0016 o'clock. We'll call the meeting to order. Should have the agenda in front of you. I'm not aware of any additions or changes. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. All those in favor 70 send agenda need to pull out of that or >> I don't see the sort. >> Did I not get his report in there? >> I thought I saw it too. Whatever it was. >> It's right after Lacy's in there on my >> mine says superintendent. Oh yeah, never mind. >> It's in there. I'm sorry. >> You find it? >> I thought I Does somebody else see it that I don't? >> No, I don't see it in there. >> I didn't want to know. >> You want me to go grab it real quick? >> I can share it with you again.
002>> Yeah, why don't you real quick and then I'll stick it in. >> I thought I thought I'd put it in my drive. I always wait for yours until the end because you make update it. >> Well, I left my teacher in >> I know. I know. And then so I I must have forgot. I swear I saved it but it must not approve. >> Sorry about that guys. >> Drag that or >> I kind of had a report to approve >> or do you want to just wait a couple of minutes and you'll have one to look at? >> You want me to email it directly to you also or I'll email it to Janet and let her do before she does. >> And I may just email it to everybody. That might be
003the quickest. >> Include me. >> I can do that. Yeah, I will do that. >> You want me to just read it to you? >> No, I can. >> I'd be fine with that. Me, too. >> And it'll be quicker than when >> Just read it. >> Go for it. >> Say it's on. >> Let's see here. Freshman class will be taking the pretend the 11th. Uh, Thursday, March 12th will be the eighth grade CTE introduction night. All eighth graders and their parents are invited to attend. During this event, students and parents will be able to hear about the various career and technical education pathways and courses that will be offered for the students during their high school years. They will also pre-enroll in their CTE introductory courses this evening. Highle dance team uh rockets
004are performing at halftime at state basketball game on March 13. Um FFA members are attending CCC Aggie days in Concordia on Thursday, March 26th. uh high school cheer dance tryyouts will be held on Saturday, March 28th at the high school. High school band will be attending a band clinic in Philipsburg on Wednesday, April 1st. Uh I will be attending the KSA school improvement day on Wednesday, April 8th in Salina and the lead center jazz to perform for band students on Friday, April 10th. and I'll put it out there so you guys can read it. >> I think dance is going to on Wednesday this line. >> Yes. >> Oh, that's right. It changed. Yeah. Sorry. >> No, Friday was what we had originally a week ago and so yeah for >> I'll move to approve
005the consent agenda. >> Second. >> All in favor 70. >> Thank you by the way. >> Okay. Board member reports. Um, so I I uh before the foundation boardmanship thing the other day we had um Jeff and I put legislative coffee. Um, Senator Bowers Moer was there. uh school funding and finance came up and uh we mentioned um two things really. Uh as I discussed the funding formula as the legislature we'll have to brought up a new funding form for next year. reiterated that um we want to ensure that as they figure waitings that us as rural schools we get what 27% of our budget from other uh folks outside of Juel County. Just keep in mind and want to keep it on their radar that they no matter where you live and what zip
006code you have as a student, you should get the same opportunities as whatever that looks like. whether that's in Sed County, Johnson County or in Rockills. Uh the same thing along with at risk waiting discussion. We're talking about that earlier. They were talking about uh um changing the way that figures and what did you share that was $900,000 of our budget is at risk waiting. We get about 960,000 in at risk. >> That's it. And so if they go play with that funding formula, that could have huge implications for us as a given large number of percentage at risk kids we have. So shared how that could be just detrimental and think of us of how they make that decision. Overall, I mean, I think they're both aware that they represent rural districts, but I
007think you can't reiterate those things enough. Um there's a lot of pressure to modify the way schools are funded. Um a lot of cell phone bill talk and a couple other things, but Jeff can answer on that. The other thing I attended um had a KSB board meeting this last Friday and Saturday. We toured um Perry and Lacton School District North Lawrence uh Friday afternoon. Great tour. um really cool early education center that they integrated into there that's from 18 months all the way to year five years old um that we visited uh and so and they're a 3A uh 700 kids school so they're about twice the size we are cover lots of different little small communities um and a great fine arts and program recently passed a bond they're there I wish I
008had met their superintendent uh prior to this he had done his doctorate on bonds and and how they work and operate and voter turnout and all those pieces. They said some great information on that. But uh overall it was cool to just see how other districts operate and function and KB meeting Saturday morning was around a lot uh just the KB services. I continue to even after sitting on there for three years the things that they offer in terms of training. I did not know there was a principal or a superintendent development program for staff and principles at any level uh that uh they offer and you don't have to commit. Uh but um it's the aspiring superintendent um uh program. Yeah, I don't know that we've ever had anybody go through that, but I
009just wasn't aware it existed. And so just a whole layer of I know the flu with it with the foundation of marksmanship I felt that was great but I continue to see a whole bunch of other uh training type things in that space I think are just good. One of them I heard of recently was around site councils. I think I shared that with Mark is something for us as we develop our new whatever the new soup scenario looks like. You know uh what bringing our site councils in and trying to discuss how do we make those better. I think one thing why I seen this last few months is how do we integrate our communities more into our schools and understanding what's going on and what we're doing and the positive impact we're having
010and site councils and community engagement can be a big piece of that. So, um um yeah, that's that was I just want to share that. So, I have to take any questions, but >> if anybody wants some cliff notes on how to contact legislators, let me know. >> They get tired of hearing from superintendents and fair or unfair, the message is heard a lot clearer from people that aren't in the superintendent chair. So, >> even if it's if you want an email crafted that you just want to put in and send to them, let me know. I can help you out with that, too. So, it's between the low enrollment waiting and the at risk waiting are two that would be devastating to us. Um, there hasn't been a whole lot of talk about the
011low enrollment waiting because if you get rid of that then you have to get rid of the high enrollment waiting and the big schools don't want that either. Um, but the at risk one is one that's it's very um concerning to see where that might go. >> Yeah, it was there's other pieces going on in school funding that's affecting us. What was I for DHA the the social services? MHIT grant. >> Sorry, our district you said not affected. I was curious about that, but I visited one district in Blue Valley. They're going to lose 32 positions that are funded through that in one district. That's essentials and therapists and things like that. So, there's some things going on. Luckily, I don't we're immune. We're not immune from that, but it was definitely on our radar.
012I mean, uh, I'm not sure what the end of legislature brings, but that that was part of our advocacy briefing. Uh, but it's a lot of what I would call electoral theatrics around education. Um, that will make for good campaign messaging in the fall. So, let's hope they get out of there and don't do too much damage by April. So, >> okay. Anyone else have anything? >> That report is out there now. You guys can look at it on your own. Sorry. >> All right, we'll move on to discussion items. A is employee recognition. >> Yeah, we going to have that staff recognition lunchon like we always have. That's scheduled for Wednesday the 20th of May. So, if you guys are able to attend that, that would be um fantastic. Obviously, a lot of you
013guys have commitments that you can't, but it's always great to, you know, we we put a little bit more effort into that day and not so much the district level um for the teacher appreciation. We we kind of handle a little bit more of that at the building level, but that's the one >> 20th. >> May 20th. Yeah. Um, so that's the day that from the district office standpoint that we try to celebrate them a little bit more from the board and um, so >> and best. Yeah. And best drivers everybody we don't do as much for them either. >> But that's May 20th. So >> the day after we last day of school. >> All right. Item B is senior class. >> Yep. We Ethan here representing the senior class. Welcome. >> So, my
014name is Ethan W. I'm the president of the class of Rockville High School and I'm here tonight representing on behalf of my classmates. So, over the past seven months, our class has raised approximately $6,800 and uh efforts to go on a trip in the summer. What we have planned is a 4-day trip to Branson, Missouri in the beginning of June. My reason for coming to you all tonight is to request the use of four school suburbans that we may use to travel to and from Branson from June 1st through June 4th. We are requesting only the use of the vehicles as we have fund raise enough money to cover the cost of the fuel associated. So just be the vehicles themselves and not the cost of gas. Ethan, what are those dates that you guys
015are? >> June 1st through June 4th. Thank you. Anyone have any questions? >> Been since we had a class take a senior trip. >> I can't answer that. >> 195 >> since I've been here. >> 1971 I believe. >> I can tell you a senior was. >> Thomas was a senior. >> I was going to say 1970. The last >> No, it was later than that, >> was it? Yeah, she was uh >> this this is the only class that has that since I've been around that has done all this their senior year. Usually they kind of cruise on out and you know their funds are depleted but they have done a lot of fundraisers to to earn that amount of money. If that money is not spent on this they can try to find
016another for otherwise it gets dispersed to the lower grades. to keep it. >> Some classes. >> I think I had like a $40 check. >> Oh, really? Yeah. >> We each got $100. >> It could have been Could have been four. I don't know. Well, would you rather divide the money up and take it or not? >> Um, I'm not not hearing any concerns against that. I think I think >> speak for everybody, but >> they talked to me quite a bit about it because they wor about the vehicles and Jeff and I talked the other day and we neither one had any insurance concerns. I mean, we take seniors after they graduate to the state track. So, it's not, you know, I I have no concerns whatsoever with our insurance uh liability. And I
017also had talked to Ethan about we could send them the credit card for the school for gas so they could save on the sales tax because they are still part of us as they go. And we did also talk about that they're going to need to have um paperwork filled out by their parents, giving permission to the sponsors to seek medical attention, have insurance because if they get hurt, it will not be on the school insurance. It will be the responsibility of their own personal insurance. And that goes for the sponsors as well. It will not be workers comp. They are not working. Everybody is responsible for any injuries that they have. But but we would have to have paperwork that is the one thing filled out and signed by parents permission. >> My only
018concern is to make sure we don't have something else during those dates where we need those suburbans for something. So >> we checked and there should be nothing else going on. So >> you need formal action on that. >> It would probably look good if we had formal action. I move to approve senior class use of four suburbans with their sponsors. >> Second. Those in favor 70. >> Thank you. >> That was the easiest thing you did today. >> That's how a work keeps a presentation short. >> Good job, buddy. >> Things I aspire to. >> Okay. >> A heads up this morning before school. >> You guys have a good Oh, by the way, don't forget to call me. You're going to get to see it at the campaign is amazing. >> As a
019pool and >> all right, we'll move on to item C, parents as teachers. >> Yeah, it's the the annual reports in the in the drive. Um, you know, it's not we don't get to see that, but you know, basically once a year, but you see how much um service that it actually provides. I do know that um if you see on there, I think it's mentioned there too that um Maybe it's not, but I I think we'll have a different PAT representative next year. But to me, it's a great >> last time we've taken an increase. >> I can't remember. I don't remember. >> And I and I talked with them and they said that they've been trying to just um swallow it as best they can. But now, and I'm I mean, when you
020look at it what it is for us, we're talking to what 450 bucks a year. But it really services a lot of our kids and helps prepare them for prek and and kindergarten, anything else. And so um I it would be I think it's minimal and I'd recommend agreeing to that price and if they have it over three years, but every year I mean we're investing $500. Are >> are you wanting us to are you recommending we approve their proposal with the increases over the next three years? Yes. I'll move to >> second. >> All those in favor? >> I also I appreciate them assuming data about what they're doing. >> Yeah, you hear about it, but to actually see the benefits of what it's providing is is good. >> Okay. Item D, elementary teacher
021assignments. >> Well, I'll kind of turn over to Miss Keller in a little bit, but you got five interviews scheduled. candidates uh interviewing him this week and spring. So I've got it mapped out if we hire two, if we hire three, if we hire four. I'm excited that we got some candidates who will apply some who um I'm really excited to have. So >> a nice mix of experienced, inexperienced probably. >> Yes, real nice. If you remember, right, she kind of gave her wish list a couple months ago on some of that as we talked. And there's times where no hire is better than a good hire. But there's also times where if it's someone that's going to be vested in the community for the long time, you know, we need to kind of find
022a position for somebody, you know, maybe that's an option, too. But I guess that's kind of up to you guys as a board. But um it's exciting to to have options. >> Yeah. A lot of times when you when you have the opportunity to hire good people, you take the opportunity because it might not come around the next time. So we'll see how those turn out. Hopefully you get some good ones. Anything else on that or you >> No, I just we were gonna wait and see where we're at with with applicants and >> Yeah. What seems to be working to get to create awareness? Were they finding out about our position? >> Um, a couple of them were word of mouth. A couple of them applied for the science job who have the K6
023elementary life and um two of them or no one of them by teaching the website. And one thing I guess just on hiring in in general is we kind of went to a Google form last year for application versus the paper one. Um, and I want to speak for Janet, but when people are turning in that one and it's the one that's linked on our website, we don't have to reach back out to ask for a lot of documents because most of it comes in that way when they when they apply through Kansas teaching jobs or educate Kansas website. You're you're limited to what you can upload. So, it's made me feel good that that online application that we have, people are submitting it and it makes it easier. >> We get everything. It's awesome.
024>> And it's it's a lot easier to apply online than it is to ask for us to mail you an application and mail it back. So, >> this is with a younger a teacher that is going through it for you elementary. And it was amazing. They talk about how the job fairs they're being a junior, but how many students by their junior year have already gotten offers and student teaching. >> So to identify those early um they do those career fairs and school districts are trying to get in earlier and earlier to get them >> on their radar and do job shadowing and all sorts of stuff. There's some larger districts that basically get them to sign a letter of intent and throw a salary at them and then they make it difficult to get
025out of they get their teeth in it a little bit quicker too. But um like with with the applicants that we have knowing that there's they have ties in the community is is >> powerful. So >> okay. >> Yeah. We'll see how those go. Hopefully have some good updates for next meeting. >> All right. uh IMA renewal. >> Yeah, it's it's about that time. We I had a preliminary meeting with them last week or the week before and it's getting about that time for uh the annual contract renewal. Um the fee um I'd asked them to keep it the same and and they're so that's what they're they're planning on. I haven't heard saw the contract back, but we paid them 25,000 a year for all their services. If you remember right, when we first
026got them, they for lack of better words were a heavy against with Blue Cross and were able to get those rates dropped quite a bit um the first two years between the two years. So we we're we've paid them $50,000 and they've saved us about 95,000 um in in quotes. So, um I guess in in in a weird roundabout way, we've got their services for free with what they've saved us. So, just want to get that on your on your um radar and we'll have that for next month. But if there's you have any questions or concerns with IMA or >> on top of just negotiating with Blue Cross Blue Shield, you know, refresh me on some other any other perks that are that come along with having their services. >> They help with compliance
027with all the reg and Jan speak more than that because it's more in her wheelhouse than mine. >> I really don't have much contact with them at all. So that one time they were looking at Jeff was working with them to try to look at switching American finality, but they never followed through with that and I wouldn't I would recommend that we don't look at try to making some change here at the last minute while with Jeff leaving. >> Well, no, I'm not suggesting that. I'm just suggesting in the grand scheme of things like having them on the payroll for any other issues that arise, just a recommendation that it still may be worth it. We understand it can pay for themselves. So that's just >> I really don't have much contact at all with
028them. >> Wait and see where our renewal stuff is because they've always been able to and Blue Cross said that's the best we've got and then they've had a conversation and all of a sudden Blue Cross had a different number. >> Right. I mean I I kind I'm willing to go with them another year and see what they come to do for us on the Blue Cross Blue Shield side. I just was curious if there's other perks that we >> Yeah, they have a, >> you know, >> they have other things, but we haven't explored them yet. Just like I said, trying to the ancillary stuff. Everybody that's made the switch has saved money for their employees, but we couldn't get around to getting everything ready to go last year and so we just said,
029"Nope, we're going to stick with." So, >> yeah, I suggesting we're looking to switch. Just probably good to have them in our corner for another another round. I completely I I agree with Kenny. I I mean what what's our health insurance bill per year? 700,000. It's about I mean it's about a thousand a month for employee if you have to do some some figuring >> is a huge substantial cost and I look at how we invest other dollars to be able to >> I should understand that and if I remember correctly they even kind of helped analyze uh some of that force blue has done that but >> I think it's I think it's the right investment as long as they keep showing their worth to us. So I don't have a >> but I
030think it's the right question. What else do they offer >> largest expense we have outside of salaries? >> Yeah. Well, I'll have it for next um for next meeting that contractor renewal but I wanted to get on your radar ahead of time. >> Okay. Um item Fond. Yeah, I actually just got it this morning from um our county cler the official um numbers. I uploaded that there. They had some provisionals that they added to it. Actually, you can see there was six and five of them were able to count, but um that's on there. And so um I'm very thankful for the taxpayers to to um I guess for lack of better words, volunteer to voluntarily pay more taxes to help us out with our HVAC situation at the high school. So, um it's great
031news. Um with that comes new challenges. Um if you look at, um I put the uh what's it called here? Workflow. Um and this is the WS city had sent me. This is kind of what they envisioned for their time frame for work. Um they're going to go out to bid right after spring break with a lot of equipment um and services and stuff and um they will have a going to ask for us by probably March 30th to um get us a quote to essentially open a PO to order equipment so it comes on time. Um Janet and I have a meeting with Hypers Sandler tomorrow at 11 that'll talk us through a little bit more about how all that financing and stuff works. But um the the cost that that for that equipment
032is going to be we'll have the collateral or the the amount in capital to cover that. But we're going to see how that works through lawn funding. So we'll have more answers on that tomorrow. Um, I asked Sid about they're going to need as much time as possible to work. Um, and so if you look at the darker colors, that's kind of the overlap a little bit. I've worked the Well, first of all, I asked him, would if we have snow days left over, would it do any good to give you a weak start? and he said not as much as the back end is going to be a little bit more important um for work. Um and so take that in and then if you look at I have instruction option is what it's
033called. Um trying to play around with a calendar to make it work with state statutes with student contact everything else. This is just one that I threw together. Um, and so I I want to take it to the teachers group too and let them look at a couple options. I he was asking about Labor Day and I said we can't. There's no way we can make that work. If we add 15 minutes to the day of each school day throughout the year, this calendar that I have put together, we would meet the requirements and then some for snow days like we've always had in the past. It keeps every other break the same. It keeps every other um holiday everything else the same. It would just be we wouldn't start till the 31st of August.
034So for the 2620, this counter is 15 minutes per day additional for 2627. >> Correct. That 15 minutes per day for the school year adds up to work days for teachers. there would be and so then you know there's a lot of layers to this but then you could you know have anou for the teachers for that year to say your teacher contract is 182 but based on that we're going to squeeze so it's this one >> how do we do with that without having negotiations on it >> would just be anou that we present for that one year that says your days will be different because of the added time and I could put that together before next month or by the end of the week I just I'm waiting to hear back from
035a couple districts that went that direction and I don't want to have to create something if it's already been created, make it work for us. But this is the one I felt like was the least intrusive. There's other ways that we could probably do it. Squeeze Thanksgiving break, squeeze spring break, and some of those others. But is adding 15 minutes the day as good for students as two weeks of school? No. But we're not, you know, shortening Thanksgiving break back to two. It's shortening spring break to two or three days. If you guys want me to look at other options, I can. I was just kind of putting together what I felt like was like the least intrusive to the rest of the calendar that was already presented. So, um, >> you start messing with
036spring breaks, Thanksgiving breaks, you're going to have people upset. >> Well, yeah. I mean, popular. >> It's kind of a choice that they we're forced to make. you know, I don't know how how you're going to get future feedback and that'll probably tell you more what you need to know than what we can tell you. >> Does when does that decision h I mean I'd be curious what we think is when that decision has to be made. I'm sure they want it. >> No later than the April board meeting. And I think for us communicating it to the community of what the county is going to be, I would say the same. >> We also negotiated in those three Fridays throughout the year where there's no school. >> We went over two. >> Yes, it
037would be that September 18th day and what's on that one is the August 7th or April 7th day. >> What about the end of February? >> The end of February. Yeah, >> if I remember, we settled on two because it gave and that one's wrong on April, but it gave them one Friday a month that was student free day. >> Yeah. Okay. I was just trying to think yeah what those where where any of that extra fat could be kind of >> me it's the it's the November the Thanksgiving you know there's two days there that >> and maybe one day at Christmas that could be >> if you're making come to school on Monday and Monday and Tuesday you could >> I don't see two weeks worth but I see three to five days
038maybe >> well and keep in mind that because the original the first day of school I want to say was a 12 if I remember Right. So, we're looking at two and a half weeks starting late. Each professional development inservice day counts as a half day of student contact. So, if you take a couple of those days and flip it to student contact, you're picking up a half day on the the eight the two teacher plan days. And then if you make any of those days on breaks, that's a full student contact day that you're gaining. Does that make sense? >> But it's also one year like this is this is a perfect >> I I don't see. Yes, we're we are running this we ran the bond. It's passed and we want to get
039the system in. We all going to have to make a little bit of sacrifice for it. we want to get this in and done as quick as we can without disrupting school. Maybe we ask people to have a little bit of grace and like, yes, we're going to have to eat into a couple days into Thanksgiving break for this year. We're going to have to eat a day for Christmas break or, you know, unfortunately, we're going to have to use those PD days as full contact date. I mean I it is for one year and we're giving up like a few extra days they're also getting a late late start to school year is also a trade-off in that too that I know their teacher work days is kind of how you have it structured
040you know that's >> yeah that's when it seems like every year at the beginning of the school year when I talk to people they thing I always hear just seems like you're starting earlier and earlier and earlier. I would think it would probably not be unpopular to start a little later for a year, but I may be wrong on that. I don't know. >> And communitywise, I think, yeah, you'll get a little bit of noise. I just feel like it's kind of more of a teacher. >> Yeah. >> What their thoughts are, what their preference is. >> Yeah. Maybe they have some other ideas, too. >> Is it your opinion that probably the 15 minutes a day is preferred because the rest of the calendar can kind of stay intact? That's what I assume and
041I'm making a huge assumption there, but I would assume that if we keep everything else intact, again, 15 minutes a day is not very intrusive. I say that I don't doesn't feel like it's very intrusive to the staff. >> Are we gaining a lot with the students? No. But for that one year, we're >> Yeah, it's a trade-off because it's I mean, I neither solution probably replaces two weeks of just getting in rhythm and >> Right. What are we going to do when we hear lots of four day four day weeks from teachers and negotiations? >> Heard it before. It's coming. >> It's always coming. There's a lot of >> there's a lot of layers of that before we can even imagine >> um >> that >> because what this amounts to is we have
042to meet the 1116 student contact hour >> and every year based on that 1116 because if you remember right before last year it was 172 days student contact was in the negotiated agreement then we're just going to make sure but So, and I'm going try to do the math in my head. The number of contact hours that we've had basically give gives us nine, give or take, nine or 10 days for inclement weather and different things like that. This one here takes off those extra days based on the 15 minutes for teachers. It still gives us about I want to say eight and a half or nine inclement weather days. So we have that padding, so to speak, like we have any other year. And so we're still going, if we don't have any snow
043days, we're still going eight days longer than the state requires. But I tried to This was just my first attempt at keeping as much the same as possible and just squeezing the fun. >> When's our first volleyball football games in this usually for volleyball? If I remember, right, I >> vacation practices start. I'm assuming this will have some >> kids will still come to practice on that schedule, I assume, whether we're in session or not. >> Oh, we might even have volleyball matches before the school year started. >> Um, >> is it I can check for you. >> Yeah. Is the gym done by then? >> So, the whole building is going to have to be off limits until they're done. But when when I talked with Sid, he said that first part of August,
044they'll know far enough in advance whether it's, hey, these two classes aren't going to be finished. You have to find a different place. They'll be able to give us plenty of heads up to make any alterations beyond that. >> I don't think first home volleyball match is for about a month. >> 26 27 first volleyball practice is August 17th. The earliest competition is August 28th for next year. >> So Jeeoff, I have a question. Are the teachers going to be allowed even to sneak into their rooms before the day they can walk in the door for their first inservice to get their rooms ready or is that going to be off the table for them as well? >> That's going to be a question I can't answer. It's going to be construction. >> So, >>
045because I can see that being a little bit difficult for some of them. >> So, it would be more for elementary >> on on choosing like the the blue days at the front of your calendar. Teachers would be kind of expected to work those days then. to meet that contract time. >> So, I guess this is and I'm just throwing stuff at a wall, but if you know on on your yellow days at Thanksgiving and Christmas and those couple other half day like if you flip those days to school days and however that worked out, would you remove blue so the teachers wouldn't have to report until maybe the 21st if you found two or four if you found four days somewhere else? I'm just >> I'm just talking about the options that they have
046because I'm not sure I have a real strong opinion either way. >> No. And that's what I'm want for you guys. You give me some other alternate >> options because I want to I want to provide the teachers group with this explore all options that say which ones do you guys prefer because we're going to have to make some sacrifices. Which one do you want to do? So, do you want me to look at one of squeezing down the brakes? The cost is the cost is what you can't see and that is kids being in the building longer. There's a reason you do the stretched out schedule. You start when you do, you end when you do because your learning capacity at some point shrinks past a certain point. So, we won't know what that
047looks like. What they're gonna that's I' I'd love to shrink that time frame by taking a few days out is my perspective. take three to five days out and get that time down to seven, eight minutes >> because you're not going to make up two weeks of school by adding a couple of minutes per period per day. That doesn't >> No, that doesn't equate >> but but I do think teachers need a perspective in this. It's probably the conversation. >> Absolutely. I just >> probably get the most input. >> There's a balance there. What kids need and what teachers need and I'm confident the teachers see that. Could they go back to one day parent teacher conference and then have school the next day rather than work all those hours? That would be two days.
048>> I think all those are things teachers will have input on. I think that's >> you're all talking about school culture. You got to ask the teacher. >> That's what I'm saying. We want this. We'll give up this. We don't want there's a gap. Everyone's got to go make it up >> because I'm like I'm like Kenny. I don't have a strong opinion. I'm I'm looking for their input and we're going to try to do what works best for the staff. I think they're going to be they're going to develop that. >> They're the ones and they probably have some extra 15 minutes. They probably have some ideas that we anyway. >> So, I mean, we're we our history's been we kind of defer to their preference on calendar and I guess I feel the
049same way about this to an extent because there's no >> there's no great answer. >> Have that conversation, tell them what we need and then let them >> Yeah. >> And this really only affects one building. So I I mean I'd keep that in mind in terms of scheduling out. I mean obviously you got bus routes to figure but really talk about just the high school that's affecting staff that's we're building the schedule around them >> right >> so they got some creative way that I was >> say what do we do with so is the elementary >> I'm just saying creative >> you're you're right but we there's not far enough stagger to run two bus routes instead of the buses just sitting >> I'm not I'm not saying that I'm >> well they'll
050come up something. >> I'll I'll again I just wanted you guys to hear that and get input from you guys. I'll put together as May as we need to. We've got two weeks from now on the 23rd as we're having our March DT meeting and so we can um gather more input from the DT members as well. But >> yeah, I just think the sooner we can get this figured out the better because we got to get information out to the general public too that next year's calendar is going to look >> Yeah, I think they're going to be mad we didn't tell them that before they voted. I think it was disclosed reasons amendment schedule. >> I think some of those questions were asked and answered maybe we didn't have it specifically in our
051>> part part of it is that is that it depended on the scope of the bond. So if like if both questions would have passed the timeline would have been different. I mean probably been a two-year project and but if it's not then they think they can do it in one. saves us a lot of money by not having >> I get what you're saying. >> Think people are gonna think we hit it. >> We hit a schedule. >> Yeah. Well, like the not the schedule, just the time change. Like that pushes everything back. >> Those questions came up in several meetings, but we didn't we knew it was possible. We didn't know what it would be, though. >> Okay. Well, just keep on your radar. And like I said, I'll I'll work as many
052as I mean, you know, you you add, like you said, you mentioned five minutes a day. You could probably do that. It's just it's it's playing with numbers is all it is really in a lot of ways. So, >> I say check, just check your teachers and see what they're >> Yep. I'll put together four or five options and kind of gather some input and then get it down to two or three from the DT and then send it back to the teacher to vote on and kind of go from there. >> Forest March, the end of this month. >> No. Yeah, I can have it. >> Always look over it then. >> Yep, that's a good idea. I'll have it to you. Yep. So, maybe by the 25th. >> Yeah. >> I'm curious on
053the workflow. What's our role in terms of the Um, you have project bidding and contracting. What What's our timeline for approval? I see it starts March 16th like what's to expect from the board in this? >> I'll just keep you guys updated as >> will we be approving bids at board meetings or will do you anticipate special meetings to do this? >> My understanding is that's the CM's responsibility that we don't have to approve any subcontracting jobs because we've hired them to do the job. I can find out to yeah let's >> I guess that's what my assumption was that that piece of it is on our plate >> to an extent >> but we went through some um role playing when I was going through the bold program and you sit down it's typically
054once a week they'll have the general your contract your CM your job superintendent school superintendent whoever the school person is going to be and you sit kind of you have your weekly updates on how things are going um from work for that week and what's coming up the next couple weeks and things like that too. So >> yeah, I'd be curious to know what that looks like. You your assumption is there there is no bids for us to approve at this point. The bond is the approval of all the bids. >> My understanding is that the C takes care of all that. >> Okay. But I'll find out. >> I mean, when I vision that process, you know, that's going to be a lot of meetings and a lot of getting into the weeds and
055splitting hairs on different bids, which if that's why we hired the CM in my mind. >> Well, if we had a lot of lot more local companies bidding, yeah, maybe we would would prefer to choose over XY local company, but do we have any I don't know. I don't know what we're I mean all we've approved is a bond resolution which allows us to go borrow money but I I mean we approved a CM to >> oversee the project. I'm just curious what our >> what that oversight looks like there is we just >> we don't touch anything until August 28th and then here's what you get. if you want to go up there every day and watch it work. >> I'm just I'm just asking like I I I see I see a spec
056quote of approval and delivery and I just don't know what that looks like from here on out and that's what I'm asking. >> Okay. Or is it literally come see us August 28th and it'll be done. >> You as the board might be a little bit different than whoever we have represent the district with all those meetings, you know, and it like we talked when we went through those interviews with the CMA officers. We want them to explore local local businesses when they can as well. So even if they have to split up some jobs from time to time. So >> I curious what to expect between now and August 28th. >> Okay. I will find out and I'll try to get some calendar options put together and sent out before before March 25th meeting
057if you want. >> Please and thank you. >> And that way you can have that when you're meeting with KSB on that one too. >> Okay. All right. Is that it? We'll move on to facilities. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's the biggest one is um speaking to facilities with that, the building's going to be off limits. So, I talked to Sam today and I got that um confirmation and so summer weights and everything's like that. It's going to look a little bit different and we'll work on some different options on what that's going to look like, whether we move the weights to the old gym or see if the city wants to allow us to use the armory, whatever. But, um we'll just have to provide things like that. Um we we got rid of
058all the asbestous and carpet stuff at the junior senior high in the last couple years with all that carpet replacement and now the elementary um Lacy's got a couple different quotes and those are in there too on the carpet the elementary because it's their turn to get their flooring updated. Um bids are relatively close together. The the Huffman is one that we've used in the past and um >> you want carpet in the lunchroom. You know that's a vinyl is what it is. The vinyl plank. >> Just checking. Good. >> Carpet will go in the hallways. >> I'm good with that. I'm just like oh my god. >> Doorways in a plank. No one >> and that's just like you want me to bring my dog too. Clean up all the spills. >> But between
059the two Huffman's done a lot of work for us and we've been very pleased with that. So minimal cost difference. I think um we know the work that we get from Huffman and been pretty pleased with it. So, you've done a good job in pass. >> Is that all the hallways? >> That's what I was going to say. Is this cover everything you you're wanting or needing down there? That is the main level except for the um hallway between like Mrs. Badger's room and Mrs. Kate's room. >> That's where I was heading with this question. >> Yeah, where we have the memorial. We are not going to cover that. Okay. >> And nothing downstairs at this time. Okay. No classrooms at this time to the public. >> There's a lot of kids that work out
060in the hallways. A little more comfort for them. I think Tandra, I think, is looks forward to the carpet option in the hallways, too. So, and it'll be the square tiles like it's at the junior senior high. So, if for some reason you do get a stain, you peel up one tile, put the other next. So, >> need a motion. >> Which one are we? Which bid? Huffman is what I'm looking at. It's 24. It's the cheaper. >> It's not. But is it? >> No, it's not. Huffman is the most. >> There's two bid. You got to add them together to get >> Oh, my bad. >> It's actually like a thousand or two more. >> I just did I did the math in my head. I don't know what exactly >> could Could something
061be said if we go with Huffman? I know Wall-to-Wall indicated they would >> flatten out the rises and the last time Huffman's did carpeting, they just went over them and left the hills. >> Street uh in Okay. >> Like soon as you come off 24 and eight, it's right on >> you. >> They've done work for us different capacities been fine. >> I don't I don't think you can go wrong on either one of those, but >> it makes no difference to me. Cheaper the cheaper route. >> I guess that's up to you. My recognition how funny he's done all the work in the past. want to keep those but doesn't matter to me or we can table anything about either one of them other than what they've done for us. I don't know either.
062>> I say us. I mean the school district I have personally. So >> I guess if you've got somebody that you've worked with that's done good work for you. >> They did all that tile in the junior junior high. >> That was a lot of square feet. >> Is around $1,800. >> They in Huffman. They did the the laminate in the art room. I'm trying to think where else we got laminate. >> Didn't they do all the rooms at the high school? >> Yeah. All the carpet in the high school. Guess it's whatever the board decides you want to do. But I I just like going with comfort. People have that work for you, done a good job. >> That's there's value in that. If you got somebody that you know you have worked for
063you and does good work, there you know you're not have to worry about it. So >> 5% higher. So all the difference you're looking at as far as the bids. If we if if with Hesman's have if we ever had issues or had to call them back and they've taken care of it. >> I are you aware of any at your building, Sam? >> I'm trying to think if we've ever had any issues that have arrived after >> I know that they >> I can speak. We've never had them do anything in this building. And the last when they were here, I had a bunch of loose tiles and they came and fixed them for me. They redid the stuff in the band room because the edge was wrong and they came back and redid
064that um before they said the job was finished. And that that's another one. They did all that work in the band room too that really changed that one. >> That's what I was going to ask. Who did they or did they did they do the work in band room? >> Yep. Yeah. From since I've been here, the only flooring company we've used is Huffman. So, >> I don't know who laid this up here in the first place, but they they came up and fixed it for me. So, and I don't think they charged me. >> Yeah, that's me. >> Yep. I'll second. >> I'll move to accept Huffman's bid. >> Second. >> All those in favor? 70. >> Okay. The other one update is the gym sound system. >> If it if if my timing
065couldn't have been worse, I don't know what. it. By the time I got it in the mail and sent it to all those partners, just reaching out to see if they'd like to help, it was like a week after most of them meet on their monthly meetings for their advertising, fundraising stuff. And so I haven't heard back yet. It probably be in a week or two. Um we've had we got um generous donation um from Farmway already um because they had had their meeting the week after, but I've talked to a couple others and they haven't had their meeting yet. So we'll wait and see on that. Um but I think um >> do do we have a a a plan in place for like selling the sponsorship or so or you know recognizing a
066donor obviously as an option with just a sign or whatever. But >> but yeah >> but but I also thought you know like surely this is an avenue at uh Osborne at the substate tournament. you've seen things going on at selling and advertising as a as a as an income stream for the the school. Like if if someone were to donate, you know, or or offering like two or three years of ads during home volleyball and basketball games or something like that. I'm just thinking along those lines to raise those funds would be just be thinking through those. >> Right. >> Yeah. I had that thought too that today that that probably ought to have some kind of structure for that too because if somebody comes in and says I'll give you $10,000. Somebody comes
067in and says I'll give you $100. What what what is the different tier there that we say okay for for that you we'll do this for that we'll do this. >> Yeah. >> And when I when I sent the letter out I just said if you're interested please contact me after the recuss discussion. So I haven't went any deeper into that. >> Right. Right. I just thought that would be a way to raise significant amount of money if you're going to get a little placard on the bottom of them or something that Midway Co-op, State Exchange Bank, et provided by. Yeah. But then there's also rolling advertisements for the next 25 years that can >> and I I would also suggest that you know you you gave us a list of who you'd reached out
068to but I encourage you to or all of us to think about some other I mean what what you send letters to like four or five >> five >> I mean what what what are some what would be some other possibilities? Summer Youth has a really good sponsor list. >> Talk to >> They do it and I actually probably still have it on my computer. People ask me for it every year. >> He has to say I think I have it on my computer right here to be honest with you. >> See what maybe see what other schools are doing or if they're selling their advertising on those things because we get 25 donors. You can't have on a video board like 25 little names across there and read them all if it's >> platinum
069level, gold level. >> Yeah. But I'm just saying, you know, like, hey, you we we'll give you a year of free advertisement on our video board and all home games and stuff like that that, you know, doesn't have to be a little plaque that this video board provided by, but they would get the benefit of basically free advertising for a year or two years or whatever the price level might be. That was just a thought I had. >> Obviously, these would all just be pledges. We're not actually taking donations on it yet because >> got one today. >> Oh, really? >> We got to check in the mail. That's a small one. Okay. Well, that probably ought to be because if for some reason that we don't end up going through with this, we're going
070to have to give that money back, I assume. So, >> because if I just use an example like, you know, let's say a state exchange bank were to donate x amount of dollars and we say, okay, you can have a year, you're going to get the 26 27 school year, we'll run three ads for every basketball game on the big board or whatever. is guarant guarant state bank sees that and goes well we need to buy an advertisement and put on there. So that's why I think you just kind of promote the advertisement that way pay for the video board itself. >> And since we got a donation I mean we probably need to we'll have to set up a gifts and grants account for them and then you guys approve each of those. So
071we could you know approve the one we got today or we could hold on to it for a month till the next meeting. And we were were we still talking about doing one on each side then reason size or >> looking at all options for the video side things that I want to say was not the cheapest most economical >> option. Osburns was on a TV. It wasn't even on the scoreboard. It was on a TV. Was it on both sides of the wall? >> It's a projector. >> Oh, a projector. Okay. It was just on the one side. >> Redcloud just used a big old TV on mounted on on one of the end walls so the whole gym can see it. >> Yeah. I just it just went just rolled all the businesses.
072>> I just think like for graduations and other things other events that you could utilize, not just sporting events. >> Yeah, 100%. Concerts, anything else? >> Veterans program. >> As much as that gym gets used for things other than athletic events. Heck, I'll put together an advertising opportunity structure pledges aside. I'm uh on facilities just because we now have a plan in place for the big piece of our capital improvement long range plan. Now what and what's our process? That's what I'm interested in for the other things. We have deferred other maintenance issues in buildings and have capital outlay outside of the bond to go do those things. um we're approaching the summer time to do some of those bids, especially looking at extended, you know, calendar and maybe some of this coincides with what
073work is already going to be doing. Um so I'm just curious what what what we think how we should start addressing some of those other long range uh projects that we've been putting off. I'm not talking about buses and suburbans and and things like that, but I'm talking other remodel options at the junior. I don't think you can leave buses and suburbans either. I think I think we do our seven-year >> long-term um plan like we had done before where you put it all together and say this is what we're going to do this year, this year, this year, this year. So, you know how to allocate that money. Um and you prioritize the order of when you're going to do this and that because you know, you're right. You got a gym floor at
074some point in time. We've got, you know, other >> That's what I say. There's other thing like >> we did the track recently, but the gym floor, >> the little theater, >> I don't know if you guys have been it recently, but we had the play this weekend. >> It's rough. >> We It is >> We have a lot of public events in there. >> It was the last thing on our last seven-year plan along with our room and band room. Yeah. and it got stopped when we transitioned superintendent and then we did go >> and we've been on pause until we knew how we were going to manage the HVAC system since 2019. >> It got missed. >> Then I know Mr. Duffy's expressed concern with how much our gym floor is used for
075things other than volleyball and basketball. And so I think I think it's weaker in weaker shape than we think it is. >> Oh no. If you go out there late, we're gonna have to push that back to Christmas again this year >> because we're going to need to let them know because Yeah. Unless that phase and can say that it's available. Um, and I would recommend that you I don't I've not worked with these, but you know, can you say let's start or can we prioritize the east side because we're going to have, you know, sports practices are going to need to, you know, school might start on this day and then >> think by July they'd be able to tell us what their phasing approach looks like and what parts of the building they'll
076be when and how and even especially by >> because if the girls have a game on September 1st and we can't get in the gym till August 30th, that's going to be a problem for Yeah. >> Well, and if we have to push that floor back to December, then all those games we added last year that going forward we might be adding >> we'll we won't be able to do any of those because that takes what >> I'll be able to get more answers, but the election was successful six days ago. I know. >> Yeah. Well, Brit's point is just let's not lose sight of other things that we need to do >> now that this monkey might be getting off. And then it also brings up the question of >> as they're doing this
077HVAC project and they're >> coming through the ceiling with or through the wallact is there >> like I'm I'm still a little unclear as to like how much of that is is ceiling going to be repaired replaced >> lighting I mean that's all been part of the conversation but you know that like Brendan said that's the time if if you're going to be tearing up a ceiling in a classroom that's the time to probably fix the ceiling in the But I don't >> I need a little more information on what what that what that looks like. So >> I know that Wes has been meeting with the structural and architectural and electrical engineers to try to begin putting together that scope and so I'll be able to follow up and kind of figure out what
078the plan full plan is. As of last week they hadn't gotten that far in the conversation. I got I mentioned the process like where's where did we just start putting that in the long range plan. Some of those some of those things are in there. Some of those things may need to be moved based on what we learned six days ago >> and what's our process to get to that point so we can either start a clock bids get that out and ready to go. This may be the time to do it. So thanks lots of other things we put off for a long time. >> Yeah. who who who forms that list and prioritizes it and I mean I know you know Sam you've been through that process before but I I wasn't part
079of that process and so I don't know who it was a collaborative effort >> I mean I would assume it would be administrators staff I would assume a board member or two should be part facilities directors all I mean >> there should be some kind of a group that >> creates that >> it doesn't need to just be the seven of us >> in the elementary I mean got the shaft on this whole deal. So, you know, and I know we took care of the Hback 10 years ago or 15 or however long it's been, but let's not just fall asleep on that building either. So, I'd be interested in your >> Yeah. And I've met with my BT um last month and started a list of things that >> great need attention. >> Great.
080Well, we just approved it project >> and we've done the same in our building, but we decided to before we started prior, we have the list compiled, but before we decided to try to prioritize in order with the HVAC coming, we're like, okay, nothing's going to happen this year. So really, we're looking at what what's it like >> again there there are a few things in we decided to prioritize what we could do in the uh woods and a shop this summer. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Because there's some improvements that can be done in there that are needed that uh we can >> aren't affected by the construction. I'm still like there's there's things happening as you look at a sound system though like is that the time to run the wiring and all the
081other things when we're replacing all the duct work and HVAC and in the gym like I those are all the questions that I' and Sam brought up the the woods and a shop and the letter of intent with the Patterson Family Foundation grant application I submitted was approved and so now I'm going through the much more extensive full application and it's due April 3rd. So, I'll get that submitted by the end of this month. But basically, I I wrote that grant looking to get new welding bays, new welders, mechanical tool boxes, things like that just to provide our our students with industry standard equipment. Um, and so they'll submit that and we should find that out. I think the determination is June. So that's another it's not really expense, but it's another upgrade that hopefully
082we were able to get some support on that too. So So you guys are you're already developing you said you you're developing input from your staff on upgrades. So culminating that the next 30 to 60 days and >> making sure we don't miss out on something to do this summer. Yes. That'd be the main thing. That's exactly right. Don't get to August and go, "Oh, we should have done >> we should have done this." >> Just remember, >> we have a shot clock next next year. Correct. >> Yeah. But that's that's wiring. As long as if we're doing wiring in there, that wiring needs to be put in place. >> There there's a lot of layers because you're right. Try to get as much accomplished with people here that we can. At the same time,
083whether we're looking at jump start or teacher PD days or anything else, the only functional building is going to be the elementary this summer, too. >> Sure. Absolutely. that we can't if they won't even let us into the building to do anything else then. >> Yeah. >> So, >> we'll just I'll collect and gather a lot of the stat for for next time we're together. But >> do I get the summer office? I just thought of that. >> No, >> we got a desk back here. >> You got an extra office down here. >> Okay. Well, I'll get >> I'll walk you, man. I'll get updates on that. Get it back to you guys as soon as I can once I'm out. So, >> thank you. >> Okay, we will move on then to action
084items. A is a KASB legal assistance fund contract and KSB annual membership renewal. There's a form in there. >> The I think the one that's on there is there's a typo. Correct. >> It is $3,100, not $31,000. >> Oh, is that Did you put that bill out there? No. >> Or did I? >> I didn't. >> But either way, they sent a corrected one. It's $3,100. >> Does anybody have any concerns with that? I mean, that's pretty standard. And we >> said, we just need to utilize it more probably utilize the services that we give to that money, but have them on retainer, so to speak. >> And they do they problem has been like districts value their legal work because that's you know when you need it that there's not many other places to
085go without buying hiring on private counsel which some districts do we're thankful we don't have to but it's the advocacy services they provide ina the communication services when we have a crisis that's who Jeff calls and says help us manage this and how we tell this story like there are other yes there's other pieces we use extensively so >> I I move we approve I second to refund Hold on just a second. >> Yeah, wait a sec. I'll I'll share something with you here in a second. >> Last year they refunded that to us because we haven't used it in several years, okay, >> with our classes. And so it's cheaper for us to pay for our classes as we take them than to waste this much money. So we need to approve it without
086the season pass. And then that shows the 3100. >> So the legal assistance fund contract is $3,100. The membership contract is $7,399.38. And what Janet was just explaining to me is that in the past few years, we have bought the season pass, which is an additional $1,750, which allowed us >> to take classes without paying for them individually and all that, but um we weren't utilizing $1,750 worth of those services. So, it would actually be cheaper just to buy them all a cart as we go. So, >> and they actually did an audit in house last year and determined that they they just sent us our money back and said, "Pay for it as you go. It's going to save you a lot of money." >> So, we would be looking at the $3,100 for
087the legal assistance fund and $73.99 38 for the membership renewal. >> My motion to accept the legal assistance as well as the membership without the plus. >> Second. All those in favor 70. >> Thanks guys. >> Okay. Uh there is no B so we'll go to C. >> Yeah. >> I hope >> um we're just going to table um C until um later because they don't want to have the parent meeting until >> April 22nd. Usually Terry always did it right away, but with the new driver instructor, he wanted to do it April 22nd for whatever reason. So, um, still gives us plenty of time before the, uh, start of class to get a contract ready and approved at the May board, >> but that way we'll know the exact number of students and so
088we'll know exactly so that we don't change. >> All right, we will table that till next month. >> Okay, so that's why that's tabled. >> All right. Uh D is a account for Grizzly store woods. >> Yeah. So I I'm sure you guys I put it on Facebook and different things that the the um and Mr. O the >> shop >> laser engraver. >> Yeah.
