you would want students scoring themselves as well right on these on the on the learning expectations they should be reflecting on their own skills as part of the learning process as well maybe that didn't happen and some sometimes it does I mean it depends but um ideally they should be kind of driving their own learning being motivated by how they want to do and how they you know want to show their understanding and success yeah I think as long as we are very clear about

158what this data is and what it reflects I think that it can be useful yeah um that's this understanding that this this is not directly reflective of of a student's grading out in those core competencies that it doesn't quite align with um what the um thank you yeah I think as long as we're clear and use this as another sort of metric and look inside of what what our teachers are seeing and what they are reporting on I think it's useful but I just I wouldn't want that to be it's a really useful way to look at teacher bias okay so if you went through here and split this up into certain groups probably what you would find is that across grade levels emails would be more this way and males would be more this

159way you can all also split up the fact that socioeconomic basis would the students on this side would be up a higher socioeconomic status than students on this side um that's valuable information yeah um however we did agree in August that we were going to look at different ways of evaluating how our system is doing not based only on standardized tests right and so I'm bringing this to you as one of the ways that we can observe how our students are really doing not the only way just like standardized tests not statistically sound at all but and we agree that but uh just as a way to yeah that's understandable and I I would like to see seventh and eighth grade old outside because when you think about executive function skills and then development between

1607th and 12 right um yeah I wonder I mean I I can talk to Larry about how I can show that yeah I'm sure he can um he put some tabs on here I don't know if you can see them they're small February Meg he'd like to report out again you're perfect excellent there you go figure it out yeah that's great and then if we could see a lateral comparison yeah at some point um okay that would yeah excellent oh my goodness uh yes and it's all pushing this word okay um yeah I'm a Mr success okay okay um uh items for Action is next um we have a leave request um have have just so I know have you all read the leave request and the retirement thing okay no we have not uh

161Michael Vivian yeah it sounds like Michael Vivian is already a done deal pretty much um Nick Vivian was a um one of the custodians here for all well when my kids were here he's been here for a long time so he's retired um and uh so yes it is uh hopeful that you're gonna accept that retirement request tonight uh okay I'll take a motion to accept Mike Vivian's uh retirement request so don't moved Davis and who was the second Rebecca Nancy okay um Amy has had to release a meeting so um Rebecca how do you vote hi Davis hi Bill um all right just tons of questions I know but it feels like it it's already passed so we can't ask it even Nancy how do you vote I and I am an eye and

162uh it is with tremendous gratitude that we accept Mr billions uh retirement plans and the written very very well and the other one was a maternity leave and uh is this something we have to vote on this is in the contract a maternity leave I don't think you have to vote on it no just okay for your information yeah um we wish Jillian all of us very excited good luck with those last couple of months yes more of an acknowledgment item yeah yeah um uh and I think that's it for providers for action and okay so our next agenda um hopefully we have a look at Early Learning opportunities which will include um uh I don't know if I should really even report out at this level this is being looked at the sea level

163for the Early Childhood Child Care thing so I'm going to strike it and um uh restorative justice oh yeah at least so do you are you putting that under uh so do you want any category status updates yes okay so so you just tell me um is that that is something that is a good example of an update and that's okay um I don't know how we want to phrase it maybe we could just parenthetically put it in there as soon Riley settlement and then okay um you can figure out how to phrase it on when that actually takes place okay um does that make sense and and the Middle School parenting we will give an update on what we find out thank you very much I think that I think that'll actually be really

164good um but again is this something that belongs in our district or at the supervisory unit that's the question that's the question um I think it would be good to have a video and all parents all across the supervisor yeah okay um but of course Amy's gone so and then but we meet next week so we can we can put it in the next agenda you know what it means Army out the yeah I mean the following so I'll put a note in here okay and uh as well foreign I can even do it as part of my report um can you say Colleen that maybe Sergio would be willing to I am going to encourage that leadership of the elementary students you're all doing the cafeteria can you do one for Albert grips we

165could certainly do something do we want to do it on a different month s spread them out okay yep they did November then yep okay we did add it as a um constant on the agenda so we're gonna go under public participation announcements focus on learning and hopefully we'll fill that every month okay here's a question doesn't the album provide does the owl provide a mean or a movable case um I'll ask I'll ask The Tech Guy Larry and because that would be great because uh who else we you know we don't see Rebecca or at least I'm here I really am here so would you like the owl to be in a different location for the meeting well I was wondering if there are two L's and if this is what in the SEO

166office is the other one yes I was wondering we do have one here if they're if it's movable it would be great for us to be able to go to Apple Ridge sometime too okay all right now I will ask Larry um can I just ask a quick follow-up is what building is Julian in sane okay is she aware that she could apply for herself to the sick Bank as well they could always say no but there's nothing in the contract that excludes her from extending that I believe what they can um uh I think we're gonna have to I'm sorry to say this but we're going to have to talk about our budget right yes yes it'll be a preliminary we'll be ready for it the budget they met today okay um and the

167uh support resolution that's all I like to think of at the moment oh and then [Music] um uh the tree just put a tree I'll put trees under discussion items yeah so I've got budget model School Board resolution tree under discussion and of status updates I have steps after the Tiffany Riley settlement and then they report and the focus on learning yeah okay and that will be on uh November the um 28th correct is that right it's the second it's already in the calendar yeah [Music] because this guy yeah it's the 14th sorry about that so yeah thank you all came here I appreciate it and I hope you'll consider coming to Western Springs yeah it'd be great all right thank you for all of you who decided to join us online and check out

168the whole meeting and uh you're appreciated and you missed the M Ms all right uh see you next time bye for now all right yeah uh Phil uh for a second experience I will uh all those in favor of ending the meeting sorry please say aye aye thank you
