Good evening to everyone and thank you for joining us this evening. If you would please stand to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you very much for taking time out of your schedule joining us this evening on a beautiful evening. Board members, uh, you did receive an agenda. A couple of items on your agenda that I need to modify. If I would draw your attention to item 11 B, we need to update that here from 25, 26 to 26, 27. Okay. And then the second item is down your under your personnel item B service personnel item two there. I'm sorry. 1B. We need to add the school that that employee is hired
for Woodmire Elementary. Couple of those edits. Any questions before I make a motion? >> I'll make that motion for the amended agenda. >> Second. >> Thank you. Any concerns or comments? All those in favor of saying I carries. Mr. Banks, kicking off our good things tonight, please. >> Yes, sir. We have three things. You know, when we first started this, we were looking and now they just keep coming. So, really excited to share first part that we we had to let people know about. But the purple star award is an award that's given there's some information over here on the board by the department of education to school districts and schools that look out for military families. As we know many military families get displaced and students go to from one school to the next
and even within one particular year they can attend multiple schools. So, um, districts, uh, appoint a liaison in each school and that person serves as the communicator to these families to make sure that the transition from one district to the other is as smooth and seamless as possible. So, there were a few districts in West Virginia that were given this award and um, this is the release from the Department of Education. So, uh, if you look in the second paragraph, it says, "This year, 74 schools successfully received the purple star award as part of the sixth class. Brings a total to 319 purple star schools in the mountain state. Boone County also earned 100% purple star participation and is newly recognized as a purple star district. So there, the next sentence is the districts that
are in the state that are purple star districts. Berkeley, Greenbryer, Lewis, McDow, and Morgan counties renewed their status as Purple Star District, bringing the total to 18. So, we're very proud that not only is our district a Purple Star award, but all of our schools are as well. So, very excited. Um, if you've ever been to the U military celebration ceremony at Warm Springs Middle School that Mr. Harris puts on, you'll see uh a lot of special things happening and recognition for our military and our military families. So, just want to thank the board and thank all my principles and staff for being willing to look out for those students who uh travel and and go to from one school to the next across our our country. So, that's my good thing. >> Great news.
That is great news. >> Mr. helmet. There we go. Upper number two. >> I'll share my good thing and I'm lucky enough to have some of my students with me. Um, our good thing is we just got finished with our state GSA which was taking place this month, but in March we do like we do our manifest. I always equate that to this is what our GSA is like. So, it's not really a competition, but it's a level of one being superior, two is excellent, three is good, and nobody talks about. So, the the superior rating is what we earned this year. It's the first time that we've got it since 2014. The superior rating is the highest expected performance under the circumstances that are. Uh, it wasn't a perfect performance, but they understand that
because we had 30 minutes to warm up, go into a brand new auditorium we've never been in, play for people that we've never met before in a high state or high stress situation, and they made it. I'm super excited. A lot of the things that I learned at the Midwest conference that I got to go to last year and again this year I come back which are many more stories that some of the concepts and techniques other things we come in and share with them think about what was their intent when they're writing this down. It's not just, okay, here's a sound, here's a rhythm, put it together, go. Let's get into it. Let's get deeper into the thought process and really make a musical. Uh, and I just could not be any more proud
of the kids. I have a handful of them that have been able to be here with me since sixth grade. Trying to get them up to the high school level and just build this program more and more and more. I don't want to put any of the students on the spot, but I mean, they get to hear me talk all day. I'm going to ask all the students to stand up. We a lot of you out there. So, please give us put you in the spot. We won't bring up won't bring up to play anything, but we want to give you a round of APPLAUSE that you all did at the school was fabulous as well. It was really enjoyable. Uh all the different songs and the music put together, it it flowed wonderfully. So,
thank you. You all did a great job. Anyone want to share anything? >> I just want to know what who are the eighth graders. >> We got banned next year. >> See, that's our problem. We need to keep going. >> From either the concert at the school or the competition. I had a thought of sharing some of the recordings with us, but with the live streaming and with copyright, I'm not sure how all of that would have worked. Uh, and and that may have been just a little bit too complicated, but we do have a parade on Saturday, knocking on wood. It's hard to rain, but hopefully for those couple hours, we can block off a little bit of sunshine and you can come over here again. >> Very much. Thank you all very much.
Thank you for the opportunity, >> Mr. Harris. The podium is yours. >> Well, I'm not going to take too long because I'm going to turn it over to students to talk. I'm here on behalf of Mal, who is our explore manufacturing provided sponsor. Uh, our video design team competed in the state event over last week and finished in third place out school. video design. We didn't get the most view. It was something we always strive for, but be able to place in the top three eight different types of videos out there. I thought we should have been number one. Mr. Banks, I think agree with that as well. But if Melissa and Grayson can come up here, you can tell more what you did with Gat Creek. I had to call you up here. So
get you all did all the work. person. >> Also, >> I'll turn it over to them. on that whenever we went I don't remember when it was it was a while ago we went to um Creek and we basically just got a tour of the facility and what they do there and we got to make a really nice video to show it's been a while >> it took a lot of time because you They have about a 3minut video. So they had to take some time over. >> So who edits this? >> What's it up there? >> You guys how many years on team doing this? There's seven people including me and >> every character. >> So, how many hours are in this video? You think? >> Wild guess. >> Lots. >> I have no
idea. >> Too many. too many to count. Yeah, >> they were they were also recognized at the Eastern Awards ceremony of the Martinsburg once again with best video design qualifier and then we were recognized also as a future makers of manufacturing school as well. >> Are we watching this? All right. Hi, we are from Middle School and today we are here at Grand Furniture >> is here. >> Oh my Virginia so we can learn more about the problem and how to make the world a better place to name our solid wood church all over the world is CEO and he's going to tell us about how gap affects West Virginia's environment >> thanks for your question we are basically in the center of a horse for the most successful forces in the world. There we
trees are going 2.4 times past actually being harvested or die again. Constant turnover of trees. We do those trees and make beautiful longlasting furniture. We go locally instead of shipping stuff all the way into China and buying it back uh and doing things the right way. That's how we try to keep. I'm here with Becky, HR manager, and I'm here to ask how impact West Virginia's economy. Good question. Um, Jack Creek is the second largest employer in Northern County. We have 172 local artist that work for us. Our largest provider is actually located in West Virginia. Um, we've also done for several state parks. um a state park and um for state park and we recently built that for the president of West Virginia University. >> I told customer service and I'm here to ask
today about how they should be there. >> That's a great question for the US government departments around the world each with unique needs. We have the ability here to make that highly customizable. So we were able to fulfill some of those effort. We've already exported furniture to over 120 different countries. >> Hey guys, what would you say to someone who's considering buying the cheapest furniture on Amazon? >> Oh, you can tell they're making a mistake. They want to buy something really cool, really really good set. And you know, obviously better with buying something really from Amazon or even worse, they really China is clear about what they do. They care about the environment. They care about what they make. When you buy something ultimately from China, you don't know what you're really getting. You don't
know who really goes into it. You're really what you get. How do we get things that are made in America and hopefully >> MADE What a wonderful video. So, just to add a little tidbit you guys might be interested in, the president of WBU was here a couple weeks ago and his desk was made at Gat Creek and he went down to the factory and actually met the gentleman that signatures on his his desk. >> Are you ready for any more questions right now? >> I'm just curious. So, had you been to Gat Creek Furniture before I? >> So, what surprised you? I mean, I mean, you had this idea of what it's like there, but what surprised you to visit? >> Mostly for me, it was like what all in the factory, how they
actually went through the process. >> You didn't know what all was involved in the process? Yeah. That's a great video. I think it's the best in the state. I know this third place is Mr. Harrison watching chime in real quick. Gap was up with the education alliance a couple weeks ago and did some presentations for our wood shop classes as well. So those students got a great opportunity to hear about his company and everything as well. >> Question for wasn't too bad. Thank you very much for appreciate THAT QUESTION. >> YEAH. >> SO, you said 2014 was the last time you got this ring. >> So, 2014 for the middle school and for the high school is either 2016 or 2017. Uh so, we got the superior rating. So, so um your band obviously puts
in a lot of hours practice to perfect this and get this kind of rating. Um what what do you see as the difference? What's what makes this collection of students and how they play so different? >> Uh again, part of it was some of the things that I'd gotten from uh the Midwest and some thoughts to go into it and concepts. And another part of it is just the kids were really open to a lot of the suggestions. We would record ourselves, which is very hard, and then play back and say, "Yes, that's really what you do sound like." Uh, and we would dissect it, discuss it, re-record, and then hear the progress. And we did that process about two or three times through the month of March. And that way they can hear what
they're actually doing and and also hear the progressions that they're making. And success builds success. >> One other thing I was hoping that maybe each student could stand up and say who they are and what instrument they play. So you kind of know who's in your band. >> I think that's a great idea. I'm Mr. Helmet. I'm the conductor. I'll do the first. I'm Ellie Rosen and I play the flute and the piccolo. >> I'm play trumpet. >> Elliot. I play clarinet. >> I'm play the trumpet. I'm Xander Davis and I play the band. >> I'm officer and I play Grayson Beckman and I play Altoax. >> Yes, >> I'm playing. I'm a clarinet. I play clarinet. I'm play clarinet. I'm the clarinet. >> Congratulations to you. >> I'll speak for the students. I bet
you you're all good thing for the day is that there's eight days of school left. Is that about accurate? >> Is that eight? >> Six. not count over here. >> We started want to thank you again for coming in and spending a couple minutes with us and celebrating these accomplishments. Uh it is truly worthy to celebrate. Uh we always enjoy hearing it, seeing it, and just uh watching you all grow up to be amazing and successful students. So, thank you very much. We're going to stay in ease for a couple minutes. You all are welcome to stick around for the rest of our agenda and hear us talk some more, but if you don't wish to, you can head on out and enjoy the rest of your evening. >> Thank you very much. >> And
friends, let's get a quick picture before you leave. >> I hope we can keep in high school. budget hearing. Um, anyone else to speak about >> reports and communications in I'm going to touch on the budget then on a wonderful turnout from our community and our citizens in support of our excess levy. uh the percentage was astounding and very pleasing and so I think that they have a good feeling and a good um confidence in the board of education what we got going on here and wonderful things like this just add to that >> absolutely >> it's a great >> absolutely >> so and commend those that won their election congratulations wish you the best of luck in a month or So, uh, last thing I've got is, uh, Charleston. We have some athletes head
the state competition this weekend. I want to wish them the best. Um, I don't know how many total athletes, but there's a good number, the highest number that we've had in quite some time. >> 17 from Berkeley Springs and four from >> I thought it around 20 for the county. That's where I was kind of my mind was going. That's great. That's wonderful. Is it 17 from the high school? >> Sorry. >> Four members. >> Um, well, you stole my thunder because I was thinking the same thing. It just um I remember um Pete Gordon and I both a few years ago were u we didn't have any competition but we made the effort to go out and talk to groups about our system and everything else and then the co hit shut us down.
We were really disappointed, but there's something really special about having a chance to go out and just talk to people in in their backyard, whether it's a fire company or a community center or whatever. Um, and and in some cases renew friendships and began some new ones. Um, everywhere we went, uh, we were received very positively. Um, at least I was I was at a lot of them and and it was there was a good vibe. Just thank thank the people of Morgan County for supporting their kids. 1953, you go back that far and the people of Morgan County did something remarkable. Not only did they pass a levy, but then in short order, they passed the bond and that's where a number of our schools were were built. So, they they took they they
passed two uh tax increases in in a four-year period because they felt it was right for a school system. That's that's as good as it gets, you know. So, I'm impressed with that as I was with the people who were so good to us. The other thing I was going to mention, I don't know if Laura's going to mention or not, we were down at Stonewall and and typically, you know, the training is excellent. We learn a lot and u just um it's a long way to go of course 200 miles from me but just that the opportunity to interact with people who are running into all kinds of situations. We had Laura and our group we had two guys there who had been politicians elected politicians and they could tell us about some of
the uh inner workings of what's going on in Charleston when they're doing some of those things. and neither one of them were were um positive about the results, but you know, we we learned some things that we hadn't seen before. So, good work, good training from SBA as you would expect. >> Seems so long ago. >> Yeah. Um I just wanted to add with the um let me renew um really appreciate all the people that worked on the committee um to to get this done and we had most of our uh candidates for school board were there at every meeting and helped us talk to talk to the community. So that was greatly appreciated. Busy time of year. Lots going on. >> Two days until graduation. >> Two well one. >> Yeah. >> But yes,
two days. >> Uh 5:15 at football as well tomorrow. Correct. >> Yeah. If you want anywhere to park, you better be there at 3:30 at ours. Yeah, just a senior award. >> Oh, yeah. >> Hear all the good news there the other day. Well over a million dollars was given out scholarships. Um whole lot of kids walking up on the stage and walking back down. Um just a great event. Um, it ended with the Steely Foundation grant, which I'm always amazed at. If you can just fathom that it's pays for everything. Your tuition, your room moving boards, your parking, your books, and for that opportunity for one of our kids is just exceptional. And I just thank the state foundation for giving us opportunities like that. In addition to that, there were a whole bunch
of other local scholarships that were given out. uh some brand new ones that we've just started this year and some that you know from organizations that really don't bring in a lot of money but they the money they do bring in they put right back out to kids and so it's just great great event um very pleased with our students and the accomplishments they made um we had the walk of success today from Berkeley Springs High School to Whitmer Elementary it was very a lot. Um, really good walk. Um, and just getting to Whitmer and listening to those students clap and yell. >> Oh, it was loud and just a great experience. I think the I don't know who likes it more, the seniors or the little students, but it was great. Um, couple other
things. Um, before we let Mr. comic getaway. Um he was selected by the department of ed as the facilitator for the arts standards roll out and so he's going to be representing Morgan County and helping select and modify and change standards uh for the arts. So we're very pleased that he's representing us, not just Morgan County, but all the arts teachers across the state. So congratulations. >> Thank you. It's uh me and two other gentlemen who are going to be running the morning and afternoon sessions. >> Uh graduation ceremonies as you mentioned Paul's tomorrow night and Berkeley Springs is Thursday night. Uh we do know that there's rain in the forecast. Um as long as there's no thunderstorms, we still plan to keep it outside. We'll try to keep the seats dry. Mr. Julie and
I will be working on that. Um, and the reason is it's just difficult to move from outside to inside because fewer people get to participate in the graduation ceremony if you if you move everything inside. Now, if it's a if it's a downpour I don't know, but we're we're planning on being outside right now. I can tell you that much. Obviously, if there's a thunderstorm, we're not going to do that. But we have a plan for both places. >> What's our graduation number? 137 >> 137 >> in a in a poll with the kids today as we were walking to Wigmire, every one of us to do it outside of the game. >> Yep. >> I don't know about the parents, but that's all I have. >> Any questions? >> Could I mention something, please?
Several times this year, I've recognized a young lady for her uh college career. We have the good fortune. Miss Helm, please stand up. Mrs. Audrey Helm, who does everything quite well, number one runner on her teams at college, and I don't know, have you ever seen a bee in your life? >> Yeah. So, >> great job. And she's good with arts, too. >> Welcome home. >> Yeah. >> Item nine, consent agenda. The superintendent recommends approval of the following consent actions as presented. Minutes of the May 4th, 26 regular meeting, pay a bill's budget adjustments. Volunteers, there are some committee minutes. So, I'll give an extra second. Any comments or concerns regarding the committee minutes? Entertain motion to approve the consent agenda as submitted. >> Submitted. >> Second. >> Thank you. Thank you. Any other concerns
or questions? All those in favor in saying I carried personnel superintendent recommends approval of the following personnel actions as presented. Good evening on the personnel agenda here I will say but under employment here uh under letter A that we had we're bringing on a first grade teacher. We're also bringing on a special teacher or first grade teacher at Midmire and social a teacher at B Springs High School. We're also have a transfer there from 75 principal 25 ESL special education teacher Paul. She's coming over to be our special education coordinator that will be effective July 1. Um here on the next one here we have this individual is being brought as a substitute bus operating associate to help us from now until the end of the school year. She's also letter B which will be
the code for next school. Um then we have bus operator 1406. Um under number two we're sending a RIP and reassign this individual to a teacher ECAT at War Springs Intermediate School. And then we have a transfer here from special education aid autism mentor to kindergarten ECAT at Pleasant. will also begin August 10th. On the next page here, we have a resignation from a couple of our substitute a substitute clerk. Bring on the head volleyball coach. She was mentioned in the video there creek there a few moments ago. Uh we have we have a resignation assistant coach at Berkeley cross country coach at B High School. Under letter D, number one, those individuals for letters. Uh number two is for uh kindergarten screening. Number three is for numeracy committee meetings. Number four is for s
meetings. Number five is for mo 101. And then number six is for uh professional staff development council. And then under uh G, we are asking to update our supplemental salary scope for the chief mechanic and mechanic. As you guys know, those guys are part of the flute down here in the bus garage. They drive for us constantly. They're constantly stepping and help us out. So, we're asking that. >> What we're asking is to go from 15 per day for the chief mechanic to 25 and for the mechanic of $10 per day. And then over on the happy to bring on a certified math teacher, Berkeley Springs High School. Uh we do have a resignation there as eighth grade language arts teacher Springs Middle and a resation substitute teacher and service personnel. We have a substitute
resigning and a substitute a individual is also a substitute secretary that has resigned. We have under extracurricular we have a cheerleading coach at North Middle School resigning. That same individual is a co-sponsor of the middle school. under professional staff development. We have one individual there for the minutes on that uh for letters. And then uh number two is for the unpacking standards. Under letter E, we have a summer personnel. This is where we start bringing on our summer employees. Uh the first individual is for the summer program cook. uh that will be from June 15th to July 24th. And the next two individuals are bus drivers for that same program. That will be the same length of days on uh June second agenda. We should have all of our teachers for that program added on
that. It will probably be the jobs close the Friday. So there'll be a list of folks on there. Any questions? A motion. >> I move we accept the personnel presented. >> Second. >> Thank you. Thank you. Comments. >> All those in favor of saying I carry it. Thank you very much for your work on that. >> I will point out that we have certified math teacher. He's also very involved in what's called M3T which is a state sponsored professional development a very good one that the department of ed puts on. He is right in the middle of it. He was one of the teachers that actually originally started in the professional development. So he brings that expertise to county also. Finance and budgets. Item A, adopt Morgan County's proposed budget for the 2627 school year.
Any approval by the state board of education. >> I just wanted to mention that um I went over the budget last week to get a state meet their tolerance levels. I had to change the amount in oil increase it by 1500 which caused me to decrease the tires $1,500. and the census could still some detailed feedback after seeing the interesting things they also count the past year. So it's interesting and very quick and timely too. >> I move we accept the proposed budget. Seconds, comments. >> All those in favor saying I car approve the remainder of the step seven plan for the 2627 school year. I'll make that motion. >> Second. >> Thank you. Comments, >> questions. All those in say I. >> Nice car. We're moving right along. Approve. Blackstone roofing for Becker Springs
High School building a roof replacement pending post bid paperwork is complete. >> Sorry, we actually I'm really excited about this. We already have a pre-construction meeting scheduled this Friday. Um so that's a plus. Also, we've been talking with the contractor there. We have some I think we're going to have some pretty good news coming forward too about the other roofs that we have in the country as well fairly soon. So really happy about all that and happy with the speed this is moving along. So that's always a plus. >> That was my only question. Are we hoping to be done over the summer? >> They haven't given timelines yet. Um I'm sure Friday will be more information on it. I think it's all about what materials they have and what they need to get and
that kind of thing especially with the cost raise and again you know it's just you never know but they were well under budget again many means so we're happy with that as well which will ultimately make our match less so that helps us out with our locally funed projects that we talked about those committee meetings as well so >> did we hear back from the state department on that match conversation >> Mr. banks had a conversation with him. So, what do you think you said? So, you know, the bids went out the successful bid was well under what the estimate was. Um, I was at a meeting with the SBA director and I said, um, so we would like to take that money and put it into our roots that we didn't get funding for
on the MIP projects and then give you back the rest of the money. And he says, "That sounds like a good idea, but that's not going to work." He said, "Ask me that in front of the whole group." Okay. So, I asked him that in front of the group because I think they get asked that question a lot. and he kind of told the whole group that it just because your your project comes in dollar bid doesn't mean you're going to get to keep some of that money to put towards other projects in the county. It all gets sent back to the SBA and they distribute it to counties that maybe were near the top of their list that didn't get funded. So, it was worth asking. >> Sure. >> We we have in the
past delved into a conversation. Let's get off on a tangent here on whether or not we put a percentage in or a dollar figure in percentage. >> It's always a percentage. >> It's been it's been a percentage. The ones that I've been a part of either 10 10 or 20% on those matches. >> But like I said, the good thing about this one is is that our match ultimately will go down, which will give us back money. Mhm. >> We will get back a little bit but not as much as what we get. >> In past years on some we have put in just a flat rate here. So that's why I was curious on that. >> I like what you're saying because it's very reasonable. >> We plan to whatever money we save put
it right back into the the roofs and we'll still have some more that we want to get to. Good try. I'll make the motion for Blackstone roofing for BSHS. May I have a second? >> Second. >> Thank you. Any other concerns, comments, questions? >> All those saying I post nay. Carries. Right along to program planning approved BHS band to attend the music and the parks on June 3rd and the 4th in Busushch Gardens, Williamsburg, Virginia. Funny source BSHs banned. >> I'll make that motion. >> I took this. >> Oh, sorry. I didn't I should have watched it. >> It's completely fine. >> Okay. Good time. How many are going? >> Uh, I'm not certain. I think it was like 50 is what the limit is on to, but I can't say that for sure. >>
We're not asking for a limit here. Any comments, concerns? All those in me saying >> I n car. Approve summer mlin talk to attend volume two letters facilitator training in Plano, Texas on May 17th to 21st, 2026. Funding source WBDE letters grants. >> I was going to say, isn't she already there? >> She is there. >> So moved. join us by webinar. >> Second there. >> Any other comments, concerns? All those observ I >> post nay. Eyes carries. Item C, approve BSHS FFA trip to FFA state convention in Cedar Lakes, West Virginia on July 7th through the 11th. Funding source CTE. So move. >> Second. comments, concerns, questions. All those in favor say I. I carried it. Approve the memorandum of understanding between Morgan County Board of Education, Capan Institute, Experience Learning, and PTOAC Valley
Audabon Society for the West Outdoor Learning Network Initiative. who is taking this conversation that one that that's an ongoing partnership that we've had now for at least 5 years maybe longer. Uh this gives our kids experiences in the outdoors. Some of our elementary teachers take students on field trips that are often sponsored by this initiative and our teachers work very closely with all those organizations as they as they go. um a lot of trips to Jefferson County over in that area. Um most of the trips within the eastern panel, but it does give us additional funding and resources for our teachers to take students on trips. >> Any concerns with theou before I ask for a motion? >> All right, continue motion. >> I make that motion. >> Thank you. >> Second. >> Thank you.
Any concerns or comments? All those favor say I. >> I. I n carry it. Item E, approve the following to attend the instructional empowerment building expertise conference from June 24th to 26th in Orlando, Florida. Conference presenters are David Banks, Beth Golden, Mitch Kn, Jamie Harris, Karen Reed, and Megan Powell. Conference attendees will be Anne Helmick, Renee Finchum, Chad Shrimmel, Tiffany Clemens, and a Paul school teacher. Funding sources, six registrations through the IE contract, four complimentary and other expenses covered by WBD, professional learning grants, and county funds. >> Miss Golden's here. She can give us a little bit more detail on the trip. She's been working on it for months now, so to her. Um so we're very honored to be asked to present at the conference um of the instructional empowerment leadership reached out to
us and said that they wanted us as a model of a secondary implementation. So they reached out to several of us to actually be presenters. Mr. Banks and I'll be presenting on what a district level rollout looks like. Mr. Naida is presenting on what a coaching model looks like for teachers and the middle school personnel there, Mr. Harris, Miss Reed, and Miss Powell, will be presenting on code models and how that's working at the school. Um, and we're also especially excited to be able to take a number of teachers this year. Um, think four, four, five, three, four, five maybe. Yeah. So, um, that's exciting. Um, I just think after our experience last year, it's it was a wonderful like way to sort of begin um a new year. While we're ending one year, we're
beginning a new year with a bunch of ideas um as we're going to move forward. >> I don't know if there's anything else, Mr. D you want me to touch on. I can have a random question. How many districts is I across country? >> Well, that's a good question. I do in a whole lot of states. I can tell you that they're concentrated in several different states.
