001call this meeting to order roll call the so that all five board members are present I to student representatives Megan Jacobs is excused as she's competing in a tennis tournament at this time I would invite you to stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance [Music] right at this time I would like to I would like to introduce mr. Tom - Berg who will then introduce his staff and and the representatives from the Rose Bowl who are joining us from Pasadena or will introduce staff first associate director Liz Parsons is here Tammy right from Berg our color guard instructor is here Bob Trammell our percussion instructors here and Marcus Roble our visual instructor is here and we are pleased to welcome to Greendale for three days or so they spent the day with the

002students today and it was outstanding from Pasadena and from the Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber and her husband and also Tournament of Roses volunteer tomas lopez so without further ado we'll bring up miss Farber things town it's a pleasure to be with you thank you for inviting us and we're so happy to be here at this time it has been such an amazing trip so far and we have much more in store which includes our official presentation of the banner which is how we officially invite the Greendale high school band I wanted to let you know how impressive this program is this staff that you have the community that you have and the band and the way we know that is we received over a hundred applications to march in this parade and we

003have bands that are perennially in the parade and then we have a committee as well as Tomas and I that pick the remaining bands and we picked 16 bands and that includes bands from all over the world including the United States as well as other countries and Greendale high school marching band was one of those 16 which is incredibly incredibly impressive and I have to tell you that you know the thresholds even consider the band's is incredible musicianship and talent technical ability and they have to submit a video 18 months ahead which shows among other things this strange turn I say strange because it's not a 90 degree angle it's a little different on the parade route so we got that video but for us it was more than just being able to technically do

004the things that they do extremely well it was the story and the story is this is an amazing community it's got the history history historic aspect but also a small school relatively small nine hundred and twenty kids and 200 of them are in the band and they don't have to audition to be in the band you talk about special that is incredible and what they've accomplished the quality the different competitions they've gone to the state competition having marched and the Macy's parade and everything that's been done just was so incredibly impressive to us it was it was a no-brainer frankly it was so easy to choose this band and we are so proud to be here were honored to be here among all of you we had a chance to visit with the students today

005the leaders first we had a small session with the leaders and then we had a complete sort of plenary session with the entire band which is one of the most important things from our perspective that we do we visit all of the bands the 16 bands that have been selected and just to give you a flavor we have a band from the largest number of international bands University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez u.s. territory we have a band from Costa Rica from Mexico from El Salvador we have an all-female marching band from Denmark and we have a composite band from Japan because of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics we have Southern University the human jukebox and HBCU and we have bands from New York Oklahoma Tennessee Texas a couple of local bands and Hawaii and this band

006is not only elite and one of the best in the world but they're going to perform on the largest international platform that exists and yes we believe we're the best parade in the world by the way but they will get that opportunity and not only will they get that opportunity to show off what they do but Greendale Wisconsin is gonna be on the map now people are gonna know where Greendale is because this band is gonna represent Wisconsin the state of Wisconsin in this parade and we will also have two University bands but those don't get picked until we pick our teams that are playing in the Rose Bowl game and that happens the weekend after Thanksgiving when the Big Ten championship and the pac-12 championships are played and the decisions are made with the

007CFP etc now I've said this before I'm not trying to jinx anything but there's also this little opportunity that maybe the Badgers would play in our Rose Bowl game which could you imagine how many people from Wisconsin would be at this event should that happen regardless though Wisconsin will be so well represented and we wanted to share that with you as well as the quality staff that you have you need to know the gem that you have in Tom Rothenberg I mean I'm sure you know this but I'm going to say it again I want it to be in the record officially what an amazing band director and the staff that he has also incredible dedication the way that they've designed the program which I'm so excited when he when he shared with me what

008they were doing and I just said this is this is amazing to me a focus on roses do they know the title is it I mean okay well anyway I I we got very very excited and we saw the the uniform and everything that had been planned obviously the quality and everything else but I want you to know and I don't know how often you hear it how special the program is here and we want to encourage you to continue to support this kind of a program because the chance that these students is going to are going to have to come to this parade the hundred and thirty first parade Rose Parade we started in 1890 we've been doing it for a while we believe will be a life-changing opportunity they are going to be

009able to tell their kids and their grandkids that they marched in this parade and as we travel we meet people from all over the world that share those stories with us we remember when we marched in the parade 20 30 40 years ago however many years ago it's a memory that is etched in in here and in here because it is that special they're going to meet kids from all over the world they're gonna perform at band fest we have an opportunity for all our bands to do a field show which is clearly something that they feel very comfortable doing and they're performing in the afternoon session on December 30th at Pasadena City College that is the session to attend they will perform with the Japan band and they will also perform with Southern University

010so the cream of the cream of the cream is going to be there and we are so impressed so honored and so proud to be here visiting them and we visit all the bands because we want to help them they are selected 18 months they have to apply before the parade and they're selected shortly after that so that they have time to fundraise they have time to do all the logistical planning that is entailed when you are thinking about getting 200 students and chaperones to Pasadena you need to get them there you need to make sure they have a place to stay they have transportation they can get their equipment there they have uniforms they have food all the things that that come with require so much organization so much planning and so much support

011we are incredibly impressed with your community you have parents that are passionate that are here that are helping you have incredible faculty you have staff you have all of you and people in the business world and others that see this and say this is special this is incredible so we want to commend you we want to thank you for the support and we are here to make sure the word gets out we had an interview this morning with media we will continue to do that as much as we can we have our own social media where we promote this band and have been promoting this band everywhere we go we talked about the Greendale marching band so other venues have heard about this and this band and they follow on the social media because we

012follow everyone and we share that information so the students will know ahead of time who they're going to meet and a little bit about the experiences that they're about to have and they don't know until they go the other thing that was important to us is having a lot of first time bands and this year we have mostly first-time bands we have some returning which you want to have a balance but the first time bands for us was really important because once you've had this opportunity and this experience it is it is so life-changing and so incredible that it really opens doors and as you all know music is incredibly important in terms of not only building character but the studies that have been shown that link music with math and science and it's the

013universal language so when they meet those kids from Japan and other bands they don't need to speak the same language because they already do and that's music and that's what you have with your support provided to this incredible band and to this incredible place in this incredible community so Tomas and I are so grateful and so thankful for your support and for everything that you've done and the experience that these kids are about to have and their families because we understand there's quite a few folks that will be coming as well to see this and to witness this I also want to mention that this will have this band will march in front of 800,000 people that show up in person to see the parade and we've told them 45.5 miles you will not see

014a single gap on that route and they are there for you and to cheer you on and to support you every step of the way which we think will be a unique experience we don't think they've had that so far also 35 million people will be seeing this parade throughout the world and via the internet we also have Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon doing their satire Funny or Die broadcasts which by the way won a Daytime Emmy for the Rose Parade coverage believe it or not we're very proud of that so this will be seen all over the place incredible demographic that will visualize that will see this and as I mentioned Greendale will be on the map for certain after this parade and this broadcast is completed we have something new that has been

015started one of our local broadcasters has started band cam band cam will be a camera that focuses exclusively on the bands and so there will be a place and we will share that information with Tom so he can communicate this to the community where families and others can go and see just the bands and then even cut and paste Greendale and be able to see how they marched around that corner which is where the broadcasts all take place and so that we're very proud of that we're proud of everything that is happening the innovations and things that we're doing but also to have such an amazing talented wonderful vibrant Community Supported band we want to thank you for the opportunity to be here and to share our excitement our passion and our thanks to all

016of you to everyone here for supporting the Greendale high school marching band and for recognizing the achievement which in our view is the pinnacle and that is to march in the Rose Parade and they'll March in the hundred and thirty first Rose parade as well as we will have 106 Rose Bowl game and you know we look forward to hopefully seeing all of you there and whether you can't come in person or not whether you can come in person or not we know you'll be there virtually and now we've given you more information and we'll continue to give you other information so you can be there in person or virtually to support this amazing achievement the president gets to do one thing that nobody can veto actually two things but this is one of them

017and that is to pick a theme and this year's theme is the power of hope and at a time where our country and our world is so divided we thought it was appropriate to have a theme that recognizes the importance of hope and how hope can bring everybody together and America's New Year celebration is designed to do just that and so with the idea of hope and the hope that this band brings to all of us for our future when we look at them and we see what they have accomplished and will continue to accomplish it really warms our hearts and makes us so thankful and appreciative so I'd like to make sure that you all get one of our themed pins so we brought some for you that we're going to hand out and

018I want you to know the reason the pin is round in the past they've been square or rectangle shape is because hope is never-ending and continuous and we want you to wear it proudly whether it's today or definitely on January 1 because we think it's that important and that special and this community and this band epitomizes hope for us so thank you so much that's all I have at this point I appreciate it thank you very much for coming to Greendale these last couple of days Greendale has a community that supports the fine arts whether it's the band or the theater or the orchestra or the choir the Greendale communities really supports the fine arts and and I think the marching van is is really a leader in everything that we do here the thing

019that I think is excellent about Tom and his team is we never said it rest on our laurels I mean ten short years ago we weren't going to Indianapolis for the bands of America we weren't competing outside of Wisconsin we weren't competing in or we weren't performing in Pasadena or New York City so incremental e we continue to get better and better and challenge ourselves and and I think that's a real testament for it for the overall program so thank you Tom and team may I give you pins please oh you can leave them with Maryann Jacobsen she'll make sure that we get them at the end and thank you again for coming to Greendale all right we will continue with our agenda and next we will be hearing a segment on the Panther pride

020with a team from the Greendale high school to talk a little bit about project-based learning that's happening here at the high school so Steve if you and April or May and Jessi contacted me in such an excited state I moved it up to tonight and they're gonna a really cool project that they did recently and you hear a little bit more about what's going on in that program so the show is I have to start and say I got to have these two lovely young ladies as ninth graders in PBS and now we get them in the capstone course it's been just a fantastic experience to watch their their growth and as a group so you're about to see one of the project that the eye biomedical innovation does in the Project Lead the Way

021capstone the Palmer course it's one of the first thing was that students do when they come into the class because it's such a dynamic cooperative learning and very authentic for them to get the experience to try and design some something somewhere according to the demographic before they choose to design an emergency department but just a little bit of background students in the came in they brainstormed the top biomedical innovations in the last century and in the channel the medical and healthcare industry face currently we investigated and practice and and they had to triage them as emergent urges or non-urgent and then we added another little piece of ranking the order in which they would have triaged and seen the patients that they've always came into emergency room at the same time it really allowed students

022to connect with each other not have not be faced with something they had a right answer but an answer that they had to kind of defend and it gave teams a little little taste of what it's like to have that independence of working as a team and then kind of presenting to one another so within the district the gold-standard PBL has five project design elements and I just wanted a little outline of how these are accomplished in our emergency project so students were able to analyze current inefficiencies within our healthcare system and how patients are seen so they were kind of thrust in if you will but some of the inefficiency that exists the way that health care professionals have said this these are our challenges and these are the challenges what could we do

023what kind of innovations can we do what would our emergency department look like and Maryanne and the district office printed those in color for you guys there and you can head to see Aaron and Lauren's design what they did and they'll talk about that later on but that was their mission their mission was to develop something that they thought would be able to enhance patient care the project uses background information from all four of the project laid awake courses so students are thinking all the way back when the head Anna Garcia a type 1 diabetic all the way through things that they did in human body systems and medical intervention the project itself they're solving a real issue the healthcare setting and they're gonna face these challenges and they're hopefully gonna be part of the

024implementation of new innovations this experience throughout the pretty much most of Terminal one ok there was a lot of how much and my two individuals are presenting today my two are two individuals um they Hannah came to me at one point were like we're doing so much research what's that end that end project what's that end point what should we truly get to so we talked a little bit on what that looks like we've done so much then what it could be now I now we can just dive in now now I got it they were able to reflect along the way I get to be that facilitator in this process it's truly me going around and touching base with each group why are you doing what you're doing why is this emergency room so

025beneficial to this specific demographic of the city that you picked and you know here about what Lauren and some of the last to our students are presenting to themselves but along the way they're providing a peer evaluation as well as assessing in their own end product with the rubric that they were given in the beginning as well as then critiquing each other who prays in Polish so what did people do really well in this and kind of constructive criticism like hey when you were doing this you're reading off that slide you know there's other things that you could have done in the presentation of what you develop and then lastly while they were presenting the students just decided that they were like you know it's not part of the rubric message but I think we

026shall like dress up and it's spirit week so is it okay that we have some of the like you know like black marks is we have powder puffs but like we'll still dress up we'll go change and and look a little bit more formal so they did that and they present it to each other and other teachers last year maybe was a little bit more intimidating for some of the students when I had mr. Paul upstairs mr. Lourdes and dr. kilts are there any way this is real right but that ability to then present to the public and not just each other part of having some of the teachers with us that had third our property that they were able to present so in general I mean and I think that it's a you'll see

027as well as the girls are presenting young ladies just how beneficial this whole process can be but when done in a project so our hospital is called Pikes Peak area hospital and it was designed by Lauren and myself okay so the location of our hospital is in Colorado Springs Colorado obviously because of the Pikes Peak name and so they pretty have the population is pretty much the size of Milwaukee I would say and then in the nearby vicinity you do have the Air Force Academy in the Olympic Training Center so in the need be of an emergency and they wouldn't be able to go to their own facility they could come to ours and so our main focuses of this area was the hiking and skiing related injuries because of the mountain ranges and then

028War veterans because of like PTSD in people in the surrounding areas coming from and working at the Air Force Academy and then drug overdosing so this is the whole emergency room layout it took us a little while to come up with a final set up because we wanted to make sure that we address some of the issues that current hospitals have so our trauma level we said our trauma level was a trauma level too because we got to decide like what would be the best for our area and so as you can see our trauma level is a fully staffed area at all times 24/7 and it's somewhat we wanted somewhat separate away from the main area in case like obviously something because it's not a trauma area and anything could happen we didn't want

029you know like young families to see anything bad that could happen so to label our Hospital - trauma level - we needed to make sure that there was 24-hour coverage patients could be seen by specialized surgeons like cardiologists Pediatrics R er was mainly meant to handle trauma so our walk-in area main entrance area of the desk obviously like I said before it's separate away from the trauma area and we do have a daycare that is fully staffed so that can be used for anyone like in a need be like in in any scenario that daycares staff and can house like any kids in case of their parents being treated or any other family members and then we do have a pharmacy there on the way out so if you were treated and then on your

030way out you could pick up any medication that you were prescribed and then we have a we decided that to put a blood donation center in that area which normally not a lot of emergency rooms have what this would be if you wanted to donate you could donate blood there and this is our operating room area so we have separate ORS based on best specific cases and so we have two orthopaedic based a warrants because of the amount of injuries in the area coming off the mountains and stuff then we have a maternity or in case he's come in and they need be operated on as well as two cardio cardio operating rooms so then our radiology and psych ward we wanted to have two different radiology areas one for trauma and just one regular

031just in case like if there was a wait for a regular radiology and a trauma came in that needed to be have like a CT or an MRI they could mean they immediately be seen and then we wanted to make sure we had a bigger psych ward because of the PTSD patients and the war veterans that they could be seen and then right across from some of the ORS we have exam rooms that are connected to [Music] okay so the exam rooms are connected to where the alarms are as well as where the beds are where people would go from the waiting room to see a bed so nurses and doctors could come see them and then there's like an exam room for general cases maternity and pediatric cases cardiology cases and orthopedic um rooms

032and we wanted to make sure that there weren't just like random rooms they wanted to be specific so that the supplies in those rooms is catered toward the patients that would be entering so then kind of like our rooms that are miscellaneous rooms so we do have a social services room near the near the entrance and then we do have an isolation room that has its own storage so this would be if someone was like hiv-positive and needed to be away from any other patients that would be in like the normal bed area and then we do have a conference room just for like any meetings that need to be happen and then a break room for the on-call doctors okay so for this project we needed to take a patient through our ER and

033show how they would be treated at our Hospital so our first patient her name is Hayley she was pinned in a motor vehicle accident and she had like a piece of metal in her chest she was having a lot of trouble breathing obviously so she was stabilized at the scene she had an oxygen mask in fluids I'm she was shocked twice by a defibrillator and she get a lot of blood loss okay so she entered our Hospital through a medevac that we had on top of the roof of the hospital and then we immediately treated her into the trauma care room then we obviously had a cardiologists orthopedic and general surgeon immediately seen her and then it treated her in the trauma room and then immediately taken to the O R we thought that there

034wouldn't be enough time for any scans to be done because she was having trouble breathing and she could obviously stop breathing if in the middle of a scan and then we said because of our trauma level that the patient had too much blood loss and did not make it out of the surgery while the surgeons did perform CPR for over 30 minutes in which she was shot multiple times none of the other groups in our class had a patient die but we thought it was we thought it might be important to share a case where someone doesn't make it because your hospital can be the best designed hospital for your area and people are still going to die it's just a reality so we just wanted to highlight that okay so we had to then

035figure out the staffing for ER so on-site we had 25 registered nurses for in each 24-hour period 18 full-time emergency medicine physicians one surgeon for each specialty on called for 24 hours and then 15 CAS on duty during the 24 hours two radiologists on-site and two on call and then for critical care techs on site for our project we also had to come up with an innovation to help improve our Hospital so what we had was medical cart robots one of the issues that we were presented with was a card set or moved from room to room are really heavy and really bulky and they can get in the way so we had a robot that could move itself and it would be able to house all of this stuff needed to take it into

036a trauma room or an exam room and there will be locks on the doors that could be open with key cards and they wouldn't require physical force to move and they would be programmed to stay close to the wall so they wouldn't be in the way of anything kind of like a Roomba doesn't run into your furniture and stuff and so those are citations from our sources this is just a little touch on on what presented thank you for sharing your your GI right I think it was excellent to be able to see your learnings in the meal to apply those learnings so that's exactly what what we're looking for is you know we look at our strategic plan and talk about project-based learning and how is that implemented and I think the Project Lead

037the Way class is the biomedical engineers strain really lends itself nicely to that so congratulations and thank you for sharing your experience and that was during the summer then the CNE program yeah all right thank you any other questions or comments from it was amazed at the detail that you considered in everything from the layout to the scenarios it's it's amazing I mean it reminded me of a college course which of course Project Lead the Way is on that level but very very impressive thank you thanks for sharing thank you continuing on with the agenda I'm moving along number five any comments or questions this evening so any persons addressing the board are invited to the podium at this time I remind you that you know we welcome anyone who'll be speaking this evening and

038would like to remind you that school board meetings are for the purpose of carrying on the business of the district and their official business meetings held in public and through school board policy 186 the board allows citizens to make comments by scheduling to opportunities on the agenda to receive citizen comments and in accordance with the intent of the open meeting laws please be aware that although the school board welcomes comments from the public it cannot discuss or debate items brought up during public comments in order to hear from all citizens who wish to speak and to ensure the official business of the district is addressed board policy sets a time limit for citizens comments and will be adhering to that policy and it's time limits at tonight's meeting persons wishing to address the board asked

039to come to the podium and state their name and address for the record and comments are limited one time an individual's hooli speaking will be limited to three minutes or five minutes if representing a group of persons thank you I'm representing page and I'm also here on behalf of Shanice Knox and Deana Dianna and Mariette I am glad that we will join together as a community for our alignment event on October 18th and hopefully some strengthening and healing will begin but this would be so much easier if the administration and the school board would acknowledge its own institutionalized racism and bias Shanice Knox would still be a student here at Greendale high school if you had acknowledged that your methods of discipline were wrong and unfounded as described in the book bias chapter 3 page

04062 Jennifer Eberhardt describes a study where people are asked to rate the behavior between black people and white people of the those two on a variety of dimensions Duncan found a striking difference based on race when the person doing the shoving was black and the victim was white 75% of the participants rated the behavior as violent but when the person doing the shoving was white and the victim was black only 17% of the students considered the same behavior violent in fact to 42% of whites who shoved blacks were deemed to be simply playing around but only 6% of blacks who shoved whites were categorized in that benign light Duncan found that the students used a much lower threshold for labeling black actions as violent so when the racist student last year first called Shanice the

041n-word to Shanice and her two friends the counselors and the administration did not protect the three students of color in any meaningful way the vice-principal at the time decided to call the racist girls parents like what the racist girl did was not all that serious or violent she had light-skinned and finally when Shanice who's a student of color verbally defended herself two days later after the same racist girl did it again the police were called on shanise shanise was threatened by one of the officers with arrest she was suspended she missed homecoming she was given the athletic code violation she had to miss to swim meets she did not deserve this for verbally defending herself the administration showed racial bias and their harsh treatment of Shanice who was a victim she was told that she

042was disruptive and therefore she deserved to be suspended in all everything you are still punishing her by leaving the athletic code violation on her record the board showed their bias by not investigating the incident Shanice does not feel safe going to school at Greendale high school and a big part of this is because you all did not protect her you lost a beautiful young student because of the institutionalized racism and biased that exists with you do what you know is right and just fix this within your sphere so that you have more credibility at the alignment on the 18th thank you and as I've mentioned ms Miller in the past we did not comment or discuss student discipline issues at board meetings I would like to state for the record that although the board did

043not perform its own investigation there were numerous both internal and external reviews of the situation any other comments from visitors mirre Grogan Sutton Lane Greendale I can't pass up a chance to address the board I just wanted to echo what the president of the Rose Bowl had to say I was at the Greendale marching band Invitational Saturday night in the rain and the parent volunteers especially with the parking were amazing and then I was also in Franklin and watching the second half of their Invitational and I hadn't seen Greendale show I had I didn't stay long enough Saturday night in the rain but I saw it on Sunday and it was outstanding and in the words of my special ed sister go Greendale you know you're the best thank you for your comments any other

044comments to be shared mr. Kabuto I'm going to take the opportunity just to share our communications as part of public comment so in recognition of Wisconsin school board week the district would like to honor our school board members for their commitment to Greendale students in the community well not the most glamorous elected position as the five of you know the work and commitment of the five of you reflect to focus on students in public education Greendale schools is a phenomenal district and the collective efforts of the five of you are making it even better so I thank you for that I thank you for your leadership your guidance and your passion you all make a difference for Greendale schools its students parents and staff so we hope you enjoy the small token of appreciation that

045we've provided we've gotten all the board members one of the apples from apples of Eden so see that as a token of our appreciation that you're receiving tonight so if we can give the board a round of applause for their work I also want to thank Laura Farber president of the Tournament of Roses for coming tonight and I'm excited with the marching bands participation the twenty20 Tournament of Roses field show and parade I invite the community to come to the last couple of remaining home football games to see the performance that they will do it state nationals and in Pasadena so it's a great show as Mary indicated I also want to thank the high school principal Steve Lotus teacher Jessica hull Spock and seniors Aaron Farley and Lauren costs for sharing their project-based learning

046experience being done it's these types of authentic experiences that excite our students get them into deeper learning opportunities or content subjects career pathways and so we appreciate them sharing that out tonight at one of the previous board meetings a community member requested data related to students who have left the district before graduating from the high school and looking at the data from 2016 to 2019 we had 116 students who were true without earning a diploma representing about five percent of the students enrolled in Greendale High School during the same period 26 students or about 22% moved out of state or the Milwaukee metro area 41 students about 35% moved into another community in the Milwaukee metro area 13 of these students or 11% transferred to an online or homeschool option 8 or 7% transferred to

047a private school in the area if we look at the racial ethnic identity of the hundred and 16 students forty percent of the transfers out were ethnic minority compared to 27% of the Greendale high school population in 2019 if you look at the breakdown of ethnicities Asian transfers were 8.6 percent of the hundred and sixteen our overall high school population was seven percent black transfers were nine point four percent overall high school population was five percent Latino transfers were eighteen point nine percent overall high school population was twelve percent an American Indian Pacific Islander transfers were two point six percent overall high school population was two percent so that provides some of that information related to that community question Greendale schools held a groundbreaking ceremony at the high school on September 24th students saying the

048national anthem shared reasons why the new areas will be important for the school going forward we had construction start at the high school today with fencing going up around the exterior areas of the music wing and gymnasium we also had the risers taken out of the high school choir room this this afternoon so it's amazing how much bigger that room looks with those risers being they were permanent risers taking those out the back of the building near the orchestra room will be closed until the project is completed there'll be a new back entrance for students that will be opened located to the east of the school garden and it will remain open until the end of summer when construction is complete signage will direct students to the new entrance when it is officially in place

049we're waiting for some structural upgrades like work with the pathway sidewalk with some surface work some additional life lighting and then a crosswalk as well before we officially open up then new entrance first students are parking in that back parking lot as well as visitors who come to different competitions or shows veterans memorial dedication was held on October 5th at the site on Broad Street in South Way thanks to the Greendale high school choir for performing the national anthem the district is also working with the veterans to develop the educational material that will be viewed on the kiosk we had representatives from the Veterans Association meet with Miss Mobley's Warren conflict students to provide the framework for what they'd like to see and our students will then do research create the multimedia presentations that will

050then tell the stories of our veterans through that kiosk so we're excited with that work on September 17th we had 6th graders from Infotech explorobots these are small robots that they're able to code using marker color patterns so they worked in groups of two or three to troubleshoot collaborate figure out how to write the codes properly for the robot to read in 4th grade at Highland View school we had a guest geologist from UWM visit talked about rocks and minerals for their earth science units students learned about different types of rocks special properties of minerals and saw demonstration on what happens to the mineral calcite what it interacts with acid so I guess that was pretty exciting to see state marching band competition will be held on Saturday October 19th in whitewater members of the

051Community Coalition for diversity equity and inclusion steering committee continue to plan for a community-wide event scheduled over two evenings October 18th from 5:30 to 8:30 and October 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 in the high school NP R we will serve dinner from 5:00 to 5:30 for participants who are coming as well and we also have day care provided for parents who want to participate and are concerned with having little ones who may need some supervision so we'll have that day care provided through our Park and Rec program purpose of this two night event is to share a draft plan of action around equity and inclusion for the community receive feedback from participants and then celebrate the strength of Greendale through our diversity so the board and community will hear a little bit more about this

052a plan of action and tonight's agenda a little bit later finally a couple of other things eighth grade students leave for Washington DC on October 25th they're buying the old trip and then there will be no school on October 24th and 25th thank you dr. kilts moving along the agenda looking for a motion to approve them board meeting minutes from September 9th and September 16th I move approval of the regular board meeting minutes from September 9 to 2019 and September 16 2019 and the closed session minutes of September 16th 2019 I second there's been a motion a second to approve the board meeting minutes as outlined agenda item six any further discussion they look for a roll call vote yes yes yes yes and I'm yes motion carries continuing on personnel so there is a

053motion to approve an on renewing teacher appointment so at this time because it is late in the it's after the school year started it is a non renewing contract for an additional reading teacher at Highland View Elementary anything more right then looking for a motion to approve or any discussion so it's from from what I was told he's related to more help that Highland View needed what about the other two elementary schools so looking at specifically designed specially designed instruction and the number and minutes required at the other schools we have enough staffing to be able to cover that Highland View was the one school where as we were taking a look at some of the new students who have entered that school and the increase in especially designed instruction there was a need for

054an additional position to help with that and through the reading specialist reading support there that's the area where the greatest need has been with the students coming in so the decision was made to go with someone who has that reading background great that they're getting the support and then Jonathan or dr. kelso Jonathan how does this impact the budget so is this budgeted for what you know we will approve a final budget later in October so just curious it will we find we reallocate money or what will be the impact of the overall budget do you see yeah so there'll be a combination so there are some services that we based on individual student needs may be eliminating from our special education budgets so mr. Lemke and I are taking a look at that in

055addition because some of the students that have come in have significant individual needs we're also going to be requesting through the transfer of service program which is a way to get a revenue limit exemption through the DPI we've requested additional funds be added to our revenue limit because of specific individual needs from students who came in with an individual education plan to accommodate those services so in alignment with this type of additional add at Island View thank you any other questions if not I'm looking for a motion to approve this a non renewing contract I move approval of the non renewing teacher contract or appointment I should say as outlined in the agenda item 7 second there's been a motion a second to approve agenda item 7 the non renewing teacher appointment any for the

056discussion then I call for a roll call vote yes yes yes yes I am yes motion carries continuing on then agenda item 8 we're here to hear an update on the Coalition for equity diversity and inclusion here in Greendale and I'm excited with the work that's been done around the draft plan of action that the Sirian committee has put together for the coalition in the executive summary you have a list of the participants who have been on that steering committee so it's a great and diverse group from our community and I think the plan that they're bringing forward represents some tremendous steps that we can take across our community in our school fools with our businesses with our library Park and Rec as well as just with some of our community celebrations to welcome new

057families into our community and show our appreciation for the diversity we do have what the steering committee did is based upon if you remember back in May we had a community conversation and during that community conversation look it looked at both strengths as well as opportunities for improvement and needs that we have and based upon those opportunities for improvement the steering committee took a look at that and created really four pathways to that appreciation creating a more welcoming appreciative inclusive community in Greendale with the first one of those areas being around really the first goal implementing education on diversity equity and inclusion so these would be opportunities that would happen within the community so some of these would happen through page in partnership with Park and Recreation and the public library in order to provide

058some educational opportunities for our community members and citizens we also as were taking a look at some of our key publications like life in the village we want to make sure that the articles were put in in there certainly represent the diversity we have in our community so looking at ways that we can spotlight some of those cultural stories some of those stories of ethnicity and diversity within our own community as well we also want to make sure that we're embracing our own history and as you know Greendale was originally set up as a federal works program and when you looked at some of the conditions to move into the community you need it to be middle-class you need it to be married you need it to be white and so even embracing that and

059understanding not only in Greendale but across the Milwaukee metropolitan area some of the history of marginalization segregation that occurred through redlining and so looking at someone like Reggie Jackson who really is a historian expert in this area to come in and provide some of that just to broaden our knowledge of why we are we're rare today with the Milwaukee metropolitan area we also as part of the plan related to goal one talked about continuing to work with the Southern Poverty Law Center and doing the responding to hate training that we did with teachers looking for ways that we can provide that opportunity for our parents so we've built that into our parents as partners network so that workshop will be happening and we want to make sure that our students especially our student leaders also

060have that background and knowledge so that they can respond to it in the hallway and then finally looking at some parent communication guides building that into what we provide with parents through orientations or through different newsletters that go out from our schools and just the understanding around some of the hurtful words hate speech that we want parents to certainly discourage with their students moving forward from an educational standpoint in our schools we want to make sure that we're sending a strong message in our schools around responding to hate risk racism and bias in our schools so holding a yearly assembly and every school really dedicated to fighting racism in our schools and community and and working with some community partners some speakers to come in and conduct those assemblies so we're hoping we can do

061that this year in second semester and have a keynote speaker come in who can do that across all levels and deliver that message in in an appropriate way for our students that racism has no place here in our schools finally tracking student climate through a yearly student perception so similar to what we've been doing with our perception survey through Studer continuing to look at that and if we need to build in some additional questions that capture some of this we certainly will look at that the second goal is around putting effective policies and processes that support our vision in place so looking at some of the items that you're going to see here as a school board we took a look tonight at a policy related to a relationship with school liaison officers we made

062some revisions to that that draft is going to go to the steering committee of the coalition we're going to get feedback from them it'll go back to the policy committee for some final drafts before coming to the full board for consideration probably in December we're also looking at working with the village around a collaborative resolution or policy related to equity as well so the steering committee for the Coalition is going to look at drafting their resolution drafting that equity policy and then bringing forward some recommendations to the policy committee and the board related to that as well so I'll stop there and see are there any questions comments regarding the first two goals that have been drafted by the steering committee first I want to say how impressed I am with the thorough approach of

063everything obviously you're going to continue to address the topics including something as great as artwork I'm wondering what kind of follow up there can be to the all school assemblies something that can be a bit more ongoing yeah and I think what you're going to see at the middle school in high school and I'm glad we have some of the administrative team from the high school middle school here we are implementing for the first year the source of strength curriculum and program and I think it's part of the ongoing educational campaigns that those peer champions will will be putting on they can continue to come back to the messages that are shared at that assembly so I'm going Steve or Emily mark any thoughts related to how that presentation assembly could connect to some of

064those SOS educational opportunities sorry to put you on the spot but to figure out what that kind of lashes how to make it any other comments or questions with funding I noticed a few things under the steering committee now I know that in the budget that we're gonna look at on a 28th there is money in there for equity and inclusion is that reflected here or is this in addition to what's already been budgeted so when when the community took action at the annual meeting part of that fund ad budget had built in dollars to support the coalition and the village is also dedicating some dollars to support the coalition so they'll have from the district we budgeted in twenty five thousand dollars and the village according to my conversation with Todd Michaels is looking

065at additional ten thousand dollars so in order to carry out these projects we'll have about thirty five thousand dollars where the Coalition and the steering committee can make sure that we can actually take these two actions so I think it it's covered in all three okay okay so and I was just going to comment that what I really like about this plan is the comprehensive nature about it as well as how dr. Kiehl it's you and the schools are taking a leadership role but you're also engaging with the village so you see the park in rec you see the library you talk a little bit about Reggie Jackson's presentation perhaps even the Historical Society might have an interest in partnering with us there so that you know we can continue to broaden the the ally

066is that I part of the solution completely agree with you so I appreciate you pointing that out as well and just engagement just off of what Joe was saying I'd also encourage if you can talk with some of the community groups like the Lions and the Gea and see if they might have someone who would be interested in being part of the committee okay great even funding there's additional funding or not I just had a question regarding the how the board will pass formal resolution against racism and it's it's earmark for December of 2019 will that be something that goes before the policy committee first or is it just gonna come before the whole board I think a resolution it depends on how the board may like to proceed with it the idea would be

067that the the Coalition steering committee would actually draft something that could be universally used across the village board as well as the district board if the board would like the policy committee to have some eyes on that beforehand we could get that to the policy committee at their early November meeting bring it forward to the board here and later November for discussion and take action on it one of the meetings at the early meeting in December it's sort of the timeline around that and then very quickly the policy when police officers are called or when they contact anyone under age 18 what what's the follow-up on that so in terms of the follow-up related to the policy so at this point like I said the policy committee had a chance to see it tonight provide

068some revisions the next step with that will be to take it to the coalition steering committee for feedback and then we're going to take it back to the policy committee in November okay and then have them look at that feedback make revisions that then would be drafted and brought forward to the full board probably around the same timeline great that you're getting that input thank you around goal number three goal number three is really around community educator or community celebrations and recognition so looking at ways to take advantage of some of the community celebrations we already have like hay days village days the farmers market umbrella building in some cultural educational experiences there with different community groups we've also talked about a Welcome Wagon so for members who are new to the community new residents

069I know Greendale used to do this I believe those through the chamber so the village is willing to take that up and provide sort of a welcome care package to those new residents looking at the library and Park and Rec doing a community book study I think they've done that for our youth where the public libraries has supported something like that in the summer but what we'd like to do is find some sort of team or youth book that would also be engaging for adults so that we can get our schools as well as community members involved in that jackie is also already seeking outs and working with a team from the steering committee on a diversity speaker series that would be held at the CLC and trying to do something on a quarterly basis

070related to that and then looking at ways that we could expand the international festivals in our schools I know that the student equity team here at the high school is looking at some sort of cultural festival but even how can we build on what Highland View and College Park to around some of the I know it have Highland View they call it all the world and so continuing to do that and foster that come across our schools on across our community a new student welcome initiative students started that this year with mark and Judy taking the lead on that and I think that will continue to grow and then looking at monthly cultural emphasis around different heritage months and so I know that Steve and the administrative team at the high school already with Hispanic

071Heritage Month this month are doing some things and have some educational postings up at the high school so continuing to build off of some of that movie and then the final one is really taking a look at community education and building cultural competence so one of the ways we want to do that is julie has already reached out to Alverno UWM and Parkside and we're setting up meetings with their schools of Education to look at getting student teachers here student teachers who are minority in particular and trying to build relationships so that is we have positions open we can not only take a look at them as student teachers get to know them as teachers and help with some of the instructional practices then make three-needle the exceptional schools that we that they are look

072at the possibility then of hiring them for the positions that we may have open so that we've got a deeper pool of candidates who come from minority backgrounds so those three schools tend to have a little higher percentage of students who are minority so we're hoping that that may lead to more candidates within our pipeline more student teachers who come from different cultural experiences and backgrounds we also talked about having a village youth council so similar to what the City of Milwaukee has with the Youth Council Todd and I are going to work together on identifying students from diverse backgrounds who could even provide some recommendations advisement around different policies and procedures and Todd and I would co-lead some of that work and then also take a look at how we could build their experiences

073their knowledge into some of the cultural education opportunities as well and as leaders hopefully take on some of this work and then around some of the art work hopefully looking at artists and residents type program to build some cultural competence through art platforms whether it's through music performance visual arts providing those opportunities for students and multiple levels to have an arts education experience so we're hoping we can build that out and then the final page is looking at ways that we can promote multilingualism so looking at the way we can build our libraries to have multilingual books as well as making sure that through our village and district materials that we have multilingual other documents and multiple languages so that as we have more and more families that are coming from backgrounds where English isn't

074their primary language that they're feeling comfortable and have a sense of of what we're asking them to provide through material that's in their language so any questions thoughts about the final two calls so I was just wondering with the new student welcome initiatives I was hoping to hear from maybe Emma and since mark is here how you feel that's gone so far this year and any thoughts on changes or improvements to that last year and wanted to put together this mentorship program we really started small the summer with freshman warm update on where we revitalized that was brought back he had a year off where we didn't have any any we did we had very little interest so this year I think we have 46 right around there and we had six different teams of

075student leaders that are part of that group doesn't help take our freshman around and answer questions that way they from that want to continue that throughout the school year one of the ideas they had was that if guidance or teachers are findings to these that are either new to the district or just new freshmen that are struggling socially to find that connection they want to be a subgroup that would potentially reach out to them whether it's as simple as having a lunch with them or whatnot but that's one thing that they want to look into and then he mentioned the cultural activities that they want to do so it's it's a we're we don't want to get ahead of ourselves so we're not only a few of our student leaders we want to grow it

076[Music] focus on students meeting this not us saying hey put this together the final item I'll share is we have in the packet the flyer that's been put together for the Greendale welcomes diversity event that we're doing October 18th and 21st these been posted around the community including in several businesses we certainly encourage any and all community members to come participate in the event and give us some feedback on the plan that I shared with the board tonight I appreciate that you have childcare for young families who would need that and that could be a barrier to them coming will this packet be provided to people on Friday or on Monday it'll provide it on Friday okay cool I don't want to get too into all my specific ideas cuz I could go on for

077a while and that's why I'm going to the event right two quick two quick things one was could we re upload this same document but without the flip back and forth pages so it makes it easier for people to see just as a anyone who's looking or watching livestream and wants to to see this document and then the other question too was when we're thinking about the dollars that are in this other side unfortunately I would be out of town so I won't be able to make the event that's coming up but making sure that we have some funds allocated to the student groups that are driving some of this works that we're not allocating everything and then we're leaving no resources left for them to continue the work that they're doing in different ways

078and with that being said to one of the thoughts or ideas that would be interesting to explore is something called designing your life as an inclusion protocol that a lot of schools are leveraging universities in particular but now you're seeing some K through 12 schools mostly high schools look at as a mechanism to help kind of design your Greendale experience and make sure that the students are seeing the people in the places and the opportunities there in front of them from day one as they engage and it's something that came out of the Stanford design school number one elective at Stanford actually designing your Stanford experience and now a lot of universities are now picking that up as a mechanism to help that transitional period which might be something that would be one of the

079first high schools that may be implement or try something of this nature using design thinking to help students see connect and improve that sense of belonging Thank You Thor comments or questions just real quick I mean talking to community members you know throughout the past year and obviously some of the many of the challenges our district whose face I would always say we're gonna come out better on the other side of this and I believed in that and I had hope for that I with the details of this plan I truly think that that's gonna happen so thank you for the work because there was a lot of work going into this very good yeah thank you and and thank you for those that are part of the the steering committee I know you have

080a few people here that are involved so thank you for your continued work to move the community forward all right continue on the agenda then next item on the agenda is our annual summer school report so we have MS Owensboro and miss doe and mr. Pollux to talk a little bit about summer school at the elementary as well as these so as you were able to see in the actual report itself here are overall numbers for the summer slightly down from years past reasons why could range from a very short and summer where students wanted does not take up some of the enrichment courses because they wanted to have some time away but really we did see a slight drop in in the overall enrollment at both levels if you go to the next slide

081as far as the summary overall from our high school really it was a summer of flexibility not only facility wise but in and PE one of the things we tried out this year was to add some flexibility to the strict attendance guidelines that we had and we allowed students and families to apply for three additional absences based on their need I'm happy to say we had 34 students take advantage of that and our teachers were absolutely great and demonstrating that flexibility that came at them rather late in this in the the whole process a lot of the stuff was designed up to start and then we came to them saying hey we need to get a little bit more flexibility so so our students can still have this opportunity so I really want to commend

082our PE teachers on really working on on accommodating a lot of these needs and I think the families were very thankful for that as well we were down in numbers especially in PE slightly but that's been kind of a trend that we've noticed especially in that second session a lot of the feedback I get when there's especially at registration I got to get into that first session because it's so hot that that day that turns them off I had many families that would say well if I can't get in that first one we're not going to do it because it does get so hot well we see numbers potentially go up here next in the next few years because we now have air conditioning in our gyms and such that could be a potential that

083second session though it has as the years gone by we have offered more sessions but we had we had pretty low numbers in that second session and then facility flexibility again going back to our Fayette teachers we found out extremely late that we were going to be without our stadium use of the turf and of the track and if you've seen in years past how much we utilize that that's that's a huge loss for us and we found out maybe a couple of weeks before it was starting then to come to find out that they had to make changes to when they needed to get into our gymnasium so we had both our gyms out to so we had students they were they were out on the grass they were out on the parking lots

084they were doing a lot of different things and I can't thank Ryan feet specifically he's our one on staff I a teacher that really leads the group of four teachers and the amount of work that they they put in to make sure that our kids were still getting the need that they are the instruction that they had they did a really great job so again a lot of flexibility was demonstrated by that group this year another idea I want or another point I wanted to bring out as our summer trades Institute as you notice we are we were able to expand this even more this year students we were up to I believe 15 without looking at the exact numbers but the students that were involved with that we're absolutely I actually talked to Ozzie

085the other day about it and he was just excited about it he goes oh really yeah that was awesome that we got we got to keep doing things like that and he really said that it was just because of the hands-on stuff and if you look at the roster of students that were involved with that they really it really lit some a fire under some of these students and we were happy to be able to get them out into the actual these factories these areas and getting some real hands-on real-world experiences and then this is just another couple of pictures of where our students were in these factories where they were getting instruction not from a classroom teacher per se but the people that are actually in the field so really overall it was a

086great experience and we're really looking at expanding this as we couldn't continue to move forward so the k-8 summer school also we had to be a little flexible it would everything was held at the middle school while construction was occurring and so we we did a pretty good job trying to find places for everyone and to run classes we had a 712 students our music classes were like we had or we had 113 students in Orchestra and 33 students in band van was actually held on the other stage so we shut the curtain and they were holding band on our stage this session or this summer school we actually moved to for one-hour sessions prior to this it was three only three sessions and they were in hour and 20 minutes but this allowed for

087more students to sign up for different activities or the enrichment classes and they weren't classes weren't as long for some of the kids I know the 20 minutes doesn't seem like that much but it was or it is for for little kids and for middle school students as well our selected our literacy and math classes one through five were all co-taught with a regular education teacher a special education teacher or the reading specialist which Carey worked really hard on scheduling we had nine student leaders this year to help us out that were scattered throughout the building and it was nice having it all in one building in the sense that they were able to do and get a sense of different classes they worked with younger grades they worked out to work with a little

088bit older grades and so that was pretty pretty fun for them I think new classes this year we had Creative Writing so we had 15 students with in that class we had a teacher that came that taught previously took a year off and then came back and decided she wanted to try to teach a graphic design fast this was a popular class she ran four sessions of this and we had sixty students math games is also a new student or a new class and then trip around the world I'm so as you can see what those numbers those are popular classes and good additions to our summer school program um just some things that we want to highlight with FIRST LEGO League we just have a few pictures so in 2018 we had 24 students

089signed up and now in 2019 this past summer we have 38 students signed up and they kind of changed the structure of the class to really mimic what it would be like to be on a lego league team they had to present they had to do research and then they had to also do the programming or the coding so this just shows pictures parents came in and so they were able to you know show them what they what they were working on all summer and present another class that we added to was woodworking rap price introduced this last year and there was only 14 students that signed up but now since he was able to do it all four sessions we had 54 students and within this class they worked on several different projects one

090of them they've made benches for our Greendale for us that will be put up soon and they have signs that they made for that and then as you can see just different personal projects but the kids I got kicked out oh come on really alright let's try it again as I was saying they made bags they did different different projects they had their choice - they made big signs that they got to design and then create birdhouses so this just is a representation of kind of some of the things that they put together cribbage boards rob is really good at trying to get would donate it to we have he's always looking for things we had floors being taken out our old bleachers he we have them stacked somewhere so he can use that pretty

091creative that's our woodworking um summer school transportation went while I'm parents again completed the forums all schools collected payments and then they were able to each school pass out bus passes it's extremely helpful was first student because we just give them a list and then they route all our students and making sure that there's it's the time isn't too long for the students to be on the bus this year we had only two routes but we had 107 that utilized the bus in the parent survey again they would like to receive more communication updates on just the everyday like a daily classwork I'm just to kind of get a little bit of feedback or maybe like a little bit more communication with what they were doing happy with the registration process however they would really

092like to see more openings in classes that close quickly we would also like to offer that if you know depending on the space that we have in the the teachers that are willing to teach those classes they they said that drop-off and pickup was difficult with so many students we had again 712 students trying to get dropped off and picked up in one little area and so it was there's a lot of people there and pick up one of the things with the online books is they as people really use the summer school web page a lot eight over eighty percent of our students or surveyed parents use it I'm just but of one suggestion was made to be more specific I'm in the class times instructions in the actual booklet so we're gonna work

093hard on really making sure that that's up-to-date and pretty accurate as far as when the registration goes out that they know exactly what classes are offered and one so then when they go in to schedule out or like plan out their time they can usually do that for a bit sign up individual feedback we got from the high school level was an idea of having an a CT prep course over the summer which obviously that's a goal of ours as it is so I already have had preliminary conversations with a few of our teachers that do this during the school year and they have expressed interest and offering something over the summer for that and then when we got together as the three of us and talked about dates we were able to put out

094some examples of what it would look like and what we decided to go with was the vast majority of what our parents wanted us to go with for next year so we were able to follow up with that so for our dates for next year we can't go right after we get out of school because the majority of our teachers Ka teach at other districts so we will be waiting till mid-june to get started along with what parents and staff that was the most beneficial we're gonna stay at four sections K through 8 we're gonna schedule intro to 5k differently that was a little unique coming some four-year-olds almost five-year-olds moving to three different classes because they had intro to 5k some parents wanted to sign the kids up for four different sessions and it

095was kind of it's kind of tricky because some of them were four I'm just signing them up for a middle school schedule so they'll have the option to be there just the intro to 5k which is during two periods or they can have that and then two additional sections but they'll all be in the same ones so they'll all go from gym to art to intro to 5k instead of kind of going in all directions so that was probably the most exciting part of the first couple days so that one's going to be changed and then we will continue to look to expand those enrichment classes as long as space is available so having everyone in the middle school one more year makes that a little bit trickier and moving all the furniture over for

096the littles once we got it down and figured out where things were that works so we have more rooms this you don't we do because we won't have any construction so hopefully we can add a couple different classes it's still as always Greendale summer school is a big thing you've got a hit you know submit at that very first moment one thing that we don't have on here that we talked about parent feedback was if we open it up at nine o'clock in the morning there's an equity issue two parents who are working and aren't able to just be at a computer so we've talked about opening that up in the evening instead and people who work second shift would then have a problem with that but trying to be more equitable and who can

097access that right when we open it up to get those classes and then there's some high school changes yeah we've talked about this in years past as far as developing the 212 strength and conditioning program again this year there was roughly forty to fifty kids that were coming in four days a week working out in the morning and I was it's been in the thoughts for a while for us to look at doing this but I was really excited about a conversation I was able to have with mister feet our fire teacher and coach tools who primarily for the 212 program that's a lot of the football program but we've talked over the years I know I've talked with dr. kilts about it as well as we really need to expand that so it's not

098just a football only program or it's viewed as that so it's gonna be some rebranding but I think the benefits it gives to those athletes and to those students that take part in it I think that would be a way that we're also looking at ways to boost those numbers back up a little bit and by getting those 40 to 50 kids counted that would also bring us back up to where we were a little bit more so we've had we had a very very good conversation about ways of getting creative and making that more more of our and being able to count those students so I'm excited about where that's going as I mentioned our a CT prep course and then again we want to continue to improve and expand that the Institute opportunities

099for the trades how much are the teachers paid by our do they get prep time when our prep time repeating their practice they get five hours and they teach for four hours right those transition times to what torch agree were you limited in using the field outside of the middle school last summer due to the construction due to everything was happening not too limited we just have to sit we had to say like out of the back so with it kids moved to the front for the different like activities and stuff but we had the gym that we were using and I mean it seemed just fine they didn't she didn't have to transition outside of worry so we made that space available for her Carrie did you say that majority of the teachers are

100from out of district or is it 50 what's the split okay and I was just looking at some of the classes that didn't take place this summer was that just due to interest or was it low number or like low numbers or was the course that's not offered there they're just a couple like the reading academy in particular we there's no teacher at this time and some of the classes like the literacy classes and the English or the in later like grades that mimicked some other reading stuff that they would do it during the reading academy so they did like book club things like that ya know yoga we tried we post a few we tried is there like a minimum fill rate on classes for go/no-go or is it it's about eight students and

101some of them that are lower than that is basic probability and things like that are they like they signed up or they had to switch class it or switch depending on a lot of different things I guess but do you look to other districts for ideas on new classes it's like throw them out there and say hey is anybody interested in teaching this course we do that and then if we like parents will give a feedback like what we want we're looking at these classes and then we try to like put that out there this year it was limited we were pretty limited in space and so we couldn't I mean we every single class that was you or that we had at the middle score was used every space was used and so now

102I think next year we have a couple more options as far as where we can go with the students may I suggest you look at the Hamilton school district that's where I've taught summer school since 2004 the offerings are amazing and what I've been impressed with over the years is how we've offered much more in enrichment courses so I appreciate the work in getting teachers to do those those different classes because that's what kids want they want to try something new in the summer certainly what parents want as well the nice thing about going to four sections yes right what they're reading in math very fun it also opened up like four so cooking is a popular class it fills up right away but that gives us one more set like one more section for

103students to be a part of so then it expanded you know the some of those enrichment classes which was nice when you save four sections that means there's more time periods in a day yes I got that it's four times you know the first two weeks the second two weeks the third to four times during the day I think that was a great move and I I contacted a lot of community members this weekend and they they definitely appreciated it they also appreciated the the option with the Fayed that was mentioned before um I'm still spoken about this before and people in this room know I've spoken about this I'm still concerned with the summer Fayed for half-credit and the comments I received from community members that were quite common I liked how it freed

104up the schedule for my son or daughter I liked how they got it over with okay now what I'm putting out somewhat rhetorically is why we've using viewing physical education this way as something to get away get out of the way in the summer I don't think anybody in this room would say that about an English course Oh let's get English out of the way because we don't like English you know in the school year and I say this because obviously obesity is up physical activity from our high school age kids is down we obviously have mental health concerns and my concern and and I know this is a very popular program and my own children have done it but my concern is that for our students they're not having any physical activity in the

105regular school year because of this option and the way we're viewing fayed classes as something to oh just get it out of the way I don't know who wants to I would I would say that in the discussions that we had about allowing for the three additional absences I for one was was very aware of the fact that we don't want to be watering down I mean you only have 25 class periods as it is over the summer and if you allow students to miss up to six that's that's a lot so that's why the alternative assignments that were given were focused on we wanted to really primarily give those or allow for those absences if they were going to some form of a camp if they were going to do some if they were

106participating in a select tournament things like that were they still were active but I would say that it was definitely discussed and will continue to be discussed that I don't want it to be watered down to the point where they are just getting it over with or they are just getting that credit taken care of to speak to your part about not getting exercise during the school day I see I think a lot of those students that want to open up for the class periods are in band or they're in those other things that they're getting visit some physical activity I wouldn't say it's to the extreme are not to the extreme but to the exact levels that she do get in a fight class but they are getting some of that and that's again

107with with our day we have to give them those options to do that but I do want to again I'll say one more time I'm very sensitive to the fact that I don't want a water down are fired are I fired credit over the summer by allowing unlimited absences by any means you know I guess the way I've perhaps you know get it out of the ways the words that people are using but the way and I would interpret that in the way that I've interpreted that is that it opens up things so you know as we talk about individualized learning and letting students choose their pathways you know we're limited your students can be limited you know we have in English a math a science of social studies and then because they're fine arts

108programs are so popular a lot of our students are in a band or an orchestra or music by taking a class like Fayed during the summer it opens up opportunities for that student to that enroll in a project lead away class in an engineering class or biomedical class take you know so I guess that's how I viewed it and that's how I've understood it from some of the families that it opens things up and at the same time we talked a little bit about allowing students an opportunity to take a study hall because they are loaded up with you know all these courses by like you know they still want to do everything but by maybe taking Fayette or some of these other classes economics outside of the normal you know semester that it opens

109things up and I don't know if you have any experience or you want to share any comments yeah so I took summer PE 9th and 10th grade and I also took summer econ and it definitely opened things up for me because I got to take Project Lead the Way classes more ApS and then a study hall but I can see both sides of it because if we wanted to explore making PE only during the school year I think like just to continue this conversation I think the PE waiver should be offered for all grades then because if you're in a sport for all four years of high school I think it sometimes from at least from my point of view I wouldn't want to be in the gym class in ninth grade and then go

110to soccer practice from 3 to 5 so in February I did an analysis of our students participating in summer physical education and their activity during the school year and what we determined is 92% of the students who take summer PE are engaged in physical activity through at least one varsity sport during the school year Kim will you also talked to the larger challenges in the community in the region in terms of partial open enrollment and students taking some RPG potentially with another district if we don't offer it yes so part-time open enrollment requires that the Greendale schools pay tuition to another school district if they have space available to take students so part of the impetus behind allowing additional absences in summer is that we paid Racine for ten students to the tune of approximately

111eight thousand dollars this summer for ten students to get summer PE completely online through the Racine Unified School District and the law prohibits us from denying that for any reason so as a result in order to compete and make sure that we retain as many students as possible and maintain the integrity of the program we need to be able to accommodate family needs in order to continue to provide physical education at the rigor that we value in our community so some of the changes that were made were because the market demands it and the Fayad classes are the most popular at elementary if it makes you feel better about the health care did you mention that I think you did say this before but the furniture had to be moved over this summer yeah that

112that had to have taken some undertaking I don't want to belabor it but which wing we're leaving in which wing were they because they were at the middle school storage the college park rooms because we just took all the furniture and our custodial staff and the college kids were amazing they know I'm art no I wouldn't know thought of that until you said that of all the little easels all the rugs all the tiny chairs so where did you put the rest it was an interesting arrangement at Emerson but it works any other questions all right thank you for coming forward with this report appreciate it thank you thank you all right then we are at the end of our agenda any additional comments or questions from visitors this evening Danny and Mariette we have

113our welcome and diversity on October 18th and it's so important that we also have on the same date at College Park their boo dance which I'm surprised the Thor didn't mention since it would be a huge conflict for families it is also the same day as Han views trunk a treat and to top it off there's a football game that night something so important you would think someone could have looked at the calendar and show us a different date as co-chair I brought up my concerns about choosing the state but just like the treatment I received with dealing with racism no one listening Joe talked about all the change of command that was followed during Chinese situation and let me tell you how that went I talked to Steve Lourdes who had amnesia about Chinese

114even being Carly and where next I was supposed to talk to HR who decided let's pick mr. Weiss he would be a great choice so I talked to mr. Weiss who's best friends with Lotus and a former employee and we know the finding there so the steps in the chains of commands are very bias and those are all simple things that every board member could have looked at but of course they didn't the board refused to investigate though it is something that is listening your very own policy how effective is this board I mentioned the focus group was only made up of black and white students last year Gary said I was lying so easy to find out but did anybody check it out no Gary said my daughter knew this girl who was called

115the n-word another lie she went to Oak Creek something a member who works in Oak Creek could have easily looked into even the girl stated she didn't know my daughter no one on the board blinked an eye ACLU gets involved now we need an alignment now we need to talk about equity since September of last year nothing has changed but talk once again I am NOT up here for you all because you showed me who you are it is to continue to show the world who you are it is to show kids of color and people of color that they need to stand up and feel confident to do so it is to show students like the one here that it's not what people say it's what people do thank you for your comments [Music]

116good evening good evening even that godly as a member of the Greendale Coalition for diversity equity and inclusion steering committee I'm proud of the work that we've done in preparing for the community alignment event and I look forward to presenting it next week and continuing to help to lead the effort while personally there are some elements that I find especially exciting and others that I feel will not significantly address our community's needing it needs in this area overall I'm hopeful this plan will start a process that includes those difficult and uncomfortable but necessary and transformative conversations towards acknowledging and remedying the bias present in our community including of course in our schools one area of discussion that has drawn some light controversy or back and forth has been the ability of the plan and that

117the steering committees work to reach into the schools doctor kilts has explained how the functioning of the district is an independent political and financial entity that is run by a democratically elected Board of Education means that the steering committee cannot outright mandate what goes on in schools in addition dr. Kelso's identified numerous areas of school-based programming that he has explained would already be covered financially under various parts of existing school budgets rather than directly through the money distributed under the action plan and of course we're always happy to as a group that has a limited amount of money to accept that there may be other funding sources but that means it falls to you as the governing body of the schools to ensure that the schools take the necessary steps to keep up with the

118changes that we hope to see under this plan the steering committee will suggest directions in this area but I ask you to take your oversight role to heart heart in this in this and to make sure that the activities in the schools are substantial meaningful and transformative as well as remedial and restorative of existing and past injuries I also asked you as I did at the annual meeting to ensure the efforts towards meaningful inclusion and equity programming in the schools are adequately funded as a key budgetary priority thank you thank you for your comments we do limit comments to once an meeting thank you any other comments this evening all right then we are adjourned and we will be going into a closed session meeting so I asked for a motion to move into closed

119session I move that we go into closed session under Wisconsin statute 19.8 v 1c in the principles conference room immediately following the meeting for the purpose of considering employment promotion compensation or performance evaluation data of public employees over which the governmental body has jurisdiction specifically for the purpose of considering the performance evaluation of the superintendent second there's been a motion a second to move into closed session any further discussion and I call for a roll call vote yes yes yes yes yes and we are motion carries we are adjourned and we will not be coming back into open session after this evening's closed session and our next regular a school board meeting is October 28th which is the 4th Monday of the month and it's the fourth Monday of the month because in October we

120will be taking action on the tax levy and state statute requires that we meet no earlier than the 4th Monday so we are adjourned
