001fo e e e the the slide yeah Oscar actually has it like to call the meeting AUD please can we please stand up for a pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence I pledge allegiance to the flag United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all would you please remain standing for a moment of silence for our young men and women here and overseas in our armed service especially our former students thank you the RO accomplish Miss Ferris here miss dla Mr Jones here Mr Mahia Mr Mercedes Mr toox here Mr haam here a pleasure to give these to Mr lvo special outstanding students everybody tonight we're going to recognize three students who have demonstrated some really outstanding achievements just
002par particularly on the last couple weeks uh or within the last month or so in some very special accomplishments and I am going to have their advisors or their coach recognize them and tell us a a little bit about who they are and what they've accomplished so we're going to do start off with the uh two skills USA uh winners who won one w a gold medal and a bronze medal in uh state competition and we'll be going on to Nationals to compete and I Christine Smith is going to uh give us a little tell us a little bit about them and uh explain what the competition was about and I do want to say we're very proud of your accomplishments I I looked at uh your projects and where I was extremely impressed not
003only with the workmanship but the uh creativity and the detail that you did take extremely amount of talent and skill to accomplish what you did in terms of the welding uh that doesn't happen without really being highly skilled and uh I think you're going to make a lot of money doing welding in your life so congratulations to both you gold medal and silver medal congratulations quite an accomplishment yes so um we have franelle and we have um galani and um they're both juniors in metal fabrication um what was very interesting and cool for them is that they're really good friends and franchelle who won the gold medal got a score of and galani who got the silver medal got a score of 977 so there was a three-point difference between the two of them between
004the gold and the silver and then from the second place winner to the third place winner was a difference of 40 points so these two young ladies really kind of swept the fields at the competition um so franchel was the Gold Medal winner so she gets to go represent the state of Massachusetts and greater Lawrence in Atlanta Georgia and then because it was such a close competition and they were um they're such good friends um she was invited to attend as well and through our registration process galani was invited to be a National voting delegate um so again representing greata Lawrence and um representing uh the state of Massachusetts as well um a little fun fact that if franchel wins a national medal she will be our only National Medal winner that we've ever had
005ever so the last time we had an individual going for a medal was maybe 2010 uh we've had team medals but um never in an individual competition so this would would be a very big honor um if she does succeed so we're working for it and she's working very hard um her do you want to talk about your project tell me project um I'll talk say just just about my project so um um my project is based off of like just okay sorry um my project is based off of like something that I wanted people to know about me but not just give too much off um I'm a very like I'm a very honest person when it comes to talking about myself and since I saw that the requirement was no limit I just
006I assumed I was like oh like I might as well just talk about myself like there's no actual rule for it so I just went on and I told a little bit about my story and a little bit about my background and just my Uprising and it was a really good way to express me so she created a welding sculpture um based on the inspiration from Alice and Wonderland which was a childhood movie that you know really inspired her and touched her and that was what her sculpture represents so and then franch I'm sorry galani one time yours so my project was about bonsai trees and I've always just looked up to Boni trees about how elegant they are and how they represent a lifelong dedication lifelong process and it really does take like years
007almost decades to take care of fully growth a bonsai tree and that's what I wanted to represent towards my project connecting a bonsai tree to my life and representing how how how I had to make lifelong dedications and I had to fully um what's what's the word when you say like oh I had to fully invest in myself for like many years to like become the person that I am now and I just really like the idea of how my project first became scrap metal and then I turned it into like a beautiful sculpture which I compared it to myself how I was at first one person and I grew up to be a nice independent woman nice job thank you thank you [Applause] are her parents here are their parents here no they right
008[Music] Mrs Ferris you got something to say yeah I just want to say um you know congratulations girls and uh Christine um very impressive the thought process that went into it um your whole the inspiration that you had for it and I you know I couldn't be happier I wish you had twins and um all your friends that you know maybe you can uh encourage others to get that same inspiration to be the best that they can be and show themselves off in the state so thank you for that and best of luck and we have another uh recognition tonight of a young man that's been competing all year uh as a track both indoor and outdoor as a comp amazing uh feat as a uh hurdler which is one of the highly skilled uh
009competitions or event that you can have in the in track as a long distance Runner myself I used to say anyone can do that probably running two miles uh but any case we're very proud of him he's accomplished a lot he's going on to compete at the national level and we' like him to be recognized uh this after uh this evening this coaches this coaches come up and and give tell us a little bit about him tell us his accomplishments and U talk a little bit about his future thank you guys for having us we appr appreciate that this is elado right here he's a junior which outstanding young man he started his career as a freshman when he was a freshman coming out for us in indoor track coach du's here as well and
010then Mr Nelson's back there as well thank you man um outstanding young man he's from Lawrence uh from one of the districts we have he's from Lawrence and his parents are here uh he's very accomplish very smart very intelligent he's got both ends of it he's athletically gifted and he puts the time in for athletics which kind of goes hand inand with this young man he's going to be a very successful young man at the if he continues this path uh we've seen him as a freshman when he first came out uh very athletic we didn't know where we're going to find a spa a place for him to run he could do anything I think it was coach duie that said M let's try him in the hurdles did the the hurdles probably two
011or three days after that we got him in his first meet and PR and beat Everybody by a long distance and he's only G better since then his hard work his dedication everything that he puts into it has paid paid off because he's I think we sent you the information on him and what his accomplishments are this year and they're outstanding we'll recognize him today for the 300 state championship in indoor track so he was a champ state champion indoor track this past uh couple of weeks we did the uh States in outdoor track he qualified in three events for States you usually don't see that with an individual he placed in every one of them and in uh the all states he came in 14th in 110 hurdles in the state of Massachusetts uh
01221st and the uh 400 hurdles and he qualified to go to the Nationals so I can't say enough about this young man he's just a great kid that uh works hard uh just epitomize is what we want for our kids of just hardworking academically athletically and I'm very proud of him uh coach dubie would say a couple of words he's his uh hurdle coach um as far as his coach like he's doing all the work what what little I could do for him is if I wish I had 100 kids like him uh athletically but I I like to talk about um I've had Alzado in the classroom freshman year now junior year and as hard as he's worked uh outside the classroom and on the sports field he works just as hard in in
013the classroom and I think that just it carries over he's just a very motivated kid he's a great kid um and um I've been blessed to have him a couple years in the classroom and for football for track for everything he's just a great kid to work with so I can't say enough about him he's outstanding [Applause] the the 300 meter that running that day meant a lot to me cuz I was not only representing the school and all my classmates and and teammates but I was also representing my my people my family and my coaches and the state of Lawrence as a whole the state of Massachusetts as a whole um going to the National level I'm I can't lie I'm pretty nervous but but this is a good thing um my brother was
014a track star and he's the one that really got me into doing these events when I run at Nationals I'll be making sure that I keep in mind everybody at this school my family and most importantly my brother that's that's all I have to [Applause] say noty to be a it's all all by yourself when you're what SP one two [Music] you one two three congratulations what did your brother do what did he run oh what did you run coach sarus coach sakas was the brother one of ours was the brother one of ours great fantastic welcome back and we have brother AC oh yeah no pressure on him right make us proud guys thank you uh man here for get we have a young man from The Eagle Scouts here uh who's got an
015award he's in the back someplace can I get a motion from one of the members to move it up to can I get a second thank you any discussion thank you want to do that now sure so uh this evening we have a young man uh who's working on his Eagle Scout badge and uh Eagle getting to Eagle Scout to to the point where you can work towards an Eagle Scout badge is a huge accomplishment been working as a scout for 7 years now what it seven years uh so that's been a huge commitment in his life something that's been important to him and in order to uh get that Eagle Scout badge he has to do a community project and he has uh presented the project to myself uh that he'd like to do
016something on on the school's property and I told him in order for him to uh be able to do that he needs permission of the school committee uh because it's on our grounds and it'll be in the front of the school so uh I asked him if he'd want to do a presentation and have the school committee vote on allowing him to work on uh do the project I will uh be one of his mentors being a carpenter myself I told him I'd I'll be part of it and he's going to he's got a team of young people that'll uh as a eagle scout uh candidate he needs to be able to oversee other uh Scouts and other people within the community to help him with this project and I told him I'd be happy
017to help him and uh kind of really feel proud that I can even do something like that for a young man like this he's really impressive and uh so he's going to present to you his uh proposal and then um we'll ask the committee to vote to allow him to uh move forward on that project thank you I think we have do you have a slide yep Whitaker why don't you tell us um a little bit about yourself uh and what shop you're in uh what inspired you a little bit to work so hard to get to this level thank you so I'm Whitaker young and I'm from biotech and I'm a junior and what inspired me to do this was because glts is my community and I feel that um it's some it's somewh
018I want to give back to so this was my idea for that um so motiv other motivations for this project is also CU whenever I have to go out there to wait after school it could be raining sometimes or it could be um harsh sun or snowing and I want to give people a a safe place to stand and stay to um be able to stay safe from the elements being able to wait outside instead of having to stay inside I also thought that since glts is a technical school there are plenty of professionals who could give uh me and other students uh help on this project and also give students additional educational opportunities so this is the front of the school school right now uh the part that I would like to um build
019my um project which will be um rain shelters uh because that's where all the buses usually come after school and this is what it will kind of look like which will cover the benches but also give students a place to stand if they don't have any more room on the benches these are the um D the rough Dimensions that I've drawn up for it and here's some dimensions of um space between the benches to give people space that both stand but also to be able to get out if they're standing in the back this is a rough timeline of my project so from now to Summer it would be getting all approvals finished and getting all permits um needed and then plan fundraiser to raise money to get materials for the project and then around
020the start of the school year um we start the fundraiser and get the money to buy the necessary materials and so on and so forth um there will be a lot of inspections as well and it should be done around um February 3rd sometime in February I wanted to use um helical peers because we had um the ericon company a while back put some in for our deck and they're really um time effective way of putting because you can put them in like it takes a day to put them in as a foundation instead of using concrete footings um only problem is that is um expensive and it requires specialized um trainers or equipment and installers but it is very time effective especially in a project that I feel kind of has that aspect of
021time and the these were are kind of what it would look like so it's kind of like a screw that they would screw in and um keep the foundation stable and this is kind of what it would look like installing a helical pier and I also was kind of nervous for um failures though I would doubt that there would be any kind of um mistakes just the eventuality one this is a very long-term um solution to a foundation is very tough and stable um I'm happy to answer any questions if you have any will you be doing much fundraising for the project so I do plan that the tools um could be provided by glts um however um things like the helical peers will need to be bought so or materials um so yeah I
022would plan for the fundraiser to pay for some of those materials that otherwise wouldn't be like accessible uh speaking for of materials um I did forget to tell that the plan is to um have like metal bars um to as the frame and then have polycarbonate sheeting as like the windows So the plan could change from that um depending on what happens yes what year are you in junior what troop are you in troop 25 Manchester Connecticut very good we wish you luck can't wait to see it thank you no further questions Mr lvo so um Mr Mah so I love the idea it's a great idea U the project is very aligned to what um what it would look outside so aside from glts and the eagle scout what inspired you to do this
023project personally personally just standing outside in the rain cuz I would like to be outside when my dad actually comes and not have to wait inside to like get a text or something for when he does come I just think it would be more convenient for it to be outside and it could also add to the um actual uh appealing of the school how it looks welcome sorry we're just getting questions so we would uh entertain a motion to allow Whitaker to uh do this project so we would need school committee to vote on approving uh the pro approving him doing it on the school grounds I would make a motion in favor project second any discussion thank you they're going to vote they didn't vote yet they just put a motion I want you
024to be here here to vote Miss TLA yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr toox yes M Barris yes Mr hayum yes well done you got a unanimous vote Laker good job we're proud of you thank we look forward to [Applause] working all right now down to business uh can I get a motion to approve the minutes of May 7th motion to approve the minutes as presented second any discussion call the vote Mr toox yes M Barris yes M dler yes m Mr Jones yes Mr Mia yes EXC me Mr Jones has to abstain no I'm sorry he has to abstain he was absent and that you weren't at the last meeting were you left to obain Mr haum yes okay cash balance report Mr Stefano sure the cash balance report as of April
02530th 2024 count balance on March 31st was 3,424 8639 we had deposits for the month of 3,620 63278 a transfer in of uh from mmdt of a million less payroll on April 11th of 1,1 57010 another payroll on April 25th 1,122 35055 warrant number 27 on April 9th 486 689 67 and warant number 28 on April 23rd of 1,453 27232 leaves us with the book balance on April 30th of 3,828 610 1053 and a corresponding bank balance uh same day of 4,664 0791 um in our mmdt account we started off with 7,239 15555 um the interest um accured for the month was 31,5 18 less than million dollars to the operating account leaves us with an mmdt balance of 6,270 7673 and a corresponding total C I mean uh total operating cash balance of 10,99
02637126 thank you can I get a motion to approve the cash balance report is presented motion to approve as presented second second any discussion do the vote Please Mr Mahia yes Mr tbox M Baris M dla yes Mr Jones yes Mr hayum yes Consolidated cash we have the report it's a handout informational revolving fund report everybody has the handout on that there's no vote on that budget report informational and budget transfers we'll need to vote on that anybody have any questions on the budget transfer reports Miss ditel please um yeah sorry I did what is this okay I had the wrong light uh light thank you m here um I just one some explan I just want to understand other instructions service skills account what is that what is that account for because it's showing
027twice um and and it doesn't look related to what the transfer were is that um is that journal entry 83 it's up in the right hand corner so is it the the skills USA H is it the skills USA yes okay so we have we so what does that account for the the other instructional Services yes we actually budget for skills expenses so it's for the skills USA competition for for the okay for the uh um Sports uh for skills it's for um it's for CTE but then there was money transfer right from there to Administration and to travel so I understand the travel what about the administration open house so there was just residual funds there that I just moved to the skills account because they need extra additional funding there for open house
028I took it I took it away from open house there was just a little bit of money left over on open house so we had already had the open house so I knew there weren't any more expenses coming in there so I moved just the residual funding that was left there up to the skills USA line so they could cover some additional expenses there so I added I added the $7,000 for skills USA okay and then you added more um also on another line from this to the same account 12,000 Y and that came from Principal instruction something which I also have a question on that one so that came from contingency so we kind of use that account like if there's additional funding sometimes we move it into contingency to hold it until we
029know like where the what other accounts might need okay so that then because you have um two other credit coming out of the same account contingency yes yep so I I didn't understand that so I just use it I I really just use contingency to like to hold some additional funding that we might have like at the beginning of the year if there's Staffing changes or whatnot once we load all those changes into the system sometimes I see overages on Staffing lines so I'll remove that additional funding and put it into contingencies so we can reallocate it across the budget wherever we might need it later it's just a way to manage manage the spending okay I mean I'm un questioning it because if you read the other ones there help uh for example health
030career so it's it's the money is coming from the same type account this I couldn't understand because there wasn't a relation between the two accounts that were the money was were being transferred okay um thank you any other questions uh can I get a motion to approve the budget transfers motion to approve second by Mr Ferris any further discussion we call the vote Please Mr tbox Miss Ferris yes M dler yes Mr Jones yes Mr hayum yes Mr Mahia yes donations on behalf of the glts particularly the information technology Department thank you for your generous donation of the Dell Inspiron one an all-in-one desktop computer donated by Mrs Barbara Burch of hail Mass second one on behalf of great technical particularly the plumbing department thank you for your generous donation of $240 for Scholarships in
031the amount of $1 120 each for our two seniors Christopher petralia and leis Sanchez donated by Jay Gomez Pro Services of methan thank you very much and we have some articles I'm sorry Mrs feris okay I was at the uh awards ceremony and yes there were a lot of scholarships being given out as did this go to that the scholarship money here okay I'm I'm I'm just wondering uh because it hasn't happened I am wondering why people who give scholarship money give students money they're not giving they're not receiving any acknowledgement like a thank you like the book anything and you know it's a nice gesture you know the kids get the money and hey you know what my kid got the money I was very conscious of hey you know this money didn't just
032fall from the ceiling you know where did it come from all you don't you don't have to take it that far but something from the guidance office acknowledging that you know John Doe uh donated so much money now that was a bone of contention of mine um it's been I've been out of here eight years nine years I've donated all nine years never received any acknowledgement so if I don't guaranteed no one else has and I just don't think that that is a good practice so I'm wondering what do I have to do to make that a practice here at glts so I can speak to that Miss varis um so we are actually sending those out with the extra books that we have from this year's award ceremony um and I I will acknowledge
033that it's been inconsistent in the past sometimes we send out letters for people who request the donations with the tax ID number um I think it has been inconsistent we did try a couple of years to give the the students um envelopes addressed to the donors and ask them to um write the thank you notes and give them back to us and that wasn't very successful I would like to do that more um so I do apologize for not getting um that acknowledgement but we are doing that this year with the the books and trying to send them out to all of the donors I mean you know look I I have donated more in the past when I brought it to someone's attention it still didn't matter so it hasn't it hasn't happened so
034I guess inconsistent isn't the word non-existent would be better stated it just never happened until I made another when I said I wasn't going to donate again and and it's not a big deal I I don't do it to get a recognition but I just think it's a good practice that the school a an individual person not a company an individual person donates to the students here I don't even know and there are several others that donated as well that I think you know from their hearts donating to kids to to to give them that Head Start and I think and I've said this before it it just fell on deaf ears no matter who was there who was behind the desk it fell on deaf ears so um I I want it to be
035a practice because I mean people feel as though hey you know what I don't even need to thank you it's just an acknowledgement greater Lawrence acknowledges these letters in here great you don't even have to go that far just acknowledge greater Lawrence Tech students appreciate your generosity period it's I would have been happy with a copy of the book so you know it's a big thing for me because it's been nine years and and I have to make an exception to that because honestly it was one secretary who actually sent me a book book so I honestly it's not it's it's not something everybody says they're going to they're going to get to it they're going to get to it and it has not happened so I mean I want it to happen I was
036just going to say that um this just kind of came to light in my office and um we are I am working with administrators on a a process for acknowledging all donations so that the donors do receive an acknowledgement letter for their um tax records so uh what we I can sit down with uh Melissa Brenda and myself and we can look at what's the best approach to ensure that we do a better job next year in recognizing people who donate to the students on our own behalf as well as try to figure out a way that we can hold the students accountable to also and it's not so much it's just to teach them that the uh it's the right thing to do recognize people when you receive something an award or or someone's
037uh giving you something uh that's going to make a difference in uh your life and they show some kind of uh concern that they want to help you in life that you should uh recognize their um the donation and in the fact that they care about you so I uh will 100% agree that that should happen and that uh moving forward we'll make sure we do a better job at it questions Mrs Ferris would you like to put that in a motion and we'll make sure we get this done if you'd like me to I I I would I I I personally agree with you I would like you to do it but who am I so I would like any um any donations coming into the school that the doners receive some kind of
038recognition or acknowledgement not recognition acknowledgement for Their donation to the school and the school meaning students whatever school school Community second second motion you call the RO call please M Ferris yes M TLA Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr toox yes Mr haam yes on a personal note Mrs Ferris I did see some lettuce thank you lettuce for these two and I have seen them in the past but I know some have been missing so thank you very much um articles four year of perfection great La senior boys finished career undefeated in dual meets coaches want to speak to that coach Mike nothing we have the article and you can all read the article coach sakis God bless so coach sakis you give him a microphone it's all over uh yeah that that's an
039incredible accomplishment there we have a couple coaches that are on that's sitting there and that you understand that uh the commitment and the the hard work that these kids put in to go those seniors never losing a dual meet is incredible uh the the triban did a great article on that you guys take some time to read that I think you'd appreciate the hard work and effort that our kids put in and it's a testament to the uh the support that we get here Mr leoy himself is a is a track uh athlete U Mr Nelson helped us out tremendously putting a good program together the the fields are outstanding and we see a direct correl by the support that we have from top to bottom makes a big impact on our kids and for
040them to kind of do that we're very proud of them and uh I can't say enough about their hard work and dedication and you and your support to help in that endeavor thank you [Applause] guys I want to thank the coaches first of all for the time and effort they put in in ensuring that the students uh do as well as they do um doesn't happen without good coaching and and a commitment from the coaches to uh be there for students who are working hard every day and uh congratulations to the coaches to the team um being a a track person myself I know there's no harder sport than track when you're out there running and uh there's no it's a a one it's a team sport but it's also an individual sport that uh
041when you're competing uh and your gut hurts and you're you know you're in pain but you still give it you're all it's always not that easy so congratulations to the whole team and to do it four years in a row dual meets uh that's just an amazing feat uh so congratulations with that I don't think we've ever had that before so that's quite an accomplishment thank you thank you coaches uh we don't have any public participation we do have a request from the town of andova and I believe we have attorney Wayne Simmons attorney for the school um here to join us always good to see you Mr Simmons mrar you want to put the drawing up that you should have uh the who has the slides thees you have the the slides for yeah
042it should be the first the slide of the blueprint so uh while they're bringing up the slide if you remember I believe it was last year sometime uh had presented to the committee uh a request from the town of Andover uh for an easement down as you know there's a a dirt road that uh is on our uh left side of the school property line there that takes you all the way down to the river and that the town was looking for an easement in order to widen the road which they would be utilizing taking some of our property as as well as utilizing the parking lot we built uh putting in a parking lot down by phase four of our field project the last phase we're doing uh it is cut out but they
043would need to upgrade that parking lot so uh the whole point of uh of the road widening the road and improving the road and they would uh is to uh be able to allow members of the town and and also the school to utilize a uh the river uh for recreation purposes for boating and uh there's a boat house down by the river that's only thing standing is it's a metal steel frame um we've met with the I've spoken to the town several times it would be a project that the school would take on to uh finish construction of that boat house uh and then also putting docks putting docks in the water uh would be uh also um a part of the project so in exchange for giving the easement to the town uh
044the town would give us uh so they're looking for a 25-year easement agreement and in exchange would uh give us 25 years approval to access to docks our for uh programs voting programs for glts as we look to possibly doing a crew a crew uh uh program someday and also Al as part of that four uh slips uh four spaces in the boat house to keep our boats which the idea would be to share with our uh sending communities so that we could promote uh crew uh program in in our sending communities um in order to do that we need permission from the school committee and uh approving us going into an agreement uh with the town for that easement and I think there's oh want I want to show you a drawing of it
045so you can see what I'm talking about as far as the easeman is concerned I'll just add on top of that this is this is I know there's a lot of new members this is dating back to 2017 uh the town of vova requested that we start this project this is actually phase two uh many of you may know we swapped a piece of land outside River Road to make the initial entrance that swap has taking place at this point now we're just widening the existing easement and also granting access to the to the parking lot that's above the soccer field um and in exchange for that as uh superintendent Lavoy mentioned we're going to swap a 25-year right to use the boat house which is part uh phase three of the project um so
046that won't take place for some time but that's the the long-term plan Tony Simmons do you see any drawbacks for us for this I don't um we we uh dotted the eyes and crossed the teas uh back in 2017 when this originally uh came up uh the primary protection we have uh from legal liability which is the major concern is insurance so the town of Andover um will initially get a $3 million insurance policy as well as a $5 million um uh overall policy to cover any potential issues that may have may not occur on that um other than that it's land that isn't being used where widening an existing easement that we can't use for any other purpose anyway the intent of the easement in my understanding way back when was was to access
047the river unfortunately it wasn't wide enough and the access on River Road wasn't correct enough to be able to have a a car actually go on the road so this by widening the easement will allow cars to access the road and to have parking up back which will be less interference the original plan if if you may recall was to come through the parking lot so uh we initially said no to that we thought that was a larger legal issue and we arrived at this point which I think is a much more beneficial plan any questions for attorney Simmons in in this project we would also be giving them an easement to put a pipe under the road for drainage for the road to have some drainage as well and a um a retaining Pawn
048they would also be uh putting in a retaining PA PA out where our phase four field is to take the drainage uh the water that runs off the new field we're doing as long as well as some of the wetlands over there as a place to uh retain the a runoff of water as uh which we would have had to do but by having them do it it's going to save us a lot of money as well as upgrade our our parking lot down there which would be beneficial to us when we open up that phase four field so there's a lot of benefits to the school and a lot of benefit to the community as well um and I think Wayne explained that there's going to be a new exit off that road onto
049River Road as well as part of this uh commitment on the town's part and as the superintendent indicated there if it wasn't clear they're absorbing all the cost for the project so we're just granting the easement yep so there's that's a benefit to all of us uh and uh I think the town's been extremely good to us the last couple of years uh every time I call them for any support on anything they've been there for us just an example every uh time we every graduation they let us use their parking lot in the back of our school there for uh extra parking for graduation I call the town and they're always they open the gates and make sure everything is uh easy for us to access so they've been uh very helpful with everything
050we've tried to do and and putting in all our uh Fields um our new buildings they don't charge us anything for uh fees for uh permits for any of the anything we do on the property which is a huge savings to the school uh cuz some of the projects are worth um millions of dollars like the project is going up now for 5.5 million we're not paying any uh fee for that would be over $25,000 if we were paying construction uh permit fees so they've been they've been good to us so uh I personally think it would be a great thing for our kids to be able to start a program like that they they would never have an option uh opportunity in maybe in their life to participate in such an an activity so
051uh I think would be a positive thing for our students and for our community and showing that um uh that we care about uh our community in general Mrs Ferris are we still discussing or can I make a motion you can make a motion on if you had a question I thought you might have had a question anybody have a question M dler I thought you was I was going to get a presentation of this so is this it this this is it yes because I know as you mentioned before M Mr um Lavoy we discussed this not long ago and we were not in in agreement that this was a good idea for the school so so now it's everything's reversed again I'm unfortunately I don't have a memory of all the details that
052we spoke about um and I didn't have time I just flew up from a vacation last night so I didn't have time to go and go back to my notes um so I was hoping that there was a going to be a presentation and the co the pros and con count of doing this is meant with the town of Andover but if that's not the case I know I'm not going to go for it because I need to refresh myself to what we spoke about um before in two occasions we spoke about this whole um thing and I know that we said that it wasn't convenience for this school again I know today you guys are saying it is but I need to go back to my notes and again I'm speaking for myself M
053so uh when we talked about it the last time I don't think we ever said it wasn't a good thing for the school what we said wasn't good for the school is they wanted a 100y year 99 year easement to utilize the road but they were only going to give us a 25e easement to utilize the docks and the boat house so I said to the committee I think it's a great I really believed it was a great thing even then but I didn't think it was reasonable or Fair of the town to expect us to give them 99 years years when they were only going to give us 25 years went back to the town and told them if the only what if you're going to give us 25 years we're only get the
054only thing that the committee was interested they would only consider giving you 25 years so they reconsidered and came back and said we'll give we're only looking for 25 years they'll give us 25 years and in 25 years we can reassess whether it's working well and we want to continue the partnership so it wasn't that we didn't think it was a good idea always thought it was a good idea and a great opportunity for the kids but not unless the town was going to be fair with us and treat us respectfully by giving us the same as what they were expecting and and they did come around and agree to that Mr Ferris I mean if I if I understands correctly it's it's not going to really impact our property um but in essence help
055us in certain phases of the development of the fields back there yeah so I know I know I think I know exactly what you're talking about and I don't think that that's again going to impact this property what I am not in favor of of is this school even thinking of bringing on another program such as crew um in the near future so that would be a whole different vote the opportunity is there um whether we take that opportunity or not doesn't doesn't really matter but I think what's important is that the option for us to utilize that facility down there whether we use it for our environmental science program or whether we use it for our construction program or whatever opportunities we may have other than a crew program um having access to the
056river down there I think is a positive thing for us and also uh having a a a road down there that's of higher quality which is important also for the fire department and emergency ambulances and things that are going to go down to the field right now so once that's upgraded when an ambulance has to get down to phase four for an emergency or even phase three for the uh where the softball field is they can get there more easily and more quickly and so that's a very positive thing as well as well as for the and a big thing what's also important to the town is that the fire department could get down to the river if there were an emergency at the river in the river right now they have a very hard
057time to get their emergency vehicles down to the river so that's another reason why it's important to the town and I think important for us to support the town and trying to do something that benefit benefits the community it sounds like a wind because they're going to widen the road and everything will it be gated at all there's a discussion if you want there is a discussion gate the front end um and we're trying to work with uh the DPW on the best way to approach that okay so once the easements in it'll be gated so you can control who goes down there will there be any access from the school property like you you're blocking off the public but if you're on the school property there's a current gate yeah so there will be
058it'll be gated that no anybody can't get on the road but they'll also be fencing along our property and there'll be a gate off our property to the road but then they're uh also access off of River Road to the to road so they don't have to come on our property so the people from the right now to get on that road they have to access it from our property but once it's done they will not have to access it from our property property and that's what this change HED to address which was the largest issue before all right and was this an older easement and they're just redoing it or this has never happened before there's an original easement a 10 foot wide easement which is completely impractical so we're granting the additional lead
059to widen the roadway to allow ambulance fire traffic Etc and that was one of the big holds up holdups initially just to remind the commit please raise your hands when you're ready to ask uh get a question in um try to get him in order any further questions for Mr Simmons attorney Simmons Mr TI about the insurance who's the grantee the grantee is the endover uh Conservation Commission so they are holding the insurance yes okay thank you sir attorney Simmons do you have any comment on what Miss ditler was uh talking about as far as drawbacks from last time I I the one draw back superintendent Lavoy indicated was the uh they originally wanted Perpetual unlimited easement and that was a big hold up uh after the the initial discussion once they agreed to back
060down to 25 years that Sol most of the issues uh at that time and you're comfortable with this now I am I am this is kicked around uh for some time and over changeed Council recently so there was about a year delay uh and this the recent drafts um again are almost six months old so I I think the town's interested in getting this back on track questions can we get a motion oh sorry Mr LaVoy I just want to just want to say one last thing I think I think it's important to I I think one of the reasons to vote Yes on this is to continue to uh strengthen our relationship in our partnership with the town of Handover who also supports our emergency with police and fire and you know they do
061good things for us the police officer we only pay half the salary the town pays the other half we have a as you know our school officer so they're also good to us that way so they're you know they're very uh they feel like we're part of their community and they treat us that way so I think I mean for that reason I also think it's you know important that we show um that we value that relationship Mr Simmons I think that's all we have for you tonight I thank you very much for coming I'm sorry Mr I want to make a a motion okay one second please thank Mr Simmons thank you very much for your advice M Ferris please okay I want to make a motion to approve the request from the town
062of andova for these any seconds [Music] second discussion Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr tbox Miss Ferris yes M TLA no Mr hayum yes moving on to easier things superintendent evaluation so you should have gotten the my evaluation form and um at that point and I sent some uh bullets of uh that might I thought might be helpful in completing the evaluation at this point what we usually do is uh collect the individual evaluations and then uh the uh suali my assistant usually tallies the uh evaluation comes up with one final report um if people need more time then uh you know if the committee wants more time to complete it or wants to call me or meet with me on anything before they complete it that's fine too uh you
063can send it into Susan and then she'll do the final report we just need it done she needs to send it into the Department of Education by July 1st so we still have time if if uh in fact you would like to have more time in completing it uh would anybody need more time than say two weeks it has to be in by July 1st so yeah you said two weeks yeah I said two weeks said two weeks has to be in yeah you need more time all right can we set a deadline how much time do you think you'll need Mr Mercedes exra one extra week that'll give us till when you got a calendar this calendar 11th be the 11th can we get it done by June 11th June ju July 11th I'm
064sorry no it be June wait a minute noit we're in June this is June yeah so it has to be by July it has to be in by July first right I'm out of calendar this is the calendar that's only go 2324 so you're looking at June 24th year today's the 4th a week from now would be the 11th I mean if we had a budy 18th we're fine June 18th for a deadline two weeks two weeks from now I'm not sure you going to be out I I when is this you to be done by well if we get up by the I mean if we get up by the 25th I mean she just has to calculate it and uh and then she will send it into the Department of Education so I
065mean whatever three weeks and I'm you know if anybody would like to come in and go through it with me Ju Just to ask questions or want more evidence uh I'm happy to sit down and have a conversation with anybody with regards to the standards uh let's set a deadline of June 25th enough time yeah that works if you need help I'd be happy to try to take some of the uh confusion out of this for you or uh you can call the office or any need a councilman I'll thank you good I have a question any other questions Mr M please yeah so um I mean it's not related directly to this item but it's related to your contract superintendent um I've requested it multiple times um and I have not gotten it um
066I just got an email today that it requires approval of the district committee um because of a policy that was implemented I don't know when uh but this is not the only document I requested I've requested multiple documents uh and I'm not getting them as a school Committee Member it's like somebody's hoarding the documents um and that shouldn't be the case because superintendent reports to the school committee let's remember that this point of authority if we are asking for a document a contract we should be getting that and we're getting this evaluation now you said July 1st was the due date for for the Department of Ed correct the department deadline okay I'm requesting the contract because aside from what's required by the department of Ed there are terms within the contract regarding the superintendent's
067evaluation and so I'm going to call the motion to have the committee receive a copy of the superintendent's contract and to remove that godamn policy whoever put it to have the district committee approve a request of documents each individual District Committee Member is elected by each of our different towns to represent the community and to hold you accountable and the school accountable so I'm going to put that motion forward thank you to request the superintendent contract to be presented to each uh School Committee Member that's my first motion second any discussion I kind of like I mean to piggy back on that I I kind of like would want job descriptions and contracts of Administrators I don't know that that is a end or a separate first of all policy of the committee has always
068been if you if you request even questions of the committee it had to be done in the school committee meeting and it had to be voted on that's if you remember when Leo was chairing the committee that was the policy of the committee that can change with the policy right if you're requesting materials from the school committee it has to go through the school committee or at least through the chairman of the school committee um to access I have no problem giving and I don't remember you asking me for my contract other than this last time or any other documents do I've given a lot of documents out so to me I don't know what you're talking about when you say you asked for a lot of documents uh I think I've given you everything
069you've asked for other than this and um I'm and I have the contract here which if the committee votes for me to give you the contract I'm F I'm I'm happy to give you my contract and uh and can give you my contract at any time if we want to have a specific date when it's renewed each year happy to give you that contract before it's renewed please free feel free to contact me if you're having any difficulty getting things um right now let's call a vote on what we have on the floor we have a motion on the floor do I have a second we seconded any further discrection and from what I understand these have to go through the committee and the committee just voted to give you the the contract I don't
070see why because it's public knowledge it's got to be someplace but uh we do have the copies the superintendent has the copies and going give everyone a copy can we take a vote a discussion really quick please yeah did you have a second no I just want to discuss it really quick I just want to respond to the superintendent so I requested in previous meetings and I'm referring directly to the contract I've sent emails to your assistant this is the third time this week and I got a response today indicating that any any documents that I requesting I need to go through the school committee even though it's a public record I could make a foer request and get it within 10 days so why don't we just give it there's nothing to hide there's
071nothing to hide it's it's public record so if we are requesting documents if any of us on this table are asking for documents we should get them in a formal manner I shouldn't have to wait 2 weeks 3 weeks months for a contract that's all I'm asking for this is not personal this is I'm trying to represent my community and that's what I was elected to to do I'm trying to review documents I'm trying to do this evaluation but I cannot do that without looking at the contract that's all thank you Miss Ferris yes Miss dla yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr toox Mr haum yes sure well I didn't know if that was I guess that was a separate one so I'm I'm going to make this one a
072separate motion to provide job descriptions and slash contracts for the administrators in the school and that's only a little bit of an exaggeration uh thank you can I add to that motion please I want to add to the motion to amend it I know you yeah okay no no no worries yeah um so in addition to that as I said in in my discussion and thank you superintendent um but any documents that a school Committee Member requests regardless if it's the chair the vice chair or any member of this school committee to be provided no question unless it's a a matter that would go into executive session or I don't know just any document it could be simply a policy I mean anything really that that needs to be accessed that we don't have access
073publicly or online um to get that for any of us thank you I would reconsider that because there are certain things that are public knowledge and certain things that are internal so what I'm referring to isqu to the chair and the chair talk to the committee I'm sure we can get you anything you wanted there's nothing to hide here don't want to hide anything I want to be very transparent but there are things that that I don't know are confidential until until they brought to my attention so what I mean by that follow Channel and just contact the chair I'll contact the rest of the committee if I feel it's necessary or I'll call a meeting I'll just get you the information so yeah so just to respond so the what I'm referring to is
074public records I'm not asking for a personnel file I'm that's not I'm talking about any document of course in exception to what is considered legal or personel related just any document that any individual could request just as um my colleague asked for job discussions that's all it's all it is and I'm making an exception to that I'm not saying I want every any document that we request including stuff that could be legally challenging to us that's not what I'm referring to anything that is public record that I could do with a foyer request that's all Mr lvo so IIA you're you're putting a motion right for that so that that's a motion Tom I want to take care of the first motion that we had did we call a vot on are we all set
075you're not adding those two together did you want to add them two together you're making two separate motions we're getting ahead of ourselves amend well you just you just did one motion there so can I suggest this is a separate they should be separate they should be separate they are separate yes so I my suggestion is to put amendment I just go ahead with the first motion would you read the first motion please to provide job description contracts for 27 administrators in school okay any further discussion on that that should be one that's one motion no anything added to it all right we had a second I second okay any further discussion on that what was the number 27 yes she was just making that up oh I said it's a bit of an exaggeration
076ad whatever the number is yeah I thought you said 27 any further discussion any we call the vot call please Mr tbox yes M Ferris yes Miss dla yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr Hayden yes and Mr Mah you wanted to do a second motion yes would you make that motion please I presented the motion do I need to I don't know if she wrote it down provide documents at a school public documents that a school Committee Member request yes my motion thank you any further discussion can you call a vote please Mr Mercedes yes Mr tbox yes Miss feris yes Miss dla yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr Hayden yes all right we got the easy ones out way I I want to add a motion um
077and it's related to the evaluation obviously because we do need the material in order to work on the eval evaluation um so in addition I would like to get the survey that has been done I suppose it was done as every year for the teachers as a surveys to the teachers um that is done and I know we had in the past presentation of how the results of the survey but I we haven't seen that for a while so I would like to get those those results and the the s it and you know all the information for the for the teachers yeah so uh the panoramic survey is one that we do with the teachers that the principal typically did I'm not even sure that that was done this year because of the situation
078with the would you have it Josh okay so we yeah we can get him a copy of the panoramic survey yep okay a please it's my understanding that some school climate survey was done uh are we um are the results available for this committee that's yeah I'm sorry I didn't that's what I'm asking for oh okay so any the same yeah yeah we could provide any surveys that were done regarding uh by teachers regarding whether it be um the panoramic survey or specific survey for school climate we can certainly provide you with the final results of that so so are the results available if there yeah we'll provide you the results that have been completed y okay and if you know the results typically well okay I'll like that no please I'm sorry I didn't
079mean to catch off no that's it's it's probably a topic for another right put that in a motion and we'll uh yes I have second motion excuse me what can we state it in a motion please so she can write it down I would like to get this survice D um teacher service teacher service with a panoramic or any all the Ser service that had been done um we want to get the details and the report again that's the motion um in addition I just want to mention that we in the past had had presid presentation of the surveys and all um the results with details and graphic we had not had that uh for the past maybe two years I don't know um I don't remember and we should be getting that here um
080a report of that presented besides you know now we have a crunch time where we need them for the evaluation as part of the material that we need the teacher service she wants the mo motion is to receive the teacher surveys again did I have a second second any further discussion Mr Jones how they evaluated no the teacher surveys as the teacher there a bunch of questions that they ask the teachers mostly about the climate of the inside the building the school culture and the teachers answer all and send them all in and they're Anonymous it doesn't go back to the teacher based evaluation anything could be anything in the building okay thank did you second it I did second it I just look I mean when there are surveys like that I mean we're
081here for the kids we're here for the teachers the teachers are as important as as the kids any student facing position is is is Paramount to why I'm here I I mean I just it's it's very important that the climate is as is represented and I am just not sure that it is and that makes a big difference in the success in the progress in in in everything that happens here at 57 River Ro so I would I am very interested to see those results and I don't know that I mean I think that again we shouldn't have to ask I think that what happens in the school that impacts the progress the the the accomplishments or non accomplishments of the school we need to know about I mean I I don't I'm I mean
082that we talk of transparency but yet it's like pulling teeth to get information and I mean I don't want to come here and continually ask for stuff I mean it I don't know it should it should be available I don't want to ask for Stuff either but are you seconding the motion yes I am seconding any further discussion V so was was that another motion did you just put no that was that was to get the information from the surveys teacher surveys okay then I like to put a motion because I kind of can we do this one first let's finish up who we get going first you're getting me confused Mr Mercedes Mr Mia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr tbox yes Miss Ferris yes Miss dler yes Mr Jones yes Mr haam yes now
083Mr mes please so you know really call my attention um hearing um Mrs Farris uh bringing to our attention that you know I kind of do agree with her on that point that she said that if anything that happen within the schope I think should be automatically kind of brought to our attentions and so that we don't have to kind of come here into this meeting and start putting motions for everything that that's you know information that I think that us as a representative of the district should know like coming over here and finding out and then putting a motion to just to hear about it when it should just be it should be we should be informed of this this sort of stuff so we don't have to come over here and and make
08410 motions in one night so we can just get information that we should probably be getting to begin with you know like I I just think that if we put a motion on so just information that sto to happen within the school that that as us as representative of the different District which is being formed rather than coming to a meeting and asking for stuff and putting motion to it so then the next meeting we kind of start hearing about it if we can just kind of move forward in the in the future of being informed some of the stuff we don't have to come up over here and asking this motion that's so if that's big motion of to to kind of let us know this this sort of information so we don't have
085to be requesting if that's something we can put a motion to it then I that I like to put that motion all right Mr Harris yes look just as just as we saw these these students come in here and we you know we were very proud of them and we celebrated them and that was you know and and the coaches and the advisers those are the things those are wonderful things I wish there were more of them and maybe there would be more if people had the motivation and that inspiration to go forward and go beyond I don't know that that's here so just as this has been celebrated I know at a past meeting Miss dla brought up that she would like to know things that happen in the school that aren't so good
086and I personally know of things that uh you know typical School issues that have not been brought to our attention and she already brought that up up and we said we were going to do that and it's not being done she want Miss dla wanted to know of incidences and I think it was in in reference to students not feeling safe or yes okay um and and she asked that things be um told to us if there you know have little questions and um perhaps it's nothing perhaps it's something but she asked that these things be brought to us and I haven't heard a thing officially well may I I know the last time that we met we we were told and I guess that's maybe he's here for that I don't know um that
087we we have uh on the agenda the what's her name the principal the person the discipline discipline um she was supposed to come here and present to us and actually there was some uh pending uh information whether we're going to send the kids to some program when they are in suspension or not and that was pending because she didn't make it last me meeting uh and right now I'm I'm not sure that I saw that in the agenda either so I'm on I'm on the right right track right that's what we're speaking about so um and and to her point and I need to agree with her and I'm being here right now the longest uh we do bring things um where we need information we need presentation we need the head of Department which
088is one something that I always been asking for and still up today we have some head of Department that come in and give us presentation but not enough um but we need those information to come here on a regular basis no when we ask for because you know we have some either calls or um somebody calling our attention to address uh situations and we don't have the information or we don't know what to tell them and when we ask for it we get told yes we're going to bring you the information we're going to send you the information or somebody's going to come and it doesn't happen no as if supposed to it happens sometimes uh but we seem to cut the the court all the time and don't follow up and that's just part
089of the inconsistency that we have thank you thank you Mr lvo well first of all throughout the year we do reports to the committee ongoing we have another one tonight on mtss uh positive whether it be positive or not positive we on anytime there are events or any things going on in the school we we do presentations or we give you that information we're are not going to give you day-to-day incidents from discipline uh of what's going on in the school daytoday operation of the school is not something something that we're going to give you we can't start putting together day-to-day reports of what's going on in the school that's our job to operate and run the school you're in charge of policy and you're in charge of the budget you're not in charge of
090operating the school we're the uh we're in charge of operating the school and what happens dayto day that's our responsibility not the school committee's responsibility happy to give you any reports you want if you but it's I'm not going to come here at a school committee and start giving you incident reports so this student was you know uh uh smoking marijuana in the bathro we're not coming here and and give you a report such in that nature things are happening in the school day in and day out that we're not going to feed you and then there are situations that happened in school that are not for public uh record uh that I can't give you I am going to give you some information tonight that broad information about some situations that have been going
091on in the school which I'll always give you those things that I feel like are is important for you to understand but I won't give you names and I won't give you uh specific incidents I'll give you what I can give you legally but I'm not going to give you very specifics that are confidential information because you're not entitled to that information but we will give you the information that you're entitled to with regards to the success of the school uh I'll put our success up against any High School Success everything from mcast to Performance of our students we had more kids on call than any Technical High School in Massachusetts this year I think that's a measure of success we can give you all kinds of data you know positive data but you can
092also if you're looking for negative data you can find some negative data you can find negative data from anybody if that's what you want is negative data for whatever reason um we can find that you I mean you can look for that you can look at all the surveys in the world you're looking at surveys from teachers that may be happy unhappy uh teachers for some reason you know uh you know have their own acts to grind sometimes if if five teachers are unhappy and you see a survey with five bad things on it because they're not happy with a situation that doesn't mean that the school's not a positive place to be or that all teachers dislike the school uh that that's something you're going to measure success by if that's you know if
093that's what you're looking for you're not going to get that uh cuz the surveys are EX exactly what they are is a measure a lot of times and sometimes most surveys are very very positive you're going to find that it's most for the most part very positive but you're also going to find five 10 people out of 180 that are unhappy you can focus on those five or 10 or you can focus on the 170 that are happy it depends on what you're looking for and what you're trying to do with it I mean that's what I'm going to tell you I think glts is extremely successful has some of the most amazing things going on in any high school you know know we're taking students that are coming from very difficult communities and they're
094finding success they're happy our attendance rate is one of the best in the Commonwealth the success of the students is one of the best in the Commonwealth we take almost 70% of our kids are coming in below grade level in performance and we get them above grade level we get them passing the mcast we're very very successful in so many things I don't know it seems like everybody's interested in what's negative about glts what are we doing bad here what do well I don't know if that's the focus is that what we're looking for what's bad about glts or do we care about what's really going on what's benefiting the community and what's benefiting the school well not only do we benefit the school we benefit the communities in a huge way extremely huge way
095more than any high school that I know of in terms of the community as a whole in terms of its economic strength and development and so many good things so um I don't know why we're just so concerned about what's not good about glts but if that's what we're focused if that's what we care about that's fine that's all I'm hearing right now anyways seem like we're all worried about oh bad things are happening at glts well I find it somewhat disappointing that that's what the committee is concerned about but so be it disappointing or not this is what the school committee's for Mr ly they're asking their questions and they want their answers right they'll get the answers but they I'm talking about attitudes and I'm talking about people's perception of glts they can
096ask all the questions they want we'll give them all the information they want but they will not get details of the day-to-day operations of glts because they're not entitled to that they're entitled to what we're we can't give them details about what's going on in the discipline office every day they're not going to get that because that's not what they're entitled to let's first you cannot be more wrong when you say we no entitled you could canot be more wrong well then we disagree we are entitled because I don't know if you understand why our job here is the school Community is supposed to be approving everything that happens here so how can we not be entitled of the information that we are requesting if we if we are the one that's making decisions you
097don't operate you don't you're not entitled to operate the school we are not asking you to operate that we not asking you how you I mean the date of date how the school is being operated we asking you for reports of details of what's going on a summary of the um guidance Department how are they doing not only the good but everything it's simple as that and yes we are entitled and yes you know why we some of us get upset because look at the respon we're getting from you and you supposed to report to us you I'm happy to give you any reports you want you can have whatever overall report you want you can't you're not going to get day-to-day details of what's going on in the school I would be sitting in
098my office that's what you're asking for when you start talking about discipline and the things that are going in and the displine office there are a lot of things that you're not in chair would you respect we're not asking you to we we don't need to be arguing here back and forth that doesn't look right it doesn't feel right um but there's some things that you're saying that are out of place so with your with the with the shair please make sure let's stop the discussion and let's continue and we just need to get the report that we asking for thank you very much okay with all due respect Mr Lavoy um I know for a fact I'm here for all the right reasons I am not happy that you're perceiving this as being a
099negative situation no one is asking for anything specific we're all adults we know that that is not appropriate nor professional to deal with specifics but in my case the students that I've had here when I was here are the parents of this of the population in this school and if they're not the parents they're the younger siblings so not only do I hear things internally I hear things externally as well do I qualify everything I hear give us more credit than that as we are giving you the ultimate credit I couldn't commend you more for what you have done with the school no the the opportunities that you have brought to this community and to the students of the communities so that's not personally that's not my issue my issue is is when I hear
100negativity there's a reason for it somewhere along the line please look at us as professionals and know that we vet out and do not yes we listen but do we hear to all of that all of that negativity and qualify it I don't think so I personally don't so when we ask for something here or we make a comment or um we're concerned that the school can be even clearer in Your Vision you have a vision where the school is and you're you're pretty pretty close to where it should be but if you don't have behind you the staff vested in the same interest as you as the leader of this school I'm not sure how successful we can be in the future and that is personally my concern I'm not looking I'm not finger
101pointing I'm not I'm none of that I was here too long to know that it's just not a good practice it gets you nowhere loses your credibility so it's just not a good practice so I don't I don't like the I don't like your def defense of stuff because I personally am not questioning it I'm questioning what I'm hearing and when I was here did did people hear stuff yes but it was always like resolved you could you could ask somebody I I I can't deal with people getting defensive when you're simply asking a question I mean we all know that there are disgruntled people in every organization are those the people we spend our time with I hope we're spending our time with them to to rehabilitate them or ask them to go to
102for another career that's what I'm asking for I mean I don't think that we should be you know uh wasting our time having them teach our children they don't want to be here but there are so many good people here and so many good programs and you know that I think we should spend our time in in and and making it the very best in reality not in perception and we can talk about you know where the best school in the in the Commonwealth well you know what I spent a lot of time on the website and dec's website we are not the best our perception is that we are the best that's why we're all here and we want to invest our time in in actually making it the best do we have a
103ton of programs yes opportunities yes a great leader that that has provided that that Vision yes I'm looking for people under you to do the job that you do and bring the school as forward as it can and have the students be as successful as they can for everyone not just great alarm tech for the communities and that's it for me I need to ask Mr Mercedes to specify what motion we're writing down and I need to make sure that it's piggybacked on yours if not you'll have to make your own motions be hon we already motion yes we did but you're speaking on this one I want to know how exactly we be specific um I I am as I mentioned I think we just I just want to be I want us to
104be informed more informed about the the the concerns that we already kind of mentioned on on on on on the board here but I don't know how can I make more informed on major incd or um safety I'm looking for the words for you what words Mrs Ferris what are we looking for M collaborate because I I I would more information on dangerous situations or I'm sorry somebody's got to put it into words so we can put a motion to it I wouldn't again um discussion go ahead please Mr May the point of this is not to force you to give us reports on the day-to-day of the school district that's not our intention we don't want that we don't want individual students reports it's not I'm not a teacher I'm not a principal neither
105of us are principles simply we want data we want numbers we want to know what is going on in the district because as you said we are all here for a reason and we are here because we were elected as I said earlier we were elected by each of the different communities the four different communities that represent this community to hold you accountable and to make sure that the vision of the district moves forward and that the the uh glts continues to thrive and to succeed now I am going to piggyback what Miss Ferris has said we as committee members MERS receive comments um you know earto mouth in in and out of the District of things that are happening that are not coming to our attention and individually me I'm wasn't even Familiar of
106most of the things that I was being told whether it was Personnel whether it was a student whether it was a family situation out or inside of the school regardless of what it is we should be getting that information and you report to us and we hire search fire and evaluate the superintendent let's remember that and everyone below you your administrative team should be there to support your vision our vision the collective Vision that we have for the district which is why we hold you accountable to make sure that we could get the job done as of right now I don't see that happening as she said you go on des's website performance is declining that's the numbers that's the data this is not me making stories up so we're just going to keep it
107real here now when it comes to this Mo motion regarding major incidents I don't even think this should be a motion let's just make this you know real- Time Communication of what is going on in the district that we are able to know to to be aware of as I said we are not asking for the day today but if there is an incident that impacts the public image of the district or that affects our our students or our Administration the community as a whole we should be aware of that simple as that I don't want to be getting calls from papers news stations about stupidity because that's literally what it is please so that's that's all for my comments getting back to your motion well I that again the motion I want to put
108the motion for us to be more informed and again not necessarily specific we understand that you know there are things that cannot be told and so on serious incidents correct on the day today not not on the day to dat but at least so the we are aware of before we come into these meetings and we'll be able to make better votes on on those inci get something that serious sense this a serious let's TR let's take care of his motion let's I know but I just want to if there's serious incidents I mean that's it behooves the administration to inform us I don't you know I don't think I don't I don't know I mean as you said I don't want to be doing motions motions motions I mean this is like like you
109know governing 101 I mean you run a school and and you know I mean nobody's here trying to Lynch you and and it's like just trying to inform you maybe that maybe your perception is up here and reality is here and we just like it to be in the middle somewhere and I know that you have a responsibility to inform us if there's something critical that is your responsibility so if you you still want to make that motion go ahead but I don't know you know uh if you cannot word it just disregard and next time I'll just make sure I be more specific because again I I kind of wanted to piig it back on on the concern of Miss Ferris and and some of the stuff that we actually don't know again practically
110we're all talking about the same thing here so again we shouldn't have to come in and keep bringing up motion just to try to get the information so you can just disregard the motion you're going to pull yours back can you put it into words or can can you put it towards for a I don't want to I'd rather have a motion on this I got three committee men who are worried about this four committee men were worried about this you have two already I mean I think it's sufficient myself so we pulling back to motion unless the committee feels otherwise okay m d so what I believe what we need is not to have to come here and make a motion for us to be able to get information of anything that happened in
111the school and whether it's a successful information um accomplishment done by the students by any any body in the in in the school or if it's something that happened um an incident um I don't know the alarm I mean sometimes we do get some information we don't we don't get them enough so what we don't want to do is come here and make a motion in order to get those information we're supposed to be getting them without motion but I got that correct correct all right so we're using this for a discussion Mr Lavoy would you finish the discussion can we get information on a timely basis sure what I'll do is um I won't wait for me I won't wait for meetings I any in major incident that happens in the school oh uh
112we'll send out an email to all the district members that a certain situation happened in the school that I think is critical without mentioning names so that you're aware that of a situation that might be going on in the school I can do that on a so at the end of the week I can look at the end of the week or uh on a regular basis what are things that are happening that I think would interest the committee and put it out there good you got it Cheryl you got it you good you got it no motion I'm just no the notes well just looking for the notes there's no motion this is going to be a fairly long meeting I'd like to take a 10-minute recess but I think the coaches are here
113for the OU of State travel can I have a motion to move the out ofate travel up so that we can let the coaches go yeah motion to move this item out of order second any discussion um you want to call a vote or is this unanimous yes anybody opposed so it's easy okay coaches which one um it's the outer State travel we have a packet on it Mr ly would you uh want to read [Applause] that you want to use these so we're um there's been a change on a request you got a request uh for out of state traveling to uh for the young man that uh was here this evening to participate in the national uh track uh meet and originally it was in uh the the competition was going to be
114in Oregon but because of uh uh unable to uh get into that particular National event uh it's been changed to uh I believe South Carolina North Carolina North Carolina so what we're looking in which is actually less money so we're looking for the committee to approve uh elado uh Tony sarus and uh Brian dubie uh the coach to travel to the Nike oh this was originally Nike is now Adidas coach Mike would you uh travel to Adidas um in uh the 15th or the 14th of June so Mr Lavoy is correct there was a a change the original out ofate travel form that we have is in Eugene Oregon that was the Nike National um state meet um meet oh yeah what happened was when the young man qualified by the time we got the
115paperwork in no fault of anybody's um it was filled up so then we went to this three prestigious um competitions one's in Oregon one is in Pennsylvania and one is in um North Carolina so we are asking for um elardo with two coaches behind me to go to nor um North Carolina greensb North Carolina June 13th through the 16th um and compete over 3 days so so I think it's uh as you saw I think the young man uh that we're uh considering to allow to compete outside of Massachusetts has worked hard for the last three years uh and uh would deserve an opportunity to compete at the highest level if the committee is uh in favor of uh funding that uh that opportunity for him motion to approve thank you session in June the
116competition is soon uh it would be one it would be one instead of going to argon the young man would be going to North Carolina the same days um an equivalent meets June 13th was the travel till June 16th cor right I'm I'm sorry may I ask again do we have that document here for the sports yes that's what I'm asking two for the sports know that they have this one I think they have the old one is it elardo M melano no that's the newest slide up up there the newest can I see the name please may I may I see the name I don't see the name okay that's this one the one we have say 6,35 as a total that's the one so we approving something that we don't have that's what
117I'm saying right you put the new one well I think they probably don't have the new one we just got it today we just got this was it today it was yeah it literally happened late last night the change happened late last night um Miss L put the one that's up on the screen right now um is that the one that's on the screen that's the one that you should be looking at it's roughly 4,000 correct 66 okay it was on my papers here okay right here okay I got it thank you perfect you're welcome okay second it's that second already no I second that mhm questions any discussions M dla yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr tbox yes M Ferris yes Mr ha yes that all you that's all
118I got thank you so much really appreciate it thank you I want to thank the coaches for taking their time to leave their families and homes and take our students we appreciate everything you do thank you very much can I ask one question to them please can can you guys pleas coach Mike you still here I just would like to see more students that you know are being recognized to bring them here like the ones that came today today but also we we saw some um reports from the Trib I think that was I would like to see them here as well sure absolutely absolutely just bring more of them here um it I'm I think they like that besides winning and being the the Athletics and you know everything they do outside but I
119think they like the recognition when you bring them to this setting I agree absolutely and if the pents can come even better sounds good and by the way I just want to uh point out that we should have a section where pictures are taken because every time there's no place for pictures here and um it it we should have something said where the pictures are taken Con in the same in the same manner manner okay and and it's something that I have from before because every time they come here the pcture comes and the pictures are all over the place and nobody knows who's taking the pictures or not thank you you're welcome thank you thank you again ition second right you e so ADV my [Music] pay your still brand new okay just doesn't
120just have e spe last talk about how we for e e e ready this is the one they need to feel like do they know they have the Cofe they all have Cofe okay all right can we come back to Otter please uh we're at the reporter to superintendent director mtss overview uh Brenda multi-tiered system of supports or for strategies we Jos is here to uh give us an overview again of mtss he did give us some information a few uh what's it our last meeting that you two meetings ago on mtss it's going to be give us a little more spe specific information about what mtss means represents and how it uh Works in at gr laen technical school Josh please thank you very much for having me um over the course of the
121night uh we've heard great things and we're able to hear from students about their accomplishments um I'd like to congratulate them it's always great to hear the good things that are happening for our kids um to that end we also need to talk about how we're going to work um within our current fiscal commitments to work in conjunction with our current mtss framework to support them academically behaviorally and social emotionally um in the previous school committee meeting you all requested information on how we would be utilizing the three new positions um um in regard to mtss so that's the two reading interventionists as well as the math instructional coach so I'm here to give you a brief overview I know your agenda's busy um but a brief overview of what mtss is how these positions
122will work within it and what our goals are for the positions in terms of intended student outcomes so as part of today's presentation you should walk away being able to describe mtss and basic components of a successful multi-tiered system of support and explain how current fiscal commitments work in support of mtss here at glts um so those are two um smaller areas I am happy to do a larger workshop with the committee um at some point in the summer if you would have interest in learning more about the work that we have embarked on toward the end of this year and are looking to embark on over the next 3 to 5 years um so if that is something that the committee would um desire I'd be happy to run a workshop on that inclusive
123of the data that we're utilizing so on the screen you'll see a visual for mtss um this visual is from the mtss blueprint from the Department of Elementary and secondary education uh we are fortunate enough to be able to contract with um Dr Christen Rodriguez who does um who has worked with the Department in conjunction with researchers Educators across the state and across the country to develop the mtss framework and blueprint um for the state they are currently in the process of revising the blueprint um to include um additional levers or things that schools can utilize or pull in order to make moves for their in terms of their student achievement um so this visual right here will give you a brief overview um mtss is the multi-tiered system of support that schools Implement in
124order to support all students academically behaviorally and socially emotionally um it revolves around the tenants that you see that are moving AC um around the schoolhouse um so Universal Design for Learning looking at having tier one instruction universally designed so that barriers are proactively removed for our students within their tier one grade level instruction it also includes Equitable access um something that has been a focus of the superintendent over the past 5 years um as well as different drivers so there are competency drivers leadership drivers and implementation drivers and that's the framework for how you successfully Implement a multi-tiered system of support framework within your school you'll notice that in the visual there are tiers the tiers represent how we intervene for students how we remove the barriers that they have um in terms of
125accessing grade level content or curriculum and instruction um those tiers are fluid so if a student is within considered a tier two be um considered being within tier 2 we want to be careful we don't want to call them tier 2 students we want to call them students who are currently living within tier 2 or tier three those are fluid areas students can progress and move throughout the tiers um and it really just depends on where they're at within their different subjects um so tier one is the universal support that we provide so the tier one universal support is something like um the grade 10 Ela curriculum that's universally designed that is a tier one support we offer that to all students tier two are the small group supports and interventions that we provide to
126help remove barriers um and I'm going to give you a better visual of what the tiers Encompass and how the new positions are going to work within the tiers um so stay tuned for that in tier three are the Intensive supports that you put in place within your school community and it's not just academic it could be behavioral it could be social emotionally but tier three is that really targeted intensive support that's either individualized or in very very small groups of no more than five um and tier three is not synonymous with special education so I want to make sure that as a committee and as a group we understand that if a student is living within one of these tiers and they require intervention or support those are interventions and supports that they can
127receive as part of the general education curriculum so if a student is living within tier 3 within a specific subject that does not necessarily equate to the idea that they are a student with a disability um that's a common misconception that some people have about the mtss framework um so I think it's really important that we understand that as we move through this presentation the goal of mtss is to support all students not just our students with disabilities or a multilingual Learners so we have a goal here um um within the current positions that we've advocated for and that the committee has approved we've advocated for two reading Specialists and we've advocated for a math instructional math coach um our goal and you'll see the handshake above it um is to work in Partnership these
128tiers and the people who teach within them and the people who supervise within them and the people who coach within them and the students who learn within them are not exclusive of one another so we're looking to have this partnership between Tier 1 curriculum and instruction and tier 2 and three intervention and Specialists like reading Specialists that we've approved and support staff such as the instructional coaches all of those um things that I've just mentioned currently live within our academic mtss framework so when we're thinking about our tier one curriculum and instruction we're currently talking about our academic systems and structures that drive student learning forward um that's not to say that tier one curriculum couldn't also be in regards to Behavioral or social emotional there are areas that do provide tier one curriculum for
129things like Behavior instruction and social emotional learning um tier two and three as well can live within Behavioral or Behavioral or social emotional but I just wanted to point out that the goal of tonight's meeting is for us to understand how the three positions that we've put in place for next year are going to support academic success and CTE success for our students um I should have said as well at the beginning that when you see the academic tier that's inclusive of Career and Technical education so it doesn't just mean that they would receive support um or that the support would only benefit them in their academic areas like English math history or science um if we put reading support in place then the goal would be that it would support a student not just
130in their academic class but also in their CTE area because they're receiving that found those foundational skills and the instruction related to that to help them to help bring them up to grade level which would ultimately increase their achievement not only in academics but also in CTE so here's a better visual of um the tiers of intervention and support tier one tier two and tier three are what you saw in the visual tier two can be broken up into two categories 2 a and 2 b um so tier one how we're doing that that's all of our students right now that is um available to all students through a general education program and what we're currently working toward under tier one is high quality instructional materials we're very close to adopting in math and we're
131currently in the process for ELA um we will also be utilizing high quality instructional materials in our reading Intervention Program these materials are utilized by all students across their core Ela and math classes and they're used through core classroom teachers coaches Paras and co-teaching teams tier 2A is more targeted is your targeted intervention and support that's that first step and that's when you're working with small groups of students and there's instruction Andor high dosage tutoring using Core Curriculum materials such as intervention components that are aligned to the curriculum that's being us utilized in the classroom that tier 2A targeted support can happen during our Wind Block and that happens through tutors and classroom teachers um it's really important to understand that when a student is struggling and they are referred for intervention under tier 2A
132that it should be a Content teacher with content background and background in intervention tier 2B is the more targeted support um within tier 2 with small groups of students that is interventions provided by an interventionist to small groups using high quality intervention materials um that an example of that would be our reading um our reading intervention group that we're going to have next year that would happen during the win block or the enrichment block and that would happen through interventionists that have a strong content and intervention background so someone like a licensed reading specialist which are the two positions that we did ask you to approve last month tier three is your really intensive support and that's can be individual oneon-one or with your small groups of students small meaning no more than three or
133three to five and that's the Intensive intervention that's provided um by an interventionist using highquality intervention materials such as um a platform um like read 180 um would be used for reading intervention now again I want to make sure that we all understand that that does not mean that the student who is living within tier 3 at that point in time is a student with a disability um we can intervene for any student in our building um and that's what we're trying to do um so I know you know we do we we've looked at our data I presented it at um the meeting where I presented the SOA we've looked at our data in previous years we've looked at the plan for the student Opportunity Act and as you should be able to see
134the tiers of intervention are working in tandom with that student Opportunity Act plan to solve some of the discrepancies and the achievement for our students with disabilities in our multi-lingual Learners so I have a little bit of a more basic example um like I said to you before we do work with a consultant um and she has an immense amount of background and knowledge on this topic and um this is her visual not mine that's why you see her company below um and she likes to talk about tier one example as the checkup that you get when you go to the dentist right everyone gets the checkup and everyone gets the cleaning hopefully we won't talk about the systemic or the societal structures in place that prevent people from Dental Care um however the tier
135one example is that everyone gets the checkup and everyone gets a cleaning not everyone needs braces though right only some students need braces maybe they need a cavity filled that would be considered tier two tier three is when you have that root you need a root canal or you need a surgical procedure right that's a much smaller percentage of people than the percentage of people that are getting a checkup in a cleaning um so just to think about it it's the increasing of the intensity of the support that's provided because there's a much more intensified problem occurring so I put this visual together um and you'll notice it's green yellow uh red yellow and then green so red is the area of growth that we've identified yellow is the research based effort that we've committed
136to as a district and green is the intended outcome um you know we I heard you guys talk a lot um toward the beginning of the meeting about how we're moving our student data forward and what we're trying to do and I can I can tell you that this is a massive undertaking for our district and it does require a an immense amount of effort and teamwork and collaboration um so as you were presented with pre in a previous meeting an area of growth for us is that 30% of our students are in need of urgent Intervention when it comes to reading I want to clarify that we don't get the students and wave a wand and say poof you suddenly 30% of you need need urgent intervention we know that we have many different
137sending communities and many different schools with varying structures resources um and Improvement plans and our students do come to us like that so our students are coming to us with about 30% of them in need of urgent reading intervention that's not really within our control however what is in our control is what we do with that once we get them um and so one thing that was mentioned earlier um tonight was that our scores have declined the better statement to make about our data is that it has remained stagnant so rather than the decline not it really has not moved it is really kind of flatlined which isn't good either so we're we have a plan in place to focus on this through the implementation of reading interventionists and the implementation of highquality instructional materials
138within that class as as well as um seeking further opportunities to adopt and Implement high quality instructional materials within the ELA setting we have two research-based efforts that we're targeting in relation to that area of growth one is reading interventionist working with students within tier 2 and tier three groups the other is high quality instructional material selection and adoption um those two things are not exclusive of each other we will be selecting and adopting high quality instructional materials to utilize within the reading intervention um classes the intended outcome is that our students literacy outcomes will improve and reggies will be further prepared for career in college um no no one wants to see our kids succeed more than I more than any of us around this table or more than any teacher in this building
139or any administrator or support staff you know no one gets into education because they don't want to see students be successful um I you know I'm a graduate of this school I believe strongly in making things better for our students and because you did approve that those two positions of reading interventionist we are moving in the right direction to be able to provide the necessary support for our students so that they can be as successful as possible in their careers or in college should they choose to attend we're also looking at the math instructional Coach position in highquality instructional materials to support math skill development we've identified that the area of growth is at 28% of our students meet or exceed in math we want that number to go up we'd like to see 100%
140of our students meet or exceed in math again our students don't come to us without these gaps our students come to us not meeting or exceeding at this rate but it is our job to make sure that they meet or exceed at a rate high by the time they walk across the stage like they will this week we have two research-based efforts that we targeting one is highquality instructional material selection and adoption and the other is the hiring of the instructional math coach to work with Educators to implement and succeed in relation to the highquality instructional materials and supporting students acquisition of achieving grade level Mastery our intended outcome is that our students math outcomes will improve and our reggies will be further prepared for career in college um this is just highlighting how the
141new positions will work towards this goal these are not the only action items that are going to be happening over the next 3 to five years um by mid July we will have a 3 to fiveyear action plan for our multi-tiered system of support framework so that we can move forward with Goal owners and priorities for um student achievement within the next five years those are you repeat that sure so these are not the only priorities that we're targeting to increase our student achievement over the next 3 to 5 years we're currently in the process of developing a 3 to 5e action plan for multi-tiered systems of support to ensure that we have intervention across all three tiers across all three categories academically social emotionally and behaviorally and that action plan will be ready by
142mid July so that we're this July so that we're prepared to start um on the first day of school so that we can ensure that our students are provided with the necessary support to acquire the grade level curriculum and instruction that they deserve any questions yeah so in preparing the action plan what steps are you guys T taking in doing so are you guys taking input from other administrators teachers the community what is the scope of that sure so a majority of the scope is looking at data um so we like I said we do contract with a consultant who is an expert in this field um they're the one that has helped develop the framework for the state so there's really no better person to be coaching us and working with us on this
143um so part of our plan for creating the action plan is We Had A glts needs assessment conducted um in relation to our action plan and then our smaller mtss team composed of Administrators um support staff and administrators and support staff have met to review the needs assessment that was conducted by the outside source and do the needs assessment analysis so we've identified actions that have already taken place and actions that still need to take place over the next 3 to 5 years in addition to that we did a root cause analysis with our Ela data and our math data uh the math one is actually ongoing that's happening next week um and the root cause analysis included the four levers of mtss that are research based that um have been identified to help improve
144student achievement across the tiers um after that is conducted we're going going to meet as an entire team under my supervision to review the action plan for the next 3 to 5 years based on all of that data the second meeting that I just spoke to you about the two math and Ela data protocols that have happened and then um the team coming together to action plan and review our needs assessment for where we've been and where we need to go um after that is conduct so I should say um as well when we get to the piece about social emotional learning and behavior we will be um looking at further data points so that our work analyzing and collecting data isn't done however um we do need to make sure that we assign goal
145owners to that those different areas because one person can't be responsible for all of the different tiers um so we'll be looking to develop the behavior and the social emotional pieces um once we have the proper staff in place um to do that work cuz it really does need to be collaborative so that the people who are doing the work are part of the creation of the work so that they're then invested in the work um so after that is completed then we will create take our plan our five-year action plan and then another team will work with the five-year action plan which is inclusive of our priorities that are rooted in data to go and create um a revised School Improvement plan which to then create a revised professional development plan for next school
146year so that we have our student Opportunity Act plan our mtss action plan our school Improvement plan and um our professional development plan all in full alignment so that all of these things are working together for the good of getting to these goals thank you you're welcome so I know noticed that you mentioned about 30% and 28% of the students will come to to the school already come in with some kind of not very good reading or a lack of foundational lack of foundation so um these these numbers come from last year this year's school or last year or so that's an average um so that that number comes from last year's mcast data for math okay and on on the presentation that you're you're you know that you given us what are your expectations
147at the end of the the end of this next year some of these students will be based on on where we are now you expecting to grow 40% 50% or what what are your expectation so that's individualized and it's based on student to student I will tell you that in a comprehensive School setting where they intend or they have the intervention every single day you would expect one grade level's growth in one year's time um so we're not solving the problem by the time that they graduate necessarily but we are making it significantly better and removing significant barriers for them to access their curriculum and their day-to-day experience at glts now that doesn't mean that you can't have a student go from a sixth grade reading level to a 10th grade reading level um it's
148very individualized everyone learns at a very different rate and acquires content at a very very different rate um so it would be very hard to put an exact number on it however the action plan will be inclusive of smart goals that we can um provide progress updates on in relation to the data and so that we're monitoring progress monitoring the impact of what we're putting in place thank you you're welcome are teachers embracing this are they still in training they so a bulk of the work that we've done with mtss over the last three years is Universal Design for Learning um and that's what's been our Focus over the last three years we're now shifting that Focus because we have done that training um into um more of a focus on literacy um so I
149would say yes from My Lens they are um it's really a framework udl is a framework for how the brain learns um so it's research based um it's providing students with multiple means of Engagement so how they engage with the material multiple means of representation so how it's represented to them um and multiple means of action and expression how they demonstrate that they're able to do that um so it might be called something different but I'm sure you were probably doing similar things in your auto body shop um in addition to in addition to that um we have provided stakeholder feedback surveys to our students and our staff related to the professional learning aspect of mtss um the professional learning team that I currently oversee is working to um disaggregate the data as we speak
150and come up with an action plan for the format for our professional learning with our student and our staff voices in mind I notic on two one they don't have a wind time that so tier one is the tier one is your core content instruction so everyone goes to an English class everyone goes to math class everyone goes to science everyone goes to history so tier two a would be your Wind Block where you're receiving that targeted intervention and support however tier 2A could also happen in your classro if you ever pulled a group of three or four kids to the side of the room and you provided intervention in support related to the topic you were teaching based on real-time data you might not believe this but I just want to say I can
151sense the passion that Josh has for this program and other things that he does in the curriculum he knows he has the pulse of the students I think and their needs in um in the palm of his hand and I really appreciate his knowledge and the fact that he's really vested in trying to make improvements and bring these students as far ahead as they possibly can so I want you to know that I personally recognize that and you go keep going thank you you're right um anyway so in the um um the committee the committee you mentioned there's no teachers involved in that committee for the for these the PD planning team for the so team so we're in the initial phases of working on an implementation plan for next school year so when we
152do have a full mtss team it will follow Desi's guidance which does include special Educators multilingual teachers general education teachers um representation from each area so at the at the current moment we're still in our data analysis phase um people who have been part of the work that we're doing with Kristen toward the end of this year include our instructional coaches and they are part of the teachers unit um they work very closely with our teachers our instructional coaches um have expertise in relation to that um so yes the answer is yes and more yes and more yes and more because there's more to come this is we've just started the initial the initial data analysis phase so that we can get this off the ground for next school year um so when we do
153have the full action plan and it is um happening there will be teachers involved on that team um but the first step is the initial data analysis on the administrative and the instructional coach level I mean I'm just going by the question that the share asking how are they embracing the information so teachers teachers this information has not been shared yet this information is All Pro so they don't know well no they do know they know where our data so let me back up okay at the beginning of the school year we started the year with database goal setting and grounding our goal setting in data they got an overview of the entire picture of where we are at as a school community in terms of data so they do understand where we are in
154relation to literacy scores math scores and things like that they have also been heavily involved throughout the year in our initial implementation efforts when we were um working in our bar teams so teacher teams were meeting weekly to discuss student level data and concerns and how they could um make that better we've since no longer we since no longer have the grant for bar so we are going to be transitioning to a different kind of student support team um so their involvement is changing yes so did I understand that this the instructors will be floating they won't have a room the the uh the teachers that are going to help with the reading and the math oh no that's not accurate um our reading interventionists will have a classroom they have to have a dedicated
155classroom space in order to provide the intervention all well I you say that like would come in and work with three in a a regular classroom so that they will have a designated room to the Cs yes they will okay I just want to assure the committee that this is a schoolwide community effort um that every person that works here in the educational aspect of the school will be involved in this initiative it's a lengthy process uh setting the groundwork with the data is critical in being successful um but down to the uh instru daily instruction and the velopment of curriculum is all built around this initiative and uh I think we believe and I think as a school we pretty much believe that literacy is the Cornerstone of our success uh because it impacts
156every subject matter in the school if you have strong literacy skills your likelihood of succeeding in any curriculum uh will more likely be successful so particularly this year and probably for the next two years literacy is going to be a major part of our professional development this year moving forward based on the data that we have been collecting and the data will continue to collect throughout the Summer where we will be putting some teams together uh to do more of that work so uh it is a huge undertaking but I think years ago probably 14 years ago we spent four four years in a row just focused on literacy and we saw huge gains and I think we're finding that the students that are coming to us are coming with um literacy difficulties and we've
157seen it go backwards immensely uh in the last four years students are coming much uh their literacy skills are much lower than they were uh previously that we've seen a major drop in uh student literacy and uh I don't know if that's based on some of the uh things that have happened because of the pandemic but we are seeing more challenges in that area so we're going back to the back to the ground uh with some of the things that we found successful but with different approaches uh and focusing on the things we know will make a major impact on uh moving students uh in the right direction in terms of success but literacy is important everything from a VCA vocational programs to science to history every aspect of what they if they have strong
158literacy skills they're more likely to succeed so that's what we're believe that's what we believe and we'll be moving in that direction zoa can I also address um part of that comment as well um or the question I should say regarding teacher involvement um so one of the things that you've seen a lot of and heard a lot of in the last few months for me is high quality instructional materials and talking about selection and adoption um our math team has been heavily involved since last summer um our team of teachers in selecting and implementing and piloting a math curriculum and they're continuing to do so and their involvement is driving the process um their involvement under the leadership of Ryan Brown is actually um changing uh providing us a direction to change course for
159the curriculum um because the teachers have voiced that the current curriculum is just not working for them um and it's something that they' like to revisit so um I don't want you to think that our teachers are not part of the process process when it comes to their classroom level engagement and things that they would be implementing in terms of instructional materials um but the current process that we're at in terms of the work that I outlined for the action plan really is really does need to happen on the administrative level first um because it is all about objective analysis of data not about opinions um so that is why that happens that way thank you you're welcome may may I thank you for that explanation so an another question because I know this is
160this is like you said this is in development and it's for it's for the future so we we're going to be doing a program that looks up you know we want to see results a few years from now when when actually starts what about to now I mean this had been going on for a few years already right in order to collect the data and have everything ready to get started so what's happening to to the um support that the these students need now and just to be more specific we having a graduation in two days right two days we have okay um so the students that are graduating how are they doing are they all up to the level of graduating are some of how many of them are actually being um in a
161program that they need help in order to actually graduate even though they are graduating you know what I mean um so how are we doing today besides what we are going to be doing in the future do you have that information so that would be a very very detailed and lengthy answer I could provide you with a visual um if you want I could follow up with it within the next couple of days to to identify the supports that we've provided throughout the school year within the tiers of intervention um within how we currently where we're currently at in the process um I can give you a couple examples right now um we've provided students with additional math courses this year based on their data we've provided students with additional biology courses um we called
162it bioboost we had um a course that we offered that was a reading intervention pilot utilizing the highquality instructional materials that we will be likely selecting to adopt for next school year with our reading interventionists um we have our Wind Block where all students are able to receive the targeted intervention and support our students with disabilities meet with their um liaison every um win home base and during their wi blocks is outlined in their service delivery grid um to work on an individualized instructional plan um in order to support their learning and we also have behavioral and um social emotional groups that take place that our school social workers and our counselors have been running throughout the year um one for example um is called rise above which we utilize data to Target students who
163um have been caught using THC or marijuana within our school um and that's a support group that we've put in place to help um decrease the amount of students that were utilizing marijuana on a repeat basis um those are just some examples um but I can provide you with a more detailed visual um in within the next few days if you'd like that's fine I I might just ask me um superintendent because I'm more specific asking about the sen that are graduating okay so I I know I put you on the spot that's okay it's okay no that's okay um I can tell you that a bulk of my work is in Grade 9 and 10 right now um You you try to get the first two grades ready and then move your systems and
164structures up um so that will be a majority of our Focus however um we can certainly provide you with more information about our current seniors okay so so uh with regards to our 12th you're talking about our 12th graders leaving us now graduating so yes yes the one that are graduating I mean what I'm sure that some students that need support sport I mean it happens in most school and even though graduation is here they probably are at some level where they need you know either they they haven't complete their their classroom work or attendance or all those things to get them ready for graduation so I'm sure we have a group of those students and we have some support that we've been giving it to them yeah that's what I'm asking yeah so we
165um our student the 12th grades that students that are graduating now if you go back to when they took the mcast their performance was I would say similar to students we've had for a couple of years previous that over the last few years as Josh has said earlier our mcast scores have become flat for many of reasons we have done a lot of research to figure out what's going on with that we have a sense of what the issue is so those students are graduating uh consistent with I say with their peers across other high schools as well when we look when we compare ourselves to what's been going on with other high schools but on a positive note we've had 275 students uh on Co-op this year which is the most we've ever had
166and the least amount of students ever come back off a co-op because they're not doing well out on the job so they've been very successful in terms of the CTE side of the house they've been they've been doing very well um more than we would have expected uh and we've gotten a lot of very positive results in terms of their academic strength and skills I uh I would say that we probably have a few more students that are needing remediation uh that are actually going to be um working this summer or once graduation is done to finish up some of the work that they didn't pass we have I think about 12 or 14 maybe students that are are uh on the verge of uh still needing to continue their education because they didn't finish
167their work and didn't meet the standards expected in order to graduate but uh given that would I say that um there is prepared to go out in the world and succeed in terms of uh some of the challenges they've overcome are greater than a lot of other kids so what they've lost in some quality um instruct I mean quality uh growth in terms of academic skills they're overcoming with uh perseverance and other things that they've been able to overcome over these last three four years because of the situation they've been in either school here or uh other to say that uh students that want to go on to college they will need more remediation than typical kids that were going on than we've had in the past going on to college but the positive on
168that is I met with Lane Glenn a couple weeks ago and we were talking talking about the kind of remediation that students going on to northern northern essic they recognize and understand some of the challenge kids are having coming that they didn't have in the past so they do have more remediation programs that are credit uh worthy that they've never had before CU they they recognize it and understand that so um I think slowly we're coming out of this pandemic where we're finding new ways to meet the challenges that we've faltered in the past uh and getting better at it so so to answer your question I think yeah the 12th grade kind of got cheated a little bit the students in the 12th grade got cheated a little bit in terms of uh the
169opportunity to learn at the highest level we could give them but I think they're going to be okay uh in terms of what they've shown us on since they've been out in the workforce questions the students that have fallen shy of completing all the requirements and they'll be brought back are they walking or not it uh it depends on the contract they had to complete a contract and we looked at is it possible for them to complete the contract so we're uh if they've agreed to the contract and they've been and they've been working since the seniors got out then uh they're being allowed to walk others who cannot meet that standard will not be allowed to work but I'm not sure on the numbers no you know the I just I just wanted to
170know if there was something in place some will not be walking they will not be walking Cu uh because there's no way that they could meet the standard uh and and and for those kids who have had struggles there has been some accommodations for that in terms of kids who might have been out for mental illness or other issues we've been working closely with them to help them so if the students not walking it's pretty much we've given them every opportunity in uh and continue to give them opportunity uh to make a commitment to us that they will continue to work towards if they made that commitment to us we've been more than uh uh willing to give them the opportunity uh so it's one if a student has been willing to make a commitment
171and show us that they sincerely want to make that commitment then those are probably a few that are not walking but I don't think there's many of them so just to follow up on the same question by now you should know who's walking or not right yeah I don't because it's only two days away yeah I don't have the numbers you I know we have um two students that we know for sure who are not walking and they've been notified they they're definitely students who would need to attend summer school in addition to senior completion but there are some students who are um engaged in senior completion which is taking place even this week and they know what the expectations are um so we do hope for the most part most of those students know
172that as long as they're meeting the requirements of that contract as Mr leoy mentioned and we also came up with with a rubric this year to look at different categories so there may be some students who still have work to do um you know in one or two classes whatever it might be but they are showing up their attendance is good they're they're making progress towards that work and so um those students will be allowed to walk so it is a small number I I I I would guess maybe 10 to 12 students who are in senior completion um but for the most part students should know uh by tomorrow so I'm just going to because you you said more things so senior completion is that what is it yeah so that's um so that's
173a a program for seniors who once you know final grades are submitted we get the the grades and the the report cards they haven't met all of the requirements um so they continue to work so even after the um seniors sign out they're doing all of their their activities these students still come into school to complete work they have um a specific classroom that they're going to they have learning plans that are created by the teachers um there are also a small number of students who are still coming in for senior completion to make up days of attendance that they missed um we have students who are coming in on Saturdays to make up time okay uh yes yeah can we just have I just wanted to say if we could have this discussion during
174the graduation update um section we have because we have Mr allette here all night yeah thank you Mr as always thank you very much for all your time we know you have a young family at home and you belong at home we really appreciate all the time you've put into this to educate us you're welcome thank you and like I said if you want a more extensive Workshop over the summer I'm happy to provide that yes thank you you're welcome uh principal hiring update the superintendent's going to tell us about the uh where we are hiring a principal so now give you a uh handout that uh gives you a little information about the two finalists for the principal's position uh we went through a a uh process um where we had a committee interview
175we had committee made up of teachers administrators and support staff that did the initial interviewing they interviewed I believe five candidates seven C oh that's right we added to so we had seven candidates they brought it down um for 4 One Two 3 was it four Brenda Brenda was chairing the committee started seven two yeah you started with seven but you had a second in set of interviews so You' interviewed originally seven and now it's just down to these two we didn't do a second oh that's right so I thought you were okay so we're down to two candidates at this time um and I uh one of the candidates is Mr Chester Jackson from who is a northand over principal at this time is one of the two finalists and the this information will
176be going out to the public tomorrow uh all the information about two candidates we are doing a parent uh Zoom meeting for parents to meet them and ask questions which I believe is next Monday next Monday we can send you the uh link so you can uh listen listen to the uh candidates answer their questions and you'll get a sense of who they are and what they represent once that is completed uh I will do the final interview with the two finalists and make a selection and um and then we will negotiate a contract with uh the final candidate uh so once um that candidate is selected I will uh before it goes out to the public I'll let the school committee know so you you'll be the first ones to know uh before I
177even do it give it out to the staff I'll let the committee know questions on the princial yeah you have question yeah uh the zoom links can we get this email format after yeah please yeah thank sure just so we could share it if parents want to join yep absolutely anything else uh superintendent in school suspension all right so chrisa Gillis had a family commitment tonight uh but I'm going to update you a little bit on what's going on with in-house suspension so as Chris had when she made her uh presentation our challenge is meeting the regulations as put out by the committee she outlined um what some of those uh regulations are with regards to and I think you got some documentation on it there alternative suspensions so we are F trying to follow
178the department of Ed's uh regulations and have uh put into place programs such as mediation conflict resolution restoration Justice collaborative problem solving and then uh also the uh program where we have sent uh students to um pass a program uh for students who rather than do in-house suspension have gone and we've collected a lot of data so they're in the process now of collecting data from uh the work that they've done looking at um how many students have been in mediation in each one of these different program based strategies we use looking at what students were participating in these uh programs as well as students that went out to uh the uh outside program uh and um they will be uh putting a committee together this summer Christa and there'll be some administrators some teachers
179taking a look at the this uh success what's been successful what hasn't been successful collecting data from schools that do have in-house suspension uh and trying to make a decision on um what's the best approach in terms of In-House suspension something that we should bring bring back U do we feel like that's a better route uh we're also looking at the um program that we send students out to to see if if that's a program that we can uh simulate here at the school or simulate at uh in our district uh and rather than bring them that far out of District uh and and make a decision on on on that so uh there's continued work on this but uh we haven't spent enormous amount of time on it because of the end of the
180year and all the other things going on but we'll be spending more focused time uh this summer and trying to make a final decision and then presenting the data that we collect to the school committee to take a look at what we've uh unveiled in terms of the collection of data and and all of these strategies and and uh so looking at students that were in a mediation and seeing were they repeat offenders was there uh was it successful did it do what we had hoped it would do and uh for each one of the these strategies and then get give all that data back to the school committee so you can look at it to see um um how successful each of these things were yeah I I want to thank you uh Mr
181Lavoy for you know giving us that you know honest answer but I as as you go through this or whomever the ad ministrators or whomever goes through this I want to draw your attention again to I get that you're following the Mass general laws which I'm very um familiar with and the regulations which by the way have not changed since I've left they've been updated so back then it the the push and the drive was certainly to keep the kids in school so that has not changed at all what we're missing here are the alternative remedies may include but shall not be limited to so you know mediation conflict resolution restorative justice collaborative problem solving to me all student run perhaps we me we need adult leadership embedded in this because I'm not seeing the
182culture again that you know maybe you're seeing I'm not seeing it I'm not feeling it um I'm not in favor at all if you're not and if you have the right data to prove it for if you don't want to call it an in-house suspension call it the safe room I just don't want to see a student who has outwardly disrespected a teacher sit out of class and then be sent back to that same teacher or just be spok Spen to and sent back to that teacher I mean that has totally I mean compromises the Integrity not only of the teacher but of the classroom the school the whole the whole thing it just falls apart and if that's done more than once that's that's a shame so that's what I'm looking at you can
183call it whatever you want call it the cookie and milk Club I don't care but I do care care about separating a student with behavioral clearly behavioral issues and that's not a hit on the school either any school will have this it's just not it's the way we handle it however that can make the big difference and I like I said I mean what what hanging I had on all these but it's not limited to so you can have your own intervention and I just don't want to see behavioral issues turned around do the Turn Style go with the supposed to go be walked around by the security which is uh you know I don't know about that but walked around and then brought and sent back to class I I as a teacher that's
184a slap in the face so I I would agree with you a th% so I will make a commitment to you that I will look at the data for this year to see how many students were brought down for similar behaviors like you mentioned and what the what the consequence was of that behavior and if I feel like that that not so I would agree so it's not like a student is uh calling a teacher a name or swearing at a teacher or any of those kinds of behaviors and bringing to the discipline office then sending sent right back what what I agree that's a good process no maybe we do need a timeout room or something that they're going to stay till the end of the day or until we bring the parenter or
185come up with some other consequence maybe maybe not be inh house but maybe some other strategy so I will do some research to take a look at the data because we keep the data on all that and take a look at that and see if that in fact is what we're doing I would agree with you that we have to do something different because that I don't think is is going to meet the the uh it it may feel teachers are not being respected and that's the last thing we want we want teachers to feel respected that that we're not handling a situation seriously I agree 100% with you so I and I thank you I do I I thank you for that and I I you know the teachers look I'm all far and
186you know this I am all for teachers have to take care you're only as good as your discipline and your classroom management however you do that with you know knowing the needs of your kids and if you know you can't manage your classroom then I have a problem with that personally well interesting you say that because we had a meeting this week I was talking to Brenda and another administrator one of the things we talked about is profession part of our professional development do we need to do some work on classroom management particularly as new teachers come in so as we are as you know as educator all the years and particularly in the business you were doing your last uh few years that new teachers one of the most difficult things is to learn
187how to manage the classroom and are we doing the right thing when I ran a mentoring program for new teachers I spent my whole first week with the teachers strictly on classroom management because I knew how important it was and organization of of your curriculum and preparing for for a class so I agree 100% with you that classroom management is key to success cuz if you don't have classroom management the students aren't going to learn because they're not going to respect you and you're going to have a hard time getting so I agree 100% with you so that is something we're looking at and uh taking a look at the data so I am 100% committed to what you're talking about and I will we will keep you informed in the progress of the work
188we look at in that in this summer I personally will spend some time looking at that data okay thank you all right I'm scho choice schol calar we did revise the school calendar um I think which is much easier to read and we also I think you have a copy of a calendar that just has the uh other than the different colors that we did give the committee a special calendar for you to look at to make it easier to follow now we need a vote on this oh we did make a change I think there's a change in the calendar from the last one you received where we changed the advisory meeting we moved from November to October uh because we I felt it was too late in the uh beginning of the year
189because a lot of what they discuss and they talk about the budget November was we almost the the teachers have already established their budget so I thought it was important for the advisers to be part of that conversation so we moved it up earlier into October so that's the change that you see that you would have to revote the the calendar yeah um well thank you superintendent for this CU I was looking for this um it says color calendar for the district committee can this be the actual calendar that we post since it's already color coded yeah cuz I see this is specifically for the committee there's there's one that you see specifically for no we can make both available oh okay yeah yeah cuz this this would be more ideal as the school calendar
190that's posted and sent out color coded this way yeah we'll we'll uh go I think Brenda sorry so the one in the the packet that's not the school committee one that's the one that has the orange and black because that's I think really more helpful for families in terms of knowing if it's an orange week or a black week and whether they're students in shop or academics and I think that's kind of one of the major reasons for the two different types of color coding which is why I think it might be helpful to have both maybe we don't have to call it District committee calendar but you know events or something y thank you yeah so we can provide that second calendar to make it easier for people who are not concerned with what
191we their students in but follow what's going on events that are going on we what week is why and you know if I'm orange or blue black whatever the cas is that could be a whole separate calendar but this right here is color coded very efficiently and I with my eyes I could identify Labor Day is blue and Etc yeah yep get a motion to update the school calendar motion to approve as presented discussion Mr tbox yes Miss Ferris yes Miss dla Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr meres yes Mr hayam yes hand changes Mr so you got uh we just gave you uh the list of any uh uh change that uh was made in the in the uh School uh in the student handbook we would just need a a motion to
192approve the changes well how please how how will that impact um any kind of um consequences after your you know whatever is decided during the summer with discipline I'm asking this handbook particularly it looks oh what it's getting late for this old lady so it's way past so this is related to to um okay the different pages of the handbook including freshman exploratory the summer school cost the co-op being updated eligibility and Athletics so can you superintendent can you or the assistant superintendent just go very briefly on each of these the reasoning behind it yeah or just a little bit of specifics nothing too crazy yeah um see if I get the handbook I I asked uh thought I had a copy of the handbook sure so I can I can try Mr Mahia to
193take a stab at it I didn't prepare all of these changes um so um number 32 yeah so do not back into parking spaces I'm not sure the the big issue behind that but I'm sure um the the safe office and Mr vogle um would be able to speak to that I don't know if you can Mr Lavoy on that one about not backing into parking spaces 32 might have to get back to you on that one a bullet to some Behavior expectations table from not back spes if I could just respond to that so is it students recklessly in the parking spes or is it they're not parking properly or what is it so they're taing there was a discussion whether to not allow students to back into their parking spaces and uh table
194it was tabled I believe I honestly don't recall the the discussion about that so I don't want to speak to that it could be really fun to come up with some theories um but we can get back to you on that um just the career area uniform so I think they're just being more specific on that not on page 35 so most of the career areas they do have like either specific color um shirts it looks like culinary added bow tie so those were just I I think really fine-tuning um whatever was in the handbook related to specific programs um so career placement program updates um and freshman exploratory updates so that's 60 page 65 and 70 I know that um we made some significant changes to the exploratory process and the grading um I
195think it was not this past summer I think it was in 2022 um so there were changes in the grading categories and trying to make it a more Equitable grading policy so it's not you know we're just not just grading students giving them points for you know showing up and things like that it was supposed to be really more you know achievement and content related um so that is the reason for those changes just kind of reflecting the actual grading practices right now that we're not updated in the the handbook um summer school cost 72 um a fee may be charged in the past all students paid for summer school I believe it was maybe $200 per course we stopped doing that um I I honestly I think even the first year that I came
196here 2019 20120 but that was the covid year so that's when that stopped and we have not charged for summer school since then so I think they wanted to leave it in there be you know that potentially moving forward um we may need to charge and we would let uh families know throughout the year so there was a discussion about it this year but we did not um elect to charge students for summer school this year because it hasn't been the practice for the past uh four years or so so we would want to put that moving forward in um danger failure letters and make sure that families were aware of that in advance so that looks like just reserving the right to charge if we need to um update on Department transfers I again
197I don't have the handbook in front of me I I believe this this is that related to CTE transfers um no but I I was going back to the page 32 that was on the on the parking yeah because this this graph here this looks very familiar to me okay and uh so it's been around for a while and I I see that things have been added to it so I think what it's referring to is in the parking lot area I think he's saying add a bullet there yeah yeah and you know not to park not to back into parcking spaces right I just wasn't sure why um I think probably I don't know why but probably traffic or something uh I don't know maybe it's a it's an500 when they get out so
198I don't know oh that could be yeah see I said it could be fun coming up with a the BL the entrance or something I don't know there there you know uh let me see yeah so it looks like you know something sometimes we make changes to practices that just haven't been updated in the handbook um so I don't know exactly what the the specific change was for Co-Op and um Athletics eligibility so page 76 the concussion policy we do have a concussion committee that met um last school year and made significant changes to the concussion protocol we had our athletic trainer school nurse um nurse practitioner and U school physician from great Lawrence Family Health Center that were part of that and we made some um pretty significant changes to that concussion policy um
199page 78 guidance services so uh when I really went back and looked through the whole section on guidance Services um the changes were really significant just the the language was very very old um you know practices I mean even the vocabulary that you use in in talking about students with disabilities and you know Mental Health Services and that type of thing so I really went through and re wrote the whole section on guidance services so um it wasn't as easy as just showing a cross out and what was replaced um and really probably should have been done uh a few years ago um but once you really start going through it so um I did have um the original copy and um you know a side by side but it looks like that hasn't been
200provided but really it was just updating um uh let me see rather than go through this whole thing do you have any specific questions on any of these items um yes so page 82 the school based Health Center there's an updated paragraph I'm I'm good with everything else just specific to the school based Health Center yeah again that was just something the language was very old so I shared the um the student handbook with the school nurses and with the clinic and it was just really just up updating a description of the services that they provided just you know when you read it you could tell it was from many years ago um there haven't been any significant changes though um so it's not changes to policies it's just language right typically okay right all
201right thank you Services provided you know maybe the process for accessing services and that type of thing yeah that's all I have chair yeah no policy changes y thank you I ask you a question students still involved in this these changes or was this uh in the student handbook so um I know that it is presented at the school council for approval I'm not sure how many students are in attendance I don't think we had a very high attendance this year um but I know that we do run it by the school council before bringing it to the district committee all right thank you any other questions what if things had changed during the summer how's that going to be reflected in the yes I can if things are changed in the summer how is
202that going to be reflected in the handbook because I know these go to print right during the summer yeah during the summer not an issue for me I'm just bringing it up I'm I'm okay with what whatever I'm just bringing it up we changes no I just want to put the motion up we would bring it if we make changes table there's a motion motion to approve I'm sorry I didn't see yeah um it's not in the the changes but I had a freshman parent uh ask me about dress code uh I guess her daughter wore something that was not allowed on the dress code she wore a tank top and when she was when she was uh spoken to by one of the teachers uh I guess she had a little bit of an
203issue and end up leaving the school early but the the parents question was that how come some of the teachers are allowed to wear certain things that the students are not and she's not reflecting that a teacher was wearing a tank top but I did ask for the dress code and I noticed that female students are not allowed to wear skirts or dresses and teachers obviously can and I've also learned that it's not in the teachers contracts for what they can wear and they dress professionally I'm not questioning that but why are female students not allowed to wear a dress in school I guess that's my question and this was pertaining to like an 85 degree day and whatever and I said I would bring it up for conversation well probably not in a sharp
204area John will you address that question it was it was a very long list of what was inappropriate most of the stuff I expected but there was a few things that seemed like go either way with it um I guess my understanding was because I asked the question several times myself and uh because of the U many of them wear uh dresses too short and so because uh of that issue is my understanding of why we don't allow dresses for uh students is yours any different br I think this is a really controversial subject and I believe that the this District committee has had it on the agenda um for quite some times it's tabled it's taken off I think that there are um some discrepancies where you know staff you will see you know
205whether they're wearing sandals open toe sh shoes dresses skirts I mean it's it's been brought up um there are definitely you know for sure safety issues in shop and things like that that's the primary we want to you know also teach um good employability skills and having you know students know how to dress appropriately if they're going out into the workplace um but those things aside it's it's not easy people have different you know standards for what's okay and what's not and then there are also differences but depending on your career area you know if you're a student in business Tech and you're working in an office that would be appropriate attire so it's um I don't have an answer to it exactly I do know I believe I spoke with the parent um that
206you're referencing and I know as a parent you know she said that she would be interested in being part of a you know a committee or a group to to talk about it and to look at the the dress code okay so that should come up for further discussion as far as changes or after a parent group and students have a discussion yeah and I don't know if if it was finally removed from tabled matters or not I don't know that it was ever resolved I know there was a faculty dress code that was on the agenda okay yeah so I I think it would probably be up to the committee if they wanted to put together a group to look at dress code for staff and students so um we had a difficult time
207trying to get any agreement on the staff dress code so we did table it and uh we haven't brought it back um but it is something that's still uh going going to be looked at again uh once things settled down after we had when things were getting uh when we were having some challenges with the principal situation and some other situations we tabled it until we would have time to focus on that and uh we were also getting a lot of push back from the uh teachers on that the idea of having a dress code uh so rather than cause a lot of disruption in the building at the time when there was other things going on we said let's table it until the uh we can address it again for next year okay I
208only remember the open toad question that came up when I first came on and I thought it was an odd conversation to have but and I I guess if the staff is dressing professionally it doesn't have to come up at this point so I just wanted to add to we did have a conversation about this um at a meeting recently and um I believe it was one of our parent liaison was who was there who was sharing the the parent Viewpoint too so people do have very different opinions the the parent I think that you're talking about um you know felt that her daughter was dressed appropriately and it shouldn't have been um an issue we have um parents who are very happy that we have a dress code um you know just the regular
209shop shirts t-shirts and that type of thing like on both weeks academic and CTE so it's you know even among parents and students you won't find um total agreement but but I think it is it's something that keeps coming up so it's definitely worth the discussion a Mr Mercedes do we have a saying on on the Poss um I mean if I'm not if I didn't read wrong hear wrong did the student came up with the dress code uh some kind of um uh was it presented to to to a school to the student committee or something like that to to approve the dress code or how how do how does the dress code come up I mean I if I tell you the truth I mean I came to school and I my parents
210were my dad didn't work he was disabled and my mother was the only working parent which I think is pretty much a really good amount of the the of the of the families in in in in in the city that I represent I would love to see just just two uniform one for one for for shop week and one for for for school week because that would really eliminate all these nonsense and in in the school anybody who will Who will see the person with with the dress code of of the school whether it's white and blue and just they're going to school rather than this competition with whether you wear um you know uh this $200 sneakers or whatever kind of shoes so I I don't really know if if if any of you
211would if we even have a same but I would love to see uniform for for both weeks for a school week and and Shop week obviously the shop have their own you know each shop has their own color coded based on on the careers that they're doing and and this this other the other week will be very simple certain two colors the blue and white that's what I went to school with but anyway Beyond um but I just bring it up because I think it's something that a lot of parents in my community struggle because some kids having issues with the kind of sneakers they were because the ones who are the really nice sneakers or expensive sneakers to who knows how their parents are able to afford I I never pay anything beyond 70
212bucks for for sneakers but be all mean um if is it a possibility that it's something how how how did this thing get a a voted on on what kind of clothing the kids should be wearing because I I don't know um back when I started we had an issue uh we started a dress code because we were having gang colors and we wanted to stop all the gang colors uh we had an issue with um soft clothes in the shops grinding um welding flammability on the clothes we did a lot of addressing um we even address the fact that some families can afford to dress their kids very well and some can't it's gotten to the point where we did the dress code the way it is in order to make not everything perfect
213but to help out the the problems back when I was here we had students on the committee that were doing most of the Chang es what they thought was right and it was working out great that's why I asked Miss Richardson if if there were students involved in doing this and apparently we don't have enough students involved maybe the students should get more involved if they want to instigate the change I I I um I actually think it should be more of a parent decision if we should get involved on on the on the parents point of view because there again I'm I'm looking at again what I represent in Lawrence a lot of the parents are not necessarily both parents are involved and um and they're going to school nobody need to be dressing
214up like really you know you leave that for college you leave that for after school but if you have if you bring it up to me right here right now I will say two uniform uh one for for Academy week and one for shop week the shop week should be obviously uh quotequote to to the career and the other one we can avoid a lot of these nonsense um and and a lot of um some of these parents will be relieved from the burden of trying to buy cool clothes and the expensive clothing to be able to compete with their friends and I think that some of the stuff should be really voted here rather than than if you ask me as a kid I want to wear my my Jordans if I had them
215but can the rest of the kids in my class were the Jordans and now when I see them with pale shoes and now I'm mock them because they have the $20 shoes or you know whether it's uh Walmart shoes but if we can bring this problem that would be the end of it and I'm sure the students are not going to be they're not going to be happy but you know they didn't come here to to dress come here to get an education that should be the end of it that's my point but I wasn't sure how was this uh voted for the clothing it was something that was done in this in this tabl or was it brought up to the parents or the students again if you're a student you know you're going
216to want to work those really nice sneakers right but that was my point thanks okay can we get back to the hand can anybody I want to follow on on Mr Mercedes comment and I canot agree more um but on top of that we need to address the teachers dressing dress code because they are the teachers that are the sample of the student here at school this Administration and teachers so those things go hand in hand right and I can I see like the sample that that Mr Jones um from this the the pent that call you know how they a pent that a student is being um addressed because of her clothing but they are making an example of a teacher dressing probably the same or worse so we need to address that as
217well and yeah it has been in on agenda many times and it has been taken off so um I hope that we go back into the dressing code for students for teachers for administrator and make sure that we either get a committed together um with the right people and get a um dress code uh set um it doesn't make sense I've been here I come here to the school not not that that often but every time I come here I see situations with the the dressing either teachers administrator or students that are not appropriate at all 100% And I have said it since day one when I came here for a I don't know um welcoming thing teachers and you mentioned that teachers in flip flops it doesn't look right a teacher should not be
218in flick flat in school teaching kids um so we have a big problem and it has not been addressed and I know the time is difficult but it's things that we need to put in place and I understand that teachers we want to involve the teachers to see what's appropriate for them to wear but unfortunately we cannot leave it to them we need to tell them you need to wear this to come to school a dress Cod is a dress code and I mean if we are administrating the school we should be able to to come out with what the dress code that we want people to come into school with um so I I do agree with you 100% we need to do it sooner rather than later thank you back to the uh
219first code for students I have a motion to approve St handbook changes I'll make a motion to approve these changes second further discussion Mr Mercedes Mr toox Miss Farris yes Miss TLA yes Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia yes Mr haem yes moving on conference approval superintendent will update us on out State travel with superintendent and two teachers is it yes uh two two administrators I I don't know for the administrators or teachers yet we haven't all right I'll let you explain it so um I'm looking for approval for myself and two other staff members to go to next year's National Conference for CTE um I from my contract allows me to go to One National Conference a year haven't been to any since I've been in the road uh but uh I'd like to attend
220this particular conference that happens once a year um and bring two other uh staff members who are involved in CTE who have shown some initiative in working in CTE uh programs uh to this conference and um it's in December 3rd through the 7th in San Antonio Texas and the estimated cost is 8,855 for all expenses for all three members to attend okay can I get a motion motion to approve any question um so do you know who the two administrator that are coming with you I don't because I I have to uh uh reach out to see who's who's well first I'd like the CTE director to go the one thing uh I did ask her to go last year but she wasn't able to go so I'm trying to do it early this year
221so give people enough time to reach out but I will uh reach out to her again for sure and uh and another administ probably another administrator so I'm not taking teachers out of the classroom um this convention typically happens well happen once a year one followup question on that one so this is a CTE is a as for Career Technical location so it has to do with uh Career Tech programs so all the workshops and the uh the U conferences is basically focused on a Career Technical education and uh any changes that are happening across the country with regards to Vocational Technical education everything from uh approaches and careers that are H new careers and uh different corporations and companies for all these different just I just want to make sure that because usually we
222have the names I mean right now we have you but then you still have two people that you're going to add to this I mean I'm I'm okay with all this I just at this point it's not completed because it doesn't have the other two me that's what my point that's what I'm getting to um but again if you know what the people people are or at least specific what they are because you want to bring two people that you it's going to take advantage of what they go and learn and bring it here so if you just choose anybody that's not going to work you know what I mean sure absolutely okay that that's all I want thank yeah I mean this is a great opportunity for the superintendent and for the administrators to
223go um so I'll just change my motion just to reflect you know we just put the motion to approve it just pending um you notifying us who are the other two that will that will be uh traveling with you yeah uh so I put that as a formal motion can I have a second on that I want to make ask a question so once they um this Administration these people decide uh another side they go there would we be able to kind of hear the feedback on what was learned and how we can be able to implement some of these ideas into this okay great thanks report back not only for the committee but for staff members will'll bring back um what we learned from the conference and what it better how it will benefit
224the different programs in the school a lot of times you make connections with different corporations and companies that that may be developing new strategies or Technologies for let's say for construction and you can make that connection and bring back uh uh opportunities for them to either come and meet with our staff or we learn new uh like new Energy Technologies or things that are going on across the country research or or anything or whether it be industry based or educational based uh when you go to national office like this um I've been to three of them when I in my 50 years I've been to three different three times I've been I've been I've gone to them um all three times when it was at Char okay you okay with the amendment Mrs FIS oh
225absolutely second any other questions okay Mr Mahia yes Mr Mercedes yes Mr toox yes M Ferris yes Miss TLA Mr Jones yes Mr hayum yes so you have you just have a call report in your packet uh reflecting L app Now situation um and there's different grade levels that uh were that are showing how many from each program are outworking uh both seniors and um 11th graders okay pack questions I have no questions but the out of state travel for the students were already approved were they okay okay good sorry thank you uh any question on the call all right good job though no I'm just saying good job graduation update so I just attached a little information about our commencement speaker who's a graduate of his school some information on the uh commencement speaker
226that will be speaking at graduation on uh Thursday night hopefully it'll be Thursday night um and uh he's a graduate of the school and well recognized for uh what he's done in his in his lifetime in terms of uh his work and has a book out right now in fact uh that he uh had published but you see some of his uh recognitions on that second page um someone that we're proud of and we're excited to have him come and speak to the students about his experiences since he's left glts any questions on graduation I just have two questions how many students are graduating seniors [Music] 413 40 yeah somewhere between okay3 403 and so what is the time and the layout of the graduation how would it very briefly I don't need specific details
227you should have got in uh a uh yeah invitation but it starts at the graduation itself starts at 6: p.m. but everyone is invited to a reception at 5:00 p.m. here in the that we have every year all the committee members are invited to attend the uh reception where you'll meet the guest speaker and we'll have a little luncheon and everything before and then we'll go out about qu to 6 uh for the graduation from here okay and so do we have someone that will speak on behalf of the committee the chair or is it just you or the assistant superintendent yeah so this year um I will I I typically speak so this year be uh speaking the guest speaker and Val in solor are speaking okay thank you yeah yes so the Elks
228mathuin was the last community that had the vote and they voted to uh first they voted no and then last night they changed their vote and voted yes for the Elks so we now have all four of our communities that have agreed uh on the bond and uh us purchasing the Elks uh moving forward so the next uh step in that process is to try to help the Elks find a a new home a new new location and so we are start still looking we have a I have maybe one lead at this point that I'm going to to pursue and that's what National Grid uh so uh we're looking at a way to find that lot for them and once we can secure once they can secure a new lot or building there is
229a a great opportunity withth but they said they don't want to move to methan uh there's a building in methan that's available the Rond view which would be a perfect spot for them but uh I tried to convince them to grab that but they weren't interested in methan they want to stay in South Lawrence so we have one lead right now that could be a possibility so if we can get that done then we can sit down and do a final negotiations with them excuse me you one of I'm sorry I just want to hear that you said one of the district voted no first oh yeah who was M original city council voted no and then uh they came back this week and changed their vote um and voted to pass it so it's
230now approved by all four communities uh when did they vote no which meeting they voted uh two weeks two weeks ago they voted no and then they met again Monday uh and they last night and um they were uh uh due to one of the council members who was a graduate of the school a carpentry student student actually that I taught many many years ago he worked hard to get to the other two more votes for us and he was able to get two people to change their vote so a person that votes no has to bring it up at the next city council meeting which that person did and then there was all but one person voted yes for it so then it passed thank you come questions else all right website um are
231uh we still trying to finish all the doing the finishing touches to the website we had uh we had to take more pictures uh and uh that was done a couple weeks ago three weeks ago Brenda so we had a a company in taking all new pictures for the website and uh I think once those pictures are been reviewed and um by to and to ensure that all any pictures that were taken uh have parents' permission to utilize um then we will be able to complete the and hoping to uh bring it on board beginning of next school year in September the new the new uh website with a lot of upgrades and and more interaction I mean more I think it's more friendly um for both parents and for staff to utilize and access
232and it has been in the past it's easier to follow and uh I think you'll uh we'll present it to the committee in the beginning of the school year we have our first school committee hopefully it'll be done by then any questions on the website on the website would would they be able to have the Spanish uh option for somebody to be able to read and and and navigate through the website in Spanish yes there's an option that they can click on and be able to read in Spanish y y uh superintendent the uh grant for the auto collision so we we have an opportunity to uh obtain a capital skills Grant maximum of $2 million and we put it out to all the uh shop programs to see if there was a need for
233any uh equipment or um if you had a $2 million if you put in for a $2 million Grant 30% of it could be towards uh structural or um a lab construction of a lab um um Auto Body we had a conversation with Auto Body had uh and machine shop where the two three shops actually uh were looking for uh equipment so it was autoc collision and machine shop but autoc collision had we believe the biggest need U when you went into their shop was extremely crowded kids were really on top of each other so in order to we looked at a possibility of how we could get more space and the uh what we came up with is to uh take the two spray boots out of the shop which would then open up
234another 2,000 square ft in the shop and put a small Edition outside the shop and put the those two um pieces of the new spray boots outside uh the other Advantage was the existing spray booth was not the newest technology newer technology the technology we have now doesn't allow a lot of cars you can't repaint because of all the sensors on them and because of the way the space is heated versus the uh uh cars not being the target of the of the heat uh so um the new technology allows for um uh ultra light to um be part of the technology in terms of spraying the cars so not in steading instead of heating the space the car itself is um targeted as the focus of where the heat is and allows them to
235paint uh cars with that are electric and cars that are sensored so um we uh have put in a proposal for that we get that that allow us to purchase the two new spray booth that are worth about $600,000 and uh put on a an addition as well and then also upgrade six new machines in machine shop that are uh outdated and need to be upgraded uh so we're looking hoping to uh to hear on that uh within the next four weeks whether we got that Grant or not uh that'll be a great opportunity to upgrade that program so I did want to give you a heads up that that's something we put in for any questions deduc so uh the little reggies uh you should have on there two documents one with the existing
236cost that uh that we have uh this year and then the new 3% increase uh document that shows what the increas is uh for the uh upcoming school year so uh we would need a vote of the committee in order to increase the uh cost by 3% for next year for uh students attending uh the program questions I don't see you just throw something at me I'm sorry n I'm not that bad um yeah is this open to like the public or is this no only person only uh people who staff members only yeah okay okay that was it I question yeah why are we increasing it again I know you brought this before and I asked you for the um we increased we increased increasing the rates because of the increase in uh uh
237salary increases for the staff uh and we're um trying to uh make it more a little more coste effective albeit not a whole lot just to um get mean a staff for the for the daycare that's for dayare increase the staff for the daycare that's for the daycare yep for uh parents who have children that are our staff members who have children in the daycare I'm sorry but this is a shop and it's also a shop it's also a shop so are we don't we get grants to cover the shop so we we get fun for that shop yeah so the teachers themselves we get funded for the teachers themselves but then we also have eec teachers because the teachers alone can't cover all the the program and the kids so the teachers EC eec
238teachers are not covered by uh grants and they're not covered by uh chapter 74 funding so in order to pay those staff members uh we have to uh bring in Revenue motion motion to accept or new rights questions more disc miss tler Mr Jones yes Mr Mahia obain Mr Mercedes yes Mr toox yes M Faris yes Mr ha yes the driver's education Mr this is just information uh yes so on the driver's ed at one point we were working towards trying to operate our own driver Ed program um we were trying to um do some Partnerships with one of the driving schools uh after several months of working on this um and looking at the cost for us to continue to try to pursue this uh We've made a decision it's not cost effective for
239us in fact uh at what we have to pay our teachers it almost costs more would cost the students more um because moving forward this year we had a grant so would be C cost effective but moving forward without a grant that's guaranteed every year would not be cost effective so what we've uh decided to do is to go out for RFP and try to partner with the school that would offer um that would do offer a program here in our school but at a reduce rate for our students so we're putting out a RFP to try to uh get a program that's more cost effective and um uh but be partners with the school so that they would um operate here operate the classes here at glts questions yes is this related to the
240cards that we were trying to sell to the yeah so the cards we were trying to sell we will no longer sell uh to them well when we looked at that um it was possible and there were some challenges but the um the problem uh was not so much running that particular prog program but the ongoing uh cost after this year so it didn't make sense to sell them then buy them back if we weren't going to continue the program here at glts so uh that's why we abandoned that process or that attempt to uh operate program ourselves here at the school so we're no longer I'm sorry we're no longer continuing with the possibility of of of of the driers head for school so we we are the program we started we're completing that
241program so students have had the advantage and that program will end when this graduating group of students are in the program finish the program so they won't be impacted by that but moving forward next year we will be offering a we will be partnering or we would put an RFP to have a driving school operate here at glts the classes um so that they students can do it right here in the building after school and where when we put it out there as an RFP we will try to work with the school that's can give our students the best rates so U uh request for um um a uh proposal for for a proposal request for a proposal uh on on it thank you yeah questions person considerations School adjustment coun June 30th Mesa medical

248on yeah y so I want to make a motion to reorganize school committee meetings to twice a month the second and fourth Tuesday at 6:00 in the same location second during the school year so as we have now okay I think M second it first any discussion I do um I I do travel a lot for work um I guess I'm going to have to if this gets approved I'm going to have to be a lot of times to be on zo because when I you know when I when I did run for this get a yes or no choice yes well I'm then I can put a uh yes or no fine I'll put a yes or no and all right I think um I just want to sorry I want to amend the
249motion I said the second and fourth I meant the first and the third Tuesday don't hold us to the let's go every week I want to check the calendar so just two Tuesdays a month depending on the schedule that's put forward I I got to have the calendar yeah okay thank just two Tuesdays yeah thank you second yes okay go Mr toox no M Ferris yes M TLA yes Mr Jones no Mr Mahia yes Mr mes no Mr Hayden no um I will I will say this I'm going to leave this I'm G to have more discussion on this um we did this every once a month for a good reason um it was very time consuming God and uh a few of us couldn't make it but I'm not going to leave my mind
250Clos to it we're going to uh discuss this more put on the agenda at first meeting even discuss it during the summer oh sure and I can get together with every anybody uh for a quick hello or I'm sorry did you have your hand up yeah I did um I know don't kill me here I think the prior the prior vote not this one on the Merit raises Merit increase for nonre which did not pass and I'm a little yes I think it did pass it did did not pass it did not it did not pass and I'm I'm I'm look it pass one you don't pass the other but I mean you do one I don't Does this does not make sense to me doesn't make sense that we passed the the two they
251have the specialist and the other one and we did not pass those that's why we're here for discussion excuse me that is less than what we did pass doesn't make any sense to me even at midnight who that oh boy what did I sign up for can't change the vote okay then I'm going to make a motion that it's some Point next I don't know I'm going to make a motion that it's reconsidered now the motion I'm going to make a motion that we reconsider the vote no no now it doesn't I don't know in September canot do that okay no you can't can't do it tonight we have to I got to look up Robert TR I'm pretty sure you can't do it tonight you can do it for the next meeting okay for
252the next meeting then you don't do anything I'm shut off yes Robert's Rules well it's you guys didn't make sense to me I'm going to you something you you didn't make sense to me I'm going to tell you I made sense yes cuz you were consistent but everybody else was not exactly doesn't make any sense to me I voted for two people I voted for the people that I thought if I be doing somebody else's job I want to get paid so I'm thinking as a business owner I'm a business owner and that's always going to make my decision she's been working for somebody else's doing covering somebody's job if I be doing that job I want to get paid so I pay for that one I bought a yes and then for the second
253person that I bought a yes is for the special education person this person has something extra to her I've see the value on her not a special ed that wasn't a special ed that was a special TT T sorry okay but we do need a business manager that I believe that has value to the students and that's why I voted yes the only two people that I voted yes was for them too right and I I I can respect that you but I also think that we overlooked something else and that's why I will bring it up again when I'm allowed if I'm still on this board second thank you
