001than just the >> and it's a good reminder that those are all maze so we could choose like hey this is a bid that we will not put agent okay and I can on top of it if it does get in there anybody can pull sure >> and and by board policy any one member of the board can pull anything from there so it doesn't take like a motion it's just relate anybody on the board can say I would like that off the consent regular okay >> I'll make a motion to approve these policies >> second Any other discussion? All in favor say I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carried. >> So we move on to the gas bits. All right. So um what was attached is very similar um that you've seen last year.
002So we had one gas bid for our bus transportation Berlin Oil. Um, as you can on the attachment, the total between unleted and the diesel fuel would be approximately $72,000. [clears throat] Then we have two bids for our two tanks here at Clay Lambertton. Last year we went with United Cooperative and we did receive a rebate check which was from August to December in the amount of $222. Um, Condan Oil came in with a bid as well for unleted and then died diesel which is our off-road vehicles. Their total um bid approximately would for a yearly cost would be about $12,000. United Cooperative for the same fuel came in at $10,82. The recommendation is to stay with Berlin Oil for our buses and award United Cooperative for the two tanks at CL. >> And one
003thing you probably don't have included in there is the rebate you get back from your Patrick Patro. >> That's what that $222 is. >> We rebate check up at the top of the second board. >> Oh, right there. Yeah. Yeah. >> Gotcha. What is that? >> Patridge. Patrinage. So if you if you take that off of the 10,8002, we're down to 10. >> But if we stay with them, we now we would have a rebate pay patronage rebate from January to December this year. So I mean could be 400 this time. >> It's usually five to eight cents a gallon. >> It's a dividend though, isn't it? Not just every day. >> No, we actually get a check. Yeah, you got to check and then after 10 years you get because part of that gets
004invested into the cooperative and after 10 years then you get start getting that what you invested every year back too. So you get two different >> I'm just thinking the passion that that >> Yeah, you get that every year, but then a portion of that gets invested into the cooperative. >> And I will tell you um you know Josh has really liked working with United Cooperative because they come and they measure or they have a meter on it so they know when to come. When we had been with Condo previously, we would have to call and they would come and fill it up. Now it It's all electronically so they know >> of his his team. >> Move to approve. >> Second. >> All in favor say I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carried. Okay.
005So, we're going to go to discussing the board goals. And I know Nick had sent out the survey and he sent today. Was that today? >> Yesterday. yesterday >> the results. So, um, one thing that I I did talk I at the teacher orientation on Monday, is that Monday? Yep. I did mention that we were working on goals. So, I just wanted to keep the staff informed about that. Um, so I don't know, Nick, how you wanted to >> Well, I think so. It's the when I got this when I got summarized it spit it out two different ways. I think the first way that I have listed the number two option on the email makes more sense. That column one it's referring to uh that is the that is for parents. It's not it's
006not clear on there but that's the parent directed one. Column two is obviously then just the district as a whole and column three is the staff by the looks of it. So I I guess we can just go through each one individually, but column one is is there anything that you feel should be added? Is there anything that doesn't make sense? Again, this is for parents [cough and clears throat] email that you would have gotten yesterday. >> Yeah, I just wasn't I was trying to read them too and I was trying to pick [laughter] which categories were. that column one would be parents. So again, these are kind of action steps to try to improve that metric that was included on the form. >> Can um Ally or EMTT, do we have um data on
007clickables on how many are viewing the um newsletters? >> We can get that. that an update. >> I was just curious how many are actually opening. >> Yeah. >> If it's going to be beneficial to go through >> because we move to the electronic form now through the platform, they we could get that. She says >> I could gather that for the month of August. The August newsletters. >> Sure. I think it would just be good to if one of our things is having a a board update in the newsletters. I'm just wondering how many are. >> Will you send that to me so I can put it in the update, please? I think we should utilize the newsletters too for [snorts] just simple one word one question survey Google forms just kind of very
008specific you know they can >> they're monthly yeah >> I don't think that's kind of listed there is it >> old listening sessions that no one comes to you know is kind of hard >> but you can get feedback either Any other comments? >> So, what are you asking for right now? >> So, those five that are listed, is there any that you just disagree with? Is there >> column one? >> Under column one, key themes on the summary, >> be more present in the community. >> In your email, >> I won't be home. Yeah, I got I got the vote goals. >> It started with Catherine and then Nick >> responded. >> It's not the one directly. >> Scroll all the way to >> August 26, 11:42 a.m. >> Okay. Okay. I I was
009looking at the spreadsheet. Okay. >> Yeah. So, these kind of summarize the spreadsheet. thanks to co-pilot. I agree though listening sessions obviously aren't uh >> I mean we had so many people standing to get into our referendum stuff but now if we're talking parents maybe I don't know >> but I think it's easy to do the surveys >> and we can easily you can easily create it through Google right >> easy cheap yeah click Y >> I think the very act of having something like that would be positive >> just oh hey they they can't they're asking about our fe our thoughts. Yeah. [snorts] >> Especially if it's like you're saying like a one or two question right >> be sure as long as we have a way to kind of report that out and
010say what's happening because of that feedback. >> Yeah. >> True. So when people come and this this may be community and parents, but when people come and and voice a concern to the board and they're limited to their three minutes, um what would what would you think about having we're not going to engage at that time obviously, but having someone um assigned to to get back to that person at to follow up at a certain time? It seems to me that people can come and voice something that's very heavy on their heart and and we listen and shake our heads and then I don't know that there's ever any followup to to these >> Catherine followed up in the past. >> I used to speak religiously back in the day. [laughter] >> So would somebody
011get back to you then after? >> Catherine did. >> Okay. So is there is that happening? >> But is that every time? I don't know. That's something for >> Cather or are we talking that I'm doing that? >> I don't know. Is there anybody that >> I don't know if anybody is I'm saying is there a system or is >> I mean to Kina's point I have I >> I think if everyone on the board would commit to if if there's let's just say that I'm I'm incredibly busy at work and I say Mike do you think you could get back to that person and this is if we all commit to it I say that's absolutely but >> um to to say that I'm going to try to do all of that and and
012then I'm I'm a guessing if we're going to have this survey, I'm the one that's going to have to like organize the response and all that. So, I don't want to overcommit. So, if if all nine of you are agreeing to help me, absolutely, we can do it. You know, if it's >> it it's I did respond to one person one time and and I was feeling uncomfortable like, am I really supposed to be >> I think as long as as we're all on the same page with our response. Well, that that's what I'm saying. If if someone presents to us, if we had some way of getting back to them as a just making sure that they they knew that they were hurt, I guess because we're emitt, you know, we will talk and
013we >> usually talk right after. >> Yeah. Usually she sends out an email and says this is what we did to follow up. >> If there's a parent that was specific to like a curriculum need or whatever, >> we'll talk and then either I'll get back to them or principal get back or we'll both. So, I can think of several examples. >> So, I think I think this was brought up before and I just need to do a better job of communicating to the board that either Emmen or I have responded to the person >> or if it's something that one of us feel passionate about, you know, the topic or some, you know, nothing's holding us back. Hey, Katherine, I'll take this one. I can [snorts] I feel comfortable responding. >> But as long
014as we are responding as one voice. >> Exactly. Not as a person. >> One voice. Yeah. And and I'm just bringing it because I I've heard people say, "Well, I come and I talk and then I never get any followup." I just want to make sure it's they're getting follow the parent or >> perception or responsiveness. >> Anything else there? No. Okay, column two. This is for community members. The thing about the community one is it's not included, you know, like there's not really a baseline this year. So, part of it is going to have to be how do you determine what that metric is right now or at the end of the year or I mean, that's probably the most logical one is figuring out how you measure that to begin with, right? >>
015There's a reason I didn't comment on that one because I don't know what [laughter] >> I don't know how you don't think we financially want to do a communitywide perception survey, right? But there's there's got to be cheaper options. And then you throw in the whole, yeah, it's easy to put a form out there, but how many people are getting their information from the newspaper that we would need to have a code or a link or a stop in the school and pick up a paper version or a How do you hit everybody in the in the district? I don't know what that answers. Well, how how would you um this inclusive p policy development trying to to get input from parent staff and and students? How how would you do that unless you had
016forums or how right I'm not sure how how you would >> invite them to the meetings like if you have a student liaison you know >> the board meeting >> yeah to the committee meeting um you know if you're looking for input on policies you could have a student leazison a teacher leaison or on the comm but a leazison to come and just offer their input from their perspective. They don't have to be a board member or a committee member. There definitely are boards that have like a standing student representative. They aren't a voting member. They're a but they're a member of the board as a leaison or a >> Travis brought that up, didn't he? One of his classmates. So, >> yeah, I've talked about that a couple times. I talked to Bryant about
017that too because it clearly probably be a high schooler, right? And they're very open to that. We could just put it out there and it's just an idea. >> Years ago, they had your the student council was always invited but never came. I think it was deal. I mean, again, that was 20 years ago. So, >> do we have a president of the VA right now? >> Are they organized like that? >> Of the what? He's referring to the future. >> It does, but it's very small. >> So, I mean, when you still years back always had the president of DEA was at all the board meetings and how what's the chances of getting some leadership of the staff to be president of the board meetings to be able to improve communication through that? I'm
018sure we can invite I if that's what we want to do. >> I guess that's not on parent or community right now on teachers. I mean I when they had it before I thought it was it was >> Emma. Do you have like a spokesperson of your what do you call it council? >> Yeah. No, but I could ask if somebody or one or two of them would like to volunteer to come to board meetings just >> and it wouldn't have to be the same one like >> so Sarah she's not president she's she's in a lot of Tammy >> or Tammy I'm sorry um she she's not >> no but she comes >> representative I mean she's not authorized representative of the >> do they have a yeah I don't >> they're just all
019members nobody's official rep are they? >> I actually don't know. I The BEA is not a certified union anymore. So, I don't know how they organize themselves. You know, >> it don't have to be called BEA, but >> I don't know if they're actually formally organized or it's just a kind of loose group of people, staff. I don't know that. >> I think Rick's on the right path. I think you ask at your advisory meeting to see if someone, you know, they could >> they could change up. It makes sense that they're connected to that group because they're already a part of like feedback loops. >> Yeah. I like that. >> And so >> I was just so I'm like trying to figure out where this is fitting into. We're under the inclusive policy development
020or the like where where are we thinking that we need a rep under what which one of these is? >> I think we moved to column three. I >> think with that one >> sorry I was like this is not fitting in. >> I think it's three. I think the big one at number two is coming up with the the way to measure something. >> So if you're going to put a Google form in a newsletter, those newsletters can be shared with community, right? So they can share it out on their Facebook page or wherever newsletters. >> I mean, I wrote I don't think it made it in the thing, but I would still like to see a newsletter to [snorts] like non-parents just >> to the community. Yeah. text >> and even [clears throat]
021if that's quarterly or something I don't right but >> that's just my own personal release there is >> because that'd be yeah an avenue then >> and it could just say something in that newsletter like community members are welcome to >> have a personaliz we're not just numbers >> it could just say I'm filling this out as a parent or I'm filling this out as a community member >> true >> oh and then new logic or whatever that's called That is >> it. Yeah. >> How many taxing jurisdictions do we like? >> 14. >> Now we talked about to the whole even with the failed referendum with the city pass but the surrounding ones didn't um attending some of their meetings breaking up and splitting up as a board. >> Nobody goes to >> Nobody
022comes to our meetings either. But it doesn't mean >> I'm just saying it's just the board members. >> But a lot of the board members weren't aware of why we were having a referendum. So if you can sell the board members, they can help spread the word. I'm not saying there's droves of people going, "Believe me, I know. But just anything to help spread the word or answer the questions or just for presence. >> Could we make sure that the newsletters are sent out to all the board members?" >> That's a great idea. That's >> because there was there was a lot in the >> Yeah. >> But what newsletter? The ones that come from the school or the one that Nick is proposing? >> Either one. >> Either or. >> Ones from the school
023do go every >> They go to parents, but there's a lot of go. [clears throat] No, they're talking about the big thing of each one. >> They don't care about how much. >> Right. Right. >> But if we could direct them to one specific >> section >> and especially if we're going to add some kind of a president's corner or some kind of a our corner, that one at least could get sent. >> Keep in mind that every mailing we do comes at a cost. >> Is there email addresses? I was thinking like Mailchimp. I was thinking >> eletail. What do we use? I guess I don't even know what we use. Is it like a >> You could just send it to the clerks, you know, and they can make sure that then they
024could email it to the other >> or social media page or whatever they have. >> Yeah. >> Communicate. >> So, so just let's just back up a second. Who's doing all of this? So, is the newsletter part then going to Allison? like we'll decide what we want and then she'll put it together. So I think we have to these are great ideas but we have to execute them. So what's the thought process? [laughter] >> I could take the lead on a newsletter but again it's going to be a lot of existing stuff. >> So when you do the newsletters right >> plus Yeah. How hard is it to like pull things from each school to kind of combine it as a district? Is that pretty extensive? >> But are we talking about a board newsletter?
025Are we talking about like a a district like a communityf facing newsletter? >> Community facing one. But a large part of that would be >> showing cute kids in the school, right? We talked we talked about doing >> did you want this online or something that comes via mail because I think >> online something like that. >> So you just want less clicks because right now a newsletter goes out with each indivual each individual information specific to each school. So you just want one combined newsletter. >> I think you'd have to take it I'm sorry. I think you'd have to take it and you'd maybe have to work with like Nick and I and we'd have to say these are three things we think we should get out to the community and then the board
026wants to have this in our as a little piece too. So it wouldn't be the it wouldn't be everything that you have in there. We would have to >> go through it and pick out what we want to send out >> kind of a copy and a paste like yep this section would be great for the community. They should hear that >> highlighted things, highlights of the quarter. >> Is that something that could go onto the agenda of one of the committees or a rotating? >> Well, there's a public relations committee. >> The only thing I worry about is that so Allison has a specific timeline on [clears throat] how she's getting all of that because I wrote that down. If if I'm going to have to be part of this, I got to get
027on the same page as you. So that would be my only concern is that we wouldn't be hitting the right time or the news would get would get stale. >> Or could you send out like a quarterly one? >> You could >> like four or six of them a year. >> That might be better because if they're giving mandated fees that stop >> my only opinion would be if we did it monthly, you'd be getting a lot of duplicate information. >> Yeah. >> Right. [snorts] >> But that would be fine. every few months. >> So, so why don't we So, why don't we do this? So, we're all agreeing. I'm sorry, Nick. I'm taking >> We're all agreeing we want to do some kind of a newsletter. Why don't >> Nick and I get together
028with Allison and come up with some proposals. We'll send it out to everyone and you all can kind of, you know, give us your thought process, what kind of things you actually want to see in it. How does that sound? And I'm working at home the next two weeks. So if you're going to talk about it soon, I could Okay. Come in too. >> Yeah. I don't know. What? December 1st. >> I still think quarterly would be just >> Yeah. >> October >> just to have some kind of an idea and then they can't say what we never told them. >> Yeah. You'd have the school stuff but then I I envision like a technical side of it too. This is what the board is doing. administrative control of the district. I would recommend that
029whatever the timeline is you direct us to >> that we could put together like a draft that you could then give feedback on. >> Right. >> Because otherwise it's going to be like too many cooks in the kitchen. For sure who's telling what to whom or whatever. But if we know like here's when you'd like these out there, then we can work together to put that in with like what we're thinking. Do you want like a separate corner for some like board specific things or do you right just to give us feedback >> or even from our meetings like hey this one we need to make sure we pinpoint this one for the newsletter. >> Yeah I I think that would be more streamlined. >> Okay >> and the audience as well we would need
030specific email addresses >> shouldn't be that harder info. >> Yeah. So if it's I think I like the idea of the clerks circulating it to the clerks and they can circulate it to theirs to their board. Well, and a Facebook post just saying, "Are you interested in a newsletter?" >> Yeah. Yeah. >> And we talked, Nick has talked about, we talked about creating uh like a list or sort of option. So, if you are a community member that's not a parent anymore, um that you could go into opt in for like news for the district, >> right? >> So, that could be something else we put on our website or push out >> and then it would automatically just collect emails. And it could be like we'll have to look to see if the newsletter
031feature Alice that if they have that still because I know like constant contact then if you're on that list but then you don't want anymore you just unsubscribe >> and you don't have to do that manually. So we're going to have to do a little check and see if it allows that. That'd be awesome. >> Our platforms you can't subscribe to but a constant contact you would be able to as a community member >> right that could be kind of so we can talk about >> Sure. >> something like that. fully easier on our end then and then it would just be like subscribe to it or you unsubscribe to it. >> So under um staff engagement under the column three um has been thrown out there the idea of having board representation at advisory
032committee meetings. Is that going to happen or is that >> Oh yeah. >> Something that can be done >> like a rotate like a rotator. Um, probably not every time, but like we could we talked about having um like set like if there's a meeting or agenda we want to get that feedback or a feedback loop that that would make sense. >> Would that improve the perception of the staff if the board was actively >> I think there's a a line a governance line we have to worry about. It'd be kind of like if board members were at all our staff meetings or whatever. It's not something we I think would be really wise, but I think if it's done in a like if it's like, hey, here's a couple times we're going to specifically
033giving two back two-way feedback, whatever, then that could be done. >> The other thing that I think we have to remember is this is EMTT's advisory meeting. So, I think it is something that yes, we can attend, but I think it has to be like he's saying that it's a specific item because I don't think that it's our place to, you know, take over his advisory meeting and start talking there. I don't think that's our place. I think if he thinks we should be there, absolutely. If we want to look if if we want to look at the what his um agenda is and say, you know what, I think this is a good one. Mike should if Mike's got some time he's going to come to that one but us going to every single
034one of them then now it's become not his advisory meeting his it's become of the board and EMTTs and I just don't I think you're blurring I don't think so that the intent would be for us to go talk we're just observing we're it's it's a face in there because that's what they're saying is they don't feel like we're listening or we're or we're hearing or it would be a face it's not Uh >> but doesn't dynamic of that meeting it's not I mean so we're so we're going it's his advisory meeting and we're a face there because because why it's it's it's >> and I feel like like a leazison like any other boards use city hall for example we all of us board members are leazison to all the committees to all the
035so we go in case they have questions um or if just to hear how they're point just to be able to report back or or whatever it takes. But it's Eliza. >> So besides the the perceptions survey, how do we as board members get any feedback from staff? >> Well, I was thinking about this and yes, I I bring up surveys all the time, right? So [laughter] obviously I like the idea of a very like a one and to your point, Katherine, I was thinking about this too. It's like obviously behavior is still an issue, right? So if you send [clears throat] out a question that says here is our code of conduct which is what the board is responsible for you know you have to be very specific because yeah again like I don't
036like my boss is not necessarily the board's jurisdiction there but the code of conduct is so I think you just if we ask these questions if we ask surveys but we have to have very pointed surveys about certain very specific issues in our jurisdiction that that's in my mind something that you could do that' be easy and and I don't think we're stepping on toes that way. But I agree. You go to a meet I've been to meetings where I was the board member and staff with staff and the whole you know it [snorts] was it was something >> it's a different p it's a it's a different vibe. What were those meetings? who was on the board when remember we had the [clears throat] meetings and it was with Carl and I remember sitting
037in this room and it was administration and board and and the whole vibe was just Were you on the board then? >> It couldn't have just been me. >> I was. >> Yes, you were on when Carl was on. >> Yeah, we we were in this room. I can specifically we were talking about um I think we talked about pay and benefits and it was just a totally different >> Do you remember that? >> It wasn't strategic planning. >> That's what I was thinking because we did that too. >> Again, I'm not opposed to us coming, but I think it has to be for a specific >> agenda. I I think too like I don't know how many board members do tours of the school throughout the year, right? There's other there's events that just
038going helps. >> Are you saying tours or events which are they two different things? >> I guess from a staff perspective if they see you in the school right that helps I don't know Jimbo Beth you're the actual former teachers here. >> Yeah. It's nice to see people show up for things that are going on. It's just hard during a workday for a lot of >> Well, Mike, you went into the classrooms and and that was probably some of the best feedback you ever got. It's different when you're on one-on-one with someone as opposed to in a group. Some people aren't going to talk. >> Well, no, I I just observe. I mean, I didn't observe, >> but >> Well, why don't we why don't we why don't we say this? Why don't we let
039EMTT go back to his advisory team, say, you know, if there's a if there's an agenda item that you think we should come to, then we'll throw it out to the board. I think it could only be one board member. I don't think we want to show up like three of us. So then if it's something you want to participate in or Katrina you want to participate what then I think that's when but you're invited to it as opposed to just always being there >> right so ask the advisory committee if you know if things come up and you would like to have a board member here >> I I think the idea of creating more feedback groups with staff with board is absolutely a good idea right just about how to do just about
040the Well, because clearly we we want them to know that you support them, you're hearing them, but also that you're hearing all of them, right? Not just one side of the the voices. So, I like the idea that you're getting out to events, you're doing a tour of the building or getting involved is is a great way here. This is a small community. You hear a lot of things through the grapevine or just on side conversations. So, you just want to make sure you have enough information so that you're hearing different perspectives. So, >> when is your next You probably won't have one till October. >> Um, no, it'll be middle of April of September. [laughter] Middle of Middle September. It's been one day. Middle of September will be the first one, >> you know.
041And another thing, >> I always wait for a couple weeks in the school year. >> Sure. To keep in mind, too, is, you know, Katherine, Nick, Mike, and Sarah were at Monday's kickoff. welcome back. But any of those days where it's just staff days, PD, you know, maybe it's you just coming in and and just talking to them, you know, just giving them a few words of encouragement. It's a whole group at one time and they your your faces are seen there. >> They they love that. They notice it. It doesn't have to be everybody every time, right? Like two or three coming to those events a little bit or even for part of it, you know, for a bit and like checking out, they notice. They're like, "Great, >> that's a great idea. Maybe
042what we could do is um we could get some volunteers when it is the PD day." And then, you know, >> send out dates. >> Yeah, that's Yeah, I'd have to get >> I'd have to ask for vacation time to sign. I just need to know. >> They're all on the district calendar. They're all under the >> But I'll put it What I think we'll do is we'll put it at the top of the update. So then everyone would know. And if you know ahead of time, then you could just maybe message me and say, "I'm going to go to the PD day. >> [clears throat] >> I know first day of school bus [laughter] and at the end of the day they love to have a couple extra adults there when >> Yeah. >>
043It's also just nice to welcome kids the first couple days, right? >> Yeah. Didn't you always invite like Mike you always went to the first day of school and >> I was gonna ask if we were going to do that. >> Yeah. Anybody's invited to like the the first big game party. Come out. Just Allison's gonna be going around taking pictures of kids and there's some signage and it's just a lot of fun. So, you're all invited. >> Um, kids start really arriving well 7:30 for sure. >> Say 7:30 to 7:50 is the sweet spot. >> And then >> 3:25 say 3. >> They start dismissing a little early the first couple days as they're working on the buses and stuff. So I'd say 3:15 you're say 3:15 to 3:25. 3:30 as it gets Yeah.
0443 Yeah. So 7:30 to 7:50. 3:15 to 3:30 would be the two spots. >> I know last year I couldn't get here and it was probably closer to 3:30, but it was nice just to talk to the teachers. >> Yeah. They really appreciate. So >> you're available for either of those or whatever. I say especially the first two days, >> you know, and it's in two locations. The elementary parent drop off is here, but the bus drops off between all three buildings. So, >> yeah. The older kids might scare you or depends on where you are in your life. [laughter] >> Okay. I'm going to say something that probably may not go over very well, but I'm I'm going to >> Is it on the topic? Is it on the topic of the board goals
045to the member 6 agenda? It has to do with how we respond to concerns and and and my I'm just picturing myself I'm a I'm a a teacher and and I fill out this survey and I and I say in there that I have [clears throat] concerns the students are distracted. I mean it's obvious that's that's a big concern. the kids kids are distracted and then I write in there about um one of the big distractions is um the use of phones and I'm as a teacher asking you as a board to examine your policy and look into helping us out with this and um and I I I can read the quote but I mean they they they put their quotes in there about their concerns and asking the board to um change or
046look at the policy and and maybe made some changes to help them out because they see this as a big a big problem. And um we as a board then it's it's all there. They they've gone through the proper channels. How how do we we haven't really even addressed this and um >> that's not true, Mike, but you know that. Well, I it's been brought up at a policy meeting and it was pretty much said um the what was said was the teachers are not enforcing the rules that are already there, but the teachers know that they're asking us for some some help. And I I don't know. I I I would like to know how do we get to address these types of issues as a board and be able to show that we
047we we do want to respond to to these concerns and and maybe I'm way off, but I I don't see that we're we're doing anything about this and it's been raised as a they're they're asking for us to address this and and we're we're not. And I think that is a on the topic our perception is that they've asked for some some help and we're not addressing it. >> I think what we would have to do is we know at Clay Lambertton phones are not allowed at all and at middle school they're not. So it must be a high school issue. So I think what what would have to happen is the board has to put a directive to the high school because we can't go in there and police it and say admin and
048at the high school and teachers at the high school. The board is saying that we want you to enforce that policy. That's the only thing that I can figure out that we could do because unless we're going to go and police all those classrooms. So I think we would have to put a directive down through Bryant and um through Kurt that say that this is a continually cons continued concern of our teachers and um parents are hearing it from their kids. we want you to enforce this and if we're hearing and if you're not then >> and I'll put my if I'm a teacher and I say um okay I know this policy and this is remains a distraction we've got to try and figure out where these phones are if they're in the classroom
049and all this um and the board says you know we we could help you out by making a policy saying the phones don't come to classrooms leave outside the classroom. And granted, if they just enforced the policy that was there, they might be able to do that. But this has been going on for a couple years and it hasn't been working. They're asking for help. So the board had an o has an opportunity to say keep the phones in in your your your locker, keep them out of the classroom. and that may improve and show the the staff that we are concerned about this and that that this this could be a a way of improving our academic performance by just removing distractions because I think that's one of the major things that our perception
050survey is telling us is that we have to try to get rid of distractions because that's the number one thing that's affecting play middle and high school. So >> I'm just making it clear though. So that directives come from me to the principles. So I just want to make it clear that the board doesn't direct. >> I'm sorry. I say we would direct to you and you would direct. >> I just want to make it clear for >> I mean I agree Mike. I I agree with your second half of this that have we connected the dots to show that we actually did listen. No one's joining our policy meetings, right? No one's knowing what we're talking about at those meetings necessarily, unless the paper picks up and they read the paper. I disagree that
051we're not doing anything. Um, but I do agree that we have to somehow close that loop better because I think we are they they're clamping down at high school this year on the existing policy that says you can't have phones in the classrooms. So like I don't know how that's not doing nothing because it's different than last year. I agree. Have we communicated that to staff that we hear this concern, the admin heard this even before we even talked about it and changed some tactics? Um, and this is what's different. I I I get what you're saying there and I can see that. >> I think what I would see would be helpful because this some of this isn't helpful. What I think is helpful is when the board is able to stand with administration
052with us collectively and say we all support the idea right that kids can get distracted from their phones and the policy and the practice that is currently being like we're ramping up the enforcement of that we're all on the same page that we together are supporting that that we feel like that's what's best for kids that I think helps. So, as a board member, if if this has been addressed with with the teachers, I I didn't know that. >> We talked about this at the last meeting >> and Brian, >> welcome back to school and he addressed it for chunk of time. >> They said keep enforcing what we already have is what I remember >> just because we did. >> Can I say something from a communication standpoint? Sure. It was pushed out from
053each principal that cell phones are not allowed and Brian did push that out from a high school level and so did Colleen at middle school. Brian did send out the um high school um handbook. And on page 13 uh number 13 on the cell phone policy, you will read two paragraphs that say cell phones are not allowed. And that did go out to parents and staff. So maybe keep them in their locker, but they cannot have them in their bags or in their pocket when they are in the classroom. >> And I've attended Brian's welcome back with the staff. They put a lot of effort this year into ramping up. >> Yes. >> What they started last year and colleagues, too. >> So yeah, I just disagree completely that that there isn't an increased effort
054over the last two years. And are we [snorts] there completely? No. But that's the way it goes. But like I agree with you, Nick, like there is a ramped up effort to make sure this is happening. So >> So when I tal you, you said that they still could have them as long as they weren't out in the classroom. If if they're being kept in the locker room that in the locker room that's that's perfect, but um >> but what she said is what actually >> I don't understand why you don't remember, Mike. That's not our fault. But like that was what was said. That's what's in policy. That's what's in the handbook. That's what's been shared. >> Middle school cannot have them at all, but at a high school level, they can keep them
055in their locker per this handbook that Bryant did send out, but they are not allowed in pockets or backpacks in the classroom. >> And that's what you that's what we want, right? >> Exactly. But I guess >> Well, it doesn't matter what we remember. It's what actually Bryant sent out to the parents and to the students. Don't you think? >> Yeah. I I wish I I don't know how I could have totally missed that, but it sounded to me like they could still bring them to the classroom if they didn't. >> It's not what Bryant sent out. >> Okay. >> Not a lot. >> Do you want to Allison, do you want to maybe just send those portions to us to the board as a whole so we could all see it? Would you like
056to see what he sent out? >> Sure. >> I can send that. And to our point when we're talking about these PD, you know, one of us could go to this next PD in September and and say exactly what you're saying. We support this policy. We're 100% behind it. >> The personal or what is it called? Professionals of development. Sorry. [laughter] >> You can part of the police department if you want to. So to your point though, Mike, yes, there has to be that we have to close that loop. Once you do solicit feedback on [snorts] certain things, what's coming from that and how do we communicate that? I think that's a valid point. >> What number are we on now? >> I think we're not on a number. >> Oh, supposed to be part
057of the >> I can so I can take this feedback and like come up. We don't need five of these things listed for each month. So, try to narrow them down because we said last month we would approve them in September. So, we have this month to >> iron out >> and I'll try to step >> get all of the things that we've written down and we'll kind of put it all together. Okay. >> Maybe not this week though, if that's okay. [snorts] >> Unless Rick, you really want it. I'll work on it. [laughter] >> Okay. Are we Can we move on? Did we go down the Oh, sorry. >> I was just curious about we um we mentioned it a couple of different times in here with the the code of conduct. Is there
058a time that we can go through or put that on our homework list to look at it to see if there are any? You know, we talk about behaviors all the time if we can narrow down. Is there anything that needs to be tweaked that we think of that to better address current behaviors or I mean because how many years now Carl was here when we did the code of conduct policy meeting I don't think >> it was once I got here um we could do that in a couple different ways. One we could just send it out as like a comment commentable Google doc kind of thing. [laughter] >> Um >> and we could bring it to the policy committee. >> Yeah. >> What do you think? >> Yeah. I just don't want to
059lose that one. I think that's not a bad idea. >> It's always wise to go back to that and and kind of, you know, get your perspective on that. Obviously, administrators will have a heavy perspective on like what's enforceable or what's the best way based on the kids that are coming in the door. >> Um, but yeah, that'd be great. Having a problem. could also be tied in with the behavioral um focus that we ti I don't know how admin are giving us their data this year. How often are when they're you know we can correlate some of the code of conduct with their data uh points. >> Yeah. Yeah. Next board meeting will be the big like fall you'll see their sips and stuff but it's we also do the updates right mid year
060and the end of the year. Um, I see that work. Looking at the code of conduct as part of that is is a multi-step, right? It'll probably take a couple different touch points here. So can I just the um regarding that um interestingly on on the additional data you gave us regarding this perceptions the high school actually does reasonably well and it it's it really stands out if you separate the high school middle school and clay is this under board goals and it seems like we're in a different like you have your own brought up the discipline concerns and how we're addressing that. >> I thought that I thought this was about board goals, >> but one of our board goals was tied to behaviors >> for I guess are you questioning something or are
061you just analyzing? >> Well, I'm I'm pointing out that Clay has the lowest scores when it comes to discipline. I mean, it's by far. I mean the high school actually if you look at it alone is not that much they're well over 67% agree that those policies are effective where you have 67% agree as compared to clay we have 13% >> what's the goal >> so the goal to when we look >> pardon me >> who's the survey taker >> perception school perception >> yes it's a staff parents >> uh this was teachers >> teachers just the staff. So when when we look at this goal of addressing this, is there is it going to be focused more towards clay as as as the area that we need that needs to be addressed in addressing
062this? >> I think that's a good question for Sarah at the next meeting because I assume they'll have a behavioral element to their continuous improvement plans. And we I think we've talked about this before too that generally we lump everybody in the same boat when we know it's not and that I don't like one section taking us all down or one one that should be um praised if they are doing well. I don't like I'm not a fan of lumping everybody together because that's not helping the end goal. If there's one section that we should be focusing on, it doesn't pay to I don't want to say waste time, but if somebody's already doing it well, maybe there's something we should be looking to them for to help us at the other schools. >> That's
063a good point. I wonder there's a way to separate that, but I don't know. >> So, I guess back to your point, Mike, I don't I'm not sure how we I know it's on here, but I don't know how that is our What's How do you write a goal to that? No, I I personally think that's a question for Sarah and her plan at the Clay. You've got the date now to back up to say Clay is struggling here. >> Well, it it kind of reminds me of when you would write a new rule because there are a couple people that are breaking the rule or whatever the expectation is and then it's like everyone gets punished for a couple people and you really should just be talking to them, right? So, It would be
064good to look at the differences between the three buildings and direct whatever it is we decided >> especially like when we're trying to keep I don't even say the morale and it goes both ways morale and the staff retention like when you're constantly throwing everybody into the same boat when we know that that's not the case that is it fair no I I get the solidarity and the you know we're one district, but I think this is a time that it needs to be broke down if we're going to fix any of these issues, especially when they're saying that we're the ones that are not keeping up our end of the bargain when it comes to the surveys, that they're not supported by us. So, and I think there's something too to looking at where
065things are working well and studying what are they doing and why is it working well. I would bet Sarah has some idea of like the pockets of exactly what you're saying. This is working, this isn't, or these this group of teachers really has it. And so she probably knows that piece and so we'll just have but it's it's difficult. It you have to remember you're in an open meeting. So it's not like she can say, "Oh, you know, the lending team is really doing the job, but my deposit team really stink." She's not going to be able to say that in here. So, um I'm sure she'll figure something out, but I didn't want to call out any grades. That's why I didn't. [laughter] >> But thank you. >> So, is that okay then, Mike?
066We'll we'll wait and we'll talk to we'll listen to what Sarah has to say next time. I'm sure >> or all of them because they're all going to be that was our director. >> But to his right point, it's Clay that has the most difficult. I mean when we look at the high school and play it a difference. >> Yeah. >> So then Nick and I will collate all this information. We'll get it back out to you and you guys can edit as you see fit. Good everyone's okay. We'll keep moving on. >> Okay. >> Um financial update. You did that already? >> Yeah. I'll just recap from the committee meeting that we had before this meeting. Um we recaped what fiscal year end June 30th 2025 looked like and where some additional monies were
067put. Um looking and we we've started the process not started continuing reviewing the process of the um district budget since the state budget has been passed and what the forecast looks like. Um, and then, you know, we're just going to continue to have the discussions at our finance committee meeting till we get to the annual meeting in October where the board, not at the annual meeting, but the regular meeting afterwards, will approve the 2526 district budget and the tax levy. So, we went over all of that in our finance committee meeting. That's all I have. >> Thank you. Uh, Emma, do you have anything for us? >> Maybe just a couple really quick things. I think a lot of the celebrations were already mentioned by you guys at the beginning of the board. So, that
068was really wonderful. Um, tomorrow's our first day with kids. We're really excited. The open houses went really well. They're well attended. Just talking to Molly in the front office and she just felt like it went really smooth this year and um saw a lot of smiles on on kids faces and families faces. But I did want to mention one maybe that one thing that didn't come up yet in our meeting and it's around our summer food program. So this is the first year we've is it ever or just recently that we >> No, this is the first year. >> First year. Okay. >> CO stuff, right? >> Oh yeah, during co That's true. Thanks. That's true. um they had a goal and I was talking to Cass to give me some numbers to see like
069did it meet their goal or did it surpass their goal and she said they felt like it was twice as good as they anticipated for the first effort. They had four staff that helped with the program and they served 22,246 meals um >> that were >> and that was grant related that was um through federal fund through federal fund. Too bad they can't find those federal funds to just [laughter] >> No. So, she was very pleased with it, assuming the funding sources and allowable costs continue, but we don't anticipate that changing in the next couple years, but you never know. Um, and I said, "What would you do different?" She said, "Probably just build on what we already did. You know, advertise even better." And >> automated um text reminders would be amazing. >> Oh,
070yeah. We um they really figured and when I've seen these before that it would kind of taper off. She said it didn't. It actually increased during the summer. you know, >> word of mouth, right? Um, and so we're really anticipating next year being even better. So, I thought that was a big celebration for the district. >> It's not just in our district >> or not in our school. >> Not in our school. >> Yep. So, um, yeah. So, um, just we're excited to get this year started. Um, come out to our watch our student athletes. We got games going. I think cross country was today. I don't know how they did. Uh, soccer, volleyball, swimming, football's this Friday. um first home game for Bar >> JB tomorrow. >> Yep. JB tomorrow. So, just like we
071talked about earlier, when you do [laughter] all busy, if you have a chance to participate or show up for any one or two events, um it really helps um all of us just support the kids and the staff that are involved. So, that's all I have for you. >> So, so what about the um welcoming back or we can go? >> So, where where would you show up? >> Whatever school you want to go to. >> Show up at one school. You're talking about tomorrow. >> Mhm. >> Yep. >> Yeah. Wherever you'd like to go. >> You know what time? >> 7:30 to 7:50. 3:15 to 3:30. >> Thanks. Okay. So then, uh, Nick, do you have anything? >> I do not. >> Okay. I do not either. You're sick of hearing from me. So,
072um, oh, just remember, we're going to take the tour of the upstairs if you'd like to. >> Yeah. >> Um, so then we'll just take a motion. Motion to adjurnn. >> Second. All in favor say I. Opposed. Motion. >> Is anybody interested in
