ready ready okay i'd like to call this third oh it's tuesday april 20th retreat of the tacoma school district board of directors to order and i will start by reading our land acknowledgement the tacoma public schools acknowledges that we're all in the traditional ancestral and historic lands of the people tribe of indians we honor the gratitude of the land itself and the puyallup tribe this acknowledgment serves as the first step in honoring our nearest tribal neighbors and partners who have inhabited this region since time immemorial and to whom we give thanks for allowing us passage to their lands we shall intentionally create inclusive and respectful partnerships that honor the indigenous cultures histories identities and sociopolitical realities and i also would take a point of privilege to just acknowledge the verdict that came out a couple

of hours ago i know many of us might be still thinking about that reflecting on it and may not necessarily even want to sit in this retreat for a couple of hours but i appreciate you all showing up and being here but i also want to acknowledge that some of you may just be in a little bit of reflective mode so just want to acknowledge that and lastly i'll acknowledge one of our colleagues had a birthday last week so happy birthday director bond right um so let's kick off our agenda we have a few really interesting topics that continue discussions we've been having for a long time um i'll start with our safety and security update and pass it to mr monroe or to superintendent santorno either of you mr mr benrob go ahead and

start okay good evening board members members of the public uh here to give a quick school safety update uh two big items i wanted to cover today uh and as you'll see in the next slide we'll have some time uh hopefully you know at the board's agreement to to get into some specifics on both these issues and what we're hoping will be a study session in may so the first issue for the update um is fresh off the presses you may have heard that governor inslee signed house bill 1214 into law friday last week friday this is going to be something that impacts us along with other school districts today and it's directly related to school safety so just to answer three very broad questions there's a lot to say on this new law and

we'll have time to get into it um not tonight but we will have time broadly house bill 1214 it's a companion bill to house bill 1216 which passed last year 1214 is a new state law that regulates certain elements of public school safety so k-12 across the state of washington unlike 1216 which applies to police officers applies to any school security staff or school security contractor and what it means for us and what it does is it makes a number of changes to the way school districts collect data around school safety have staff training for school safety personnel uh district policy about how uh school safety uh personnel should operate in different situations and there are some elements of family communication so those are really the you know we had to distill it down to

four big things these are the four big things that 1214 will have for us this is going to take effect september 2021 most of the provisions take effect september 2021 and so what we'll do and the reason that we're putting it in this update is as you know the school board directed superintendent sanford i think it was in early march i believe to come up with a comprehensive school safety plan for you to review um and this is going to be wound into that effort so at the time that the board voted i wouldn't have had a way to know that the governor would sign this bill last friday um but since we spoke last uh he did and so what we'll do is we'll roll in recommendations for how we can be in compliance

with house bill 1214 into the larger conversation possibly and this takes us to the next slide which is a brief update on the school safety recommendation process so what we have here is sort of a 10 000 foot view of how the process is going to play out over the next two months probably we have an interdisciplinary committee of staff that uh take what we've already heard from public but we've already heard from community groups what we've heard from the board and come up with recommendations for what school safety could look like going forward we've already developed this come come sort of brought this team together we've already met but it includes principles at different levels it includes our safety and security leadership leadership from hr legal and our social emotional learning experts and what

we would do is come together think about best practices look at data and then have what we call an accordion style share up with stakeholders so this is where you take sort of a plan or some ideas and then you go out to community and you bring it back in and you can incorporate the feedback you can take the questions and concerns you go back out you come back in um this the idea is that we would include both community groups who are newly expressed interests in looking at some of this and we'd include groups who you've seen already and heard from in public comments and emails to your offices and perhaps personal uh phone calls or emails that have come into you from public on this issue and we also uh will include student

groups we even had a session earlier this month where i was able to meet with student leaders in a graduate tacoma session um at the permission of superintendent santorno and got some really good feedback from the youth in our community and from concerned community members on this issue and then what we would do is move into a study session where we can get into some of these recommendations in a little bit of detail with a little bit of time and ultimately it would result in a board meeting a business board meeting where the recommendations would be presented and the board would have the opportunity to um to take a vote on it to move forward if those recommendations are not before those recommendations so that's what the process looks like like i said this is

a brief one i'm hoping that we can get in more detail at the study session um i don't know how much time we have but if there are general broad questions that you'd like me to address at this time i'm happy to do so thank you thank you malik um i think we wanted to spend the bulk of our time in this two hours on topic number three but i do think there's time for a round of questions reactions to what you presented so i'll start with um vice president bombray any questions or reactions um no thanks malik a lot for for this presentation i wasn't um completely up to speed on exactly what was in 1214 so thanks for the overview that helps to see kind of where you know it sounds all encompassing

and and that's in addition to the bill that passed last year which um started this whole conversation um earlier on so i'm looking forward to the study session when we get more detail thank you um uh dr strozer any comments or reactions uh no not at this point thank you director keating uh director bomb bright kind of touched on um the legislation so like that's really great information and i'm going to go back and review the legislation a little bit more um i'm also just really um i'm excited uh to hear that you were that you got to meet with um student leadership through graduate tacoma i think that's really amazing and that you're continuing to do that and i'm a little jelly like i kind of want to be there so i think that's

really great that you're still um that you know you're dedicate i i think really ultimately i want you to just know how much i i know we all appreciate but i really appreciate the dedication that you've put into this and the time and the thoughtfulness and thoroughness so thank you very much thank you yeah i have everything that's already been said the only question i have or comment i comment slash reaction i have to this recommendation process is just a want for a little bit more clarity about the feedback gathering section the way it's presented here even though you reference this accordion style share out an opportunity to incorporate feedback i'm not clear about where the um i guess what our intent is with regard to feedback is it really truly just to get feedback

on our plan or is there a want for any co-development around any particular aspects of this plan because the way it's laid out here it feels like well we'll just share with you what we've developed we'll get your feedback and we may take some of that we may not and the stakeholders that you engage are truly in a feedback lane so if that's the case i understand that and that's fine but the reference to the accordion style to me begins to hint at some co-development opportunity so if there is an opportunity for some of this to truly be developed and with feedback from stakeholders i would i wonder if there's an opportunity to engage any representative of community stakeholders in that front-end process and if not that's okay too but i just hope that whoever

we do engage is clear what lame they sit in with regard to how their feedback will be taken in and incorporated and how decisions will be made if that feedback isn't taken in i just want that to be clear for stakeholders from the start understood um and just to be clear there there will be a limited available limited opportunity for co-development i should start by saying that we've we already have uh many uh sort of petitions that have been filed of the comments that's been made at board meetings you've heard yourself from people that are very interested in this topic so we have a set of we have thousands of survey respondents who've shared with us what they feel is important to them um in a school safety package so we're sort of starting from

a place where we have information already before even developing any recommendations to share with community where we can say you know for example like the meeting that dr king was talking about the students reiterated this idea of balancing security and fear um like how do you develop a system where students can feel safe but at the same time not be afraid of the people that are keeping them safe so we have some of these sort of ideas already and so in a sense we're already incorporating some of these ideas the accordion style share out is just meant to show that um the people who have engaged with us on this issue and have given lots and lots of feedback about what they would like to see in their school district security package we had to

go back out to them so we heard what you said this is what we came and put together what do you think about it and certainly they'll have some things that they say great fantastic wonderful go with it and they have some things they'll have questions about it's possible to incorporate some changes that reflect what that feedback is i will try to do that um it doesn't seem prudent then maybe maybe don't do that one but yeah but that's the intent of it that's really happening the only offer is i don't mean to assume anything about your intent or anything i don't i've never been on the seat of sitting in like that feedback table and so i've never been in these roles but just as i'm i'm just thinking through it like if i

were one of these stakeholders what would i want to be clear about the other thing i'm thinking there's like if i were one of these stakeholders and seeing the draft plan i don't know how you plan on scaffolding the feedback process but if these your recommendations from the multi-disciplinary staff team includes like rationale so that people who are engaging with it understand why that recommendation i know they won't know the nuances about everything related to how the district operates any legal considerations all that might be a level of detail that whoever's giving feedback just won't have so i just too like if i were in the seat of needing to give feedback just again thinking through the lens of what might be helpful for me and understanding some rationale i think would be helpful for

whoever's in that seat but again don't assume what you already planned to do or not do i'm just speaking from my perspective of if i was sitting there yeah that makes sense thank you any other last comments from members of the board okay thank you all for the presentation [Music] so we'll move on to item number three policy review strategy update you know invite i think um general counsel troubad and miss anderson i think yes thank you so much uh susan and i are very happy to be back here with you we were just saying to each other today it seems like it was just the other day that we were here for the first retreat and we're very excited to update you on the progress we've made so far with updating our policy review

process so i'm not as fancy as malik i'm going to rely on tom and kevin to put up our slides for us and i'll kick it over to susan to start off by letting you know uh where we've come over the uh the last few weeks good evening everyone thanks thank you so much for having us here again um this is an update on our policy review strategy um tom next slide please okay so really quickly i'd like to just provide a recap of what we've already done uh with our policy audit we completed um this year we made sure that our district website has been updated all our policies are current ada compliant and accessible in addition in addition to that we've provided an internal source for our staff to access pdf versions of

our policies and we also completed a gap analysis that's helped us to identify policies that need updating and also some potential compliance gaps next slide please um when we last met we identified the next steps for our review strategy that included review of our current policy process and gap analysis we introduced revising the current policy process that we have to include incorporating community engagement and also to review all policies that come through whether they're new or revision with an equity lens and with these two components uh this will help us prioritize the policies currently going through the revision process and help inform our work as we're coming through the current process we looked for ways to improve the flow of things and we uncovered a need for a regulation that would help guide our work

around policy adoption and revision renee is going to share more with you about the draft of regulation 13 10 arc next slide please thank you tom well credit goes to our chief financial officer roslyn medina who prepared this great vizio visual flowchart i think we showed that the last time we were here that showed that process flow and so we started with that process flow as we susan and i were starting to update it um i recognized that maybe we need it also in a word format and in a regulation that supports our board policy on policies which is our policy 1310. so uh this regulation captures not only the existing flow that the district's been using but also proposes some updates based upon this policy strategy work that we've done so i'll direct you

just to uh number one a that's our first proposed change is that ospi now has a equity style guide and we're proposing that any time we draft policy language or revise it that the administrator reference that style guide for using best practices and language that supports equity susan i'll talk to you a little bit more about that in a bit we also added 1c because as susan did the gap analysis she was also comparing it to what our existing policies was to model policies and we realized that it may be useful to know sometimes when the district has actually adopted a wasda model policy wholesale without any changes and then other times where tacoma customizes the policies uh we may start with wazda and then add to it so that's something we're proposing that we

add our policies make it easier to understand where they came from in the future and if we go to the next slide um there's also some new changes we're proposing to 3 c and d we see we're proposing that before the policy comes to the board for first reading it goes through an equity policy team and one of the things we wanted to talk uh about tonight is what that equity policy team might look like and then also d community partners as relevant to the policy and uh we heard some really good feedback from communities and schools and some other folks so susan's going to have an update for that in just a minute as well that's going to be that section 5 on another way to obtain community feedback we'll go um now to

the next slide the rest of the flow is really pretty much the same it's going to give opportunity for the board to um give comment after first review and then revisions and then the second review and then the legal department will shepherd getting the policy up on the webpage so i'll go ahead and go to the next slide and i'll turn it back over to susan hey renee you might um all right i feel like we haven't had much time to talk and interact and this is supposed to be a retreat and normally we wait till the end of the presentation hold for questions and comments but do you mind it feels like a good breaking point to just pause and see if there are reactions to the draft regulation from members of the board

or any conversation specific to that so i want to open up to board members especially two i want to just highlight the work that vice president von bright has done in all of this and conversations with you all and i about getting to all clarity around next steps so maybe i'll start with um vice president bond bright just to see if you have any reactions to the regulation or thoughts or suggestions i'll open that up to you um thanks um president cobb no i actually appreciate um appreciate seeing you know seeing the this evolve as uh this development and throw over discussions and seeing some of the ideas um come to fruition in um concrete form so thank you renee and susan for really you've just been amazing in these conversations taking these vast ideas

and putting into practical approaches so thank you you're just miracle workers um i'm just gonna turn it over to those that haven't been as involved in the conversation so to the other folks on the call yeah thank you so um director stroser director keating i'll open up to each of you just to react to does this reflect like are we moving in the direction that you hope to see us going and any general reactions to the draft regulation more broadly yeah i'll jump and say i think we are moving in the right direction first of all i appreciate all the work that's been done uh renee and susan uh director bob wright jumping in here a little bit i'm sure director cobb was in there a little bit um but one one big thing that

i noticed and it was the first thing that well the nate mentioned was uh the the uh i think it's 1-8 and it didn't mention language choices should be consistent with best practices for supporting equity like then i was thinking about okay how is that possible and then you mentioned that equity was a policy team equity review team like putting something like that in in place and that immediately answered my question so um i'm excited to dig into more of what that looks like but as far as the overall work i think that we are definitely moving in the right direction so uh thank you thank you keating any thoughts at this stage yeah no i i agree with um what's been said so far and um i i am excited to um really discuss

what a equity policy like review team would look like um that seems like that's that's exciting to me and i did have and i think this is for president cobb the equity style guy the ospi equity scout style guide clearly a difficult thing for me to say um isn't that what um uh maria flores presented to us i'm just so excited about that yeah so i i'm i'm very pleased in the direction that we're heading so thanks and i'll just say from my own background knowledge i was at osti i'm a staff member when the this work got started and i was gone before it finished it came to fruition but just the inside knowledge we were grappling with some of the same issues we grapple with as a district like the policy and language

gets developed in lots of different departments and goes out the door with a review but there wasn't up until the style guide was developed a consistent framework for approaching what terminology do we use in terms of like students with disabilities or special education students there was inconsistency there and so i think this work really does reflect the same challenges that we're grappling with just at the state level so i think it's a really useful tool for us to incorporate as we like i just wanted to add too as we keep thinking through this discussion this was um a very logical and um you know foundational uh guide for us but it doesn't have to be the only one so i just want to make sure that you guys are thinking creatively and as we're talking

if things pop into your head that you've seen that you feel it would might um add value to this conversation um and and to the the review team as they go through their process just keep keep note of that i just want to add one more thing that um i do appreciate the addition i don't remember who was one b or one d i don't i don't remember but um when in referencing the wazda model policy uh and having you know spent over a year really consistently involved in was i i know that they're also striving to come from an equity lens so i think that that's just a great just another um touch point and another accountability measure so i wanted to i meant to mention that i appreciate that's also included thank you

so much credit for that idea goes to susan and joey grant on on my team came up with that so yes and to uh to both uh director um strozier's comment and um and i think director vice president bob wright's comment the language in the in the regulation says a model may be the ospi uh style guide so um i i hope that captures sort of the same thing you were saying about this doesn't have to be the the bible um but it can be actually one of the tools that we use when we're looking at that language and i'll throw it back to susan because she did a great job of of actually getting the style guide for us can i say one more thing before susan begins and may have landed in a

different place but when this style guide was initially beginning to be developed it was really about communication not so much about policy making and it was about language and communication so i do think to director bomb bright's point we probably will need some complementary pieces to it but a great framework to think about communicating in ways that are affirming and culturally responsive and and i'll just quickly add that i think one of the pieces that gets to that is is the wasda pieces as uh director keating said but also the bit where we say community partners as relevant to the policy so that we're not stuck in this whole mindset of being equitable around a certain um think uh you know we've got whether it's the you know something with the tribes or if it's

something you know with with a community of kids with special needs or whatever it is we can take input from that community in a more um meaningful way um get beyond the style guide so it's a fluid and flexible we're trying to build something that really addresses equity across the board and is fluid and flexible and meaningful to the community that we're speaking to go ahead susan sorry no that's okay that's what we're here for okay thank you so much um so um that's good to know history on this president cobb about how this style guide was in the works um because it just seems really thorough and just really detailed and i think it's a great a great tool for us to have um so the last retreat uh we were lucky to get

a copy of this um you know from ospi because they had been working on it and just released it um so from what i understand though it's intended to be a living document so it's going to be you know updated from time to time which is good so i'll make sure that we're you know informed of that as well so we can make sure we're keeping on track and being updated um but back to this being a tool uh not only to review uh and use while drafting a new or revised policy you know it really does provide um suggestions around language to use or not to use and if we make this a regular um tool that we use or refer to within our process i think it speaks to consistency and promoting this

within not only all of our policies but also like in memos or information we're sending out to our families or internal staff you know the language used there could also be used and translated you know into those communication pieces as well we also intend so as this is a tool i'm gonna make it available on our hub site so all departments you know can use this and refer to this as needed um and this brings me um to our next slide so we we did listen and we were taking notes and there was a lot of thoughtful feedback that came back from our community community members and partners including vibrant schools and black education strategy roundtables and how to go about offering an opportunity to provide community input for each policy that's going through the

review process so the slide that you're looking at now is just a little snippet of our policy page on the public site and to the right you can see an area where it would highlight the policies that are currently going through the review process so this would give the chance for our folks in the community to be able to review the draft form of the policy and provide feedback so we were thinking a couple ways they can do this is they can attend a board meeting and provide feedback in person or i could create a microsoft form it'd just be a simple form for them to you know enter in the information get their feedback or they can simply send an email to the school board office so this would offer an opportunity or an

avenue for a community to be able to you know share their feedback on the policies that are currently you know going through the review process okay i think i'm turning it back to renee and if there's any uh comments or thoughts about the um community feedback portion that uh susan's proposing that we would add to our district webpage i just um i just want to thank you for that addition it's not something that we've had before and i think it does provide kind of an opportunity for transparency especially in between the first and second reading and having that greater visibility that's in progress the only wondering i have and sorry i didn't raise this sooner as we've talked about this a couple times before is that um in cases where we get extensive so will

the feedback be reflected back you know like um imagine that through this system it'll be submitted to us but will there be a reflection back about like what feedback came in i know that creates another layer of work um so it's probably a decision point that we need to come to in some way or you all need to stew on but i just wonder if um there were feedback and how or whether feedback loop that would be reflected back to the community yeah i think the example that we've used a lot as a model has been the review of the revision of the student discipline policy that we did um and in that case um uh malik and eric hogan and laura allen the four of us were the ones who formed a team to

shepherd the changes uh through the district and um we we got a lot of feedback before we brought the first reading to the board um so we didn't necessarily identify where the feedback could come from for example mark mccachney from ospi gave me some great feedback and i don't think i highlighted that in the track changes and said this came from mark mccacheny um but we generally said you know these are some of the people we got the feedback from then in between the first reading and the second reading we did some more extensive feedback um uh lal quasim from the black collective gave us some really good feedback and in that case um i recall we did highlight and say this these were some requests that had come specifically from the black collective um

i think it's something that um we want to figure out as we move forward because there may be times for example that we get feedback from a particular group and we bring it forward the board and the board discusses it and says well we appreciate this but we're not going to incorporate this feedback into the policy so um it can also be um pretty overwhelming like what malik is shepherding right now um to be able to identify everyone so um looks like maybe josh has a good idea for us no i i appreciate what you were just saying renee i think it articulates some of the challenges i think we're hoping as a community we understand that we're we're valuing feedback um that we are trying to incorporate many stages of the process but this

isn't about giving credit and then there's some challenges sometimes about just because individuals may give feedback they may not have the same level of expertise where that feedback may be not appropriate at the time for the policy and so i think if we have the grace to use this as a way to collect feedback for in the intent of creating better policy that is more representative of the community i think we're a better shot and the last piece that i would just add is sometimes policy revisions have to be made uh pretty quick and it uh so that it's dynamic and it may not be the same level of feedback loop every time and so helping folks understand that whether it's a change in statute or a variety of others you know sometimes we have

to move fairly quickly and there isn't a space for community input in the sense of uh it's a technical aspect that we have to make the change based off of the law and so those would be some variables to add to renee's that i would just ask us to consider thank you any other comment i got a new opportunity for feedback okay we'll keep wrong actu actually andre i do i have a thought about feedback and i'm just like taking me a little bit to process the conversation around it and and one wonder i have is setting up expectation and i think andre you've gotten to kind of the heart of that or you know like making sure that when we're asking for feedback or going out or you know um uh soliciting feedback that

there is a clear understanding of what the purpose of the feedback is and i think andrea it seems like that's kind of what you were also trying to get at and so i think that that would be important because then it doesn't set up anybody with or i'm gonna back that up it could help um mitigate um misunderstandings and you know um false expectations so those are just some of the things that are kind of simmering and i see josh wanting to share again just just is it appropriate that we add some narrative to the webpage which susan explained uh some of this maybe that's as a way of being transparent in there that gives people an understanding as they're going through yeah definitely what i was thinking susan sent me a side message so

i was just trying to get involved yeah superintendent santorno you're muted i was gonna say that um you know also um and i think renee kind of hinted at it that it makes so much sense to let people know that they're going to see their feedback in the text with you know when it comes back that they're going to be able to recognize that they said that and then if you pair that with saying you know we won't use everybody's ideas and suggestions and sometimes if you you know by sharing what some of the feedback is it's easy for the public to see that we got contradictory feedback you know that one person felt this way and here's the person that feels exactly the opposite so it helps to you know to illuminate the fact

that we can't use everybody's feedback because everybody doesn't feel the same way and it's a good lesson to our public to know that there's a variety of opinions yeah can i build off of something that superintendent said like that also makes me think about especially depending on what the policy or what feedback we're asking it impacts different groups and different people so i think that that's really and and so then that also in my mind ties it right back into the equity lens of assuring that what feedback we're receiving um you know and and i think um it's a great opportunity um to help inform the community about like how we're growing and learning in this process yeah you know um when this idea came up i think we're i was thinking about the rule

making process at the state level when agencies need to adopt new wax or to change wax the beauty of not being um subject to those rules is that you don't have to do every little thing but there are some things that you can learn from like for the example like josh mentioned when a law changes you got to make the change pretty quickly that reminds me of like emergency rule making but not like there's so there are some parallels and some places where it breaks apart but on this topic of feedback i can imagine like with the question around security we got tons and tons of feedback and that equivalent at the state level it was like the discipline law changes tons and tons of feedback and so the concise explanatory statement in that case

was 25 pages usually it's one page so i do appreciate like renee and josh and others just raising that it's gonna vary there's not gonna be like one size fits all way to approach reflecting the feedback back maybe in some cases we get one point of feedback and it was like a good recommendation so you'll really see that reflected in the second draft and in many cases there'll be contradictory feedback so we'll take what we think makes best sense and is best fit but there will be a lot that's left on the table so i just think that as we're just talking it through and getting clearer about what expectations will be for community and communicating that to them and some narrative i think all of this will just do our typical continuous improvement thing

and get started and keep getting better at communicating about it but this i think is a great step forward great and it's really our intention again that um we have a way that anybody in the community can give feedback um on via the webpage we'll post it when a policy is in review that'll be there as a given um but since i've been with the district and malik and i have worked on updating policies we've reached out to community members as well to to ask for feedback um and so that's part of our process that i think we've really been doing especially since the discipline process so um there's there may be times where we uh specifically reach out to an interested group um uh it's kind of like the uh budget uh advisory committee

and that's it's interesting because that's kind of close as well to the equity uh review team if uh tom you want to go back to the slides um there's really kind of two pieces here we want to propose having a group of community members come together as an equity review team um but then there's also uh community feedback that may come from organizations that isn't necessarily part of the equity review team for example when we first started working on the security and safety sro issue we reached out to the state organization that oversees sros and we also reached out to the aclu so um there there can be community groups in addition to an equity review team so um but one of the the proposals is that we uh have an equity lens to view

our policy adoption and revision through and we wanted to give some space tonight to talk about what that process could look like how do we define an equity lens and then who could make up that equity review team so um if we go to the next slide one of the pieces um we wanted to remind the team is that we we do have a policy in place that addresses non-discrimination and equity and these are the protected classes um under washington law that again we're talking about a baseline level that we want to ensure that none of the policies that we adopt ends up impacting either directly indirectly through a disparate impact of a group based on race religion color national origin ancestry sex gender gender identity gender expression sexual orientation age marital or veteran status

disability or the use of a guide dog or service animal those are the protective classes for discrimination but equity the policy goes on to talk more about what equity is and the policy defines educational equity is on the principles of fairness and justice in allocating resources opportunity treatment and success for every student so that's those are the principles that i think we're looking at as we talk more about not just discrimination nondiscrimination but equity and the next slide [Music] so there are a few models that are out there um that the board might want to consider when we're um thinking about that equity lens um and um one of the models is the psesds racial equity tool um that's a very comprehensive tool um and i want to give credit to justina johnson who is

our academic equity director and also marie verhar who's with us here tonight who uh both have been championing equity for the district that back in 2016 they adopted some of the principles from the psesds equity lens and put together a tacoma equity lens um and i don't know marie if there's anything that um you'd want to add about that might have caught her off guard no i'm here thank you uh i don't think we have a lot to add other than this is a a tool that's been in existence for quite some time and we thank psesd for the brilliance behind this work and i'm sure others collaborated on it as well and back i believe in 2015 16 somewhere in there it was early it was about the same time that i came to

the district um you'll remember director patrick johnson was leading uh the equity work at that time and that's prior to john justina coming on or myself and they worked with the board at that time to look at the equity lens tool and took the racial equity tool that pscsd had given us and that had provided for us and they made some modifications to it so that's um about the the plan the place of where it's come from and it's been used in a variety of different settings within tacoma public schools and it's something that we have promoted to schools um as part of our equity toolkit for schools to use as they're making decisions excellent questions which again came right off of the racial equity tool so a little bit of history where that tool

came from thank you so much marie um so um if we go to the next slide um so in addition to i think deciding about that equity uh lens i think uh the board probably also wants to have a conversation around an equity review team so i don't know president cobb if you want to pause and talk a little bit about the equity lens or you want to go ahead yeah let's pause and just before we move on to who would be involved i'd love to hear from members of the board like your reflections just generally on um the what i see is some um frameworks the most that have been offered like we have the cultural responsive style guide that really gets that language and communication a framework offered through the tacoma equity lens

tool that's been developed the puget sound esd tool had an overarching focus that was more explicitly about racial equity so just want to hear your reactions about how you want to how you'd like to think about leveraging these tools um is one sufficient should we be amy like just your reactions i won't i won't lead the witness in any direction too much but just want to open it up to your thoughts about these um tools that have been put forward and offered uh start with maybe director keating can i go backwards from my typical order or not uh honestly i'm just trying to process yeah that's good it's a lot um and it's exciting um so i i do really like the tools that are being in place and i think maybe i'm trying to

um and honestly the slide and in preparing for tonight the pscsd slide is so tiny that i can't i could i could have gone to their website i'll just say that but it's really difficult to read the text in there in comparison so but i you know i have actually gone through some of their training and uh through p s e d e p s e s d um and uh i actually was able to i think it's been three years or so ago they have a um an anti-racist training train the trainer program or um that i went through and it was just extraordinary and i still reference so i i love that we were the pieces of this or b have been incorporated and i guess maybe my question and i don't know

if that question is to marie or to renee but wondering if like the is part of the question between the tacoma equity lens and in the slide the psesd slide are we being asked to add to adjust the tacoma equity lens are we i think maybe i'm a little unclear about what the specific question is around that piece yeah i i would say that you know several years back some adjustments and justina is on the call too and justina please feel free to jump in as well because i know this has been an integral part of your work as i said a few years back there was some um there was some question about taking the whole racial equity tool um as it was quite overwhelming it has quite a lot of questions and we

could i see that i believe you've popped it in there is that correct um president cobb she's popped in the original one and so at the time the thinking was and some of the board members were actually involved at that time as well and the thinking was to narrow it down so there's no um there's no nothing that says that equity tool that we have that we've published out that we're using as a district is the be all end all if you as our school board believes that there are other pieces to add to that that would be valuable and necessary as you review policy as you review programs initiatives whatever it may be uh you certainly would have the freedom to go ahead and do that it could come off of that psesds racial

equity tool or it might come off of other equity tools i was on a call today with ospi and we were actually talking with directors from all over the state of washington about other equity tools that are being used across the state and there are many so i i don't believe there's anyone saying that it has to be this one or that one i think this is the beauty of this conversation today is you as our school board get to really dig in and say what do we believe it should be justina i saw you pop on your camera did you have something to add there she is sorry i was having a little bit of trouble my apologies um i just wanted to say that everything that we create and distribute is along and

aligned with psesd and osbi so we don't just create things um you know from scratch we but we come together as a in a convening or um we use guidance from the psesd ospi whether it's documents whether it's training so fantasies training that you um attended lisa i also attended a few years ago um and the goal is that when we are putting together documents and guidance to our in-district staff that it is aligned with the pscsc and osbi guideline so we've been doing that for quite some while up quite a while and um so i don't know exactly what the question is about but i just want to put out there that i feel like you can't go wrong when you use pscsd and ospi as your guide for um the work so right

whatever the question is that would be my comment to stick with ospi and psesd thank you justina thank you marie so from my perspective a question on the table is how do we um operationalize these tools in a way that's usable by a review team wherever we land on the composition of the review team now i came onto the board in 2015 and i anybody can correct me if i'm wrong i'll just own it this is my perspective from like sitting around watching things not watching things i'll just say it was my perspective early on my time on the board that um there was a question about leading whether or not to lead with race and so i i know that at that time puget sound esd was very direct and about leading with race

and leading with racial equity and so i see a lot of um similar language in the racial equity tool that puget sound esd puts together that's reflecting our equilibriums like some of the guiding questions and all that seemed pretty comparable but the difference is explicit considerations of race rather than equity more broadly but i think um that this board has talked a lot about leaving with racial equity given that race is a factor that impacts all students but there are also these other protected classes or student identities that we want to be mindful of doing the same level of review around to make sure that we're not um um disadvantaging or unfairly treating any group of student along those lines of various identities so to me the question we get gets to like do we

have an enough in a framework that or enough diverse representation on a review committee that represents specific identity groups to be looking through the lens of all those different um student identities so that our policies do get a full and comprehensive review that is explicit about not only race but also gender identity sexual orientation all these other things um w superintendent garcia yeah i think you know one of the things that's reminding me of this conversation is we continue to work in the field around equity and cultural responsive continues to evolve so the moment that we say well here is the one be all end-all uh is more likely to be out of date and out of stop learning so i'm reminded about the conversations around the board had around the equity policy and that

was pretty trailblazing for school districts to have a separate equity policy at that time um and i would just encourage us to maybe uh in the and i don't know if we can operationalize it this uh mr blood is this maybe that we identify that we will check for the latest resources amongst a couple of these agencies and use that in the review of the the policy and consideration um i think that it also is important that um the staff uh created the equity lens and um although i appreciate that ospi and puget sound esd has a lot to offer so does the tacoma staff and mr johnson wherever he is right now was a courageous leader that changed the conversations in the tacoma public schools and he um and so i i'm not convinced

that we need one set lens but maybe a an intentional lens to be constantly applied and then as you mentioned president cobb i think the people of tacoma in that who's the equity team they will be able to locally contextualize what's appropriate and um i think that that's important that that membership represents those protected classes um in some fashion and and my last piece of it is is that i think there's an opportunity to also build trusted education with those groups when you have a consistent group of partners that are looking at it with you because you can build meaning um and educate them as well because not everyone just because they has a policy expertise to them so i think they can also be trusted partners so that was a lot of rambling on

my part but if we can functionally or operationalize it by articulating that we'll look at the latest version that may give us a safe spot director bond wright and then superintendent santorum superintendent santorum does your comment follow up on w superintendent garcia's i'll let you go first okay you're muted my comment is really brief i was just gonna say too that you know having our own lens and being able to look at that also allows us to grow because we're going to learn more and change more as we go across and so we don't want to say this is it and you know we're going to use this forever because it's always changing yeah nice president bond right um yeah i was just gonna say too that i appreciate everything everyone said and i love

the way uh we just are discussing this because we're coming back to the center that just remembering that um everything is changing and i and i do think what we were trying to get at tonight was we've got this process that we're talking about that we seem to be um getting coalesced around that we agree that this is a good process and so then we're talking next talk about the the review team and so this was kind of well what are we asking the review team to do um and and what are the tools we want them to use and this has been such a helpful conversation to hear that we all acknowledge their multiple tools out there they're multiple perspectives and and yet you know we have one uh which i didn't even know

about until the end of the last last conversation when um susan renee uh sent it to me and i was like okay then well we're a lot farther along than i thought so this is this is really helpful the the other thing i wanted to say is that what the work we're doing around the equity around policies and everything else is integrated with the work we're doing around racial equity trainings for the staff um and what we're trying to do and i know that uh superintendent santorno has been leading this work um around the racial equity training and i think we can't expect change to happen just because the board passes a policy that is you know we feel um respects the equity and and pushes equity it has to be from from the those

that are interacting at the very ground level with the kids as well and so i just want the public to know um that that tacoma public schools is actually looking at this in a very holistic manner and we're we're not just talking policy review we're talking operationally how do we change the perspective around um how we in how we teach and how we how we treat um our students and each other um in in both at work and in classrooms and and at the administrative level and in our community and so i just be a leader in that um i'm not sure i'm being i know i'm like josh i'm rambling but i i just wanted to say that it's part of the bigger piece of what we're trying to do at tacoma public schools

it's not it's it's the policy piece but it's integrated with the training the professional development we're offering to all tacoma staff um to get that a better understanding about how they perceive uh how racism is is a part of uh institutionalized in our system and how we all have to be vigilant about addressing it whether it's racial equity which is primarily what we're talking about but also all the other um isms um that are involved well i'll just say i like the idea of having consistent tool used across the district and i appreciate the work that justine team have been needing to maintain this tool the only lingering question i have about it is like when i look at the format of the puget sound esd document there are a set of look fors to

go along with the like the item or the criteria i just wonder and don't know if we have similar look for us that like a team could use to help guide the way that they approach looking at that question in the context of policy review and if not maybe that's something i think that would be helpful for trying to help folks norm on these items but i don't know how the tool has been implemented up to this point superintendent santorno the des i i believe in marie and justina can both speak to it better than i am but i can but the design team has been so has working to be is working to be so explicit about here are some practices and here are uh some things that you should see in the classroom

uh in order to have um you know to be culturally responsible responsive to the race of students too justina yes so um sorry for that particular equity lens tool we have not necessarily created a guiding document to go along with that at the operational level at you know policy and board level it could certainly be created and something that anything we do is like a living document that we're always trying to improve on um over the time and make more useful um but we do have the tps building level leadership equity equity framework which is the cultural responsive teaching piece which actually absolutely does have look force attached to it so if you get a chance to spend some time delving into that form you'll see what it looks like at the classroom level and

the school building level not necessarily at the policy level but we do have we have done work around that so but as far as the equity lens tool we can always add add more to it to enhance it so that it's useful at the operational level at the big level as well and you answered my question perfectly just you know i and i was thinking more at that policy level like what are the look for is at that level like the classroom and like building level stuff was great but for a team that's looking at policy what would be those look for us thank you justine um josh w superintendent garcia yeah so i i think it's um it's a little bit of style right so articulate equity and lens the five are questions that

are pretty mirrored to the puget sound esd and so when you look at the workforce they're broken out of the elements of those questions including you know who are you involving the stakeholders a variety of other pieces so i don't think you can go wrong with any one of these tools as a piece i think uh we're going to i i kind of look at it as is the three legs of the stool one is the lens that you look at um the second is the equity team that helps you provide local context to that and then the third is you know your your staff expertise everyone from the legal counsel um to you know the superintendent's office to the the practitioners and i think that's your three legs that you really want to continue

to remember that one lens applied by one staff member is going to have bias in itself but when you have the three legs of that stool then you really have a chance to triangulate bias prejudice and hopefully catch those before they're implemented so um just for you to consider that it's not the one tool per se is that three-legged approach yeah i agree with your comment and i think that when when some of us talked about we're just thinking that different people have content expertise some people have context expertise and people have cultural expertise like everybody brings a different um part of what you that lags to the table and can look at it through those different perspectives and lenses yeah uh dr drozer i know you don't have any problems speaking up when you

have something to offer but i wanted to make sure to make space no i i i'm good i mean like i said i'm spending that time processing but i think that we have some great tools at our disposal so i think that if we are staying fluid you know what i mean especially with uh creating a equity a review team if you will by being able to look at a situation or a specific policy and say uh this fits best or this fits best and will put us on the track to you know to do what's right uh for for students so uh at this point i'm looking at both of them like i think again like like josh said we can't go wrong with either one of them so we've talked a lot about

kind of potential tools that the team could use to review our policies through and that's just one stakeholder group that will be offering additional feedback on policies as during the development process but the next piece is like who is on the review team i'll turn it back to renee and susan to walk us through some guiding questions related to that great thank you and i did see justina you had your hand up again was there something else um i'm sorry you'd like to add i was just going to say um to not go when we're thinking about looking at tools and using tools to go too specific kind of actually limits our ability to be equitable and so when we think about equity we think about support for all students so the what is that

all students are supported the how though looks different if you're actually looking at it from an equity lens and so when you start to drill down and get really specific on tools that are used to guide us it starts to limit our ability to do what we need to help and support students because it drills it down so specifically that you just cannot use that flexibility and creativity creativity to move the needle and to support students and meet them where they are so um sometimes it's really good to just have a set of guiding questions by which we we think about when we're making decisions without really specifically drilling down and telling people it looks like this because we're looking at it from an equity lens it's going to look different as we're supporting all

of our students wow that's thank you so much and um i'm i i see susan feverishly taking notes thank you so much i think we're getting some great feedback already on what we can incorporate into this draft uh regulation i'm hearing the fluidity is going to be very important with the equity tool um so tom if i can um ask you to put the slides back up the next slide we had was about the equity review team and so if we have some fluid tools that will be available who will be using those tools and um like i mentioned before we have some advisory committees that are out there already in the district we have a citizens finance committee a budget advisory committee we have a discipline appeals council where we have community members who

come in to help us adjudicate when there has been a dispute over um a student's discipline and so that was sort of a model that we looked at in wanting to bring together some community voices that are representative of the tacoma community um tapping a representative for example from the black collective education committee from the asian pacific community center uh from latinx menidos of south sound the oasis youth center and others and then those community voices can use the equity tool and provide the district feedback on inclusive language um and um we can have that feedback incorporated into the review process and the next slide shows this is one that um is a slide i just cut and pasted from our discipline uh presentation a few years ago this just showed um the the groups

that we asked review our discipline policy as we were going through the revision process and so i went back to this to think well these are also some of the community groups out there that we might think about for putting to putting on an equity review team so um i'll give it back to you uh president cobb to talk about the who might be on the equity review team and i'll give it right back to everyone else just to open it up for reactions or thoughts about the framework for thinking about the who and suggestions or recommendations that people have maybe vice president bob wright um well i was um i was just sitting here thinking about um whether or not it's it's good to have a collection of people from the community that can

um tag in tag out on on a review team you have some folks that are from the district or others that are consistent and maybe some that can tag in or tag out as as appropriate or as they're available um and so i think we i'd love to hear a little bit more about the format of this committee because we have a lot of work to do because we're going through we've said we're going to do a policy review um through an equity lens of all of our policies or at least the most critical ones that impact students we decided as a board in our brief conversation the last time we talked to say that we want to focus on students the one the policies on the students but we also have some very important

ones that are coming up and so i guess i'm trying to figure out um it's a big ask to have the same people sit on it all the time because there's a lot of work to do um and so i guess i just want to get thoughts from the rest of you as to how do you how do you see it functionally happening if we're going to have this review committee um provide uh in input you know and actually filters for for the work on every every policy that we review what are your thoughts on that so i have a well one part one notice that i had about the um or i would say a missing voice um are the students with disabilities or those with disabilities like that hasn't been mentioned and i

think that often in my experience in in um in working within equity and improving equity um i often hear from um disability justice advocates um that they are kind of the last group to be heard from and so that would be important to me because mobility um you know ableism is is i know it's something i have to keep i have to check myself with because it's not um something that is that directly impacts me so that's one notice that i had and then um to elizabeth's question um what feels like a thousand years ago um was i think only 10. i actually my first introduction to policy work was with the district through the harassment intimidation and bullying committee that um uh jen cavista led with bernadette ray and that was um a pretty

long commitment by being a part of that committee so i guess um like it was important to me so i put in a couple years you know in that pro i think it was maybe two full school years i can't quite remember but like it was something or like the work that i have been able to do with the city of tacoma through the human services commission like there are people that i do believe that would would give their time to this kind of work um as long you know if that's the first if that's the need and the ass and maybe there are other ways that people can engage in in smaller portions if they can't fully commit to like a long-term process but i think and and i might be wrong here but

it feels like we have a model or at least multiple models of how we've been able to do this kind of really robust work with community partners at the table for an extended period of time um so i you know i guess i'm wondering like do we have to reinvent the wheel or are there ways that you know are there models that um that examples not models but examples where you know we've already done some of this work already and i see josh's hand go for it josh yeah i just um i think in order for the if i'm watching it from home i'm thinking to myself well i really want to be a part of that work but i cannot be i mean writing policy um is uh a lot of work so we're

not asking folks to write the policy we're asking folks to i think uh president cop you added you know you have the content expertise you know a lot of school policies has been grounded in wazda model policy but we're not stopping there we're asking these folks to bring their contextual expertise and so you know this isn't necessarily even all coming to a room together and discussing it's here's here's what the latest draft is or here's what we're trying to create and some policies are going to start from ground zero which will take more extensive work but some reviews are very dynamic in the sense of here's the equity lens that we apply here's the policy some of our policies are extremely short and um and and i'll just remind us um as we've listened to

the conversation we've been applying equity lenses for a while now um and so we've learned more and it doesn't mean there but we are looking for a trusted group of partners um and not all of our partners have um policy expertise but it is a good way to bring their contextual views in a consistent fashion and so i think there are racial groups that have uh uh have been identified i uh the students with special needs um the lbgt community would be some if we can find samplings from each of those um and you might want to consider the other model that i've seen uh renee it's the discipline uh uh review uh uh i forget the exact name but it's a membership right that we're asking for a membership and a commitment for i

think it's two years or you know and so something like that even if it was a year then people could say okay i can dedicate that and we can clearly define we're looking probably for an hour a month and that's what you're realistically talking about potentially is an hour a month reviewing it looking this but we can't ask our community partners to dedicate 12 14 hours a month at this work that's not fair to them and um i think that's an unreasonable expectation yeah i uh go to superintendent santorum next and then i'll let you um respond dr keaton i was just gonna piggyback on what josh said so you know if you look at that committee as ebbing and flowing and not static maybe they all have one training together and you talk about

a process and then you're able to peel off and have some people that are really interested in this policy and so you know it becomes a group that's um you know that that isn't static but can go out and you know look at you know look at different policies but have a common piece of uh a common piece of training and information director cheating did you want to respond yeah i i was just thinking like you know the commitment that i made when i was talking about the hip committee before like that was like we met once a month and so it you know like it was something that was really feasible and you know that that that you know we could add those of us that had the ability and the privilege to do

that i so i i you know i'm nodding yes to both what josh and carla are saying and just to clarify like my idea of commitment like a long-term commitment you know isn't that they would spend multiple hours a week or a month but it would be a consistent schedule or con like a consistent expectation of time i think that that that's really important to be able to honor people's that when they're volunteering on an honor their time um you know when when yeah so all in there thank you um and i think if anybody's put anything in chat i'm not getting it my chat's not live so please raise hands and all that stuff um i just wanted to um thank um deputy superintendent um garcia for adding like that context i agree 100

just my time on the board it's not like we're adopting and making policy all the time like at a feverish pace we might have a little bit of a accelerated pace just to get some of this review in like just key policy areas but it is something that seems to ebb and flow as we talked about it just in our small group conversations with um renee and susan and elizabeth and i we did surface and brainstormed some ideas just like superintendent santorum raised about doing a training for everybody so everyone gets grounded and has a sense of the equity lens and has an opportunity to ask questions maybe there's even like a sample policy that they work through just to have it some experience to get going on that and then people would be brought

in and engaged as unnecessary and then two i think we have a great opportunity now that we've been working in this team's mode to really leverage technology in all of this people aren't having to come physically in anywhere and it might to also be an opportunity to for renee and whoever the district content lead on the policy is just to give a quick overview of the policy and the context for it just so that people have that to go on so it doesn't have to we don't we can't scaffold the process in a way that it's not a huge lift for folks but they still have an opportunity to bring that more contextual and cultural perspective to the policy review process other thoughts from other board members um yeah i just wanted to ask forgive

forgive my ignorance here but are we in the clear or is there like a you know a roadblock when it comes to including maybe in a single individual from each one of our classifications so like a classified staff a certificated staff and an hourly staff since they serve our students all in different capacities is it because we're looking at district policy is there something there that says well we can't we can't really do that or is that something that we could consider so one thing for us to consider is just if you take the the process let's take a step back the process of having two readings is designed for to be inclusive for anyone to make a comment um so i think one of the challenges that we all face is this so is

this an individual's perspective or are they representing a specific agency or a group and the difference of that um and so there is no legal reason why we couldn't include a variety of different folks the question around there is what equity perspective would they bring when we talk about students in this case so i i don't think that there's a a road block per se i think that there's also an inclusive way for already for school folks to participate um director bond wright were you gonna make a comment yeah i was i was gonna um say once we get through this piece um and i wasn't sure if we were ready to move on to the so how does that look and how do we how do we choose how do we um invite um

what does that look like and i think we probably have gotten a good idea um that that we want this group that's willing to commit that's you know go through a training together be a static and not be static but be an engaged group um to help help work with us on this process but then the question is who do we invite or how do we um go through that pro that the outreach and i think what director strozier was actually asking was starting that conversation to say okay so do we have a set of categories that we choose from that we sort of say we're we're hoping to get you know representatives from each of these categories and whether people self vol volunteer in or whether there's a some sort of a nomination and

i'd like to sort of have that conversation i think that's a great um place to move to and i just want to look back and make sure we take note of dr keating's comment too about the disability community and making sure that that's reflected two i think when we had some earlier conversations we elizabeth and i and small group talked about student voice too and whether i don't know if this is the right approach when we talk about our student board members maybe this being an opportunity that's an extension of their participation on the board but just generally student voice in some way and then i also wonder and i think it's listed here about family voice at this stage too and whether there's a spot for parents or parents of high school middle school

and elementary school kids um that's not outlined in the protected classes necessarily and sometimes family input is an explicit requirement is but is this an opportunity to establish a category two that includes like family voice on this review too but i'll pause there superintendent santorum so i think that you know what uh what we're going to encounter um all of you that have done policy work you know there's policies that you can revise and change in 10 minutes right because they just need you know a small little tweak and so i think what we need we can we can put broad categories and i think that's where you start elizabeth i thought you uh you outlined that well and uh director strozier is that you you know start saying okay so how can we get

this wide spectrum and then just realize like i said you know you get the training but for some your you might just need a staff group to actually craft the difference and then maybe you have a another group that just looks at it through that equity lens that's pretty perfunctory and doesn't have to go through a long process where is uh you get one like a discipline policy that takes a lot longer and it takes more extended look at families and students and so you know it's again it's not going to be one process fifth fall we're gonna have to have different strategies for different groups so i think the beginning um director bondrai bombright is that we do have this uh wide lens and then the other thing is it doesn't preclude us from

saying whoa okay this is this policy is about something we haven't had to pay attention to uh before i'm making this totally up but we know we're getting ready to have lead in the water i mean uh a legislation not we're not gonna have leather in the water but we're getting ready to have this legislation that you know really is going to have some more complex uh rules about lead in the water and so who needs to be at the table to bless a policy uh you know that we adopt based on based on that and that's real different than um you know a a policy that is not that you know it doesn't go for district-wide it doesn't involve everybody so i think if we can be flexible and have one that ebbs and

flows and that also uh anticipates and if you say you know we we're going to need to have these standard people and renee has a sense of what policy you know what policy work looks like and you know sometimes we just have policies um the board members know where wazda has said change this and use these words and then i think um uh director kavas taught me that just because it comes from mazda and says that thou shalt doesn't mean that the vocabulary is good or that it has it can't be improved upon so you know we get our people who are interested in wordsmithing and making sure that the vocabulary is clear so you know i think we can have a wide a wide group of people that that are agreed to uh step

in and step out as needed um deputy superintendent garcia uh just as a way to propose something to move forward with um i'm reminded of susan and renee's opening right that we're going to have a space on the website where everyone can provide feedback you do have strategic plan filters that represent by poc communities uh lgbtq students with disabilities ell those may be uh identifying community groups that could start there um in the absence of having some kind of narrowing you're going to have extremely large groups um in each one of these so you have the holistic opportunity through the website for first reading second reading that any citizen could provide feedback inside of tacoma or not in sarcoma um it's just a natural process and we've seen some of that in our advocacy uh

where people are writing in from arkansas uh uh in there but using the strategic plan filters you may be able to identify established community partners that represent um these communities that would give you a place to establish a policy review committee i appreciate that and i was thinking more like we established what identity groups want to be represented and how many representatives from that group and ask people to self-identify as being a member of that group and to fill that c like we it feels like we can put some arms around it in terms of size based on our thinking about what seems manageable and big enough to get the feedback we want when we need it but but i don't think we can get necessarily to that point tonight but it seems like we

can have that balance of like my representation and some arms are around it at the same time so i'm i'm thinking that this is exactly what the what i was hoping was gonna generate so i'm thinking that maybe if we if we send it back to staff to come up with uh you know what they've heard tonight with a proposal of how we might approach um the policy review team piece in terms of how to invite or how to include and then train then maybe we could um have this discussion again um in i don't know quite when maybe at a study session or something where we can talk through how we could implement start implementing this um but i didn't know if um the other thing i wanted to say i'd be remiss if

i didn't say that you know the work that we're doing here around the equity lens is really well integrated into the work that we've been talking about that's happening at jmac around the whole looking having all of our partner organizations policymakers in partner organizations look at how we um build a more equitable community um through you know building community wealth and looking at health and safety um and and see when i say health and safety i mean health as in physical mental health as well as safety as in safety and security um and so we've got these three buckets um and and we're looking at at how we provide services from all these different agencies and and you know tacoma public schools is really a leader in this and i'm i'm super proud that this

this group is uh digging down into this so hopefully what we're developing can inform how some of our partners look at their policies and we can then learn also from those that are doing the same work so um i just wanted to say the timing on this is excellent and uh director strozier um and i have been talking about this and and he's going to be diving in more deeply on the on the work with jmac so that we're going to be bringing a dual voice to the to the table pretty regularly on this so and with listening to what we can bring back to this table so i just wanted to mention that while we were on the topic superintendent santorum do you have your hand up for to say something or is that

left over hand left over okay um any other reflections and thoughts about next steps um renee is susan any uh do you feel like you have enough direction from us to keep iterating with us on this you're muted down ah i got caught um i think so our last slide uh just had um what we thought the next step would be after this retreat so um i think one of the steps is um we got some great feedback um around the regulation that we can incorporate and then also um uh i think making a proposal about how to engage and invite um a policy review um equity review team um and then also um i think in the regulation we've got some language around the equity lens that we can work in so we can

do that and um get that back to you for review does that sound like catch everything i think so thank you that's great this is great okay that's all we had thank you so much for this this time and really it's an honor to get to do this work it really you know susan and i were both commenting that this is this feels like this is the kind of work that will really make a difference for our students in the community so thank you yay i'm excited for it too it feels like an engaged and thoughtful process so appreciate the time and effort that you put into it okay we're going to transition we've got about 20 or 32 minutes left in our retreat for the last two topics that are really meant to be

conversation starters we've had a lot of um preliminary discussions about the policy review process and we've talked and engaged about that for a couple of meetings so we wanted to spend the bulk of our time really getting to next steps there but we wanted to loop back on a couple of items including committee roles and responsibilities and board professional development that have come up in conversation along the way but we haven't really spent a lot of focused time on so item number four committee roles and um the i sent to the board members and superintendents and tournament deputy superintendent garcia and advanced a couple of guiding questions for this discussion but they're not involved meant to limit the conversation but just to help um be some guides but when vice president bond breitbart and i

were thinking about retreat and talking about brainstorming topics that have come up along the way one of those was consideration of the boards and committees that we serve on and how we can be more effective doesn't sounds like it we're doing a bad job but how we can be more strategic about our engagements on committees and boards and to spend a little bit of time reflecting on the places that we sit as a board and why we're there are those right places are there some seats that um be more appropriate for us just generally how we show up when we're there like as board members what are our responsibilities for potentially sharing information with those bodies about what are priorities for our board or and then um conversely how do we think about bringing feedback

from those conversations back to the board to help inform our actions too so um that's just generally that kind of the setup for this conversation just to get it started i think you also have in your email just for reference a list of the current boards and committees we sit on um some of those we sit on because um by because of bylaws or other um requirements are required to be there but some like our engagement with the pta are a little bit more discretionary so i just want to open it up um maybe to vice president bond wright to share some additional comments about um her thinking about why this conversation is necessary and maybe to kick us off with some thoughts about um a potential next step or way that we can keep

moving forward on this item now i think you did i think you did a great job of of describing it and that's exactly what would you know my my thoughts were is how do we how do we improve um the communication loop between and among um the board members and our community so if um and i think we all go to meetings we enjoy them you know we're there we hear and then if the question just comes to mind you know are we there to to listen are we there to participate and i think in some cases it's perceived depending on where you are which of these you're on you know your role might be perceived differently by the the committee itself and so i think we just really have to understand that when we're

there we need to participate and be willing to say this is what we're doing at time public schools and this is how it's impacting you or it could impact you and vice versa and so my whole um drive for this conversation is to get us to be more confident and engaged and um and really and really use the community relationships that we have by sitting at these community events um effectively to learn and to be able to apply what we hear by coming back and sharing it meaningfully rather than just report facts like i went to this meeting and this is what we talked about everybody it's always at the end of the meeting and everybody's exhausted and we're ready to jump you know so it's i i don't know i don't know how to

improve it but i just want to make it more meaningful because you know i see the excitement on your faces when you become you know you say and then i went here and you know you're every single time you know people they're they're just passionate and it shows but we don't get we see that but we don't really get what you learned or um how it applies to the work we're doing and same when you go to these events yes it's good to listen but i i think it's also important to think okay what what do i need to say to this group about what our work is on the equity lens on whatever it is so that they know that we've got their back or that we understand their issue or whatever it is

and and be more participatory it's just a thought so i feel like there was a lot there and not a judgment just there's a lot there um some of the like um and i feel like i need to break that down into bite-sized pieces so first of all like i i i feel like this is true that um when um scott heinz was still with us that there was a um a mechanism at business meetings where there were board reports so it created and and i felt like i thought that that was new-ish but that there was like that became an opportunity for boards so when we go to these meetings like that is a space where we can share out um with the community and so so there's that and i guess maybe um

to that point like having um expectations among our ourselves as the board of how do we do that and um maybe even just because you know i didn't necessarily i didn't get like a here's a how-to and so i you know like i started going to the wazda you know attending mazda and fortunately elizabeth was there with me so i could go you know like um sort of figure it out but what i started doing as the person that was as once i became the legislative rep is when there was information and it slowed down i mean clearly you know the pandemic accelerated a lot of moving information but so like then i it kind of moved from every week here's new information that i'm disseminating to the the board and including um the superintendent

deputy superintendent and then um so that's you know one mechanism where we're keeping each other informed right so i think there's multiple kind of multiple steps like making sure that we're being accountable to ourselves for the roles we're serving and then helping our call you know the call our colleagues be informed so that's one piece and then also i feel like they're like i've kind of come to a place where i've been on several was the calls for example that i'm like well there's really not a whole lot to share out and so there were several weeks where i didn't really have a lot to add that to bring back and so i think it was maybe it was just last week where they're like oh there's some very substantive great information that i can

then present but also give that narrative of saying hey here's why you haven't heard much right and and because there's times where you know it's not neces i don't know that it's i'm i wonder if it's necessary to share a lot of the the um uh let me think i want to say this differently so at the with the board reports i'm filtering like what is really what you know what is the public what's important for the public to know right and there there are specific things that's you know like this is good information for us and then what is it what what information does the public need to know so i think maybe also as i say that like maybe having more clearer expectations of us so that you know no matter who's in

that particular role or any other role that we are you know hey here's the expectations when you sit on these committees and you know this is these are the steps so i think that kind of gets to what you know like that's one part but then the other part that i hear from elizabeth too is what what is our conduct sitting in these roles and what are the expectations since we are a consensus board and we do not speak you know for the whole we are representing so we don't get to speak on behalf of so i think like that making sure that we're really clear around that and and i'm not sure and i'm gonna um say this last thing because i feel like i'm talking really fast um but i'm not what i'm

also wondering about is is this something that you all envisioned we would put into writing and like have that be saved maybe a part you know like the first place that i think of is you know maybe it can be on the website on on our board page like expectations of committee participation um you know as one spot and then also you know in our um what is that called corey you just got the most recent version of it uh on board um um manual right like so i'm gonna stop there um director strozier i wanna go i have a comment but i want to i just want to say thank you to lisa because i i think you basically just answered what i wanted you to i mean yeah yeah corey you want to

offer me yeah we we definitely need uh something of that magnitude in the manual because you know yes that that would be extremely helpful for newborn uh what i would also say is that um i had some notes i think that obviously communicating out relevant information from our respective committees is obviously the given doing it in the board report section is is one way i think that waiting until then could eventually prove detrimental to the information right you are you because folks could be sharing out something you already heard due to the gap between our meetings from the at the diocese so it could be i mean our communication as a board is is there right we we talk anyway so i think that in between community meetings uh in between committee meetings a conversation

with another board member regarding relevant information that hey i'm gonna bring this up from the dice but you probably should hear this now what would benefit us a great deal yeah i agree with that like the expectation at a minimum is that you carry back relevant information to the board but you should use your discretion about whether or not an email right after the meeting is probably the most effective way to communicate it because of the timeliness of it or whether it can something that can wait for a board meeting because it's also helpful for the community to be aware of it that i think we should be using our discretion in that way lisa i think um you brought up as you were talking and the question about in writing i think is a

good one and i think it should be something that could be added to our current spreadsheet that outlines the boards and committees and i almost can see like it varies for different committees like our role there sometimes we're like pure liaison mode and and maybe purely liaison mode and almost like our participation in head start policy council is written into their bylaws but it feels mainly like liaison because you're not like a voting member but then i have the question of okay but i should have a conversation with the current chair and with um the director of head start about how do you want me to engage here because sometimes it's just the director cop do you want to offer anything and if i know that i'm going to have a standing five minutes to

give an update or something that might be a different dynamic and i might come prepared to share some things but sometimes that doesn't happen in the meeting so it just depends on the day so i i say that to say that i do think we should add a little note um that speaks to specifically is this you're there because the bylaws speak to a requirement like the audit and finance or committee requirement or the transportation safety committee or a cte committee like why we're there are we a voting member and not a voting member and just to begin to build kind of a running knowledge more documented knowledge base around each of those committees and even with jmac like the rolling its structure that rolls who's in the pres the chair and vice chair spots

and which years and um if there's a liaison i mean sorry an alternate um how does alternate stay up to speed if they need to like there's just lots to like um helping people get onboarded more quickly to these roles so that they can be effective more quickly that we could probably do to scaffold folks's engagement to dr strozer's point so i have a question for that or i wonder like what it makes me feel like that that calls for a next step and so that next step would be like um like wondering about providing like an example like writing to all you know to uh to all of us saying hey and like i'm thinking about the way that because um i think that elizabeth would also do you know there have been times

with j mac where there's been hey here's some information but i um in my thinking and i might not be correct here but i feel like i'm the one that does has done kind of a regular like email update of wazda for example and so maybe um you know having a couple you know i don't know if it's maybe something elizabeth and i want to you know like but it feels like this is where some of us would have to like maybe put together like here's some examples of how we could report out and expectations and i think it will vary because there are some committees where i don't think the typical norm is whether to be much of substance to report out that's relevant to the whole body like uh so i just like

with your watson engagement i think that there are those big pieces of feedback to carry back and with jmac engagement especially as of lately there's been a lot more to that's relevant to the whole group but with some of the other committees like i don't um i don't really have a good handle at all on the happenings with safe streets like so i don't i don't know if that's because of the nature of the board meetings and the agendas or if it's the nature of just how we've communicated about this stuff so i wouldn't want my other us to establish like to justina's point from the previous conversation a protocol that's not flexible enough to respond to the needs of each committee and i also want to be really mindful of not establishing minimum expectations

of board members that are hard to meet for full-time working individuals like we've been in the privileged mode of operating on teams that has allowed many of us who have full-time like nine-to-five jobs that you have to have to drive an hour to like themes has allowed us to be more present i think in the last year and a half midday in ways that were just not feasible for certain um certain of us so i'd also too want to be mindful of keeping the standard of how people show up reasonable for everybody all citizens of all kinds of work and life situations to be effective board members thank you for saying that i i didn't want to start this off and make you know just create make work for people i think and i love

what you said about um taking the committee board of directors committee summaries which is a nice summary of what the purpose of that committee is and just add a little piece about you know what are the what are the you know is it in statute is it you know is this a requirement or do we just you know what how did we get here or whatever that is and sort of say you know what is that what is the role for this and if it's an advisory role or a liaison role then know that and if it's if it's an active role then that's good too and and i think um yeah and i also think that as lisa and i have said we we've sort of developed ways to you know to just report

back to just email but that's a time-consuming uh way to correspond and so um i and i you know we i have more time lisa has a little bit more time so i think that that would i don't want to put that down as an expectation but i also know that it's really hard um to director strojer's point of getting off in a meeting and thinking now i've got a call for other people individually and have the same conversation four times and then take and then of course like i'll talk to director treasurer and he'll say something so profound but i've already talked to director keating and and director cobb but you know what i haven't talked to director leon yet so then i have to go back and say well now do i go

back and talk to dr keating about what it's very complicated because of the the whole bit of not being able to have more than two one of us one other person to talk to so i just want to make sure we don't lose the gems of the connectivity that we have in the community or that the community only thinks there's one director that they can connect with or be with and and and i think that um and and i'll use jmacking as an example it's great because we've had some fluidity with um you know andrea being the you know the vice chair when i came on so i could learn at her feet on what was going on and and then she you know became president and wasn't there as much and so i just

sort of stepped into that role and then so now you know with corey coming on and i'm you know spending time with him and just really sort of encouraging some a role for him that's going to be more active um i think the more people that see the the strength and leadership we have on this board and the commitment to the work which is hard work that that j max about you know is doing right now um i think that that's a good message across the board to you know how we partner and i think that that's what i'm trying to get at how how do we make sure and leverage um the because i'm just so impressed with what i hear coming out of the administration here with the superintendent and and her team

about the work that we've been doing around all these issues that all the other partners are working on too whether it's safe streets or what they're trying to be everybody i think is trying to address these very difficult um emotional um conflicting um conversations and if we can bring to it some richness i i just think that's part of what we're here for okay and thank you for having this conversation i it's it's been helpful so am i here oh go ahead lisa i just wanna like one thing that elizabeth said like i also in my mind i think um you know establishing that it isn't just like you know making sure that that there is interaction with all of us not just some or one of us but to to build on that like

there needs to be sustainability because there will there will be continued change on the board so how in my mind i'd like us to be able to establish um practices that first are equitable and that are sustainable beyond us so to me that is is is important and um and kind of that um the heart of i think part of this conversation yep definitely so i hear two positive progressive steps forward one we've got clarity again that at a minimum we need to be communicating back to the full body items that are relevant from the meetings whether that it can wait for our board reports you'll continue to use that structure to lisa's point that was relatively new as um director heinz was leaving was in his last six months or so on the board

so we'll continue to use that structure but there's something that's more timely more pressing that you think you should communicate in advance please by all means use emails and give a call in the ways that we communicate with each other normally in addition we might work with tracy hopefully to update the document that reflects all the boards and committees we're on just to add those additional details around is it a liaison are we there by bylaw or statute or whatever the case may be just to provide just a little bit more insight into why we sit there the one outstanding piece i think that we still need to do or get to in a different forum and maybe um just as a next step for an additional um next step for this is just to

really take a look at those communities beyond those where we are required to be there and think um spend a little more time reflecting on are these the right ones are there places that are more appropriate or less appropriate for us to be do we have the bandwidth to add are there things that should come off and just do a little bit more of an audit of where we're sitting just so that we're all feeling good about how we are i'm spending our time in that committee or board role capacity but i do think the two items that we've come up with so far are good for positive steps can i get a clarification did did i hear you say i mean i i that you would we would ask tracy to do that no

i mean just work with tracy because she has she's that's what i was gonna say i was gonna i was gonna go oh yeah she's gonna just get out because she's not gonna know so i'm i was gonna suggest that maybe tracy um could you know interview each of us on our committees and we could or something like that because i i don't know we i'm just trying to figure out a way where it isn't falling on her but no no no i don't mean it to fall on her i think we should each based on where we're sitting right now do our best shot at coming up with a couple of people on those items um and maybe she can help us like clean it up and get more consistent in our language but

we need to be the ones too thank you thank you for that clarification no yeah no no um any other thoughts or comments on this dr strozer yeah we one one of the guiding questions you provided kind of triggered um i know we can't do it right away so i was thinking about wiaa oh yeah like one of the areas that we are we are not representing is is in relation to athletic policies and things of that nature and i know that during the wasda uh events there was an election force to represent the region i know that you can't just join a commission or a board for wia but i think it should be one of our prior not priorities but we should take a strong look at yeah taking that election process seriously

so that we can also have a voice as it relates to athletics because we know a lot of our students are so that's their that's their thing right that was there that is a great point and i know from my own experience at some point in the year i needed to approve something that was wiaa related and it was pretty straightforward but i felt like i should have had more context on overall process and structure than i had for approve i i mean the item was straightforward again but i feel like there is a missing link for me there so i think that's a great point for us to pursue so thanks for raising that and i know they're right well i was just gonna say that also so it made me think when you

were talking about athletics it then made me say yeah athletics and arts so like arts would be like another area where i don't know that we're you know really engaged and and i don't know where that would be but making sure that it's you know athletics and arts would be um you know two great areas cory were you gonna follow up i was going to say though we might not be able to get on a wiaa board at this point right now there are a couple athletic directors that i used to work with when i was an athletic director that are on the board that i might be able to lean on to for pertinent information about our area i know we have our rep i don't know we're like that but i do know

uh the people that i know so i feel like i can lean on them to get some some important information if necessary thanks we'll follow up on that okay great and and just as a yeah maybe you could get connect with the was to rep and start you know making them and finding out what's going on with the wasda piece too okay thanks everyone um so with our last eight minutes we'll turn to our last item board professional development and again this one was intended to be a conversation starter with an eye toward really we know that come december there will at least be one new board member but there are a lot of elections coming up so not completely with that eye but just thinking more broadly we've talked about board professional development um

over the course of the last year and a half at least or so and even before that and we have talked a lot about what onboarding for new board members looks like and how we can better support that and be more intentional about that process so um we thought elizabeth and i thought it was a great time to bring back that conversation of what should board um professional development look like and what should those offerings include and what do we think we need as a full body to be most effective and then as individuals what kinds of professional development opportunities could you imagine board members having access to there's obviously a budget and process kind of implication to anything that we would propose or come up with but we wanted to start the conversation now

again with an eye toward the fact that there will be some real board reorganization in december and a need for onboarding new member at least and really just starting off another calendar year strong so we thought that this was a good time to start that conversation and to try to plan toward any training or professional development opportunities beyond like nsba and wazda that folks based on your experience now see as potential needs for the board and also to knowing that we've just gone through this year of covid where we really didn't other everything became online if we had it and so pretty much it was wasda or you know nsba and and there wasn't you know we weren't we were just putting fingers and dikes on other things so we just didn't have time to

sit back and reflect how could we what could we do collectively as a board um that would help us uh work better you know work well together and and you know move in the same direction and all of those things and i think there's constantly things that we should be checking in on that you know it was a crazy year and so in anticipation of hopefully some return to novelty um it would be just wanted you guys to start thinking too about what it is if you were if you wanted to do it you don't have to answer this tonight but just what if you wanted to your own personal uh professional development what do you think would be helpful to you to help you do this job better and then um the other one

would be what could we do collectively so that's something just to take with you after tonight and i don't know if you were gonna bring the sub director keating but you may it might be top of mind but the one of the conversations we've had about this in the past was reflecting on our individual experiences serving for the first time on kind of discrimination appeals committees and um having some support knowing how to engage in that context as a kind of uh in that role a decision maker in that role so i think that's definitely something to put on the list of kind of training opportunities that would be good for all board members to have an advanced sitting in that seat the first time but that was one pin that i remember putting in

this topic as we talked about this before yes the answer is yes that i think that's really important and um you know just for the for those who would be watching this part of like my experience i think i've done three of those um appeals hearings and i've had the benefit um of going through um basic mediation training like in a very deep and extensive uh mediation training and so like i already had some skills going in but um you know that that isn't necessarily what everyone else you know other board members would have and i feel like they're you know there needs to be a baseline of how how do you even do that like what are the expectations um and what you know like learning how to listen in those settings is a

different skill set than in a conversation and so i think identifying those pieces would be really um um really beneficial for for the process and for the those that are you know filing the appeal like i think like from a um equity lens we need to be very prepared to be in those seats and in those positions um and then i don't know if anybody else was going to bring it up but i know like um i think some of us i don't know if all of us um us you know like we have you know the the book the governance core so like as as a group like do we choose something that we spend um not just like one conversation in right really building like over an extended period of time we are

going to continue to have this conversation and share our grow our growth and learning from it and so the governed this book the governance court actually brought it to the meeting oh you can't see it oh there you can anyways um so but like it has like i think the other thing too that um you know for new board members coming on like and and i know for myself this was true like i had um opinions of what i was supposed to be doing or what my job was going to be and then i went oh and so like understand i think it is really important for us as like especially because now we have kova to reflect on um and this last you know 14 15 months to really reflect on um how do

we govern right and and i you know i've told some folks in the community like i really basically have learned how to be a board director during crisis so now i also get to and because i was three months in and you know the crisis hit and so i think making sure that we um are learning together to govern um effectively is really important so finding a way if that's a book study right and and also making sure that we're the ones leading that conversation that we're leaning into each other to have that um learning and growing opportunity so i love that idea and um so is that a suggestion that we and of course it that we actually uh officially decide that we're going to do like a book club every month and or

whatever the period of time is and that we actually have you know that we or do you want to do it in more chapters like the first three chapters and then we have and then how do we do that do we do that at um i've said at the end of a study session i mean i'm just trying to figure out how we could do this where we're adding it not to a business meeting but to the um or maybe we aren't meeting on the first thursday of the month maybe we we add that in if people want to do that and come in i'm just trying to think through how to operationalize it but i love the idea and i think it has to be unstructured enough that people um actually are kind of

have a deadline to get the book the piece of the part of the book that's we're going to be discussing red in time so it isn't anyway just a thought how what you had in mind i see superintendent santorum so i want to give her a chance to speak um but i just thought about like the cyclical nature of things like you do it one time and then there's new people like you create cliff notes when you did it so that those people can read it on their own and read your clip notes so i'm just thinking about the future of who else is coming on and on boarding and just people having the time to commit to that i do think it's a great idea because there's just a foundational knowledge to be gleaned

from it but i was just thinking about the cycle of something like that superintendent santorno um i i really excuse me i really didn't have anything specific to say but just wanted to say that we definitely would uh you know facilitate it happening and that you don't have to lead it you know we can have someone else lead it so that you can just read and think and talk this has been great just to watch the four you know the four of you have a conversation uh back and forth um and so you know we definitely could uh arrange it so that you have that kind of time thank you any other ideas that are top of mind and again this is just the start of a conversation it doesn't have to be your best

thinking on all this but anything else top of mind as we're coming up on 801. so i have a question about like um one thing that we wasn't having that hasn't been mentioned is committee of the whole and like maybe that's the spot where we do some of this work um so i just wanted to put that in as a as a possible placeholder of of a space that might be more appropriate for us to be doing you know this kind of um building that into you know rpd is built into something like the committee of the whole that's the full sentence i'm trying to come up with thank you for getting suggestions i would i would also think obviously that's coming up on 802 no i'm kidding uh we should look at uh something

like a disc assessment i don't know if you guys are familiar with the disc assessment but uh it's uh what's the best way to put it uh we did this at my day job in small teams with my work in the county so the reason why it's a good assessment is because it really it helps to land in a deeper understanding of yourself and other people so essentially it's a personality assessment that will help them improve teamwork and all of that and i think that is it's huge we did one for real shortly after um uh uh superintendent i mean super again director keating and bond bright came on and director bond bright said we should do it because corey didn't have the benefit of hearing all the other styles and i said well i

think we could share what we came up with but there are going to be some new members in december maybe y'all should wait until that so to your point you proved me wrong and director bomb right right but i think your suggestion is good so if y'all already did it it was a different it was a different like um work um work styles learning style personality kind of assessment we did that in one of our retreats yeah director copy you've actually done the disk assessment a couple of years ago i think as well so yeah it's probably a time that we do it again um but yeah it's it's really important that we understand who we are as team individual team members and now that make up form relates and supports us as a holistic

team yep jackie yeah i just want to add like we did the personality like we did that i think in january of 2020 and then it was like crisis right so like you know we did that and then it like we didn't there was never a follow-up right there was never an incorporation of it so what i think would be for me at least what would be helpful is having a point of you know doing it and then like a revisiting right like how do you incorporate that into um and i feel like we probably would have gotten to that had you know the world not turned upside down yeah even if we created little stickers for ourselves like oh right here lisa yeah and i'll say you know i when uh during that i

did actually pull out the um when i was you know feeling like something i was saying wasn't getting hurt by a certain you know person or another i would look up and go oh okay that makes sense and then i would change my approach so i do think it's helpful and and i would you know i think we can bring corey you know share what ours are with him and he can tell us about himself but i do think it's also true that to go through something significant um in an investment of time with um with staff to do that is probably best done after uh we the the election cycle when because we're almost there i mean i don't know i mean it's up to you it's up to you guys if you want

to do it but before um all of us but corey did that first one and so um i i would love that i've been wanting to see what i'm you know what your styles would be even though i can figure it out it's pretty pretty obvious but um anyway let's keep talking about it and figure out what we want to do in the near term to make sure that we're all aware what i'm hearing is that the professional development is there's an element of professional development around um how to govern there's an element around professional development of who we are as a team right and knowing each other because we're effective when we're a team we may not all agree on the vote but how we effectively work together to move things forward on behalf

of kids is really critical and needed professional development and then there's this professional development of sometimes of key concepts or aspects of the work whether it's equity or something else that we have to dive in and so those may be three pillars to start to to for you to think about um and you know like carla said we can have facilitators for that or you could also divide some of that up you know um you know based on some of your passions and expertise as well to say well i'll take this thread and i'll lead the group through this conversation or you know i would benefit from a facilitator so that we can just focus in on being participants yeah thank you that resonates with what i heard okay any other last comments or reflections

on tonight um from members of the board of thoughts that are created to you that you didn't get to share anything like that i'm excited yeah me too and i wanna i wanna thank again all of the staff uh that just support us so incredibly well and make it look easy and give us you know they work really hard behind the scenes to get these power points together and to do this work so that we're ready to have a conversation so superintendent um thank you again and thank you to all the team because i'm just constantly impressed with the level of work that you guys produce and to build on what bombard just said i feel really good about the conversation we just had and i hope that staff and you all don't feel like

we're just here stirring up more work for you i hope you hear us expressing like our real genuine interest in getting better and being more effective as a team and so i hope that we struck the right balance between creating more for you all to do and really our genuine expression of wanting to keep getting better all right any other team none i'll see you all on thursday night we're turning
