[Applause] [Music] Good evening everyone. Everyone, thank you so much for being here tonight. I'm Laura Stone and I am chair of the Dartmouth Education Foundation. We were last together for a bee in the fall of 2019. So, we're so happy to be back together in person after the impact of COVID. The Dartmouth Educ Education Foundation was established in 2007 to help supplement teaching, learning, and innovation. And at a time when Dartmouth was facing education budget cuts, a group of parents and community members founded the organization to put resources back into the classroom. So it's been about 15 years and we're really proud of what we have been able to fund in Dartmouth. The DEF is an endowed fund of the community foundation, the Southeastern uh community foundation, and we appreciate the support that they lend

to us. So, in September of this past year, we awarded nearly $12,000 to teachers in the Dartmouth public schools, many of whom are uh uh going to go come on stage tonight or be represented. Uh we do that from elementary to high school and every year the spelling bee fundraising goes directly back into funding many grants for teachers to improve learning in Dartmouth. And the next grant cycle will open on the 1st of April. So, I have some quick thank yous and some introductions before we get started. I want to thank my fellow Dartmouth Education Foundation Advisory Council members. Rachel Cherrier, uh, if you could just wave, Dr. Rambala, Dr. Shannon Jenkins, Dr. Carol Kapotus, Chris Pereira, Christina Rebello, Enid Silva, Dr. Janna Souza, Mary Wait, uh, who's a little bit ill tonight, Meredith Wilkinson,

Dr. Steven Witzig and I just cannot uh be introducing our board u without introducing the founding board member John Bogard who is here tonight competing on a spelling B team. Uh so I want to thank our flight sponsors and team sponsors and all the donors tonight. You can read all about them and their amazing uh support of our work uh in your program. flights are sponsored, our teams are sponsored, and we're very, very grateful for that. Um, I want to also uh acknowledge that the poster and some of the donations are also noted on the poster as you walk out tonight. So, you can um be sure to check that out as well. And then, of course, I want to thank Dartmouth High School for hosting us tonight. So, I know that Dr. Bonnie Gford,

our superintendent, is on a team. if she could raise her hand. And also, uh, Mike Martin is here, who is assistant principal of Dartmouth High School and has been amazing helping us get ready tonight. So, we are very grateful for the hosting and our ability to be here, uh, and and have this site to do this work. So, we will be awarding prizes again this year. If you came just for the prizes, they will be back. Um, and if you didn't receive a ticket or a piece small scrap of paper as you were uh coming in, we still have some Dartmouth High School or Dartmouth Middle School Honor Society volunteers collecting them and they're in here. It's not too late. If you didn't do that, you can still do it now and anyone can put

their name in. Um, so be sure you do that. At the very end of the night, you have to be present to win the prize. We will be awarding two Bruins tickets. So, I hope you'll stick around for that. And um I want to also acknowledge uh our judges tonight. So we have three judges. Starting on the end, we have um David Titlebomb who is a member of the Dartmouth Select Board. David, just raise your hand. Um we have Jim Story here on this end uh deputy chief of uh Dartmouth PD. And we have Dr. Cynthia Marland, a retired director of our DCTV media for the town of Dartmouth who's in our midst tonight. And finally, I want to introduce Dr. Steven Witzig, who is a member of our Dartmouth Education Foundation Advisory Council, and

he is so gracious to be willing tonight to be our announcer, and we're grateful to him for for doing that. So, um, before Steven comes up and we get this shindig started, I do want to, um, allow, uh, Harmonics to come out and it is my pleasure to introduce them. They are there are members of harmonics here tonight and they are Dartmouth High School's amazing ac cappella group and they are going to be singing our national anthem. Oh, say can you see by the dawn early light so proudly we held at the twilight last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight for the ramp. And parts we watched were so gallently streaming. And the rockets red glare. The bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was

still there. Oh, say does that star spangled banner and way [Music] for the land of the free and the home of the brave. So, I'll invite Stephen to come up and join us and we'll get this party started. Thank you. All right, welcome everyone. So, the teams have all been schooled in the cafeteria about the rules, but there may be audience members that might not know what we're doing tonight. So, to start, I want to remind everyone to silence your cell phones. And I did hear some rumblings about whether or not you can have cell phones up on the stage and you cannot. So please do not. This team here in particular was asking that question. So don't bring your cell phones up onto the stage. It's all it all needs to come from here.

Um reminder that there's going to be prizes awarded to those in attendance between the flights. Uh and you must be present to win. All right. So here are the rules. This is a team competition. Each team consists of three members. Between four and five teams will compete at a time in what we call flights. The team members will work together to puzzle out the spelling of each word. Each team will have a dry erase board which with which to write and review its spelling and which to show the answer. The competing teams will have 30 seconds to write an answer on their individual dry erase boards. All teams will show their answers at the end of the Jeopardy jingle or when I call time. When time is up and the answers are displayed, I will

give the correct answer and our judges will determine which teams are correct and which teams are incorrect. The teams you'll know if you're if you're incorrect and just you'll just have to be on our system, but we've got some judges here that are going to be watching you. All right. We use the first spelling in the Miriam Webster's online dictionary as the correct answer. Should a team give an incorrect answer, it will lower you will lower flag. When a team subsequently gives a second incorrect answer, it will lower its second flag and turn over the placard. The team is out of the competition, but will remain on the stage for the duration of the flight. The single winner of each flight, the last team with a flag still up will go on to the final

competition. There will be five flights and five winners will be competing in the finals. In the championship round, the competition will be double elimination. A team must spell the final word correctly to win. If the final teams all misspel their final word, another word will be given until there's only one team that has spelled the word correctly, and that team will become the champion, and they will take home the trophy for the year and have their name engraved onto that trophy.
