Upure County Board of Education special meeting for calendar and NT to order. Could we please have roll call? Yes, ma'am. Jan Craig here. Sherry Dean >> here. Susan King >> here. >> William Parker >> here. >> Roy Wager >> here. Hi. >> Christine Miller here. Tim Dico >> present. >> April Synick >> present. >> Sarah Wills >> present. >> Elaine Pew >> present. >> All accounted for. >> We'll continue on with the pledge of allegiance. >> I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We have been provided with an agenda. Are there any adjustments or additions to the agenda? >> No, ma'am. As presented, >> I would entertain a motion to accept
the agenda as presented. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Mrs. Dean, Mr. Parker. All those in favor, please signify by saying I. >> I. information for the public hearing for the 2627 school year calendar and NT program. Mr. Duro, >> before you is the same calendar that you looked at at the first calendar hearing which uh with the cancellation of the last board meeting. It's been, you know, a full month since we we looked at it. But um the only difference in this calendar and that calendar is the May 14th out of calendar day. Originally in the first version it was on May 21st. And one morning I was looking at this calendar and something didn't feel right. And when I verified the Strawberry Festival Friday, it was the 14th, not the 21st. So it
was just an adjustment for Strawberry Festival Friday. That's the only That's the only change out of all. Um, just to give you a brief summary, you know, week of Thanksgiving, a full week at at Christmas for everyone, staff and students, and then students would be off another half week, and staff would report on the 23rd of December um, and then return on January 4th. This has the absolute least amount of days permissible for a semester which is 82 prior to Christmas. So we would finish first semester at Christmas break. Uh full week at spring break those are all out of calendar days not OS days. So they would not be jeopardized because of a bad winter. and the OS days. Uh the majority of the four are tagged on at the end and that would
be where you would get into makeup days for snow situation like we have this year. Uh the 10 OS day at the beginning uh in November is ahead of election day. That's just for attendance purposes for staff and students just so that we can protect our attendance rate. Uh and if folks want a long weekend, there it is. That's that's a valuable time for family or or whatever case they see. But we typically see high absences from students and staff on a day like that. Uh the other OS day is in December on on Christmas Eve. So provided that we're not in a situation to make up days already at that point or either of those two points. Those would be built in as breaks. The PL days are still on Wednesdays to try to
protect attendance there. Um we we notice an increase in attendance [snorts] issues whenever they're on a Monday or a Friday. Um we've experimented always basically but the Wednesdays seem to work well. There is a Friday at the end of spring break in April that would require staff to report for PL day and that's something we looked at pretty extensively. That trade is is for strawberry festival Friday basically. And if you put that PL day on strawberry festival Friday, you will probably have the same results that you would on that. We will we're required to provide a faculty senate time during April. Uh that's just the best location we could put it. We talked about moving it to a week by itself. Uh you can't bring student I mean it doesn't make sense to bring students
back on that Friday. Um, if you do, you would probably have to sacrifice Good Friday, uh, which is the week prior. So, it there's [clears throat] give and take. And I I joke about calendars all the time that you can do anything you want, but there there's a reaction on the other side of where that is. This matches what our calendars have been in the past. There's not significant differences to our previous calendars. So, our parents, our families, they they know what to expect. our staff and our students. And there's there's breaks built in for a reason. I've always felt that that it's for students and and for staff both. They're necessary and good for for the progress. Any questions concerning that on the very beginning of the year, >> we've got two professional meeting
days. And then what are those? What is the Tuesday and Wednesday? Are those preparation days? >> Professional learning days >> and and professional learning. So that we're talking on the same thing. Professional learning count as instructional days. So like we just had a professional learning day on the 18th and there were some people asking why we didn't make up a snow day because students were only there for a half day. You don't gain anything. And it is already an instructional day. so you're not gaining a day back, so to speak. Um, the curriculum folks got together and they wanted to frontload some PD at the beginning of the year. So, we have the 2 PM days and the 2 PL days. So, we'll actually have four days with staff without students. We have not decided
yet about the Wednesday. We have typically ran a shortened schedule on that first day of SK of school >> and that has allowed for transportation. So, you know, it's a it's a good run and a good test for everybody. Um, and then able to work out any issues that you might have. But right now, [snorts] um, we have those four days for staff development right there for curriculum. The prep day is the very first day. Teachers will be in their classroom the first day of school, the first day they come back. >> I I like having those four days all at the beginning because you have high attendance at that time. People are ready to get back and get in the groove. And I like that. >> They're excited. >> Much more excited, I think,
than sometimes on a Wednesday in the middle of the year. >> Very much so. >> Yes. >> Do you all have any questions? Now, does this match the other count's calendars? How much different are we >> within I mean within a minute differences? Um differences because of festivals and things like that. Um I think we are all starting on the 20th of August. Um there are differences in the end because of our PL days them not having the PL days are very similar but they're not exact. The only place that really creates us any any issues are with Fred Everly. >> Yeah. >> And Rebecca is good with this. Rebecca at Fred Everly has been with us as far as development. And she was adamant at the beginning [clears throat] of of trying to come
closer because we were we were miles apart at the original onset. But she's content now with this calendar. >> Okay. And typically when once our calendar is approved and she sends she asked me for a copy and then she develops her calendar directly from up county. >> Go ahead. >> Because she follows our our our her staff follow our schedule, right? >> Anything else? Do you want to tell us anything? Is there anything different on the N days? >> No. Okay. Mrs. King or Mr. Wager, do either of you have any questions? >> I do not. >> Okay. I would entertain a motion for adjournment from the calendar committee or the calendar special meeting. >> So move. >> Mr. Parker. >> Second. Mrs. Dean. We are adjourned as of 5:39. We will reconvene at six
o'clock for the regular meeting. I'll call you back. >> I was just going to say you want to just call me back.
