001going to unmute. So, we're live. >> We're good. >> Yep. >> Okay. We'll go ahead and call our special meeting of the Lake County Board of Education to order. Like, >> um if you'll stand, we'll say the pledge. To the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> Let the record show that all board members are present in person except Mr. Ross who's joining us by phone this evening. First item on our agenda is our local school improvement council presentation from Lavallet. [clears throat] >> What time did we have on the meeting? >> 401. Okay. >> All right. We just want to welcome you all to Lavallet. Um I want to just thank you all for being

002here and um I have Miss Star and Miss Michelle put together this spread for you guys. So I just want to thank them for that. >> Yes. Thank you. Thank you. [applause] And then a lot of my committee and staff and parents are here. So I want to thank them for that as well. Um >> we appreciate it but John especially appreciate [laughter] agree. >> So um this year I've decided to let some teacher leaders help me with this. So um Miss Ren is going to kick us off uh for our presentation. I'm gonna talk about a couple of things just real quick. um attendance and uh our enrollment and our um chronic absences have actually gone down as you can see by% and our average daily attendance is is up there compared to last

003year keeping at 94.5. Um we have pretty good attendance from our kids. They want to be here. >> Um the parents want to bring them. It's not the fights that we used to have. And being a teacher at this school, I've seen it have attendance really low. So, I'm proud that we are at the level we are right now. Um, our enrollment right now compared to last year is down. We were at 246 last year and we're at 209 this year. Um, our socioeconomic status is from last to a 55% compared to last year at 52 in special education. Even though our numbers stay at 28% our actual total of special education down to 58. >> We did lose title one this year. Even though our low SCS is up, we did lose that this

004year. So >> the um yeah any any rate below 20% is really impressive. So it's uh it's great to see that it's below that 20 mark. >> Thank you. >> And we actually have zero students with over 10 days of excuse. So we're proud of that one, too. >> We're proud of that one. All right. Uh next is Miss Sloan. She is going to talk to you about our proficiency. Okay, so we start with the summitative proficiency rates from 2022 to 2025. There's been consistent growth in ELA and science and up until 2024 25 did drop slightly but we have implemented like weekly PLC's that is standard driven and those standards is based [snorts] and it is I'm going to skip the star rating first and go to the star rat to show that the

005interventionist and the ecats are healthy. If you look at the second third grade [clears throat] the proficiency growth from fall to winter 20 to 30% but reporting kids is growing also our reading the same 14% growth efficiency and overall for 2425 2526 if you look at growth from year to year we are improving. So I like if we look at the state benchmarks on each page we start with some numbers that I thought you know stood out for me to discuss and celebrate. So first for third grade if you look standard for benchmark one we decreased that to 25%. overall reduced that's on standard receipts. We went from 11% for the first benchmark to 43%. So we were really proud of that since I'm the E3 teacher that >> um also extremely proud of the

006thriving. So we had increase from 0% to 33% uh for fourth grade. My goodness. So fourth grade on their savior their proficiency overall 15% to 34%. Their 504s went from zero to 80%. So we go fourth grade fifth grade [clears throat] they went from 31 to 32. Oh I want to add add [laughter] thing that is our highest population. So >> um for math I want to look at the third grade probably for stats. If you will look at the beginning we went from 0 to 33% but if you look at the end of growth it's -6 and I know you want to talk about collaboration. So I want to talk about collaboration. The collaborative efforts between the interventionist, the third grade teachers, the fourth grade teachers and the second grade coming in with the

007ECAT. We have found that survey students needed support from the first benchmark to now. So that's why that negative numbers there. I know it doesn't look great, but if you look our numbers of the 504, three to four students qualified for a 504 between first. So those numbers will improve, but that's through the collaboration of the interventions to show you. And then if you look at fourth grade, the same thing, it's from 8% to 23% with math. And then there again those 504s 25%. So we're moving in the right direction and I really hope we meet our goals this year. So if we look at science rate increase 10% to 22%. And if you look last year we did meet our target goal for that and I think we're on the way to this year.

008>> Excellent. Thank you. >> Yeah. those uh those double digit growth uh growth amounts are fantastic. And then I was looking at your instructional reading level scores, Ally. >> Third grade is already at 88%. >> Yes, >> that's that's great. Fourth grade at 82%. >> Yeah, those those are really good numbers. >> Um our fifth grade this year, I will just say they've always been um two classes, but this year they fell below. So, uh, we do have 27 in one class. So, that's a little bit different for them. Um, so we have all 27 in one class. So, they're kind of adjusting to that. Um, so we're not seeing as much growth there, but after we saw those numbers on that first benchmark, we've put in some uh interventions in there as long as

009some uh co-eing and and pullouts and things like that. So, >> [clears throat] >> Um, math is one of our focuses. Um, we were I'm pretty competitive person and we were the only elementary school on um the state report card not to make the growth in math. We were in red in math. So, which baffled me because we met our target, but we didn't make we didn't meet that. So, um we really are focusing on the math. We're doing the Carnegie, but we're also focusing on the basic facts. Um doing time tests, checking their basic facts, trying to catch them at an earlier rate. Um with, you know, kindergarten and first grade, you know, up to our third and fourth. you know, in third grade if they don't learn their multiplication, they're not they're going

010to really struggle with with the other math. So, we're just really focused on on math again this year as well. So >> I'm going to talk about targeted students awards what Mrs. was asking about how we found out who needed those interventions and created those combinations for testing. We worked on strengthening our core skills and we tried to create equity among all the students. We have diverse learners. It's not just one or the other. And then everything that we kind of strategic plans to support our school goals which we talked about needs and trying to make towards what to make. We really focus on our K2 with our early interventions because we're reminded that without those foundational skills in the earlier interventions and that's really where it needs to take place that those gaps just

011widen it makes it very difficult. We know to especially for critical thinking that it makes it really difficult if they don't have the basis in order to grow with those skills. So if we don't have those early supports that prevents failure and that's just based on evidence based um we use cohort instruction small helped us to have interventions interventions and ours utilizing those within our classrooms. Um, I'm I push in quite good this year and especially with Dusty back there and our first grade one team, they know pulling those kids. That's not the world of difference. Um, and then giving the intensive support because it brings up if they do have centered instruction that they can pull some kids off to the side when they're actually working on it and then they collaborate with the

012intervention so that they take those skills and they work on them later. We want to make sure everything aligns with our goals. We want to use our effectively and we want to sustain that. I feel like that's something that we really get on this year. Um I think a lot of times we talk about that. We don't use it for instruction. It's just something on a piece of paper. did that 20 years ago wasn't really where we were at, but it drives the instruction and I think that we definitely change the things with our PLC's here to really focus on what we're teaching, how we're assessing it, and what it look like after we take the early support is what matters. The dad she got all of our decisions that we're making and our leadership

013is essential and I feel like we have that as a school collaborate very well and that's why I have like some coffee. Um, but these are different things and you can pass those down that we do in our PLC's and this one I really like. She does that on a grade level and so like I have all grade level so I'll pick one and go in or whatever. So they have to tell her like what are we looking at for the written story and these are the samples like and what standard are you teaching by grade it'll tell you and what did we review for data where are you at so those are discussed weekly in our PLC's and then that way it's easier to target maybe those pockets of things that need to be

014taught or maybe they need support from intervention Maybe they are something else going on and that creates that documentation. They may need testing program specialifications. I I really get a lot of myself from that. Um it's helped me in my own teaching how they break that down, especially with the reading groups and the components within that. It just makes you self-reflect, which is what we all need to do as teachers. That's what I have on PLC's. And the next one was behavior. Um our behavior sort of made up incidences. Um we had one for 256. Um we had in 2024 25 we had two threats of injury and we had we've had none currently as of 25 26 uh physical fight without injury we had one in 24 25 but we haven't had any for

01525 26. So the totals for all of that from 20 25 320 26 so far has been four. And we also have before our behavior kids like we do what's called the think about it room. So prior to them receiving an actual write up for something. Um we have two teachers. Slime does the older kids and Mrs. Mans who's a kindergarten does K2. So they have we have a QR code and it has a form on it and that is for like I would say something repetitive going on with them. It could be in the hallway, it could be in the classroom. Um, and then what happens is they use a form [laughter] to track it and then it's dated and the teacher why they received it, the reason, and then when they go in

016to think about it, they have a think sheet. This is K2 and if it's the teacher will if they can't write, they have to highlight they highlight it for them and they have to trace it. And I have witnessed that you all sit down with them and they do it on a onetoone basis and they ask them what they did, why they did it, and they work with them until they can come out with what sometimes they go because they have as youngsters and then they will talk about it and then they will discuss how would you change what you did so you don't end up. So I had talen I had spoken with the K2 uh person that and she says you always had three repeaters but we only have about three in there.

017I don't know as much in 35 but we don't um usually if it's just a slip up or a mess up or something they usually that takes care of it before you get to a write up or detention or something. Also the parent has to sign that document. Okay. If it doesn't come back with the signature, the some teachers automatically call. Mrs. May says for hers if it doesn't come back then she makes the call. So the parent knows that every time it happens and she says she's not ever had one that hasn't come back. So then they have some ownership of it in the the family document. >> Okay. >> Thank you. So, just to wrap everything up, um the document that I had was talking about, you know, supports and what you guys

018can do to support us. Um we're just we are really thankful for the curriculum department. Um they give us some really good PDS. Uh they come in and get really good PLC's. Um they almost break it down to where, you know, it's really easy to understand and implement and it's not just one more thing. they make it relevant to us. Um, and we're thankful for like the availability with, you know, anytime I call Mr. Alexander, he helps me, takes care of things. Same thing with curriculum department. Same thing with a lot of the directors. Um, without those supports, there's no way we could get stuff done that we could. Um, facility improvements. Um, you guys gave us all new windows in the building and they're amazing. Um, and the blinds are even better. We love

019the blinds. Um the ones in the one building even open up like a big door. So we we kind of like those. So um uh and then we do we did get new roofs on buildings one, three, and five so far. So um the other two, you know, were were replaced earlier for the three years, but we do have that. Um, some things I was talking to Daniel about my custodian, you know, we did get the upgrades to the sinks and the bathrooms and all of that stuff, too. I didn't listen to any of that. So, um, just some needs we have. Um, we we do need another cafeteria table. Um, I talked to Lisa about it, but we put these tables up and down five times a day, I think. I think it's five

020times a day because this is our gym, so they break very easily. Um, if you've seen our daytime custodians, she's not as big as a minute and they um are hard for her, but we are missing one. Um, it just flat when she put it down one day, it just completely collapsed. So, we could really use a cafeteria table. Um, we are thankful for our covered walkways, but they really do need a good cleaning and repaired and sealed. um you know with the ice and stuff it's not helpful but with it um it leaks especially right here at the 23 building we had to put a rug over the ice because we would ship it away but then you know it would come so they are really um uh they do kind of need repaired.

021Um the lawn mower guys ran into one of them too and it's kind of offkilter so we kind of need that. Um we do have a number of plumbing work orders. Um they there's some parts that they said that needed to be ordered. Um especially with our four or five bathrooms um and toilets are leaking and things like that. Um if we could get those fixed, I don't think it would cause bigger problems. So that and then I always ask you for a gym. So I'm gonna ask I'm gonna ask you [laughter] again for a gym. So um you know We would love a gym. Um, >> that's on my [clears throat] paper from last year. >> Yes. Yes. >> Before that, >> you know, for I think it was Dennis that said Brad needed

022to come in his wrestling gear, but he couldn't make it again tonight. So, we'll blame it on him for the reason he we're not yet. But I always ask for a just because that's like our >> our gold star. But we understand things are like they are and we we'll make do. But I just always do ask for questions. So, but that is our presentation. Is there any questions that you would have for me with the group feel like like you said your curriculum team comes in and helps and the ECATs are obviously helpful in working out for you. So, yeah. >> And the interventionist this year. >> Yeah. >> They've been really helpful. >> Very helpful. >> And the uh the scores are encouraging. Yes. >> So, it's good to see what's being accomplished

023and it seems like some real progress has been made. >> Yeah. With the um the PD that Mr. Alexander has done with us on PLC's, we have completely reframed and um at first they were like more stuff. But it, you know, it's not they're coming into my office on Tuesdays and wanting to show me what they've been doing and the growth the kids have made. I mean, kindergarten's right there. And um we had a little girl in our 1% come and she got all five of her sight words two weeks ago and she was dying to come and tell me that. So um >> I know I know. So um it is with the turnaround that you know he exposed me to and I came back and changed things. We really um we're really seeing

024a difference and it seems to be working. So that's what So now, yeah, and we're think we're being more intentional about what we're teaching and assessing and then using that to plan for what we need to do from there. So So yeah. >> Very good. >> So you put together the the um group that evaluates and picks different kids that may need different services. How do you how do you do that? You just you had the teachers with the certain kids that they come to the meeting with and then you all collaborate or >> Yeah. So we they'll come with their data and we'll talk about it and then we sit and you know if it's a kid that just didn't get a skill we'll talk to our interventionist and say or our ECAT and

025say can you pull them and see what it is. Now, if it's a kid that repeatedly every week is missing that skill, we'll refer them to SAT and then do interventions through SAT. If those don't work, then we, you know, think about referring them for testing or something like that. But in SAT, we meet with their parents and the teachers and the EPATs and anybody that wants to talk about refer. And um we we really have worked hard this year coming up with accommodations to help or interventions to help these kids, you know, be successful. So, >> benchmarks show that whatever it is, it's seems to be working well. >> They work really hard. So, they're working really hard. Yes. Very happy. I'm a happy principal. [laughter] Very good. >> Yes. >> Any other questions,

026concerns, observations, >> comments? Seems like you guys covered it off. Great. Thank you. >> Thank you very much. >> Is there anything that you want us to look at or anything that we need to see that's other than I mean the walkways and things we've seen? We know that those need to be but >> yeah um I seem like >> you all know anything that I don't >> Okay. >> [laughter] >> All right. Well, we can move on to our new business. We just have a few other things to wrap up real quick. Consider for approval the minutes of the regular board meeting on pages one through six. >> Motion to approve. >> Motion by Jonita. >> Second by Randy. Questions or concerns? >> All in favor? I >> I >> Any opposed? Motion carries

0275 to zero. New business, separate action, consider for approval the amendment uh to the comprehensive educational facility plan. >> And so what this is is in our comprehensive educational facilities plan. It called for the uh consolidation of Genanoa and Dunlow at a new school site based upon the board's vote on January 28th. The language in the uh comprehensive educational facilities plan has been uh changed to to reflect a closure. Uh the state board has to approve that as well when they vote on um the U board's recommendation for closure. Do you have a motion? >> Motion by Donita. Second. Dennis, any questions or concerns on that amendment to our CFP? None heard. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries. 5 to zero. Superintendent reports. >> Yeah, just a couple quick things. Some

028purchases we're going to have coming up on future agendas. Um, we are we have uh torn down some bleachers at Wayne High School. I think I mentioned this before, but we're closer now uh to actually uh me bringing the purchase to you for approval. Matter of fact, I think it'll be on your next regular meeting. We're going to purchase four sets of bleachers. Uh two will go uh or actually three sets will go on the baseball field at Wayne High School and then another set will go on the softball field at the uh at the high school as well. So, that's coming up. And then um we're also working on getting pricing. Uh Tulsa's lights at their baseball field are um I think I mentioned this before, they're kicking the breakers and we need to

029shift to LED lights. The problem with shifting to LED lights is that the current poles are not high enough in the air for to safe safely operate LED lights. So, we're looking at replacing the light poles and then getting those new lights up. I think it's going to I think we'll be able to do that probably for about $80,000, which is a pretty good price. So, we're working on getting all that together. Now, our next big project that we'll be looking at, and when I say big, relatively speaking, it's not big, but we've got to do we've got a water line that has to be repaired at Spring Valley High School baseball field. We also have to repair drainage on the football field and drainage behind the bleachers there. It's going to become a real

030problem if we don't get it fixed. So, we're working on the uh specifications right now so we can get those out for bid and then I'll be bringing them to you. >> That's [clears throat] all I have. >> Anyone else? >> Motion to adjourn. MOT take up step up or something. >> Second by Randy. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries. 5 to zero and it is 429. >> Okay. When I'm gone or y'all just going to keep on having the meeting? >> Yeah, that's what I figure. We're just staying for days, not knowing what to do. >> Hang out forever. >> It is 4:29. Okay. >> February 11th. >> Okay. >> It'll be on their agenda February 11th. >> Yeah. I've got to go up.
