Um, item four on the agenda was the approved minutes from the meeting held December 1, 2025. Next, we're going to jump into we have a few res uh recognitions tonight of some really, really dedicated employees. Um, >> hey, hold on. Is it We didn't get that page, did we? No, we didn't get the second page. >> Okay,

let me let's Hey, um Chris, will you go have Janet print page two for them? They didn't get page two. He brought that speaker. >> Well, he's printing page two for you. We'll uh we'll go ahead with the recognitions. Um, I would like to ask Dr. Sarah Lee to come up. She has some information to share um, as it relates to the Nicholas County Literacy Association and the great work that they do here for our students and then also a couple employees that were recognized um, for their outstanding work as well. So, I'll let her jump in. County Literacy Association is an affiliate with the West Virginia Reading Association, which is a professional development organization promoting literacy in Nicholas County and all across West Virginia. It's been in existence for over 50 years and sponsors

professional development opportunities such as the reading conference, which has recently taken place at Ogleby prior to the Thanksgiving break week. Um, Nicholas County usually sends several teachers and have a lot of active participants with the organization. Um, the local council is currently trying to support our initiative with bringing read aloud and vocabulary development to our schools. Um, we currently have a collaborative between Richwood High School and Webster County High School and they're doing some book study work with the book 23 Shots by Max Sables. The ninth graders are reading the books in the classrooms and studying the historical events which is from happening involves which is the Webster counties and one of the characters ends up police commissioner in Richwood. So, they're going to take care of reading that uh book which is telling a

story from the 1800s. And then Max Samples came up um on the literacy association's dime and met with the students kind of did a little cramp with the book and then in the spring when they finished they'll be traveling to Camp Caesar and actually doing some more followup work with that. Uh we also are working with the organization to do a community readaloud project and some business owners have been working to do some readalouds and some video virtual tours of their business or community area and getting that out to teachers in KM1 for vocabulary and background building. So far they've visited Fresh Start Market, El Bandido, and today they recorded at at Appalachin Coffee House. Some of the other projects that the literacy association helps with include the Nicholas County Literature Fair. They've have made

a parade float to promote reading at home and ended up distributing over 500 books and reading tips for parents. They've provided some information tables at community events such um as sponsoring a book club with Summersville Library and they typically re recognize teacher members during American Education Week and Teacher Appreciation Week. So tonight we're here to recognize some teachers who work for us in Nicholas County that are also active members of the council and to recognize the council as a whole because the council managed to walk away with three statewide awards as a cohesive group which is probably the most ever. So, I'm going to turn it over to Jennifer Davis who serves as one of the co-presidents and she can tell you a little bit about the awards that they've won and then the particular

individual awards. The Nicholas County Literacy Association was presented as an honors council for West Virginia Reading Association. We have met all the goals for West Virginia Reading Association to be considered as an honors council for the state. We also received the Dr. Mary Moro Touch of Class Award which is a um award given from do by Dr. Marine Moroi to enhance um one of our uh meetings to um use to help get our members in and and give them a little bit of recognition. We also Samantha Murphy wrote a grant for us and we received the Cynthia Lorose Hook um donation to help us with our projects in Nicholas County at that conference as well. We also had two um of our teachers that received an award from the state and we'll start out with

um Samantha Murphy. She received the 2025 Match McDaniel Award for leadership um in promoting literacy across the state. Make sure the board will stand up. Think one more. Did anyone think she needs one? >> Got to brag on Samantha. She does a great job integrating all the aspects of literacy into the technology that she's sharing and helping our teachers with that library media specialist in Julie Williams and she received the Dr. Jenny Betol award for firstear teachers and promoting literacy in her classroom. about to reorganize your classroom and try some new things with small group instruction. She's one of the first ones that replied back, "Count me in." And she's done a fantastic job with it. >> Well, thank you, Dr. Lee. Thank you uh um everyone that's involved with the Nicholas County Literacy Association.

it does wonderful things for our students and and again anytime we can promote reading um um that's what it's all about. So thank you. U moving on um to item seven, superintendent information and updates. I just have a couple for you. First and foremost, I have a couple thanks that I would like to extend out tonight. Um and both of these thanks are to the Nicholas County Board of Education members. First, I'd like to thank you guys for for really stepping in and helping with the transition um as it relates to all the materials and equipment and furniture that that we transported and moved from Panther Creek to the new Cherry River um elementary facility right there before Christmas break. Uh your help was tremendously um valued and um you all went out of your

way. So, I just appreciate that personally and and I know all the staff and the community appreciated that as well. So, thank each of you for your for your work and coming up and helping out. Um, secondly, again, I would like to thank the board of ed members um for attending today's um ribbon cutting ceremony at the Richwood Academic Complex. It went really, really, really well. Very well attended. Um the ribbon cutting ceremony on both ends of the building, the high school, middle school entrance and the Cherry River entrance was was really good. Um everyone that uh I spoke with from the different agencies that were involved and spoke was was really impressed with the facility. So all that is a reflection on all you all's work that you did over the past several years

and um and as I mentioned over there that the uh the facility itself is beautiful but it's also a place where students are going to walk through those doors and and make memories for many many many years. So everyone should be proud and thank you guys for your work on that. Um quick update on the Summersville academic academic complex construction. Um not much has occurred over you know as the holiday season um the last few weeks but we do have they are currently get running temporary heat into the areas that they will continue to work throughout the winter months. Um the areas that were not fully enclosed with windows and doors, they have secured those with plywood. Um so they're going to continue to progress through those facilities um as it goes. We do have

a construction meeting this Wednesday the 7th. So we'll we'll find out more of what the landscape and what the uh next month or two entails after that meeting. Um I did touch base with ZMM today while I was in Richwood and a quick update on the career and technical ed roof. Um they're waiting one more document from Sutter roofing. Chris with with with ZMM wasn't sure if that was their bond or their insurance um documents, but as soon as they get that, they will be um scheduling a preconstruction meeting. Um he did Chris did reiterate that Sutter roofing was probably going to want to wait till the weather broke before they got started and that the process and the project should not take that long to complete because it's not a huge roof and not

a lot of square uh footage that they're dealing with. I'll keep you apprised of that as we move forward. Um what else do I have just for just for you all's information? Myself and Mrs. Fletcher and our directors will start we'll start having um internal meetings next week along with uh followed up by meetings with our school administrators as we look into next year. Um we're getting close to that February, March, April time for personnel season. We'll have to look at look at uh the funding that we have allocated for next school year as it relates to the number of personnel we have and the needs in each of those areas. So that will be occurring within the next month or two. Um, so I just wanted to give you a heads up on that.
