001foreign [Music] um in order to read these recommendations to allow Staffing parents to make an educated decision regarding their home health for their children okay are there any public comments [Music] all right any public comments no public comments all right anybody have any Communications all right uh the consent agenda may have a motion to approve the consent agenda you all have the executive session unions there you want to read this first foreign [Music] anyone like to discuss anything there we go right off David aye um [Music] okay uh it's a report so uh the first thing uh I know Carolina Student representative has prepared something for us tonight so let's go first hello everybody um there hasn't been much going on since we had winter break after our last meeting but there are some interesting
002things happening in the next few weeks at the hotel I would like to share um one thing I'm super excited about is our first musical in as far as I know at least six years um so they have their auditions today and I think they went really well um I decided to finally see the stage our amazing tiles be put to use um another thing is that there's going to be a winter ball for high school on February 4th and I'm glad to see more dances make up for the ones that had to be canceled due to covid um then the last thing is there's a club called Ace club which as far as the advisor of and they are doing this exciting thing where they're having open tutoring sessions for middle schoolers and some
003underclassmen high school subjects and I think this is a great opportunity for students to get some help from a more relaxed environment and get other people's perspectives on how to help them succeed in their studies and I've also heard some people say that they appreciate the email superintendent Costello has been putting out about snow days so I just want to say thank you and I'm excited about all these new opportunities um it's Charlie Brown you're a good man Charlie Brown um yeah and I went pretty well it's a lot of middle schoolers auditioning mostly um but there's a pretty good turnout I think there was like 20 30 people there for auditions today so pretty good that's amazing is it I think it's it's over Easter break so I think it's April 7th May or
004I think it's a Friday and Saturday before Easter um yeah anybody else have anything all right thank you very much so we have a we have an item to vote on for a overnight field trip um is there any is anyone here to discuss that from the students [Music] no they're not they're not here they're not here no I I do have I have a little thing yeah well we can send it to the Lord right here um we'll see all right uh cool all right so the next item is what we talked about in December changing the meeting date uh when we left in December I said I talked with Carol about just the possibility of doing that right now so the thing with that is there's five months left in this category after
005tonight there's the six committee members there's I think I counted 11 or 12 additional people who are required to meet these names from time to time it will be Christy including Sebastian right all right who all made you know plan their their weeks and their months to change it for the next five months right now is going to be tough It's Gonna it's gonna impact a lot of people not just the people that come to the meetings but everything those people have set up in their schedules to help support them to get to meetings on Tuesday like I know for me personally I'm here on Tuesdays so anything that happens with the kids or life has a work thing or anything like that that can't happen on Tuesday so she has to work on that
006I'm sure everybody has something like that going on it would just be incredibly tough to change it right now but that doesn't mean that when we wrote on the next calendar which I believe we will be doing in March we'll be working on that probably sometime around that the spring for next year no reason we can't talk about changing the data then changing the time I wouldn't be against starting earlier because of what is the school business hours the days sometime between three and four hey I'm not opposed to having an earlier start time just to accommodate you folks who are actually employees waiting around three to four hours after your work day ends to then attend another two three four hour meeting that makes for a pretty long work day I get it so
007I'm not opposed to doing that when we come one of the time comes to scanning that personally I think and talk with Carol and uh I talk with words in that issues so this at the beginning but Lori's not here in time she had some things going on some deaths and personal issues in her family so uh if you guys could remember her tonight whatever it is that you choose to do in those situations if you if you want to do that there that's why Laura's not here but I did talk to her earlier the other days available in the week right now basically Wednesday or Thursday which is absolutely impossible for her so to vote to change a day to fix one issue I think it's just gonna create too many more issues so
008that being said no reason it can't be changed for next year that gives everybody a whole year in advance to the plan to rearrange the next year's schedules around that so if you guys have anything to say you know feel free to say something foreign for a very specific reason that cannot be changed my schedule yes I everybody has something like I was telling I didn't when we started here I had to come up today that made it pretty tough to get here there's a couple dozen people directly involved in being I mean how many people are at the table right now and we don't have uh we want all we don't have right so there's a couple of factors beyond that you know a couple dozen probably somewhere around 50 people that would be
009directly impacted Oz mentioned the meetings with other groups in town other committees especially the budget work that's going on I know next week There's a Wednesday and Thursday meetings for you know the budget and stuff but next year you know I'm not committed to Tuesdays upon the fact that my calendar right now is currently scheduled that's it so the only thing I would say is I get February we've already got a budget with seven Stone and that's a pretty we've got a robot schedule in February but I I'm kind of like Julie and again I think we're both very fortunate in that our lifestyles afford US the ability to do that and so I would be fine with the changing date mid-year but again I can't speak for all these people and I don't want
010to attempt to so I can see both sides of the situation and it's just a tough situation so yeah I mean it is tough while we've done stuff out of at least three people on the Canadian market and other ways to sort of help you out so if you want to take advantage of that please do um so it could be poll everybody for next year for the next year's calendar I guess like for this year I know in March I've got a few things scheduled for work around these days um April my wife has a few things scheduled well I guess travel you're right yeah yeah I do traffic work quite a bit yeah uh that's just me that those are the other couple dozen people and we've got 14 15 people just in
011the room now it's tough again things come up like I said I had to open them up today I don't know what to say yeah I think the other huge point of contention which I since last week was Laurie said Thursday no way and Jeff said Wednesday no way so that would be zero important not impossible but I certainly wouldn't be able to do this yeah yeah and then it's just too yeah so understandable I think when we get to Mexico and we can project it out for you absolutely you know I don't know how many people have too many things Beyond a year I mean [Music] sorry when's our last meeting do we know what so we've got I know we got the two in February blunt April we probably only have one and
012then I think May yeah this year but we have the evaluation the evaluation yeah uh the dates around the town meetings are always flexible because we really need to do something right when the budget this year we'll probably pull that yeah the town meeting will be on Monday so we'll probably need yeah so things like that so it'll probably be like it's probably like six more right two three four five six or seven tops so I know that this is good six scheduled right February is two week two in February we've got one every other month yeah but like last year we negotiated great for the summer [Music] so she's I think we did some Zoom Zoom here uh yeah so that's what happened appreciate you talking to everyone um just add that you know
013when it came up in August the thinking was similar like we talked to change this next month before so if the school Community does intend to make a shift to try to make accommodations for more people um let's not wait till spring to start talking about it because we're going to be the same position as we are now yeah well I mean wait till next year Christy when is that meeting is going to take place for the set the calendars um the school calendar is March calendar isn't usually on Sunday a little early you can change at any point yeah all right uh yeah I mean you know February is a lot going on the budget s uh okay uh some Community reports Megan um so I don't want to step on Nancy's toes because
014I know she's going to be going into uh but we've been working on two things at our subcommitting meetings and number one is the upcoming budget so this past meeting we just looked at the timeline and again I'm sure she's going to discuss it because it was in the drive and pretty much the gist of it is when we plan to reach with the different town groups um one thing I wanted to bring up to the school committee is we talked about how important it is to have spoken Presence at these meetings so Julie and I are you know trying to tackle oils in Berlin but obviously like you know and Jess and Bob and I know like um it's tough but Carol had a great idea of you know trying to get out in
015front of the community as much as possible coffee talks um you know just try and get in front of different groups and it would be really beneficial if School community members could attend so I am happy to take on a good chunk of oils and stuff because I'm older thick and plus the schedule that's where Laurie is going to feel the same way Jess I know you're working but I think the big thing is getting the schedule out in front of the school committee members and seeing just we want to educate the population on the budget and the second thing that we have been working on slowly is cell service for this building so right now we're trying to reach out to somebody that had tried to do it in the past and get an
016update on that but I just want to let the public know if anyone listening is on our radar and is being discussed and we're we're trying to see what we can do but as of right now I think this was mentioned before the best way to get cell reception in this building without violating any laws would be against a cell power in the nearby vicinity the safety of cell towers has been brought up uh not with our committee but that would obviously be something that we would have to look into and it essentially is going to come down to the town's decision is what I think or whoever owns the land at the end of the day it's not going to be so I think that happening should be explored yes and that is absolutely
017something I just didn't want to yeah yep look me into it definitely I think it'll be good I don't think so right I know I just wanted to add on to what you're saying means we were working on that schedule for the days of communities pto's CPAC student accounts both school counselors and so on we'll have that calendar too probably at the end of this week to Coffee chats out for that we also um foreign [Music] amazing yeah Thursday you have they have Berlin on Thursday Nancy you're gonna go over the schedule yeah I'll go I have it all right um cool all right so that's good for Megan um Lori's not here so we're not gonna do uh number two we haven't had babies yet but at the top call and uh Carol about
018their availability three people please all right yeah excuse me um all right uh Caroline I wanted to let everybody know about the interview process we saw the newsletter this week we're launching at those interviews were starting with surveys we'll have a survey coming out for the Tomato principle was coming Friday and we'll soon be collecting we put out information about um we wanted to serve our new treatment communities trying to seek representatives from all different facets of the community and we'll be asking soon for for volunteers for that we want to make sure Folks at the dates ahead of time that there's really need that commitment of all of those things that we've been volunteered to do this year we want to make this very comprehensive um John Campbell is really working with me she'll
019be having possibly coordinating the interviews themselves which primarily will be taking place here and so to keep an eye out to this group reports describing to do the survey for Wilson so you have to be scheduled everything happening as far as we interviews we'll be bringing those final candidates so that staff who are not serving on the Committees will have a transparents also will have a chance to meet the candidates to talk candidates and students as well because we'd love to hear from you so I will be involved on that level with communities how many candidates do you expect to make it to that that point now typically two or three yeah I'm hoping to put the rules we're starting early enough I think that we'll be able to get this is usually the time
020of the year when folks start thinking about applying for different positions so I think we're going to be right in the prime of that time so what you doing I also okay student selected for that you know humans parents will get involved primarily through the boards for example representatives from the future [Music] so we also have um teachers participate [Music] I'm not sure about that um [Music] I do want to also mention to you that the job description should be voting out tonight but a few changes in that probably would be the most significant one is the principles um job description the change in it is that removing those positions to the full-time whole year they typically in chapter 20 or 24 25 days we felt that since the principles are here quite a bit
021during the summer want to have that and they'll take the same vacation times of you know what you have available the same number of days will be increased slightly um traditional days but we feel that we need to have principles here whether with someone as much as possible for the rest of the news so that's that's probably the biggest change followed by John Campbell's position when we're having this type of piece available to you so his is the same principal position for validation foreign [Music] sorry I just have a question so for like the interviewing committee you were planning on having a student representative student council at the parent and then volunteers from this Council or what exactly exactly would be on this committee are you looking for the Tejano principle or specifically um it
022doesn't matter I'm just wondering like for the interview process who's going to be on each committee like sure well we have a whole list of those Representatives I can tell you that it's a hunter principle we have the condo PTO rep school council rep CPAC rep school committee members special education specialist rep and middle school team leaders high school department chair athletic department Graphics okay thank you and then when the the final candidates for representative for example students thank you we'd love to have everyone who wants to get involved with us that's pretty big already it's a lot of us we were trying to automatically bring it down but also offer other hospitals [Music] you need to be available for the dates though I think that's an important thing so that will definitely meet up
023the people literally well I have one employee I want boys versus I really am invested in this because it's it's like four I know it's like four to six two hour sessions within a couple weeks fans and that's what we want to do with that yeah [Music] resumes for the individuals and just planning for the process that's how deep okay good uh next up is director finance and operations Nancy budget issues hey so the first thing I'd like to start with is our Surplus disposal request so in the school committee folder you'll find a surplus disposal request form for math books and math you know the textbooks for grades six seven and eight and they come to a value of 993 three dollars these materials are no longer needed by the school since these textbooks
024have worked with books range from 6 to 19 years old so we would like to have permission from the committee to dispose of them through waste removal yeah you may be seeing more of this um just a couple years ago we would like the opportunity to share them with their school districts but due to that number you want them too old so just for the old school books are you planning on selling them or recycled these would be recycled they're just so we wouldn't get the 9 000 dollars back that is correct okay yes that's correct yeah the worthless because there's no thing we did some research around here we did that's a research oh that's fair market value yeah true you know I'm on a list serve with the other District Director of Finance
025in they're all trying to get rid of it so no one wants to buy it nobody wants to buy it all right other countries you know so it's funny you say that I have a friend who actually works with a school in a different country but then the shipping because remember um so you said there's a lot more items around that would free up space for teaching classes um you know would there be a website of maybe a simple page we're going to throw this away you know and just keeping all this stuff on there as you clean out the closet cleaning out a closet page on our pbrsd website more worth it more than it's worth I I we discussed this I just listened to the principles and this is also came up with
026an idea that they've done in another District that she had been in and I I liked this too and if knowing how much we have to get rid of um I just wanted if you want to share that yeah no I don't mind um it's just the idea that um in the winter we pay our custodians to be in the building on Saturdays um and so if we could maximize that by having um going through and having the Surplus items out on cap for Bes I would say out on cafeteria tables um and we just have the items that we said from um nine to 11 or whatever these hours you can come in and go through but by the ends we're going to recycle the items I think part of our hesitation is that
027some of the items are no longer valid in their research and how we teach kids and so that is something that we need to consider but certainly that is a way for us to maximize a dollar we have we're paying somebody already to be there because I know we're trying to remove best intentions aside we don't want to add more burden to the process right before any more happy to look into something for this and some of this may be more relevant to some materials may be more relevant to have a small you know that their new work I have seen it prior plays dying where you just post it on the website or books if you want to come on the room it could be good workbooks for the kids to work over the
028summer give the parents a week to come in and have an open table I've seen it done a lot more during the summer time um but that's and then if that doesn't work I mean after going through the tour and not I don't think Berlin was as bad but I do some of those classes were crazy in Maryland Bes was like there is so much stuff almost like overwhelming I mean there's a science lab that's just full of stuff so um yeah I I think it's a need and I don't think we should put too much effort into like if you want to do a web page or I like that idea I think get rid of it you've got it because as we grow we're going to need that space and if it's not
029cleaned out like oh we can't accommodate each other class or you know then that's going to create more so I like that you guys are taking the initiative on that I say I'm a big Urban I know yeah I wish there was a cheaper way to recycle um but okay so in your packet you'll find an updated physical gear timeline these changes that have been made are highlighted there are three of them the first is the meeting that we are having Capital committee that is on Thursday January 12th to be able to be reviewing the fiscal year 24 capital budget request this is an in-person meeting at the Town Hall at 5 PM in route room 226. the next Edition is a meeting with the Boylston select board yes are you referencing something on the
030drug yeah well yes yes thank you next is the Boston select board meeting that's on Tuesday January 17th at 6 30. and this is to give an overview of our fiscal year 24th budget and this will be over soon the last is a meeting with the Berlin finance committee that's on Wednesday February 8th at 7 30 and this is to review the school year 24 budget I'm waiting for confirmation but I'm I believe this is an in-person meeting those are the changes to the budget timeline so I quickly wanted to go over the fiscal year 23 budget so in your packet you'll find the fiscal year 23 year-to-date update it is at the top of it you'll see that it's shown for the entire school district and then it's broken out by school so in
031a brief overview I just want to let you know we're in a good financial position for the school year at this point in time as you are reviewing these figures in mind that we have several line items that are not in Congress so therefore the budget balance is always a changing number some items that we don't cover are repairs supplies conferences memberships professional development I.T substitutes and there's more much of the savings that we currently have are from our fixed charges which is our health care and our benefits typically these savings are from new hires who did not elect their benefits these amounts can fluctuate throughout the year with new hires and unexpected costs with unemployment we are also forecasted to have savings with special education transportation this line item is budgeted a year in
032advance and at times it can be difficult as movement and education is very common also the prior Director of Finance prepaid Transportation line items last year which freed up some of these funds lastly we have savings and positions where we haven't been able to find anyone to fill these positions or we have had new hires come in at a lower salary level than budget overall these savings most likely will not close the budget of substantial savings as these funds will help line items that are forecasted to be going over such as our increasing electricity rates repairs and repair store buildings does anyone have any questions on that part of the update oh no I also wanted the committee to be aware that I am still holding the November and December invoices for nrt so they
033did send me a revision um but I actually sent it back to them that I didn't feel that they gave us a adequate discount for the amount of buses that we have insured I have been keeping track of the days so I sent it back to them so we've been going back and forth but I just wanted to let you know that it's kind of been the worst and it still hasn't been it isn't humbered in the figures the full amount in what you might have seen and just a quick update on Transportation in general before parade in our last meeting I was hopeful that we were going to have a driver for Berlin bus three and unfortunately that didn't happen um nrt is still feeling hopeful hopeful that will the driver will have his
034or his license by the end of the month um I released the where is my kids app this past Friday I don't think the app is perfect but I think it will help families will need our district code and their student ID to sign up the district code was sent out in our newsletter and by a different email that was sent out yesterday a parent can receive the child's student ID from the school directly and then the Middle School in high school the student ID is the same as the lunch idea so that's something to keep in mind but that's not the case in elementary schools and somebody have any questions on that I'm curious to do the prior app you've had to have student ID as well with that number be the same if
035you were here I'm I'm quite certain that the student ID stays with you throughout your enrollment in school right yeah okay one of the other things that I wanted to briefly mention is in athletics I believe most of us are aware as to what has recently occurred in the professional football World this past couple of weeks it has proven what we already know which is that aeds are extremely important and they save lives I just want the school committee to know that I spoke to our athletic director and I confirmed that our school district has five portable aeds the aeds are brought to all of our home games in there and if there's an off-site game it's provided by the off-site school and if they aren't able to provide one we have one to put
036all of our coaches are CPR certified in their trained using aeds at this point in time we only have an athletic trainer at playoff games as this is what is required this is how I heard a discussion of the possibility of having us have to hire a full-time athletic trainer I'll keep you update is that discussion continues throughout the MIAA yes there was some discussion of the athletic director also being trained as well trainer yeah oh okay I don't know I mentioned that previously I wasn't sure there was talk within the school or talked with no in a previous meeting when we were okay you know or maybe not yes no I'm saying is there any discussion of like maybe including it within when their training or providing money to support veterans great um I
037just wanted to say on behalf of the athletic Community which I'm very much a part of thank you for checking into that um because I know that the parents on the sidelines especially with you know with cell service it is kind of nervous emergency um getting the medical personnel out there is Speedy time [Music] thank you very much curious her after school sports I assume the office gets a lot at some point like it would back in the day there'd be a public phone that you could run up and dial 9-1-1 I wonder if it's a similar something could be put by you know by the front entrance in all schools that you could physically guideline with one without access to really read my mind yeah I think something says that probably should be put
038outside of the school building because you need a key to enter the school building so if there is an emergency like a Paramore to run up I think it'd be more helpful if it was outside of building but the field is so far at that baseball field isn't it and there was an accident there like last it was last spring I think we talked about this and I thank God there was like a doctor and a nurse there right two kids collided to have concussion and somebody ran to the road to die online right um but there were like First Responders or whatever on site thank God but I mean like if you're gonna do it outside of school I mean that field it's pretty far right yeah right the telephone lines that run along
039the road so I wonder if the Public's public phones or anything of the past I know I I just think we got to get cell service for this school I just think I think huge I mean another thing we talked about too I I know it was like last year when we talked about you know active Shooters and we had that presentation by the police departments it's just so scary to think you know if something happened and you know you can't dial from your phone so um have repeaters but I mentioned but however Peter's been about to be looked into yeah there's a whole thing if they do that then they're out of a violation code for allowing kids to access it's a whole break yeah Paul's not here he's yes repeaters we did that
040was the very first thing we brought up like last year and like bring us out to the schools and creating that cellular networks we'd have to pay a fine because we're out of some code yes the school will be creating a network it would be an open network it wouldn't be blocked so the kids could access anything they could be on their phones all day versus if we just have a cell tower the liability Falls outside of the school so we could do it but I think that the fee it was like 40 it was like 40 Grand was expensive it comes like thousands of dollars Paul said just opened up it opens up liabilities too like if something happened versus if there's a cell tower I don't know not on the cells not on
041cellular service I think they have it on the internet are they available then it's right there yeah I mean it's just great Nancy that you know I've been in the district for a long time football player right um but still it is great thank you I had one more time so I just wanted to update everyone in the Boylston facility assessment so recently the office of Inspector General changed the requirements under 30p for school districts so it now says that we can school us that write you quotes for supplies and services estimated between ten thousand and a hundred thousand so it was previously fifty thousand so due to this change we don't have to go back up for bid um I spoke to Dan our facility director and he is working on getting us three
042quotes for this project so hopefully this will speed around a little bit faster that's to do the facility assessment now I am done well no I'm not a preschool teacher to discuss um so Janelle and I want to talk about bringing on um 0.5 an additional 0.50 preschool teacher for Berlin um do you want to sure take it from here okay yeah so we submitted a report um and we are requesting um to increase the current Berlin Memorial preschool teacher is currently of 45 halftime position our request is to increase that to a full-time position um we started off this school year with our preschool team with our halftime preschool teacher um on a on a leave um and then we learned later that she wasn't going to return so we've had a long-term substitute
043in position in that position all school year we've had the position posted is 0.5 we have not had any success in attracting 1.5 or halftime in person feedback that we've received is that um well it's a lovely School District left work here there are opportunities that are full-time and that's what folks are looking for so we feel like if we had the position at full time and be able to post it for that um we would be able to draw a more and more experiencing qualified candidates in addition because this is a very busy time for preschool um our referrals and evaluations for special education services at the preschool level um we are now projecting that we are actually going to need that additional preschool program in the afternoon and a full-time teacher would provide
044us so both of these things have sort of come up within the same two-week period so that is those are sort of two reasons um why we would like that and we would like to be able to open up and we may very well need to open up that afternoon the reasonable program in Berlin um this school year whether it's late winter or early spring I don't quite have that timeline there's a lot of moving Parts across with special education but we know it takes time to host the position find a qualified candidate and come into place Etc um and then open up that afternoon Peru school program for for students and families that they're interested in signing up for part of the current hours of the preschool now so um I believe the morning
045preschool runs about and I'm looking at John 2. thank you um so an afternoon preschool would be what time did you say it is yep so we would probably go about 12 30 to 3 or something about that so much it's about two half hour session yeah both these split sessions all the same kids so these are halftime programs these are two and a half hour programs this does not give us a pathway for a full day program um and it does seem as though there's some interest um in that and we very much are interested in exploring being able to do that that's part of our district Improvement plan is to be able to study and look at that closely that comes down to of course facilities members of teachers Etc because the ratios
046that are required preschool programs cannot have more than 15 students in them um so we couldn't take the morning and the afternoon program and make them all full day that would be too many students at one at one so we are looking at that um but it's a little bit more slow going yeah so when I'm talking about the projected name for Special Education that is addressing the needs for students with IEPs um but these are integrated preschool programs so we have a certain number of slots for students with and without IEPs and that's right and it's phenomenal both my children went through to Honda but it's a wonderful program I agree so financially if we were to hire another halftime preschool teacher at this point in time it would be an additional 18 000
047through the end of the year in approximately we're just so happy and you have uh we can pull that from school choice or something at this point in time we have a little bit of savings in the budget and I think we could sell your work laughs okay how many students this is for growing yeah how many preschool students do you have now in bro so um Berlin has right now they have two programs both run in the morning there's a three-day program Monday Wednesday Friday and it's a two-day program that runs Tuesday Thursday um and they're both running at or near capacity and capacity is 15 students so one program may have 13 and the other one may have 14 but they're very near are they unique groups of children yes there's an old
048robot there's so in special education there's some overlapping because some students do need a five-day program um which so sometimes when looking at the data came down a little squarely because it's you know are you having the same student twice um but for the most part in general the rule is that they are two distinct groups so it might be 20 to 25 kids ish maybe 25 yeah yeah 25.6 yeah somewhere somewhere in that range yes yes and I will say that there actually it was new I've been involved with the preschool in this district for five six five six years or so yeah yeah um and I have to say that this was the first year that I actually saw um one or more families opt-in um to both the three and the two-day
049program to create a five-day program for themselves but those are more the exceptions that they are in the rule it's the trend to watch and I think it's part of what we want to be able to study is also looking at a full day program and a found Day program I think when we take a look at that are we talking about a full day program that runs three days a week where we're talking about a focus program that lives five days a week so many different configurations yeah and can you quantify the interest you've had or share about your afternoon programs I'm wondering what this person could do with their other 0.5 while there's just more inappropriate yeah so um so a couple of interesting points there so what we would be doing with
050that um extension of that staff member's day and we would be opening up an afternoon program that would run Monday Wednesday Friday afternoon and we will then be able to open those slots up we would be able to make the slots open available to students with special ed services and needs um and then we would be able to open up those slots to families that wanted to tuition their child into the program um and then that running three distinct preschool programs for a teacher requires a certain amount of preparation consultation Etc so they're Tuesday Thursdays would consist of some of their preparation time having a special education license you know if they needed to lend a hand in kindergarten for an hour or so we might have that flexibility as well just out of curiosity
051and I don't mean to drag this one out but um so the preschool programs are actually um parents um pay a tuition for the preschool programs and they are um right that are like about 1600 for the two-day program close to like 2 000 uh for the Year this is for the year yeah so I was like 150 and you pay on 10 monthly installments but but is there a Sunday question is the same deal regardless of which program yeah and then the important note that um that Nancy was reminded me of is that um the program for some special education students need the program in order to make progress and there is no tuition for those students so there's a lot of there are definitely a lot of layers yeah and if the chair
052would like would be happy to come back and talk and more detail about how preschool Works entirely I know there's an item on the district Improvement plan to kind of evaluate that that's probably a better time what I wonder about is where's the line between education and daycare and you know parent interest in having a place to put their children full-time five days a week right it doesn't necessarily mean it's the right educational choice for those children I don't know what it is you probably do yeah and the resources too because you know we have a certain amount of states in the building etc etc right and you see a complex topic yeah so the waitlist is interesting um and um we have had a wait list we bring a weightless fairly intensely I was
053looking at that date this afternoon I'm going to waitlisted 19 just a couple of years ago that lasted all the way to the end of the school year um but as of right now for this current school year there is no wait list um and based on the applications that are coming in for next year um I do not anticipate with us we will need to do a lottery for the applications to make sure we get people into the right person second choice a spot but not this I don't think it will result in one I was so nervous so yeah that was that was made last year's first year my neighbor didn't put it on she was number four and don't be dropped the program it's a great program if you have any questions
054it was awesome all right uh anything else there are any questions thank you right on time come on chair do you want do you want to sit up next to me so my name is lisaquera I am the um science Technology and Engineering Department chairs transportation is the math department chair at Toronto and I do have to relay apologies for Peter Doherty he cannot attend today um as he is not feeling well he is listening now so I told him he's very nervous um and um I am going to be the voice of kahanto this evening so I'm hoping um to do everyone Justice um for the reports um to make sure of my accuracy is here and I hope okay um so so everybody knows it um and so I'm gonna move around and
055I apologize for the viewers at home but um I don't um it doesn't work um so um so in introductions again um Lisa Clara um and so I'm here to present um all three um Ela math and um science MCAS uh results um for Toronto grades 6 through 12 and we'll break it down so we're going to be doing that first um and I um I'm wearing new glasses and so I actually have to step back okay I apologize you're fine you're fine um Okay so the good news is is that our students and staff should be congratulated for their achievement um at the 10th grade level and at really at all levels I'm considering um you know the challenges that we've faced over the past few years um this is snapshot of achievement for
05610th grade math um for um 2022 at the top here and this is over time so you can see just briefly by the colors we're looking at blue and green um exceeding and meeting expectations for the school and the district um does far outweigh the average for the state and I just to remind everybody and this will move forward throughout the presentation um 2019 um was I had to ask the kids today I'm like what was happening so um 2019 was a normal year and 2020 um that is when covet hit and when all of the mcats were paused um 2021 was our hybrid year um 2022 was our um in this year and you can you can see we're really back um to essentially achievement levels that are equivalent to um pre-covet um what
057is changing I think we have to recognize as a district that what is changing is our school population um and um it is a wonderful um amazing opportunity to meet so many different students but we have to recognize we have a changing population we have a change in population we have increased number of Ells we have increased numbers of low socioeconomics students are increased in high needs students um it's it's just increasing um and um and those are challenges that we all need to face and um and we need to retool and we need to make sure that those students are being supported um in an understanding how to do that um the best way possible uh this is a scatter plot of achievement um for meeting or exceeding um um expectations and growth um
058the median or the average um student growth percentile for Tonto this is used to compare an individual District's growth and achievement with other districts so um you can see that um this is asked Mrs Hutto Green tejanto in this state um so we are above and beyond we are at um 71 for um the main student growth percentile and um 83 um meeting or exceeding expectations so we really this is a really uh very valuable uh um graphic for both um Ela and math because student growth can be calculated this is not something that happens um in science because is a snapshot of what happens oh yes yes [Music] so the chart is normalized around the state's performances is that correct it's moved around so specifically so the state is oh no no no that
059is not no one is not this this is actually scores average scores so so the average taken for the 302 districts that you know comprise um the Massachusetts state school system um this is this is where it lies it lands exactly on 55. it does what the 10th grade so it does slides and I apologize so this curriculum analysis is important as Educators for to look at um you know questions the test item analysis in comparison to um the state um and the state average and how test items were answered so um this line is how to Hanto um achieved in each of the test items in compared to the state and we are above all of um you know this the scores for the state um except for one item so that is incredibly
060important information for us because we then look at we take a deep dive into each item and we look at content or is it question type if that's really valuable and in this case it was question type um you know and so that's important because then we can help students um master that type of question grade 10 highlights to Hunter is ranked fourth in the state in that student growth percentile in mathematics on the 2022 exam 84 percent of the hunter students are exceeding or meeting expectations in mathematics so 65 out of the 78 students so that's really something um to be proud of our students um for that type of achievement and a presentation that Peter um restority um here for that presentation understanding the goal posts are changing um so it is harder
061to meet these standards um the state is you know changing the guidelines and change changing this scoring for these tests so this is eighth grade um again um we see that our school and District um is meeting and exceeding expectations at a higher rate than at the state level we see um you know this they're not the same it really is really about the same type of reflecting the same type of data um we're essentially back to um our pre-covered um achievement rates and this is a scatter plot for eighth grade um and you can see that this is no longer 50 50. um so it's 50 it's 53 .36. so um and I think it's really important we'll see this um in grade seven we'll see you know this is all the same Graphics
062of you all you will have access to this but you know looking at we're really want to you know look at you know how are we doing in comparison to the state so meeting and exceeding um we are above the state um and then partially meaning and not meeting that those that information gets more and more significant um and you're going to see those numbers increase as um you know we go to seventh grade and sixth grade because they're still doing math and I always find it amazing that people um are like what's happening and well they're young you know what I mean seriously and it's really impressive to watch the growth over time in all you know in math the growth of your time in science it's not calculated but grows over time if
063Ela and math is really awesome impossible and you'll see that um so we have oh so we have again we have 50 37 um and title is again above that state um achievement and student growth percentile um and we have sixth grade again you know you see that um you know it's it's the same but you can also see it it fluctuates with the state as well so um we are still um you know achieving above the average state level um that's what we like to see um but we know that you know sixth graders and seventh graders and eighth graders they're accumulating their knowledge they're accumulating their confidence which has a great deal to do with um you know achievement in math um grade six again we have um around 50 and 42 but
064again um mean student growth percentile as well as um percent meeting or exceeding you know um above state level um growth distribution this is a great um graphic um one that is not available um to me but you can see what we're looking at is um so you have all grades um the first line and then four through ten and what you're seeing is the darker greens are those um growth percentile growth in high and very high so those two darker colors you're seeing high and very high growth and you can see those bars um those bars increasing over time so by the time they get into um 10th grade you've seen tremendous growth and you are seeing progressively more greater growth and I think that's um that's what we're looking for it and this
065shows it um a great deal do you want have a great time right so this is great to oh this is the one we went over today so you can see like these are all like you know um all grades and then you can see from the lower grades up um you know growth and achievement are increased and that makes sense because students um gain Foundation they gain confidence and that is reflected in how they are able to manage um this type of test yes good question to that point are the expectations set in a way that take that into account now these are these are measurements against expectations whatever those are right so the expectations take into account that the students will show performing those foundations and what those that students are measured against
066so the state um I I'm I'm I honestly have never had that conversation with any representative I've had some um intense interactions with state representatives on this um and um Frank um and now I think to Ducks from me so um I don't know I don't know if they take that into account so for example I the person for um the Science Academy stage um representative who's a lovely person and very knowledgeable and all that um they said you know we are going to be you know moving towards a fully online and I I just fully online is just hard and ever it is really hard it's hard for everybody um and there are a few students who are really good at taking assessments digitally and she said and then who will do you take
067this into account and she's they're always on their phone and I'm like oh my gosh you've never been in a classroom for years they can be on the phone all day long they can do the tick tock and the Instagram and all of the things but you get them on a digital platform for Learning and then when yeah how do you do this how what does it do like how do you submit how like how do you Pro it's a completely different way of interacting with material yes and I wanted to add on Bob to your question so there are standards that they're expecting to me too many greater levels I think in the Middle School level one of the things we have teachers here who spoke to changing the pathway for mathematics so that
068they are kind of slowing down the process but going deeper in sixth and seventh grade foreign absolutely because they're also I think often times and you can correct me if I'm wrong I think oftentimes people forget that um brain development and you know cognitively you know you brains young brains are ready for certain things at certain times and you can expose them to algebra like you know and push it and push it and push it but until the brains are ready you're not going to absorb it they're not going to fully grasp it and be able to you know apply it in a meaningful way until their brains are ready and I think that gets lost in the translation and it makes me feel really sad for some kids because it it ends up being
069that some some students can can regurgitate that type of thing even when they don't fully reflect you know can reflect in a meaningful way but they can they can do the work um and it makes other students who who just they're developmentally not ready feel less than I think that's I think it's important for us to recognize that there's brain development that occurs and we have to be cognizant and appreciate that um to meet our learners students that were accepted and being pushed forward quicker those were the students they they would do well on the MCAS anyways but they were missing certain content because they were they had such a large gap by jumping from sixth grade to seventh grade algebra so when they went to taking a seventh grade MCAS they were actually more
070prepared to take as opposed to the seventh grade because of the standards that were covered on seventh grade tests I'm curious I mean the the type the little kids are the elementary kids typing essay that was mentioned you know you mentioned developmental stage like I feel like they're still mastering pencil and paper and then to then be judged on a fully digital thing like that's a whole other skill set I think that you're gonna find is kids move through now and yeah we're testing first graders online that I think really is still being reflected especially with Coca you know you get the kids you really have a little bath um but yeah I think you'll see that that distinction disappear over time oh yeah I was just gonna say that I could speak on the
071student perspective of you know learning difficulties during covet I think um I was taught that there's some psychology about where you study and how it affects your brain so students they were gone from here's a place where I know I'm going to have to put in the work and study to be back home in a room and they're like this is where I watch TV and relax and um there's a study that makes it very harder to focus when um they're having that distinction problem especially in you know adolescence yeah I just know that I've heard that it's higher and I wasn't going to be able to make it stage like if they're doing work in bed it's harder for them to be able to go to sleep for instance because they're breaking in uh
072the state which what is for what purpose so what is the math um Department doing so new curriculum is being piloted this year in grade six through eight um we believe this new curriculum is formatted to better meet the standards in these grades it is really important to understand that in every grade we are teaching standards that are put out by the state um we don't create um you know we get creative um but we are getting creative around what the guidances from the state the pathway for middle school has changed to align this address Francine was speaking about with the state Frameworks which allows our middle schools to schools do full expectations of the Middle School standards and be prepared for advanced mathematics in high school um as mcast the time draws near the
073teachers discuss the testing formats and provide reminders about test taking strategies to alleviate any fears or questions in regards to the exam the MCAS tests require an impressive amount of writing in all areas of the curriculum consequently the math department requires students to be able to answer open response questions in a correct format and that ends up being um you know reviewed in coursework the math department incorporates open response questions into their assessments so the students are prepared to answer open response questions with ease and the mathematics portion of the MCAS emphasizes problem solving very few items ask students to merely add or divide rather the students are given a situation and asked to solve it in order to prepare for this test daily math classes are asking students to work through many word problems
074does anybody have word problem anxiety I remember I did so much in the school like crazy um yeah um to applying problem-solving strategies homework assignments like these types problems as well as the typical calculation style homework students are given more access to online practice in Delta map I excel and Desmos so that students are familiar with online testing tools and that a point to this that funding for these is incredibly important these programs cost money they are essential they are adaptive to students learning and achievement level and we'll go over material and reinforce material where students need reinforcements and will move more quickly through material where students are excelling the math department analyzes the results of the MCAS as a team paying special attention to where they maybe there may be deficiencies we look at
075all questions that score um at or below state level and note where in the curriculum these topics are located to be sure that the material is being covered the math department provides MCAS practice to all students in the 10th grade before the exam and incorporates these questions into classroom assessments where appropriate and mcasm Remediation courses offered Every Spring to any student who wishes to attend the success of students who Faithfully show up to this class is substantial in the math department would like to continue in offering this course usually this course along with a biology um mcat's remediation um networks are both offered and have been offered through Grant monies Peter has has you know that was hoping that he that he goes to that this year did you hear that yeah so um after
076school that was after school so in so for math we take six weeks out from the exam and it's two two days after school um for six weeks so there's 12 sessions for biology it's been we take six weeks out from biology there's a one week overlap which usually is fine um and I have found great success with one after school program and then I do um one Google meet um usually from seven to eight pm in the evening that's been great and really allows for students to access your remediation when they're you know they've had trouble like um with travel and you know scheduling so um so now we'll discuss the science Technology and Engineering [Music] so this is um so this is um our eighth grade um science technology engineering mcask course so
077the top figure um is the um overall State average um assessment and achievement levels and um the bottom graphic is a Tonto and the um there's 72 um are actually um um 71 are either exceeding or meeting expectations um whereas there we have four the average for the state is 42 so um for the eighth grade MCAS are exceeding um with the average State um score is so there are 87 um oh yes in all these grades you know all these drugs thank you so harsh that's partially meaning like oh well it would be right here well no that's not true partially meeting is not not meaning not meeting is not meaning and partially meaning is that they're moving you know towards towards you know towards other expectations District set a standard where everybody can
078at least um so I would say yeah that um would be um in a perfect world yes um but um that isn't reality um so partially let's jump in for a second right yeah I know what you mean so let me click okay so it's not even an in a perfect world with all the children were perfect children right um what we struggle with you've heard me talk about it 90 major exceed by the end of third grade there are children for whom this test is you know there are children who might take the test because everybody has to take the test we know that they're not going to meet the standard because for a variety of reasons it's not fair it would be like especially I'm a lot on the track with you but
079I'm not going to be very bad I'm bad for him sorry it's not that for those children who don't need or exceed expectations are we doing our best for them what's their world I think last time Peter was here he was talking about the importance of students and you can look at those kids who don't need the standard but they're still growing at or above what we would expect in terms of like our scores in relationship to districts and White House you know our scores especially um at tejanto are really strong in comparison to schools like our school district and even in comparison to some schools from what people feel because they're bad or anything um I think there's probably not a teacher in the building just to think they could do better give it
080more time and more resources and you know opportunities because you're always trying to do that but the reality is I keep saying 90 is not really a very realistic Health we got to 75 80 and test like this in each subject in each grade we would be so comparing a lot of additions instead and apparent for a taxpayer component is compared to another District if that's mine but we still have a tour of the class at whatever level this year what are you gonna do with it well and that's and that's the challenge so you've got to quantify that sometimes it's hard to quantify these are available the 8th grade science numbers are really really good numbers you know this is an area where it's nothing more satisfied to what it's the challenge for our
081school district I love it don't I'm starting to step on your time I told him okay I got stuff to say smoke so I was like stay on first is to identify our areas of growth into articulate those effects we need to do we need to do that I'm an argument we need to do a better job at early University but I think that through the work of religion Elementary School teachers and the hard work that gets done here sort of much better place but you don't yeah improve the program and take better support for teachers in terms of professional okay we're not going to get our kids poor we want them to be you know Peter and I talked over the summer my goal is for everybody to be able to read the outermost
082house and it's a wonderful book about the cape and uh I think also if you look I mean if you add the exceeding and the meeting and that's 71 our meeting our exceeding well the other quarter is you know or three quarters are are doing that so and I also think that is important to recognize as um Peter had identified in the last presentation um the in in particularly um with science and you'll see in the next slide um they're changing the goal posts so students who were meeting expectations last year um maybe partially meeting this year because they've changed the delineation they can change they're like okay so instead of you know 230 um it's now going to be you know 235 or 200. you know they're changing um what it means and depending
083on you know what things are released like I this is the first year for biology that they've released the new exam questions past two years I've been it's been shooting in the dark like I have had no idea what the questions are even when they release so I was understanding you know what standards that we might need support in they were doing the same thing now as they were researching the exam they weren't allowing us access to what types of questions the students weren't performing on I could we had no idea we had no idea what the questions were now we're back to being able to see what those questions are so going back to what John was saying with this 30 percent I'm sure you know exactly who those students are so you can
084Target them should we get some statistics you mentioned earlier why is this changing is because of our school population is changing ell low cell Studio economic another episode we talked a lot about last year higher higher needs populations do you have a breakdown of the percentages we can get that information I will invite you um you go on and this is thanks to um Sally um Dart um and you can look up anything about the district our population um you know the breakdown of Chinese um well I can get some of that but as it as it's changed over time um as our population has changed over time yeah I think everybody understands the population as it relates to these scores is it we don't right here or is it spread of holding places right
085we can we can absolutely I know I can't do it by different subgroups right we can um we can download yeah like we also need to think about how we're instructing our students to how we're going to present you to communicate this speaks to your budget the three-way plans the portrait of graduate looking at how we instruct are we instructing the way our students need made that instruction over where they need to be Shifting the way we're focusing project-based learning experiential learning they're going to these classrooms because you're doing a ton of that pregnancy they're thinking about real world problems so that's how they're engaging more I think in reading the standards so we have to look at that piece of it we need to be able to continuously offer PD opportunities and teachers Avail
086themselves of coursework who learn more about content pedagogy so that they can instruct better so it's afford more opportunities that goes out as a science department chair of the coach and the other department chairs go out coaches to the sobriety are different they belong to affiliations right they'll learn about how to improve teaching and learning I think and then also looking we're talking about with math for example what resources are we providing that we have resources that don't want to what we're teaching if they're scrambling to try to say you've got to get to the standard but the resource that we have you know we have to build more supplementary materials that takes time so that's why I think somebody mentioned before when we see one particular um so in for the eighth grade um
087there were 87 students in the district um identified for taking the exam so 14 12 students um exceeded 57 50 students meeting 26 23 students and two percent of students not meeting expectations um so this is we also try to identify who the students are that we're not meeting expectations and understand who those students are students who did not make take the MCAS but were supposed to are identified as not meeting I think that's important so if they just they missed if they were absent and they were on the roster and they missed it so it is a test that wasn't taken and there were a couple of them yeah there's no opportunity oh yeah oh absolutely they can retake it but for that test year it is slated as not unit so there's no
088makeup for like two two not later not for that it's it's projected in a different like this is for this particular test take it this time it's the spring of so I can download information about other testing here but this is for the spring results of but there are and it has negative three days right oh absolutely don't go they don't go into the same pot wow it depends if they were if they were if they could perhaps one day you can watch it in the window they can make it up but if it was something windows no it's a bigger window but it just it kind of depends on the surface it's just been trickier I have a message from Peter yeah um we can absolutely break down if students are not yet meeting
089standards and they are overwhelmingly our high need students and it is in those areas that we can propose to our resources he already has the data ready to go for email that's what I was going to say too like the budget is big ger cases right so for a taxpayers and it's all about the growth right right so um that's great so this is the last um slide for the eighth grade again the test line of analysis how we work with the data um looking at you know what was that question I mean our eyes are always drawn to what can we do better what was that question what was the content area um where is that lesson you know how is that lesson taught what type of question is it the questions are twofold
090there is a Content component and there is a science skill component so every question on the science MCAS has two parts to it um so you have seen this slide before this was one of um Peter Doherty's um the first live he showed um it is the talent of biology MCAS it was the first year the next gen um scoring was rolled out and so this graphic and this graphic represents the same test um old scoring um reflected um next gen scoring reflected and it clearly says different you know tells a different story looks different um I want to do this tool I don't want to be this school it is the same test same students um same wrong answers um but it is now how the state is presenting the data so this uh
091you know is new this is the first year for my students and again um I have to you know kind of reiterate that the um you know the you know this is new and I've been teaching blind for the past two years um with this so you know they um and they they rolled out this information slowly this year um this is a side by side comparison of the next gem so this is how the state um is doing and this is how tanto students did on the um it says grade 10 but it's any one who's enrolled in biology takes the um biology MCAS um if they've completed the full course and so we have um ninth and 10th graders and so um our district um 79 um and we have 81 80 these
092numbers are different it's very strange I can pull this information and get these reports very tidy um and then there are different slightly different numbers and I don't know why they're calculated um in a different way um but so we have 75 we had 75 students taking it 13 students exceeded expectations as per that data um so we have 62 47 students meeting um and then 17 partially meeting and three percent two students not meeting so 79 of our students succeeded or met expectations was 47 of the state exceed that exceeded or met expectations addressing so addressing the two students identified as not meeting expectations there's only one student who actually did not meet expectations um and um we know that the biology test is a language-based test there's a lot of vocabulary there's a
093lot of language and it is very difficult um for young students to navigate that and the other not meaning is a heartbreak for me because it was an incredibly successful story that is reflected it's not meaning and that was a very successful very beautifully put together portfolio assessment on that past which is really difficult it's very difficult to put together portfolio assessments and have that passed through the state it was but in our scoring it is identified as net meeting so that's a sad that's sad for me um so this is the this is the final report so this is if you break down um the information and download the report achievement analysis by year this is all of the same Edwin analytics this is the other so the report that is sent out in
094District comparison this is the data that's reflected 81 of the students and now I don't know where they get the 81 because the previous lives in 80 and 79 but this is the same D Edwin analytics and this is the information that is in the district comparison so it's 81 students are meeting or exceeding expectations as compared to 45 um as the state average um Tonto sde next steps so um we review the standards report item analysis report and released questions um we asked ourselves are there any areas that need to be strengthened in content or in skills we review data prior to each unit and identify activities that will promote greater understanding particularly in areas identified by the item analysis report identifying models that are used as illustrative examples for each unit this is
095really important students really need to be able to look at models and be able to use models and um apply their knowledge to the models and then apply apply those models to new situations which is a complicated series of um events for them to do and so we want to incorporate these in similar models I was in the Middle School classrooms um and they were doing just that we integrate new question Styles and previously read these exam questions this year um high school biology can do that we've been doing that at the middle school level um we're using diesel reports as guides for creating classroom experiences um there are links here to understand what those are but those are um you know prescribe best practices within the classroom um that have been identified as um
096you know um goals for what our classrooms should look like um we schedule eighth grade review sessions prior to the MCAS um where there's a you know um review sequences that happen in the classroom and then I address the high school review sessions the discrepancy yeah attention but discrepancy between one percent here and there is District versus school school are the students that are in front of us District are all students who are taking a guess whether if they're from our towns whether they're homeschooled they're outplaced those students are included in our district graphs on Jesse so if you choose school or you choose District when you create perhaps that's the difference of the one percent right because those students are included in our district numbers right um highlights for high school I'm constanto high
097school biology MCAT scores are 15th in the state for students meeting and exceeding expectations I think that's um a great statistic to use um we are in the top five percent among the um 302 school districts in the state um results by standard is again this helps us um provide some information and Analysis um in look Force so now any questions on science yeah okay um it's p now I'm sure P we'll we'll hear from Peter um to Hunter Regional um Ela results this is 678 and um 10. so the 10th grade um same graphic that we've been looking at um for all the content areas um we see that um again that they are our students are meeting and exceeding and um expectations um interesting this um so this was our um our hybrid
098here and um so that is a wonderful reflection of you know that our students were engaged our students were engaged so it yes just a really basic question do we report grade 11 as well um so um grade 10 um or high school biology is if you're in the course when you're in the course and then there's 10th grade math and 10th grade ELA they haven't passed those and the counseling in order to get them out [Music] thank you um this is a great graphic to as an overview for my dla we we do kind of stress that um because there's so much growth that happens over the course of the history of their math and the history of their English there is growth that is being seen whereas science is just simply a snapshot
099of that one content area um we have grade six Ela we see um you know they're what is you know wonderful to see is that you know achievement levels um have not you know their their about the same their um getting close to where they were um back in 2019 um and I think that's important um we are showing the um our school and District versus the state um so again our exceeding and meeting expectations are above that of the state fifth grade and I see in 2022 it's still all the other ones are pretty close in 2019. I know when we looked at the fifth grade schools last year they also see me like I'll liar so is this crazy absolutely and we can see growth um I think there's you know growth percentages
100and um the seventh grade ELA um you know we're seeing um in you know um change every year [Music] so you know this is a snapshot of each of the um grade levels um but then we'll see growth and that's really um that's what's important is to see um individual um student growth um and that is the resource that um that you know you and Peter have been building you know so so we can work in a vertical alignment and you know really see a student's growth over time from when they enter school to you know 10th grade and Peter has a database he's built the tracks each graduating class and he said that he can share that with you if you'd like to talk and um grade 8 Ela again looking at um you
101know increased growth increased confidence I think that that's really again um you know and back to pre-covered levels um growth distribution and I think this is the same thing we're seeing um you know you know increased um growth over time and this again also so this achievement and growth so this is where the 10th graders are um and this is how um achieve you know growth student growth percentile and achievement moves over time and our students are moving towards Higher Achievement and higher growth um throughout the years that they are here and that's really what we and I think this graphic for both math and um Eli are um the most important that we see because we're seeing that they are um becoming really strong students over time um they are building a foundation in
102both math and Ela and I can and I can actually speak to this I just have had so many students um who have graduated who have come back and said I was so well prepared in college um I could write better than any of my peers um and they could navigate um you know their math and sciences course courses with ease and I think that speaks volumes to you know what what they um what's happening um this again is our test item analysis what we look at um what all of the department chairs look at when um initially doing curriculum planning and mapping looking at those test items um I highlights grade 10 highlights were 24th in the state for student growth percentile um 28th in the state um for the percentage of students in
103exceeding and reading combined that puts us in the top 10 percent of the schools in Massachusetts for both growth and achievement and this again is based in 302 districts that are identified in the database what is the ELA Department doing they are examining MCAS and other data to identify specific areas of need all grade levels determine three primary areas of need in all grades which will become power standards for ELA for the ELA department so this would be in alignment you know 6 through 12 writing topic development um reading identifying the function of literary techniques and text identifying connecting evidence from multiple sources and language identifying parts of speech and their function in text and this will all Impact you know how they're writing a map how they're reading and writing in science continue to
104meet the administration at all levels for vertical alignment um and continue to update Ela curriculum to ensure all major assessments are in line with State Standards we build an MCAS Google classroom for the ease of access to data especially over time and building reports for curriculum analysis three years that the state does not have available this is a huge amount of time um that um that is being spent doing this and it's really valuable to the district and um work that is important does Peter have anything to say I know and I kind of been blocking um the percentages okay any questions on that and there's links um in for different things um that you can um and then you think um any questions we're available by email please feel free you know to reach
105out but thank you thank you I'll be done in 20 minutes do you leave that plugged in that would be good oh do you want me to mine okay no no no this is the HDMI yeah oh and just have and there's as they're setting up filmed if I could just for a moment I know that would be I'm sorry sorry we talk about um we do talk about how um the staff how teachers um and administrators support students in success I would also like to suggest that we encourage our parents towards supporting our students and I think there are a couple of areas they can encourage their students to if they are struggling they know that they are struggling they would encourage their students to attend for mediation work I also think um is
106really important for Content areas you can have meters or parents to understand the impact of having students attend school on scheduling days within the calendar year to attend coursework um missing um so weeks at a time can be missed and we can't help um when you are sick but there are some circumstances that absolutely can be navigated around and I would hope that also committee encourages families especially the students who are in the past years to attend school during their calendar time that is really important it's really hard to catch up those students foreign absolutely absolutely there is absolutely and I've done that I've done um that type of tutoring um but I think that um it would go a long way just to have like you know support from all levels and not to
107have the burden like completely on the teachers there is that good okay I resisted here I could put my little Buffalo to find the Buffalo Bill logo um attempt to live up to listen to this but I want to take a second before we start egg to Echo your comments around Parenthood um what we always find when we do stuff like this the children who consistently do extremely well with the chair and services um the reality is that it's really hard in some families to do that and that's why we're here people should feel free to shower because that's important because you know as teachers it doesn't matter what's happening at the moment so our job to job um yeah I get it about vacations and that once in a lifetime trip to Disney um
108gosh it makes it hard when the once in a lifetime trip happens twice a year so just a possible we're going to kind of Go reverse order to what was I wanted to Echo one more thing um Mr Dougherty's benefits these are probably still listening oh absolutely um it's rare in talking with my college the kind of relationship that we have with the Middle High School where we talk about how the kids are doing in fourth grade and how that impacts are they're going to do it I've really enjoyed my working special issue with Peter around English and language arts which you know we all know when you order me go I'm not about and I'm going to go on and on again tonight even though somebody's hogged a lot a lot like 20 minutes
109so we'll start with language arts I also wanted to just recognize really quickly uh Joe exploring our math coach who is here you've got my report so I'm not going to go into the same level of detail as is my high school friends did um but if you have questions as we go along or at the end that's fine we're really quickly one lesson before we start I told myself because you're going to give me some assessment thoughts and testing does not measure the worth of children schools it is one test given at one point in time it gives us a snapshot or whatever you use Circle where we are relative to standards and other students as I'm finding what we can learn from MCAS assessment is we can look for patterns and that's why
110it's so frustrating when we just get all the questions they don't give us all the questions that they use because they use in the United States um but we can't look over time and I don't know Peter's doing a ton of work with that these are the spring results we're going to look at results over time um this is this year for third fourth and fifth grade the blue is Berlin the red is uh Boylston green is the state you can see that we have fine and large you can see the state average which is the Baseline is the threshold that's what we expect we should be able to do better than Western Springfield uh because we are better supported both by parents and finish beautifully schools um there's a very successful year for third
111grade in Tucker who was probably not watching as I should because she did just an amazing amazing job uh getting her kids right this is just this year this is going to remind people these third graders last year were hybrid the year before that born in once we closed down so you kind of get back to this level is really nice the state gives us different answers or different results for MPS they looked at it by grade level and they'll give us the entire school this says our whole school meets or exceeds antlers for English language arts all three grades three four and five over the last it's really six years because there's that coverage I'll bring it up once it seems to be a trend for this year and as a Bes parent it's
112clearly concerning the gap between I assume the curriculum is the same I assume the kids are learning the exact same thing so I guess my question is is it a group of kids going back to what Mike said are there more higher need kids at Bes versus Berlin do we know why is this just I I think so what I'd like to see is a bridge between that Gap what you're going to hear me say over just it's not we're not going to believe no um and I can really challenge a little bit I think that we have some of the same curricular tools but I think they were just now starting to bring teachers together in terms of how to use those tools I'll argue advantage in Berlin we've adopted earlier yeah um in
113terms of of more focus on Phonics uh more focused approach to the use of literature that supports early reading and some work in writing and I think that in Boylston we're kind of we're kind of stepping up to that correct and I think part of what not time no ELA toast John but um part of what we have discussed as we've gone through this is the idea that we have raised the expectations at Bes um not only for behaviors but also for academics um and so now there's no doubt the students can continue to meet those expectations but it's about setting the scene it's about setting ourselves up for Success when we look at this kind of testing and the other thing that John spoke about was the early adoption of BMS to the ELA
114curriculum that has really put us not behind but it's a it's a learning curve and it has to do with professional development it has to do with time that our teachers are getting to learn new material specifically with our high need students it has to do with our special ed teachers having professional development time to be able to learn other way ways to teach students the skills that everybody else is learning so it really does have to do with that Comfort level of the material and that is what I think we will automatically see that growth as we as we course for years to come forward I know I'm sorry I warned you I warned you I was getting there I'm sorry okay yeah this is good this is good I just want to make
115sure and you know this goes to Carol too and as a school committee we've talked about this multiple times you know one District kids are all together at the Hondo and it hasn't been one district for long but we need some I was looking at the data up here yeah pretty regionalization I know what's going on exactly I think 2019 is when 2021 . we've been we have not been one District but in a couple years and we had covered so I get it but I think it's wrong I guess the point I'm trying to make I'm not like saying shame on you you guys stink here what are you doing blah blah blah I'm saying this is a great reminder of how we all of us need to work to get this budget the
116district Improvement plan us sitting here in these meetings discussing this we need to you know obviously sometimes those one school so there's no differentiation between which town the kids live in but when we're talking elementary schools we want I would like to see to make sure the curriculums are people we have the same tools and media that BMS has we have the same resources we have the same level of teachers so if we have you know step 10 teachers and all in the third grade then we've got the entry level teachers at pts I mean there's differences so I just want to make sure it's on the radar one of the reasons that we'll be looking at a curriculum director's job and I talked about me taking a more direct approach with the elementary level
117was that it's a unique yeah it's a very different set of learning circumstances and something is experiences so I think that one of the things we'll be able to do is I'll have some time to kind of take a deeper in it again Tuesday yes we're asking teachers to teach ER or asking teachers to take what they know about teaching the reading from seven to one side they were taught and they're still being taught some of the UMass schools that the magic to reading is simply to get children beautiful books and they sit with their flashlights and they read them as much and it turns out that doesn't work um yeah there's a great podcast called sold the story um in the one of the you know people over and over again I forgot to
118teach kids that's the important words you can't read the outermost house with with Mr Gordon we go so that's our goal that's what we're working on um here's real quick because I swear it was a good ideally with this this is third grade um this is fourth grade this is fifth grade and I will tell you there was a there was a webinar with Premiership education ask yourself and the concern was especially the language arts that there was a consistent dip from previous years that they were specifically relating to covet and you can see it in all of those graphs where those everybody went down from the pre from 21 to 22. how the 21 remembers it was half the time um the other piece is that with financial charge so there's that too um
119so that's what they look like and this is again over the last six years something that Mr Jordan and I have been working yeah look over time but this is not the same cover it's not the same group of kids and right now I can't do same group of kids because my fifth graders had half a test last year and no test year before yeah take a couple more years before we can start to look at cohorts but he's already doing it like right straight through 10th right um you've heard me talk before about writing and it's something the commissioner specifically mentioned that the writing scores were way down they've changed for like the 100th time how they report out writing this year they only did the SC development part of uh the writing prompt
120for the MCAS Test in English language arts in three four and five it used to be there was a part where they looked at their ability just to write you know grammar punctuation conventions and then essay idea development which is how you answer the question do you have a beginning in the middle of an interview score for example um and you can see our kids and kids across the state are still struggling this is third grade and it's early Boylston um and then the state average same thing here where the numbers are essentially the same uh this is fifth grade again we get a little more luck in Berlin than they did in Boston it's an area of growth I've been talking about it for a couple of months all right well since you all
121reviewed the data which is going to equally uh so we are talking about the spring results and obviously Mr Campbell and I discussed the fact that I was not with you um then but there are still some overarching conversations that we're having with elementary teachers that I think are important uh when we talk about math performance I'll go on this side so I'm not on the camera uh when we talk about back performance it really does stabilize um I think that John just alluded to that in terms of the ELA scores that's not something that we see but when you are looking um at the scores across time you see that it's on that upward Trend so that was something that we expected and this is oh yes true I will let me step out
122first now oh I like it I'm sorry I just wanted to point out because I know that Deb Julius greatness I mean you guys know that in Berlin the third fourth and fifth kind of a person teaches math only person teaches of our third graders last year Mavericks see that the expectations for math um it's like it's the best number Elementary number the district has ever had and I know that Mrs Euless who's retiring at the end of the year it's just well I don't believe proud of her kids and I just I wanted to point it out to all of you because I'm wildly proud of she's just an amazing teacher who has a nap with talking map with you so I'm sorry I should have said no the 80 I really want to
123know no that's fantastic and actually it brings up a point that you know John and I are always talking with Carol about you know how the how things are happening at the Ms and things are happening at Bes and what is different and what's the same and the idea that there's departmental you know having one teacher teach math and one teacher teach Ela these are all things that come into conversations that we have about what's best for kids at what age level so uh we talked about the uh rise here in the math scores over time and I don't want to I want to address that thought that we were talking about earlier Megan about Bes in comparison to to BMS and I think even when we're looking at scores like this this is grade
1243 math and we see that upward climb we still see that Bes is has lower score than BMS one of the things that we have worked with Joey flourni on is the expectation of time on a subject area the expectation of time on math specifically and how we are looking at schedules and making sure that we can have blocks of time dedicated to that topic to that subject area so that students have 60 minutes a day of math and it is not something that sort of gets bounced around with a time frame every day that's really important in terms of consistent see grades four see you can see the dip I mean this is the hybrid right at 2021 so you see a little dip there but again that trajectory is going back up so
125I'll be curious to see continuing with some consistency the other thing that we did at Bes in fifth grade this year was We minimized the amount of transitions that are happening uh for students so rather than switching to three different teachers they are switching to two teachers and they are having all of their main core content taught by their homeroom teacher and so um we were looking for ways to systematically approach uh their ability to swap the code switch from one topic to another from one teacher to another and things like that using what we know about students to be able to address some of these issues but overall our conversations and the thoughts that we have have to do with the amount of rigor the the the rigor that we are expecting the expectations
126we have about the time that teachers are spending on topics and the conversations we're having is about whether or not it's the school of thinking that you just say it's one day it's one test which I know that we saw that at the beginning those expectations but also at what point are we preparing our students so when they get to the day of the test the stress of approaching something that they've never seen before and what it looks like that doesn't overtake them excuse me overtake them and cast a shadow over their curriculum knowledge and their content knowledge and so the things that we've been talking about are how does that look in technology class how does that look for us preparing them like we talked about a couple meetings ago the typing.com so was
127that for me okay I mean I know I can be long-winded but um again so we you know we're analyzing the scores um I used to talk to a teacher this afternoon and she said I just want to know I just want to know what it is and I was thinking about the scatter plot and it was like your eye goes right to the spot where you think what is that question about uh for us it has a lot to do with geometry um and um some some areas that we can look at and think about more and I think the teachers are just anxious to get these they're always anxious to get these results and sort of pour over them and see what we can do better do you have any questions about this
128we're so good Mr Campbell science already we didn't even have any questions it's because the report was so fabulously so fabulous and lovely pictures um very quickly so I I mentioned this earlier fifth grade science these are the kids who were uh hyper pleasure in remote the year before towards the end um so the results aren't super surprising this is this past Year's fifth grade current sixth graders um Berlin just the state of liberty did much better um if you look at the if you look at the overall trend there's not a whole lot of improvement in the backup but you put it on everybody I think this is part of it it's not so much because I hope we have a better Science and Technology but I want them to respond better in testing
129situations so that they're thinking about more than just the obvious ly problem solvers www think a little bit differently than we have done a technology and a dead horse we have to teach them to really deeply dance I hope I didn't go back to math now oh sorry Josh if anything you want it yeah Mr Floor I just wanted to go back and talk about Matt Moore that was the fun part question um first of all thanks for parsing all this data together for everybody and it's a lot of work I understand and uh Kudos is really nice to see the numerous areas where the district is doing really well you know um in the vast majority of kids are are meeting or excuse me expectations um just a question we brought up the called
130the kids a few times right throughout this um are we I Wonder that's an acute situation we hope right I'm sure yes do you think it would make sense or maybe are you already looking at those groups of kids in income positive kind of like we talked about it before so they don't get lost in the years and just ensuring that those kids like the last slide you showed up are are progressing and we're watching those years specifically year over year in our thing are we giving them the support they need so that they can they can catch up there was a group of kids who might remember the bridge when they first came back it was very heavily boiled to the kids um but we watched all of them over the last year to
131kind of see look at the impact was like and they they caught up here they are not my concern at this point it is much more that cumulative loss of knowledge I mean person said in other years math is worthless you have to learn a before you can understand it grows over time but it's easier to catch up because you can't do video so just take kids where they're at and then start keeping it forward so that they don't try to lose this is crazy about the high school um I'm going to go dark is a little more challenging because it's a thought processor if they're receiving more of a challenge in terms of kids social emotional well-being um they're still growing men in school and I'm still saying I won't speak for you but
132I don't know when we talk about it we're seeing those behavioral changes you know where their kids especially our younger kids you know we've got kids in our school still this is their first real experience of a full-time School you're not like novels for awesome um so it's still trying to grow them into that and while we keep working on the big profession I think that's harder while I saw those steps a little bit a lot yeah yeah it makes a lot of sense and I I just wonder if and again perhaps you're doing it already but if you have a special or a couple of special charts that focus on those kids right that where it's really clear and we're able to disconnect the dots from there earliest experience must be with you currently
133to make sure that they're accelerated that's what they're looking at are those resolves to catch those students from progress tomorrow in addition since that's been I mean that's what happens we've got millions of data but after that what they're doing now so Joey is part of a team they used to go separately went to school to knew they didn't work testing I think it was by the teachers right yeah to give us a news represents they're finding right about this and stuff and make it so much quicker the initial reports especially the teachers because we would do a building base so you'd have myself and the tutor trying to do all the math you have the same on the LA side and then you know the same two people doing a bigger school over there
134um and it was taking weeks and weeks and I was part of that bridge program and we had to do things with online and that took I think in some cases like three to four weeks to get all that done so what we've done this time is we have all six people both both coaches both tutors in both schools we did yesterday and today and so far yeah where everything is going remarkably and the teachers have enjoyed it because whereas it was like how many kids can I take can I take two out of several days we came in and we could come into your class for an hour in most cases it was less it was 30 minutes we were there that was it and you're done with us and so that's you know
135one teacher told me yesterday and kudos to the the team that we put together because she could sit there and she just did a read-along book for 15 minutes and we were done with their kids which would have taken normally would have taken several days of working around the lunch and everything else we just schedule it out and said here's what we're going to do yeah and it's more accurate making sure that they're giving the same assessment to the students by human so that they're not eliminating certain questions if they're all doing the same questions right now you've done it you've opened up math conversations because you know it's it's not quite not yet um so yeah so the thing about aims web Angel is just about for math it's just about the number since
136there's the concepts and applications piece to it that shows sort of the broader pictures of math its shapes its times its positions whatever but the bulk of it is about that number sense so Miss Costello is right the last several years we've been working with third fourth and fifth grade you'll be happy to know we're taking these tests they're taking these tests online we're still teaching them how to do the work on paper because one of the things we we just actually we're focusing on in the second grade was these kids will do the work on the paper do the work on the paper but as soon as you see them to have them work on the computer click click click click so what we're focusing on is how can we get them to still
137slow down and show that work before they do the Clinton so this year because we've worked three four and five for several years now this year we added first and second grade the expectation is the world ending that that digital assessment and it's been going real I mean it's a learning curve but they're getting that exposure now and they're they're able to fine-tune the way that we're approaching it so that's the skill sales though I think just by going around with the team sending a message for two people who are operating very differently for as long as I've been here districts districts and they're seeing hey bringing those schools together and they're saying John started earlier with this literacy ship to this school here about Across the Nation now with the science of reading my
138total shift away from balance of literacy downstairs that was so big about the symptom now and all that we were all it was trained in that too now Stephanie's over in Boylston on top of this with this so it's going to happen gradually but it is happening the choices we're making around resources are happening and the message that the two schools football doesn't matter where you do anything to which school you're Landing in with the same sort of the same instruction so I love that yeah that's a piece today or what you're listening I don't like to see that either that they want to be prepared to go to high school together you'll have kids that are at a disadvantage if you together Lisa's going over right and it's going to be working with the
139fifth grade teachers during the next PD day to say here's what to expect with these site but let's look at these standards you're going to have on your science test in fifth grade and here's what you should be teaching here so you should be teaching so that's great there's lots of ships too yeah traditionally shared inside the middle of your source with this group right thank you thank you very much thank you all right uh it brings us to business items we can discuss here so first up we have a motion to approve elementary school principle and Elementary curriculum coordinated job description Julie any discussion questions [Music] all right all in favor aye against all right a motion to approve the school principal description is the second any questions or discussion on board yes all
140right passes by both of the emotionally approved middle high schools assistant principal job description thank you Julie any discussion questions all four all right yes [Music] director of curriculum and Grant's General description thank you Julie any questions and discussion all right yes um motion passes uh here we are a motion to accept the donation of 159.83 at the Savings Bank to EBS Library or any questions about this is going to the library system all right [Music] um [Music] second Julian any questions I've got some questions all right um so thanks for sharing this reading this yesterday um who wrote this this is a combination uh 20 to 20 or 2019 which I do is written by June and uh updated okay so a couple of things I would um I'm gonna recommend Kickback Mike next
141week you know January so the adapter Department nonetheless I'm still going to recommend that we kick it back a couple things I think we need to change okay so in general I you know I think just from the tonality of it I'm not sure I think we might be spending a little more time talking about election results in less time about the finance began and you'll get them good work and we started in the vision you completed within the last two years I'd love to see that highlight a little bit more and um specifically I just think of language around Dr Henry's departure could be could be improved I think I think I think that's not really you're not excited to have a lot of sign my name up to frankly and then [Music] um
142yeah uh under organization peak one first sentence after Dr Susan Henry abruptly quit the committee in January 2022 I think that's intended to be a comment for that um I don't think that language is roughly with is appropriate for this kind of document uh similarly it's referenced again in the attendance sheet where she's referred to as quit January 2022 I I just how would you describe our actions I don't think the word abruptly adds anyone with value to be honest it conveys indeed but it is it's irrelevant she left okay she was running on a date and it was replaced she was she resigned for the day before nonetheless an annual report um this attendance chart here this is something that we've done in 2019 as well it's uh everything in here is taking directly
143from previous reports of a real Pleasant template okay uh things have related to those years were taken out of okay I hear your point on the three-year plan I don't know that that is necessarily should do this report only because that's a separate report by itself yeah I mean I think a summary would be appropriate before it's a big there's a big milestone um and then just on the attendance chart Mike you know I'm not sure if the numbers for me specifically are the typo but that's not accurate uh the numbers are from Christine from June we did have a meeting in July and I just took him from three many minutes yeah I was scratching my head on that one Christy um and no offense to you Jess but I think I've been in
144more meetings than you just because I've been around for a bit longer I counted 10 was the number um I attend was the number I counted earlier today it was my okay it doesn't mean yeah um I'll be a printed version it is yes uh the drive stolen um yeah yep election results yeah I went through and they uh [Music] um thank you all right so Bob you said the election results and is there what do you have any idea what that data is connected to no that's just him since I've been here for seven years since I think they have to compile all of it because they have to have it compiled so they can submit it to the voters I thought Susan did one last year no Mike it was very long correct
145okay it was I think thank you yeah yeah I think there's some good content in here uh you know I think he's uh it's an opportunity for the six of us to um you know share some of the triumphs and challenges that the committee has had in 2022 we've got plenty to talk about it's really focus on the triumphs of course um and I think you know if if time pressure we're not a concern I would I'd rather give some time for the committee length is also sponsoring about how I was instructed to keep it short yeah so yeah yeah no I don't you know it's an actual it's it's Who We Are uh who the uh who's writing the schools uh it's a major things that are upcoming uh the budget numbers in there
146uh do you need to hire team superintendent uh is in there and then the election is one of the big things that last year's report was work while being up to the election so the election results are in there this time around and then it's uh the attendance of who's on the committee so yes we voted in a big plan I wouldn't include that plan I would include the plans like 100 Pages yeah I feel like that would be a 2023 isn't that going to be yeah whether and ruin the monster machines [Music] to see if I can combine that one I think that's probably more right so we have a motion on the floor right now to accept this course so I think if we just change it to resigned instead of using the
147words what I drop a broad plate and then I hear you Bob and Mike I'm sorry I know you asked Laurie and I for comment and I took a look at the red stuff and I'm like oh that looks good because there's only so much time so I hear what you're saying but this is like a report that goes to the town and we're gonna like hit in the pavement art on the budget so sure all right so I'll make a motion to amend uh oh yeah we gotta so we got to vote it down yeah um [Music] um [Music] um thank you two minutes okay so it's our Atomic motion to amend the annual report to change the verbiage in the organization paragraph s because it's an amendment is that correct Christy all right
148so the motion is to um amend the verbiage to say instead of abruptly quit into the in the organization paragraph just use the word resign and then in the chart on page the attendance page remove the word quick and under Dr Susan Henry's line all right that's a full motion increase the word resigned all right change and change router columns attendance we don't need to worry about uh it's typos right he fixed it not to remember checking cash [Music] all right so that's the motion is there a second second Julie uh discussion for typos they don't have to do an amendment I can assure you if your name is spelled correctly if you'd like to come home maybe we should just slow down all right so that's the discussion is there all in favor of
149that inventions aye aye [Music] all right so now we have a motion on the floor to accept the report as amended uh and any other further discussions all right all in favor aye aye um uh the report as in the drive now as amended fast okay all right thank you God uh how about uh motion to approve the overnight field tripod in March so second Julie Megan any discussion different yeah different trip yeah it's a different trip did you see that the first student council yeah foreign ER who's one of the advisors for the student council and she said that they plan to have 12 students representing tehronto while attending What's called the Massachusetts State student council conference this is in the Hyannis um from March 8th through the 10th uh it's historically has included
1501200 student leaders from over 85 schools in Massachusetts each year and they have been attendance she usually goes along with Danielle wicker um as the other advisor they've both been going with his group since 2017. last year we had student page money was one of the actual State vice presidents and this year we have Shanley Evans going and she is the state president representing the entire state of Massachusetts high school students student council and she's also coordinating this entire event the advisors attending with the 12 students um plus Shanley which makes 13 are like I said Kim trainer and Megan Lubin is going to be going in um plays in Mrs Winkler because she's out on the church uh they plan to leave on the 8th at 8 30 a.m they're going to return Friday
151the 10th before 2. they're going to be staying at the cape codder and attend the conference during the day at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center and um the school bus shuttles are provided between hotels for schools and they're playing to travel down in one hopefully with less oils to the student council as they have in the past the cost of the trip is approximately 350 to 375 per family but it finances are concern student council will happily cover the cost so that students can attend as finances should not need to train and then they did um list the whole very long run no Michael I love it how would this 12 students are the upper class representation to work with jackpot yeah sure okay yeah typically they're typically my favorite um all right motion
152passes you guys can think about it yeah uh motion to approve the request of scores of obso need to start those items off thank you uh any discussion questions [Music] motion Improvement and additional past FTE preschool teacher at BMS so um any questions now that's so awesome so moved oh sorry you want to talk oh my goodness it's fine yeah so um so Chip is on the program uh Durant so before anything I know we had to get this approved first and then we will any permits that need to be presented will go to us or to you to the facilities ninja sweater with six shots humbly suggest as the building principle and we're delighted yeah by the various town yeah by the various parties um yeah we should put an amendment in here so
153is it possible for the our facilities manager to coordinate those the permitting process could that be appropriate okay so because it's not District 90. [Music] really I'm sure he'd be empty to like [Music] yeah Mr slow down all right all right so do we have a motion to amend this motion to who is the language that you link like Incorporated will boarding all necessary requirements improvements I think in the Berlin baseball slash basketball group actually I know they are take notes everyone requires a portion of the large portion of membership thing like I'm their partners um to make sure that the link Incorporated and their Partners yeah coordinate all necessary approvals and permits I'm going to second then Julie all right what about the amendment zero all in favor of the motion to accept the
154donations aye aye as amended right as amended all right motion passes okay that's it for business items three people die yes yeah that was the one that you said um all right so this next this next piece here is something that requested just a sort of open compliments if anybody wants to suggest anything for next time okay um this is the suggestion for consideration for future agendas if it fits often guaranteed just feel free to talk together um so the first one is Suki's ability to restart the coma dashboard for reported covet cases in each of the syllables um hopefully to have a specialist including the School nurses regarding the burden of tallying reported cases weekly and also the school committee to maintain the dashboard is not to just burden the central office staff for
155nurses the second one who's open is for School nurses to remind parents on how the protocols such as CDC recommendations for testing or return only after fever 3 24 hours and weekly emails no principles Etc um the CDC Updates this weekly data late Thursday so it's just a Time for practice letters three in feasibility of home and health shooting for students quarantining for covet or other long-term illnesses so as not to lose time on family made of high school that was happening and I didn't even know Christie thanks um and then four um that are South are attracting during the school committee meeting so it's really hard to listen and actually hear what people are saying during the meetings um so I know I've asked a little bit but if we could look into understanding
156for the meetings or the recordings that would be great I heard that somebody texted and said the audio was much better today so I I don't know because they were speaking they're standing next to the camp that probably The Voice reminder has an interesting thing it rotates and it's it traps speech it's really interesting um and then five is also for remote participation for school committee members or staff for admin for meetings um that are live given illnesses or other things within the the mafc there is words to allow remote participation more likely so it would be great to be able to look into that possibility of covet in the spring you know so I think we did look into that when I had covid because we had to literally cancel a Contracting contracts remember
157and there was they pretty much said no uh it's against the state uh it has to do with I could feel like face timed in but FaceTime isn't secure and had to be on Zoom that's because it was an executive session oh all right so I don't know about our negotiation is an executive session um that you can do it as long as you you say I am in a secure location by myself no one else can hear that or executive session I don't know yeah I don't know yeah well like I went to the open whatever so there is words in the mafc to allow that so we'll be friends I have one one thought um not not that we have you know want to extend the agenda but um you know just the
158the process of doing business as a committee like this sometimes my personal opinion can be a little robotic robotic to someone that's watching and I I think what I've heard from the community and personally feel is that I think the community and those watching would benefit from seeing humans talk to each other about subjects maybe a little bit more often in this forum and so you know I think if we try to do that to the best of our ability within the balance of the law because there are um some you know constraints there regarding open meeting a lot but um my suggestion would be to add a walk-in topics segment to our agenda because Matthew long but a short period of time where we allow open discussion about ideas hey should this go on
159next week's next month's agenda or not or tell us what we're doing now uh well I think you're you're asking for agenda items for next month yeah they correct me if I'm wrong with Christy but anything that would get deliberated you need to be noticed as opposed to me anything that's deliberated within a forum so that makes four of you must be done in public understood with notice right with 48 hours notice not including weekends so if if um it's like a walk-in topic to deliberate or make decisions yeah I don't think it would be appropriate for making decisions just just really trying to create an opportunity for for us to deliberate I guess more openly and less sometimes without as much Focus right I mean we always say deliberate more openly what's more discuss
160discuss things I mean you know discuss pros and cons you know way way things openly before both I think we we often come in you know having reviewed data um in advance and have our minds made up and so it's great for continuity of the meeting you know like this time do this bang bang bang we're pretty much aligned on most items come in but I think the community would benefit from hearing us the way pros and cons of different different ideas right I think we look to that voting record and they're pretty consistent among filters in the committee meeting our community after meeting after meeting which I think in class that could not a lot of um you know weighing the items so so beyond what we do now we're just ask questions go
161back what would we do because I think it's a good idea well I mean my suggestion was to create an opportunity on the agenda to talk about about items that have come up that maybe aren't ready to go and and it sounds like maybe that's that's not really feasible to just sort of pop up have an idea in our heads they can go on the agendas which is why we're having this session yeah it's not a criticism of how we run our meetings which one thing I want to say to John is actually how quickly you guys are changing the way they're teaching getting to that one District idea I like it but in a corpus I think you can move as quick as you want this is town government local government open meeting law
162we don't get to choose we don't get to you know the laws we have to follow so if we get on an agenda then we can deliberate it we can discuss it we can do whatever you want I totally get sorry I don't interrupting but I totally get where you and Bob and Jessica I get where you're coming from because when I started school committee last year I was so fired up about how the process was like oh you have to do it's like so rule-based and you come in thinking I'm gonna make such a big difference and I have all these great ideas and then you hear like wait a minute nope you're gonna break the law you do this and you shouldn't be talking about this so I totally get what you're saying
163you just want to like openly like solve problems and but like what Mike said and Christy pretty much can't put it like it has to be because we've had people play breaking open Banning law and I've seen I've done a ton of research because now I'm paranoid about it where people literally talk to an attorney get fined up to fifteen thousand dollars you have to like walk a very delicate line with it so I totally get what you're saying it's so hard when the public comes in and they make comments like I want to reply to them um multiple times I mean especially we were all sitting on it during covid with masking and it was so hard to sit in that Auditorium and listen to everyone probably like no you're wrong or yes you're
164right or whatever but it's like it is so I get what you're saying I wish there was a better way it probably isn't going to work but I would encourage us to think creative how we can breathe a little later between yeah no I totally agree and I think this this thing at the last 10 minutes of course not when it's 9 30 at night but you know because then we're all fried um and that's another thing I've talked about like maybe we have a two-hour limit and then we need another meeting I'd rather come back and have another meeting because honestly like after 8 30 I'm toast like I'm I'm out so and just let them know you all be there for 30 minutes and have them go on at the beginning because I
165think the other thing is people see the meetings are three hours and they're like I can't sit here so I think that's another thing is the length but I loved having 10 15 minutes at the end where we could kind of like so I know Jess you want to peel open the whole Kobe thing so you know and I have some thoughts on that but again tonight's not the time it's not on the agenda um you know you and I can talk one-on-one but we can't all talk as a group because that violates opening law outside of this meeting so I'm curious like if something is said in the public comments right it has to align to something on the agenda is is there a way to open that up because like this this is
166opening different topics that might not be related to anything else meeting so for the open promise in the beginning I mean is there a way to to open that up for like different topics well it is a public group anybody that's about a policy though that is the school committee policy that anything that's that's um sending public comments must be so that's something I'd have to look down on policy said yeah we can do that and also I think what it can contact us email us at any point in time and if it's an important enough topic then we can adjust together yeah well and because I was looking to Robert's Rules and you you kind of mend you know an unforeseen item can be the agenda can be offended an avid too um so
167I'm curious if that could happen after the open comments section yeah but I don't think that can be used just during any topic that something might want to add that's not at it you can't adjust an agenda after the community has been complicated so the way I read it is that you you can make a motion so would that have been before the Pledge of Allegiance before before may cause meaning to order is my understanding that once that is done that is the meeting is set foreign policy obviously yeah so opportunities at the end of each agenda I know like the timing of meetings not just something to be discussed at a future meeting here we're already here yeah as a public for the public to comment on YouTube you know like the public comments
168agreements if you have a school committee meeting is not omelets meaning they had an opportunity to come and become let's not just like explain their idea but I think if you have like one minute time for questions or clarification you know I don't know if it would really happen that much time we'll consider it in the future but we are Past Times of that emotion to adjourn hello um
