[Applause] so [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] we did it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] good [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] please stand for the pledge of allegiance sung by our very own olivia loseritis [Applause] the national anthem yeah say can you see by the dawn's early light what's so proud we hit at the twilight's last gleaming who's brought stripes and [Music] we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rockets ran down the mountains bursting in and gave proof through the night that our flag was still there yet way [Applause] of the brain thank you hello everyone uh welcome to the graduation ceremony of the tonto class of 2022

i want to begin with a couple of thank yous uh to our teachers thank you for uh please um you know thanks for sticking through us with one of the most strenuous times in the history of your profession and for ensuring that we made it through the other side intact thank you to our parents and to the assembled families of the class of 2022 thank you for being here and for assembling or for raising us to absolutely crush our high school experiences to my class thank you for the memories and for the trust you placed in the officers and myself for these past four years we're done guys it's time i know right it's time to leave this place and to go out and do all the things we talked about never before has the

far future been so frighteningly immediate but today is a day of farewell a farewell to this building we find ourselves in a farewell to the people seated next to you and a farewell to the life we've all lived for the past four years i don't come to you with any special knowledge of the upcoming years obviously but i come with special knowledge of the people that i'm graduating with today we will not settle nor will we aspire to mediocrity with that i'd like to introduce the superintendent of berlin boylston public school regional public school district mr jeffrey zhang [Applause] how'd you use this thank you glad we could be here today to celebrate this graduation indoors it's been way too long what about that national anthem if i had here i would have been standing

on edge that was incredible you can heckle if you want to day two i was a couple months ago i was reading this leadership article and it started off with this story about research that was done by an american biologist named robert zapalski you're not going to be quizzed on it i say it from this aquarius benefit so she has something to do when she goes home to look someone up although she probably knows him but he was researching zebras and zebras are camouflaged but they're not camouflaged like a lion lion's a camouflage against the background zebra camouflaged the black and white stripe as you've all learned and so they're not camouflaged against their own background but they're camouflaged against other zebras and so when they're standing against the herd it makes it difficult for

them to be identified it also makes it difficult for alliance to hunt them because of that so the biologists were doing these observations in the wild on these zebras so they do an observation they look down they look back up it's like okay what group of stripes are we just looking at so we got to do something about this so they go and get some red paint they get one of these zebras they put a little red paint on the back legs and so now they can do the observations onto z because they can identify what zebra they were looking at the unintended consequence was the lions could identify that zebra two and they attack them and eat them right there so other than starting off with a nice animal story there was a point

to the leadership article and it's that to be a leader you have to stand out from the crowd but when you do that you take the chance of being criticized and attacked and that zebra story has some parallels in real life in fact there's an expression for it it's called the tall poppy syndrome it comes from the saying that the poppy that grows the tallest gets cut first and it turns out no matter where you go around the world no matter what culture you you engage in they all have a saying like that some of them you've heard some of you haven't don't make waves fly under the radar the treaty grows the tallest gets the most wind and i think my favorite i think it's from the japanese culture the nail that sticks up

gets hammered down and i wondered why is it that every single kid right around the world hear these stories growing up from people who care about them and i believe it's just that they care about you they don't want to see you get hurt and there's some wisdom in learning from things that have been tried and true and there's some comfort and being around people that think like us this is especially when you get old and you may have a career or you have a family that you have to support but that's just the point you're not old but you're not old you don't have a career you don't have a family to support you don't need the safety of a crowd you don't have to be part of a crowd because the real danger

with being part of a crowd isn't that if you leave the safety of that crowd you get criticized and attacked the real problem with being part of a crowd is that you never get to shine you never get to do anything great because you always end up someplace in the middle the median and that word median is related to the word mediocre you've heard the expression maybe death by mediocre it's a long unattractive and painful way to go in fact if you're someone who follows the crowd and you decide and you have the right genetics you could have 75 80 more years of a completely mediocre life think about that what a shame that would be you were all born unique but you spend so much time following the crowd that you end up dying

looking just like them and acting just like them and that's no that's no life for you there's a branch of social psychology that studies crowd behavior and they find that there's a correlation between crowd behavior and individual responsibility it's a simple correlation but it's well worth knowing people who are likely or more apt to take responsibility for their actions are much less likely to follow the crowd it's a good place to start the next party of your life you want to have a meaningful and unique life take responsibility for your actions and don't blame other people for your problems and that article i was telling you about it's not really as much about running an organization or a company as much as it's about taking control of your life so take responsibility with the words

you speak because if you don't the crowd will put words in your mouth and take responsibility for those priorities you set in life because if you don't the crowd will set your priorities for you and most of all take responsibility for the the friends you choose and who you decide in this life you're going to praise and who you're going to criticize because if you don't do that the crowd will do that for you too see today is a good day for you you're graduating so tomorrow for this group it really is a new day today you can put aside your excuses today you can take responsibility for your actions and the day you can start building that life that you want for yourself in the future i'm going to leave you with one thought

here's the only thing you're going to be guaranteed in life no matter what choices you make somebody will make sure that the outcomes of those choices somehow will become your responsibility whether you like it or not so choose wisely class of 2022. you've done an awesome job so far everybody here is proud of you congratulations and good luck thank you [Applause] now i'd like to bring up someone who is also graduating soon principal diane tussari [Applause] thank you mr campbell and mr zang mr campbell because of my height class of 2022 i truly grappled with what to say to you today a day for which you've been waiting for for over 12 years as most of you know today is the last day i will ever give a speech to tohonto graduates and i cannot

think of a more dynamic intelligent and creative group to end my career with so i look back over my speeches over the last 11 years and i'd like to share two of my favorite excerpts from those speeches although most of you may not realize it until you leave to hondo this school and the people in it are special you will soon see as you leave your small towns that the experiences conversations and memories that you have made and had here will amaze some that hear of your stories it is at that time that you will realize what a special place to hondo really was you see the faculty and staff here at toronto are incredible group of dedicated caring and intelligent people behind the scenes these people have given up time with their own families

to make to hunt and feel like you're a family for over the past seven years in a time in which educators are put under a microscope oftentimes not valued or respected for their professional knowledge and expected to do more and more with less and less toronto faculty and staff has always put you first because that's what families do going to share with you a poem from an unknown author the poem is called the magic bank account imagine that you've won the following prize in a contest each morning your bank will deposit eighty six thousand four hundred dollars in your private account for personal use however this prize has rules the set of rules is as follows number one everything that you don't spend each day will be taken away from you number two you may

not simply transfer money into some other account number three you may only spend it number four each morning upon awakening the bank opens your account with another eighty six thousand four hundred dollars for a new day and number five the bank can end the game without warning at any time it can say game over close your account and you will never receive a new one what would you personally do with your prize you would buy anything and everything you wanted right not only for yourself but also for all the people you love and care for even for people you don't know because you couldn't possibly spend it all yourself you would try to spend every penny and use it all because you knew the money would be replenished in the morning actually this game is

real each of us is already a winner of a much more valuable prize we just don't seem to realize it the prize is time you see each morning we awaken and receive eighty six thousand four hundred seconds of a gift of life and we go to sleep at night and any remaining time is not credited to us what we haven't used up that day is forever lost yesterday is forever gone each morning the account is refilled but the bank can dissolve your account at any time without warning so what will you do with your 86 400 seconds tomorrow those seconds are worth much much more than the same amount in dollars think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life because time raises by so much quicker than you think so take

care of yourself be happy love deeply and enjoy life here's wishing you joy and happiness in whatever life may bring to you and please remain forever stag strong thank you [Applause] at this time i'd like to introduce the valedictorian of the class of 2022 jordan money [Applause] the past four years have gone by so fast we sit here as a class teetering between high school and what comes next thinking back on all that we have learned in this building we didn't just learn about math in science history and english but also about ourselves and each other without the show we never would have learned that mri likes to cut a rug every now and then and without jack we never would have learned what not to say over the announcements at school without matt we

wouldn't know what maximum effort is without the rubber band we've been missing out on some seriously rocking music without leah we might not know what it is to laugh until we cry each of you has taught each other how to grow into the person you've become today if i learned one thing from this class from the past seven years it is that we are forced to be reckoned with we are funny smart collaborative mischievous and resilient whatever lies ahead of us we have the skills and community to conquer anything our class is loaded with talented and hard-working students and i am honored to have grown with you i would also like to acknowledge our amazing teachers and what we have learned from them we learned that mr pacheco is disorganized and eccentric and yet we

may never be lucky enough to have another teacher like him we learned that the mitochondria is the powerhouse to sell through miss sequeira's constant excitement and energy we learned that the best lean cuisine is the swedish meatball from the many lunch study sessions that mr cavino offers we learned that water is never water and about the importance of seeking the spheres to connect ideas from mr daugherty we learned that mr whitehead has the worst interpretations of marvel anything we learned that no matter what we had someone who cared because we knew frannie was in our corner thank you for all your years of hard work and the rock howard foundation that you've given us to build off of sophomore year mr daugherty asked many of us the question where have you come from and where

where you come from my dear phaedras and where are you going posed by socrates the resulting essay was a mind probing and yet therapeutic as we drove into our pasts and theorized about our futures i hope you all remember where you came from and what you've learned from this place as you take your first steps toward where you want to go my first steps will be to beg mr picaro once again to drive the golf cart thank you and congratulations to everyone [Applause] at this time i'd like to introduce the salutatorian of the class of 2022 carter nozick [Applause] i stand in front of all of you today as the second place finisher among our class i am beyond grateful for the recognition but that's not what i want to talk about because it feels

incomplete rather i want to speak for all the students sitting beside me who don't get the opportunity to make a speech for all those who spent countless hours studying doing homework and creating great things there are so many people in this class who deserve to be right here where i'm standing the fact that i get to speak was an exciting idea but also a bit of a hard one i had to grapple with what gives me the right to speak when there are so many equally if not more deserving for example students like skyler babino and her team of absolutely fantastic people who are working to get personal hygiene products put in all bathrooms throughout the school deserve to be here students like matt muldoon and his rubber band who inspire creativity among our class

and do it with such incredible spirit deserve to be here i wish i could say something incredible about every single student in this class and how much they deserve but time to simply not allow so please hear this speech and think not about me but of the class think about how incredible this class is as a whole think about those who aren't speaking to you right now think about those who make more of a difference than anyone but haven't yet been recognized for it every person here has worked themselves tirelessly to end up in this moment and if they aren't recognized for that then something has failed so to everyone here without the opportunity to show how much effort you put in to get here you deserve to be up here as much as anyone

and please over the course of your life never let recognition or the lack of it change who you are stay uniquely you stay uniquely kind and stay uniquely balanced thank you i would now like to introduce the student council president paige money [Applause] empathy the word that captures the feelings that allow us to understand each other without physically going through what another person may be going through as a leader empathy is an important skill to have at the beginning of the school year ms duceri has said to focus on being kind because you never know what someone is going through as a student council president along with the rest of the stuco seniors we really had to grab on to that idea leading students from grade 9 through 12 has provided many struggles mainly feeling

like we as seniors could never fully connect with everyone due to busy schedules and quick lunch meetings they got to know us yes but we really never got to know all of them i'd like to take this moment to thank our fearless leader for the past seven years mr sarri the student council senior struggling connect to connect with 24 other student council members from grade 9 through 12 is nothing to compare to how you have been able to connect with every student at this school whether through initial intimidation as a sixth grader that turned into unquestionable respect as a senior you have been able to connect and impact every one of our lives being able to successfully lead a school isn't always about just being in charge of the school it's about taking care of

those in your charge those who work here those who volunteer those who attend all those people contribute to the success of the school mr sarri has given our class seven years of impactful leadership a feat that could not have been easy we have given her great headaches with some questionable announcements transition time rowdiness and loads of sass throughout our years at tahunto but that has never once led her to give up on us being a leader comes with great personal sacrifice and i cannot imagine the grief you got from our class alone but i commend you for it and thank you for your years at tahunto our class has had many great leaders in our lives who led us to where we are today they got to know us were kind to us made us

feel seen or heard those people pushed us to be our true self and we wouldn't be us without them we've also had each other leaders in the classroom pushing each other to excel academically leaders on the field pushing each other to run that last lap or leaders in life people you look to and admire for their resilience anyone has the capability needs to be a leader at this moment in time the world needs a new kind of leadership leaders like mr series stepping down we need strong individuals like her in this to be ethical and guide others to achieve change not for themselves but for the benefit of others we will not change the world as individuals but as a group i know we will congrats to us thank you [Applause] i would now like

to introduce mr peter doherty for the faculty address [Applause] oat is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet it's game seven don't complain compete so when jordan asked me to do this i heard a voice in my head screaming oh dear lord please just say no don't not only are you terrified of speaking in public you know you're going to stress over this for weeks and then wait until the night before to finally put something down on paper it doesn't matter that jordan class of 2022 are among your favorites of all time plus diane is going to give you that infamous death glare if you speak for more than 30 seconds i mean i usually go like 30 minutes and you know it's that's impossible just pretend you have something to do

that day and take nancy reagan's advice and just say no instead what i heard coming out of my mouth was wow thank you i'd love to i'm honored of course i'm only kidding about the first part of me and the diane thing that is absolutely legit she literally said darden graduation speech truthfully i am honored i'm honored and grateful to you the class of 2022 and to my long run this is going to be tough and to my long time colleague mentor and friend diane tuseri for the opportunity to speak to today oh it is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet it's game seven don't complain compete my first introduction to you guys the class of 2022 happened when they were freshmen i typically don't pay much attention to freshmen because

well they're freshmen and plus mr whitehead really seems to joy teaching them so there's just no need with this class i had no choice i was at my desk doing some work and then from across the hall i heard something like this patrick patrick patrick stop it say patrick every day and i wonder who is this patrick and what on earth is he doing but i never saw him get kicked out of class he's annoying enough to get yelled at constantly but not doing quite enough to get kicked out must be an interesting kid interesting that's hilarious and that was it for you know for the majority of the year except for occasionally overhearing a few tall goofy looking kids on the way into mr whitehead's room arguing about marvel or totally geeking out about

some advanced computer mathy stuff that is way beyond my comprehension and i thought all right there's some potential there and then on their first day of sophomores i was going through the roster in period four i thought i was being clever when i remarked hey there's a luke andale in the same class and that's when leah assaulted me with an audible eye roll in growl g we've never heard that before and i was like all right i haven't even met this kid and she's already sassed me and then i began to drag them through the typical sophomore stuff line up alphabetically by middle name without talking silently stare at them for most of the period to see what they do make them repeat water is never water until they dreamt about it crank through a

few short stories over analyze various kinds of fields as well as jeans obsession with finney watch pixar's cars read an uplifting children's story about british kids having all sorts of fun while stranded on an island blah blah blah all the typical sophomore hits and somewhere in there i would occasionally find myself yelling patrick and i would find myself arguing about marvel with those same tall goofy kids and i found myself learning more about pokemon than i ever thought possible and then i would find myself making sure jackson and fletcher and cayden were awake all very typical sophomore stuff and then capturing the rye started with our talks about ducks and cab drivers and streets and carousels and then just like countless other years we rolled into march getting ready for mcas and then everything stopped

and typical was gone it was unprecedented how many times we heard unprecedented and somewhere in there we zoomed and we tried to carry on sometimes it worked sometimes not so much honestly i don't remember much else from the rest of that year other than asking cody to please stop spinning in his chair and then the year ended and then the next came and went and then the 21-22 school year arrived and i was ready for another year just to pass by but that didn't happen you wouldn't let it from day one in both ap lit in nature of being there was a different vibe about you a vibe i hadn't felt in a while despite the masks and restrictions and the ongoing pandemic oh my god in all its social drama especially directed towards schools

despite all that negativity you brought joy with you every day you found ways to laugh ways to celebrate learning in ways to happily push and support each other continuously onward mr pacheco and i would often watch you in class laughing and joking and carrying on and on about who knows what and we think you were blown off your work and when we call you on it you say we're actually done and then you would proceed to blow us away with your presentations you left us wondering how you did all of that brilliant work while simultaneously making it seem like you were you weren't doing anything because of all the laughter and joy and it continued day after day fast forward to may 15 2022 just three weeks ago specifically game seven between the celtics and

bucks with 7 40 left in the second quarter after witnessing some of the players upset something didn't go their way espn analyst mark jackson said the following it's game seven don't complain compete as soon as i heard it i knew i wanted to use it my speech first i thought i would use it as some sort of grand advice for the future but after many failed attempts at a speech it finally dawned on me especially after our cape trip that you don't need to hear this advice you don't need to hear from me about the importance of showing up in competing and working hard and pushing collectively forward with joy when things get difficult you don't need to hear that because you have already done it you've been doing it for two years these past

two years have been one very long game seven and after the initial shock and maybe a little complaining of our world being turned upside down you put all of that aside and fully embraced and owned your situation you rallied when the pressure became intense and competed hard not against each other in some vain quest for individual glory but for and with each other the most noble aspect of competition pushing and encouraging each other to achieve personal excellence not only in academics but more importantly in your own everyday lives so many throughout the country have found excuses to cave into the pressure of the moment you relished in it and from what i can see i would say you've won so yeah you don't need any advice from me in fact if anyone needs to hear

that advice it's probably me and i can't thank you enough for reminding me of this important lesson through everything you have done for each other i am grateful for the short time i spent with coach goulet in the boys soccer team specifically the seniors he reminded me of the passion and sense of family that is formed when teammates work tirelessly to achieve a common goal and have a lot of fun while doing it and i especially love that i got to yell patrick again but this time in celebration when he saved a penalty in a shootout i'm grateful for ap lit in nature being classes as you reminded me of the absolute joy and more often than not the delightful lunacy that a classroom can be when students genuinely care about and take responsibility for

each other's learnings your creativity whether gretchen's or sarah's art or nicole's poetry olivia's singing tom's guitar skills matt and jackie's acting in hannah's films jacob and allah's impeccable style or leah and jack and ian's progressively more insane scripts in a quest to outdo each other or carter's molding us like soft clay through his eloquent soliloquies or literally all of your exhibitions specifically alice and paige sauers and luke's which brilliantly explored the power of creativity to help both artists and audience to overcome trauma your creativity without question in a class by itself and even above that is your kindness to not only each other but to me i mean a bunch of you even came all the way to leominster multiple times to watch my daughter's plays and belly even made her cupcakes i mean who

does that obviously you do i'm so proud of you and so grateful that i get to watch you absolutely own this game seven oat is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet i think it is most fitting and sweet that your class's graduation just happens to be mr series final graduation as principal of tahanto if there is one person in my life who is the living embodiment of don't complain compete it is dying to sari in 2011 just before she officially became our principal to put it mildly things weren't going too smoothly around here i remember talking with her about the job and she really really didn't want it i know i and many others begged her to take the job she did and we are here today because of her i'm

not just talking here in the physical sense not just in this beautiful new building which she was instrumental in making a reality but here in a spiritual sense here in a communal sense for so much of what takes makes the hanto to hanto can be directly linked to her look how many tonto graduates we have working here it's incredible they are here because of our culture a culture that she helped create and foster for 33 years she shaped and molded thousands of people students and faculty alike and we are all the better for it i'm so happy for you diane i'm grateful for all the years who work together in various capacities from contract negotiations to coaching to curriculum work i'm grateful for your patience and understanding i'm grateful for your constant willingness to teach

i'm grateful for all the laughter and joy and i'm even grateful for the heart attack you almost gave that you and mrs aguero almost gave mr pacheco and me thanks to that horrifying and hilarious practical joke you pulled on us on the very first cape trip don't think i forgot about that and i'm mostly grateful that by your example you have pushed me and so many others to excel now faculty i ask you to join me on a diet coke toast [Applause] toast to mr serry and the class of 2022. here's here's the game sevens to embracing competition that will push us to excel into making sure that everyone with you is having a heck of a good time along the way cheers [Applause] now it's time for what we've all been waiting for before
