Thank you. Roll call. >> On the role, Mr. Delg Greco >> here. >> Mrs. Downey >> here. >> Mrs. Genchi >> here. >> Mrs. Moran >> here. >> Mrs. Norian >> here. >> Mr. Nutland >> here. >> Mrs. Walker is not here. Mr. Dariion >> here. >> Mrs. Nichols. >> Here. Um, I believe I had a request from someone to go into a closed session. If somebody wants to make a motion for that. >> So moved. >> No, I need the You're making the motion. >> I'm making the motion. I'll second. >> Second by Mr. Delg Greco. Roll call >> on the roll. Mr. Delg Greco. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Downey. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Geni? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Moran? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Norian? >> Yes. >> Mr. Nutland? >> Yes. >> Mr.

Dariion? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Nichols? >> Yes. >> We will be back. >> [music] >> Mr. Darian, would you make a motion? >> Yeah, I make a motion we come out of executive session. >> Second by Mrs. Norian. >> All in favor? >> I I >> All right, we'll keep going. Um I just have here um a thank you note from uh Ms. Bendette regarding um her retirement gift. I'll just send it around to everyone and I guess we will move to Mr. Ayapelli. Good evening. I am going to read Miss Boosezius's report. Good evening. As the summer winds down, you will find several annual approvals on tonight's agenda. For example, tonight you will approve the district emergency plan. As you re as you may remember, we spent time in May and June preparing for

changes in our evacuation protocols, and this plan now reflects those revisions. Additionally, you will be asked to approve the district professional development plan. This plan is closely aligned to the goals you set at the board retreat. And when the school year begins, each of our staff members will create their individual professional development plan in alignment with the district plan. You will also approve the code of conduct for the 2627 school year. This revised version includes language regarding the newly implemented no internet enabled devices from Belltobell law which you and the community received a letter regarding earlier this month. Finally, under administrative items, you will approve a revised calendar which changes the half day in November to accommodate the replacement of an HVAC unit over the teachers convention break. Under personnel, you will be asked to

both approve a resignation and a hiring. We thank Mr. Warner for his contributions to the district and wish him well as he takes the helm as an elementary school principal. I am also recommending Miss Laura Kandre as our new upper grade assistant principal. Miss Kandre brings a background in communications, 10 years of classroom teaching experience and additional experience writing curriculum and coaching teachers in technology integration. There are not a lot of elementary school um excuse me, there are not a lot of elementary schools with assistant principal positions, which makes this a coveted position that requires a rigorous hiring process. Approximately 120 individuals applied for the position. 20 individuals were given the opportunity to complete a screening task that included multimedia and writing samples. Six individuals were then given the opportunity to interview with a panel.

At the end of that interview, individuals were asked to watch a video lesson and create an observation report. Two individuals were then chosen to proceed to the final round. These two were asked to do an additional reflective writing task prior to that final round. Looking across the candidates backgrounds, the interviews, tasks, and reference checks, it became clear that Ms. Kandra is the right person to join our administrative team and move teaching and learning forward at Oidell Public School. And that concludes Miss Mosas's report and I'm hoping I pronounced your name correctly. I have a report uh similar to that we were talking in prior at the building and grounds meeting. Uh the cleaning of the building is now at a break neck pace because it's the final dash to get everything done. Uh we've had

the basketball court uh started project was started today removing of the posts and putting up new backboards. They have been working the past week or week or so on the kindergarten area playground. uh sanding it, removing the rust, putting new rubber coating, and that will be in new mulch will be coming in on Friday, and we'll have our safety insurance inspection prior to school starting, which is already scheduled. Um the camera project will be starting during the school year. Uh they have a delay in gathering the materials. They say it's a 3 to four week delay. So, they will work a second shift and we will then have them do that work when the students aren't here that's inside the building. The other uh project is the rooftop replacement unit. The air duct for all

those classrooms that that it supports have all been cleaned and ready. So now it's just going to be the actual installation of the unit and that will take place starting with that half day prior to teachers convention and that concludes my report. Thank you. Um just piggybacking on to what Mr. P said under um administrative let me see it's under here um we're changing the calendar um changing the half day from Tuesday of teachers to Wednesday just because of the HVAC so that's the calendar change um review of minutes July 22nd any comments or questions please email Mr. Aelli, we have approval of June 24th and July 8th. Do I have a motion? >> I'll make a motion. >> Second by Mrs. Norian. Any questions? >> Call the question. >> On the roll, Mr. Delgreco?

>> Yes. >> Mrs. Downey? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Gentry? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Moran? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Norian? >> Yes. >> Mr. Nutland? >> Yes. >> Mr. Dariion? >> Yes. Mrs. Nichols. >> Yes. Committee reports administrative. Mr. Dariion. >> Yes. Tonight we have the uh items A1 through A6. Once again, code of conduct, district mentoring plan, professional development plan, emergency plan, and our evaluation system in addition to the calendar. So, I like to make a motion. >> I'll second it. >> Second by Mrs. Norian. Any questions? Call the question >> on the roll. Mr. Delg Greco. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Downey. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Geni. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Moran. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Norian. >> Yes. >> Mr. Nutland. >> Yes. >> Mr. Dariion. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Nichols. >> Yes. Buildings

and Grounds. Mr. Delg Greco. >> Um, yes. Uh we had a buildings and grounds committee meeting uh prior to this meeting at 6 o'clock. Uh we talked about a lot of the items that Mr. Ill just reviewed during his report. Um you know we talked again about the duct work cleaning right and the preparation for the HVAC unit that that comes in which is why we're moving that half day. Um and just contingency plans. Thank you for letting us know that the unit is going to be held with the contractor versus being delivered on site here to protect the unit. Um we also talked about uh building usage and fees, you know, with um summer wreck and just, you know, some of the uh damage and everything else that was done over the summer and

follow-up steps with the superintendent um you know for that. Also just the YW.CA CA building fees, right? Just the standard fee. And then also just the gym floor being refinished. Um, which is great. You know, Airdell project is waiting to get closed out. You know, basketball court, as you mentioned, just please make sure that when they put the new concrete in, they go pretty deep as they are now. So, when the kids are hanging off that thing, you know, it's sufficient. And then um you and then uh you mentioned to us the fence is going to be repaired prior to a school starting with the tree in that area being removed as well. Um I'm also we're also all happy that you know the playground's going to be finished. The mulch is in place. So

um part of what we're going to approve for usage is the uh PTA is having a meet up with the kindergarteners. So it'll be great to have a fresh playground for the new kindergarters to come in. Um so thank you. Thank you to the custodians in advance for uh the hard work over the summer and the sprint to the end here. Um also with that, I'd like to bring up B1 use of facilities. >> Do I have a second? >> I'll second it. >> Second by Mrs. Zenorian. Any questions? >> I have a question. >> Mr. All right, P. Did the company that's doing the um the resurfacing of the um the playground, do they give a a timeline when it could be played back on? Uh is there a cure time versus a dry

time? >> Are we talking the installation of the basketball court? >> No, no, we're talking about the um the refinishing of the playground. Um >> Oh, no. That's That'll be good to go. >> That'll be good to go. >> Yeah, that'll be good to go. Over time, it will cure for kids to play on it. It's fine. >> All right. The cure time. the cure. He just said make sure there are no >> sharp >> metal objects hitting it. >> Okay. >> He goes because that will chip it. So the important thing on uh when they spray the mulch, they us they spray it to have somebody there on site. I'm going to make sure someone is there or I'll be there to make sure when they put it down, they don't bang into anything

and cause chips or Well, everything's brand new and untouched. So if something happens, we know where it happened. But that's what he's saying now. You could play immediately, regular wear and tear from children. Okay. Over time, it'll cure better. But just keep any sort of abrasive object away from it. >> Okay. Thank you. >> I have a question on the playground. The meetup is this Monday, August 24th. So it's we're okay like to have the kindergarten and PTA there. Is it the 27th? >> The 27th. >> Oh, okay. >> It says the 24th. So, is it the >> 24th is on his calendar, but then I saw an email I think maybe with a different date. >> On the agenda, it says the 24th. Is that kindergarten family meet at Playground Behind School, right? So,

what is the date? >> So, it's the 27th. >> 27th. >> So, that's Thursday. It'll be okay. >> Yes, >> that's okay for that. Okay. So, we're going to change this date to the 27th. Any other questions? >> Call the question. >> On the role, Mr. Delg Greco? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Downey? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Gi? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Moran? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Norian? >> Yes. >> Mr. Nutland? >> Yes. >> Mr. Dariion? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Nichols. >> Yes. Curriculum, Mrs. Norian. >> Yeah, we were not able to set up our curriculum meeting, but um the plan is that we um will have it set up. I believe it's the 2nd of September. Um so, uh at that point in time, we'll get the information to get then full approval of

the curriculum at the first meeting in September. >> Finance. Mr. Dariion, >> I'm sorry. I just was writing. Um, yes. Tonight we have uh items D1 through D6. I'd like to introduce pretty straightforward in terms of uh check journals, lease agreements. >> I'll second it. >> Second by Mr. Norian. Any questions? >> Call the question. on the roll. Mr. Delgrea, >> yes. >> Mrs. Downey, >> yes. >> Mrs. Geni, >> yes. >> Mrs. Moran, >> yes. >> Mrs. Norian, >> yes. >> Mr. Nutland, >> yes. >> Mr. Dariion, >> yes. >> Mrs. Nichols, >> yes. Delegate report. Mrs. Norian, >> there is no uh report at this time. The uh meeting should be November. Uh I believe they had taken a survey asking if uh districts would like to change it to once a year

instead of twice a year and make it all day, but I believe that they're still si sitting with the twice a year. Thank you. Um personnel, before we go into it, I'm going to make a change to the agenda item 1A effective date. I'm changing from 8:24 26 to 83126 or sooner. So that's what we will be presenting. Mr. Darian, you want to present personnel? >> Uh, yes. I'd like to introduce personnel items F1 >> as amended >> and I'll second it. >> Any questions? Call the question >> on the roll. Mr. Delg Greco. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Downey. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Gi. Yes, >> Mrs. Moran. >> Yes, >> Mrs. Norian. >> Yes, >> Mr. Nutland. >> Yes, >> Mr. Dariion. >> Yes, >> Mrs. Nichols. >> Yes, policy. Mr. Nutland. >> Yes,

we uh had a meeting um at 5:00 today. Uh we went over through uh a group of different topics um related to policy bylaws. Um we talked about the bell-to-bell protocols um for um internetable devices for our students. Um, I'll be actually uh introducing a walk-on uh G1 um after my report. Um we talked about the policy 6171 um which is going to require um new language about IEPs and the notification towards parent uh to parents um that has to be electronically and a paper copy. Uh we discussed bylaw 9113 uh which is not ma mandated by law but it talks about um the process for a close session nomination on public review. We talked about bylaw 9321 um which is how um revisit district will display legal notices and how uh uh newspapers are

no longer uh the preferred means of communication. Uh we talked about bylaw 9323 which added um legal references um into the existing bylaw. So it was just uh you know just another court case added to that one. Um policy 3510 and 3516 both address school districts skipping or asking for a waiver on um lead testing for the drinking water. um for drinking water for any food prep um which we would not be qualified for because our kids drink. So that's um you know was added um through um uh through other steps beyond us. Uh policy 5141 um is mandated a epilepsy uh training for teachers uh every five years. Um we discussed policy 6173 which um talks about home instruction um when to receive home instruction and uh the difference between the cumulative cumulative days

and the non-cumulative days. We also talked about uh artificial intelligence today, reviewing our policy on AI uh and academic integrity and how teachers can use AI um with uh the the role of AI with lesson plans. Um but with that, I'm going to um walk on G1, which is the bell-to bell um device requirements. >> What's the policy number? >> 5131. So this is just a first reading. >> First reading. >> So it's in your packet >> and we'll be voting next time. So if you want any changes, please email Mr. Nutland, myself, and the superintendent. Public relations, Miss Moran. [laughter] >> We have not gotten that meeting that we've been trying to put together. I'm hopeful that it will happen before school. I have to speak with Miss Bosios when she's back. >> Okay.

Special education, Miss Downey. >> I apologize to the public. I forgot to open to the public for agenda items when we came back. So, now's your time. Want to welcome our new assistant principal. >> Thank you. I'm very >> Would you like to say anything? You don't have to, but we would love to hear from you. >> Well, I just say a quick thank you. Um So, I'm Laura. >> Hit that green button. >> Let's see. Did I get it? >> Okay. I'm Laura Kandra. I'm coming from Ridgewood and I'm so excited to join the OPS family. I feel very honored and privileged. So, I'm really looking forward to getting to know all of you and, you know, the kids. So, I'm looking forward to a great year together. >> What school did you teach

in? You enjoyed it? >> I taught at Somerville Elementary School. >> How many students are in there? H there's probably roughly between 400 like 450 a little bit about that. Um and I've had great experience in both the younger and upper grades. So I actually student taught there in kindergarten then went to first grade fourth grade but as the technology innovation specialist I'm really in all build like all grades. So it's funny because I could walk into a fifth grade room or a kindergarten room and they're like you're here. So I really enjoyed getting to see all the students in school. >> Get ready for the crazy. It's a big building with a lot of kids. >> But it's so cool. I said it's like a campus here. When I first came, I thought, "Oh

my gosh, what a door." You know, it's a walk through. Even sitting here, it's so beautiful. So, I'm really excited. >> The biggest elementary school in the state of New Jersey. >> I heard that. That's such a >> Yeah. Yeah. It looks amazing. So, I'm excited to be part of the family. >> Yeah. We welcome you. Thank you for coming tonight. We appreciate it. >> Of course. I'm excited. >> Anything else open to the public? >> Any old or new business? Yes. Uh what does that mean? >> I'm I'm going to keep it light, superficial, but uh I just wanted to talk about the technology survey. You know, I know we sent that out. I know it's kind of just asking a question about technology and what they thought about technology. And you know, I

I I spent uh a couple of minutes researching, you know, like where did this come from? um you know this recent uh debate uh in terms of uh whether or not um you know getting in front of screens is uh beneficial or detrimental to our kids. And um if anyone in the audience is listening and if anybody wants to do some quick research, there's really two articles that were published that site a bunch of studies and uh the first one was a UNESCO uh global education monitoring report in 2023. Um and I I think this really came out of the COVID era and they wanted to see how CO was impacting the kids. But there's a big section on technology and education and they had a lot of interesting stuff that they cited. Um and

then uh there was a article in the journal of American Medical Association published uh August of last year and uh you know it was really interesting. They um you know they they say stuff that we knew all along. I remember as a kid everyone would say you know stop watching TV. It's not good for you. You know get out don't sit in front of the TV. get out of the house, you know, and and that still applies. And uh whether you're in front of the television or you're in front of your iPad or you're in front of your computer, you know, if you're just sitting there, you know, passively watching Disney or cartoons, um it's not good for your brain. So, uh from that perspective, you know, yeah, technology is terrible. But they also said

that there's no correlation uh between gamers and cognitive uh ability or or loss of cognitive ability. Uh if you're active in in I don't know what all the the video games are. I'm not going to cite it what they the ones that I remember but um because that'll kind of give you an indication what my kids watched. But um but video games were not necessarily detrimental. And it's the same thing they said when it came to uh parent or teacher instructed, you know, technology, whether it's, you know, Chromebooks or an iPad. If if a teacher is involved in a lesson, it's not necessarily bad for the student simply because it's through the technology. Now, they do say, of course, it needs to be grade appropriate. And they also say it could be a complete waste

of time and you can do it without the technology. Why do it? um you know it's probably better not to but it's not wasn't really negative about technology and I just thought I would say that uh here if anybody wants to you know dig into this further there's some really comes up very quickly if you do some researching and um you know it just made sense to me so that's all I wanted to say thanks I >> I would love to see a report uh or an you know on the role or the impact that it's had on interpersonal relationship ationships. I think that's uh I think yeah I think everything you know in moderation or also you know in you know in its proper realm but I think the interpersonal relationships and you know

conversing the skill of conversing I think is being lost. Um but you know that would be an interesting study. >> Yeah I left that out. Um social media is terrible. It's worse than television. >> Yeah. Yeah. Any other old or new business? Mr. Delgreco. >> Yeah. So, I know the superintendent's not here tonight and I'm sure she's watching and not enjoying herself, but hopefully uh she's enjoying herself and not watching, but uh the governor, I think, put out a a statement or um something on social media today stating that she was at another school district and they were looking at tutoring uh specifically in um ELA for reading and because of COVID and just, you know, certain grade levels just still aren't meeting the standards in terms of reading and whatnot. And she's mentioned something

about funding or um some sort of like before after school tutoring programs. Um so just wondering if you know there's going to be either additional grants or funds or if we already have these funds and we're already doing it. I know we did a program like before and after school. Is that similar? Um it's just kind of interesting that the governor cited >> you know um these types of programs >> that might fall under asser >> or a new one. >> Yeah. >> You mean locking down the the this the schools is not good for education. >> Any other old or new business? Any reason to go into a close session? >> Move to have a second. Second by Mr. Mr. Darien. All in favor? I I. >> All right.
