like to call the Germantown School District Board of Education meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. on April 28th here at district office. Uh if you could please stand for a pledge of allegiance, a brief moment of silence to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [clears throat] >> Uh, one a official meeting notification. Dr. Castro. >> Yeah. Uh public notice of all meetings have been given by communication from the superintendent's office to the public to those news medias who have filed a written request for such a notice and to the northwest now Milwaukee journal Sentinel Express News and Westbend Daily News. Public notice has also been posted in all schools throughout the district and on
the Germantown school district website. >> Thank you. B roll call. Mr. Barney >> here. >> Barney is here. Both >> here. Pollock >> here. >> Warrior >> here. >> Utech >> here. >> You here. >> Uh item three, election of board officers. So this uh always happens at our first agenda. >> Motion. Sorry. Motion to approve agenda item two. >> Sorry, Mr. Voyer with this. >> Who with the first? >> Tom Barney. >> Yes. >> Mr. Barney with the first, Mr. Ber with the second. Any discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? I >> Any opposed? Hearing none, that passes. Sorry. Item three, election of board officers. This always um occurs the first board meeting of the the new board following the election. And we'll just go down the uh the list here. So three, election
of board officers, a president. Your a motion. >> I'd like to make a not a motion to nominate Russ Eward for board president. >> Second. Mr. Voy with the motion. Mr. Pollock with the second. Any discussion? I appreciate it. It's been the last two years I've I've been in this role and if the vote goes right here, I think I'll I'll gladly do it again uh as asked by the board members. So, thank you for allowing me that opportunity. Any further discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Hearing none, that passes. Be vice president. >> I nominate Jeff Voyer as vice president. >> Second. Mr. Los with the motion. Mr. Barney with the second. Any discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? I. >> Any opposed? Hearing none. That passes. C. Treasurer.
>> I nominate Michael Loath as treasurer. >> Second. >> Mr. Barney with the motion and Mr. Pollock with the second. You're locked back in, Mike, here. I think [laughter] >> I've been tight cast into the role since 2012 and Tom's been here the whole time [clears throat] with me. So, that's great. I appreciate that. And I'm the engineer and everyone knows that engineering is the same as accounting [laughter] and that's why I'm here. >> So, thank you. [clears throat] >> Awesome. Any further discussion hearing? None. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Hearing? None. That passes. >> D. Clerk. >> Make a motion to nominate Tom Barney as clerk. >> Second. >> Mr. Pac with a motion. Mr. Ber with a second. Any discussion? >> Yep. Thank you. Appreciate the support. >> Keep us
in line. >> I will try. >> It's the duties of the job. Any further discussion? All in favor? I. Any opposed? Hearing? None. That passes. And E CISO one delegate. I have a motion. Uh so [laughter] no, that's okay. >> Let me let me try something [clears throat] a little different. I'll make a motion to have the board president designate the CISA1 delegate after he's had a discussion with all board members. >> Second >> after I have a discussion with all board members or interested board members. >> Well, all board members >> just worried about >> it could be a >> we're going to run a walk in. So, uh for anyone in the audience, this is a little bit of a different role. It's it's actually part of a board outside of this regarding
CISA1. Um does a lot of work. Tracy's typically done that um in the last couple of years. He's graciously volunteered to do that. Uh I'm not asking for him to volunteer. Again, we do have a couple new members. I'm not sure if everyone knows what it all entails. So, if anyone would like to have a discussion around that, well, I can I'll go ahead and give a little [clears throat] detail. Um what this position now uh includes uh couple years ago not only was I the CISA1 delegate but I also served on the CISA1 board. So similar to this we'd meet every month uh you know that sort of thing. In this particular case this is a one-time uh attendance at their annual meeting. So it's similar to our annual meeting in the fall. In
this case, it's all of the CISO1 uh districts that come together and operates pretty similarly as far as different approvals. There's a meal, there's some uh networking [laughter] sales. It is there is uh and so it's it's basically a one night commitment. I don't recall exactly when it usually is. It's it's going to be within the next month or so because it is before the end of the school year. Um, but it's it's basically a one-time event. I will warn you, I can't recall the actual rotations, but in theory, could Germantown possibly be voted onto this board again? Possibly. I don't, you know, obviously that goes to the vote of all CISO reps, but um that just fair warning, but uh once again, it's on a rotation as far as who becomes eligible to be
on the board. I think anyone that takes it to really the interest there then too is to understand our CISA contracts, how CISA works. Uh you can probably help some of the rest of the board out with that or any community that has questions and our administrators here and we just approved two this evening. Well, finance approved two with a positive recommendation this evening. Um so [clears throat] understanding those better is probably a good part of the role of that. So, uh, you know, in lie of having private conversations just from a >> I I understand you're concerned about the possibility of a walking quorum, but I would see this as similar to um assigning committee chairs and committee members to a committee. This would be along those lines. You you could have those conversations
because that's your authority as board president. >> Um, so I could go that route. My my question would be is would one of the uh new board members want to volunteer for it or Tracy volunteer for it? >> And I think that's what I was >> Yeah. >> just going to >> Tracy, do you want to go over I mean maybe you're already aware what CISA is, what a CISA is. >> So it's a consortium um of of all of the different districts that fall within CISA 1. So, it's basically a a region or an area of Wisconsin. There's I forget how many, seven, eight. >> Oh, no. There's up to two. Wow. >> So, but basically the idea is that uh um you know, districts near us, but also I think the southeastern Milwaukee
area all are part of this. Um, and so, um, in this particular case, like I said, it's it's pretty similar to the annual meeting where they you you see a presentation of all of the the different, uh, work that CISA does, not only with our district, obviously, but everything else, all the other services that they offer because we don't necessarily contract with them for everything. Um, but then like I said too, you'll you'll sit at a table with with other uh board members from other districts. So, you'll get to to interact with them, have a chance to talk to them. Um, and like I said, it's it's ultimately there there are some items to vote on. It's I think it's a trying to think handful of items, but you know, it's it's one evening basically
is what it comes down to. Few hours depending on how long you talk and whatnot. But it's it's a good opportunity. You know, if if need be, I will do it once again. But it's it in all honesty, without joking around, it's a good opportunity to meet people from other areas. Um I think this is one of those positions that that other boards tend to lean on newer folks. So it's, you know, you're kind of jumping in the deep end with others, but then you also have more experienced board members as well dedicated to the CISO1 work that you'll get to meet and and create those contacts as well outside of this district. Well, if anyone wants to volunteer for it, I would make a nomination for that volunteer. Unsure if if that was a
good sale or not. [clears throat] >> Oh, I'll volunteer. Someone makes a motion. >> I'll make a motion for Richard. You >> second. >> Well, you made the motion. I second it. So, do we have to >> Oh, you uh Did we get that far? >> Yeah. >> I think we have an amendment. >> I don't think I acknowledged it, [clears throat] >> but he still made a motion, though. Okay. A motion is to >> nominate Richard U. >> Second. >> Jeff. >> Oh, I'm sorry. >> Okay. Um, everyone understands the amended the amendment to the motion is now Richard Hu to represent CIS1 as the C1 delegate. >> Any further discussion? >> Thank you, Richard. >> Yep. It was a free lunch. [laughter] No, >> I'm I'm happy to represent our district. So, thank
you for the opportunity. >> Awesome. Uh any further discussion hearing? None. All in favor of the amendment. >> I any opposed? Hearing none. The amendment [clears throat] passes. Uh we will now hear any um discussion on the amended motion which is for Richard. >> You know I do we have to vote this one down now because or >> No, because we amended it. >> So we we >> we approved the amendment and now we'll approve the amended motion. This is why I don't like amendments. >> Yeah, it gets it a little fuzzy, but we're approving the amendment, >> the amended motion, which is now due. >> Okay, so we're good. >> Any discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. >> Any oppose? That passes. Richard, you are locked in. Ready for the ride. Let's
do it. They will most likely ask you to serve at some point on their board. >> I warned them though. [laughter] >> Okay. item for um intern district administrator update Dr. Castro. >> Yeah, so the month of April we're in full swing. We just have a few updates for everyone. Uh the first one is this month we had Germantown sing which was rescheduled that took place last week. Um for those that don't know what it is. It's just an opportunity for all of our schools to come together where they each sing a song. They sing collectively as well. So I believe this year it was decades. So they sang together then they each had a decade to kind of sing. So neat opportunity to bring all the students together. Uh in addition to that, we
also had the community award celebrations which also took place last week. Uh the citizen of the year was Sandy uh Dobergowski. The business of the year was Bub's Irish Pub and the leadership Germantown award went to Lynn Gurgg. So that's who we had for that. And then finally, we also want to welcome our new two board members. We have Ann Utek and Richard U. uh welcome you guys to the board. We're excited to have you guys. It was nice getting to know you guys a little bit during the onboarding process. So, welcome and congratulations again. >> Thank you. >> Awesome. Thank you. Uh B uh president's report. I usually don't have one here, but this was simply here uh to welcome the two new members to the board. One, are you stepping up for a
new position, so that should be a fun time. >> Um no, we're we're really excited to have you both. I know there's some some different visions that are going to come forward. We're going to talk about some more of that this evening. I'm excited to start those conversations, kick those off um and kind of just bring another another uh fresh wind and approach. So, pretty exciting that way. Um we have both of our interm we have dual interm superintendent right now, Dr. Castro and Mr. Mizak. And uh mainly just want to point them out. I think most people are familiar with the two of you. um but to put a face with that. So I appreciate you stepping into that role because we have a need at this time but this administration we have our
four administrators here Katie Cole and Northf um our fantastic team. So I have all the confidence in the world we'll get through the end of the school year here and uh continue to move forward as the state motto would imply. So appreciate appreciate all of your help. Other than that I don't have anything with that. C student represent representative report. Come on. Oh, there she is. Welcome. This >> Okay, perfect. Amy Bell Elementary. Our character trait focus for April is courage. Throughout the month, we encouraged our students to try new things, speak up for what is right, and face challenges with confidence and perseverance. We looked forward for the to the Germantown Sings event on Tuesday, April 21st. Our fifth grade students performed at the Germantown Fieldhouse with fifth grade students across the district and
middle school high school choirs. This is always a special evening and our students were very excited to showcase their talents. We will wrap up the month with our singing book fair, our spring book fair during the week of April 27th. In addition, we will host our literacy night on Tuesday, April 28th. This is a wonderful opportunity for our families to celebrate reading together and enjoying engaging literacy activities as a family. MacArthur Elementary, it has been a delight to see our students embrace and model our character trait of the month, courage. At MAC, our kids are being courageous and trying new things, building independence, and stretch stretching beyond their comfort zones. At the start of the month, we introduced the courage challenge, encouraging students to take on something new on their own with support and planning
alongside their families. Across classrooms, it has been fun to see students leaning into this idea in both big and small ways, building confidence through risk-taking and reflection. Being courageous has naturally shown up in so many ways throughout our student activities. Our Germantown sings concert was a highlight with students in large performance that showcase not only their musical growth but also the courage it takes to perform in front of a large audience. Our upcoming talent shows and recent triyouts have provided meaningful opportunities for students to step up, share their strengths, and take risks in front of their peers. With Mr. Polls are leading the way. Students have completed the forward assessments and are now in the final stretch of the school year. With the weather turning, our PE classes have transitioned outdoors and students have enjoyed
multiple field trips and learning opportunities outside the classroom. We will also like to thank the MacArthur PTA for their continued support, including the return of the golden guest lunches, a long appreciated tradition. County Line Elementary. We have had a busy end to March and April from spring break to successfully completing Ford and Ames testing. Our students have enjoyed many engaging and fun community field trips that connect learning beyond the classroom. Our PTA continues to be a strong partner planning events such as board game night, booster nights, and jersey mics and so much more to support our community school community. Our PTA auction was a huge success. Thank you PTA. We are excited to be here tonight to show showcase the learning and growth that has taken place throughout the school year. Rockfield Elementary. We are
excited to focus on courage this month. One way to think about courage is choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary. What better way to encourage and celebrate courage than bring back the Rockfield talent show. We had over 40 students auction for the upcoming show. Another way we practice courage is by encouraging students to use their words when faced with challenges. It is not easy when things don't go as planned or students feel wronged, left out by a peer. Therefore, all staff support our students to find the strength to work through the challenge. We have seen so much growth in our students as they have worked through sharing their feelings as well as listening to others and having the courage to take responsibilities for mistakes. Kennedy Middle School. The
Kennedy Middle School successfully transitioned back from spring break and has entered the final quarter of the school year with a strong focus on student effort growth and preparation for next steps. Particularly for eighth grade students preparing for high school. Staff continues to emphasize academic habits, perseverance, and student support to ensure a strong finish the year. Forward exam makeup testing is ongoing through April 23rd. Academic support structures such as homework club continue to show positive impact with over 500 assignments completed by students in a structured supported supportive environment. Our eighth grade students continue to finalize and publish the books that they wrote and illustrated for their second grade buddies. They will be sharing those with them this month. Student engagement opportunities remain strong throughout the clubs such as math counts, science club, key club, student council,
and Mesa. The school continues to promote a positive culture through its student of the month program, recognizing students across all grade levels for responsibility, kindness, and academic effort. Congratulations to our Kennedy Crusader, Dish Buckley, who was elected middle school licensed to the 2026 2027 Wisconsin HOSA Executive Board. We look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish in this leadership role. Our community staff shoutouts initiative remains in place to strengthen connections between families [clears throat] and staff and celebrate contributions. Upcoming events and key dates. April 24th, no student, no school for staff for students. Staff professional development. June 5th, 8th grade dance. June 8th, 8th grade promotion ceremony at Germanone High School. June 9th, last day of school for grades 67, no school for eighth grade. Student activities and athletics. Spring athletics are underway, including
track with multiple meets scheduled throughout April and May. Best Buddies just had a wonderful, wonderfully successive bowling outing. KMS just had their variety show with a multitude of talented students showcasing their talents. A wide range of extracurricular opportunities continues to support students involvement, belonging, and skill development. operations and safety. Continued emphasis on safe and efficient morning dropoff procedures with adjustments and reminders to families to ensure student and staff safety. Structured expectations for after school events and student supervision has been reinforced. Building procedures including attendance protocols and health room guidelines continue to support consistent operations. Eighth grade eighth grade transition activities. Planning is underway for promotion activities including the ceremony and end of year events. Communication has been provided to families regarding expectations, timelines, and logistics to ensure a smooth transition to high school. Overall, Kennedy
Middle School remains focused on maintaining a positive school culture, supporting student achievements, and ensuring a safe, structured operations as the school year concludes. Germanone High School GHS students are trading in the ACT preACT for AP testing as the two-week testing window opens up for the first week of May. Students continue to prepare for these tests with the hopes of demonstrating their hard work throughout the year and obtaining college credits. Graduation preparation has started for the class of 2026. As we prepare for nearly 300 seniors to walk around, walk across the stage on that day, we continue to look back fondly on their contributions to the Germantown High School community. They have been part of so much positive change and we know the impact they have will lo will laugh last long after they have graduated.
Our spring sports are off to a tremendous start. students continue to excel both inside and outside the classroom, demonstrating our students commitment to academic and human excellence. Congratulations to the choir students across the district as they participated in our Germantown sings concert. Students from all schools in the district showcased their talent and an incredible performance. Thank you to all of the educators that took part in our or in organizing this night and preparing students. Special congratulations to our own Miss Lawson for her work with the Germaton Choir program this year. Good luck to all of our students competing at the DECA Nationals. Our DECA and FBLA programs continue to produce outstanding results and we cannot be more proud of the continued growth of our students. >> Awesome. Thank you very much. We'll move on to
D County Line School Elementary School presentation, Miss Schultz. And uh I think you have some some fun guests with you. >> Yes, absolutely. Thank you. Thank you. Well, thank you so much for having us tonight. We're really excited to be here. My name is Mrs. Schultz and I'm the principal of County Line. and then we'll go on to the next page. So, these are a few of our staff and our special students that are here tonight. Um, so Miss Carrera Frank couldn't be here, but she'll be joining us virtually. Uh, Miss Farad's here, and then the stars of the show, Thomas and Lily, are here as second graders to show off some of their great work. All right, so we're here tonight because we're excited to kind of share with you um our goals as
county school. So, not only are these goals county lines, but they're also every other elementary school. So, we're all working as one system turn towards one goal. So, you will see our goals both are around ELA. So, really thinking more about that literacy and how we're improving student outcomes for all students on that state report card in the end. And so, two um clear ways that you're going to see tonight that we have done that is through what's called a BLT. And no, it's not a sandwich. Um, it's our building leadership team. So, Miss Farad and Miss Frank are big parts of that. And they work together in PLC's, which are professional learning communities. So, we're not only our students growing, but our staff are growing too alongside. So, a little bit about our building
leadership team at County Line. That's our team picture right there. So, our building leadership team helps ensure that we're thinking about our improvement efforts. Um, here are our goals. How are we working together as a system towards these goals and empowering all of those staff members there to then bring that into not only their grade level teams but in the classrooms each and every day. And so we look at how are we working on our small group teaching with students? How are we looking at teacher clarity? This year was our big one. How are we using data to help uh inform our instruction and then leading to student success. [clears throat] So today you're going to hear a little bit about teacher clarity, which has been a really big goal districtwide as our leadership team
has focused on that with a lot of our 15-day challenges. And so um Mrs. Frank wanted to talk a little bit about how that is living in her classroom. And so we really dug into this with those professional development days and then bringing it into the classroom. um bringing our instruction around that teacher clarity and then how are we also bringing that in those professional learning communities. So Mrs. Frank is a pivotal part in that. Hello, my name's >> I'm going to go back and record. Um, she couldn't be here tonight, but she did record for us because she's been a strong leader that's really bringing this not only into her team meetings, those professional learning communities, but with the students that are here right off to show you how that impacts student learning. Hello,
my name is Cararissa Frank and I teach second grade at County Line Elementary. I'm sorry that I can't be there in person tonight, but I am thankful for the use of technology that I'm able to tend this way. I am an active member of our school's building leadership team. We have a leadership role within the school and we really strive to get the whole school community together around our continuous learning to drive student success. During our March BLT meeting, we read an article that focused on teacher clarity. More importantly, what do we want students to learn? This article paired well with our professional development sessions this year, which also focused on teacher clarity. After our PD sessions, my grade level team and I focused our teacher clarity around the Wisconsin state standards and prioritized what
we want students to learn. We then take the standards and put them into studentfriendly language using IAN statements and success criteria for our students. For tonight's presentation, I am going to show you what this looks like from both a teacher lens and a student lens. So last month during our wonders whole group reading lessons, we were learning about figurative language, more specifically simileies. Students learned that simileies compare two unlikely things using the words like or as. We learned that simileies enhance our writing and make reading more engaging. We read passages and identified simileies in our text during our whole group reading lesson. And then in my classroom after our whole group reading lesson, students break out into small student learning centers that are centered around the priority standards. While students are working in their small
reading center, I am working with a differentiated group at my back table. So one reading center that week focused around simileies. During this center time, students were able to take their whole group learning from the we do stage and transfer it into the student learning center, the I do phase. One independent reading center during our figurative language unit was centered around simileies. So the Wisconsin teaching standard that that would fall under would be L2.3 demonstrate understanding of figurative language word relationships and nuances in word meanings. From that I broke down two I can statements to put into that learning center. I can understand simileies in my reading. I can use simileies in my writing. So the students used their I can statements. They looked at the teacher model that I had in the bucket to
[clears throat] use for success criteria and they produced their own work. I had two different examples for students to use and they could pick which one they wanted. Now I'm going to turn the floor over to Lily and Thomas. Lily and Thomas are both in my second grade class and they are outstanding students as well as hardworking and kind. They are going to showcase their finished product from their small group reading center. Thank you. All right. So now Lily and Thomas and Miss Farad is also going to support us in showing off all of their hard work. So they're so brave. So are you ready? Okay. Take it away. Hello. >> My name is Thomas and I am in Miss Frank's second grade class. >> Hi, my name is Lily and I am also in
Miss Frank's class. >> Tonight we are excited to show you our finished simile center work. Our learning targets that help direct our simile center work. I can understand simileies in my reading >> and I can use simileies in my writing. >> During my reading centers, I work with a small group of students of group of students. We work on writing tasks that go along with our rating lessons. Every day after centers, we get to showcase our work to our peers. We love our centers and we're very proud of our work. >> Here is my finished sim rainbow. Using simileies helped make my descriptive writing come alive and allowed me to be creative and use descriptive words. The sky is as blue as the ocean. The grass is as green as a leprechaun. The sun is
as yellow as a coin. A basketball is as orange as a marker. A heart is as red as a shirt. Here are my finished similar cards. In class, we got to pick someone to write about. For tonight, I created similar cards for Miss Schultz, Miss Sy, and my mom. Miss Schultz is as smart as a scientist. Miss Rarity as is as colorful as a butterfly. My mom is as nice as a superstar. Wow. >> Good job. You guys have one more line. >> Yeah. >> Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoyed our presentation on our learning. >> So, hi everybody. I'm Jackie Farity. I'm the reading specialist at County Line and I am really lucky that I get to be a part of our PLC's that happen as well as our BLT team. That's
redundant, but as well as our BLT. Um, something that we've been really practicing throughout this year and practicing is analyzing student data, making sure that this isn't just planning time, but that we have data from the students that's actionable, that we can be responsive to what they're doing in the classroom. Another part of our PLC is sharing in our expertise and responsibility. We have a lot of knowledge amongst our staff and it's just an opportunity for everyone to come together and share the things that they're doing really well and then just refining those teaching strategies. So, you'll see in here I was working with the fifth grade team during our PLC. So, I have our three fifth grade teachers. We are also lucky to have a fifth grade student teacher with us and then one
of our special education teachers as well. Um, one of the things that we were working on this year in our PLC was taking a look at a need that the fifth grade team was finding. So, they were noticing that with their phonics lessons, the students were having a lot of success with their reading of the patterns, but they were still kind of struggling to make that connection in their spelling and writing. Um, so I was able to be a part of that PLC and say, "Hey, I've got a strategy for you." And the fifth grade team was wonderful at taking it and running with it. So through our PLC work, we identified that there was a need to help bridge that gap between the reading and the spelling. Then we were able to learn a
new strategy that I was able to teach to the whole team, which is called phone graphing mapping. It's essentially just a nice bridge to make that learning really concrete for our students and break down the individual steps in the spelling. Then the fifth grade team was able to identify specific students that they wanted to do this work with and implement it on their own with a little guidance from me. This is again just like a really nice way to see this in action. It wasn't a ton of extra work for everyone, but it was the right kind of work. So you will see in these pictures, Mrs. Suba's fifth grade class was taking this on. It was of course on Valentine's Day, so naturally she's wearing a bright pink wig. [clears throat] Um, the fifth
grade students at this time were practicing our controlled vowel patterns. And so she decided that her whole class could use a review on this. So she did this as a whole group lesson, which allowed her to be able to teach the process to all of her students. And then she's able to pull small groups that really need a little bit of extra practice with this task. And it was also really nice for Mrs. Suba because she has a student teacher this year and it was a very cool opportunity for her student teacher to see that a really good veteran teacher still can take these risks at learning new things, feel a little vulnerable, maybe not have all of the answers right away, but be able to kind of dig down into this and show her
student teacher that we all are learning all of the time. >> Thank you. Yeah, just to speak to Miss Far and her supports this year have been really great. and last year with our new curriculum that rolled out, she just went all hands in and continued that continuous improvement with our staff. She's built those relationships with the staff and students that can show that vulnerability. So, I speak largely to her joining those teams and really um having that ability to support our teachers with instructional clarity, but then also then you can see how that comes down to student clarity. They were so clear about what their task was, but what the learning was behind it, right? So they knew they were learning about simileies. So that standard is so important because that brings clarity to
our teachers that then brings clarity to our students. So it's just that overall arching piece that we are all learning here together and we're going to all be successful together and to ensure that we have improving outcomes for every single student here at Germantown. So thank you. That's all for us today, but thanks to Lily and Thomas and Miss Far being here tonight and be ready. ANY [applause] questions for the county line comments? >> Questions or comments? >> I'll comment. Uh when I was in grade school, I was afraid of public speaking. I tell this to all students and uh I would have been scared out of my mind to come and talk to the school board. So, thank you for coming tonight. You both did a wonderful job and I can tell you practiced
your reading before you got here. So, thank you for that and uh hope to see you again uh in the future in higher grades. >> Awesome. Thank you. >> All right. >> Awesome. Thank you very much for coming. >> Um F or sorry E. Uh we did have one request and I appreciate that. Uh Mr. Pollock reached out after the recent weather events and asked for an update on this. So Mr. Lord is here with us e April weather event. >> Yes. Thank you. All right. We'll go um just I plan on just going school to school. Um it's really not a a mega list luckily. Uh but April is not done yet. Uh Amy Bell up to this point. A we had a roof drain. Uh this is all mainly the majority of all
this. I don't have the exact dates, but it's that uh main week between the I think the 12th summer was it the 12th 12th and 15th or 16th and we had the four major days of rain that I believe mainly prompted this um roof drain above room 111 had a leak uh which affected a few ceiling tiles. Um this a work order was put in. It was not a lot of water. Um water was picked up. A work order was put in for the roof drain repair. Um, it was repaired, but the seal on it was uh shot. So, we actually re we had purchased a a new seal set for it. Uh, received it and I want to say it was finished today, but I knocked it out there to confirm. Uh, but it
is definitely going to be wrapped up uh shortly. Uh, county line, we had water intrusion in the library and art room. Uh, both spaces uh had the water intrusion on the wall side adjacent to the courtyard. Um due to [clears throat] the volume of the rainfall, the catch basin within the courtyard was unable to keep up with the drain rate demand. Uh this is what we faced back in August uh during that torrential downpour, the record rain. Um same thing happening there. We did look into it uh as far as having clogs andor restrictions within the uh catch basin, which there were not. We checked it again on this route. Um we are continuing to look forward on what what that space might become and what maybe redirecting some of that drainage might look like.
Um but as of right now it is set um to the way that it is supposed to be set. So um again I think it's just that all of the rainfall with where the water table was at uh those are the two most susceptible rooms to water intrusion on that side. Um let's see like staff per performed the necessary water extraction in both areas uh and then equipped both both rooms with fans and dehumidifiers um within the morning. Uh this again was not as bad as August, but we did have intrusion. Uh MacArthur, no recorded leaks or water intrusion. Um Rockfield had no recorded leaks or water intrusion. Kennedy, we had a roof drain leak uh above the maintenance garage. Uh no damage was done. We actually have a catch basin in there. So uh
the amount that was coming in was not an overload, but it it found its way to the drain. So that worked out well. Uh we have since uh replaced the seal in that roof drain. uh Germantown High School, minor flooding in roughly a half inch to one inch in the orchestra pit uh within the PAC. Uh the subp pump tripped out uh sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Um our staff was monitoring the pump through Friday night uh during the majority of the heavy rains just to make sure that we didn't relive um any sump pump issues. Um and actually the uh Heather and the PHC staff uh they were checking on Saturday as well uh just because they are in that space and there were no issues. So uh luckily it
was shortlived. Uh what we had found out is uh the pump was tripped out uh due to a connection in the controller relay uh which was triggering the switch to jump to the open or off position. Um it did. We had found this out because it tripped out two more times after. Um and essentially uh [clears throat] what we had come up with conclusion is the the wire connections within that relay because the pump was running for so many days in a row um that the those miny minuscule vibrations loosen them up just enough where it could uh find that disconnection and reconnection to to trip it. So uh that has since been repaired uh and tested and is still working as of up to today. Um, we also had a third floor roof drain
leak um above the hallway. This is a 4x4 puddle. Uh, couple of ceiling tiles needed replacement. Um, the roof drain seal has been repaired. I do want to say with these roof drain repairs, um, I always like to highlight, you know, that these roofs are not meant to hold water. Uh, so the drains are typically the most susceptible to, uh, letting water intrusion happen. So, um it's not like they were all faulty, but it does happen because they they they're not made for that purpose um or for that amount of rainfall, I should say. Um I will move into districtwide uh just a few um issues, not issues, but things that had happened. We had pretty much every elementary had playground wood chip washouts uh and bed wash outs. Uh we're working on repairing all
of those and getting them back up to getting it back up to par. Uh we had minor tree and limb falls uh that needed cleanup. There might be a couple areas that are left, but for the majority any bigger things were taken care of by now. Um and we also ran into a few short-lived power outages. Um mainly between Kennedy and Rockfield. Um again, they were fairly short and I don't believe I think we didn't even have school when we had the power outage, so it worked out well. Um, and one happened overnight, uh, but was fixed prior to the morning. So, um, and just a couple of positives all all inclusively, I wanted to mention that all the roof drains were cleared out, uh, prior to any of the April rains. So, I wanted
to just kind of give a little kudos to the my staff for taking care of those PMS first thing in the spring because it is very important after the winter for these purposes to do so. Um and I would my all-around takeaway is that um our roofs have been in properly maintained or in good existing condition. So uh any questions here? >> So that crazy rain that we got last August when the orchestra pit flooded. Yep. >> Did we not catch that issue with that sump pump or was it just get the water out and dry it and we bypassed it? Uh that was the fact that we did not have in the amount of water um that was quite a bit more than what we even received on this last one. This one was
just incremented a little bit more. Uh but the amount of that water pushing on the water table uh had tripped out that subp pump completely. Um and unfortunately it didn't take any time at all for it to you know luckily we got it before it was a fishbowl. But um ultimately you know that that's the scary part. So um after this one we do have an alarm on the panel itself. It's a pretty nice setup. Uh but if nobody's there, um nobody's aware. So I I have a couple I reached out to a few different companies for a really low scale but um something that we could trust as far as like a relay that sends a text to our phone or you know email saying, "Hey, >> pumps out, you know, [clears throat] um
no power." So I think that's something we would even be able to do inhouse >> like a moisture sensor. >> Definitely. [clears throat] There's there's a lot of >> I just want to make sure it's something that we can trust and is, you know, compatible with that certain. But um yeah, that one it it really wasn't bad and honestly it gave us the opportunity to give that a full cleanup again while they were working in it and setting it up. So >> cool. Thank you. >> Yep. >> Any other questions? Anything in this building? >> Surprisingly not. I shouldn't say surprisingly. Um, but I don't have a, you know, I don't have a lot of shingled roofs and I was expecting a little bit of something, but um, no, I think where we sit here,
we're actually, we have a pretty good pitch on every direction and everything drained out properly. So, >> okay, good. Great. Thank you. >> Yeah, >> thank you for the update. >> You bet. >> Thank you. >> Um, village of Germantown lean report. Uh we'll start with parks and wrecks. Mr. Polly, >> thank you. Park and wreck met April 15th. Just a few items to note. Uh the firewoods park shelter, there's going to be some reinforcement of the posts and they're also installing some new LED lights to improve visibility at night. Work should be completed before July 4th. Uh some work on the baseball fields over at Kinderberg and Hopstraasa are scheduled for the completion. Uh uh some of that work should be completed by the end of this month. And then general maintenance on all
of the pickle ball and tennis courts once the temperatures are high enough. So I don't know if they're actually out yet. Um but uh they're going to be doing some maintenance, but nets for basketball, tennis, pickle ball are set up in late March. Park restrooms are open. Start visiting the park since they're playing some ball. Uh summer 2026 brochures are out and available. Registration has already begun. The family glowwalk over at Kinderberg Park is May 1st. visit the village website for more information. And uh as of a couple days ago, I believe they were still searching for a senior center coordinator. So, um just those couple of items from the April 15th meeting. >> Awesome. Thank you. Um so, these three positions are um appointed within here. Uh the village does I believe it's a
two-year two-year term, I think. So, I don't do you know when yours is up. Is it this year? or is it? >> I honestly have to double check. >> Okay. Well, just communicate with us on that and then if it's something you want to continue, obviously you're more than welcome to, but we can always see if anybody else would want to step up in there. It's a good experience. Uh gets you out in the village, those types of things. Um and really gets a little broader understanding of what's going on and they generally let us know about rental issues. So, it's a good way to communicate back into the administrative team those types of things. So appreciate that. Um Mr. Voyer with the EDC, Economic Development Commission. >> Sure. So the EDC did not meet
due to the election and there's a little bit of a restructuring going on. As of right now, we are set to meet on May 11th. I will follow up if we do meet or if that gets pushed. >> Fantastic. Thank you. Myself on the planning commission. Um we did meet April 13th. there were no agenda items of significant um value or concern [clears throat] um to the school district. Usually in this I'll bring forward if there's any housing or residential development that may impact or even just general development that may impact um either our tax tax levy of some sort or the citizens and also our enrollment. Um but yeah, we had none of those type of topics um on this particular agenda. So that's quick and easy. Five citizen comment. I do have one.
Kyle, not sure. Please come up. We got three minutes. Just don't be too mean. >> I'm [clears throat] not going to talk very long. >> No. Yeah, you're fine. >> I still hate public speaking. So, um I'm going to try to get this over with quick, but uh I'm here because um one, I'm a special education teacher at the high school. I'm also the head boys basketball coach and I'm a proud uh community member of the Germantown uh district. Um so I I love being here. Uh moved my family here almost two years ago um because we wanted to be in this district. Um, and I think I was uh put up as a spokesperson for some of my um the staff members at the at the school along with a lot of athletic coaches
and our student athletes. uh just with the concerns about um the logo and maybe change changing of the branding um just because of the uh kind of rich tradition that we have here of of the Gtown and kind of what it looks like. But um there weren't a lot of from the high school point of view as far as the coaches and um the athletes that I've talked to not a lot of favorable um they didn't they didn't really like it. I guess that's a better way to say it. the the the new logo. Um so I guess we're asking to hopefully have some more discussion about it and maybe um some more clarity because we don't really know what it's all about. Um I wasn't involved I was involved in a focus group which
is great cuz I I like designing logos and things like that. Um but at the same time I I didn't really know what the meeting was about and I it would be nice to have some more clarity um and just some more discussion among really the student athlete should really have a lot of the say in this I think as well uh before we kind of change anything um because as we know like I've been coaching almost 20 years now at the high school level and um believe it or not whether you're a high school athlete or just a regular kid you want to look good Right. And um we've all heard the saying when you look good, you play good. Right. That saying. So like um I think it's really important for um them
to have a say like our student athletes and our you know our coaches and our our staff because I think there's some people that are worried that some traditions and some things are going to go by the wayside if if uh we don't have those discussions. And really that's it. >> No. Great. I appreciate you sharing those concerns. Thank you. >> Thank you guys. >> Stick around and there's some agenda items that might interest you. Sure. >> Um I have no no one else signed up at this time. Is anyone else in the the audience that wants to speak once, twice? See none. Item six, um consent agenda. I was frontloaded with the potential need to pull one item out just from um potential abstension point. Um Mr. Baron would be the best way to
pull one item. >> Can we tell me which one you >> uh F donations? >> So I will make a motion to approve consent ag consent agenda items A through E. >> Second. Okay, Mr. Barney with the motion. Mr. P with a second. A through E can uh consist of A, approval of March 17th meeting minutes, 2026 meeting minutes. B, approval of March 26, 20 March 26, 2026 meeting minutes open session only of close session. C, approval of uh April 21st, 2026 meeting minutes open session only of close session. D, approval of teacher resignations. an E, approval of teacher contracts. Any discussion? Um, Dr. Castro, do we have any additions that wouldn't be covered in the personnel update in regards to resignations or contracts? >> Uh, the only other one was the music update, but
the music update that we gave for the um for FTE within personnel. Are you referring to? >> Yeah. So, we have resignations and teacher contracts on. Are there any additions to those lists that weren't covered in the personnel committee? >> Um, there was one that was added that wasn't in the personnel committee for an addition for a hire, and that was uh Corey uh Welch, who's going to be doing business education at the high school. >> Okay. Uh and then I did see a significant amount of contracts, what I call significant amount, >> all set for next year. This is probably the earliest I've started to see those types of things trickle in. I don't know if you could speak to that. >> Yeah. So, yeah, you'll see a number of contracts for this upcoming
year. You'll see one that was related to a teacher termination. Uh, yeah, but we were ahead of ahead of it during the process. We did also implement this year our spark hire, which was our screener, [clears throat] which allows us to screen many more candidates up front. Um, which obviously gave us the advantage of getting our candidates in quickly and finding the right people and securing them. So, I believe most of these actually were all secured in one week, which I was pretty happy about. So, >> great. And I did notice um the majority weren't base rate. >> Yep. >> So, that leads me to believe we're getting experience. >> Yep. Yep. They're all based Yeah, they'll all be based off of their experience. So, depending how many years they're coming to us with. Well,
>> great work. I'm glad we're ahead of the the game on that. Any further discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. [clears throat] Any opposed? Hearing? None. A through E pass. I'll hear a motion for F. Move to approve the donations. >> Second. >> Mr. Pollock with a motion. Mr. Ber with a second. Any discussion? I know M Darney probably has one. Um, I'm going to abstain from discussion on this item because there are Kiwanas donations and being president to Kiwanis, there's probably not a conflict since I'm elected here, but >> yeah, >> I'll uh I'll abstain from discussion on it. >> Okay. Any others? >> Yep. Uh I will abstain from this one as well. I am on the board for the Kennedy Middle School PTA and we have one donation coming in
um for that. I actually wrote the check for it. [laughter] Well, there you go. Well, we appreciate it. Thank you very much. >> Um, as a side note, Mr. T and Mr. You are both um maintaining their positions on their perspective PTA. My understanding if any of that changes, obviously, correct me. Um, so we might see some abstensions in this area regarding that um as we continue to move forward. But I think that's just to be transparent and open for the community to understand those dueling rules. Um, with that, I will ask the question Tom usually does ask. Can we get a uh reading of the donations? >> Yeah, absolutely. Uh so the first one is Turnkey Solutions, which donated $1,000 to the Germantown High School Robotics Club. We had Prolle GE Waca donated $500
to Germantown High School Robotics Club. We had the Kiwanis Club of Germantown donate $750 to the Germantown High School Robotics Club. We had an anonymous donor donor of $300 which was sent to the Germantown High School Robotics Club. We had a Kiwanis Club of Germantown $250 which was donated to uh Germantown High School Palms. We had Life Church donate $650 to the Germantown High School uh soap club. We had 3N2 baseball booster club donate $400 to the Germantown baseball for rentals of indoor facilities. We had Rockfield PTA uh which donated two new picnic tables uh for the school valued at approximately $800. We had a Warhawk band booster donate $799.98 which went to purchasing two microphones for the Germantown High School band. We had Kennedy Middle School PTA donate $1,528 which was to rering archery
bows for Kennedy Middle School. We had Germantown Athletic Booster Club donate $3,095 which was for the purchase of four hurdle carts for the Germantown High School track team. We had the Germantown Athletic Booster Club donate $1,500 which was in the increments of $500 for each the Germantown High School boys soccer team for the Palms and then the girls track team. We had Amy Bell PTA donate $1,580.74 classroom purchases such as indoor recess kits, whiteboards, and partitions. We also had Amy Bell PTA uh purchase not to exceed $2,000 for Camp Mini County field trip fees for Amy Bell students in May. >> Fantastic. >> Great. >> Um just seeing those last two on >> Yes, I was going to try and interject, [laughter] but yeah. No, I also need to abstain because I am president of
the Amy Bell PTA and was on the decision-m process for those donations. Okay, >> thank you. Um uh we have a motion, we have a second. There was the discussion. Any further discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? The remainders of I >> I for [laughter] um any No. Any uh no and abstensions? >> Three. >> All right. That passes still close. [laughter] Thank you very much. >> I don't want it to get to the point where we take donations one by one. >> Yeah, I I don't think so, but I do appreciate the the transparency of that. So, thank you very much. Um, we'll move into the committee's portion of the meeting. Seven, buildings and grounds. Mr. Pollock is probably got the floor here for a while. Sure. Uh, uh, first off, buildings and grounds.
We did meet April 14th. uh went through our normal work order completion reports and also got an update on the cabinet heater that was installed over at the Rockfield Elementary School entryway. Uh I think there's a lot of appreciation for that basically because of the noise and the fact that it actually works. Now uh under our new business piece, we did discuss uh the GHS elevator number two modernization. Won't spend a lot of time on that because Mr. LO will have this later because we did pass it on to the finance committee for their approval. Long story short, uh elevators are expensive. It's broken. We need it. Uh and al ultimately we did get uh several several meaningfree requests for for the work to be done. Uh ultimately, if the board approves this, it will
be added to the 25 26 capital capital capital improvement projects uh within the 25 to 35-year capital improvement plan. Uh we also discussed the ghs and KMS grease trap replacements. Um so, uh this piece is for both of the schools, both of the kitchen areas. Uh it's important to uh have a system that filters out or removes the grease properly so uh uh we don't contaminate stuff and also that it just everything else basically works on it. I would recommend if you're really interested in grease traps, take a look at our packet from the meeting. There's a nice diagram. It's way more involved than one would think on the surface. Um ultimately what we did at the board level uh was uh to uh uh approve the project. We actually amended the original motion that
was suggested to take a look not only at PBC but also um uh if I recall corre stainless steel is what I thought. Um so ultimately uh we did approve that motion and and uh it would go to the finance committee as well. That is all I have for building the grounds. >> All right. Thank you. Eight. Uh teaching and learning committee and I believe Mr. P's going to take that. >> Yeah, we met April 14th as well. Uh so during the teaching and learning committee we we got our uh March 20th 26 p prof professional development day update. Um actually one of the topics that was presented to us uh by our county line friends was on teacher clarity. That's that's what a lot of the focus was in that March event. um also
discussed was formative assessment uh as well and how it is important and essential to the PLC's that we learned about and that are linked to understanding by design that you saw within our presentation. We also got an update on the curriculum review process focused on K through2 science, K through2 social studies, 9 through 12 mathematics and 9 through 12 English language arts. um and highlighted how this works directly to support our ultimate strategic goal to identify priority academic standards, establish universal curricula, and refine assessment practices to improve student results. Uh we also got an update from Miss Cole on the counseling model review that also occurred during the March professional development day. Uh they began evaluating the current counseling model and how it fits within the model provided by DPI. Uh all of the counselors
utilize that an assessment tool called the school counseling program assessment to look at current practices, determine what's in place with evidence and find out and discover if anything's missing so that we can improve our overall process. And lastly, uh for teaching and learning under new business, we discuss the English 11 UBD stage one and the resources involved with this. Uh this also uh uh some of the work was also held on oops I copied the wrong thing in there. Basically what what this is is uh a a new class that that's being worked on to bridge the gap between English 10 and higher level English classes within the high school. Ultimately, what uh the the uh committee decided was to move with uh or created a motion that we move here today with a positive
recommendation to approve the English 11 stage 1 UBD uh and English 11 resources as presented at the committee. Uh that comes forward with a positive recommendation. Does not require a second. I hear any discussion. >> I just had a quick question looking through the books and um titles that were on there. How did those titles get chosen? Were they chosen by staff or was it part of a curriculum that was already put forth? >> So part of them there are some classes that um will inevitably be reduced as a result of having this English 11 class because there's electives that kids probably won't access anymore. So some of them are existing pieces of literature that our teachers have already used. Um but in addition to that, what they're looking for are books and short stories
that meet the curricular objectives that they have outlined in the course. So the teachers were um the driving force behind selecting all of those resources um and identifying which ones would work best to to meet those curricular goals. >> Okay. Thank you. Any further questions? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. >> Any oppose? >> Hearing none. That passes and I believe that is >> that is it from teaching and learning >> nine personnel committee. >> Hey everybody. [laughter] >> We we also met April 14th. Um, in addition to receiving our usual reports and updates on teacher resignations, contracts and staffing update, we also discussed uh revisited really the the 2627 teacher staff planning uh specifically to music only if everybody recalls. We carried that over from our March meeting so that uh Dr. Castro
could go and meet with the music department K through 12 and discuss in more detail what their needs are, ask for clarification and ultimately settled on uh an appropriate amount of overall FTE uh for this uh for this area for this department uh in planning for the uh school year. Ultimately, I'd bring forward with a positive recommendation to approve the tentatively proposed K through2 music department staffing plan. Comes forward with a positive recommendation. Does not require a second. Any discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? >> Hearing none. That passes. And that is all from the personnel committee. >> You had the most committees. Mike might have the longest. uh finance committee. Uh Mr. Lo, >> yes, the finance committee met at 5:15 this evening here at the district office. Um
the whole board was here and I'm thankful they were, including our two new board members, Richard U and and UTEK. Um so, as is often the case, we're not going to the the meeting lasted almost two hours. We're not going to replay the whole meeting. So, we are going to do the Cliff's notes version here. Everyone likes to hear me say that. So, uh we will move go ahead and and move forward here. Did I say the video will be up in about two days of the the meeting? So, full board item 10A, committee meeting updates. Uh we uh did consent of vouchers and Britney answered a few questions that we had full full board item uh 10A updates again uh financial series number seven uh by Robert W. Beard uh Michael Clark spoke to
us about debt. There was no action required for that this evening. Also under updates, uh, monument signs update. We were looking to, uh, standardize all the signs with all the school names, and that wasn't really possible due to various village codes and things. So, that's been taken off uh, the to-do list for now. We'll maybe get back to it sometime in the future. Also on updates, uh, Britney's variance report. Next item is full board item 10B, uh, death defeasence. Also, Michael Clark, uh, spoke to us on that. And um the idea here is uh if we uh put a little more money into the uh referendum debt, we can reduce our payments at the end. And that was about u 1.9 million, I think, for this evening. So, we have a motion to the board
with a positive recommendation to approve the resolution authorizing the transfer of funds, the establishment of an escrow account with respect to the defeasence of certain of the taxable general obligation funding bonds dated November 15, 2021. The defeasence transaction >> comes forward with a positive recommendation. Does not require a second. Any discussion? >> I'm going to abstain from discussion due to potential conflict of interest in this. >> Okay. Do we have a copy of the resolution that we're being asked to approve? >> Um, I do not have a copy of this. Happy Thank you. >> Well, would you like it read? >> Sounds like you're volunteering. >> All right. Resolution authorizing the transfer of funds to establish or sorry the establishment of an escro account with respect to and the defeasence of certain of the taxable
general obligation refunding bonds dated November 15, 2021. Whereas the Germantown School District, Washington County, Wisconsin, the district has outstanding its taxable general obligation refunding bonds dated November 15, 2021. uh the 2021 bonds where which were [clears throat] issued for the purpose of paying the cost of refunding certain outstanding obligations of the district. Whereas the district has certain debt service funds and other funds on hand, the funds sufficient to defeat a portion of the debt service on the 2021 bonds. Whereas the school board of the district deems it desirable and in the best interest of the district to transfer and apply such funds to the defeasence and early redemption of a portion of the 2021 bonds. And whereas since the 2021 bonds are not currently callable, it is necessary for the available funds to be irrevocably
deposited into an escrow account invested in direct obligation sorry obligations of the United States of America treated as a portion of the debt service fund for the 2021 bonds and applied to pay the principle of and interest on 1,ion10,000 of the 2030 maturity. all of the 2031 maturity and all of the remaining outstanding portion of the 2032 maturity of the 2021 bonds the defeased obligations on the April 1st 2028 early redemption date. Now therefore be it resolved by the school board of the district that one establishment of an escrow account. The school board hereby authorizes the district or sorry authorizes and directs the officers of the district to enter into an escrow account with associated trust company national association as escrow agent. The escrow agent for the purposes of affecting the provisions of the resolution.
Two, transfer and deposit to escrow account. The board, the school board hereby authorizes and approves the transfer and deposit of the funds into the escrow account to be established with the escrow agent in an amount sufficient together with earnings thereon to provide for the payment of the defeased obligations concurrently with the execution of the escrow agreement and the subsequent use investment and dispersement thereof by the escrow agent in a manner provided by the escrow agent. Three, professional services. The school board hereby ratifies and approves the retention of Robert W. Baird and company incorporated bar to provide general consulting services in connection with this transaction. Corros and Brady LLP, Bond Council, to provide limited special council legal services in connections with this transaction and Quy Public Finance LLC to provide bidding agent services for the escrow
securities and mathematical verification and related services in connection with this transaction. Four, redemption of the defeased obligations, notice of defeasance and redemption. The defeased obligations are hereby called for redemptions on April 1st, 2028. The school board here directs the escrow agent pursuant to the escrow agreement to provide a notice of defeasence of said defeased obligations and a notice with respect to the redemption of the defeased obligations at the time and in the manner set forth in the final escrow agreement. Five, authorization of officers and agent. The school board hereby authorizes the appropriate officers and agents of the district to work with Baird and the escrow agent to review and approve the final escrow agreement including the escrow deposit and other details to provide the notices of defeasance and redemption and to execute and deliver all
documented required by bond counsel. Sorry. To deliver all documents required by bond council with respect to this transaction adopted and recorded April 28th, 2026. >> Well, well done. Well done. >> Um, any further discussion on >> Thank you, Tom. [laughter] >> Uh, yeah, absolutely. Thank you for read that. Uh, it's wordy, but it's legal. There we have it. Um really all of that said to say that's um this is the fourth time since 2021 that this district or this board has taken action to defease the referendum debt from 2016. Um this particular maneuver should be about $1.9 million. Uh but the actualized uh financial savings to taxpayers is actually greater than that and be heard in that report. I won't go go over that, but uh so total right now if this goes forward and
approved of 9,146,596. Um that is not an insignificant amount and it's taken a great deal of um consistency and dedication to continue to pull that off. Uh the other reality of that is that's a referendum debt that should have uh closed in 2037 and we are now looking at a 2029 to 2028 time frame for that closure. Uh so significantly paid off um in advance which helps us unlock a bunch of those savings for our taxpayers. So thank you for everyone that was involved in that. Um the discussion is much longer than that but incredible work done there. Thank you. >> Any further Yeah, definitely a win for the taxpayers. >> Um, if there's no further discussion, I will entertain a roll call vote. >> Eric, >> yes. >> Barney is a yes. Loath, >>
yes. >> Plet, >> yes. >> UTK, >> yes. >> You >> abstain. Motion carries. >> It is passed. Thank you. Uh, sorry, Mr. Los. Yeah, we're I'm not done yet. [laughter] That was item B of through J. >> Right. So, full board item 10C 2026 2027 facility use fee structure. That passes. >> And uh last item, we adjourned at 7:09 p.m. >> Well done. >> Thank you. >> Uh item 11, new business 11A, discussion action to approve 2026 summer school contract to Jake Mizian. Uh this continues our spring cycle of getting
summer school ready and up and running. Earlier um in the winter we approved the courses that we would be offering and this round is approving the teachers who will be teaching the courses that were approved. Um when you look at the hours not to exceed that exist within the summer school contracts, uh you're going to notice variations in the numbers. One of the reasons why you notice that variation is it depends on a number of factors. Um, one of them is what sessions they're teaching. One of our sessions is nine days long as opposed to its standard 10 because the 4th of July falls on one of the days that would normally be a part of summer school. And there are some of our other courses that uh we do allocate more prep time for
because of the nature of the course. Um, one of those courses being lift boosters, which we are slowly transitioning to be what course we will be required to offer for students who are on reading plans in uh, if a student ends third grade with a reading plan. Uh, because of act 20, we're required to offer uh, instructional services during the [clears throat] summer to meet those through summer school. We're not required to do that yet. We started doing that last year. um we won't be required to do it until next summer, but we wanted to be ahead of the game and want to support our students uh in developing uh their literacy skills. So, that's why you're going to notice some of the variation in hours. We also have some of our teachers teaching two
out of three sections during one of the course offerings. So, um there isn't necessarily a standard amount that you're going to see all those hours being identical. >> So, I entertain a motion Motion to approve the summer school contracts as presented. >> Second with the motion. Mr. Barney with the second. Any discussion? >> I love all the classes here. However, uh Mr. Miziaak is after my heart for anything that's listed here that has engineering or science on it. So, I really appreciate uh those classes in particular. I don't know if it's possible. I I ask it doesn't always happen if uh at the beginning of the school year if the summer school summer school students could come in and present anything particularly science or en engineering related that would be nice. Tell them there's at
least one board member and probably all of them that would just love uh the presentation. And as usual it's not a punishment. Um, it's uh something that the board I think would like to see. There's a lot of neat stuff out there that I'm sure they're doing. Uh, as part of my annual reporting, I do provide the board with a summer school report. Uh, I think it falls in the October time frame and it is not one of the most exciting reports, but if we bring students here, you can see the positive impact they have on that presentation. So, uh, that is definitely something that we can look into. Yeah, it makes the school board meeting a little bit longer, but that's okay. You know, we can we can handle it, right? >> Thank you.
Um, just with that, yeah, there's a feedback loop that occurs that helps feed into that report, I'm assuming, whether it's staff and or student participation or >> uh yeah, student participation is an easy measure that we have in terms of what courses we're offering. Uh, we do try to continually add. One of the things that we notice is during the registration process, you know, what grade levels tend to have the highest level of parents who are trying to access our summer school program. So, we try to make sure that those offerings are available for our parents. And then when we build the program, we look to try and increase the classes that we offer for those age ranges. Uh, as students get older, we do see kind of a drop off in enrollment for summer
school classes. That's not to say that we don't have some of our upper elementary and middle school kids accessing summer school, but it's definitely more popular in our earlier grades. >> Great. Thank you. Any further discussion? Hearing none. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? >> Hearing none, that passes. Um 11B, discussion regarding Germantown Brand Development. Mr. Marian, thank you for attending and joining us. Thank you. Establishing a brand is an important step for our district. This isn't this is about one clear consistent identity for our district, not change for the sake of change. Alignment across all Germantown schools. GTown already exists across our community, though it shows up differently depending where you look. The purpose, three things. clarity, consistency, and unity. This connects our schools. It does not replace them. Mascots and school
identities remain. This identity goes back to 1992. It came from students. That history matters in this work. Right now, we do not present as one district. We look differently across programs, schools, and uses. This is an opportunity to fix that. This was not developed in isolation. Staff, students, and groups received multiple directions. We gathered input across roles, programs, and schools. Not every perspective aligned. Each opinion, each option, including the current one, had support. This direction reflects the broader input across all groups. Strong alignment on three things. Keep Gtown, modernize it, unify our district. The current mark lacks clarity. It reads inconsistently. Multiple versions create an inconsistent identity. It lends athletic, not districtwide. What you're seeing is a sample of a system, not just a logo. District identity, school identity, and how they connect. This is
a system that was shared for feedback. How district and school identities connect and stay consistent. Version one, connected more with us. more with athletics did not translate across all schools. Version two, closer to the current, still had clarity issues, still leaned sports. This version improved clarity, maintained Gtown, worked across academics, activities, and athletics. Version 4 generated interest but moved too far from that GTown identity. Key takeaways. Keep Gtown, unify our system, respect history while modernizing. Version three is our direction moving forward. It balances tradition, clarity, and districtwide use. Now the work shifts to standards. How this is used consistently across our district. Colors, typography, usage. A phase roll out aligned replacement cycles. This ensures when people see us, they recognize us as one district. Clear, consistent Gtown. Okay, this comes forward for the first time
in front of the full board or I think actually any entity of the board. I do believe some members were included in the focus groups. I be honest with you, I don't know who that all was. >> Me and Tracy. Okay. >> Um can you guys share kind of any part of that process? >> Yeah. So, familiar slides, Justin, from what we saw in the focus group. Um, not being born in German Town, I know that version two, kind of like the Packer G with the town, it seemed to strike home with a lot of people that do have a rich history here. Um, me not having that and kind of being someone with an eye for marketing and logos, I think that I said that I did like version three. Uh, version four I
said looked like a grocery store. So, I do I'm happy to see that uh version three kind of went through. Um, Tracy, anything to add to that? >> Uh, I don't think so. I I actually I hate to put you on the spot and I know Coach [snorts] Davis is here too and I know you shared some concerns with the the football helmet I think specifically. >> [clears throat] >> Um, was was there any spec I know you had shared there's some specific concerns and everything else. Could you possibly expand you'll need to come up with the microphone. Could you possibly expand on that a little bit to give some of the perspective that that the athletes the other you know other folks your coaches that that you had specifically regarding >> Yeah, there there's
there's some little bit difference in the history here. I think I think 1992 would have been where maybe the school adopted that logo. Um, looking back at the actual history of it, 1989 is when that actually went on the football element, just to be clear on on some of the history behind it. Um, that was probably the football thing I think and when Germantown High School changed from Washington High School to Germantown High School in 1992 was when I think the school adopted that logo. Um, that logo came out of then in 1989 from when um, we had the G on the helmet, a little more Packardish G. So, I think they went to the G Town logo that way. that's been on that G was on the helmet from 1971 I believe before they
had anything on the helmet that way from the Germantown perspective they always kept a G on the helmet even when it was Washington High School because I think people more resonated with it being Germantown High School rather than uh we're Germantown rather than Washington was kind of the history behind it. There's a lot of history behind that. I think I think one of the problems I have with kind of that thing is there's a lot of uh behind that logo. I think one of the things I I I express is that um it's not just a design that we put on on a shirt on a on whatever. Um I actually teach within my group, my leadership group, within my team. Um what it means to be behind that actual what's represented behind those things.
And so that's where I have a strong opinion on this. My my my kids have a strong opinion on this. I know everybody that's been that's worn that logo and that uh stands behind that um has a strong opinion on this. So I'm very passionate about this topic. That's why I'm here tonight, just to hear what's going on. Um, information. I'm not trying to cause any stir. I just want to hear what what this is all about. Um, show my, you know, interest in this that way. Um, and I I talked to my players about this. They have a very strong opinion on this, past, um, and current that way. So, um, but I think it's it's I I liken it to, you know, if I were to go to WMadison, Wisconsin, and try to
change the W there, I think you'd have the same kind of reaction. I think we're very passionate about that in Germantown, which is what makes us so great. I think that that you're going to have a lot of opinions on this um that way as far as from a um a change perspective. I don't think we're the only program that way. I talked to other coaches um around here um and people in this district from not just coaches um I've talked to um you know the band. I've talked to even along from from in in the different uh performance music and that kind of stuff who have their own logos and stuff like that. Um and and that kind of stuff. So there's a lot of history behind that. Um, I think I could liken
it to maybe there's some that was when I was in track, we maybe had a hodgepodge along the way um over time where there might there might have been some we had maybe a bunch where I think we need to get a handle on that. Um, I can see that. But there there is some there are some issues there. But that's why I think maybe there needs to be some more discussion on this um and looking through that process. I I think there could be some more clarity overall as a maybe a district wide thing. But I have lots of opinions on it. I don't necessarily know what I was getting into. I wanted to see what some more clarity was on this as we we go forward through this before maybe push this through
district wide. That that's kind of what I'm my would be my perspective on it cuz I think I have a lot of different opinions on this thing and I think um when I talked to players and kids and stuff like that I had some kids ready to say can I come tonight and I said no let's just listen here and I think this discussion I think I know there's a lot of good people that that will have honest conversations to talk about and we can all come to a good conclusion. So, but there cuz there's a lot of history as you can see and that kind of stuff just behind the football perspective. And that's one little microcosm of this whole thing. And I'm not trying to say that ours is is the way that's
not by any means as I know I often get painted in the football world as the football coach. I hope if you know me at all, I'm not like that. I am a educator in this district and that's first and foremost and I I am a global perspective thinker. So, I will always see it that way. Um, that's my job in this district [clears throat] is to be an educator and see it as from a district perspective, but I also have a job to maintain the, you know, the history and those groups that I'm a part of that way, too. So, I'm here to to fight for that for everybody here as well and work for that part of it too, for everybody involved. So, I want to be here as a uniter, too, as
well for everybody, you know, in this district as well. So, um, but I want to give that perspective from here. I've been here, you know, almost 20 years now. Um, and and I think that's one of the things I've always wanted to uphold. And I took the job as the football coach to honor what coach Dhaka before me um had had kept up for 42 years. So for me to sit here and not and to to just kind of let this go would be a disservice to what I've I've been, you know, kept for almost 20 years here as well. So that that's kind of why I'm here as well. So I'm going to I can keep rambling on forever. So [laughter] that's that's where I come from. I hope that kind of long- windedly
answered your question, but I could, you know, any more. >> Yeah. Could you could you go back to slide number two >> because I I think I'm going to try to add a little bit more color to to this [clears throat] >> option version two option two. >> No, this one. >> Oh, this one. Okay. >> So, I think part of just please jump in and correct me. I think part of part of this discussion led from the fact that we have oversimplified probably, but we have a school district logo, I'll call it. The Gtown in the middle is is is more representative of the I mean it's not not one for one, but but that's basically what >> that is. That's what's on the side. >> Oh, it is. Okay. I wasn't sure. So,
that's what's currently on the helmet as an example. The >> And then that's on the far right is more of an updated example. I think part of this, to be clear, we're not looking to change mascots or any of that kind of stuff. We're we're going to be Warhawks, but it's more of a a unifying brand because we in effect have two things representing us. We have a school district and we have in one example football and in many other examples soccer or track or basketball or whatever the case might be. And so this is discussion or presentation one of acts in the long run um to get us to I think you said unifying I think that's probably a very appropriate word unifying goal of saying okay what represents Germantown Gtown whatever we decide
on and I think that's that's part of the initial focus groups I agree with you I mean the bottom line is is ultimately we do need feedback from our students. We need feedback from the community. Uh the athletes in particular because they will be wearing this logo. But our band is also going to be represented. Our clubs when they when they wear their club shirts are also going to be represented. So, I mean, uh, I think in the grand scheme of things that that this is step one and I hope people look at this as that and take a look at it because there there I do have some preferences ultimately um that I don't personally know if if they align with others necessarily, but um with a hope of keeping some of the the
important traditional pieces, but also kind of giving it a refresh look and hopefully get people excited about it. I think it's important to remind too that as part of this process, we did get feedback from those groups. We had elementary students, we had elementary staff. Uh we had middle school students, we had middle school staff, we had high school students. So what was presented today was the collective feedback of all those groups, understanding the context all raised. I I think it's it's how do we unify a system that creates a brand that is currently inconsistent across all aspects and how do we get that to a place that respects that history and and that was the presentation said do do we have a step two what's what's the next phase of this because this there's
no action here this is just presentation information only at this point >> yeah our our next step would be to to move forward with the system and then to develop some brand guidelines and get some more specifics. Uh as I mentioned uh with Sarah in the development of this process is certainly getting in uh input from the coaches and all the activities groups on what the brand may look like. But what we wanted to bring today was kind of that system brand of like kind of where's the direction going. So when you say move forward, does that mean go forward with option three or does that mean continue discussions? >> I'm open to the feedback. I think our recommendation would be that we didn't come for a vote, but the recommendation would be to move
forward with that system. >> So um I'll jump in and provide a little feedback. Um, so this, like I said, I started this off, this is the first time this full board has had this discussion and that's correct and Mike had made mention of needing reminders every once in a while given all the projects that are being done. I do appreciate the two of you serving and I was apprised of that and I I understood that was going on. Um, my initial thoughts and years as president was that that was a start to the conversation to get the wheels going. This is really a bigger project than any one team or group or entity. Uh and um I know it doesn't come in front of us tonight for any decision, but I can tell you
before we land on something, it's going to >> have to um and I don't think we're there in the process yet. I think we have some ideas and I think we've had th those discussions. The next topic on this agenda is probably going to be a great working committee to house some of this work in um very sensitive myself to uh I'm not a generational resident of this community. I came in 2017, but the one thing I've learned about this community is tradition matters. Um and I have a lot of respect for that. Uh, I will also say think about about my words carefully here. Um, if we're going to move forward with modernization or change in regards to this, um, I can understand some of the reasons why. Over the last three years, four
years really of my term on on term and second term on this board, we've learned a lot about this district and a lot of the changes that have been implemented have been due to lack of structure, lack of support, and lack of uh continuity and leadership um in regards to processes in place. I think we can see that from the cross district vertical alignment that Jake Katie's team work with every day to help in, you know, we saw in the presentation tonight with Kelly and her students and her staff. Uh that work that's playing out. This is not actually surprising to me that there's I'm guessing different teams ordered different logos and didn't really check in and there wasn't really a process in place for all that and now we have this wide variety of
what's out there in the world and what Gtown means to whoever is wearing it at that time. And I do think we need to bring that back in and re rein it in, but bring it in and put some guidelines and some structure around it because it helps everyone understand what that is and what the path forward is and how we represent the brand across the district together, right? Because it's to your point, it's more than just one program. Um, it's it's the district. I'm sitting here. I have a pin on. It's a completely different logo than anything that's up there, but it was given to me the day at my first board meeting. I think Jeff's got a different one. uh there's a different logo outside of this school on the you know for
the district office that isn't this G that that's in the presentation. So I think the next item on here is going to probably help house a spot for a path forward in this progress and process. Um so I do appreciate coaches and staff members and teachers and and be honest I can't I love your approach to it that you're educator first. Um, I remember when I first started attending meetings that program, your leadership program was brought forward. Um, it's tremendous respect for that. I'm glad to hear that it's still going. I know it's a it's an interesting hour in which you hold it at what 5 a.m. or so. >> Well, that's for the that's for the team side of things, right? The class side of things. That's that's that's going on. I have a
second hour. I've had two >> two courses this year this first and second semester. Just that's a whole different y plug. I would like to come for the board for learn two someday. >> [laughter] >> that will be coming for us some sometime. So, so >> stay tuned on that. Jake will be talking about that sometime in in the future. Probably distant yet, but >> yeah, I and I'll kind of I don't know maybe over step and speak for the board, but I think we're all very sensitive to and understand all this that goes in. So, I appreciate the work that's gone on in this um that's taken place. I think some great steps have taken place, but we've really become a processoriented board and district and [clears throat] that's what's where that work is
going to be done. So, we've have some some information right as far as u data sets from different groups. I think we'd like to see that probably more formalized if it's possible or maybe we'll widen that scope. But I have a feeling this next agenda item is going to going to help build a process forward for that. >> Yeah. Thank you for allowing me to present and looking forward to continue to work in this way. >> Absolutely. Thank you, Justin. You guys, sorry for putting you on the spot. >> That's fine. >> Thank you. >> Football right now. [laughter] >> Well, I think you're supposed to be yelling, right? >> Well, I'm not here. [laughter] >> Okay. Discussion and action group. Uh this is item C. Discussion action group. adhawk communications/marketing committee. Uh let me
scroll past this presentation. So this comes about and I think this last conversation really highlights some of some of the needs for this. Um from time to time we'll we'll convene ad hoc committees and they're more working committees. We've done it for insurance in the past when we switched over to self fun. I know Tom led that. Um we've transportation traces led that recently. There's a lot of work that goes into these committees and they're a little more unorthodox. They're not quite as rigid and structured um from a workflow standpoint as some of our other committees. Um but the reality is and and Dr. Ryder who's here um we had a lot of discussion around this and um this particular project that was right before us led to some of this. Um the other was
the need and understanding that sometimes this board needs to communicate with the community um specifically the board does as a whole and as a group um and sometimes the district needs to communicate to the district and community and those could be not differing messages but at times different um we've been through a lot of it we heard in this last election around communication I frankly this pretty proud of the the board's acts in regards to the transparency level that we operate at in regards to our digitalization of these meetings and and all of our committee meetings. I know many districts who hold them in off hours where it's hard for parents and families and and members to attend. I know they don't record them. I know they don't really explain too much when it gets
to the full board the work that we're done in those. It's really important to me and this board that that that happens. I think it's a long tradition here that this board has taken uh unique way. I think there's also [laughter] an ability to approve it. Do I know exactly what that improvement is? No. But that's where I think this committee comes into play and it's going to allow a three member team to start directing some of that and making recommendations to the board. Uh we saw with Mr. Nerdle earlier tonight with the uh monument um >> wall of fame. >> Wall wall of fame. Yeah, the wall of fame um you know and in and the content that's going to be in there. But I also recognize our website >> has content and some
of it's outdated and who's going to be housed in working on that. The thing is we have Justin added to our team and this is one of the projects he has been working on but he's a pretty large scope of responsibility and we need an avenue for the board to connect with that communication piece out and for administration to connect and we're hoping to build channels of thought because he's now a tool in the belt for for our district. Um, and it's not always built in at this moment as a as a kind of a check mark as we're going through. How are we going to communicate piece any particular piece of information out to aid the community, school, families, students, parents, staff? I mean, there's a lot I think internal staff wise that most
of the community doesn't see that does get communicated, but how can we can we improve that if need be? So, I think this committee has an opportunity to do that. it has opportunity to do that with board guidance um and in a way that's transparent to the community. So, I will be if this um is approved tonight, I will be looking for three more volunteers. With that, I'll entertain a motion. >> Motion to approve an ad hoc communications/marketing committee. >> Second. [laughter] >> Good morning. >> You can have it. >> You got cease. Okay. [laughter] No [laughter] Mr. Party with the motion, Miss Utek with the second. Uh, any discussion? >> I am very willing to be a part of that at hawk committee if so chosen. >> Okay, awesome. Thank you. >> Uh, any
further? >> Yeah, I think it's a great idea. As we just heard a few minutes ago, they've got already some work to get started with. >> Yeah, and I think it'll be, like I said, it's going to be a little different. It's going to be a working committee. Um, and all of our committees are working committees, but this is going to be I could see a lot of interesting stuff come out of this and process come out of this. Um, just so we can get a better clarifying message out to our community members. So, >> yeah. And I think we say communication, it's I think we oversimplify it a lot. You know, it's it's easy it's easy for us to think, oh, it's just talking to somebody or putting something on the website is more
complex than that. >> Yeah. >> Take a lot of effort. >> Absolutely. Uh any further? >> I'm I'm looking for some short videos uh maybe for this uh you know this uh board that's going up in the uh uh what do you call it? The uh >> athletics area. >> Yeah. Athlet athletics area and also maybe on our website but short videos of the robotics team the you know doing things. Um, we've got the uh we've got some fairly high-end HOS machines and I've been looking since we got them for a video showing a part being machined. So, you know, they're they're CNC machines and they turn a block of aluminum into something interesting in you know, a minute or so. Well, of course we wouldn't video the whole, you know, several minutes of machining,
but we, you know, kind of step through it and show, you know, what the students can make. And then there's some other robots, you know, in the labs that can pick and place and that sort of thing. So, just short videos of uh anyone that might be interested in science, engineering, math, any of that that you could hit a button or click on something on the website and get an overview of uh what what's going on in the schools, the auto shop. I know we have some still photos uh in the shot in in the various uh classrooms, but you know, I'd like to see some short videos of what the students are doing also to kind of market ourselves. I I think we've got the best teched facilities in the state. I I don't
I I don't think I'm overstepping that, you know, our bounds by making that statement. I think we've got the best in the state and we don't have many short videos showing what we have. So, Sure. Yeah. I think there's a lot of opportunity here and I think the biggest thing is if the the district isn't doing its job to market itself and and talk about all the good that's occurring and we've seen a lot of that step through in Justin's um short video format via social media. So, I think that's another another avenue, right? Um, but if if we're not talking about all the good things that are going on, who is? Right. And I Kelly's team tonight with the students and the staff that were willing to come. I mean, that presentation, if you
would have brought that in front of this board four years ago, that would have been an interesting conversation, right? Versus how much depth they had and how much depth this team actually provided. this board, we understood what all that process was up front and they were able to just show us it in action which is amazing and I think this committee is gonna be able to push that across all topics and help help get this message out. So, but yeah, full fully agree definitely an item should be on the list. Any further discussion hearing? None. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? hearing. None. That passes. D.
