year marked by challenge and change for so many obvious reasons right planning this event was a challenge finding a date an annual challenge and following guidelines that could change at a moment's notice was particularly challenging as for changes you only have to look around to notice those all the empty seats the masks and the camera despite all of this it's quite remarkable that we are inducting the largest number of students in the past five years there's 36. i really had to work to get the names to appear on one page of the program despite the challenges over the last year and the change in educational modes these students still met the requirements for membership there are four pillars of the national honor society that make these students stand apart and they are scholarship leadership service
and character of course the students gpa show how dedicated they are to scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge even with the changes to our learning environment these students either maintained this dedication or used it to challenge themselves to do better and earn that 4.20 gpa their commitments to extracurricular activities show their leadership and service here at elhs all of this is impressive with all of the changes logging on to meetings remotely after school after being on google meets for class all day shows how much these students want to participate finding opportunities to show leadership and service was the biggest challenge for students in a socially distant school year yes this theme is apropos of the 2020 2021 school year but i'm looking forward to next year's theme yes i've already come up with one here
comes the sun is next year in which these inductees will shine their freshman year of college or their senior year of high school i'd like to now introduce the president of the east long meadow high school chapter of the national honor society kylie fox who will officially begin the ceremony [Applause] hello everyone i'm kylie fox welcome to the 2021 induction ceremony for the east long meadow chapter of the national honor society i would like to start by thanking all of the high school staff and faculty school committee superintendent smith and our friends and family in the audience and watching from home you've given these inductees the support and resources that allowed them to be here tonight the national honor society was founded on march 1st of 1921. making this year its centennial anniversary incidentally tonight
we have one of the largest groups of inductees we have ever seen at east long meadow high school and without a doubt contains some of the brightest minds of the future at such a significant milestone in the society's history it is a privilege to be sharing it with all of you this evening students sitting here today are some of the most hardworking and driven peers i have been lucky enough to know they excel not only in academics but in life through their contributions to the community of usang meadow and their clear demonstrations of leadership in the many athletic and extracurricular activities we offer here being surrounded by like-minded people is one of the greatest motivators people helping and encouraging others to do their best for the benefit of the individual as well as the group
it is and it is abundantly evident that their success will continue long after their high school career comes to close now the membership of the east long beach national honor society has been earned by the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by this society four of our members will review these qualities for the candidates scholarship means a commitment to learning a student is willing to spend hours in reading and study knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind we should continue to learn even when formal education has ended for education and only with the end of life knowledge is one great element in life which leads to the highest success and it can be acquired in only one way through diligence and effort learning furnishes the lamp by which we read
the past and the light which illuminates the future candidates have have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship service service can be described in various ways in the routine of the day's work many opportunities arise to help others willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or recognition is the highest quality we seek in our membership we are committed to the idea of volunteering our time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school and taking the initiative in class and school activities the real leader strives to train and aid others to attain the same objective the price of leadership is sacrifice the willingness to yield one's personal interests for the interest of others a
leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate no matter what power and resources may exist in a country they're ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader leadership is always needed thus to lead is a substantive charge to each of our members and character character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others it gives each of us our individuality is that without which no one can respect oneself or hope to attain the respect of others this is this force of character that guides one through life and when once developed grows steadily characters achieved and not received it is the product of constant action daily striving to make the right choice the problem of character is a problem with self-control we must be in reality what we wish to appear
daughters by demonstrating such qualities as respect responsibility trustworthiness fairness caring and citizenship we may hope to prove by example that we value character will the candidates please rise candidates if you agree with these four pillars of our organization you're welcome to join us in the following pledge i pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the national honor society to which i have been selected i will be true to the principles for which it stands i will be loyal to my school and will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship service leadership and character when your name is called please walk across the stage to receive the membership certificate will the following candidates come forward to be inducted in the east longmeadow high school chapter of the national honor society you can sit and then
i'll call you let's go okay uh just one more piece before we get to the uh distribution certificates um so i just would like to send a quick message to the students who are here tonight uh so on behalf of the elhs administration i would like to thank everyone for joining us for tonight's ceremony both those who are here and who are watching at home however tonight uh why they are here and why we are here is not simply because of what these students have accomplished in the classroom becoming a member of the national honor society goes beyond academic recognition becoming a member is a charge to be a leader amongst your peers as a class officer as a student council representative becoming a member is acting as a role model through service to your
school and community through the key club or other volunteer programs becoming a member is having the character be compassionate honest and ethical as you walk the halls of elhs becoming a member of the national honor society means that you embody each of their four pillars scholarship leadership service and character on a daily basis we are here tonight because these students time and again have demonstrated their commitment to this higher standard however the embodiment of these standards does not simply end with tonight's induction what is so great about this group of 36 individuals is the work that they continue to do together after tonight i've seen our national honor society do great things here whether it be tutoring they're struggling peers coordinating running charity drives the individuals who work the individual work that they have been
doing prior to tonight will become a collective effort to better the world around them i am proud to have the privilege to work with these young men and women every day and see the awesome things that they are accomplishing i am even prouder to say that these young adults are now deserving members of our elhs national honor society so with that ms fox uh it is time to hand out some certificates julia ferentino miranda rodolakis [Applause] foreign olivia watson attica awan nina bedford kyle burks [Applause] delaney barello michael carlone nicholas cassidy alexandros dimitro glue [Applause] elise donahue [Applause] james dodie [Applause] dylan delginos kyle fisk [Applause] kyle garvey hannah [Applause] aaron hamilton brandon hanouche alana joyce robert kane amon karana stefania lacorie garrett mccoskey allison mandrala [Applause] rebecca manna [Applause] gabriella michelski [Applause] sarah moriarty
