010the book what can we expect yeah yep so um so at the be so the beginning of the book and i think i shared a little bit of this in a video before the beginning of the book um i go into a little bit of my past of my childhood and uh some of the struggles that i had because a lot of you probably heard my my some of my story at least and you know i'm one of eight kids i'm number seven and i learned a lot from my my older siblings uh from all my siblings and um when i was 50 i so i i'm 56 now i'll be 57 in may uh at my 50th birthday i honored my siblings because they all stepped up when our family fell apart um and
011on my 50th birthday i went around and said you know mary uh this is what um the one character trait that i love about you and then i um yeah and then i kind of told a story about one of the things that she always did mary would always was always good about trying to keep our family together about you know writing uh letters and so that's what the first chapter is and then i kind of walk you through um yeah some different character traits that i learned from from my siblings and they're solid character traits that i would hope to to pass along to you so that's what the first part of the book is about and i i think i shared when i did my audio book um you know it this is
012some of this stuff is brings back some pretty tough memories and so i actually cried a couple times when i was reading my when i was doing the audio version because you know it's pretty personal um but i honestly think it's a pretty good book right i mean i uh we put a lot of time and effort into this and so that's why you know um i haven't done so many videos the past six months because i wanted to do this right you know we wanted to make sure that uh we yeah that i put in my effort my brother rick um who who i went and lived with um when when our family uh fell apart he helped me a ton him and his wife karen both you know they helped me when i
013was 14 and even helped me with this book too kind of rewriting things and making sure because i wanted to you know highlight quality traits without getting into the weeds on some other stuff you know when that you know uh really point out the some quality traits that i hope that uh would be powerful for you and then yeah and then in the second half uh we promised you 50 how-to's um and i actually ended up doing 58 to so there's a bonus section at the end because i i thought you know um in my life i think it's always important to uh under promise and over perform uh because if you know if you you set expectations for people and then they ah and then they get let down right so i think it's

017it's um so back to the first portion of the book i'm just i was like i don't have a good question um so you are going to read a portion of it but before we jump into that can i just share because i know i'm biased but i did get a chance to read and i think seeing my aunts and uncles like all because for me i look up to all of them they're all just incredible people and when i think of my family and i think of again my aunts and uncles i think of grit um people with grit but also with a lot of joy like it's not like i just feel like everyone embraces life so well and so dearly so when i was reading through the book i'm like getting teary
018so i was reading the book i could really see all of them really come through and come to life which was really it's really meaningful i think for me and i know i'm your daughter somebody but hey these are all your internet kids so maybe they're all biased too but it came out of the book feeling a little braver i think that was the thing i took away was even though i'm not necessarily in like a transition of life which i think if you're a college student and you need how-to's help but you also need like a pep talk it's excellent but because i when i read through it i got teary throughout it like picturing all my aunts uncles and picturing you and again it's such a gift as a reader to be able
019to have kind of someone rooting for you um i think even like as an author i guess that's my dad but from an author's standpoint there are definitely words in there that i'll cherish um so if you would like to read yeah or if you want to say anything yeah well i mean you're getting making me teary eyed now so uh um yeah i i i honestly hope that you know um you get a chance to read it because it's you know i think there's some pretty cool stuff and my siblings are pretty amazing you know and so i think also you know i i try to in my videos i try to make stuff that you can actually um remember and i think if you you know i think there's things that i've always
020thought that like if i can tie it to something and so if you think of my my sister mary you'll think of hey you know i need to i need to mail that card to that person that i'm thinking about um or if you think of my brother tim that you'll um you know it'll bring to mind what his chapter is about and so on and one thing um we were talking about my brother joe joe's always been one to you know not hesitate and go ahead and just do it you know he's kind of takes in the information and then he does it and i think there's times where you know we can have analysis by paralysis or paralysis by analysis or however that saying goes uh but it is true that you can
021you know sit there and overthink it and man just move okay you have all the information you need you need to move now you know and so i think uh anyway i think and so you can kind of tie it to my my siblings and then maybe remind yourself of what those quality traits are so i think um yeah i think it'll be good that way and then i like i said the how to so i think the how to there's a lot of nuggets i think you'll find in there i got i do a lot of finances and uh you know back in the day i didn't understand mutual funds and i'd hear a little bit about it and my friend conrad you know we all kind of learned things you know piecemeal and
022then so i was able to grab all this stuff and put it down for you how to invest in mutual funds and what that looks like you know back in the day i used to listen to this show on the radio and then he said oh you need to go to the library and you need to check out morningstar then i couldn't actually check it out you actually have to sit in the library and thumb through all this big binder to try to walk through it to try to figure it out and uh yeah and now i walk you through it's pretty easy now so you really don't have much of an excuse in order to help you uh yeah learn how to how to build wealth over time you know it's it's not a
023quick rich or get rich quick scheme it's a over time you know if you just make smart decisions over time and i do kind of challenge you too uh in the book i think there's some challenging stuff that you might go ah i can't do that well uh you know i would just challenge you to to push yourself to set aside a little bit set aside a little bit set aside a little bit and then pretty soon and it and it kind of snowballs because you're you see it grow and then it's like you want to you want to see it grow even more so anyway nice yeah cool um i saw some comments for if you want to pre-order the book because it comes out may 18th there's links in the description so you

028the time about um yeah like when somebody somebody made a comment oh that's a that's that's mom's job uh making biscuits or you know wrapping a present you know it should be your job it should be anybody yeah you learn how to do anything right i mean it's it's why are we and then you know changing the you tire to know how to change the tire everybody should know how to change the tire you know you don't want to rely on some so my husband or my boyfriend or whoever is going to take care of that you need to learn how to change the tire so you know you're not stuck on the side of the road you know how to do it so totally sorry cut you off no i just love the word

038that they were just telling me that yeah [Laughter] all right kathleen hannigan can you share with us your early life when where when born probably where or when were you born and where you grew up brothers sisters what was your family life like so anything you'd like to yeah so some of that you know i do cover that in the book um and i was actually born in new orleans uh in 1964. my dad my older siblings were born in kansas and then uh um then the work kind of dried up there again i shared that in my book um and then we went to new orleans and that's where i was born and we went there for the space program uh back in the day back in the 60s and then my dad ended
039up getting a job at boeing up here in the seattle area up in everett and so that's what brought us up here and we moved up here in 66 so um yeah and then i grew up in bellevue washington um and then yeah we're in the still in the seattle area now nice um i wanted to take one from the chat because i don't know this one less than handy who was slash is the most influential person in your life to you probably rick i was gonna say yeah my brother rick um yep and i talk about him in the book um you know so again i talk about each of my siblings my brother rick i probably there was uncle rick in the chat you seriously do make the best popcorn okay rick rick
040uh rick's still trying to keep that thing going i'm on to you rick i'm on to you uh but yeah rick's probably the most uh influential person in in my life i um yeah and he i just talking about the therapy thing that we were talking about um you know rick uh has helped me a ton with that even though he's not qualified at all there you go rick uh but he uh yeah he helped me through a lot of stuff and i i share that in the book i call it coughing up hairballs there's times like even in my 40s where um from some of my past um dealing with some stuff i you know we i would talk to rick on the phone for hours um sorry karen and annalee that's true though

042is um okay another question so adam whitley asked what was the actual moment you got notified about your youtube success or virality yeah so um [Music] you know it it's funny because early on we uh we had no idea this is gonna be what it is and i've shared you know i always stick with the number 30 or 40 because honestly that's what we thought it was going to be you know help 30 or 40 people and so we started in april and then we had um christine shared it with a group called the scrubbers and listen to the scrubbing and pockets scrubbing in podcasts and they're called the scrubbers and they were so encouraging and it was like what did we have then we had like a thousand subscribers i'm like it was wow
043a thousand people and they were so encouraging they were you know we were we've all been trying to promote kindness too but um they yeah they're so cut yeah the podcast is great the community they've built is fantastic great people you know um so i can't um give them enough of a shout out they're yeah just amazing people and then so in the middle of april after that happened word kind of got around locally um and i was on uh a tv station what was first chicago i think chicago reached out first yeah so somebody from chicago his name was javier i can't remember the channel though i'm sorry javier here the there you go yeah so he and he was so kind and he wanted they wanted to have me on and he was

052some of the podcasts but honestly i was curled up in a ball uh crying because my face and my wife can attest to this i you know um my face was everywhere and it was scary uh you know we didn't do this to become famous or you know i wasn't planning on switching careers i wasn't you know we my wife and i had a pretty good life we uh we planned well you know we were on a trajectory to retire um you know and then this thing happened and so it was scary it was absolutely scary so kind of got my feet underneath underneath me now yeah it's still yeah it's still pretty hard to believe i have to yeah no for sure i remember calling you like the morning because i open up my
053phone it's just million and growing and so i called you and i said dad where are you do you know what you said no he said i'm in my closet now um we're currently not doing youtube full time right now someone just asked that yeah so did you have to quit your day job to write a book on top of everything else i you know i haven't actually quit my day job i'm still doing that um yeah that's why you know i i don't know if i should apologize for not putting out as many videos because we just are trying to figure this thing out still you know um if anything thank you for your patience yeah that's navigating all this absolutely yeah thank you so much because we had no idea you know um
