It's We are now on video. We are now on audio. >> Beautiful. I will call this meeting to order at 5:30. Let's start with pledge of allegiance. Move the fly. [laughter] To the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Do we have any additions, deletions, or changes to the agenda? >> We do not have any changes, nor haven't been contacted for any changes. >> Beautiful. Do we have any public comments? >> We have nobody that signed in. I haven't received any public comment via phone or email. And we only have Mr. Brennan here in the audience. >> Beautiful. Did everybody have a chance to review the consent agenda? >> Yes. [clears throat] >> Make a

motion to approve. >> I have a second. >> I'll second the motion. >> All in favor? >> I thank you everybody. One item I would like to talk about is just the HR had a little bit of change in leave with Miss Fry. uh she's now requesting a shorter leave from October to December and then we'll be back in January. So, we have now posted a a position for that long-term substitute for the 23 classroom and we've had one candidate reach out, but I'm hopeful in August we will have more candidates as kind of the dust settles in other areas. So, um more to follow on that. >> Cool. >> Sounds good. Perfect. Moving on to section >> approved modified. We did with a consent agenda. >> Oh yeah, perfect. >> Moving on to section

six, financials. >> You can see we're uh I should say Miss Courtney is not able to join us as she is with another district doing their budget presentation and hopefully budget adoption in that district. But uh talked with her this week and our financials are all in good shape. No surprises. >> I like that number still. There's still uh about 25 27% fund balance, which is is great as we head into the the end of the year as things are are winding down. But yeah, we're right on on target. And you know, as the longer we do this graph, you know, these two lines should get closer and closer. Um but yeah, we're still in in very good shape. Um very pleased and thankful for all the work that Nicole has done. and she also

has shared her uh monthly budget status report. You can see fund balance here at 27% or overall cash uh in hand and then the various funds of capital projects debt service which is a very small amount and ASB which we have still have a nice total in ASB of 44,000 and our TVF of a new bus when we need it of over 123,000. So, sitting in good shape with our financials. Knock on wood. >> Beautiful. Anybody got questions, discussion on financials? >> To move on to additional reports. Section seven, Mr. Bren report. >> Uh, I'll start with the gym floor project. Gym floor is nearly complete. Um, they're looking at wrapping things up uh next week as far as the floor goes. Um, they just need to Well, it's all dependent on when the volleyball

and the pickle ball sleeves come in. They're set to come in about next week. So, once those get in, I can drill the holes, put those in. They'll put the final two coats of uh varnish on the floor. That'll complete the floor. Um, we have some thresholds, you know, at the the entrances and everything like that. We got some new ones. Those are ready to go, so they'll probably be able to install those as well. So, that should wrap up the gym floor project. Um, it's looking good. So, I'm pretty happy with the uh the progress. We're still ahead of schedule about a week anyway. So, um that's good by some extra curing time and and whatnot for that uh that varnish. Um the bleachers are set to be delivered uh and they'll start the

installation on July 17th. Iron Creek Electrical will begin to uh install electrical, the electric box and hook up power to them and everything like that so they can test them out. May take them a couple of days, but the start of that will begin on the 17th of July. Um, we're looking at the walls down there, Mr. Coml and I. And um, there's u a number of areas. We could do some painting. We got a quote from TMC Painting out of Clean by about $24,000 in an effort to reduce that. Um, I'm kind of looking at seeing if the custodians would be able to paint the side of the wall where the bleachers are going to go um, just to cover that wall and then I can get a ladder in there and paint the

higher parts um, for that. Uh, and then that leaves them rather than four walls, three walls, but um, I don't know what the quote would be for three walls, um, or whatnot, but there's there's a number of, uh, chips, gouges, scrapes on the wall. So, u, if that's something that the the board would be interested in covering, um, just adds to the aesthetic appeal of the gym. >> Um, not a safety issue or anything like that. Just everything else, >> we're doing it and we're replacing the floors. When was the last time everything was painted? >> Uh, well, there's been touch-up painting over the years. Uh, you can tell >> there's different shades throughout there. Getting one clean coat so everything uh matches. Um, and then the idea is the yellow and purple stripe, getting

those wider. >> Um, so we have, you know, three [clears throat] brick layers of purple, three brick layers of yellow. Just adds a color to the gym rather than >> Honestly, what we did the gym for, we're getting bleachers. I feel like it's stupid to not go all the way and just do the whole darn thing. I mean, [clears throat] >> yeah, >> financially or we have >> you check with Clafy's phone. >> I have I can check. >> Yeah, good. >> Yeah, I [clears throat] think >> they're out of clown, right? >> Getting a couple more quotes would be >> I'm not a posted. >> Okay, let's have a new gym. >> Yeah, we're we're already gone as far as we have. Like, let's be real here. $24,000 in the grand scheme of all

the money we've spent. [laughter] >> It's like it's not nothing, but it's why why stop when >> I could start for another 60 years? >> It's like buying a Mercedes on straight tires [laughter] like that. >> Yes. Yes. We're additionally I I can check with Clafy's Clafies [clears throat] just just so we have that additional quote you know >> and I think if we can bring down that that quote by like you said doing three walls instead of the fourth wall. >> Sure. >> Yeah. I think that that's it's a good idea. >> Yeah. I mean save as much money as we can but I I think that it's >> I think we should just finish the whole flipping thing and just make it happen. >> Kids earned it. >> They have. [laughter] >> It's

not like we got enough money. Uh, all right. So, moving on then to the athletic field project. Top soil has been spread. Um, everything's as level as my skill level will allow it to be. Um, so, um, hydro seeding it. We're set to get hydro seed in there tomorrow. Um, that should leave us with um, ample time for that seed to grow, get established before the practice season at the end of August begins. Um, so we should have a nice green field that's playable. And then over the years, you know, we can make our improvements or whatnot. We're also looking at um some of the uh old padding that we have down in the gym, maybe taking that and adding it to the corner uh of the bus garage just in case, you know, there's

any out of bounds plays to have something to bounce off of other than a metal shed. Yeah. >> Um and then along the chain link fence there, it's 4 foot chain link fence. We have 4 foot panels. It'll fit perfectly. >> Is the field going to be firm enough to mow? >> It should be. Um, from what I've been told, the grass will uh the roots will be established enough to hold things together together after 35 to 40 days. >> Okay. >> Um, so I anticipate that the grass will be firm enough to mow. Um, but that's an excellent point. That's something that I could probably go out there and, you know, walk around just see how um how >> you right. >> Yeah. >> Deck. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, we have that zero

point. It's not the heaviest tractor or anything like that. Um, but if need be, I'll take the push mower out there until it firms up and just finish it up. I mean, it's 11,000 square feet that take >> Well, and and thankfully really the areas that were hydro seeding are in the end zones, you know, so they're not going to be right the high play areas >> and and uh the soil that we have on there, it's been spread for several weeks now and watered. So, it's had its opportunity to kind of pack down and firm up. The only time it really gets squishy is when you're walking on it um while it's wet. uh you're essentially walking on mud, but I anticipate once the grass is established and everything, it should be it should

be okay. But um definitely something that uh I'll check before taking a heavy mower on it. Um next steps, uh let's see, we've uh trenched out. Um we have the interlocal agreement with the water district to use power from the water pump or the waterershed. Um so we had the conduit ran it last week. They trenched it out, ran the conduit, we have the wiring, everything. All that's left is to be uh connected to the terminals and the scoreboard will be up and running. So, we're making good progress on that. We're set to uh be well on our way and have an athletic field by the uh beginning of the football season. And so, it's an exciting thing. First time we'll ever have a game here in East on our own field ever. So, uh

very exciting thing. I know the athletes are very excited, the coaches. So, that's a excellent accomplishment for East School District. Uh, as far as summer work goes, uh, custodians, they've begun their cleanup, uh, as you can see, uh, down the hallway and their classrooms are starting in the classrooms, getting those cleaned up, uh, rips, uh, stripped and rig waxed that are looking good. Um, we'll be working on painting the north face exterior walls. And then out here along this area, it's just some paint chipping off and whatnot, unsightly. So, I'll scrape that off. Get the, um, paint sprayer out there and get a good paint on there, paint layer. I'll probably look into pressure washing the walls just to get them good and clean so we have a good adhesion uh with the paint. Um

so that just kind of reduces the uh feature issues with the paint chipping off, you know, just having that clean concrete, helps it really bond better. Um and then repainting the fire lanes and the um student drop off curbs and whatnot. Um among other projects, uh landscaping and what have you. Uh, as far as uh transportation reports, just scheduled maintenance, oil changes, fuel filter changes. Um, I'll be crawling under those, looking at the airlines, making sure everything's coacetic there, there's no leaks or anything like that. Just make sure everything's good to go. Um, with some of the if I run into anything where there's more complex repair, I can always contact the health point decent mechanics. But so far, uh, the buses are running fine. Uh, everything seems to be fine. Just every few weeks.

>> Good stuff. Good job on the inspection. >> Yeah. Yeah, I was pretty happy with it. Um they didn't find any exceptions, so that's always a good day. Um when sters come in and they don't find anything no matter how hard they try. So, um I'm happy with it. >> Yeah, >> is good. >> Perfect. >> Thank you, Jeff. Sounds like you guys have a busy summer plan around here and it sounds like it's gonna look beautiful at the beginning of the year. Can't wait. Alrighty, we're moving on to superintendent report. >> Thank you very much. Uh our enrollment for June uh has remained the same as it was in May, is the same it was in April and the same in March. So no increase decrease just kind of remained static at that uh

headcount of 80. Uh you can see our overall uh FTE for the course of the year down a little bit from the previous year. Um you see the areas of green are our increases and our areas of kind of that light red are decreases. So still trending in the wrong direction but we continually work on turning that around. So hopefully we'll have some [laughter] good news about uh more kiddos in the door. Um speaking of good news though, um open ed our partnership with the open ed company and uh getting homeschool students into the district is going well. Um as of the June 8th, we had 819 families that have applied uh with 564 having done at least part of their enrollment. uh process and I do have some updated numbers as Rachel Cummings and

I met with them yesterday. As of yesterday, they have 54 fully enrolled students that are basically have been now vetted by Open Ed that they're ready to what they call push to us. So, they have all their information. They're ready for Rachel to start enrolling them into Skyward. And they have another 254 students that are now in open ed review. So, Open Ed, their team is reviewing to make sure these families have everything up up to date. So, we could get pushed another 254. Uh, and outside that, there's probably another 500 families that are have at least submitted one piece of enrollment. We'll, you know, obviously not all those families will follow through, but you can see we kind of have a pipeline built in. So, >> so there's potential on paper the size of

our school is going to triple. Yes, they felt comfortable saying that we could budget for 300 FTE of open ed. >> Nicole and I talked this week and uh I think we both feel more comfortable budgeting with 250. Uh that way if we come in under the under 300, we're not paying back money to OSPI. And if we get more kids than 250, then OSPI will adjust our portionment. So we're not going to lose money. Um we just will get it at a later time. But I just don't want us to be paying out >> the most sizable chunk uh if we can avoid it. So again, that was uh Nicole's thought process, too. So um the open enrollment, they changed their enrollment date. It used to be July 1 is now July 13. So

my guess is we'll probably have another big push of kids enrolling after the Fourth of July holiday. So that is continuing to to go well. Um, and you know, just some ballpark numbers. Let's say we have 250 students um, enroll with us, you know, minus the cost of the agreement with open ed, that's looking about 5,000 per student. So two 250 times 5,000 is a nice >> a nice figure for a district our size. So very very happy about that and just going to want to remind the board that it is we got to consider it as one-time money. We can't uh attach ongoing staffing to it because as we know OSPI and our legislature has been doing lots of crazy things with school budgets. So >> do that. >> Yeah. Uh I think probably

some of the goals is to replenish our capital projects fund with some of those dollars uh and look at other other kind of one-time big expenditures, but really we don't have a lot >> as long as the tree don't go. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, and they will. >> You swear in this meeting like that. >> And they and of course they they will. Um, uh, other part of, uh, open ed that I wanted to just update the board on is they did change their March 25 contract to a June 2026 contract. So, I ran them through our uh, our AI chat GPT. Basically, these are the the changes. Here's what was written in the original contract we signed. Um, they had full-time. they have now changed that gotten rid of the full-time and also I'm

going to talk about this in a little bit later part of our our meeting is um basically to get us out of the tech u loaning process they have now put in this into the contract that opened ed will purchase and distribute required materials to the students in the program not us we are not going to be the the [clears throat] tech uh >> it's part of their enrollment fees >> yeah part of part of their they are taking care of it That's one of the things I'll, like I said, I'll talk with the board about here in a little bit. Uh, we are continuing to do our enrollment and marketing. Uh, we have a little video that was has been produced, which um pushed me to way outside my comfort zone. I'll share that.

And I got some interesting feedback from the kids when they saw it of your eyes are closed all the time. Why are your eyes closed all the time? >> Leave it to kids. So they were, as you know, teenagers are so kind. >> So helpful, too. >> But we will second video is in the works right now. We'll kind of highlight what we do with outdoor ed. And then he'll do a third video. All of this kind of getting geared up to towards early August when we get potential new families coming in. And so he's also working on some static ads. But the uh I think he said the video has been viewed what like 2500 times. So, wow. >> For our little area, that's great. >> Especially all the open. I >> was definitely

seeing it before you were sending it out to us. >> Oh, that's great. Great. Um, so again, we continue to work on it, kind of fine-tune our message that what is going to resonate with our parents and the community [clears throat] and he's brought some good insight to us and we continue working uh with him in our ongoing marketing relationship with with the district. um board docks that uh I have used probably since oh the mid 2000s in in one district or another that I've been part of is like been bought out by another company called Diligent. Uh Diligent from what I can understand seems to be purchasing all these other little companies that do board management for nonprofits and then kind of putting them into their platform and as a result our price went

up 300%. So, I am now working with them to say, "Hey, we want out or at least reduce our price." Um, I haven't had a lot of success. I'll be quite honest. They don't seem to be real customer focused. So, um, I don't want to deal with these guys any longer. U, but I'm going to still continue to see if we can get a better price. In the pro in the meantime, I've been looking at some different um programs and probably the one that is probably most fitting to our needs and at a similar price point of what we're paying now with with Boardocks is called Bortable. And I do have just a shirt bought out by Diligent. >> We have a three-year deal with them. So, at least for the next three years, uh

we are we will be with these guys if if we sign that agreement. But here's kind of a sample that they that we've been working on kind of behind the scenes. But I would I'm going to kind of make the final decision here probably this week of about what company we're going to work with. They seem to be the most focused on what we need and attentive. So you might be seeing a link from Bordable here in the near future with and this is kind of the public site. So similar to Boardocks but a a little bit different. Um, but I'm being hopefully going to get some training on what they are uh going to offer us. So, you know, it's not boards, but it's also not three times the price. So, >> yeah, >>

we're happy about that. >> Um, hate to leave board docs, but that'll do what we got to do. >> It seems very comparable. Might have a little bit more in in functionality than we have currently with boards, but we'll see. Um but yeah, like I said, look forward to hopefully our July meeting we can be on our new uh platform which I'm leaning towards uh boardable right now. Um and that's the extent of my report. >> Fabulous. Anybody any questions for Karen? >> Any word back on the solar >> Mr. Oh, Mr. B? >> Uh yeah. Um on June 26th uh they will be out to uh do a walk around of the school. >> Okay. >> And then a couple days later they will come out uh June 29th they will be out uh

to begin the project. >> Yeah. Beautiful. >> So we're lots going on. Lots going on which is great. >> Yeah. >> It's okay. >> Lots happening in this little school. >> Yes there is. Um, do we have any board member reports? I just wanted to comment on the end of this uh school year and graduation and how amazing [clears throat] everything went. It was just a really inspiring and um incredible day and I got a lot of feedback not just here that day too but uh from parents and other staff members who used to be here and just um people that were really pleased with um how the school community interacted with each other and supported each other and they really saw that >> amazing turnout. >> Yeah, it was it was a great turnout.

I believe the comments that we were having were maybe next year we're going into the gym. Nice brand new gym, nice new bleachers. So, might need some more space for next year. >> I think we we might be ready. >> Yeah. Which is exciting. >> Awesome. >> Well, and if um open ed are those kids, those seniors, are they able to walk with our seniors? >> Isn't that K through eight? >> It's only K through eight. So, >> never mind. for now. >> The eighth graders, >> we might be branching out here down the road with with them. That's what other states are doing. They're kind of doing a K12, but >> starting >> Yeah, first. >> Yeah, I was going to say my my my workload with open ed is kind of >> but

uh yeah, we'll start small. We'll because high school and graduation requirements is a whole different animal. >> Yes, >> but we can get there. >> I forgot about that. But yeah, no, the multi-purpose room was packed. >> It it was packed. And uh how did uh the uh since I think your your family was back east, how did the uh Facebook live stream live stream? >> I think it went pretty well for a lot of people that I knew that were joining. My I have a parent who is not very techsavvy. >> I'm trying to call us during this [laughter] text. >> We already learned that in other situations since he's gonna have to figure it out instead and it's recorded, right? So >> and that was the first time we did it. So it

was kind of just a beta test. >> I thought it was amazing and thank you for for doing that. It was really appreciated by a lot more than um just >> that's good. >> I know my parents too. >> Even people at the past ones too. >> Thanks to Mr. Penoyer for for setting that up. >> Yes. >> I thought that we should add um um another cord maybe one for the folks who did the board student board. Something like that. >> Great idea. >> Yep. They're going to look like u generals from uh >> all the cords and stuff, but that's okay. It's their special day. >> Sorry, they can't walk. There's too many cords on them. >> Shoot. >> They'll survive. They're gonna have to roll. I I'm I'm happy to hear that

not only from a board member, but also parent. So, that's that's that's good to hear. I'm glad >> I'm glad we met the target for having a good day. And it was it was an emotional ceremony. Yeah, >> it it was good. That's a good bunch of kids. That was a great bunch of kids. >> Well, there was a lot of trying not to cry going on. >> Yes, there was. >> Yep. [laughter] >> Cool. Anything else? Are we ready to move on to board business? >> We're ready. Okay. 81. >> 81 is a resolution that has been suggested uh that we adopt uh as a board basically showing our support for an AL program. One of the things that Opened Ed has mentioned to me is we should uh probably publicly show that we

are supportive of providing different options for students whether they're through an AL program or homeschool program. And uh this just kind of outlines, you know, individualized learning plans, flexible scheduling, career connected, uh credit retrieval. I can see a typo I made right there. >> I was going to say that should be 11. >> Should be 11. you're referring to resolution 9. >> Um, so basically this is just saying that as a district we support families and students with alternative pathways to their education. >> I'll make the motion. >> We have a second. I'll second. All in [clears throat] favor? >> I >> thank you very much. And I did uh forgot to put this on the board agenda for the the docu sign. So, I have a hard copy here for >> another example right

there. >> Oh my goodness. Okay. Well, how about I will print it off in in executive session. We'll redo it. Thank you. I >> think I didn't fix my my my footer there. >> Uh the next item is this is what I mentioned in my superintendent report. This is a policy uh again that uh in our relationship with open ed that they are recommending that we we use basically will take the district out of u the technology loaning business becomes part of open ed of what they they do. uh we if they're a non-consumable item like a laptop uh if they withdraw from this this the district or from the program uh we can get those items back but basically is allow an open ed to kind of be the quote unquote the gatekeeper the

the tech inventory uh people because again if we have kids across the state I don't want to be in my office shipping things to Wala Wala and things like that that's happening >> that's up for them to do that. So um when we say non-consumables, it's tech tech devices, laptops, tablets, and Chromebooks. And because of this program is so personalized with the their families, you know, a lot of it is up to them what they purchase. Uh open is not dictating, okay, you must have XYZ. It's, you know, whatever meets the needs of the kids most. >> Yeah. >> And since we're dealing with, you know, K through eight, my guess is going to be a lot of tablets or iPads with the younger kiddos. Do we have a motion to approve? >> This is

a first reading. >> Oh, first reading. Sorry. >> Yeah, we'll do we'll do a second reading next. >> Just kidding. >> Just want to put that on the board's radar um for our second reading in in in July. >> Beautiful. Okay, moving on to exact session. >> Yes, ma'am. >> How much time you want? >> Uh can we have 15 minutes? >> Sure. Why don't we go with 17 minutes? And that puts us back at 6:15. >> 6:15. Perfect. Thank you very much. Thank you, Mr. Brennan. >> Thank you, Jeff. >> Jeff, [laughter] >> they almost camouflaged. I'm like, get all the way out to the car. You're like, We have anybody on? >> Didn't have anybody join us. >> I haven't had Becky text me in a long time asking me about the planes.

Now we're switch motion to resume the regular meeting. Are we back on the audio? >> Yes. Yeah. I didn't I didn't turn it off. Uh >> do we have a motion to amend executive session to conclude at 6:33? Motion granted. >> Do I have a second? >> Second. >> All there. >> Beautiful. >> Thank you very much. >> Okay, we are back to regular session. Do we have any sharing of good news? >> We heard all the good news. >> I know. I feel like we did good. >> Yeah. I don't have anything this this go around yet >> that I can confirm. >> Fabulous. The weather is lovely. It's we're going to manifest that it's going to not rain on Saturday. >> Uh if we do not have anything else, do I have a

motion to adjourn the meeting? >> I'll make a motion to adjourn. >> Second. >> All in favor? I. Perfect. Meeting concluded 6:34. Perfect. Look at us go, guys. Hour and 34 minutes or sorry, hour and hour and four minutes. Go. Turn this off.
